Impactful design
Behavioural strategist and founder of Kim Williams Design Kim Williams shares her take on designing with purpose and meaning
Creating purposeful and meaningful design involves respecting spaces and the individuals who use them. It entails a deep understanding of the design’s intent, its objectives and how people will interact with it. Once clear goals are defined, the interior designer can establish the spatial flow, ensuring intentional functionality and engaging experiences within the space.
RESEARCH GOES A LONG WAY
Beginning with thorough research and analysis to understand the behaviour, needs, desires and preferences of the individual/s who will inhabit the space enables the interior designer to tailor the design to suit the client’s requirements. This approach allows designers to create environments that not only look aesthetically pleasing, but also foster a sense of comfort, usability and longevity.
COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION ARE KEY
Through collaboration and communication, interior designers can ensure the design aligns with the client’s vision while also meeting the practical needs of the space. The ultimate goal is to craft a design that not only meets the functional requirements, but also resonates with those who interact with the space on a deeper level, creating a harmonious and enriching experience.
SEAMLESS FUNCTIONALITY
This deep understanding of the individual’s needs and preferences allows the interior designer to create spaces that not only look beautiful, but also function seamlessly, enhancing the overall experience for those who will be using them. The final result must be
visually appealing and align with the intended vision and purpose of the space. These spaces become living experiences that resonate with and enrich the lives of those who inhabit them.
HOLISTIC DESIGN
It is also about careful selection of materials that will increase the lifespan of the design. By placing importance on user experience, engagement and sustainability, interior designers can transcend traditional design boundaries and create environments that truly resonate with those who use them. Through this collaborative and user-centred process, designers can bring spaces to life, turning them into vibrant and enriching experiences that leave a lasting impact on all who encounter them.
HANDS-ON IN AN EVER-EVOLVING INDUSTRY
Staying at the forefront of the ever-evolving interior design industry is crucial. Membership of a professional body like the Institute of Interior Design is invaluable. This vibrant community fosters collaboration, sparking fresh ideas and innovative solutions. Such collaboration redefines design boundaries within the African and Middle Eastern landscape, pushing industry standards and allowing interior designers to deliver exceptional design solutions to clients.

Carné Interiors
An interior design company that creates innovative design solutions using quality finishes, with an emphasis on attention to detail
CARIN VAN HEERDEN MANAGING DIRECTOR
Carné Interiors is a well-established, local and international residential and commercial company with ongoing exposure to contemporary and global trends. This benefits its clients, who receive expert advice, innovation, and relevant and worldclass service.
What inspires your design goals? I get inspired by each project, my clients and their trust, and also by being part of the amazing team of professionals I work with every day. In the dynamic realm of interior design, setting specific, measurable goals is not merely advantageous; it is imperative. Goals serve as the navigational tools of my business, steering every creative choice, client interaction and project execution.
What is your biggest source of inspiration? My biggest source of inspiration is crafting spaces that inspire and resonate. This is the blueprint to not only advancing my craft skills, but also becoming a trendsetter who shapes the way my clients experience their interiors and their exterior spaces.
What interior design trend are you currently loving? Mixing textures – deliberately blending textures throughout our projects. Combining plaster walls with wood floors, texturised wallpapers fabrics, etc. Contrasting colours – although a neutral palette is more in fashion at the moment, using a pop of contrasting colours makes all the difference. 3D renderings are a must as well. To achieve a balance between aesthetics and functionality is important; it’s daring – and I am enjoying this to the fullest.
What is your signature look or style that is immediately recognised? I would like to think that it is elegance and a nostalgic look and feel with a bright and uplifting representation of design, while simultaneously creating ease, comfort and practicality in homes, offices and retail spaces.
What is your favourite space in your home and why?
My favourite space at my home is the pavilion at my pool. It is a glass structure where I can spend creative time with myself as well as with my family and friends.

Dhershan Interior Designs
An experienced commercial and residential interior design company that aims to deliver creative design and top-quality furnishings and fittings
DHERSHAN NAIDOO CEO
As a specialist in turnkey projects, Dhershan Naidoo takes great pride in his ability to render creative and inspired designs and exceptional service. He has extensive interior design experience in the residential, commercial and hospitality industries.
What do you love about South African interior design? The diversity of its cultures that come together. This creates a unique interest. South African interior design is multifaceted. The design world has experienced trend after trend, but there remains a fascination with South Africa. We are a diverse nation with a wide array of tastes, yet we build harmony. South Africans are many things, but basic is not one of them. South African design is dynamic and innovative, with the best still to come.
What inspires your design goals? My inspiration varies; sometimes it can be drawn from the natural surroundings, architecture or art, at other times, it comes from the actual building or just getting a feeling of the client’s likes.
What is your signature look or style that is immediately recognised? Most clients say my signature look is masculine. I don’t use a lot of colour. I do, however, always use different textures, wood, stone and metal. For example, mixed metals and greenery –an indigenous tree in a metallic-look pot can instantly elevate and update a space, adding that wow factor.
What interior design trend are you currently loving?
Arches on walls, countertops and furniture with no sharp corners seem to be trending. Neutral colours like ivory, beige and stone are in instead of opting for greys. Accent colours, such as navy blue, sage, emerald green and terracotta, for striking pops of colour. Brass, marble and rattan are still on the rise when it comes to furniture. I love all of these.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Give it your 100% and be passionate – you will succeed!
What is your favourite space in your home and why? I would definitely say the garden, getting in touch with nature and away from the interior walls.

CATHRIN BOLT PRINCIPAL (MIDDLE)
Nowadays Interiors provides a full interior decorating and design service to the residential, hospitality and corporate sectors. As master interior decorators, the company also collaborates with architects, hospitality clients and other designers to bring its designs to life. Nowadays Interiors has offices in Johannesburg, Gauteng and Tzaneen, Limpopo.
What is your biggest source of inspiration? It has to be fabric – and lots of it! The patterns, textures, colours and designs of fabrics have the power to create something out of nothing. We often start a design based on a single fabric or wallpaper as the main catalyst for the whole project.
What do you love most about the interior design industry in South Africa? I love how the landscape is changing from focusing on individual designers to incorporating multiple skills and talents into collaborative projects. This not only takes the pressure off the
“lead designer or architect” (which gives them more mental energy to focus on the larger task at hand), but also ensures that every designer involved is performing at their peak and doing what they excel at.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? “Go where you are celebrated!”
What inspires your design goals? Our goal is to create beautiful, livable spaces that are largely inspired by the South African way of living: being outdoors, travelling, spending time with loved ones, resting and retreating. If we can hand over a space where people can really live, we have reached our goal.
What interior design trend are you currently loving?
The incorporation of personal details, especially travel-inspired furniture or art pieces and, of course, the elaborate maximum use of fabrics and wallpapers.
What’s your favourite space in your home and why? I love our bedroom. It was the first space we furnished when we got married. It is a safe place for us and our kids, a place to rest, pray and connect. One of my favourite features is its view over the trees in our garden.
