Patrick Sunbury
Founder and Design Director at Patrick Sunbury Design. Patrick Sunbury is a fifth generation Californian with deep family roots in agriculture, conservation and construction. A highly functional, naturalist approach to design is the mainstay of his design. His work is defined by a love for native plants, authentic sustainable materials and inventive space planning. At the core of Patrick’s design is a deep fascination with plants that has developed a “plant whisperer” approach of integrating native, climate-adapted and edible plants into residential landscapes. This is coupled with a rigorous focus on functionality and aesthetics from his architecture background. Patrick also operates a small, family run tea farm and botanical garden in the California Delta. The farm and its gardens serve as a laboratory to test new designs and observe plant/material suitability for California gardens. Patrick holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture degree from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelors in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. As part of his time at SWA Group, his work won the American Architecture Prize in 2017, National ASLA Honor Awards in 2016, and Texas ASLA Honor Awards in 2018, 2019.
