TRENDY DESIGNERS Kelebogile Nondzaba speaks to KZN-based interior designers about the world of interior décor and design
luxurious velvets, sculptural wood and pops of metals such as copper and gold. To keep the winter cold out, you should layer, layer, layer! Create warmth to your space by layering with varied textures – natural elements (wood, leather and glass) combined with statement pieces to create a unique, comfy space – plush upholstery fabrics, beautifully textured wallpapers, silky rugs underfoot, and oversized comfy furniture. Incorporate tactile materials like velvets, silks, wool, leather and faux fur.
SCHANÈ ANDERSON
Founder and creative director of international award-winning, trendsetting design studio Olala Interiors
To me the latest décor trends showcase organic beauty. Natural materials like rattan, linen, jute, timber, concrete and organic forms have long been entrenched in interiors, and it seems they will still be in the coming years. Mixing gorgeous natural elements, think glass lights in different forms and colours, smoked and amber, with modern, sleek marbles, cork wallpapers,

What I love most about my job is … all of it! The good, the challenges, the frustration at times – this is what makes us find fabulous solutions. No two days are ever the same. Because Olala Interiors offers a full decorating and design collaborative, we can go from designing electrical and plumbing layouts to specifying wall and floor finishes, designing kitchens and bathrooms, selecting lighting and styling a home (the so-called fluff), readying it for the client. Every project is touched by each member of the Olala Interiors team – the detail involved in every project is phenomenal. As a collaborative, we are truly successful. Our team loves that people aspire and dream and are continually humbled by their trust for us to bring those dreams to fruition. www.olalainteriors.com

Keep the cold winter weather away with warm textured rugs or soft plush throws to cosy up to the fire. Adding soft elements such as scatter cushions will create a comfortable and snug home to last through the chilly months. Layering textures of rugs, throws and cushions help a great deal in warming your space. Soft, warm colours such as sage greens, muted mustards, petrol blues and sandy colours will make an appearance this winter.
KIRSTY LANGLEY
Director of Design Hatch, a turnkey interior design and décor firm specialising in luxury properties The latest décor trends include marble and stone, which have come back into fashion, and not just on countertops. Large formats are being used in bathrooms, as is wall cladding, to create a statement. We are seeing a revival of the famous wall panelling but done with a modern twist. Through multimedia, walls are becoming art works and features on their own. Wallpaper, cladding, lighting, stone and paint are all being used in conjunction with each other to create a statement. Metallics are here to stay, but they have been toned down and used in more subtle elements. Metallics such as brushed or antiqued golds, brushed bronzes and blacks are being used only in the detail of a home and not as a statement as they were previously. “Less is more” is the new trend with metallics.
What I love about my job is that as designers, it’s so satisfying to see a design on paper become a reality. It is also rewarding to go through each phase of the design process, from construction all the way to the final small touches at the end. It’s amazing to see how different each of our projects is – we rarely (if ever) end up doing the same style twice. This allows us to appreciate all design styles, and we enjoy coming up with new and clever ways of designing and doing things. There is never a dull moment in the life of a designer. IG: design.hatch

Add warmth to your space this winter by adding layers to interiors rather than drastically changing them. This is ideal for our South African winter. Add sherpa throws to the ends of beds or drape them over couches. Bring in soft lighting. Candles in unconventional shapes and with patterns, or faux fireplaces, will add a modern look to your interior. Rugs and cushions also make spaces cosy.
DHERSHAN NAIDOO
Commercial and residential interior designer and CEO of Dhershan Interior Designs We’re no longer choosing eco-friendly products for eco-friendly sake – sustainable materials are now trendy in their own right. And so, in 2022, the theme of sustainability has fast begun to play second fiddle to design. If COVID-19 made our home our sanctuary in 2020, in 2022, it is our castle. Home owners who have invested in their homes in the past few years, entertaining themselves, are now ready to show them off. Concepts such as the “art gallery home” gleam with statement pieces. The trend is towards dramatic, designer and local, with a sustainable back story, of course. These include big, bold light fittings, mirrors and handcrafted furniture. As lockdown lifts in South Africa, the overall feeling is optimistic.
14
What I love most about my job is being able to offer my clients peace of mind. I travel to exhibitions locally and abroad and attend launches for new product innovations. As a professional interior designer, I’m on top of constantly evolving trends and save my clients a great deal of time surveying the options by bringing these to them. As industry insiders, we know where to get the best materials and the best prices and can help you select what is best for your taste and lifestyle. We have already vetted contractors for you and carry the burden for you. Interior designers build trust relationships with their clients, and for this reason, it is a people’s-person kind of job. I’m passionate about my work. I love the interactive nature of my work, and the ability to visibly make a difference to people’s lives is incredibly rewarding. www.dhershan.co.za

any people these days are looking for a lock-up-and-go lifestyle that offers a sense of safety and comfort. “The rise in estate living can be attributed to more safety benefits like security guards, electric fencing, cameras, etc. Consumers want to feel secure in their homes and also want a sense of privacy,” says Rakhee Singh of Sera Bella. Living in an estate usually means security and lush open spaces focusing on community and lifestyle, says Cherice Torlage of Kraaines Interiors. “The value of property in private estates tends to grow yearly, making this type of property a good investment.

“Families are looking for safe, beautiful places for their children to grow up. Being able to move freely enjoying nature in safe spaces is important. Having picnics with neighbours, enjoying after-work strolls, maybe playing golf, most of all spending time outdoors with family and friends,” she says. According to Derek Thomson, principal and director of San Lameer, people are trying to escape city living to find their piece of paradise. “The lower South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is peaceful and tranquil and still quite undeveloped, which

corporate rules. There are also taxes and levies that must be paid for the upkeep of the estate.” Torlage agrees. “Estates are governed by rules that residents must adhere to. These rules are to protect residents and make sure a pleasant culture is created. Some estates may include clauses about whether pets are allowed, and some estates are perfect for large families, offering wonderful space between homes, and with options of very large family homes.”

THE PERKS Most estates generally offer great security, but other services and facilities differ, says Thomson. “San Lameer offers a day spa and hotel as well as most sporting facilities, from squash and tennis courts to bowling greens and a mashie golf course, for the family to all enjoy. San Lameer caters for all age categories. There are paddling ponds, mountain
bike tracks and squash courts, and crowned eagles.” Special living developments offer unique features like estate gyms, golf courses and more, says Torlage. “Some estates offer small compact living spaces, and others will specialise in spacious homes. Moving to a secure estate could be a life-changing experience for your family.” Q

GREG BELLARS ARCHITECTS 033 343 2232 Greg Bellars Architects was commissioned to design a new home on a challenging site in a premium KwaZulu-Natal golf estate. The site has a watercourse running through it that had to be protected. This reduced the developable space considerably, but presented equal opportunity for views into an indigenous forest canopy. The architect ensured that with the site constraints and working with a passionate home owner, this resulted in a space that the owners’ grown children and future grandchildren could all enjoy. Greg Bellars Architects was compliant with the estate’s architectural guidelines, using natural stone, plaster and extensive areas of timber decking and glass to bring in natural light that framed unexpected views of the golf course and the forest.

he luscious Midlands Meander is home to this beautiful property located on a prime spot within a luxury golf and lifestyle estate. “It’s more than just a home, it’s a sanctuary and a representation of everything I have always wanted to have in a home,” says the owner. For him, teaming up with his architect and construction firm was integral to materialising this dream retreat. He applied a large amount of what he learned to make the home comfortable and unique. “I paid special attention to applying solutions to the little things that most home owners find irritating, but opt to live with no matter the inconvenience. It is ironic that we all learn from our life experiences yet seldom have the opportunity to put them to use, especially when approaching retirement.

Assisting this home owner, Marksman Heating – a specialist in the supply and installation of a wide variety of fireplaces and built-in braais – provided both fireplaces: one for the living area and the other in the bar and entertainment space. The owner wanted the fireplaces to conform to the style of the home and provide appealing focal points where form meets function. Marksman Heating supplied a cast iron closed combustion Lacunza Tarbes wood burner with black vitreous enamel flue pipes for the main living area, and the Infiniti Classic Insert flueless gas fireplace for the bar area.

“This site not only engages with nature, but it ensures privacy, and you can’t see any immediate neighbours. The home cantilevers into an indigenous forest on one side and a natural pond on the other. This creates a magnet for birds, terrapins, buck and eagles, to name a few, that we all get to enjoy. “Each and every day we are harmonised with the tranquillity; it makes us feel like we are living in a resort and 26
not in a gated residential estate.” Echoing its environment, the interiors of the home have adopted a natural aesthetic that runs throughout. “We chose neutral earth tones to complement the west side forest, which also has a natural stream meandering through it,” says the owner. “The style was conceived by the engineered double and triple cantilevers that laid down the canvas for my

architect, aimed at enhancing the feel of being in a treehouse while being respectful of the forest floor and stream, by ensuring that the foundation of the house was far away from the riverain line.” With a goal to ensure that this property would not just be another building imposing on the planet, the owner took great pride in the build, and this is evident in each detail of this beautiful home.
ABOVE: KwaZulu-Natal-based Venetian Blind Centre offers a wide range of blinds, awnings, shutters, home automation and flooring solutions. Working with the home owner, the company met the brief for an elegant, timeless look that complemented the home, but offered a subtle contrast in style. It was important to the owner that the products selected integrated into his current lifestyle without complicating any aspect of his daily living. Roller shades with Somfy automation were installed. Neutral colours and timeless designs were chosen to maintain a spacious feel, while creating a relaxing ambience.
