THE MAJORITY of Americans believe that smartphone payments will replace credit cards and cash, according to a recent study by Harris Interactive. With mobile credit card processing on the rise, flea market vendors are gradually joining the mix of sellers using their smartphones to help turn a profit. Phone Swipe, a mobile payment processing solution, was specifically crafted by North American Bancard to help businesses and vendors i n c r e a s e revenue. Since launching in 1992, the company has grown to process more than 12 billion electronic transactions annually for more than 150,000 merchants nationwide. “Phone Swipe allows business owners to offer their customers an expanded range of payment options, and allows consumers to conduct credit transactions anytime and anywhere,” explains Leonard Wong, sales partner at North American Bancard. Mobile payment systems are perfect for the flea market and swap meet industry because many vendors are constantly on the go, he points out. “They often work a variety of hours in different locations. Technology is something that they can use to increase their revenue.” Before another moment of 2013 passes, vendors should consider putting the following tips into practice.

AS FLEA market professionals continue to transition into 2013, now is an excellent time for vendors to evaluate the effectiveness of their business practices. Here are a few strategies to consider to ensure that you cover all of your financial bases and enjoy a profitable New Year. Start by talking to a certified public accountant (CPA). Even if you don’t regularly consult an accountant, speaking with an advisor will help you discern a long-term strategy in addition to helping you organize for the next tax season. This additional perspective can help you prepare for everything from tracking expenses to filing tax forms. Next, take another look at how you classify your business. Are you a sole proprietorship, partnership or incorporated? If you’re considering forming a limited liability company (LLC) to mitigate some financial risk and reshape your approach to taxes, this is another item to discuss with an accountant. In general, your business entity should reflect your booth’s revenue, which may change if you have operated flea markets for several years. Insurance is one factor of increasing importance to vendors as mobile payment technology becomes more and more commonplace. Smartphones play a more integral role in the vending experience, so be sure you have adequate coverage in the event that something should happen to your phone. Equipment such as card readers and your inventory may need to be insured as well. 60

Remember that filing quarterly estimated taxes and selfemployment taxes (SE taxes, Form 1040) are essential tasks for vendors. In order to avoid paying penalties at the end of the year, get in touch with your State Income Tax Department to be sure you have all of the necessary forms. Cross check

Nellie Akalp, CEO of CorpNet, an online legal document filing service, recommends opening a dedicated savings account into which vendors may transfer 25 percent for each payment received. “This strategy makes it far less painful when it’s time to pay self-employment or small business taxes.” Akalp also suggests opening a business credit card, so that each statement serves as an easily audited trail of the year’s expenses. This way, every wholesale purchase is documented by the credit card company and easily obtained when the information is needed in the spring. As small business owners, flea market vendors should continually evaluate their financial strategies. By consulting a CPA, paying taxes in a timely fashion, and keeping accurate and up to date records, vendors will help safeguard their success. ■

Tool Tethers Attract Attention THE RETRACTABLE Tool Tether, a vinyl coated 22-inch steel cable that retracts into a small container, secures small electronics and tools to the wearer’s bag, purse or belt. The apparatus comes in light and heavyduty editions. “It works for any number of small personal accessories like binoculars and wrenches, and lipstick and pepper spray for women,” says Andy Gorman, co-owner of AGC Enterprises NW, LLC. “These tethers will keep you from dropping personal items such as cell phones, cameras, flashlights or keys, to name a few more.” The product is available in 13 colors and

can be customized with a company name or team logo. Three models are available: one with a Velcro strip, one with a red and blue flashing LED “Safety Alert Light,” and another with a white LED peek-a-boo flashlight. To attract attention and encourage sales, Gorman has created unique package designs for each model. Retractable tool tethers are designed to appeal to every consumer, from cyclists to construction workers, he adds. Suggested retail for retractable tool tethers with Velcro is $14.95, and each flashlight model retails for $17.50. First time customers receive a 10
