2017 Thesis Project “ ISLAMBOL new way of reception policies, co-living architectures and facilities for asylum seekers in small, medium and metropolitan cities of Turkey” in collaboration with Anil Sevil The study (April 2016 - March 2017), has been dealing with the adaptation processes of Syrian asylum seekers in Turkey specifically in Istanbul which is the biggest metropolitan city in the country. The presence of the Syrian asylum seekers in Istanbul is no longer temporal, they have been becoming part of the society. From the points of socio-demographic and socio-economic properties, it has been studying to be understood and analysed the adaptation issue of the asylum seekers in the research. According to the result of the research, we have been realised that Syrian asylum seekers have faced with many difficulties in respect of adapting to live in Istanbul.
Not only Syrian asylum seekers but also inhabitants of Istanbul are exposed to some problems and doubts about their city life. As a result of this research, we have been trying to find effective solutions which can support to have an easier life in Istanbul, primarily for Syrian asylum seekers and also for inhabitants of Istanbul by many factors that provide the adaptation of Syrian asylum seekers. Istanbul has always been a cosmopolitan city with different ethnic groups living together. As a part of the ancient city, Fatih district in the historical peninsula was the centre of the multicultural characteristics of the city.As now, after the first arrivals of Syrian asylum seekers in Istanbul, Fatih became one of the main districts that they inhabited. In this research, it has been analysed the reasons behind their choice of the area. This group constitutes the most crowded and poor group among the refugees. The reason for their migration is that “The first arrivals came here, the later ones continued to come here.”. They mentioned that the reason of being in that neighbourhood as firstly; because of their bad economic situation and secondly; the language problem. The main reasons behind their choice are; accessibility, an intersection of the infrastructure, lower rent prices, lots of places to inhabit, low cost living expenses, significant part of the locals knowing Arabic, integration within people.

The project area was chosen as Küçükpazar because of being one of the most Syrian populated neighbourhood in Istanbul (Fatih district). The main idea of the strategy is to create an environment for Syrian asylum seekers that provide them to integrate with the local inhabitants and start a new life in İstanbul. Also it aimed to form a new community that serves them in a positive way. By doing so, it is purposed to form an interaction between seekers and the newcomers and local people which will support the new phase of the cycle. In this system, a new symbiotic life approach will be integrated within people of the society and the Syrians. The cycle designed as an environment that seekers will stay in the residence in exchange for working in one of the jobs in the complex. The main goal of the masterplan is to create a dynamic system for Syrian asylum seekers and locals inside the existing one by using the leftover buildings. in the Kucukpazar neighbourhood. The purpose of the project has been aroused from those ruins and abandoned buildings. With the analysis of the neighbourhood, the functions were proposed due to the lack of NGO support of the Syrians around. 5 main NGO services which are law-related NGO service, health care-related NGO service, guidance-related NGO service, education-related NGO service, children and social-related NGO service are defined.
The related functions start to rise around these NGO services. Due to the easy access to an intersection point of the two main infrastructures which are The Golden Horn Metro Bridge and Ragıp Gümüşkala Street that part is considered as an entrance to the neighbourhood for Syrian asylum seekers and “guidance-related NGO office” with temporary residential building and “law-related NGO office” are located there. In the south part of the district, the main function of the buildings is residential. The first emergency co-living residential functions are located in that part of the site. Because of the strong relation with history and as the main element which defines the name of one of the main street, the historical ruin of mill building is considered as a social and cultural hub with the functions of production, education and commerce. Owing to next to the social hub, the ruins are considered as “children and social-related NGO office” with kindergarten and dormitory. By this way, the project will create a dynamic life circle for first emergency settlement and integration with the people. In addition, the neighbourhood gets benefit from that cycle in term of services that it provides.

As a result of the easy accesses to an intersection point of the two main infrastructures which are The Golden Horn Metro Bridge and Ragıp Gümüşkala Street that part is considered as an entrance to the neighbourhood for Syrian asylum seekers and it called as a ‘Reception Point’. In this way this part of the area is considered for new comers, they can learn their rights and they can get information about how to survive in a city that is new for them and moreover they can stay in ‘Guest Housing’ for their first night in Istanbul. As mentioned before in the south part the main function considered as a residential because of having full of residential neighbourhood. It called as ‘First Emergeny, Co-Housing’ because the reason is that Syrian asylum seekers can stay here not as long as they want, they can stay untill they get a job and get used to live in Istanbul. Another reason for being called as a ‘Co-Housing’ is that according to researches generally living in a large family is significant for Syrian cultures, in this way they can also share their problems with each other.
The main part of the project is ‘Cultural Exchange Point’ because of being burdensome to get a work permit (long time, labour and money are required), refugees are reluctant to apply. However, they need to work for supply their families needs. That’s why most of them work illegally. The employers who use that opportunity, give them a job in return for really little monthly or weekly fee. Syrian asylum seekers accept those jobs due to need of urgent money to pay their rents, feed their families, sustain their lives. With creating ‘Cultural Exchange Point’ - especially ‘Social hub’ , it aimed to provide job opportunities for Syrian asylum seekers. Owing to being giant scale of the Social Hub, several functions could be designed, in this way apart from syrian asylum seekers like nighbors, tourists and other people can come to spend their lesuire time in Social Hub. and they can integrate with syrian asylum seekers more easily. In addition thanks to the historical ruin of mill building’s height, in such a way two stories with different levels can be created to provide diferent functions. Such an example can be seen on Section 1_1 of ‘Social Hub’ and ‘Kindergarten and Canteen’ considered as two stories with diverse levels.

1_ the mass was choosen like detached from Doğan Apartment and the clear open space has been designed for public
Mixed-Use Complex _ Galata district, Istanbul Galata district in Istanbul is becoming more popular because of filled with quirky shops, designer boutiques, several nice hotels and restaurants. Another popular point of Galata is “Serdar-ı Ekrem Street”. Doğan Apartment in Serdar-ı Ekrem Street.; is a key figure of the street according to which is changing from public to private. Today nobody can get inside without permission which caused it to become private space. To avoid this isolation from neighborhood I designed some seating spaces end of the building and created clear space like square.

The facade which is looking opposite the DoÄ&#x;an Apartment is designed semi open spaces in workshop places and these places provide lightweight of the mass. In Galata most of the workshops for artists and craftmens are becoming high-end boutique shops and galleries. The main goal is design the mixed-use complex to providerenting place for artist to work and live . Therefore I proposed the renting place for artist to work and live such as exhibition space; workshops and accommodation. I designed the workshops place at the same floor so the artist have a chance for conversation and commented of their works. Also everybody can go to these worshops and see artists work spaces and artworks. Their accommodation is located on the upper floor so the artist can go easily their homes from workshops after work.
Thanks to the position of the new massing, the courtyard can create a passage to the Serdar-Äą Ekrem Street. In this way people can go through the new street with feeling new facades which reminds DoÄ&#x;an Apartment. With that new narrow street people can experience the vertical garden of the new building which amplifies the resonance of the relation with existing historical apartment and the newly designed proposal.

2013 Spring Semester _ ICSA in JAPAN_Inter-Cultural Study of Architecture in Japan_Bachelor
Waterfront Paradise_Nishinomiya, Japan Our ICSA group consist of ten female students and we studied at “Mukogawa Women University” in Nishinomiya, Japan. Firstly we followed the ‘Architectural Studio in Japan’ course before going to Japan and created our proposal on the model based on previous years studies to have recognation to our location and culture.
The site is located in Nishinomiya which is one of the Artificial islands in Osaka. The process is started with designing a part of the island in urban scale. All circulation part is designed from the beginning including car, pedestrian and bike roads. The island is redesined and reconsidered with residential, social, green and commercial spaces. One of the most significant point of the project was to design water ways and canals in the island. The difficulties within is this site was about how to entegrate the water to the site so that the habitants can feel the aspect of water in their daily lives. The project was considered as both city planning and highrise housing complex designing. Hence, in chosen part of the island, highrise residential buildings are designed with giving opportunity to interaction with canals and social environment.

The masterplan is enriched with additional large canals for different purposes and well-dispersed road network. Such solution makes people feel more that they live an island. The main part of the island is located in the center of the whole site. This place is considered as a gathering space where there are entertainment spaces, concert areas for the people to enrich the facilities of the whole island. In this way people can see this centered place from every side of the island or from their balconies or windows. These public places play on important role in the definition of the masterplan and it’s concentric diffusion. Public areas and activities remain in the core whilst the residential zones are far from them.
When I started to design the part of selected complex, I choose the idea of living organism for the high rise building to create a small community into their inner and outer garden and encourage the neighboorhood relationships for the inhabitant. Each houses has their own terraces and with a different orientation to create diverse perspective of the island. One of my approach to the project was the connection part of these buildings is the ‘slab ’. The slab towards to canals to create relation between water and besides the slab was designed to create common spaces for the people. Another approach in the project was the ‘‘connective slab’’ idea. The canopy-kind structure joins the massings and guides people towards the canal, meanwhile creating a walkway and a socializing path.

Mixed-Use Complex _ Berlin, Germany Designing mixed-use complex in Alexandrinen Strasse, Berlin reflects how the building should be a part of neighboorhood. The project is almost fully surrounding with residential building so, in this project I tried combine different functions integrated into one building. The main purpose of this project is that ; to desing more iconic mixed-use complex in Alexandrinen Strasse to give a cultural identity to the area. The main element of the building is the courtyard formed by gathering two main function together which are theatre and library. The indoor theater becomes a stage for the courtyard, creating an outdoor amphitheater when opened. There are two main entrances of this building for library and theatre.
2_ Open Air Amphitheatre The stage can be carried to the outdoor thus, the place can be used as an open air amphitheatre space, attracting people from all around the building. 3_ Nouveau Performance A unique space for performances created with audiences simultaneously in the theather and the courtyard. Performance have to be created to accomodate this unique configuration with performers having to consciously choose which audience to face.

The embedded entrances are more eye catching to feel the compactness of building. The courtyard can be adapted tÄą different function for various opportunities and the main circulation is surrounding the courtyard. The other main elements which are created to give a mobility to the project are the cubes. These are small furniture utilized in indoor space and also outdoor space. The cube which is used as the stool can be gathered together and used in order to form a stage in the courtyard. The continuos glazed facade brings the idea of openness to the surrounding and attracts people towards the public places and the courtyard.
The courtyard which is placed in the centre of the project is giving a feeling more lightness to the mass of the building. People who wants to go to the library or theatre, must pass through the courtyard. In this way people are guided to feel the greenery of the courtyard while they are reading a book or walking in the building from every part. Thanks to the shape of the building because of giving an opportunity to sitting layout of the theatre is defined. Hence the atmosphere of the theatre is giving a feeling of space and the height of the building to the audience automatically and atmosphere of the building is experienced all over the building. The two functions opposed to each other create a formal connectivity and imposing a symmetrical feeling.

geological/biological aspects of the region have led us realize how they are intertwined. This conjuct relation created problems in the region such as the disorganized land usage of the periphery, which amplifies significant social and urban disconnections.
Pompeii Laboratory _ Naples, Italy
The lack of existing public facilities and resources have constricted the interest in this area which triggered the enhancement of illegal presence of buildings inside the natural park. To solve them, the natural and artificial layers of Vesuvius were studied as a unified system and it was divided in “Transversalities’’ to transform distributed maps and enable nodes of attraction along the mountain.
Team: Sunay Altıntepe, Elena Alexsandrov, Juan Esteve, Carmen Mandado Espiñeira, Francesca Fantini, Gizem Kadıoğlu, Cem Ozbasaran, Tommaso Paino, Selin Serce The landscape and landform of Vesuvius requires a decent comprehension of the existing elements and how they transform throughout history. Subgroup Team : Sunay Altıntepe, Gizem Kadıoğlu, Selin Serce The project focuses on two of these systems which include the main archeological sites and examines profoundly the impact of the landscape on settlements, in order to generate solutions in these areas for contemporary urban demands. With these ‘’paths’’ and ‘’systems’’ the aim is to improve the quality of accessibility to the volcano from different parts of the region such as the coast and the city, and linking strong formations in the area. The traces of settlements are still present and are able to create a unique spiritual sense within the area. The view of the volcano from Pompeii is monumental and the road to Vesuvius is considered as a spiritual and visual experience, yet these feelings are lost when reached to the border of the National Park.
Considering the wilderness of the area, the historical path is defined for people who want more natural and sportive experience and to reach this only pedestrian access is allowed inside this historical path. Interventions on the path are allocated due to distance, and indicated due to landscape, landform and visual connections. The project progresses as platforms, resting points and facilities for the guests, to experience visual, spiritual and natural characteristics of Vesuvius. The lack of existing public facilities and resources have constricted the interest in this area which triggered the enhancement of illegal presence of buildings inside the natural park.

The main aim of the proposal to create a public center which has a direct connection within the lake. We tried to circulate the people around our building and also walking on the roof for reaching other side. For this reason we called our project as a “ bridge ”. The proposal was categorized into 3 parts/intersections depending on their scope of work. 1_The Bridge, resembles the connectivity and the circulation of people through the building and connects the two masses.

“Bringing The Water” is the first objective of our concept sincewe want to introduce the water till the hearth of the project. In this such connection help us to organize the spaces surrounding like having direct connection with canoes. “Making The Flexure” is the second significant point of our conceptual way to comprehend because; the site is directly facing towards mountain and Ohrid Lake so the other main point of our concept should be giving an opportunity to maintain a visual connection with together in as a belvedere location.
Since the area is famous for its pure nature the design aimed to respect and implement the idea of preserverance throught the concept. The shape was designed as an extraction from the ground to create two facades, the main are towards the city and the second one facing the mountains. Two blocks of massing with diverse functions are joined by another element of nature, the canal, which works both as a conceptual admiration for the sublime nature and functional connection for all water sports with the facilities.
“Visual Permeability” is defined as a third keyword of our project with using the term together which is ‘nature’. Thanks to the landscape which of giving us an opportunity to use also sensation of view of ancient part of the city, located opposite side of the mountains. According to looking from the ancient part; the roof was designed as a natural hill as seen with the objective of making the building seen invisible.

Resonance _ Milan, Italy
Team: Sunay AltÄąntepe, Elena Casini The desing process was started from the conviction that the building in Via Guido Reni, Milan is part of a whole, of a context that is effecting itself and the surrounding in which such, the connection in the city could work more effeciently and become an opportunity to the citiziens. Thus a crucial point of the project was formed, how a kindergarden could work in straight relation with the surrounding and become a central element of the neighboorhood while keeping its functional requirements?
The idea is to have a shed system coming from differentsensations and necessities: flexible and adaptive, conforming, the necessity of diffuse and natural light inside all the spaces able to provide the best solution in terms of student comfort and contact with the nature which is very important in children psychology.

The holes of the brick wall are distributed thanks the study of the sun path: in fact, depending on the position of the sun and on the intensity of the irridiation a different effect inside the school during the day could be obtained, and ( artificial light ) outside during the evening with the artificial light on the outside. The light inside the classrooms was studied also profoundly, along with the organization of a shed system faced to the North, providing diffuse light in the inside spaces. The idea to implement a shed system came from difference sensations and necessities: fistable, the necessity of diffuse and natural light inside all the spaces, to provide the best solution in terms of confort and contact with the nature. Secondly, the idea to use the school as a place to learn in terms of how the things are made, a manifactural process that is ditinguishing the city of Milan in the world, and this case is giving the oppurtunitiy to live and experience the building thanks to the idea of implementing and industrial compositional form, the shed, providing spaces of creativity.
The idea to create laboratories for manifacture is coming from the will to connect the childhood with a creative process, that would be the connection point between the need to learn by the creation of any object or project, and the creativity of the childhood itself. In this way a new facility is given to the use of the neighborhood to the highschool a laboratory for the afternoon acitivities, and to the children the opportunity to learn and recpect by the study the manual works. The main construction material is the brick, as the long Padan tradition is effecting the architecture, the bricks have not just the aim to provide the perfect thermal condition inside, but they are giving measure to the spaces. Considering that brick is a symbol for a natural element being manufactured to become a man-used construction element. In a way resembling the objective of highligting the manufacturing process. The children are pushed to recognize the size of the things comparing everything to the nude bricks of the classroom walls, sharing their height and playing together. The bearing walls coming out of the classroom creating a sort of connection between the garden and the inside space, a safety and covered place where to keep in contact with the surrounding.

2016 _OC ‘Open City’ from landscape to exterior design -
Landscape in Motion _ ‘Land Trouvé’
Piacenza International Summer School 1st Prize Team A ‘Land Trouvé’
The workshop aims at maintaining an open dialogue among the different design specialties needed to face the problems arising from architectural, urban and environmental transformations, becoming a discussion forum and a brainstorming workshop, where issues on the general development perspectives of contemporary habitats can be discussed. Piacenza is a topical case-study because of its unique condition of liminal city facing the main Italian river which is ‘Po’ river, characterized by the overlapping and interaction of different forms of landscapes: river, agricultural, productive, urbanPo is a bold line at the scale of the territory, still in the west-east direction, but the same river path is also readable as a sequence of elements located among bank and bank, in the two sides.
Main task at this scale it’s to focus transforming-process of the River Embankments, able to set the irregular mainstream of waters reaching as main goal Fluvial Park for leisure activity. The renewal of slow-mobility network adding bike-sharing stations along the path-ways should be assumed as basic in strategy. The strategy is based to set fluvial in between spaces to link riverside and its landscape, but at the same time setting them flexibly to environmental variables. The band – so-called strip, is crossed by a very easy recognizable element as the riverbank is an embankment which is also a ridge to mark different interactive geographicregions. Currently this element is also a slow-mobility path-way running east-west. Main task, specific for this infrastructure, it’s to establish the relationship between city and river-shore.As a main perspective of the project is that river ‘Po’ seasonally merged its flow running through the plane and breaths regularly by enlarging and constructing its bed. In doing this the river project reveals the surrounding landscape in coorparating and then realising elements. As a detail of the project elements which are to highlighted the attention some specific spots. For instance, the museum made of different stage of water considering with movement, reflection, lights and shadows. The virtual connection of the project with landscape is ‘sound park’ designing with acoustic wall.

Hospital Center ‘‘New Nord Marche’’_Pesaro Italy_Private Competition_Winner
“Hospital Center New Nord Marche” is the project of Azienda Ospedaliera Ospedali Riuniti Marche Nord for private competition. The project is located in Via Cesare Lombroso, Pesaro,Italy. The project area next to the another hospital which named “Ospedale Muraglia Pesaro”. The hospital project is approximately of more than 100.000 sqm. The main purpose of the project to provide flexible and effective space for patient and inpatient people with modern desing approach.
The concept of the project inspired by hand which means combines all the things together with the common part called “main street” . The building has four wings which have different functions with having inner garden between the blocks. The key point of the project is “main street” designed to give oppurtunity to separate two parts to the building as a general view and also designed to reduce the impact of the massive look of the building with introducing voids as courtyards and bridges around it to complete the circulation. In this way people can walk around and pass through to the other parts of the building with using these bridges and can experience more open spaces even they are inside of the building. Along the fact of having more than one entrances, the main entrance is designed from the “main street” giving feeling of a spacious entrance to the people. Since the project area is located with level differences, the building is integrated in the lot for the functions with concerning this differences. The floors are designed to have balconies on every floors especially in part of the building which faces the main street.

The main purpose of the design as it mentioned before is to create efficient and useful space with maxiumum level for patient and visitors. The functional requirement of a hospital make the design process quites straight forward, get the concept and the modern approach gives the project uniqueness it needs. The design of the landscape of the hospital is another important part of the design phases because of existing and new designed infrastructure as well as topography of the area. The inner garden of the wings at the buildings are overlapped with the landscape and also are designed to provide greenery with different levels on the building. In the detailing of the landscape design the greenery of the main entrance is designed with different levels naturally to have sitting places and also the pedestrian way is considered to combine the “Ospedale Muraglia Pesaro” and to reach the car parking areas.
The other significant part of the project is the design of the facade consireder with a modern approach. Micro-perforated panels are the main element of the facade design applied in different way and sizes. Acccording the needs of the inner spaces function panel in micro-perforated aluminium sheets are used with different intensity of the openings. In addition the sun-shading elements are designed with using the advantage of the panel in micro-perforated sheets. The other main element of the facade design is brise-soleil is used with panel in micro-perforated sheets to create dynamic view of the hospital facades. In consequence the elements of the facades and variable shape of the building created dynamic and different approach of the hospital design.

Salut Paris _Reclaiming the Urban Voids of Paris_International Competition _Honorable Mention_ published on “MAISON FRANÇIASE TURKEY” magazine https://uni.xyz/competitions/salute-paris/ Team : Sunay Altıntepe, Cem Özbaşaran ,Gizem Kadıoğlu, Elif Parmaksız
Peripherique in Movement
Revitalization of the abandoned voids of the “Petit Ceinture” of Paris and opening it to public use with an adaptable and sustainable design of the void space, with the implementation of construction scaffoldings as design elements superposed on a grid system of modularity.Urban voids created by the abandoned railways induce a network of connectivity which should be re-designed and be opened to the city and its users, with a certain level of flexibility and attainability. Each modular design
unit can be moved anywhere within the network thanks to custom carriage system moving along the rails. Primary analysis on the network of Petit Ceinture shows the potential of these spaces and how important it is to maintain the naturality of these voids with minimized interventions. In this regard, to contradict against today’s mass production and consumption-centred mentality, the project aims to “re-invent” an existing construction element, the scaffoldings, and to convert it into a possible design element to reduce the cost and natural impact, whilst increasing the design flexibility, modular usage and ease of access. The mono-functional large voids of the urban fabric provides extraordinary opportunities to experiment new open spaces that consist new kind of relationship between its users and its design methodology. The architectural functions proposed in the project feature open air cinema, public library, flea market, aquaponics station, bar, urban farming, leisure and service areas, circled by green areas and interconnected through different connection paths. These functions can vary between the floors as well, given the fact that the expansions can also be in vertical and being able to connect different levels of the cityscape. The easy assembly responds to this need of adaptability and is the main theoretical approach for the choice of modular but light structures that are able to create space of activities with the choice and direction of its users.
