FLEA MARKET traffic continues to build year-over-year in an economy rebounding from a recession, and flea market vendors are shopping carefully for venues dedicated to attracting shoppers, and for suppliers that offer the best prices. These are among the findings of the 2013 State of the Flea Market Industry research, conducted by Sumner Communications, publisher of the Merchandiser Group magazines and FleaMarketZone.com. In February of 2013, Sumner Communications administered two online surveys, one to market managers and another to market vendors. Overall, the surveys revealed a sense of optimism among managers and vendors alike. Around 53 percent of managers surveyed say shopper traffic this year is about the same as last year, while 29 percent say it has increased. This rise in market activity builds on last year’s growth, as nearly 50 percent of managers surveyed in 2012 said traffic had increased over 2011. Likewise, 41 percent of vendors surveyed say they expect to see an increase in their annual sales revenue over 2012, whereas last year, 41 percent of vendors said revenue was about the same as 2011. The most effective sales strategies, according to vendors, are: • Good prices (87.9 percent). • Personality (63.7 percent).

FLEA MARKET REPORT This year’s survey also found that the majority of vendors (58 percent) have smartphones, enabling them to cater to shoppers who want to pay with credit cards by using payment apps. Choosing a marketplace is also key to success, and nearly 88 percent of vendors surveyed cite good customer traffic as the number one consideration in this regard. Markets are drawing in customers through advertising, and more than 82 percent of managers surveyed say they promote their markets. The top three media used are flyers (71.4 percent), newspaper ads (64.3 percent) and social media posts (50 percent), with social media posts noted as one of the most effective means. More than 70 percent of managers say they have a web presence, such as a website or Facebook page. Special events are also a vital means to attract consumers. Around 59 percent of markets, both this year and last, host special events, with the top three being: • Holiday celebrations, such as those centered around Halloween and Christmas, (70 percent). • Prize drawings (60 percent).

Low cost space rental remains the number two consideration in choosing a market this year (57.6 percent) as it was last year (63.6 percent). A convenient location is sought by 54.5 percent of vendors this year, as it was by 52.3 percent of vendors last year. Market cleanliness also ranks high among vendors’ desires. The flea market industry continues to be a promising venture for many businesspersons. Some 58 percent of vendors have been in the industry for at least six years, and 16 percent have run their businesses for 21 or more years. These findings are much the same as the 2012 survey, when around 56 percent of vendors had been in business for a minimum of six years and 15.3 percent had been operating for 21 or more years. Similarly, of managers surveyed, nearly 90 percent have been in the industry for more than six years with more than 41 percent in the industry for 21 years or more. In addition, around 41 percent of managers operate booths at their markets. This bodes well for vendors, as it gives managers hands on experience, and enables them to relate to vendors on multiple levels. Once again, the vast majority of flea market vendors

The 2013 survey shows jewelry is the number one product category, sold by nearly 50 percent of vendors, followed by gifts/novelties (43.5 percent), collectibles (41.2 percent) and apparel/clothing (38.9 percent). Furthermore, vendors say the top selling merchandise categories at their markets are jewelry, apparel/ clothing and antiques/used/vintage merchandise. Managers also name these three categories as the top sellers at their markets. When choosing wholesale suppliers, product value/price is most important to nearly 70 percent of vendors, followed by product quality (59.3 percent) and low or no minimum order (56.1 percent). These results mirror last year’s survey, when nearly 77 percent of vendors cited product value/price and 64.5 percent named product quality as key factors. Asked why they like their favored suppliers, nearly 73 percent of vendors say they offer the best prices, followed by ease of ordering (50 percent). Internet usage continues to trend up with 86.2 percent of vendors saying they access wholesaler websites and online catalogs to shop for and purchase merchandise. Nearly 85 percent of vendors say they prefer to respond to ads they see in print by visiting the supplier’s website or sending an email. While only 22.6 percent of vendors have a website, up slightly from 17.9 percent in last year’s survey, about two thirds of vendors have a presence on social media. Of vendors with a social media presence, 100 percent are on Facebook, 28.6 percent are on Twitter and 19 percent are on Linkedin. continued on page 68

GLOBAL SOURCES’ China Sourcing Fair, now in its third year, will be held June 25-27, 2013, at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, FL. The show is the largest China-products exhibition serving the Latin American market, and provides retailers the opportunity to source directly from a wide array of quality suppliers from China, India and Korea. Last year, the Miami fair drew around 800 manufacturers and suppliers, as well as more than 6,000 attendees, both of which were increases over the previous year. Bill Janeri, general manager at Global Sources, expects the number of exhibitors and buyers to continue to grow as more and more industry professionals gain knowledge of the benefits of attending the show. “The Miami event provides a convenient, regional location to which Latin American buyers can easily travel in between the main April and October sourcing seasons,” Janeri explains. “With visitors also

Of the 548 respondents, more than half (52 percent) have been in business for over 10 years. “This indicates that these show visitors are well-established buyers and importers of consumer products for the Latin American market,” Janeri notes. The survey also revealed that 92 percent of respondents import or plan to import from Asia. Importantly, buyers purchase across multiple product categories, Janeri stresses, “indicating that they have a larger influence on consumer products distribution in Latin America.” “Buyers around the world are constantly looking for new sources of quality products and that next hot product that will drive consumers to their stores,” Janeri continues, “and they are looking to work with manufacturers who provide a reasonable quality-to-cost trade off.” China Sourcing Fair attendees will see new products from a wide selection of suppliers from Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan).

Registered show goers also are invited to attend the free conference program, “How to Source from China.” The seminar will provide a forum for an industry insider to share insights on product quality control, logistics and supplier payment strategies, as well as boost retailers’ knowledge of greater China’s supply markets. The COD Street Fair has offered the best open-air shopping in the Coachella Valley for the past 28 years, running year-round each Saturday and Sunday. Opening at 7 a.m., with room for 340 vendors, the non-profit fair generates a net of $500,000 each year for the College of the Desert, paying for scholarships and financial aid for students. “All of our merchandise is new, and we have everything under the sun, including purses, sunglasses, watches, jewelry, clothing, and accessories,” says Gene Marchu, executive director of the College of the Desert Alumni Association. “We also have a food court, art section, farmers market, and a shuttle to drive people back and forth to their vehicles.” Vendors pay $500 per month for a 20 x 20 space, or $62 per day plus $8 insurance. Blacklights and blacklight reactive merchandise are popular among flea market shoppers of all ages, from baby boomers who remember them from their youth to pre-teens who are experiencing the fun for the first time, says Troy Grow, president of the company. Blacklight tapestries, reminiscent of the 1960s, are hot sellers, he asserts. “They are made of cloth instead of paper, and they have a bit of a hippy feel.” Around 25 styles, both retro and contemporary, are available, including the ever-popular Peace, Love and Buddha designs. The silkscreened prints feature fluorescent ink on fabric with sewn edges that will not rip, and measure 23 by 28 inches. Sporting Goods That Sell MAURICE SPORTING Goods, now celebrating 90 years in business, was established in 1923 by Maurice Olshansky as a sporting goods outlet in downtown Chicago. By 1958, the company had started to supply local discount stores with sporting goods and, today, it is the world’s largest distributor and manufacturer of wholesale fishing, camping, hunting, marine and athletic goods and accessories. The company’s main division, called Big Game International, imports brands of hunting, marine and athletic products. “Our primary business has been with mass merchant discount and big box sporting goods stores,” shares Norm Pflomm, national account manager of Maurice Sporting Goods. Presently, the company is expanding into smaller retail outlets including flea markets. Maurice Sporting Goods’ fishing and hunting products are very SKU intensive, and the company features more than 50,000 products in its online catalog. To further complicate matters, products are regional and seasonal, Pflomm states, so what sells may differ from market to market. To simplify things for vendors, the company creates individual programs to generate sales in their specific venues. “We work with some of the larger stores that span the country, including Walmart, Kmart, Sport’s Authority and Dick’s Sporting Goods, and they have us manage their businesses based on what is selling,” Pflomm points out. “We get a lot of our history off of POS sales and we apply that information to both large and small retailers.” Right now, fishing season is starting, Pflomm notes, and the company’s fishing combos, which are complete rod and reel sets, are terrific sellers with

For August and September sales, Pflomm suggests vendors stock up on hunting and fitness products. “Shooting sports are hot all year round, and we have shooting glasses which wholesale for $2.95 and retail for $15.99.” These plastic safety glasses are available with both clear and yellow lenses. “Exercise products sell well in the first and fourth quarters of the year,” Pflomm reveals. One hot item in this category is Maurice Sporting Goods’ four-pound strength training ball for women, which wholesales for $12.99 and retails for
