First Monday Trade Days, in Canton, TX, is one of America’s oldest and largest flea markets. It began in the 1850s, when the Circuit Judge stopped in Canton on the first Monday of each month to hold court. Today, the market is spread over 450 acres, has more than 7,000 booths and is open four days per month, Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month. Eighty percent of the market is indoors and outdoor spaces have roofs. Rental fee for a 10 foot by 10 foot space is about $50 for the weekend. First Monday Trade Days welcomes around two million shoppers each year, and the community of 3,581 persons grows to 200,000 to 300,000 people when the market is open, says Mercy Rushing, marketing director for the city of Canton for First Monday. One of the reasons First Monday Trade Days is so successful, she adds, is because it is kept clean and safe, with firstaid facilities, and police and fire personnel on the grounds. Market vendors who do particularly well selling new merchandise at the market are those that embellish their products with an artistic touch, Rushing notes. ■

The McHenry City Council, in McHenry, IL, unanimously approved a measure requiring an annual $1,400 city license fee for flea markets. The outcome drew a sharp reaction from Jennifer Eckel, who runs Eckel’s McHenry Flea Market. “Congratulations, you got yourself another empty building,” she reportedly told the Northwest Herald. “We’re going somewhere that appreciates us.” Flea market operators will be allowed to pay the $1,400 license fee in a lump sum or in four quarterly installments of $350. The ordinance, which takes effect in May, also requires operators to provide proof of applicable federal and state licenses before receiving a McHenry license to operate. The city’s Community Development Committee initially focused on imposing daily fees of $4 on vendors, but flea market operators said such fees were excessive. The city would have made approximately an extra $10,000 for the year for Eckel’s McHenry Flea Market, Carl Eckel, owner of the market, told FleaMarketZone.com. Eckel had been in talks with the City Council to reach an agreement on a lesser fee. In other Illinois towns, he added, flea market licenses are generally $30 to $40 per year. ■

The market has paid more than $7.5 million to the local utility company during its 26 years in business, Andy Steele, owner of the market, reportedly told PV-Tech. Requiring an initial investment of $4 million, the system is expected to pay for itself in seven to eight years. Manufacturer Solectria provided inverters for a 1.2MW solar PV installation by SolarOne Financial LLC in Florida. SolarOne has created a unique financing model to help commercial businesses, such as Fleamasters, take advantage of solar power, save electricity costs, and benefit from federal tax credits and bonus depreciation, Steele said. Annually, Fleamasters Market is expected to generate 1,680,000 kWh, which is equivalent to removing 1,125.6 tons of CO2, removing 136 cars, 116,041 gallons of gas, planting 840 trees or powering 14,383 light bulbs annually. The 400,000 square foot market hosts approximately 900 retail shops, offering both new and used merchandise, and is open Friday through Sunday. ■
