FLEA MARKET traffic continues to build year-over-year in an economy rebounding from a recession, and flea market vendors are shopping carefully for venues dedicated to attracting shoppers, and for suppliers that offer the best prices. These are among the findings of the 2013 State of the Flea Market Industry research, conducted by Sumner Communications, publisher of the Merchandiser Group magazines and FleaMarketZone.com. In February of 2013, Sumner Communications administered two online surveys, one to market managers and another to market vendors. Overall, the surveys revealed a sense of optimism among managers and vendors alike. Around 53 percent of managers surveyed say shopper traffic this year is about the same as last year, while 29 percent say it has increased. This rise in market activity builds on last year’s growth, as nearly 50 percent of managers surveyed in 2012 said traffic had increased over 2011. Likewise, 41 percent of vendors surveyed say they expect to see an increase in their annual sales revenue over 2012, whereas last year, 41 percent of vendors said revenue was about the same as 2011. The most effective sales strategies, according to vendors, are:

This year’s survey also found that the majority of vendors (58 percent) have smartphones, enabling them to cater to shoppers who want to pay with credit cards by using payment apps. Choosing a marketplace is also key to success, and nearly 88 percent of vendors surveyed cite good customer traffic as the number one consideration in this regard. Markets are drawing in customers through advertising, and more than 82 percent of managers surveyed say they promote their markets. The top three media used are flyers (71.4 percent), newspaper ads (64.3 percent) and social media posts (50 percent), with social media posts noted as one of the most effective means. More than 70 percent of managers say they have a web presence, such as a website or Facebook page. Special events are also a vital means to attract consumers. Around 59 percent of markets, both this year and last, host special events, with the top three being:

• Holiday celebrations, such as those centered around Halloween and Christmas, (70 percent). • Prize drawings (60 percent). • Fundraisers, entertainment and car shows (40 percent each).

Low cost space rental remains the number two consideration in choosing a market this year (57.6 percent) as it was last year (63.6 percent). A convenient location is sought by 54.5 percent of vendors this year, as it was by 52.3 percent of vendors last year. Market cleanliness also ranks high among vendors’ desires. The flea market industry continues to be a promising venture for many businesspersons. Some 58 percent of vendors have been in the industry for at least six years, and 16 percent have run their businesses for 21 or more years. for a minimum of six years and 15.3 percent had been operating for 21 or more years. Similarly, of managers surveyed, nearly 90 percent have been in the industry for more than six years with more than 41 percent in the industry for 21 years or more. In addition, around 41 percent of managers operate booths at their markets. This bodes well for vendors, as it gives managers hands on experience, and enables them to relate to vendors on multiple levels. Once again, the vast majority of flea market vendors are selling new merchandise, 94 percent in 2013 and 95 percent in 2012. The 2013 survey shows jewelry is the number one product category, sold by nearly 50 percent of vendors, followed by gifts/ novelties (43.5 percent), collectibles (41.2 percent) and apparel/clothing (38.9 percent). Furthermore, vendors say the top selling merchandise categories at their markets are jewelry, apparel/clothing and antiques/used/ vintage merchandise. Managers also name these three categories as the top sellers at their markets. When choosing wholesale suppliers, product value/price is most important to nearly 70 percent of vendors, followed by product quality (59.3 percent) and low or no minimum order (56.1 percent). These results mirror last year’s survey, when nearly 77 percent of vendors cited product value/price and 64.5 percent named product quality as key factors. Asked why they like their favored suppliers, nearly 73 percent of vendors say they offer the best prices, followed by ease of ordering (50 percent). China Sourcing Fair Serves New Markets GLOBAL SOURCES’ China Sourcing Fair, now in its third year, runs June 25-27, at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, FL. The show is the largest China-products exhibition serving the Latin American market, and provides retailers the opportunity to source directly from quality suppliers from China. Last year, the Miami fair drew around 800 manufacturers and suppliers, as well as more than 6,000 attendees, both of which were increases over the previous year. Bill Janeri, general manager at Global Sources, expects the number of exhibitors and buyers to continue to grow as more industry professionals gain knowledge of the benefits of attending the show. “The Miami event provides a convenient, regional location which Latin American buyers can easily visit in between the main April and October sourcing seasons,� Janeri explains. “With visitors also coming from the U.S. and Canada, the event provides an opportunity for North American buyers to find deals on new products, and form relationships with a wide array of potential suppliers as well.� In November 2012, Global Sources surveyed Miami China Sourcing Fair 2012 attendees to better understand buyers’ sourcing behavior and their product preferences. Of the 548 respondents, more than half (52 percent) have been in business for over 10 years. “This indicates that these show visitors are wellestablished buyers and importers of consumer products for the Latin American market,� Janeri notes. Minneapolis Approves Outdoor Flea Markets

Caesar Creek Flea Market, in Wilmington, OH, is hosting The Caesar Creek Flea Market Bluegrass Festival 2013, a twoday event benefitting the March of Dimes, June 8-9. Sponsored by Yuengling, the festival will feature activities, music, food and flea market shopping for all ages. “It’s the perfect time for our customers to reacquaint themselves with the flea market shopping experience while enjoying our newly renovated indoor market, consisting of seven air-conditioned buildings,” says Greg Dove, president of Levin Service Company, parent company of Caesar Creek Flea Market. During the Bluegrass Festival, the flea market will be open extended hours on Saturday and Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., while the indoor market will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The outdoor music tent will feature Bluegrass music from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The March of Dimes will be operating the Yuengling Beer Garden next to the outdoor stage from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, with all proceeds going to the March of Dimes Bikers for Babies. ■

The San Ysidro Swap Meet, at 2388 Via Segundo in San Ysidro, CA, is for sale. The property was developed in the mid 1980s, and has been operating as an indoor swap meet for more than 22 years. It comes complete with more than 100 vendors in place. The swap meet currently functions five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday, with long established vendors selling consumer goods. It is located in the southwest corner of San Diego County, less than two miles from the U.S.-Mexico border crossing, an area known for a wide variety of retail activities. The swap meet is in a small industrial park near the center of a cluster of retail/commercial buildings, and is listed at a sales price of $5,199,000. Built in 1986, it comprises 74,688 square feet on 4.04 acres. The adjacent land and building also are for sale, and provide an opportunity to expand the venue. ■

Outdoor flea markets could begin popping up in Minneapolis, MN, this summer under a new ordinance approved by the city council’s Committee on Regulatory, Energy and Environment (REE). Council Member Gary Schiff, presently running for mayor of the city, proposed the ordinance change, saying flea markets can help to enliven and add character to neighborhoods, reports the Star Tribune. The markets would be devoted mainly to antiques and crafts. Outdoor flea markets, Schiff stated, encourage the reuse of items, provide space for people who are collectors of vintage, antique and other reused items, and help create a sustainable local economy, according to Minnesota Public Radio. The city has outlawed flea markets for around 60 years, requiring that used and vintage items be sold indoors. The ordinance, approved in April in committee, would require flea markets to be licensed. It would also ban the sale of electronics, guns and drug paraphernalia. Additional rules will be added when the council takes up related changes to the zoning code. ■

Sporting Goods That Sell MAURICE SPORTING Goods, now celebrating 90 years in business, was established in 1923 by Maurice Olshansky as a sporting goods outlet in downtown Chicago. By 1958, the company had started to supply local discount stores with sporting goods and, today, it is the world’s largest distributor and manufacturer of wholesale fishing, camping, hunting, marine and athletic goods and accessories. The company’s main division, called Big Game International, imports brands of hunting, marine and athletic products. “Our primary business has been with mass merchant discount and big box sporting goods stores,” shares Norm Pflomm, national account manager of Maurice Sporting Goods. Presently, the company is expanding into smaller retail outlets including flea markets. Maurice Sporting Goods’ fishing and hunting products are very SKU intensive, and the company features more than 50,000 products in its online catalog. To further complicate matters, products are regional and seasonal, Pflomm states, so what sells may differ from market to market. To simplify things for vendors, the company creates individual programs to generate sales in their specific venues. “We work with some of the larger stores that span the country, including Walmart, Kmart, Sport’s Authority and Dick’s Sporting Goods, and they have us manage their businesses based on what is selling,” Pflomm points out. “We get a lot of our history off of POS sales and we apply that information to both large and small retailers.” Right now, fishing season is starting, Pflomm notes, and the company’s fishing combos, which are complete rod and reel sets, are terrific sellers with
