The forecast is higher than the 10-year average holiday sales growth of 3.3 percent. This optimistic outlook could mean strong fourth quarter returns for flea market vendors, especially if they provide top holiday merchandise as well as superior customer service. Here are four strategies to help you increase holiday sales in 2013.

Stock up on trending gift products Pay attention to gift giving trends as well as to traditional favorites. Current trends influence buying behavior and can be a potent tool for flea market vendors. Personalized products such as stampable rings and pendants, as well as framed letter and sports prints, are the rage and stand to be top holiday sellers. Loom band kits and pre-made bracelets, tech accessories such as animal themed smartphone covers, and bright and neon colored apparel, all promise to be popular items in the upcoming season. These are going to be very popular holiday gifts.” A Lost Art also offers an assortment of authentic musical instruments from Asia, such as the handmade and hand painted turtle animal clapper/accordion. The instrument makes a clapping noise as the pivoting wooden slats clack together as it is waved back and forth. “They add to our collection of jungle animal carvings and make perfect gifts and toys,” Meller notes.

Other musical instruments, such as maracas, rain sticks, didgeridoos and bird flutes, are available. The Lost Art carries additional natural products like jungle vines pencils and teak candleholders. “Everyone wants products that are good for the environment and fairly traded, like ours, and they give vendors great profit margins,” Meller states. General wholesale ranges from $.50 to $6 for 80 percent of products, and retail typically is from $5 to $50. The minimum order is around $250 but Meller will work with customers if they cannot meet the minimum requirement.

NFMA Names Jim Gerlach Legislator of the Year The National Flea Market Association (NFMA) held its fourth annual “Day on the Hill” in Washington, DC, October 2-3. During the event, NFMA members had meetings with 15 legislators or their representatives about legislation that involves the flea market industry. The Association also presented its Legislator of the Year award to Congressman James Gerlach (R-PA). “We chose Jim based on his record and history of work on small business issues,” says John Chism, GM of Quakertown Farmers Market and Flea Market in Bucks County, PA. Chism is also a NFMA past president, board member and co-chairman of the association’s legislative committee. “The Congressman has a strong background in promoting and protecting small business along the lines of assisting small businesses with taxes, training programs and funding. He is very active in those areas.” The 2014 NFMA Annual Conference will be held February 12-13, 2014, at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Wolff’s Flea Hosts Grand Reopening Celebration WOLFF’S FLEA Markets has been operating two markets just outside the city of Chicago since 1991 in Rosemont and Palatine, IL. Rosemont is the larger of the two venues and accommodates 725 vendors. It runs from April through the end of October, and is open Sundays, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. While the Rosemont season ends in the fall, the Palatine location remains open year round on Saturdays and Sundays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. With space for around 300 vendors, it is the site of several family fun events. “Although the market stays open year round, we have a grand ‘reopening’ celebration,” explains Sharon Wolff, creative media and

merchandise consultant, “because many of our customers and outdoor vendors return to the Palatine location after Rosemont closes.” The festivities, to be held November 3rd, will include raffles, face painting by Ashe and electronics recycling. “In November, we do a food drive for the Palatine Food Pantry,” Wolff adds. “We also have a raffle for grocery store gift cards.” In December, Wolff’s flea also hosts a hat and glove drive for the needy children of Palatine, and the market will be collecting new socks for adults and children throughout the entire month. On December 7th, the market will host a Recycled Button Holiday Craft. “We recruit my

son’s high school friends to help the children. They can make ornaments, jewelry and little Christmas trees. It is simple, old fashioned stuff, and the kids love it.” ■
