YOU'LL WANT TO TRUMPET ABOUT IT
Step into the wild side of luxury at Elephant Point Resort, where the boundaries of comfort and adventure blur. HENRY ISAACS shares his unforgettable experience in this haven of tranquillity and excitement
s a photographer, I've had the privilege of capturing the beauty of the African wilderness, but nothing could have prepared me for the luxurious safari escape Elephant Point Resort offers. I was lucky enough to call Lodge 23 my home for a few days, and this Moroccan-inspired villa was the perfect blend of exotic charm and modern comfort.
From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in for a treat. The resort's seamless blend of natural materials and modern elegance was a photographer's dream come true. The warm and welcoming staff made me feel like I was part of the pride and the check-in process was as ef cient as my camera's autofocus.
Top-class accommodation
My private villa at Lodge 23 was a tranquil retreat that felt like my own personal oasis in the wild. The Moroccan-inspired architecture added a touch of exotic air to the already stunning surroundings. The oor-to-ceiling windows let nature in, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding bush, and I found myself sneaking away to capture the golden light of dawn and dusk.
The decor was understated yet chic, with neutral tones complemented by vibrant African artwork and textiles. And let's not forget the outdoor area – a private deck and plunge pool perfect for cooling off during the heat of the day. I even managed to sneak in a few dawn photography sessions from the comfort of my deck!
But it was the vista that truly stole my heart. The resort's prime location on the banks of the Sabie River offers unparalleled views of the surrounding bush, and I found myself constantly drawn to the stunning vistas from my private deck. Whether sunrise over the river or maybe a dramatic thunderstorm rolling in, the views are simply breathtaking.

SNORKEL WITH A
Mike Barron, co-founder of Cape RADD , invites you to a unique snorkel experience. Join the marine biologists on a guided snorkel into kelp forests, and you’ll be making a valuable contribution to shark science at the same time
ape RADD is a marine conservation and research organisation whose mission is to build a community of passionate ocean scientists, conservationists and storytellers to explore, research, educate and ultimately protect our wild marine spaces. And we want you to join us.
Cape RADD is situated in Simon’s Town on the South Peninsula along the shores of False Bay in an area of spectacular beauty featuring stunning beaches, marine life and a mountainous backdrop. Just 40km from Cape Town’s city centre, False Bay is a well-known hot spot and one of the most diverse areas in the world for marine life. False Bay hosts an abundance of species, large and small, from colourful nudibranchs, octopus and sea urchins to humpback whales, dolphins and the playful Cape Fur seals, as well as magical kelp forests.
To support our mission, Cape RADD created a unique ecotourism experience to involve the public in exploring, learning and assisting scientists through our Citizen Science ‘Snorkel for Science’ tour. Through our snorkel experience, we highlight the beauty and importance of protecting our oceans and the threats to our marine environments, with particular focus on the endemic shy sharks of the kelp forests.
Contribute to marine conversation
Everyone can play a part in citizen science marine conservation by joining the Cape RADD snorkel experience with a difference! Guests join our team of marine biologists on a guided snorkel into the kelp forests and search for the elusive shy sharks, collecting photo ID data on the local species of False Bay. During your underwater
adventure, you will learn about the fascinating relationships between the marine organisms, how we track animals through the kelp forest, and how we are photographing the sharks’ patterns to use them to identify individual sharks so we can estimate how many sharks there are and help protect them.
Ultimately, guests contribute towards the bigger picture, gaining a better understanding of the marine ecosystems and protection of our oceans. Our experienced guides help you see all the wonderful marine life you might otherwise miss.
This adventure combines a fun wildlife experience with education, while directly contributing towards marine conservation through citizen-science-led data collection. Suitable for the whole family.
Scuba options are also available through our sister dive company, Impact Divers.

FANCY BUT
Where fine dining gets its hands deliciously dirty – welcome to Terrarium , where every bite is a wild, edible adventure
magine a world where ora and fauna collide on your plate in the most unexpected yet delightful ways. Enter Terrarium, chef Chris Erasmus’ latest culinary playground at the Queen Victoria Hotel. A plant-lover’s paradise meets a carnivore’s dream, all presented with an effortless air of sustainability. It’s a ne-dining terrarium where foraged ingredients, quirky cuts of meat and a whole lot of Cape Town cool come together in edible harmony.
Taking over the space previously held by Dash, Terrarium is not just a restaurant; it’s a full-blown experience. Picture yourself nibbling on delicate, immaculately plated morsels from either the Fauna (meaty decadence) or Flora (plantpowered bliss) menus, both of which scream “fancy but fun”. Chef Chris Erasmus – yes, that Chris of Franschhoek's famed Foliage – has transported his forest-to-fork ethos to the Waterfront without a whiff of pretension.
Think of it as an edible love letter to local farmers, shers, and foragers. Terrarium’s offerings are so fresh you might just catch a whiff of the forest oor. No prime cuts? No problem.
Unusual meats make for exciting bites, and don’t even get us started on the wine list, which has been thoughtfully curated by Newmark’s group sommelier, Marlvin Gwese.
Expect small-batch wines to complement your meal in ways that will make you wonder why you ever bothered with the usual suspects. Oh, and it’s not just about the food. There’s a serious art vibe here, too with local artists’ work adorning the walls and live folk and blues performances bringing a beat to your meal. Ever wanted to enjoy a post-modern jukebox with a side of sustainably sourced oysters? Well, now’s your chance.
From the movies: "You can never have too much butter."
–Julie&Julia (2009) In this movie, fine dining is represented through Julia Child's philosophy that food should be joyful, indulgent and prepared with love.
Footnote:
Fine dining refers to a high-end dining experience that emphasises exceptional service, sophisticated ambience and meticulously prepared, gourmet cuisine. Often featuring multicourse meals, fine dining restaurants offer a carefully curated menu showcasing premium ingredients, innovative techniques and expert wine pairings.
Verdict?
Whether you’re hotel-hopping or simply after a meal that feels like an event, Terrarium promises an experience that’s as lush and alive as its namesake. Chef Chris Erasmus' passion for organic, sustainable dining is unmistakable, but let’s be honest, it’s the joy of indulging in every bite that’s going to keep you coming back.

FOREST FORAGING AND
ucked away in the leafy southern suburbs, de Tafel at the Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa is ipping ne dining on its head — and we’re here for it. Picture this: sustainability, local avours and an eye for Cape Town’s natural bounty all wrapped up in one seriously stylish package. The recent revamp of the decor and the dishes makes this spot a contender for Cape Town’s next “it” dining destination.
Leading the charge is executive chef Gregory Henderson, a foraging fanatic with a passion for all things farm-to-table. This isn’t your average dining experience. Chef Henderson’s got decades of culinary wisdom and he’s using it to craft a menu that fuses the Cape’s wild ingredients with global techniques. The result? A distinctly South African ne-dining adventure that’s anything but boring.
Exploring epicurean delight where Cape flavours meet culinary artistry in an unforgettable fine dining experience
A tale of two tables
At Palm House, you’ve got
choices:
casual bites at the all-day Palm Terrace or a more re ned, dinner-only affair at de Tafel. While the Terrace offers feather-light omelette souf és and burgers so fancy they might as well have a passport, it’s de Tafel where things really get serious. Or, as serious as you can get while sipping cocktails next to a roaring re and wondering whether the Knysna river crab or sustainably caught kingklip will win your heart tonight.
A de Tafel after dark
But come evening, de Tafel is where the magic happens. The multicourse menus – crafted by Henderson, of course – are a seasonal affair and sustainability is always the star of the show. From marinated beetroot petals and Saldanha Bay oysters to nutmeg pelargonium scallops, Elgin apples with fennel fronds and Joostevlakte duck breast with peppered Buchu sides
Verdict?
or silver sh and seaweed candy to Fynbos honey panna cotta and a heuningboegoe crème glacé, each dish is a love letter to local avours and ocean-friendly dining. Vegans, don’t worry, Henderson’s got you covered with plant-based dishes that are just as delicious (and Instagram-worthy).
Bonus points for foraging and wellness
For the adventurous foodie, de Tafel also offers foraging excursions where you can hunt wild mushrooms and herbs before seeing them transformed into your dinner. Add a killer Cape wine list, curated by sommelier Richard Goza, and you’re in for an unforgettable culinary ride. Oh, and did we mention the on-site Açaí Spa? Because nothing says "treat yourself" like a spa day followed by lunch on the Terrace.
If you’re after a dining experience that mixes Cape-inspired fl avours, sustainability and a dash of culinary genius, de Tafel is your new go-to. Grab a reservation, bring your appetite and prepare for one seriously unforgettable meal. Oh, you should also consider booking a room at the Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa (read more on page 7).

MZANSI IS
South Africa’s braaing culture is more than just a cooking method; it's a cherished social tradition that brings friends and family together to enjoy Mzansi’s great outdoors
riginating from the traditional method of cooking over an open ame, braaing has evolved into a beloved culinary experience characterised by various types of meat, savoury marinades and side dishes. It's not uncommon for South Africans to gather around a re, sharing stories and laughter while grilling boerewors, chops and steaks.
If you're looking to experience an authentic shisanyama, the following stands out. GQ Gugulethu in, well, Gugulethu, Cape Town is a favourite among the locals for great shisanyama. You choose your meats, cuts and the guys at GQ do a great job of braaing your fare to perfection. Check them out at Dr Moerat St, Gugulethu, or call 076 216 1718.

Flavoured butter
• 125ml salted butter, softened
• 60ml at-leaf parsley (combine with soft herbs from your garden; fennel fronds, basil and coriander are delicious), roughly chopped
• zest of 1 lemon
• 1 generous dollop of sriracha or your favourite hot sauce
Method
1. Make the dry rub by pounding the whole spices and herbs together in a pestle and mortar. Add the paprika, sugar and salt and mix until combined but still retains some texture.
2. Rub the meat with the avoured salt on both sides and refrigerate, open, for about 1 hour. This allows the surface of the steak to dry.
3. To make the avoured butter, mix all the ingredients until well combined. If you like, add a bit more spice to taste. Garlic and onion powder are optional extras. Scrape all the avoured butter onto a sheet of baking paper (or clingwrap) and shape into a neat roll. Refrigerate until needed.
Serves 4
Pork T-bone steak with sriracha-fl avoured butter
Preparation: 25 minutes, plus 1 hour refrigeration
Cooking time: about 10 minutes
Ingredients
• 4 large pork T-bone steaks, rind removed
• a splash of olive oil
Dry rub
• 5ml coriander seeds
• 3ml fennel seeds
• 3ml whole peppercorns
• a sprig each thyme and rosemary, leaves stripped
• 1 bay leaf, broken into pieces
• 3ml smoked paprika
• 5ml light brown sugar
• 30ml Maldon sea salt
4. To prepare the steaks you will need hot coals. Make sure you light a generous re so you have enough heat to nish the job. Make sure to bring the steaks back to room temperature before cooking them.
5. Braai the steaks, turning every minute or so until a beautiful, seared crust forms (about 3–4 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of your steaks).
6. Remove from the heat and place a cast-iron pan on the grid to heat up. Add a generous dash of olive oil (this keeps the butter from burning) and then add a slice of avoured butter to the pan. Once melted, put the steaks into the butter and nish cooking, basting with the avoured butter. Allow to rest for another 3 minutes off the heat before serving with your favourite sides and an extra slice of avoured butter.
Cut: pork T-bone steaks
TIP: remember to sear the fat by standing the steaks upright over the coals or in the pan with the avoured butter to make sure it is nicely browned and crisp.

Apparently Ed Shereen likes his topped with slap chips and tomato sauce while some may favour banana or peanuts. Whatever your topping of choice, there can be no doubt that the humble pizza ain’t so humble anymore
What tops yours?
A YouGov survey from April 2023 shows that America’s favourite pizza topping is pepperoni with 24% naming it their top choice. Sausage follows at 13%, with extra cheese (11%), mushrooms (9%) and chicken (6%) rounding out the favourites. Anchovies, meanwhile, are the least loved, with 29% saying it’s a no-go.
In South Africa, popular toppings include salami, ham, mushrooms, pineapple, and, of course, the ever-present bacon, feta and avocado combination.

thin, crispy base. Capers and vegetables are not so popular. Rodrick Munyaradzi from Dino’s Trattoria in Sandton says salami is the bestseller, while artichokes don’t often make it to the plate. Enrico from Caraffa, also in Pretoria, mentions pork and avo as popular toppings while mushrooms are ordered less frequently.
Celebrity chef Jenny Morris, known as the Giggling Gourmet, prefers mushrooms, chilli and a drizzle of olive oil with a dusting of Parmesan on her pizzas. Bananas and cooked avocado, though, should be banned, she jokes. “Some people like bacon, banana and peanut butter on their pizzas – they must think they’re related to Elvis!” she laughs.

Chef Andile Magwaza favours creamy chicken, feta and avo while sardines are a no-no. Chef and author Aiden Pienaar always includes avo but dislikes courgettes, and Gareth Daniell, aka BraaiBoy, prefers cheese – and lots of it. He draws the line at seafood, though, preferring his prawns, oysters and cray sh straight off the braai. The beauty of pizza is its versatility. pizza, wine and company. Here are two local spots offering pizza beyond the ordinary: Oukraal, Potchefstroom
Overlooking the street life on the Bult, Oukraal serves freshly made pizzas from scratch. Manager Ruan Pansegrouw emphasises their focus on high-quality ingredients. One of their bestsellers is The South African, which features steak strips, boerewors, biltong, fried onions and cheese, topped with tangy chutney. Another hit is the Lover Boy, a combination of camembert, preserved gs, onions and biltong. It might sound unusual, but it’s a winner.
Pansegrouw is also an expert in pairing pizzas with wine. A classic Margherita, he says, goes well with a light Pinot Noir, while pepperoni pairs beautifully with a bold Syrah. A vegetarian pizza, brimming with fresh vegetables, matches best with a fuller-bodied white like a Chenin Blanc.
Nom Nom, Cape Town
At 166 Long Street, Nom Nom keeps things simple. Owner Olga Antoniceva says it’s all about the quality of the dough, which they make in-house daily. The pizzas improve as the oven heats up and the best slices might be served late at night – so much so that Nom Nom stays open until 4am.
Nom Nom’s pizzas have thin, crisp crusts with bacon and avo being the most popular option. Close runners-up are the Apollo (mushroom, chicken and avo) and staples like the Regina (ham and mushroom) or Tropical (ham and pineapple).
Antoniceva’s personal favourite is the straightforward Margherita, occasionally with mushrooms. Her partner adds pineapple and salami to his. As a small business, they keep an

eye on trends and their vegan pizzas, such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (red pepper, onion, chilli and garlic) or the Antipasti (mushrooms, olives and peppadews), are popular.
In the gourmet section, unique options abound, including the Honey Badger (pepperoni, bacon and hot honey), inspired by a customer who suggested the New York craze of adding hot honey to pizza. DID YOU KNOW?
So, what is gluten? It is a protein found in wheat and other grains. Gluten-free products essentially use grains but remove the gluten during production. In whiskey, which is typically made from malted and unmalted barley, water and yeast, the triple distillation process in Irish whiskey removes most, if not all, gluten from the grain, ensuring a gluten-free drink.
Le Chemin du Roi Champagne and Branson Cognac are available at leading retailers, including Makro and Norman Goodfellows nationwide.
A REMARKABLE
Our proximity to the sea is what lends such freshness and elegance to our layered Cabernet Sauvignon, writes VUSI DALICUBA , Vergenoegd Löw’s winemaker
Stellenbosch street soirées
Save the dates
ecently ranked as the runner-up at the inaugural 2024 Next Generation Awards, Vergenoegd Löw’s 2022 Lara Cabernet Sauvignon earned an impressive score of 95 points. This splendid vintage also clinched gold at the recent Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Competition, marking an outstanding achievement in its debut year on the estate.
Situated less than 5km from the False Bay coastline along Stellenbosch’s Helderberg Wine Route, this estate’s vines grow in calcareous soils that produce graceful, harmonious wines with good acidity.
At Vergenoegd Löw, the winemaking philosophy centres on the concept of “following the grapes”, allowing the unique character of the grapes to dictate the vini cation process. The 2022 vintage, aged for 18 months in a combination of new and older oak, presents a
concentrated palette of black and red fruit avours, accented by herbal notes and dark chocolate undertones. The tannins are "chalky" and notes a slight salinity due to the estate's coastal proximity. The wine’s versatility allows it to be paired perfectly with hearty dishes such as grilled steaks, lamb chops, casseroles, roasts, avourful vegetarian options and strong, mature cheeses.
Vergenoegd Löw’s sommelier, George Young, was recently named South Africa’s Best Young Sommelier of 2024.

HERE COMES THE BOMB
assie Erasmus’s bomb squad may be feared throughout the rugby-playing world, but the guys themselves are just nice, normal blokes (terrifyingly large and powerful blokes), many of whom like to unwind with a beer after a big match. Steven Kitshoff and Malcolm Marx have been bomb squad teammates and friends for a long time and turned their love of lager into a brewing enterprise. We asked Kitshoff about the inspiration behind Bomb Squad Lager.
“Malcolm and I always wanted to start a business together for after our rugby careers. Beer was something we were happy to put our name behind and give it a full go. It actually started as a passion project and turned into a full business of which we are proud.
“During the initial chats around developing the lager we were both on individual tours – me in Ireland with the Stormers and Malcolm in Japan. We had a clear idea of what we expected from the lager, what it should look and taste like based on our individual taste pro les. Ultimately, we wanted a very easy-
drinking beer with great avours. We put our trust in Adrian and Liam from Saggy Stone to develop a recipe and produce the rst batch. They met our expectations from the beginning.
“We know the industry has a lot of options when it comes to beers and craft beers. We wanted to ensure we nailed our can design so the product would stand out on the shelves.
“The response to the beer has been great and I truly believe the beer’s success will re ect the quality of our product. We had a big focus on getting our beer into the major retailers. Beer is a volume game and we needed to make sure it’s easily accessible.
“Looking forward, we just launched the brand in the United Kingdom and are very excited to work on and grow the business globally. We’re planning to launch new product lines as early as February 2025.”

YOUNG, FAMOUS AND
ANTHONY SHARPE sizes up four of the hottest young local talents blazing trails into 2025
Fans of the Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso will be familiar with the face of Jodi Balfour, who played the rather confusingly named Jack, the love interest of Juno Temple’s Keeley Jones in season three. They might not have known that the actress grew up in Cape Town. From her childhood, Balfour was drawn to dance, song and acting to express the vibrance of her inner life, which led her to study drama at UCT and compete in Miss South Africa 2008.
Since graduation, she’s graced small and silver screens, mainly in British and Canadian productions. Aside from Ted Lasso, her TV roles include Bomb Girls (which led to a Canadian Screen Award for Best Lead Actress in a Television Film or Miniseries), The Crown, True Detective and, most recently, the acclaimed science ction drama For All Mankind. She also starred opposite Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in the feature Freud’s Last Session. We’re sure that’s not the last we’ll see of Balfour on our screens, however.
This 22 year old has the rainbow nation rolled into his name and its hopes for further rugby glory resting on his shoulders. Having captained the Junior Springbok team, he circled the senior squad for two years before being handed his debut opportunity as a substitute for the Boks’ 41–13 walloping of Wales, to which Feinberg-Mngomezulu contributed two conversions and a penalty. He’s since impressed with his kicking and playmaking abilities at yhalf, along with a blistering turn of pace that has left many a defender wrong-footed.
There’s also the matter of that absolutely insane 61-metre penalty he so casually kicked against New Zealand. Sadly, in his determination to play the All Blacks, Feinberg-Mngomezulu hid a knee injury that could see him missing the rest of the 2024 season (that’s the ip side of being 22). It means he’ll have the trust of the team to regain and everything to prove come 2025.
This dancing sensation is just 24 years old, but she’s already played a role in the meteoric rise in popularity of amapiano, the South African music genre that blends deep house, jazz, lounge, soul and gqom. Mphela’s journey to stardom started young with a father who worked at YFM taking her to events where she got the opportunity to dance on stage and learn how to entertain a crowd, a skill that would prove useful years later when she dabbled as an MC.
It was her dance videos on social media that catapulted Mphela into the spotlight, however, so much so that she got a music deal with Major League Music in 2019 and released her debut EP, Twentee, a year later. It’s been more singles, collaborations, insane dance moves and performances at festivals around the world since then, with a stint as a brand ambassador for Samsung thrown in for good measure. With a new EP on the way, it’s fair to say she’ll be tinkling the amapiano ivories for some time to come.
This 25-year-old R&B powerhouse from Pretoria knows about charting her own course. Ndivhuwo Elaine Mukheli, who goes simply by Elaine, self-released her debut EP, Elements, at the tender age of 20. The album proceeded to become a certi ed Platinum seller in South Africa, was nominated for R&B Album of the Year at the 2020 South African Music Awards and became the rst album by an independent female artist to occupy the No 1 spot on both the iTunes and Apple Music charts simultaneously. Elaine was also the most streamed female artist in South Africa in 2020, on both Spotify and Apple Music.
The songstress hasn’t been resting on her laurels since then. After signing with Columbia Records, she released ve singles between 2021 and 2023, and this year she was announced as Spotify Equal Africa’s Artist for October.
October also saw the release of her rst full album, Stone Cold Heart, as an independent artist once more.
The album is divided into two halves, one exploring heartache and trauma, the other her growing con dence and courage. One thing you can be con dent about is Elaine’s future as a shining inspiration for independent musicians.
