THE DIY BALANCE – creativity meets expertise

There is something deeply satisfying about rolling up your sleeves and transforming a space with your own two hands. DIY projects allow us to express creativity, save money and add personal flair to our homes. But as any seasoned DIYer will tell you, knowing when to call in the experts is just as important as knowing when to go it alone.

Take this year’s bathroom, paint and design trends – 2025 is all about spa-like serenity with touches of bright colours that inspire happiness (a dopamine blast of colour if you will) and natural textures that create calming retreats. While a fresh coat of moisture-resistant paint can instantly uplift a space, tackling plumbing or ventilation without professional input can lead to costly mistakes. The key is balance –DIY where you can, but bring in experts when necessary to ensure durability and safety.

WINDOW cleaning GOES HIGH TECH

Meet the HOBOT-S6 Window Cleaning Robot

Tof the never-ending buckets and cloths and the headache of using ladders to reach all your windows? Well, the HOBOT-S6 is a game-changer – designed to do the work for you. By Trevor Brewer, director at Solenco

The HOBOT-S6 Pro Window

Cleaning Robot has just been introduced in South Africa by lifestyle technology company Solenco. This high-tech lightweight robot is the first dual mop-polish robot combining advanced technology, safety features and an eco-friendly design.

This device features a patented dual mop reciprocating polish system, operating at an impressive 600 times per minute with a 4mm stroke. This high-frequency action effectively removes stubborn dirt and grime, ensuring your windows remain clear and shiny for longer periods. Additionally, the dual ultrasonic water spray system nebulises water into fine mist particles to provide a thorough clean without leaving any water stains.

Thanks to the ultra-fast wiping action, the static electricity on the window is neutralised

at the same time to ensure a long-lasting, clear and shiny window, free from leftover mop debris.

The two caterpillar belts attached to HOBOT move quickly at 12cm per second, allowing the HOBOT-S6 Pro to clean a 1m² area in 2.6 minutes, while the enlarged and extended cleaning cloths can reach deep into corners for the largest coverage of up to 26×26cm² areas.

SAFETY FEATURES

Safety is a top priority. The robot is designed with an anti-falling control algorithm, a secure DC power jack and an uninterruptible power system (UPS) that provides a 20-minute backup in case of power outages. For added security, a 4.5-metre safety rope ensures the device stays in place during operation. The eco-friendly design includes washable microfibre cleaning cloths and a replaceable water tank, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

The HOBOT-S6 Pro offers intelligent control options through a smartphone app or remote control. Users can customise voice prompts and update firmware via the app, ensuring they can always access the latest features and improvements.

It is designed for glass of all thicknesses, including thin and thick glass, multilayer glass and laminated glass, and moves well over rough areas.

Its high-efficiency brushless DC motor and metal fan ensure a long lifespan, durability and low noise.

Incorporating these trends will give you the bathroom of your dreams. By Lecico

Spa-like atmosphere

The top trend for 2025 is creating a spa-like environment with soft neutral colours, rainfall showers, heated floors and dimmable lighting. Natural materials like stone and wood add warmth, and fluffy towels and candles complete the sanctuary vibe.

Organic materials

Natural materials, such as wood, stone and bamboo, bring the outdoors in, creating a grounded and peaceful atmosphere. Wooden vanities, stone countertops and sustainable sourcing are key features. Simplicity is essential to let these materials shine.

Statement tiles

Large-format tiles dominate with their clean, streamlined look and low maintenance. Patterned and textured tiles add personality with Moroccan-inspired designs and geometric shapes making a comeback.

4 5 7 8 6

Bold colours and patterns

Deep greens, rich blues and terracotta tones are gaining popularity, breaking away from all-white designs. Patterns, from chevron floors to vibrant mosaics, help create an immersive bathroom experience.

Smart technology

Innovative tech features, including smart showers, voice-controlled lighting and self-cleaning toilets, enhance convenience and efficiency. These solutions combine style with sustainability and ultimately reduce water and energy consumption.

Statement lighting

Lighting transforms a bathroom into a showpiece. Backlit mirrors, pendant lights and layered lighting add elegance and functionality, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Freestanding baths

Freestanding baths continue to symbolise luxury. Whether modern or traditional, they serve as stunning focal points to heighten the room’s appeal.

Biophilic design

Biophilic design integrates nature through plants, natural materials and features like skylights or water elements. This approach fosters relaxation and a sense of connection with the outdoors.

Dopamine DECOR An uplifting new decor trend

Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, explains the key elements of dopamine decor, a design trend evoking feelings of positivity and happiness, and shares tips for incorporating it into your home

If you’re thinking of revamping your home, you might want to consider the latest decor trend that has become the new darling of interior design. Dopamine decor aims to evoke feelings of positivity, happiness and wellbeing by incorporating elements that trigger the release of dopamine – a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward.

This trend is a response to the uncertain and often stressful world we live in with people increasingly seeking spaces that provide comfort, joy and a mental escape, and what better way than through their home decor?

Inspired by colour psychology, dopamine decor encourages bold hues that evoke

energy and positivity – think bright yellows, energising oranges, rich greens and dynamic blues. It’s a design approach that’s unafraid of a little chaos. Instead of looking for perfectly matched items, dopamine decor invites a curated clash of textures, patterns and colours that feel both spontaneous and intentional.

KEY ELEMENTS OF DOPAMINE DECOR

Dopamine decor is a layered approach to design that emphasises several elements:

• Vibrant colours: bright, happy colours, such as fuchsia, teal, mustard yellow and cobalt blue, are foundational. Instead of limiting these to accent pieces, dopamine decor embraces larger statements like a painted wall, colourful sofas or vibrant rugs.

• Playful patterns: mixing patterns is key in dopamine decor. Florals, stripes, geometric shapes and abstract prints come together in a quirky yet cohesive way. This can be seen in throw pillows, wallpaper and art pieces.

• Sentimental items: beyond colour and pattern, personal mementoes make the style truly yours. Displaying items that bring personal joy, such as a vintage record player, travel souvenirs or framed family photos, gives the space a warm, nostalgic feel.

• Unique textures: layers of different textures, from velvet couches to wool throws and textured wallpaper, add visual interest and make a space feel dynamic and multidimensional.

HOW TO INCORPORATE DOPAMINE DECOR IN YOUR HOME

Integrating dopamine decor into your space doesn’t mean you need a complete overhaul. The style is flexible and can be adapted in small ways or sweeping changes, depending on how bold you want to go.

1 2

Start small with colourful accents

If you’re hesitant to go all-in, start with small accents such as throw pillows, blankets or rugs in bold colours. This allows you to experiment with the dopamine decor vibe without making a major commitment.

Create a feature wall

A statement or accent wall is an excellent way to experiment with dopamine decor. Choose a colour that sparks joy for you – whether a rich teal, a sunny orange or a cheerful pink – and use it to cover one wall in a room. Alternatively, you could experiment with a bold patterned wallpaper to add energy to the space. Complement it with framed art that echoes similar colours or add a few personal photos for a touch of nostalgia.

3

Mix and match patterns

One of the signature aspects of dopamine decor is its use of multiple patterns. Florals paired with polka dots or stripes against abstract designs create a fun, eclectic vibe. Try mixing patterned throw pillows on your couch or layering different styles of rugs to give your room depth and texture. The trick is to stick to patterns that share a common colour palette to avoid overwhelming the space.

4

Display personal items and sentimental decor

Dopamine decor thrives on personal touches, so showcase items that mean something to you. From family heirlooms to travel souvenirs, decorating with personal items can make a space feel uniquely yours. Incorporate a favourite piece of furniture, a treasured collection or framed memories from special moments in your life. This not only adds visual interest, but also creates a home that brings a sense of joy and familiarity.

5

Play with unique furniture and lighting

Bold furniture pieces, such as a bright velvet sofa or a patterned armchair, can become focal points in a room. Dopamine decor encourages thinking outside the box, so consider playful shapes, vibrant fabrics and unconventional styles. Lighting is also crucial; use statement lighting like coloured lamps, neon lights or even disco balls to add a whimsical touch to the space.

6

Layer in plants for a natural boost Houseplants are a wonderful way to add colour and life to your interiors. In dopamine decor, plants can serve as a natural, grounding element among all the colours and patterns. Opt for vibrant pots or hanging planters to add a creative touch to your greenery. Plants also enhance the energy of a room, promoting relaxation and positive vibes.

Discover your interior design STYLE AND elevate YOUR SPACE

How to achieve timeless design. By Italtile

At Italtile, we believe it’s wise to understand the interior design style you lean towards before you play with it. There are so many looks, from passing trends and curious fads to the everlasting looks. It gets complicated, so we’ve refined the multiple interior design styles into four key style categories.

• Classic Elegance: timeless charm for every home.

• Natural Harmony: bring the outdoors in.

• Urban Oasis: the inner-city vibe with an industrial edge.

• Modern Marvels: sleek and sophisticated minimalist spaces.

Each style has its unique character and we’ll explore how to choose elements to create your dream space.

CLASSIC STYLE

Think everlasting elegance, sophistication, refinement and warmth. Classic interiors often feature:

•Soft colour palettes in subtle neutrals.

•Sumptuous furnishings.

•Luxurious materials like marble and wood.

•Statement lighting.

•High levels of craftsmanship.

Within the Classic Style category, you’ll find:

•Traditional style. Lots of dark wood, heavy, expensive fabrics and chandelier action à la 18th-century England and Europe.

•Transitional style. A merging of traditional elegance and contemporary lines and textures. Old and new. Masculine and feminine. Curves and straight lines. But still, no fuss, fewer accessories.

TOP TIP

• Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Art Nouveau is underpinned by highly decorative silverware, iridescent lustreware, peacock colours, organic patterns and long, sinuous, feminine lines. Art Deco champions geometric shapes, high-octane Hollywood glitz, mirror furniture, black lacquer details and super-contrasting colour schemes (hot pink with animal print, for example).

• Shabby chic. This style has classic roots: a fusion of vintage elegance and antique decor. Gently worn linens and cottons often feature old rose patterns or gingham checks, plus ruffles and soft pastels for a lived-in aesthetic.

Stick to a neutral canvas and use texture to layer things up. Favour richly grained wood-look tiles like the Tacora Camel InOut Rectified Matt Glazed Porcelain Tile that will create a beautiful flow if installed throughout the house and outside on your deck. Create a luxe, traditional aesthetic with Brilliant Statuario 800x1600 marble-look tiles, with classy silvery veining. Marble in the kitchen? Yes, please, especially if it’s our Herringbone Milky White Marble Mosaic tile for a refined splashback.

NATURAL STYLE

A stress-busting aesthetic that finds inspiration in the natural world creates a soothing haven to promote wellbeing with organic cues and brings the outdoors inside, with:

•Earthy tones.

•Organic textures like wood and stone.

•Biophilic elements like plants and natural light.

•Sustainable materials.

This mindful, nature-inspired interior design category is led by Biophilic Style

This mega-trend is a nature-centric aesthetic that took root in the ‘80s, rose to prominence during the pandemic and has become a worldwide movement. If you’re passionate about incorporating natural elements into your spaces, consider indoor plants, aromatic herbal air diffusers, indoor koi ponds and

HYBRID STYLES

Mix and match to suit your sensibilities. Feel free to take your rustic affiliations into an urban loft. Be Art Deco in your beach house. Once you know the rules, you’ll know when to break them. We believe in letting your personality shine through – be eclectic and gather your favourite treasures around you. Style hybridisation shows your

wood elements and green tones in your mood boards along with floral graphics, botanical patterns and organic shapes like honeycomb hexagonal tiles.

You’re a natural stylista if you’re showing up for stylistic expression that speaks of:

•Rustic Style: natural, rough-hewn, aged and casual, a category of its own, including Tuscan, coastal and cottage feels).

•French Country Style. A relaxed Provencal style with rustic natural decor.

•Bohemian Style. A free-spirited expression with natural and organic elements, rich patterns, metals, woods, natural fabrics and animal hides, all the treasures from your travels to exotic lands.

•Scandi Style. This is about simplicity with its harmonic “Lagom” belief of balance and

TOP TIP

Wood looks rule the natural environment you’re curating. Our sustainably made, top-tier Moda Vinile Vinyl Wood-Look Tile ranges look good, feel good underfoot and ... last good, too. Consider a wooden ceiling for that farmhouse aesthetic, not just the floor. Bring in the biophilia big-time with our exclusive lush botanical patterned tiles by Italian tile masters Ceramica Sant’Agostino. We’re thinking Sable Jardin 01 with its jungle of fronds or gentle Sunwood Jardin 08 with its fresh take on country meadow vibes for your classic cottage. A green-toned bathroom will invoke serenity – consider our Vogue Esmeralda Ceramic Wall Tile with its intense, nature-inspired hue and artisanal finish. Finally, look at our stunning Natural Stone Cladding for a unique fireplace surround or your outside areas.

moderation, natural elements and pale wood tones.

•Japandi. A combination of the best of Scandinavian and Japanese interior design – natural elements serene and uncluttered with wood and greenery front and centre.

•Jungalow Style. This style supports artisan makers, connects with nature and enjoys the contrast of quiet hues with bold and interestingly curated gallery walls. Cottagecore. Championed by big woven baskets, a wreath on the door, vintage or handcrafted home decor, patchwork quilts and candles. Cosy and quaint, this is slow living, aka “homesteading”, taking us back to nature. It was brought to us during the pandemic by social media influencers.

confidence and allows your authentic self to show up in all your perfectly imperfect Wabi Sabi – another aesthetic glory. But before you pour your heart and hard-earned money into a fresh new style makeover:

URBAN STYLE

Inspired by city living, reclaimed warehouses and loft spaces, Urban Style is all about:

•Industrial touches like exposed brick, wooden beams and cement with interesting metal elements.

•Neutral colour schemes.

•Open space and big windows.

•Edgy textures, often featuring reclaimed materials.

•Avant-garde art and accessories.

Urban Style allows city dwellers to cleave to the adjacent looks of:

• Industrial Style. In home decor, use super-edgy textural elements like exposed gantries and brick walls, copper piping and raw concrete.

MODERN STYLE

Embrace sleek, uncluttered living and the “less is more” minimalist ideal with:

• An adherence to concrete, glass, metal and natural light in the build.

• Straight lines and uncomplicated forms.

• Achromatic or monochromatic colour schemes.

• The stillness and serenity of “empty space”.

Within the big Modern Style category, you’ll find:

• Contemporary Style. Don’t confuse Contemporary with Modern, though. Modern design refers to a specific period in the early to mid-20th century. Contemporary style refers to a style that is current and ever-evolving. It reflects what is happening right now in the design world and refers to anything of the present moment.

• Mid-Century Modern. The incredible design movement that bloomed from the ‘30s to the ‘60s and then returned as an aesthetic after the ‘80s. Mid-Century Modern style revolutionised the way we live today with design elements we take for granted, like open-plan spaces, indoor plantings and sliding doors.

• Minimalist Style. This refers to a radically pared down, almost monastic aesthetic. (The opposite of Maximalist Style, which loves all the colours, patterns, textures, complex forms and an abundance of decoration and accessories. Done right, it is bursting with charisma and eccentricity.

TOP TIP

Concrete looks immediately elevate the urban aesthetic in home decor, from living rooms to bathrooms and kitchens, to lay the canvas for your pared-down room layouts. No cement look does it better than Italtile’s new Form Concrete by Ceramica Sant’Agostino.

A high-end, award-winning Italian porcelain tile that mimics purposely visible, unfinished concrete with the imprint of structural wooden formwork. Take this industrial edge onto your kitchen counters for real kitchen cool. But wait, there’s more urban cool at Italtile, with our DripArt Rectified Matt Glazed Porcelain Tile 600x1200. Choose DripArt Copper or DripArt Verdigris, Sant’Agostino’s remarkable eco-chic take on the imaginative world of oxidised metal. For some added eclectic urban soul, consider Retro Patchwork Matt Glazed EcoTec Porcelain Tile 600x600, neutral tones with subtle patterning to bring a glow to your urban cocoon and warm up the light flooding through your floor-to-ceiling windows.

•A hybrid Urban Rustic aesthetic uses elements of country style. •Urban Bohemian and Urban Eclectic. Urban Bohemian spaces use upcycled leather incorporated into a sofa made from pieces of reclaimed metal, very Urban Eclectic. We’ve encountered side tables crafted from old washing machine drums or abandoned wooden cable reels. Imaginative, eye-catching, statement-making and unique. The second-life mindset is strong in this aesthetic.

TOP TIP

Once again, Form Concrete by Sant’Agostino rises to the occasion to create a structural, architectural statement your modernist home will love. But so does Bergstone, leader of the hunky stone pack with powerful Alpine rock looks, from our esteemed Italian tile partners Sant’Agostino. Bergstone Rectified Matt Glazed Porcelain Tile 1200x1200 with its textural Carve3D tech offers its high-altitude rock feel in dark, sand, grey and light.

LiveGreen. Whether you choose a biophilic or urban direction, the high-end Italtile porcelain and ceramic tiles you select are beautiful examples of sustainable style. You’ll be walking with a gentler footprint on this vulnerable earth of ours.

NEW trends AND INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS

Orlando Luis, CEO of Brights Hardware, shares his insights on the key trends that will shape home renovations and upgrades in 2025

This year will witness exciting transformation in South Africa’s home improvement landscape. Driven by new trends, innovative products and eager homeowners looking to refresh their living spaces, 2025 promises a wave of creative solutions.

PAINTING BECOMES A CREATIVE STATEMENT

Painting has long been one of the easiest and most affordable ways to refresh a home. In 2025, it takes centre stage as more South Africans embrace it not just for maintenance, but also as a powerful form of self-expression. New products are making waves in the local market. Duram’s RubberFlex, a rubberised waterproof coating, offers exceptional durability and flexibility, making it a prime choice for areas requiring robust protection. Plascon’s Nuroof Cool is another game-changer, reflecting heat and reducing surface temperatures – ideal for South Africa’s hot climate.

Adding a burst of personality, Dulux’s Colour of the Year for 2025, True Joy™, is a vibrant yellow designed to infuse creativity and optimism into living spaces. For eco-conscious homeowners, Amoriguard Eco-friendly Paint is gaining traction, featuring recycled fillers and low volatile organic compound content. Painting is about more than upkeep, it’s a way to reimagine spaces, inject colour and embrace creativity.

THE RESURGENCE OF SOLAR POWER

Despite a challenging 2024, solar power is making a strong comeback. With electricity tariffs set to increase in April, homeowners are turning to solar solutions to reduce their dependence on the grid and manage rising costs.

Solar panels and energy-efficient appliances, such as the Taurus water cooler, which uses ice cubes for cooling, are becoming essential for budget-conscious and eco-friendly consumers. Retailers are offering attractive promotions, making it the perfect time to invest in solar technology.

Solar has become more efficient and affordable. With flexible financing options, the transition to renewable energy is more accessible than ever.

Even small-scale solar solutions, such as solar-powered outdoor lights and rechargeable gadgets, are increasing in popularity, further driving the momentum toward sustainable living.

DIY FENCING AND CLADDING GAIN POPULARITY

Fencing and cladding are emerging as must-have features in 2025, offering aesthetic appeal and functional benefits. Nutec Fibre Cement Wendy planks are leading the charge, thanks to their affordability, durability, and wood-textured finish and are being used for perimeter fencing, gates and even exterior walls.

Beyond aesthetics, homeowners want low-maintenance and long-lasting materials. Fencing and cladding enhance security and boost a property’s curb appeal.

These materials are also making their way indoors, with homeowners using them to create feature walls and add texture to high-traffic areas such as hallways and entryways.

CORDLESS POWER TOOL TAKE-OVER

Cordless tools are evolving every year. From construction to gardening, the shift towards battery-operated tools is undeniable.

A major innovation in 2025 is the launch of the 40V Makita brushless cordless tool range,

designed for heavy-duty construction work without the hassle of cables. DeWalt has also introduced advanced cordless tools, such as the 20V MAX XR Reciprocating Saw and the 5-Inch Orbital Sander, ideal for professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike.

Brights Hardware is expanding its range of in-house tools under the Total, Stallion and Brights brands. Notably, Total’s 20V Cordless Li-ion power tool and appliance combo kits allow multiple tools to operate on the same battery platform, making them a game-changer for homeowners.

SMARTER COOLING SOLUTIONS FOR A WARMER CLIMATE

With temperatures on the rise, cooling products are essential for maintaining comfort. Energy-efficient air conditioners, such as LG’s artificial intelligence-driven models, are gaining traction, optimising performance while keeping energy consumption low.

Water-saving products, including the Dropula system – which provides real-time water usage monitoring – are also in demand. Outdoor cooling solutions, such as pergolas, misting systems and UV-protective gazebos, are gaining popularity, offering stylish yet practical heat relief.

OUTDOOR LIVING GETS A BOOST

Homeowners are increasingly treating their outdoor spaces as extensions of their homes. To meet this growing demand, Brights Hardware has introduced a 400m² open-air display at its Brackengate store, showcasing landscaping solutions, decorative pots and eco-friendly plants.

Outdoor living is more than a trend; it’s a lifestyle. People want their yards to be functional, stylish and suitable for entertaining or relaxation.

NO TOOLBOX IS COMPLETE WITHOUT THE SUPERFLEX RANGE OF ABRASIVES

The Evolution range – known as the “everyday abrasive” – boasts the perfect balance between cost and longevity. Expand your toolroom abrasives with Grindtech

Now featuring additional products, the Superflex Evolution range carries both an aluminium oxide and zirconium flap disc, segmented and continuous diamond blades, and the NEW A60Q Slimline cutting disc. Featuring fast, clean and consistent cuts, the slim design of the A60Q cutting disc delivers less heat build-up and oxidation of the material on application with reduced burrs to rework after application.

Fully reinforced for safety and quality tested to the same high standards as conventional discs, it produces multiple consistent cuts – suitable for cutting metal

sheets, profiles, pipes, rods and solid materials. Superflex abrasives are locally manufactured from the best raw materials, conforming to strict international safety standards, including OSA and EN12413.

With the latest addition of the Evolution aluminium oxide flap disc, the range now extends to serving general-purpose applications on steel and wood. Boasting a flexible polycotton backing, this disc ensures endurance and durability.

The Superflex Evolution Diamond blade is available in segmented and continuous rim. Featuring new packaging and an improved product, these blades are tough on concrete and exceptional on stone.

The segmented rim, generally used in the construction industry to cut brick, concrete and stone, will ultimately provide the fastest cut. This blade is generally used for dry cutting, as the segmented rim allows air to flow through and cool the blade during application and debris to exit faster during the cut.

The continuous rim is favoured for tilecutting, providing a slower, neater cut. Suitable for wet-cutting applications, it generally provides the cleanest cut.

Expand your toolroom abrasives with Superflex, available at major retailers.

SPOTS IN YOUR HOME YOU MIGHT BE FORGETTING TO CLEAN

A spotless home isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about health. Dust, grease and quality. By

Dust, mould and bacteria that accumulate in neglected areas trigger allergies, affect the air you breathe and even lead to infections. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain a hygienic environment, reduce health risks and promote wellbeing for you and your family. A spotless home doesn’t just look great; it creates a healthier living environment. However, there are often neglected areas in every home where dust, grease and allergens accumulate. Here’s a list of commonly overlooked spots to tackle during your next cleaning session.

1

ABOVE CUPBOARDS AND FRIDGES

The upper surfaces of kitchen cabinets and refrigerators are often forgotten. These can gather dust along with grease and sometimes cobwebs. To tackle cleaning these spots effectively start by using a cloth or duster to remove any dust present. For grease stains, you can create a mixture of water and dishwashing soap. Wet a cloth or sponge with the chosen solution. Proceed to wipe down the areas. If there are stains that won’t budge easily you can sprinkle some baking soda onto a cloth and gently scrub the surfaces. For easy cleaning in the future, put wax paper or shelf liners on the cabinets to trap dirt and grease – these can be swapped out easily when they get dirty.

LIGHT FIXTURES AND CEILING FANS

Ceiling fans and light fixtures may collect dust over time if they aren’t used often or are difficult to access. To properly clean ceiling fans, cover each blade with a pillowcase then carefully remove it to capture dust in the pillowcase. Then wipe the blades clean with a microfibre cloth. For light fixtures, remove parts, such as glass covers or shades, and wash them in warm soapy water. Remember to use a cloth to wipe parts that cannot be removed and ensurethe light fixture is turned off so the bulb can cool down before cleaning.

MICROWAVES AND OVENS

4

DOOR FRAMES AND HANDLES

Door handles are touched daily, making them hotspots for germs, however, the tops and edges of door frames are frequently overlooked when the home gets cleaned. To tackle these neglected areas you can use a dry cloth to get rid of dust from the frames. To remove dirt and fingerprints, you can wipe the door frames with a cloth and a multipurpose cleaner, focusing particularly on the tops of the doors where dust tends to accumulate unnoticed. Make sure to clean door handles using a disinfectant wipe or a damp cloth.

5 3 2

Ever seen a microwave that’s been used many times without being cleaned? Horror is an understatement. Do you ever fear that some of that old food debris stuck to the microwave may fall into your food while warming it? The insides of microwaves, ovens and dishwashers can collect grease and food debris over time if not cleaned frequently. To freshen your microwave you should heat a bowl of water with lemon slices or vinegar for five minutes to create steam, which will help loosen dirt and can be wiped off easily with a cloth. For ovens, you can prepare a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and water to apply on the surface and leave it for hours or overnight before gently scrubbing with a sponge to remove any built-up grease.

SHOWERHEADS AND TAPS

Water and mineral build-up can block showerheads and create stains on taps, diminishing their performance and shine. To effectively clean your showerhead, place a bag filled with vinegar around the showerhead and secure it with an elastic band, let it sit for an hour or two then use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the nozzles and finally, run water through the showerhead to clear any remaining deposits. To clean taps, dampen a cloth with vinegar and wrap it around the tap for 30 minutes to dissolve any mineral build-up. Tackle stains using a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and water to scrub the area softly, then polish it with a microfibre cloth for a nice shine. Cleaning these overlooked areas as part of your routine not only gives you peace of mind knowing that every spot of your home is spotless, but also promotes a healthier environment for you and your family.

Clever watering AND WATER-SAVING tips

Water conservation is an increasingly important issue, especially as we face water restrictions in A Gardena

WATER AT THE RIGHT TIME

Timing is crucial when it comes to irrigating your garden. Watering in the early morning or late evening reduces evaporation, allowing plants to absorb moisture before the sun’s heat dries them out. Avoid watering during the hottest parts of the day as much of the water will evaporate before it reaches the roots. Watering early also helps prevent diseases that can develop from prolonged moisture on leaves.

The Gardena range of water controls schedules irrigation and can be set to suit your lifestyle. Choose morning or evenings, days of the week or time of the day – Gardena water controls will take full control of your irrigation needs.

MEASURE WATER CONSUMPTION AROUND THE HOME AND GARDEN

Do we really know how much water is used around our garden and home? This is a difficult task unless you have a water-measuring device. The Water Meter AquaCount from Gardena is the perfect tool to measure your water consumption and to save water sustainably. This device can be connected to the tap or directly to the end of the hose in a horizontal or vertical position. This handy product has a 4-in-1 function that allows you to calculate water consumption per day, per season, per irrigation cycle or to view the flow rate in litres per minute.

CHOOSE DROUGHT-TOLERANT PLANTS

One of the most effective ways to save water in the garden is by selecting drought-tolerant plants that require less water. Native species are often the best choice since they are naturally adapted to your local climate and soil conditions. Other options include succulents, lavender, sage and ornamental grasses. These plants are resilient in dry conditions and can add beauty to your garden while minimising water usage.

GROUP PLANTS BY WATER NEEDS

Organising plants based on their water requirements helps ensure efficient watering. By creating hydrozones, where plants with similar water needs are grouped together, you can avoid overwatering those that don’t need it and ensure thirsty plants get enough moisture. This strategy reduces waste and promotes healthier plant growth.

INSTALL DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Micro-drip irrigation is an efficient way to deliver water directly to plant roots, minimising water loss through evaporation and runoff. Micro-drip systems offer irrigation of plant rows and flower beds with pinpoint accuracy. Drip irrigation can be automated, making it a convenient option for consistent, controlled watering. Gardena Micro-Drip-System kits are designed for flower pots or planter pots, giving you the option to extend up to 15 flower pots. Use a GARDENA Water Control to automate the irrigation using the micro-drip kits.

HARVEST RAINWATER

Collecting rainwater is a natural and sustainable way to irrigate your garden. Installing a rain barrel under your gutter downspouts can capture runoff from roofs, which can be used to water plants during dry spells. Rainwater is free from the salts and chemicals found in tap water, making it healthier for your plants. The Gardena Rainwater Pump will transport water from the barrel to any watering device whether you require water in your garden or home.

PRACTISE DEEP, INFREQUENT WATERING

Instead of watering lightly and frequently, practise deep, infrequent watering to encourage plants to develop deeper root systems. Plants with deep roots are better equipped to access moisture stored deeper in the soil and are more drought-resistant. A good rule of thumb is to water until the soil is moist about 15cm deep and then wait until the top 5cm of soil is dry before watering again. For this type of watering, we recommend using the Gardena water computer with Bluetooth function.Control your irrigation from the comfort of your couch using the Gardena App. Life could not be easier.

RECYCLE HOUSEHOLD WATER

You can further reduce water waste by recycling household greywater for your garden. This includes water from washing dishes, rinsing fruits and vegetables, or even shower water (as long as it’s free from harmful chemicals). Greywater can be used to irrigate nonedible plants, reducing the demand for fresh water. We recommend using the Gardena Clear or Dirty Water pump to transport greywater to your garden.

MAINTAIN YOUR GARDEN TOOLS AND IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Regular maintenance of your garden tools and irrigation system is crucial for minimising water waste. Check hoses, sprinklers and drip lines for leaks or clogs and fix any issues promptly. Even a small leak can waste a significant amount of water over time. Also, ensure sprinklers are positioned correctly to avoid watering driveways, sidewalks or other nonplant areas. The Gardena combisystem Tool Flex can assist by keeping all your tools tidy and ready for use.

Water-saving practices in the garden not only contribute to environmental sustainability, but can also save you money on water bills. By selecting drought-tolerant plants, watering wisely and using tools like drip irrigation and rain barrels you can enjoy a vibrant, water-efficient garden that thrives in harmony with nature. Start implementing these strategies today, and watch your garden flourish with less water and effort.

DID YOU KNOW?

The cleverly designed Soil Moisture Sensor by Gardena can significantly reduce water wastage. The sensor measures the actual moisture level in the soil and ill ontrol the ater timers by atering only hen ne essary.

This also removes the guesswork on whether the ground has sufficient water for your plants. When the Soil Moisture Sensor is installed together with the Gardena Water Control, it switches the water timer off if there is sufficient water in the soil. This is particularly important as we face water restrictions in certain areas.

FROM BLAND TO grand

The experts at Builders show us just how easy it is to get creative with wallpaper and lasers

Lasers may sound like science fiction, but they’re a reality in the tool world. We used the Bosch Laser Distance Measurer and the Bosch Cross-Line Laser to make this wallpapering job a cinch.

Sometimes there’s a room at home that just seems to be missing something and often a pop of colour or texture on a wall is all that’s needed to turn bland into grand.

HERE’S HOW:

Step 1

Using the right tools makes DIY easy. For this project, a Bosch GLM 20 Laser Distance Measurer was used to measure the wall. Knowing the length and width of the wall is crucial for both the wallpapering and the wooden trim. Measure the wall in question. The Bosch GLM 20 Laser Distance Measurer sends out a beam that reflects off the opposite wall and gives you an accurate measurement. In the room we were working on, the wall was 2.250m wide – this will be the length of the wood trim used to create a border between the wallpaper and the painted surface.

Step 2

Cut the wood trim to length (2.250m) and paint it. We used a dark grey finish –remember to use an undercoat and then at least two topcoats. Wait for each coat to dry before applying the next one.

Step 3

Back to the laser measurer – measure the height of the wall (2.6m). We want to install the wood trim halfway up the wall, which would be 1.3m. Use the laser measurer again, sliding it down the wall until it reads 1.3m and make a mark.

Step 4

We’re now going to use the Bosch Quigo Cross-Line Laser – a self-levelling spirit level, which is so much easier to use than a traditional spirit level. It projects two lasers onto the wall, one horizontal and one vertical, providing an accurate guide with which to work. Use this and a pencil to make a line across the wall at the 1.3m mark.

Step 5

When applying wallpaper, wall preparation is key. The surface should be smooth with no cracks. If there are cracks, fill them with crack filler, let it dry and sand it. For rough finishes or glossy paint, a universal primer helps with better wallpaper adhesion. If your wall doesn’t need a primer, give it a light scrub with sugar soap and lukewarm water to remove dirt, dust and residue, then wipe it with clean water and a rag.

Step 6

Calculate the amount of wallpaper you need. We know the size of the wall we’re doing – 2.250m wide and 1.3m high. To determine how many drops of wallpaper are required, the wall width (2.250m) was divided by the wallpaper width (530mm), resulting in five drops when rounded off. The number of drops (five) multiplied by the height of the area to be covered (1.3m) gave a total of 6.50m. That means one 10m roll is enough for our wall.

Step 7

Lie the wallpaper out on a clean, flat surface. We made sure the edge was up against the wall and then used the laser measurer to indicate 1.3m before drawing a line with a pencil. Place a scrap piece of wood underneath the wallpaper and cut it with a utility knife. Repeat until all the drops are cut.

Step 8

Time to install the wallpaper – this is where the Bosch Cross-Line Laser really was invaluable. The laser was set to the mark on the wall where the wallpaper would end and the wood trim would be installed. The vertical line was positioned 530mm from the edge, guiding the edge of the first drop of wallpaper. This can be done with a normal spirit level and tape measure.

Mix the wallpaper adhesive as per the instructions. Using a paintbrush, apply the adhesive to the wall evenly. Start at the top left corner of the wall, making sure the edge of the wallpaper is aligned with the wall or laser line, gently press the wallpaper onto the wall, smoothing it out with a squeegee or soft sponge to remove bubbles and wrinkles. Clean up any excess adhesive with a damp rag before it dries. Repeat for the rest of the drops. To ensure the wallpaper remains straight, move the cross-laser level 530mm to the right as each drop is applied.

Step 11

Step 10

Once the wallpaper is installed and smoothed out, trim any overhanging edges on the sides, top and around any light switches with a utility knife.

Install the wood trim so that it just covers the bottom edge of the wallpaper. Apply No More Nails adhesive to the piece of wooden trim in a zig-zag pattern, press it into place and hold until the glue sets. This trim will not only add a decorative touch, but will also hide the cut ends of the wallpaper.

And that’s it – another impactful DIY project done in a few hours. While a traditional tape measure and spirit level will get the job done, we were amazed at how much easier it was using these incredible Bosch laser tools. They are available from Builders, both in-store and online at builders.co.za, as are a selection of wallpapers and all the tools and supplies you need for this project.

Step 9

THE DIY dilemma

While a DIY project can bring a sense of accomplishment, certain home

There’s no denying that DIY can be rewarding. If you’ve ever successfully installed a new light fixture or repainted a room, you’ll know the thrill of admiring your handiwork. You’ve saved money, learned a new skill and earned some serious bragging rights.

HERE’S

WHEN AND WHY DIY CAN BE YOUR BEST BET

1.Small, nontechnical jobs

Tasks like painting, gardening or changing light bulbs are safe to handle yourself and can be great for weekend warriors. These don’t require specialised knowledge; only some patience and maybe a YouTube tutorial here and there.

2.The personal touch

DIY can add a personal, creative flair to your space. Want to build a quirky bookshelf? It’s the type of project that lets you flex your inner artist while adding unique charm to your home.

3.Cost saving (sometimes …)

DIY is often seen as a cheaper alternative

– and, in some cases, it is. But you need to factor in the cost of materials, tools and time. Sometimes, what you save in labour costs ends up being spent elsewhere. Plus,

if you make a mistake, the redo can cost more than if you’d just hired someone who knows what they’re doing (and is qualified to do it) in the first place.

THE PITFALLS OF DIY (WHEN IT DOESN’T QUITE WORK)

What starts as a simple task ends up requiring several trips to the hardware store, watching endless YouTube videos, and experiencing “Oh no” moments when you realise you’ve bitten off more than you can chew. DIY fails aren’t just about wasted weekends; they can cost you financially, too.

1.Complex projects = costly mistakes

Sure, you could try tiling your bathroom yourself, but get one measurement wrong and you’ll be staring at a crooked floor for the next five years – or worse, having to pay a professional to fix it.

2.Time drain

If you’re DIY-ing something that’s out of your depth, expect it to take far longer

GET AN EXPERT

than anticipated. You could be stuck working on that deck all summer instead of enjoying it. And do you really have the time (and energy) to fix the leaky tap at 10pm on a Sunday?

3.Safety first

Some jobs – electrical work, plumbing or anything that involves heavy machinery – come with risks. If something goes wrong, you could face serious injury or expensive damages, possibly impacting your household insurance cover. These are situations where it’s just not worth rolling the dice.

ENTER THE PROFESSIONALS: WHEN IT’S TIME TO CALL IN THE EXPERTS

The beauty of hiring professionals is that they do this for a living. They have the experience, the know-how and the right tools to get the job done efficiently and correctly. Here’s why bringing in an expert can often be the smarter choice:

1.Expertise you can trust

A professional knows what they’re doing. They have the training, experience and equipment that make them far better equipped to handle home maintenance tasks and renovations than the average weekend warrior. You’re not just paying for labour; you’re paying for peace of mind.

2.Long-term savings

While it may seem like hiring a pro costs more upfront, it can save you money in the long run. Quality work lasts – plus, if you mess up a DIY project, you’ll have to pay someone to fix it anyway.

3.Speed and efficiency

Pros generally do in a day what would take you a week. They have systems, teams and tools that help them complete tasks efficiently. Imagine reclaiming your weekends instead of being stuck with a half-finished home improvement project … yup, you know the answer here.
