Back to School Product Roundup FLEA MARKET vendors can expect parents to shop and spend more during the upcoming back-to-school season than they did last year, according to ShopperTrak. National retail sales are expected to rise 4.3 percent in August 2013 over the same period last year. Vendors eager to jump on these expanding back to school budgets should consider carrying some of the essentials as well as trending merchandise. Predictably, consumers will need writing utensils, paper, notebooks, backpacks, lunch boxes and apparel, and vendors who stock these staples stand to profit. In addition, as technology infiltrates schools of every grade level, the desire for fashionable cell phone cases, flash drives, calculators and LED notebooks will continue to increase. Hot trends include clothes and supplies in neon colors and branded items tied to the “Monsters University” movie and boy band One Direction. Vendors can draw customers into their booths by carrying and spotlighting items they are selling for under $1. Also put trending items up front where it will catch your shoppers’ eyes. Items are sold by the piece, pallet, lot or load. “No order is too small,” Winkoff stresses. Clothing starts at $1 apiece, shoes start at $3 a pair and denim starts at $2 apiece. Pallets of clothing are sold at the piece price. “Each pallet’s contents are counted by hand, and the quantity is noted on the pallet. If someone needs around 2,500 pieces of clothing, we will look at pallets and add the numbers to get them close to that.”

Tupelo Flea Market Celebrates 25 Years The Tupelo Flea Market is celebrating 25 years in business. The event is the South’s largest indoor/outdoor flea market, with 500,000 square feet of air conditioned/heated space. The year round venue is open the second weekend of every month, and two weekends in November. More than 30,000 people attend the market on a given weekend, coming from a 100-mile area including Tupelo and surrounding cities. Parking is free, and admission is $1 for anyone over the age of six. Over 500 vendors set up shop and sell a wide variety of items, including clothing, pets and furniture. Indoor vendor spaces are 10-feet by 10-feet and 9-feet by 11-feet, and outside spaces are 9-feet by 18-feet. Rental fees range from $75 to $85 per space. RV hookup is available. The market will be open August 9 through 11. Hours are Fridays, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ■

Pennsylvania Market to Open September 14 The Flea & Farmers Market, in Centre Hall, PA, begins on Saturday, September 14, and will be open every Saturday through November 2013. The market, held on the grounds of the Grange Fair & Campground, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The flea market will host a diverse array of shops selling new and used merchandise, such as tools, furniture, toys, clothes and antiques. The farmers market will feature fresh produce, products and baked goods locally made. Providing shopper traffic, the Grange Fair attracts more than 250,000 visitors annually, and events other than the fair attract more than 25,000 visitors. Typical indoor vendor spaces are 10-feet by 10-feet, and rent for $35 per day. An outdoor space is 10-feet by 30-feet, and costs $25 a day. Weekly, monthly and season space rental is discounted. The market offers 9,000 square feet of indoor shopping and numerous open-air sites. Shopper admission and parking are free. A complete grand opening celebration is scheduled for April 15, 2014. ■

Fox Plaza Mercado Dedicated to Fun, Food and Safety Fox Plaza Mercado is located one mile south of I-10 at the corner of Alameda Ave. and Paisano Dr. in El Paso, TX. If it is, try to get recommendations. Search on your type of business to see who is there. Be in the mind of the searcher to determine what keywords shoppers use. Start by analyzing your suppliers Determine who is your biggest supplier and why. Is it because of product, pricing or service? Chances are it is all three. While the most important single criterion is the product and its appeal to your customers, pricing has to be fair in relation to the product and its competition. If the product has brand name recognition that can enhance your customer’s view of your booth for quality or fashion forwardness, this provides added value. The consistency and quality of the product is also of great importance. The service you receive is also crucial and there are many factors to consider. These include product availability, complete and on-time deliveries, and product marketing. Other elements to consider are whether or not a supplier offers demonstrations, sales meetings or closeouts, or pre-tickets or counts your merchandise. If a supplier offers special terms or allowances, this is a plus.
