Canton Flea Market Now Classy Collectibles The former Canton Flea Market, in Canton, NY, reopened recently as Classy Collectibles, bringing some resolution to vendors who lost their market when former manager Frank E. Monnett was evicted for not paying July rent. Determined vendors, led by Dennis Kelly and his wife Susette Kelly who operate Grandma’s Kids, worked with the University Plaza’s new owner, David C. Muraco of New Venture Assets LLC, to reopen the market. Classy Collectibles, located at 5933 US Highway 11, is now hosting around 55 booths in the market’s 20,000 square feet of space. The new market has arranged to advertise in local papers to spread the word that it is now open, at least for the time being. “We have been promised we can stay open through Christmas, but everything is up in the air from there,” Dennis Kelly explains. As a result, Kelly is scoping out a new location for Grandma’s Kids and the other market shops. Classy Collectibles is open Sundays and Mondays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays. For more information, call 315-386-5729. ■

Alexander Calder Flea Market Find To Sell at Christie’s A rare necklace designed by 20th century American sculptor Alexander Calder, purchased for $15 at the Brooklyn Flea Market s in 2005, will be sold at Christie’s September 26th. To be offered in the auction house’s First Open Sale of Post War and Contemporary Art, the piece is expected to go for $200,000 to $300,000. According to Bloomberg, Philadelphia resident Norma Ifi ll was perusing a flea market eight years ago when she stumbled upon the unique silver necklace, which 60 years before was hanging in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. “I thought it looked so tribal,” Ifill told Bloomberg. “I wore it about four-five times max and every time I wore it, people always admired it. I can’t believe I had a Calder necklace all this time and had no idea.” It was not until three years later, when Ifill visited an Alexander Calder jewelry exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Museum, that she realized the necklace could be a bona fide piece of art. After speaking with the exhibition’s curator, Ifill reportedly took the necklace to the Calder Foundation in New York, where its status was confirmed. ■

UNLIKE HUMANKIND, all flea markets are not created equal. Learning to recognize the different types of markets, and how each serves a unique purpose, will save you time, money and frustration where your flea market business is concerned.

Learn to discern Exploring different markets to determine where to sell your wares should be a thought out process. It is not as simple as choosing a place because it has a lot of shopper traffic. You need to find venues that are not only bustling, but also are suitable for your merchandise and your price points.

Here are a few areas to consider: Sellers’ vs. Buyers’ Markets: These are not absolutes, but generalizations based on whether a flea market leans more towards being a better place for professionals to sell at or to buy from. Obviously, for the most part, you want to sell at sellers’ markets, where you are more likely to get better prices for your medium to high-end merchandise. However, if you sell inexpensive merchandise, or, if you do not mind “wholesaling” to other professionals, you might do well at buyers’ markets.

Year-round vs. Specialevent Markets: Special-event flea markets, held anywhere from once a year to once a month, often have festive feels that tend to put customers in spending moods. If you have choices, a good strategy is to plan your yearly schedule around special-event flea markets and use the year-round ones to fill in the gaps.

New vs. Used Markets:

Here are some clues to look for when you visit a potential selling venue: • More than one vendor says: “The people are nice but they want everything for nothing.” Probably a buyer’s market. • Several shoppers say: “The stuff here is beautiful but so expensive.” Seller’s market.

merchandise? If a flea market separates vendors by merchandise type, look for inequities. For example, if the used section of a particular market is smaller than the main section, off the beaten path or costs less per space, then the market is more favorable to new merchandise.

Do your homework When visiting flea markets at which you are considering setting up shop, ask questions, dig deep and take notes. After visiting several venues, go over your notes, compare the pros and cons, and then make an informed decision.
