Keys to Spring Profits MARCH MARKS the beginning of spring and, for many vendors, the flea market “New Year.” Seasonal markets reopen, vendors set out new merchandise and events are happening left and right. Whether you have been away from the market since last fall or have been running your booth indoors during winter, now is the perfect time to reevaluate your business and do a little spring cleaning. From products ideas to tech tips, here are your keys to drive profits now.

Brighten up your booth. A few easy additions that can freshen the look of your space include artwork, fresh flowers, new signage and colorful wall or tent hangings. Make your area appear as vibrant as possible to entice customers to come in for a closer look. Move products around. If you always adhere to a specific arrangement for your merchandise, shuffle your display instead of putting products out in the usual fashion. Online, visit Pinterest and search for visual merchandising ideas. There is a wealth of inspiration at your fingertips. Create vignettes within your booth. Display similar items in new ways that tell a story and create an environment that invites customers. If you have housewares, for example, create a table setting or arrange merchandise to resemble an organized closet or pantry cabinet. Place a few items on sale and

display them at the back of your booth. This location is key, because it ensures that shoppers see your new merchandise first as they make their way back to your sale section. Browsers may pick up a few new products on the way. Be sure to hang banners or signs detailing any promotions you offer.

Products Sell sports equipment. Products related to baseball, golf, lacrosse, rowing, softball and tennis are all fair game for your booth. Equipment for other sports, such as basketball and football, can also yield a profit. Remember, customers are thinking about being outdoors at this time of year so offer products that will remind them of the transition to outdoors. Tap the gardening market. Tools, gloves, seeds, plants and pots appeal to a wide variety of demographics. They are often conducive to demonstrations, so, if possible, set up a small area with gardening goods where patrons can dig in. Consider decorating your booth with plants and flowers as well. Capitalize on spring cleaning. Consider adding organizational items, such as storage bins, baskets or other products that help tidy a space. Update your signage to remind people that once spring arrives, it’s time to put things in order and, most importantly, lead by example. Sell swimming pool accessories.

Bring out warm weather apparel. Offer sales on autumn and winter items for those who make it a habit to stock up on essentials during the off season. Put up a sign that advertises your sale prices. Protect Toothbrushes from Germs FLUSHING A toilet sends bacteria eight feet into the air before it begins to settle on nearby surfaces, according to research by Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When Cindy Martin, co-owner of Cynita, Inc., learned of this, her mind raced to the toothbrushes that lay exposed on her bathroom countertop. Con su mer s are demonstrating an increasing interest in health and disease prevention, and Martin fell in line with the trend. Experienced with custom products, she worked with a designer to develop a lightweight, economical solution to the germy issue, and the Cover Me toothbrush protector is the result. Cover Me is a tall dome that fits over most standard size toothbrush holders, and protects brushes from sink splashes, hairspray, room deodor i zer and restroom germs. Each cover features a curved bottom to allow for enough airflow to prevent mold from forming 42

when toothbrushes are damp and to help quicken drying time. The product, packaged in a clear box for easy shelf display, is made from clear plastic, so as not to hide customers’ existing toothbrush holder, but Martin and her business partner, A nita Greger, already have plans to introduce translucent colored versions. The Cynita team hopes to offer customization options, such as printing corporate logos on the product so that it may be marketed to dental and orthodontist offices. “In my home, we

use the Cover Me toothbrush protector to shield our own toothbrushes,” Martin says. “If you wait for a two week time span, it’s shocking to see how much residue has accumulated on top of the cover. That layer of filth would have ended up on my family’s toothbrushes, were it not for this product.” “Promotional products and ones that can be customized sell well at small and medium sized establishments, which can include any type of vendor or retailer,” Martin points out. “The bottom line is that consumers want products that are affordable, uncomplicated and helpful in providing easy solutions to everyday problems.” With this in mind, Cynita, Inc. has established a 50 piece minimum order. A Message from the CEO Dear valued reader, This year marks our 25th anniversary serving the wholesale and retail merchandise industry, and I want to thank you for choosing us to help you grow your business. It’s been an exciting journey that began in 1987 when my father, Gene Sumner, and I bought the East Coast Merchandiser magazine, a regional monthly journal serving the flea market industry. We soon launched Western and Midwest Merchandiser magazines in order to cover the flea market and swap meet industry from coast to coast. Within two years, we introduced Independent Retailer (formerly Cover) magazine and in 1990 my brother, Woody Sumner, came on board as publisher of that periodical. We then launched Wholesale Central and Closeout Central, which are now the leading online resources for wholesale merchandise, and, in 1996, Ron Fisher joined our team as publisher of Web Wholesaler 50

magazine, the publication for online wholesale buyers. Along with the Merchandiser Group magazines, which reach over 100,000 vendors of new merchandise each year, we created and manage FleaMarketZone.com, where vendors find daily news and product information. To further support small business operators, we started the PROVENDOR Association, the only body dedicated to empowering flea marketers. Anderson Jockey Lot & Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market DOYLE â&#x20AC;&#x153;DCâ&#x20AC;? Bryson and William Richard McClellion, Jr., launched Anderson Jockey Lot & Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market in 1974 after they visited a flea market in Mexico and decided that Belton, SC, was the ideal site for a new venue with plenty of parking. The market grew over the years, and is now one of the Southâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest markets, says William Richard McClellion, III, who took over the market after his father passed away in June, 2012. Bryson died in April of 2012. Every weekend, more than 1,500 professional, hobby and yard sale dealers offer shoppers everything imaginable. This includes fresh produce, technology and automotive components, books, video, music, tools and hardware, arts and crafts, pets and small farm animals, yard sale items and much more. The market has a pet pavilion and a dog row. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also sell peanuts and popcorn, and have restaurants,â&#x20AC;? adds McClellion. Anderson Jockey Lot & Farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Market has about 2,000 spaces, of which 500 are outdoor and 1,500 are indoor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most inside vendors sell new merchandise,â&#x20AC;? McClellion continues. â&#x20AC;&#x153;New merchandise runs with the fads, and a big one now is remote control helicopters. A lot of people are selling those. When I was a kid, lighted yo-yos were a big thing.â&#x20AC;? Outside, about 80 percent of vendors are selling used merchandise. Vendor spaces are 10 feet by 10 feet, and rental fees are $10 per day, for both indoor and outdoor spaces, for permanent vendors. Flea Market Bill Would Ban Sale of Animals in CA

Anderson Jockey Lot & Farmers’ Market, in Belton, SC, has about 2,000 spaces, of which 500 are outdoor and 1,500 are indoor. “My father and DC Bryson started the market to help people start small businesses,” notes William Richard McClellion, III, market owner. McClellion says he is revving up advertising efforts as well as hosting more events in 2013. “We are working on having car shows, RV shows and boat shows. We just had a chili cook off. To get young people to the market, you have to host events,” he states. ■

Roger Dickinson, a member of the California Assembly, recently introduced legislation that would ban the sale of animals at swap meets and flea markets in his state. AB 339 seeks to “prevent the suffering of animals, protect consumers, and eliminate the public health and safety risks, and potential threats of disease outbreaks associated with such sales.” California law currently bans the sale of live animals on any street, highway, public right-of-way, parking lot, carnival or boardwalk. AB 339 has not yet been referred to committee. ■

McHenry, IL, city officials have drafted an amendment to regulate flea markets, and are getting ready to vote on an annual $1,400 license fee for operators. “A fee this large would drive small businesses out of business,” says Carl Eckel, owner of McHenry Flea Market. The city, however, is in talks with both Eckel and the National Flea Market Association (NFMA) to reach an agreement that serves flea market professionals as well as the city of McHenry. “I’m asking them to be more considerate on the fees,” Eckel adds. ■

Regular vendors sell an array of new and used merchandise, fresh produce and Florida souvenirs, and Cupolo cites automotive items as some of the market’s best sellers. “Handmade Hispanic items are great sellers, too, such as custom made domino tables,” she adds. “Pet supplies do well here, too. They never go out of fashion.” ■

Eckel’s McHenry Flea Market, in McHenry, IL, will host a St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event on Sunday, March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, to raise money to cure childhood cancer. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Carl Eckel, owner of the market, shaved his head at last year’s event, which raised over $1,400. Both shavees and donors are welcome. That’s what we do for people.” To draw traffic and support vendors’ sales, the market advertises on billboards on I-85, sponsors radio commercials and has a Facebook page with nearly 3,300 “likes.” McClellion says he is revving up advertising efforts as well as hosting more events in 2013. “We
