1 summer tipple? Gin martini. R100 for a secret Santa gift? The most decadent chocolate. A holiday destination 1 000km away? Bo Kaap, 25km from Nelspruit. It’s a piece of heaven that overlooks the Drakensberg escarpment, wild horses roaming around, a place to switch off. 10am on a Monday? In an ideal world, I’d be having a full body ayurvedic massage, somewhere exotic like Kerala in India. But in real life I would be in the salon or on a shoot.

HELEN JENNINGS’S PORTRAIT BY LAKIN OGUNBANWO, KAREN VAN WYNGAARD’S PORTRAIT BY LEANNE CLUNIES ROSS

I really believe my team and I have the best of both worlds. Working on a dynamic weekly publication like Sunday Times Fashion Weekly, we get to share the latest trends, best shopping and interesting designer discoveries with our readers. We seldom have a minute to stand still and take it all in. And when we work on our biannual trend guide, The Edit, we have the opportunity to craft editorials over time, source spectacular pieces and interview fashion legends at length. Often, we start with an editorial wish list – concepts that might be too ambitious, but that we aspire to do regardless. For this issue, we pulled it off and sat down with ’90s supermodel Josie Borain (see page 30) to find out about her legendary career working with Calvin Klein on his groundbreaking campaigns, and life thereafter. Josie bowled us all over on set – no drama, no strict dietary requirements, no requests for chilled Evian water in expensive Baccarat crystal, no avant-garde electro pop to get her in the mood. This true supermodel, at 52, walked on set, cued the photographer and, frame after frame, delivered beautiful shots. Another tick on our wish list was shooting our Eccentric Birds editorial (see page 52) in Clive Rundle’s overgrown garden in Kensington, Joburg. I remember this garden and his passion for finding the right iris bulb to plant en masse from interning with him many years ago. Clive’s garden is as spectacular now as it was then. This issue is filled with all of our favourite finds and musthaves for the season ahead. I hope you enjoy poring over it as much as we did creating it.

It contains peptides and hydrators for a twice-daily, luxurious, anti-ageing ritual. FROM GAMINE CALVIN KLEIN SUPERMODEL TO ASSURED WOMAN, AT THE AGE OF 52 SOUTH AFRICA’S FIRST TRUE SUPERMODEL HAS FOUND HERSELF

TEXT Jocelyn Warrington PHOTOGRAPHY Travys Owen/ One League HAIR Mary Gouveia MAKEUP Carl Isaacs PHOTOGRAPHER’S ASSISTANT Cass Collette

INTERVIEW / EXCLUSIVE

JOSIE BORAIN’S CROPPED HAIR AND ANDROGYNOUS BEAUTY WERE ANACHRONISMS IN A TIME WHEN FASHION MAGAZINE COVERS WERE DOMINATED BY PICTUREPRETTY CINDY CRAWFORD AND CHRISTY TURLINGTON POUTS. SO IT COMES AS SOMETHING OF A SURPRISE, THEN, THAT THE SUPERMODEL I MEET AT LA CUCCINA IN HOUT BAY IS ANYTHING BUT ANDROGYNOUS.

Jocelyn Warrington: You were 21 when Calvin Klein signed you on a three-year, $1-million package, living, working and playing in Paris and New York. That’s a long way from white middle-class Joburg suburbia, where you grew up. Josie Borain (wolfing down a croissant – “the kids are banting!”): Yes, a lot happened when I was very young. I only got into modelling as a backdoor to try to get work in the fashion industry. I was 18, dyslexic, had no matric certificate and had followed a boyfriend to Cape Town. It was just a job. I tended to look at things that way back then. I saw my face plastered all over Times Square and I only took one photograph. I guess my upbringing had something to do with it – I come from a family of realists. We don’t sweep things under the carpet. And the older I get the more intolerant I become of pretences – even slightly judgmental of them. JW: But you were big! As big as it was possible to be? JB: I had the right look. I came on to the scene when models were all long-haired and cutesy. I was a refreshing change, that’s all. I don’t think I was a very good model really. In nearly every picture I’m looking off camera, usually in profile. I was never a poser or a pouter. JW: You made a lot of money though? JB: I did, and I’ve been careful with it. I don’t do Prada handbags and Gucci sunglasses. I wear hand-me-downs from Chic Mama, a charity shop in Hout Bay. JW: Okay, so you didn’t snort your money up your nose, but you lived it up, surely? I mean, come on, you were fraternising with supermodels and film stars? JB [laughs]: I was – I am – actually very shy, which people sometimes interpret as rudeness. At those parties, I’d hang out with the barman, and I’m not even a drinker. I’d pick up my camera and take photographs of the models in makeup or of the crew, the working people. I was more comfortable like that. JW: It was a shield, then, your camera?

JB: Yes, definitely a shield. You have to remember that it was a very different world back then. South Africa was incredibly insular – the only magazines we had were Fairlady, Rooi Rose and Scope. There was no social media. There was a lot less information and also a lot less confusion, I guess. We were breaking rules without knowing we were doing it. Nowadays, everything is so politically correct, everyone is trying so hard to be perfect. There was no therapy in the ’80s. We blundered through the issues as we faced them. JW: Issues like the death of your first husband? He was a photographer, right, and it is to him that you credit your love affair with photography? Was it an instant attraction between you and the camera? JB: It was. And I worked with some great photographers, Peter Lindbergh, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, and later, when I shot commercials, with cinematographer Néstor Almendros. They were pure genius. That level of creativity is such a turn-on. Then digital came along and anyone could take a photograph. JW: There were other men though. You’re divorced with children by two different fathers. You even dated “The Earl” Charles Spencer for a while . . . JB: I’ve made a few mistakes [laughs]. No, I actually wouldn’t call them mistakes. They were what they were. I was introduced to Charles by his former wife, Victoria [Lockwood]. I had a two-and-a-half-monthold baby. I dated him for nine months. JW: It just happened to be during the time that his famous sister, Princess Diana, died in a car accident. And you attended the funeral. That must have been surreal? JB: Yes, when they put her in the ground there were only three non-family members on that island – the butler, the chauffeur and me! I do ask: “Why me?” I guess they knew I wouldn’t sell the story [laughing], I’d just give it away for free! JW: And you were married shortly after that to your second husband? JB: Langley is 10 years younger than me. We had

INTERVIEW / EXCLUSIVE two children together. He’s a great dad. But when I look back I see that all these people came into my life when I was in a kind of lull. They chose me. And they weren’t really my people. I’m so much better off now in so many ways. I can see the patterns in my life and I’m grateful for that insight. These days, my friends and my children are what’s important to me. I choose my own tribe. JW: So tell us about motherhood? You have an 18-year-old son, Peter Raven, who’s living and working in New York, and two teenagers, Willow, 15, and Phoenix, 13? JB: Parenting sucks! No one tells you how scary it is or that you will live for evermore in constant fear of your children’s safety. My happy place is in my own home with my children around me, where I know they are safe, like a lioness with her pride – and no hangers-on. JW: You’ve never considered emigrating? JB: I worry about my children’s futures. And I was away from home for a long time – from ’82 to ’95. But my heart is here. They say you fall in love with either Africa or India. I fell for Africa. JW: What’s next, then, for Josie Borain? JB: To finish raising my children. I’ve also started making art, so maybe that will lead somewhere. I’m in a very lucky place right now – I don’t need or want anything. Maybe when I’m done with the kids I’ll start walking. I might walk to Egypt.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

We ask Haidee to pick her top five magazines 1. The Gentlewoman, for its intelligent, forward-thinking content and profiles on educated, professional women rather than the typical focus on actresses and young starlets.

“I SAW MY FACE PLASTERED ALL OVER TIMES SQUARE AND I ONLY TOOK ONE PHOTOGRAPH”

3. Double, for innovative photography and fashion presented in a horizontal format. Photographers are given at least 20 pages to express themselves; a combination of still life, art and fashion photography uninterrupted by advertising. 4. Document, for its modern, interesting use of photographers and stylists to create a true fashion spread, without advertising restrictions. It’s well printed and one of the more interesting magazines from New York. 5. Holiday, a great travel magazine. Each issue focuses on a country or place and examines it culturally and topically. It’s not a “where to go and what to do”, but after reading it you are inspired to travel there.

GREAT

DAMES AS BEAUTY IDEALS SLOWLY SHIFT, WOMEN WHO RESONATE ON A LEVEL DEEPER THAN YOUTHFULNESS ARE CHANGING THE FACE OF INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGNS TEXT Helen Jennings PHOTOGRAPHY Ari Seth Cohen

42 THE EDIT September 2015

Kim Kardashian has nothing on Joan Didion. When the 80-year-old literary genius was unveiled as the face of the SS15 Céline campaign earlier this year, the news – and Juergen Teller’s image of her looking suitably recalcitrant in black sunglasses – near enough broke the internet. Trending across social media in minutes, it made headlines around the globe from glossies to broadsheets to blogs. Didion is far from the only mature lady to front campaigns for major fashion houses recently. The same season, Saint Laurent caused a similar stir with its advert starring 71-year-old folk heroine Joni Mitchell. And 93-year-old Iris Apfel nestled up to Karlie Kloss for Kate Spade and played on her unparalleled taste in jewellery for Alexis Bittar. This trend has been emerging for some time. Marc Jacobs has worked with both Cher, 69, and Jessica Lange, 66. Helen Mirren, 70, and Diane Keaton, 69, are spokeswomen for L’Oréal. Nars collaborated with Charlotte Rampling, 69. Susan Sarandon, 68, has signed to Uniqlo and Neiman Marcus. And Lauren Hutton, 71, has strutted her stuff for Lucky Brand. Senior models have been in high demand too – Daphne Selfe, 87, for Dolce & Gabbana, Leslie Winer, 61, for Vivienne Westwood and Jacky O’Shaughnessy, 63, for American Apparel. So on planet fashion it’s never been more hip to be a venerable dame than it is right now. This seeming shift away from an obsession with being young towards a more diverse appreciation of beauty is breaking with conventions that have been in place since the youth quake of the 1960s, which ironically is when some of these golden girls were in their so-called prime. So what is at work here? “The industry has become jaded with the triedand-trusted formulas and we’re all suffering image fatigue,” says Sara Hemming, a leading visual director who has worked on campaigns for Stella McCartney, Prada and Dior. “That’s why brands are trying a lot harder to cast women who make a statement and resonate on an emotional level. Most young models don’t have that. Whereas someone like Joan Didion has integrity and is someone we admire, which is why Phoebe Philo knew she could evoke the brand’s DNA.” The same could be said of all of these women. They’ve lived exceptional lives and exude an inner confidence that makes them attractive irrespective of age. For millennials, they are the icons to aspire to. For thirtysomethings and fortysomethings, they’re living proof that it’s possible to grow old with grace – and good shoes. “The women who can afford to buy luxury goods tend to be older and want fashion that has meaning. That’s why these ads sell,” adds Hemming. “Ideals of beauty are always changing, that’s the nature of fashion, but right now it’s about unusual looks

and standing out.” In South Africa, Jackie Burger has always championed natural beauty and is admired for embracing her grey hair. The former Elle editor recently founded Salon58, a series of curated events where intelligent women share a sensorial discovery of local fashion, food and art. Now 56 years young, she’s as striking as ever but admits it takes effort to keep confident. “Working in fashion, it’s inevitable that as your years shift, you begin to question yourself. Am I still relevant? Should I do something about my appearance? But you have to walk your talk and be authentic to yourself,” Burger says. With maturity comes a fantastic wardrobe, one that Burger has expertly edited over the years. “When you’re young it’s your prerogative to experiment. As you grow older you rely on the emotion of wearing a certain colour or pattern. Your respect for quality and cut becomes profound. You address tailoring and appreciate beautiful fabrics that sit and flow on your body.” Her style icons hail the bygone era of retro glamour when being young and thin weren’t the only goals. “Katharine Hepburn’s white shirts, Simone de Beauvoir’s turbans, Marlene Dietrich’s pinstriped suits – and the scarlet mouth that goes with it. I look to pioneering women who never failed to live their strength and creativity.” Burger welcomes mature campaign girls and cautions against crying wolf on the industry. “Baby boomers grew up to be astute consumers so it would be stupid to ignore them. Iris and Joni are representative of their generation and we admire their liberated aesthetic. But this all needs to be sustained. It’s easy to call it sensationalism but we have the choice to support it or not. There is a need for us all to enjoy the luxury of substance again.” Does she plan to still be making a sartorial statement at Apfel’s age? “I hope so. I’ll wear my rings, red lipstick and something deliciously crazy.” What all of these campaign stars share is their fame. It’s much easier to stay looking perfect – and in the public’s consciousness – with the accoutrements of a celebrity lifestyle behind you. And it also has to be said that they’re all white. With rare exceptions such as Iman, who is still landing magazine covers at the age of 60, and Pat Cleveland, who has modelled alongside her daughter, Anna, for both Zac Posen and Lanvin, older women of colour remain woefully underrepresented. Marketing executive Abrima Erwiah, cofounder of Ghana-based ethical fashion line Studio One Eighty Nine with Rosario Dawson, takes inspiration from her aunt, Naomi Sims. She rose to prominence as part of this first generation of black supermodels including Iman, Cleveland, Grace Jones, Toukie Smith, Peggy Dillard and Bethann Hardison. Her

“It’s more important to think about the lasting impact that these advertisements have and how they can shape our views towards ageing”

1969 Life magazine cover spearheaded the Black is Beautiful movement and still resonates today. “It’s important for young people of all races to celebrate people of all races, genders, shapes, sizes and backgrounds. If we only tell one story, whatever story that may be, how can we grow?” says Erwiah. “If you consider that the average age in Africa is 18.6, it’s clear we have a lot of young people who need to see our heroes grow older and have staying power. We need to know that we will be here tomorrow. And we need to learn how to develop and have a place in society at every age. Brands have a great opportunity to speak to a wide demographic by working with diverse models who reflect their audience’s interests.” Today, older women of every creed have achieved more professionally than previous generations and aren’t ready to retire from society or style anytime soon. It’s these unsung seasoned ladies that Sue Bourne’s hugely successful film Fabulous Fashionistas puts in the limelight. The award-winning director chose six women living in the UK with an average age of 80, each with her own inimitable dress sense. “My films are about finding the extraordinary in the apparently ordinary,” Bourne says. “From Bridgette, who lives on a pittance but puts amazing looks together from charity shop buys, to Baroness Trumpington, who has a clothing catalogue fetish and goes to the hairdresser every week, they’re all fantastic role models. Everyone is scared of old age but these women are still squeezing the pips out of life.” Across the pond, Ari Seth Cohen has been photographing clotheshorses of a certain age in New York since 2008 for his blog, Advanced Style. Now a book and film, his output has partly inspired fashion’s love affair with mature couture. He has worked on castings for Karen Millen and Lanvin and the blog inspired Marc Jacobs’s AW12 collection. “The senior set has been ignored for so long

so it’s wonderful to see a rise in the use of older faces in advertising,” Cohen says. “I think it’s more important to think about the lasting impact that these advertisements have and how they can shape our views towards ageing, rather than worrying if this is a gimmick or not. “Blogging has opened up our visual catalogue and created a diversification,” he adds. “These women are showing us all that beauty, brains and style don’t end, but rather grow with age. There is a sense of freedom in the way they dress and live their lives. I hear from young girls every day, saying that they are no longer afraid of getting older. They can’t wait to look and live there lives like these women. For me, that is really rewarding.” Sue Kreitzman stars in Advanced Style and Fabulous Fashionistas and earlier this year Selfridges selected her for its Bright Old Things campaign alongside a cast of other veteran creatives. A former food writer with 27 books to her name, in 1998 she turned her talents to becoming an artist instead. Now 75, her primitive paintings and “assemblages” of goddesses and heroines are created from acrylic, nail varnish and found objects. She exhibits widely and has become a street-style star thanks to her statement accessories and unique outfits, which are all handmade from vintage fabrics. No wonder Tatty Devine has designed a necklace in her honour. “When I leave my flat, I cannot bear to leave art and colour behind so I wrap myself in both and sashay forth into the world. I am quite famous for my ‘walking collage’ style. It brings me much joy,” Kreitzman says. Her notoriety puts wind in the sails to what she calls today’s “old lady revolution”. All women – and men – can take courage from her exuberant style and lead by her indomitable example. “We are living longer, we are living better, we are vital and valuable members of the populace and we refuse to be invisible!”

MARY HOLLAND

48 44 THE EDIT September 2015

When you are in town, the best place to stay is The Standard. It’s one of the first hotels I ever stayed at in New York. Both of the Standards, on the Highline and East Village, have incredible views! While you’re there, you have to try their cheeseburger and a mezcal cocktail. New Yorkers don’t do breakfast – they do brunch. I love Russ & Daughters for anything with salmon; El Rey Coffee Bar & Luncheonette; Dimes, and Mile End Deli. The good news is that if you get there early, it’s likely you’ll avoid a queue. The coolest spot to take an Instagram snap is from Brooklyn Bridge Park – the views of Manhattan are astounding. Where do I begin with my favourite clothing stores? For shops that won’t break the bank, I love Steven Alan, Bird, and Madewell. We also recently acquired our own & Other Stories, and Cos stores. I’m not the biggest fan of department stores, but if you’re looking to peruse a host of designer collections, go to Bergdorf & Goodman. A friend of mine, who is in decor and styling, took me there and explained all the different interior-designer elements. We had a glass of champagne with

all the Park Avenue princesses at the Kelly Wearstler-designed restaurant on the top floor. It’s a real old-school uptown experience. If you are interested in art, visit the Museum Mile. It runs along 5th Avenue (next to Central Park) and is home to the Met (which opens its rooftop in summer), the Guggenheim and the Neue Galerie. While you’re there, grab a coffee and pastry at the Austrian coffee house, Café Sabarsky. The Moma is further downtown on West 53rd Street, so jump in a cab or take the subway down. I think it’s best to get around by foot. I love to walk in New York. While cabs are often easier, it’s sometimes quicker to take the subway or just walk. My best kept secret address is Arcade, a bakery hidden in the lobby of a building downtown. It’s not easy to find good croissants in New York and Arcade has the best! I also love the conservatory at the New York Botanical Garden. And Fornino, a pizza restaurant at the end of Brooklyn Bridge Park, which has delicious pizza and great views of Manhattan – just avoid it on a Sunday when families descend upon it! If you’re in need of some serious retail therapy and want to splurge, buy a bottle of wine at a

FAVOURITE 5

restaurant. There is no end to splurging in New York! Also try ABC Carpet & Home; The Line; Fivestory; Creatures of Comfort; Dover Street Market, or just take a walk down Madison Avenue. My favourite bookstore is McNally Jackson in Soho and Powerhouse Arena in Dumbo. The most fashionable address in town is Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bar, which opened earlier this year. Unless you’re part of the fashion scene it’s next to impossible to get a booking. And Cosme, a restaurant that chef Enrique Olvera just opened, is the hottest restaurant in town.

The best place for a cocktail is the top of the Standard. The views are incredible and the interior feels like you’ve stepped into an episode of The Jetsons. Try Bemelmans Bar, a fancy piano bar at the Carlyle Hotel, for a real New York Upper Eastside experience. And the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn has a great rooftop. The place to be seen is probably The Clocktower on Madison Avenue. It’s at Ian Schrager’s new the New York Edition hotel and has a Michelin-star chef, so I bet people are clawing to get in. For a stylish intimate dinner, go to Navy, a seafood restaurant hidden away on Sullivan Street in Soho; Buvette, a French restaurant in the West Village, or Marlow & Sons in Brooklyn. Don’t leave NYC before you see a show on Broadway; visit Central Park – go further north to avoid the tourists; walk a bridge and have oysters at Grand Central Station . . . tourist things you just have to do. If you’re there in the summer, see what free shows are on. Many of the parks offer loads of free concerts and movie screenings.

We ask Lizel to pick her top five Cape Town shopping destinations

1. Birba Furniture. Amazing quality, handcrafted, mid-century modern inspired furniture that’s locally manufactured from solid wood. I can’t wait to get my hands on the unique pieces from their first collection, Neutra, inspired by the legendary architect. 2. Maison Mara. This concept womenswear store is a feast for the senses, stretching over three intimate floors. Now we can stock up on our Acne denims locally. 3. Kirsten Goss. The hottest fine jewellery from this mega-talented designer. I am obsessed with the statement origami earrings. A marvellous daily temptation. 4. Equus at Cavalli. This super-chic boutique is beautifully designed with superb local design talent. I love Melissa Jayne’s clothing label, Kretschmer. Her Femme Fatal dress in midnight blue is a must-have. I’m also mad about the amazing scarves from Trebene. 5. Haute Antiques. I always lose track of time visiting this place. Gilles de Moyencourt has a great eye for hunting down exquisite treasures and his store is layered with beautiful finds.

MIMCO CREATIVE AND MANAGING DIRECTOR CATHRYN WILLS IS A POWERHOUSE WHO EFFORTLESSLY DIRECTS A BRAND DEDICATED TO THE PLEASURES OF BIJOUX TEXT Tiaan

Nagel As I arrive at the spectacularly cool Mimco offices in Melbourne, Australia, creative and managing director Cathryn Wills greets me wearing a Bella Freud Solidarité Feminine sweater, instantly affirming her point of view. She is, after all, running an international accessories brand that prides itself on celebrating woman. Over a quick, super-Italian lunch, we discuss everything from South African politics and her last trip to Porte de Clignancourt in Paris, where she tracked down vintage finds to spark a new direction for the season, to the face of Mimco’s latest

Atomic Ranger campaign, international supermodel Soo Joo Park. It soon becomes crystal clear that the stylish Wills prioritises understanding the business from multiple angles. Mimco has been crafting accessories for nearly 20 years in Australia and, last year, extended its offering to the South African market, igniting Wills’s interest in South African politics to better understand the local market and consumer. Her passion for the continent and quest to empower woman led her to join forces with Simone Cipriani, from the Ethical Fashion Initiative of the

FAVOURITE 5

International Trade Centre, which resulted in a beaded clutch and shopper project in Kenya last season. Back in the boardroom, Wills introduces me to one of Mimco’s senior design managers, Ruth Walker, and together they take me through Mimco’s latest inspiration: “She’s the Atomic Ranger,” says Walker. “She’ll fight if she has to. She’s strong and she is equipped for survival.” The first chapter of the Atomic Ranger season is utilitarian, which sparks the Reconnaissance chapter that follows. The collection is inspired by warm, strong khakis, honey, vanilla and highlights of aperol orange and represents the ultimate in utility-pretty. Think antique gold chains in light, foil gold; rich, tiger-eye stones mixed with glass pearls, and heavy-gauge threads wrapped through box chains and cup chains. As the season progresses, the collection introduces the Artisan Traveller, talking to the notion of brave spirit animals that walk alongside our Ranger as she navigates the earth hunting for broken art, into which she will breathe new life. Fronting the iconic brand’s new campaign is fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld’s most recent muse, Park, who flew in from Seoul, South Korea, (directly after opening Chanel’s runway show) to shoot the campaign in Melbourne. Park defies many notions of the stereotypical supermodel in her refusal to be typecast, and for this reason Wills was drawn to her. “Mimco believes in women in all their individuality, their strength and their ability to lead, inspire, nurture and educate. Soo Joo Park was a perfect brand fit who celebrates these values and traits,” shares Wills, proudly. And it seems that the feeling was mutual. Park was “impressed by the creative team at the helm of the brand, taking an idea with a strong story behind it and using quality materials to produce special and highly

collectable pieces”. The beliefs at the heart of Mimco – quality product, eclectic styling and women empowerment – resonated. Early the next morning after a day of design inspiration, we jet off to join Australian members of the press, most of whom are based in Sydney, and attend the press presentation, as well as the opening, of Mimco’s new, highly anticipated flagship boutique on Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall. Located in Australia’s most prominent and luxurious retail strip, the flagship store marks the beginning of an exciting new journey for the brand, combining state-of-the-art architecture with effortless style and luxury. For Wills, luxury is about quality, soul, innovation, storytelling, heritage and creativity and technology allows Mimco to convey all of the traits that are close to the brand’s heart. As a true creative in tune with her brand, Wills also understands the beauty of crafting bespoke products in a highly competitive era of all things digital and mass produced. After a celebratory day, I join the rest of the Mimco team for a spectacular dinner at the Bennelong inside Sydney Opera House, surrounded by the city’s breath-taking lights, and am finally able to take it all in. True to Mimco’s testament of affordable luxury, I was treated, in similar style, to a glimpse of a tremendous team passionately working on a solid brand. It’s difficult not to be inspired by the creativity instilled by a visionary.

LINDIWE SUTTLE,

1 2 3 4 5 MUSICIAN

We ask Lindiwe to pick her top five all-time favourite songs

1. “They Don’t Care About Us” by Michael Jackson. It is such a rebellious song that still rings true. Michael Jackson was not only an entertainer – he used his voice to speak out against injustice and that’s a true artist. 2. “Orphan Girl” by Gillian Welch. Growing up in southern US, I was surrounded by country music. I lived in SA for 10 years without family, so this was my theme song. I get like an orphan girl being so far away from them. 3. “Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston. My hero. She was the woman many black girls looked up to and she was my vocal coach. I learned to sing by singing her songs in my room for years. 4. “Love is a Good Thing” by Sheryl Crow. She captured me with her soulful country voice and moving message about not being silent about things that matter. The song has a chant-like message: “Love is a good thing.” 5. “Bitch Better Have My Money” by Rihanna. My ultimate dance-swagger song that gets me moving. As a strong woman, this song pumps me up with bad-ass-ness. I think all girls need to have this unapologetic “I’m a boss” vibe.

STYLISH JODIE ENNIK LEADS A BUSY LIFE RUNNING HER PRODUCTION AGENCY, LAMPOST. THE ENTREPRENEURIAL CREATIVE SHARES WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WALK IN HER SHOES TEXT Jodie

6:15 AM

Ennik PHOTOGRAPHY Warren van Rensburg/Lampost

4:00 PM

My alarm wakes me up and I grab my gym gear to get ready for a 7am session with my personal trainer, Doug. I’m used to early mornings from shoots and generally have no problem with getting up, as long as it involves a cup of tea first. And so begins my first negotiation of the day – to see if I can avoid running 400m on the treadmill. I enjoy gym but the rebel in me resists any kind of order, so there is quite a lot of smart talk from me to Doug throughout the session.

– it’s like a bit of brain stretching. Next up is a staff meeting with my Joburg team, Kate, Leigh, Daniella, Gugu and Sphiwe, and Angela, who works for me from Cape Town and Skypes into the meeting. There’s a lot to cover across all the divisions of Lampost, from photography, stylists, makeup and hair artists to our character agency of 200 people. I take some time with Daniella, who handles our social media, to discuss what images we’ll post for the day and week ahead.

8:00 AM

11:00 AM

I’m back at home from my gym session and eat a healthy breakfast, usually fruit and a poached egg. Given the opportunity I would probably skip this meal but my husband, Ronald, is persistent. He’s a wonderful influence on my health. I check my e-mails and respond to any that may have come in during the evening or early morning. When I get these out of the way first thing in the morning before the next batch of e-mails comes in, it gives me a little head-start on the day. Then it takes me about 20 minutes to catch up on the world news, usually on CNN, BBC and eNCA, with my two cats, Kenzo and Harlem, and a goodbye kiss from Ronald, who’s heading to work.

9:00 AM We prep for tomorrow’s photoshoot on location for an advertising campaign with a celebrity and there are some last-minute logistics to lock down. When I’m not shooting, I’m in the office. I enjoy production, probably because most of it involves some kind of problem-solving and lateral thinking

potential photographic and stylist interns – they’re great! I sign them up for a three-month internship to work alongside our photographers and stylists. Our internship programmes are a great way of finding young, new creative talent. Even our permanent staff entered the business this way.

I sign off proofs for a book we’re printing and Kate gives it a proper look too. I am so happy to finally see it in print! It looks wonderful. Shortly afterwards, I leave to check the location for tomorrow’s shoot to make sure the floor on the rooftop is prepped as planned. It’s going to be a long day, not to mention cold when we arrive on set first thing at 7am, so I need to make sure everyone will be comfortable.

1:00 PM I grab a quick lunch at Croft & Co in Parkview. I normally eat on the run and today is no different. Thankfully, the service is prompt so I’m in and out in good time to meet one of our photographers at a client’s office for a job briefing. It’s a fun one that involves casting interesting characters and locations for a radio station campaign. Next, one more stop at a different shoot that Leigh is producing to touch base with the client and crew. It seems to be going well and they’re running ahead of schedule. I rush back to the office to interview

The office is bustling with new characters arriving to sign up with Gugu, who handles Lampost cast. When I am at the office I like to look in on them and meet them personally. We have a selection process with our cast, so those who have made it to this stage are usually what we are looking for, but their shoot will be the final say. My day ends with making overnight-stay arrangements for the model flying in from Cape Town for tomorrow’s shoot.

5:30 PM

I arrive home just in time to tickle Kenzo and Harlem hello and get changed for an event.

7:00 PM

Ronald and I head out to an art exhibition. It’s opening night and a festive event, so I’m looking forward to bumping into a few friends and seeing some great art. I’m a big fan and collect contemporary artwork, especially photography, which I have a passion for collecting. My home and office are literally covered in pieces.

10:00 PM

We arrive home and head to bed to finish the documentary I started last night about photographer Sebastião Salgado, “The Salt of the Earth”, before I go to sleep. It contains such powerful imagery and is a wonderful film.

11:00 PM Off to bed. I’ll be up at 5:30am tomorrow and like to get at least seven hours’ sleep when I can. I’m like a big child, really.

We ask Lesley to share her top five denim tips 1. Branded denim makes all the difference. It is not just denim snobbery – the cut and fit are generally superior and you get your money’s worth because a good pair of denims will last for years. The one retail store that does have excellent affordable denim is Topshop. 2. Fabric is important. It can’t have too much Lycra or be too hard. Soft-ish denim is best. 3. I am not a fan of too much happening by way of washes or stitching, for example. Stick to one detail. 4. I find mid-waist jeans most comfortable. Your butt doesn’t pop out every time you bend over, like when you’re wearing low cuts. 5. The darker the denim, the better.

If your skin is normal to oily, try the 3 in 1 Mattifying Cleanser, R80, and Light Moisturiser SPF 15, R80, for oily skin.

We ask Zanele to pick her top five beauty products

1. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. I like to give my skin a gentle scrub every second day and this one is perfect. My skin always feels supple and smooth. Regular exfoliation is a must. 2. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Recovery. A serum can sometimes seem like an indulgence but I cannot live without the extra moisture it gives you. If your skin’s looking tired and dull, I’d recommend this for a boost of energy and radiance. I also use it to minimise scarring. 3. La Prairie Cellular Purifying Clay Mask. My skin gets oily during summer and nothing else works as well to keep me shine-free, without stripping my skin of natural oils. 4. Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. Had a late night and don’t want your face to show it? This is a skin SOS in a tube. 5. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant. I use this multipurpose gel as a lip balm, cuticle and hand softener and anywhere on my body that needs the help. When you get that tingle from fever blisters, a quick rub stops them dead in their tracks.

WHAT BEATS AN EXTRAVAGANT RETREAT FAR AWAY FROM THE CITY? A NEIGHBOURHOOD SPA THAT LEAVES YOU WITH THE SAME LUXURIOUSLY RESTORED FEELING. THE FOUR SEASONS SPA WESTCLIFF IS THE ULTIMATE INDULGENCE TEXT

“The treatment begins with a foot-cleansing ritual, where weary toes swish around a copper bowl filled with warm water and cucumber”

Hotel spas have a reputation for being stuffy and overpriced, with treatments that leave you feeling more wound up than unwound. The new Four Seasons Spa Westcliff, however, is such a welcome respite for Johannesburg city-spa goers. Whether you’re after a heavenly day packed with holistic treatments in a friendly space or a quick manicure between meetings, this spot is the ultimate break from the city – within the city. Treatments aside, even the views of leafy Saxonwold from the Après-Spa outdoor lounge quarter make the spa worth a visit. How lovely it is to sprawl on a lounger under big clear skies sipping on a post-treatment mango smoothie. Once you’re inside the spa, you almost feel like you need to whisper. The muted, Scandi-meetsAfrica interior sets the tone for an almost-sacred place of contemporary calm. The cedar, lavender and sage scent wafting through the space is a mix of the artisan Yswara candles dotted throughout, and a distinct, earthy smell emanating from the authentic wooden fittings. The spa uses two luxurious brands for treatments: Biologique Recherche, from France and a first in South Africa, and Terres d’Afrique, a local brand that’s inspired by African botanicals and natural ingredients. The most difficult decision you’ll face here is deciding between treatments. My treat of choice? Terres d’Afrique Harmony Balancing Full Body Massage, R820 for 60 minutes. After a quick change into a fluffy robe in the enormous change room, which also boasts a sauna and steam room, I’m led to my treatment room along a quiet corridor, which runs perpendicular

to the spa pool outside. The treatment begins with a foot-cleansing ritual, where weary toes swish around a copper bowl filled with warm water and cucumber. A therapist then uses a dollop of natural scrub to gently exfoliate soles, heels and toes. This is the point at which you’ll find yourself involuntarily exhaling your woes. In less than five minutes, shoulders relax and a cool flannel, sprinkled with minty oil, is handed over to refresh tired eyes. Once you’re lying on the cushioned table, the massage begins, and includes a gentle lymphatic drainage with the use of a hand-carved wooden tool called a TriTouch. The tool looks like a Boomerang but feels like a tiny foam roller and is used with aromatic oils to ease and stretch tight muscles. Usually, a lymphatic massage is intense and slightly uncomfortable at times, but the Terres d’Afrique experience will have you nodding off in no time. The ingredients used in the brand’s products are locally and naturally sourced, including Aloe Ferox, which is known to soothe, and organic coconut and kalahari melon oil to moisturise and nourish your skin. The massage ends with my therapist gently touching my arm, whispering to me that my treatment is over and bringing my senses back to reality. Sadly, a one-hour treatment feels like a Joburg minute – nowhere near long enough. Overall, the slick, modern, city space that is the Four Seasons Spa Westcliff is sophisticated, unstuffy and definitely worth a visit. Post-treatment, you’ll feel as if you’ve had a blissful break from the hustle and bustle of the city, even if you’ve just dashed out of the office over lunch for a quick spoil.

MAXHOSA BY LADUMA

My personal style signifier? An embroidered baseball jacket with an eclectic tapestry of geometric pattern, beading and mini-mirrors sewn onto it. I would wear it every day if I could. It has all the elements I love in clothing: meticulous craftsmanship, colour, versatility and sporty femininity. This jacket is a true reflection of my personal style. The first fashion-related decision I made this morning? Sneakers or courts. The one item every woman should have in her wardrobe? A minimalist shirtdress in pure silk or cotton. A good shirtdress is a closet pillar that can be dressed down in a refined way or elevated for formal occasions. I love how you can wear a midilength shirtdress over a cozzie in summer

and leave the skirting unbuttoned. Easy elegance. My next obsession? MaXhosa by Laduma’s SS16 collection and Lulo Cafe’s new single. This season I’m looking forward to? Tennis dresses, neoprene swimsuits, dining outdoors, live music, undone hair and luminous skin. My all-time favourite timepiece? A white gold Piaget Altiplano. I’m a huge fan of Piaget’s clean, highly refined aesthetic. The one thing you will never see me wearing? A wedge of any kind. The fashion moment that changed my life? A phone call in early 2011, offering me the position of Elle fashion editor. I grew up in a small town, King William’s Town, in the Eastern Cape. I was not exposed to anything remotely close to fashion and publishing industries, but I’ve dreamt about working in fashion since I learnt how to draw. Beauty staples I can’t live without? I love to layer fashion as well as fragrances. I never leave the house without a layer of Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt over Lime Basil & Mandarin. My other staples are Chanel Les Beiges sheer powder, Guerlain Cils d’Enfer So Volume Maxi Lash mascara and MAC Ruby Woo. My skin savours Optiphi’s Hydration Therapy, and Intense HA Infinity Serum. My all-time favourite fashion icon? Sade. That sleek, jet-black ponytail, that ruby lip and her feminine use of menswear. There’s no denying Sade’s enduring influence on fashion and beauty. She is always elegant and regal. I admire women of style and substance; women who live out their truths and are not slaves to trends. She is the epitome of a modern classic woman. I never leave home without? A prayer. My favourite drink? A pomegranate mojito mocktail.

My favourite restaurant? Ristorante Il Bargello, a charming pizzeria across the Gucci Museo on Piazza della Signoria in Firenze, Italy. I have special dinner-date memories there. The last meal that truly impressed me? Freshly made wild-mushroom ravioli from Stelle Restaurant in Parkview. I love simple, classic Italian food. The one thing you will always find in my fridge? Boxes of Fry’s. I have been vegetarian for 13 years and I love Fry’s selection of vegetarian and vegan, cruelty free foods. The one indulgence I can’t live without? Dessert. My favourite fashion websites and blogs? The Coveteur, Kisua, Okayafrica, Fashion Gone Rogue, Shine by Three, Style Bubble, Ashley Ring My Bell, Song of Style,Tracee Ellis Ross, Man Repeller, Tales of Endearment, The Zoe Report, and Shine by Three. The last picture I took on my phone? My #ootd [outfit of the day] for Instagram.
