Google Feeds Your Appetite for Success HEN IT comes to the recipe for Internet sales success, brand and product exposure are key ingredients, and organic search engine optimization (SEO) and pay per click (PPC) are just two ways of gaining publicity.

A third, often overlooked, option for product awareness is the use of shopping comparison sites, such as Google Shopping, which is fed through the Google Merchant Center. The product feed that is submitted has been known as both the Google Shopping Feed and the Google Merchant Feed. In addition to enabling retailers to submit product feeds, the Google Merchant Feed enables merchants to run PPC advertising campaigns through Google AdWords using Product Listing Ads. Product Listing Ads are similar to PPC ads, but they often include a photo of the product along with a price.

For those who engage in both options, the possibility for exposure is far greater than for those who opt for just one solution.

To take advantage of these opportunities, however, the right elements must be in place. First, retailers must link their Google AdWords account to their Google Merchant Center account. Second, they must create a product feed which includes additional items, such as

the product UPC code, tax and shipping type. Third, retailers must set up a Product Listing Ad campaign within their Google AdWords account.

Once your Product Listing Ads are active, there are a few things you will need to do to ensure they stay active in the listings. First, be sure that a proper UPC code for each product is present. Although feeds may initially be accepted without UPC codes, the products may end up being removed from the listings due to missing information. Feeds expire within 30 days so they must be resubmitted each month, and doing this at day 28 is typically a good idea. If a feed expires, the products are removed from the product listings, and it can take some time for them to become active again. To prevent this from occurring, merchants can arrange to have Google automatically fetch the feed at a given time each month.

Concerning the retailer’s tax and shipping information for each item, there are two options. Retailers may submit tax and shipping information on a per product basis within the feed, or they can set a storewide policy for tax and shipping from within their Google Merchant Center account. The latter is easier and likely more practical for stores who have a blanket tax and shipping setup. To arrange how you would like Continued On 12

The Google Merchant Feed offers retailers who take full advantage of it a whole new means to gain customers. With a proper feed in place, retailers have the opportunity to appear up to three or four times on the same page of the Google search results: within the organic listings, in the paid search listings using traditional text ads, in the product listings and in the shopping results. Any retailer who demands maximum exposure from his or her Google listings should consider linking an AdWords account to a Google Merchant Feed as part of the sales strategy.

A Message From the CEO Dear valued reader, This year marks our 25th anniversary serving the wholesale and retail merchandise industry, and I want to thank you for choosing us to help you grow your business. Each year, we print millions of copies of both monthly and annual publications, as well as manage several industry websites.

It has been an exciting journey that began in 1987 when my father, Gene Sumner, and I bought the East Coast Merchandiser magazine, a regional monthly journal serving the flea market industry. We soon launched Western and Midwest Merchandiser magazines in order to cover the flea market and swap meet industry from coast to coast.

Within two years, we introduced Independent Retailer (formerly Cover) magazine and in 1990 my brother, Woody Sumner, came on board as publisher of that periodical. We then launched Wholesale Central and Closeout Central, which are now the leading online resources for wholesale merchandise, and, in 1996, Ron Fisher joined our team as publisher of Web Wholesaler magazine, the publication for online wholesale buyers.

Along with the Merchandiser Group magazines, which reach over 100,000 vendors of new merchandise each year, we created and manage FleaMarketZone.com, where vendors find daily news and product information.

SEO: Make Your Website Work

SEARCH ENGINE optimization (SEO) is one of the most important, and elusive, elements of an ecommerce website. It is important because of the impact organic search traffic can have on ROI, and it is elusive because search engines are always changing the rules. Still, there are a few core SEO principles that Google and other search engines recommend which should play an integral part in your online strategy.

1) Stop Any Black Hat Stuff. Do not buy links online or allow anyone to do so on your behalf. There are many fly-by-night SEO firms that will guarantee you the world and do nothing more than purchase lots of bad links pointing at your website. Buying links is against Google’s guidelines, and Google is penalizing websites that participate in such schemes. Go whitehat, and follow Google’s guidelines.

2) Collect Data. SEO without data is like a pilot flying blind. You absolutely must know the keywords that are converting on your website. Set up Google analytics with proper conversion and goal tracking in order to see where your revenue is coming from on a keyword level. This will help direct your SEO efforts.

3) Social Media. Long ago, if you were putting a link online, you were likely a Webmaster doing so on a website that you managed. Things have changed drastically. Today, consumers are posting their own links online via social media like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, and Google is paying attention to these metrics as well as to consumer reviews. More than 60

percent of adults worldwide are using social media and online sellers, at the very least, should start a Facebook page and Twitter account. A strategy and time are required to be successful in this realm, and you should commit your resources to social media as another extension of your business.

4) User Experience. User experience is one of the most important factors with which website owners should be concerned. Providing a great user experience will help you gain customers, obtain social clout and get natural backlinks.

You can enhance the user experience by: • Optimizing images and relying more on CSS to improve load speed • Testing for the best performing, or best experience, pages • Identifying and fixing pages that have a high drop-off rate • Reducing the amount of clicks users must make to accomplish their goals • Making sure content messaging is clear and concise

5) Have good, useful content that is coded properly. The number one recommendation Google makes to webmasters is to develop excellent content that will help users accomplish their goals. Users tend to Continued On 20

Think about the keywords for your content, and the search intent behind them. For many ecommerce customers this can be accomplished with a well-written blog about your products and services. Content is still king, and the best content drives sales.

6) Include images and video. Rich media is often user-friendly and some people prefer video to text. Use optimized markup to ensure the topic of your content is clear to Google, and provide a heading with an H1 tag, and sub-headings with H2, H3 and H4 tags as needed. Use an alt attribute within your image tags and title attributes on your links. Don’t be afraid to link-out to useful resources either. You are not “leaking page

rank,” you are providing a useful reference to improve the quality and breadth of your content.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT (CRM) is a top priority for many e-tailers this year, as customer expectations regarding the online experience are at an all time high. In order to contend in the ecommerce arena, some e-tailers are turning to service providers to gain an edge on the competition. Polarview Sunglasses Are FAA Approved

THE HOTTEST trend in sunglasses is not as much about design as it is about functionality, according to David Zeuner, CEO of Sunglass Manufacturing Group.

“Polarview is a new technology for sunglasses that does everything polarized lenses do to block UVA and UVB light as well as reflective glare, but, unlike polarized lenses, they don’t block instrumentation. Even in bright light, you can see screens on devices like cell phones, GPS, aviation panels and iPads. All of our sunglasses are Polarview.” Notably, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the use of Polarview glasses, and outlawed the use of polarized glasses, for airline pilots.

“Polarview takes sunglasses to a whole new level and they offer advantages consumers are looking for,” Zeuner points out. As a result, they sell significantly better than polarized lenses. Another advantage to retailers is the product’s hefty mark up. Sunglass Manufacturing Group’s sunglasses wholesale for around $2 each, and retail is $12.99 to $19.99 for men’s and women’s styles and $9.99 for children’s. Starter packs are available, and a 60-piece best seller mixed lot wholesales for $24 per dozen, for example.

“We are introducing a line of goggles this year,” Zeuner shares. “We have 20 styles with removable foam inserts. They are great for motorcycles, jet skis and wave runners because they are salt water resistant and you can see the speedometer.” For women, Zeuner says, the company’s big plastic sunglasses with logos are expected to be great sellers. “We have more than 100 women’s high

fashion styles.” Zeuner expects the Sunglam line, which is available in assorted colors and has patterned arms, to be popular. “We expect our men’s Mafia eyewear to be strong as well.” Mafia style glasses have a small side window and come in several colors. Sunglass readers with magnifying power, so users can read by the pool or beach, also will be popular in spring and summer.

Big Profits in Surplus Inventory

AMERICAN MERCHANDISE Liquidators (AML) handles salvage and surplus inventory including customer returns, catalog returns, and clearance and overstock merchandise. The company deals in mixed lots of general merchandise from retail chains, as well as from wholesale and catalog companies. Assorted merchandise is available in all overstock categories, such as general household goods, tools and equipment, furniture, sporting goods, home accents and apparel. “We have specific vendors that primarily deal with tools and equipment, and others that deal with gift related products,” explains Mike White, COO and VP of the company. “We have a very diverse line.”

Within AML’s customer return loads, 15 to 25 percent of product can be either damaged or in need of

repair, but the vast majority is sellable, White points out.

“Customers don’t always return merchandise because there is something wrong with it, and it may be a case of buyer’s remorse.” AML wholesales customer returns for pennies on the dollar, so, even if buyers discard a portion of the lot, they can turn a profit on the balance.

Retailers might buy an item for $15, for example, that wholesales for $100 and retails for $200.

When it comes to catalog returns, AML works with a number of vendors exclusively. “A catalog return, in most cases, is in very good condition and looks more like a clearance item,” White remarks. “These loads are a little more expensive than returns, but buyers are still paying pennies on the dollar.”

Clearance and overstocks are the most expensive of what AML sells but, once again, customers are paying a small percentage of wholesale. “Typically, clearance and overstocks offer more ‘like’ items and deep numbers,” White continues. “For example, you might have 15 to 20 new DVD players that are all the same and in the box. The percentage of damage and throwaway is usually very low, below ten percent.” While prices vary, buyers usually pay from 20 to 35 percent of wholesale for merchandise in this condition.

AML accepts orders by the pallet, lot and truckload, with a typical truckload comprising 26 to 52 pallets.

The price decreases as quantities increase, and buyers also save on the cost of freight to transport the product with a larger shipment. To ship a 26-pallet load, White points out, it might cost $50 to $60 per pallet, whereas to ship one or two pallets by themselves it might cost $150 per pallet.

Leather Belts Made in the USA

MEN HAVE been wearing belts going as far back as 3,000 B.C., and both genders have worn these accessories on and off throughout the years, depending on current fashion trends. Today, belts are a staple for men and popular among women. “I don’t know a man who doesn’t wear a belt everyday,” shares Howard Keller, partner of Detroit Leather Company, which launched in May of 2012. “Our focus is high quality, affordable leather belts, made in the U.S. People are tired of buying belts that are made overseas of plastic and leather.

They don’t last.” Detroit Leather Company offers men’s everyday, men’s dress and ladies’ belt lines.

The company’s main product, the men’s everyday belt, is a solid hide and there is no bonding or sewing. Available in black, brown, white, tan and burgundy, it is 1/4 inch thick and is made in four widths, from 1-1/4 inch to 2 inches. The 1-1/2 inch everyday man’s belt, for example, wholesales for $16 and retails for $30 to $35.

It recently expanded its offerings with two new products that cater to hunters and diving enthusiasts. “We plan to add new models to both the hunting and diving lines now that we have launched both,” says Jane Ji, office manager.

The weatherproof Sparker R1680, designed to suit hunters’ needs, uses an ultra bright LED bulb with one mode. This hunting light operates through a pressure switch that offers the user singlehanded control. The light also features a zoom system so that operators can adjust the focus of the beam to be broad or narrow. It includes two rechargeable batteries and a rifle mount that coordinates with nearly any rifle and scope. The Sparker R1680 typically retails for $80 to $90.

Weiita’s new diving light, the Saurus D1610, is waterproof to 30 feet. It secures to a diver’s wrist or belt, with an included strap, and powers on and

off with a rotating dial switch. The Saurus D1610 features five different settings, including strobe, three steady beams and an SOS mode unique to the diving series. Its 800-lumen bulb illuminates up to 500 yards in distance, and the rechargeable battery will last up to three hours at maximum intensity.

The device’s body is crafted of black aluminum alloy and weighs less than one pound, which is a strong selling point for end consumers. The product retails for $100, however, because its bulb is 800 lumens which Ji says is high for a waterproof light, many sellers are able to get a higher price.

Weiita offers bulk discounts calculated by volume, and wholesale pricing is available by contacting the firm directly. Retail buyers must meet the minimum order of $500. “We will mix and match a variety of different models to encourage customers to test the waters and see what their customers prefer,” says Ji. FLUSHING A toilet sends bacteria eight feet into the air before it begins to settle on nearby surfaces, according to research by Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona in Tucson. When Cindy Martin, co-owner of Cynita, Inc., learned of this, her mind raced to the toothbrushes that lay exposed on her bathroom countertop. Experienced with custom products, Martin worked with a designer to develop a lightweight, economical solution to the germy issue, and the Cover Me toothbrush protector is the result.

Cover Me is a tall dome that fits over most standard size toothbrush holders, and protects brushes from sink splashes, hairspray, room deodorizer and restroom germs. Each cover features a curved bottom to allow for enough airflow to prevent mold from forming when toothbrushes are damp and to help quicken drying time. The

product, packaged in a clear box for easy shelf display, is made from clear plastic, so as not to hide customers’ existing toothbrush holders, but Martin and her business partner, Anita Greger, already have plans to introduce translucent colored versions. The Cynita team hopes to offer customization options, such as printing corporate logos on the product so that it may be marketed to dental and orthodontist offices. “In my home, we use the Cover Me toothbrush protector to shield our own toothbrushes,” Martin says. “If you wait for a two week time span, it’s shocking to see how much residue has accumulated on top of the cover. That layer of filth would have ended up on my family’s toothbrushes, were it not for this product.”
