MAKE EVERY DAY a ‘do day’
Leading hardware and DIY retailer Builders conducted a poll to discover which DIY projects customers are most likely to delay doing
Katherine Madley, vice president of group marketing at Builders, says: “The poll revealed some interesting insights into what people think of when procrastinating about a DIY project. Larger renovations or makeovers topped the list, but customers could consider tackling smaller eye-sore spots around the house first. At Builders, we want to help customers complete even the smallest of DIY projects and encourage them to turn procrastination into productivity.”
The top 10 DIY procrastination projects:
1. Bathroom makeover.
2. Kitchen renovation.
3. Painting the house.
4. Home office setup.
5. Garden landscaping.
6. Creating a patio area
7. Updating lighting fixtures.
8. Installing a new floor.
9. Organising the garage.
10. Building a deck.
The poll further revealed that 36% of respondents procrastinate on their DIY tasks for one to three months, stating one of the reasons for procrastinating as being they are often scared to take on these DIY activities. Madley advises: “Recognise that every DIY project is a learning experience and start with the small tasks around the house such as fixing door handles, changing globes, painting the stoep or hanging favourite photos. Conquering procrastination is not a one-day event, it is about cultivating habits that transform how you approach tasks in your daily life.”
THREE STEPS TO FIGHT PROCRASTINATION
Madley advises that to get the DIY journey started, DIYers should follow these three steps.
1. Start small, dream big. Don’t let the scale of a project overwhelm you. Break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. Want to renovate your kitchen? Begin by simply cleaning out a single drawer or cabinet. Small wins build momentum and motivation.
2. Buddy up. Invite a family member or friend to join you in your DIY endeavour. Not only will you have company, but you’ll also have built-in accountability to keep you on track.
3. Reward yourself. Set up a reward system for completing tasks. Finished changing out the light bulbs or sorting out that garden bed? Treat yourself to a braai with friends or your favourite takeaway. Positive reinforcement can work wonders for motivation.
“The ethos of Builders is that every day is a ‘Do Day’ and is aimed at encouraging all South Africans to stop putting off their DIY tasks,” says Madley.
CREATIVE WAYS TO REPURPOSE LEFTOVER RENOVATION MATERIALS
Orlando Luis E o ri hts ard are an inde endent hard are retail chain o ers some cle er and creati e ideas or re ur osin these materials addin a ersonal touch to our home hile ein en ironmentall conscious
More and more South Africans are embracing DIY and rolling up their sleeves to tackle home upgrades and renovations. However, renovation projects often leave behind a variety of unused materials such as paint, tiles, lumber and cement.
Instead of discarding these leftovers or leaving them in your garage gathering dust and getting in the way, why not transform them into something useful and beautiful?
LEFTOVER PAINT
Paint can be used to refresh and revitalise your space with minimal effort. Here are a few ideas:
• Accent walls and furniture: use leftover paint to create striking accent walls in your home. A pop of colour on one wall can transform a room’s ambience. Additionally, you can repaint old furniture – whether a chair, table or bookshelf – to give it a new lease on life.
LEFTOVER TILES
Tiles can be incredibly versatile when it comes to DIY projects. Consider these ideas:
• Mosaic art: create stunning mosaic art pieces for garden paths, tabletops or even wall art.
• DIY artwork: turn your extra paint into unique pieces of art. Abstract designs on canvas, geometric patterns on wood or stencilled art on walls can add personality to any room.
• Planters and pots: brighten up your garden or indoor plants by painting your old pots and planters. This can also give a new lease of life to tired and weather-worn pots.
• Decorative trays and frames: upcycle old trays and picture frames by painting them to match your decor. This is a simple way to create customised home accessories.
• Murals: use leftover paint to create murals on walls or fences. This can be a fun family project and adds a unique artistic element to your home.
The different colours and textures of leftover tiles can make for beautiful designs.
• Coasters and trivets: smaller tiles can be transformed into coasters and trivets. Simply add felt or cork to the back to protect your surfaces.
• Backsplashes and borders: use leftover tiles to create backsplashes in kitchens or bathrooms or add decorative borders around existing tiled areas for a refreshed look.
•Plant stands: cover the tops of small tables or stools with tiles to make unique plant stands.
• Outdoor stepping stones: embed tiles into cement to create colourful stepping stones for your garden.
LEFTOVER LUMBER
Leftover lumber and wood offcuts are perfect for crafting and building projects. Here are some ways to repurpose it:
• Shelves and storage: build custom shelves or storage solutions for your home or garage. This can help organise your space while adding a personal touch.
• Picture frames: craft unique picture frames using leftover wood. These can be stained, painted or left natural.
• Furniture: create small pieces of furniture such as stools, benches or side tables. Handmade furniture adds character and charm to any space.
• Garden beds: construct raised garden beds or compost bins. This is a practical use of leftover lumber that benefits your garden.
• Birdhouses and feeders: make birdhouses or feeders to attract wildlife to your yard. This is a fun project that can involve the whole family.
LEFTOVER CEMENT
Cement is a versatile material that can be used in various DIY projects. Here are some easy ideas:
• Stepping stones: make personalised stepping stones by pouring cement into moulds and adding decorations such as stones, tiles or imprints (children’s hands and/or feet make wonderful stepping stone imprints).
• Planters: mould cement into unique shapes to create sturdy planters for your garden or indoor plants.
• Garden sculptures: craft simple garden sculptures or ornaments. These can add a whimsical touch to your outdoor space.
COMBINED MATERIALS PROJECTS
For a more elaborate project, consider combining different materials:
• Garden pathways: use a combination of tiles and cement to create decorative garden pathways.
• Custom furniture: combine lumber and tiles to create unique furniture pieces, for example, a tiled-top side table for the patio.
• Decorative panels: use leftover paint, tiles and lumber to create decorative wall panels or a headboard that will make a statement in any room.
• Outdoor fire pit: build an outdoor fire pit using leftover cement and tiles for a stylish and practical gathering spot.
Repurposing leftover renovation materials not only reduces waste, but also enables you and your family to add personalised and unique touches to your home. Whether making practical items or decorative pieces, these projects can help you make the most of what you have and create something beautiful.

PAINT CONSIDERATIONS FOR MZANSI’S WEATHER CONDITIONS
Herman Rabe, technical training manager at Prominent Paints, shares key considerations to uide our aint choices s eci c to South rican eather conditions
South Africa’s diverse and challenging weather conditions, ranging from intense sun and UV radiation to arid deserts and humid coastal regions, pose unique challenges for selecting the right paint. Ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal requires careful consideration of factors such as temperature fluctuations, humidity, UV radiation and seasonal rainfall
1
2 UV radiation and colour fading
Due to its latitude, topography and cloudless skies, South Africa experiences high levels of UV radiation, particularly in regions such as the Highveld and the Northern Cape. This intense sunlight can cause paint colours to fade prematurely.
To prevent this, opt for UV-resistant paints designed to withstand prolonged sun exposure. Light-reflective colours and formulations with added UV inhibitors can significantly extend the life of exterior paint.
Temperature fluctuations
The country’s temperature extremes, from the scorching summers of the Karoo to the chilly winters of the Drakensberg, necessitate paints that can endure thermal expansion and contraction without cracking or peeling. Acrylic paints are particularly suitable due to their flexibility and resilience to temperature changes. For areas experiencing extreme cold, latex-based paints provide good elasticity and adhesion.
3
Humidity and moisture resistance
Coastal regions, such as Durban and Cape Town, are characterised by high humidity
4 5
levels and salty air, which can accelerate paint degradation and promote mould growth. For these areas, choose paints with antimildew properties and high resistance to moisture. Elastomeric paints are ideal for coastal climates, offering a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture penetration. When painting in cold or moist conditions, remember paint dries faster in dry air, so steer clear of humid days. Apply paint coatings in winter months between 10am and 3pm to allow the paint film to dry enough to prevent defects such as surfactant leaching or scum formation when exposed to dew formation too soon after application. Never paint when the day temperature is below 16°C. The surface being painted must be at least 3°C above the dew point.
Rain and water resistance
South Africa’s summer rainfall regions, such as the eastern parts of the country, require paints that can withstand heavy downpours. Waterproofing properties are crucial to prevent water damage and peeling. Elastomeric and high-quality latex paints are excellent choices due to their superior water resistance and ability to maintain integrity under wet conditions. Wind and sand abrasion
In windy and sandy regions, such as the Western Cape and parts of the Northern Cape, abrasive particles carried by the wind can erode paint surfaces. Opt for durable, high-quality paints with a strong binding agent to withstand such wear. Textured finishes can help mask minor abrasions and maintain a fresh
6
appearance longer. However, textured paints generally have high dirt retention. A high-sheen Neuklad coating with a thick film build and bridging ability, along with added antibacterial properties, can withstand such conditions.
Environmental considerations
South Africa’s commitment to environmental sustainability encourages the use of low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints. These eco-friendly options reduce air pollution and are safer for both the environment and human health. Consider paints certified by recognised environmental standards to ensure you are making a responsible choice.
7
Preparation and application
Proper surface preparation is essential regardless of the weather conditions. Clean, dry and primed surfaces ensure better paint adhesion and longevity. In regions prone to heavy dew or high humidity, plan painting projects during drier seasons to avoid trapping moisture under the paint.
Selecting the right paint for South African weather conditions requires an understanding of the local climate and its impact on building exteriors. By choosing UV-resistant, flexible, moisture-resistant and durable paints, you can ensure your property remains aesthetically pleasing and structurally protected against the diverse and often harsh South African elements. Prioritise high-quality products and proper application techniques to maximise the lifespan and performance of your paintwork
TRANQUIL Haven
Yael Geffen E o e e en Sothe s nternational Realt rites that creatin a tranquil home is much sim ler than ou thin
In today’s fast-paced world where constant engagement and the expectation of 24/7 productivity have become the norm, it’s more important than ever for thehometo be a true sanctuary; a place where we can escape the stresses of daily life, recharge and connect with our loved ones.
Creating acalmand peaceful environment for your family is crucial for both mental and physical wellbeing. Acalmhomehas multiple benefits: reduced stress, lesser anxiety and improved focus and sleep. As a result, communication is improved, relationships are strengthened, productivity increases and overall happiness is attainable.
Children, in particular, thrive in environments that promote tranquillity as the calm helps them manage their emotions, perform better academically and develop healthy coping mechanisms. But, ultimately, when every member of the family feels at ease in theirhome, it strengthens family bonds and promotes a sense of security.
Creating a tranquilhomeis much simpler than you think. These practical tips cost nothing more than time and effort:
1DECLUTTER TO CREATE SPACE AND ORDER
Clutter is often one of the biggest contributors to stress in thehome. Studies have shown that disorganised and cluttered spaces can lead to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety.
A clutter-free home not only looks more inviting, but also provides mental clarity, helping you and your family relax more easily.
The first step to a calmhome environment is decluttering each room and removing items that no longer serve a purpose or add value to your life. Begin with one space at a time, working through areas, such as closets, drawers and countertops, and consider donating, selling, or recycling items that are rarely used.
Adopt a “less is more” philosophy. Be intentional with the items you keep, focusing on functionality and sentimental value.
2
USECALMING COLOURS AND NATURAL LIGHT
The colours in your home can have a significant impact on the mood and atmosphere. Soft, muted tones, such as light blues, greens and beige, can promotecalmness, while bright or bold hues can stimulate energy and excitement. For living spaces, bedrooms and common areas, choose soothing colours that encourage relaxation.
Natural light also plays a key role in creating a peaceful environment. Allow as much sunlight as possible to enter yourhome as exposure to natural light boosts mood, energy levels and sleep quality. If privacy or weather conditions limit natural light, use soft, warm lighting throughout thehouse. Consider adding mirrors to reflect light and make rooms feel more open. Avoid harsh fluorescent lighting, instead opt for LED lights with adjustable settings to create a cosy, calming ambience in the evening.
3
INCORPORATE NATURE AND PLANTS
Bringing elements of nature indoors is an effective way to create acalming atmosphere. Research suggests that simply being around greenery helps reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of tranquillity.
Houseplants are especially good additions for creating a calming atmosphere as they can improve air quality, reduce stress and enhance wellbeing. Place plants in high-traffic areas, such as the living room or kitchen, to help everyone feel more connected to nature, even when indoors.
You can also use natural materials, for example, wood, stone and bamboo, in furniture, decorations or even wall finishes to create a grounding and serene environment.
4
CREATE DESIGNATED QUIET ZONES
In a busyhousehold, it can be helpful to establish designated quiet zones where family members can retreat when they need a moment of peace. Whether it’s a cosy reading nook, a meditation corner or a comfy spot on the porch, creating specific areas where family members can relax or practice mindfulness can significantly contribute to a calmhomeenvironment.
For children, having a quiet space can help them manage emotions and take a break when they feel overwhelmed. Adults can also benefit from a private corner to read, journal or simply sit in silence to destress after a long day.
Make these quiet zones as inviting as possible with soft cushions, blankets andcalming scents such as lavender or eucalyptus to enhance relaxation.
5
ASSESS YOUR SLEEPING ENVIRONMENT
Acalmsleeping environment is essential for a good night’s sleep and sufficient sleep is paramount for both mental and physical wellness. The number one rule is don’t bring your work into the bedroom. Equally important is eliminating distractions at bedtime. Ariana Huffington, author of TheSleepRevolution, recommends that you remove all devices from the bedroom at least 5 minutes before you plan to sleep and charge them outside the bedroom, although she strives for 30 minutes. Children and teens should also have a cut-off time, preferably handing in their devices for charging in another room.
Other ways to make your bedrooms more conducive to good sleep include investing in blackout curtains or blinds and setting up dimmer switches.
Creating acalmhomeenvironment is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about fostering a space where each family member feels relaxed, centred and at peace. With a little effort and intention, you can easily turn yourhomeinto a serene retreat for the entire family.
A HAVEN OF CONTEMPORARY SOUTH AFRICAN INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING
When planning their home in Onrus in late 2023, the McArthur family envisioned a blissful and comfortable haven: a space that would reflect the wild natural beauty of the rocky coastline in their interior design. Although project managed from start to finish by the McArthurs, the double-storey home was designed by independent designer, civil engineer and building detailer Joel Coller, and Hermanus Building Contractors were in charge of construction. Italtile Somerset West was thrilled to be involved from the ground up, with consultant Cindy Field as lead advisor, overseeing the selection of all products used in the spec. This involved curating the finishes for all interior and exterior spaces with attention to bathroomware, kitchen sinks and all tiles, mosaics and cladding.
To amplify the sense of a private sanctuary, all the bathrooms were transformed into cocoons of sophisticated comfort, featuring the classic, delicately veined marbling of Statuario Valgi, a large-format glazed porcelain tile. One of the baths selected is Italtile’s exclusive Athena, a jetted spa-style bath – a perfect example of eco-luxe style. Laufen Pro sanware was selected for its high design, durability and water-saving qualities. Field finessed each bathroom with another Italtile exclusive – the energy-efficient Jeeves Sienna heated towel rail. Dominus Finesse bathroom accessories added the perfect finishing touch with its unique Bauhaus-style tubular steel aesthetic.
There’s a wonderfully tactile quality to Field’s choice of mixed stone tones throughout House McArthur: Natural Stone Cladding is a textural connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, used to edge planting beds as well as create accent walls inside. InOut Kronos Grey, a locally manufactured slip-resistant EcoTec tile, brings its sleek, subtly flecked velvety finish to the serene outdoor entertainment and pool areas.
House McArthur was completed and ready for the family to move in during March 2024 and is a beautiful example of Contemporary South African indoor-outdoor living. Not only is the sleek, elevated aesthetic designed to outlast the trends with timeless sustainable style, but all Italtile finishes used are designed with longevity in mind to hold their value as investment pieces and increase the McArthur family’s return on investment when the time comes to sell.
Being involved from the ground up, as the home took shape, was a great privilege for Italtile Somerset West. While Italtile has extensive experience in both residential and commercial projects, each project offers new challenges and an opportunity to create unique spaces that reflect personal style and enhance the everyday experiences of our customers.

Mid-century versus MODERN STYLING
Everything you need to know about Mid-century Modern style, with a guide to creating your own Mid-century Modern home. By ITALTILE
Mid-century Modern is modern, but it’s not the same as Modern style. Before we climb into the delights of the Mid-century Modern style, let’s make the distinction between this trending look (which has been having many happy returns since the ‘70s) and Modern style.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?
Perhaps the best way to separate the two is by saying Mid-century Modern is Modern’s incredibly cool little sister. Modern style is the overarching term encompassing many different styles, including Contemporary, Minimalist,
Scandinavian and Mid-century Modern. The Modern Movement was a reaction to the overly embellished opulence and heaviness of the 1800s and found beauty in simplicity, clarity of line, purity and functionality. Mid-century design kicked off from its Modern launchpad and revolutionised how we shape our work, home and play spaces.
The Modern aesthetic incorporates cues from Mid-century Modern design, and vice versa, so finding your way through the distinctions can be confusing. We’re here to help you rock the once-again-on-trend Mid-century Modern look. Get the basics right and it’s relatively simple to emulate at home.
Modern style favours extreme functionality and rejects decorative items and unnecessary colour. Mid-century Modern also favours no-fuss function over form but adds a quirky twist, incorporating eye-catching decorative accents, a retro taste in furnishings, organic shapes and sassy pops of bright colour – what the experts call saturated colour. There is order and discipline in the Modern style. There is humour and charisma in the Mid-century Modern style. Personal preference will help you decide which side you’ll gravitate towards.
THE BIRTH OF MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE
Mid-century Modern design demarcates the architectural and artistic era between the 1930s and 1960s and was one of the influences that gave its weight to the rigorous aesthetic cleanse after the ornate 1800s. Initially, after WW1 there was a real need for practical, pared-down affordability. Functional everything. The seedlings of the Modern Movement were germinating.
After WW2, it was full steam ahead in the world of technology, which had its foot on the gas, revving up to help reshape a post-war world. Printing processes were offering a wider colour palette, new materials were being invented with the development of low-maintenance materials: faux fur, polyester, nylon, melamine and other laminates. It was an inspirational time for designers. There was ‘50s-era optimism, ‘60s-era earthiness and ‘70s-era Scandi simplicity – all are wrapped up in today’s vibey Mid-century Modern package.
ORIGINAL MID-CENTURY MODERN DESIGN CUES
Houses were built with flat, low roofs, large rectangular windows and open plan, uni-space living (thanks to an architect called Frank Lloyd Wright), with man-made materials and interesting textures, featuring slim-legged, elongated and geometric furniture. Wood panelling was also extremely popular, on walls and ceilings. (Cut to the 21st century, and behold, the ceiling has entered the design conversation once again, embellished, wallpapered or wood-panelled). The open-plan flow of kitchen, dining and living areas we know today, which makes contemporary compact living so approachable and social, owes its existence to Mid-century Modern style.
MIXED METALS ARE KEY PLAYERS
MID-CENTURY MODERN TEXTURES AND MATERIALS
Materials as diverse as rubber, plastic, pleather, glass and faux fur entered the game, rubbing shoulders with raw wood, wool and other hand-worked textiles, alongside natural leather, bamboo and rattan (the bohemian and rustic influence). Retro and vintage man-made elements are an essential part of today’s Mid-century Modern look. Floors often featured high-gloss vinyl or hardwood in oak or walnut tones. Today, hi-tech vinyl flooring options are killing it, bringing those wood tones home in a sustainable way.
Brass and copper for warmth, chrome for bright shine and black metal finishes for drama all feature in the Mid-century Modern aesthetic. Back in the day, indoor nature with built-in plantings was highly favoured. And still is ... with many younger homeowners choosing a proliferation of plants to care for over a traditional family. So go full foliage with your indoor plantings and you’ll be bang on trend. Intriguing lighting solutions, big windows and mirrors play their part, too.

Here, we’re looking at graphic patterns with geometric and atomic influences. Symmetrical with asymmetrical and abstract shapes. Both the mathematical and the organic cast their spells together.
MAKE SPACE
Mid-century Modern spaces look and feel more lived-in than the more ascetic Modernist home. But beware of the decorating frenzy. Keep floor spaces open, make seating areas comfy and find smart ways to show off your personality (abstract artwork, bold lighting) without adding clutter.

We’re excited to help you create the ideal Mid-Century Modern canvas on which to express your bold retro ideas, whether jazzy colour mixing and graphic patterns in your soft furnishings or a blend of simple geometric and organic shapes, forms and textures in surfaces, lighting and furniture.
COLOUR
Colour pops in the Mid-century Modern space but it’s not random. The Mid-century Modern colour palette is built on three main categories: neutral foundations, earthy tones in layers and bright primaries as accents. Against a neutral backdrop of concrete and mid-tone wood, accompanied by white, grey and cream, you’ll find companionable olive and dark greens, all the browns, mustard yellows and ochres, oranges and then – alakazam! – a signature spike of vibrant colour. Easy on the red, though, just a soupçon will work its magic, otherwise you’ll be driven mad by the tonal equivalent of an ambulance driving through your room. The same goes for sunny yellow: you’ll want your space to be touched by the sun, not struck by lightning. Those power colours are your accents and, if wisely used, will create striking and playful contrasts against a neutral and earthy backdrop.

Creating a PEBBLE ART MASTERPIECE
E er arden has areas that des ite our est e orts remain under helmin hese could e a arren atch o rass or a li eless atch o concrete ut hate er the are the call out or somethin more li e a eauti ul iece o e le art BUILDERS
Lay two bricks in one corner and make sure they are at the level you need. If you are going to fill around them with gravel later, make sure the bricks are higher than the ground to accommodate this. Now lay two bricks at the opposite corner and check the level with a spirit level. Adjust the fishing line to the correct level and use it as a guide to finish laying the bricks. Leave the concrete to dry overnight.
Step 6
Let’s get creative with our pebbles! Mix sand and cement in the same three-to-one ratio but don’t add water yet. Put this dry mix into the square as a base for the pebbles. Try a few pebbles and adjust the depth of the dry concrete mix to get the top of the pebbles level with the brickwork. When you’re happy, move on to laying the pebbles.
Step 7
In our example, we have made a square frame of bricks and then used pebbles for the design inside the frame, but these steps can be replicated to make any shape and design to work in your situation.
HOW TO CREATE THE PEBBLE INLAY PAVING PROJECT
Step 1
First, prepare the spot you’re going to use for your art. Clear the area and mark out the workspace. If you’re going to make a square or rectangle, here’s a tip: once you’ve marked it out, check that the diagonal lengths from corner to corner are equal.
Once the area is marked out, dig out the area where the bricks will be placed to twice the depth of the bricks. This gives you space to make a firm concrete base for them while ensuring the final level will match the surroundings. The area where the pebbles will go doesn’t need to be as deep. When digging out the soil, do it carefully and shave the soil away to keep it level, rather than digging a lot of holes.
Step 3
Once everything is level and clear, use fishing line between four corner pegs to guarantee straight lines for the perimeter of your design.
Step 4
Time to mix some concrete! Use a ratio of three parts sand to one part cement and mix dry until well combined. Then add a little water at a time and mix, aiming for a thick yoghurt consistency.
Create your pattern. We worked in a circular pattern from the inside out, but there’s no limit to what you can create in this way. Make sure the pebbles are firmly set into the dry mix – once you’re finished, use a fine spray to give the pebbles and concrete a light watering to activate the concrete.
Step 8
To fill the gaps between the pebbles and ensure everything is held firmly, make a slurry mix. To do this, add cement to water until you have a fluid consistency that will flow between the pebbles, filling every crevice.
After allowing the slurry to set slightly, clean the pebbles with a gentle spray of water and a sponge, revealing the beauty of your inlaid pebble artwork.
Upgrading your POOL LIGHTS TO LED
The actual process of upgrading your pool lights is surprisingly straightforward. Start by removing the old light fixture by twisting and pulling it out. You’ll notice the cable is joined by a simple chocolate block – simply undo the screws in it and remove the old light fitting.
A LED light in the pool can give a whole new premium feel at night, and it’s easy to install, too. By BUILDERS
So, you’ve just moved into your new house with that enticing pool you’ve always dreamed of having. Your kids are thrilled, and you’ve maintained the crystal-clear water diligently, thanks to some help from Builders. Everything seems perfect until the sun sets and you realise your pool light is not making your pool glow (as it does in the pictures you’ve seen). Even worse – your pool light has blown a bulb and the pool is as dark as the night sky. It’s a real buzzkill and can be a safety hazard, especially if your pool isn’t fenced in.
But don’t worry; there’s a bright solution to this problem. Upgrading your pool light to an LED option can be a game-changer, reducing electricity costs and providing much better illumination. The old-fashioned sealed lights emit a yellowish, outdated light. Now, compare that to LED lights, which shine with a cleaner, crisper blue colour. The water in your pool acts like a magnifying glass for the light, making your pool appear bluer, cleaner and brighter.
So, let’s get technical for a moment. Those old, sealed bulbs consume a significant amount of power, ranging from 75W to 125W. But inside the power box is a transformer that reduces the electrical voltage from 240V to a harmless 12V AC, which is what pool lights run on. Don’t fret about electrical AC current and water; 12V AC won’t shock you. Nonetheless, it’s always good practice to turn off the power at the box before doing any work around the lights. LED lights, on the other hand, are incredibly energy-efficient, typically consuming just 6W and leading to lower electricity bills.
Now, it’s time to rewire your new LED light, which is the above process in reverse. Depending on your preference, you can replace the entire fitting into the housing or replace just the old bulb with an LED one. If your new LED light is similar in size to the casing embedded in the wall, it’s a straightforward swap. If you’re just swapping bulbs, it’s even easier.
Keep in mind that various brands and models of pool lights have been used over the years, resulting in different sizes of replacements. To ensure a perfect fit, take your old light with you when shopping for a replacement.
Some LED pool lights even offer colour-changing options, which you can cycle through by turning the light on and off rapidly. Plus, you can always opt for a solid blue light – the default setting when you switch the light on.
