Profit from Closeouts, Liquidations and Auctions CLOSEOUT MERCHANDISE, first quality goods that have reached the end of their shelf life, can offer flea market and swap meet vendors an opportunity to sell products at low prices and make big profits in the process. Reasons for liquidation vary, and may be that an owner is going out of business, changing product lines or needs to reduce surplus stock to make room for new merchandise. Liquidations can be particularly attractive because the products are generally sold at well under regular wholesale prices. Saja Stark, executive sales manager of Discount Wholesalers Inc., launched in 1999, suggests flea market vendors preview goods before purchase. “We have a large showroom in Pennsylvania, and we let buyers look at the products before they buy them so there are no surprises. Vendors are able to look through a manifested list of pallets and pick one based on what is inside.” Discount Wholesalers primarily sells shelf pulls and original case products that are made in the USA. Products come from grocery and drug stores, and include cosmetics, health and beauty

products, household cleaners, general merchandise and small electronics. “We sell everything at a fraction of its original wholesale value. Being all clean and original cased goods, flea market vendors can charge less than normal retail prices and still double and even triple their investment,” Stark notes. “Most flea marketers buy a pallet or two, and we have pallets that start as low as $200.” Stark suggests vendors do a little homework before buying a pallet of closeout merchandise. “They can look at the manifest, and then go and see what the products sell for so they know what they are getting into. A little research pays off in the end.”
Mixed pallets offer additional value On the other hand, says Gary Bingham, owner of the Bargain Warehouse, vendors can benefit from not knowing exactly what is contained in a pallet. The company, launched in 1998, contracts with major department stores and sells name brand overstocks, closeouts and returns. Its products include electronics, clothing, and health and beauty products. “When you buy a pallet from us, you get a mixture of new and returned merchandise,” Bingham explains. “We do not cherry pick out the good stuff and we stake our reputation on that. Our buyers get our products just the way they came in. Because I do not know exactly what is in the pallet, vendors pay pennies on the dollar.” Retail tags are often on the packages, he shares, and vendors will sell the items for about half of the ticket price, turning a large profit. Bingham suggests flea marketers find a unique niche. “I tell my customers to find something they like to sell and continued on page 12

In addition, the company produces note pads that feature dogs, cats and wild animals. Presently, it is also selling handmade necklaces of a woven material that contain no clasps, which are especially good for women who are allergic to metal. Paul Fintak, who is still active in the company, launched the firm in 1992. His son, Gregory Fintak, is now at the helm.

barges. It eventually washes ashore in small, smooth pieces. The sea glass is collected and sent to Mexico, where it is wire wrapped and made into jewelry. Sea glass jewelry is available in natural blues, greens and purples. “People are looking for the sea glass style jewelry, and it is selling well at flea markets,” Smith points out. Wholesale generally ranges from $5 to $7, with some necklaces wholesaling for up to $10. Markup is double to two and a half times wholesale. Candy wrapper purses from Mexico are another hot trend. Prior to launching its line of stationery, the senior Fintak and his wife, Carol, operated a booth selling jewelry at the Wagon Wheel Flea Market in Pinellas Park, FL. They also had a typesetting and graphic design business, so they decided to manufacture and sell stationery. The note cards sold so well at their booth that the couple decided to offer its products to other merchants. Cranberry Creek is now selling its products to around 1,000 vendors across the U.S.
Ordering policies Cranberry Creek has a floor display that holds up to four designs in 80 names, or 320 packages. The fully stocked display costs $432, plus $95 for the rack. The company gives vendors extra merchandise to offset the cost of the display. Vendors can buy a full, three quarter or half rack of products. The minimum initial order is a half display, which is 160 packages. The minimum order for generic merchandise is $100. ■

Quakertown Market Celebrates 80 Years

QUAKERTOWN FARMERS Market and Flea Market is a Bucks County, PA, landmark and shopping tradition. The market is celebrating more than 80 years of being a family owned and operated business. It is open Fridays and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., year round. The venue hosts a 170,000-square-foot airconditioned building with more than 110 merchants. Product categories include fresh food, prepared food, new merchandise and services. It also has a 30,000-square-foot indoor flea market with more than 90 vendors, as well as a huge outdoor market featuring more than 450 vendors, selling new and used merchandise, collectibles and antiques. In addition, there is a discount grocery warehouse outlet, a pet department, a plant nursery and walk-in BINGO. Quakertown Farmers Market and Flea Market draws tens of thousands of shoppers every week. “We pride ourselves on being an incubator for small businesses,” says John Chism, market general manager. “We try to keep start up costs and rents the lowest in the area so people can see what it’s like to be their own boss.” ■
BRIER CREEK Flea Market, in Durham, NC, is putting a new twist on the flea market scene, by allowing vendors to set up shop and store their wares inside a PODS container. Sellers also have the traditional option of renting a table. Located on Glenwood Avenue on the Durham/Raleigh border, the market is open Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., year round. More than 80,000 cars, on average, pass by the market daily. From ten to 25 vendors sell furniture, toys, clothes, tools, collectibles, antiques and more. Monthly rental of an 8 foot by 16 foot PODS, along with a space for selling inside and outside the PODS, is $149. A weekend table rents for $25 and daily table rental is $15. New Market in Heber Springs, AR, Offers Free Vendor Spaces HEBER SPRINGS Flea Market, with space for 240 vendors, opened recently in Heber Springs, AR. The venue, operating from April through December, is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 7 a.m. until dark. The market is fully fenced, and offers plenty of parking and lighting. For the month of July, vendors are invited to run their booths and pay no rental fees until August. Sellers need to bring their own tents, but the market rents tables for $4 each. If a vendor brings in another seller, however, the table rental fee is waived. “There is no market like this in this area, and vendors are not going to have any problem getting customers,” says Keith Tippitt, owner and manager. “We are on the main drag, which has all kinds of restaurants, hotels and car dealerships. It gets so crowded around here, you can’t drive down the street in the summertime.” Heber Springs Flea Market is located at 2337 Hwy 25B North in Heber Springs. ASD Las Vegas Sneak Peek THE ASD Las Vegas trade show, now in its 53rd year, will be held August 4-7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. More than 2,800 exhibitors and 45,000 attendees are expected to attend, says Karla Villalobos, audience marketing manager. ASD Las Vegas show attendees will find a broad array of merchandise in six categories: Gift & Home, Fashion Accessories, Jewelry / Cash & Carry, Health & Beauty, Value & Variety, and Toys & Novelties. August temperatures average over 100 degrees in the entertainment capital of the world, and the show is heating up in more ways than one. Villalobos shares some exciting news about the popular August event. New to ASD Las Vegas is SOURCEDIRECT, a comprehensive sourcing show. More than 250 manufacturers from countries such as China, India, Republic of Korea, Africa and Mexico will be displaying merchandise. “Exhibitors and bigger stores will benefit from SOURCEDIRECT because they can buy large quantities without traveling to China and other countries to get their products,” Villalobos explains. ASD’s gourmet section continues to grow, she continues.

“We launched it in March, and companies like ChocolatRouge and Russell Stover Candies did very well. For August we have even more gourmet companies, including Jelly Belly, which is huge.” The Smoking Accessories side of the South Hall will be open for registration to facilitate an easy flow of foot traffic. The Smoking Accessories area has been remodeled to differentiate it from the Gift & Toy section of the floor, Villalobos adds. It all kicks off opening night with a party at the Hard Rock Café, where the band, Phoenix, will be performing. “They do a lot of 80s cover band music and are very popular,” Villalobos notes. “They performed at our 50th anniversary party and were a huge hit.” ■
