Furthermore, Bloomberg Industries predicts that ecigarette sales will surpass traditional cigarette sales by 2047, while many industry insiders suspect this will occur much earlier. NFMA Members Visit DC October 2-3 Members of the National Flea Market Association (NFMA) visited Washington, DC, October 2-3 for the fourth annual “Day on the Hill.” The NFMA’s lobbyists, Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications and The Suffolk Group, arranged meetings for members with representatives from Congress and the Senate. During those meetings, members introduced politicians to the NFMA, and informed them what the association is about. “Two of our biggest ideals are that we run our businesses in an open and honest fashion, and that we contribute to our communities,” says John Chism, NFMA past president, board member and co-chairman of the legislative committee. The NFMA’s position on all legislation is that it be fair, and not negatively impact one group over another. As an example, The Mainstreet Fairness Act, which is the taxing of all online purchases, was not written fairly, Chism states. “It could adversely affect flea markets because they might purchase merchandise online, or some of them might sell online as well as at flea markets.” The U.S. has between 1,200 and 1,400 active flea markets. Around 200 flea market owners and managers are members of the NFMA, but the association represents all flea markets. ■

Ohio’s Hartville Marketplace & Flea Market Hartville Marketplace & Flea Market, which opened in 1939 as a livestock auction and is now a traditional flea market, is coming upon its 75-year anniversary. Eleven years ago, the Hartville, OH, venue moved to its present location on Edison Street NW and built an indoor marketplace of 100,000 square feet with more than 110 shops. “Not only do we have the indoor shops but we have a food court for breakfast and lunch, and ice cream and coffee shops,” states Trista Todd, director of marketing. The outdoor area features 20 acres of blacktop and accommodates 1,200 vendors. In addition, the 40acre property on which the market sits is shared with two other family owned businesses. The Hartville Kitchen offers home style cooking, a bakery and a candy shop, as well as Hartville Collectibles, which carries brand name items. The other store, at 307,000 square feet, is Hartville Hardware, the largest independently owned hardware store in the U.S. “The campus is a big draw,” Todd remarks. “We have branded the campus as a destination for the whole day, it is so much fun.” For more information, call 330-877-9860 or visit hartvillemarketplace.com. ■

California Law Restricts Animal Sales in Flea Markets California Governor Jerry Brown has signed into law a restriction on the sale of animals at flea markets and swap meets in the state. The bill allows for the sale of animals at these venues under strict conditions that the local jurisdictions adopt certain care standards. If they do not comply, the sale of animals will be prohibited completely. These standards are the same regulations that are required of retail pet stores. California law bans the sale of live animals on any street, highway, public right-of-way, parking lot, carnival or boardwalk. AB 339 was authored by Assembly member Roger Dickinson, and was sponsored by Born Free USA and the State Humane Association of California. “A ban on the sale of animals at flea markets and swap meets dispenses with the timeconsuming process of evaluating the welfare of each individual animal for sale,” explained Erica Hughes, executive director at the State Humane Association of California. “This will provide a welcome tool to humane officers and animal control officers working to protect animals and the public.” ■
