HIS BEAUTIFUL IMAGE of football legend turned peace activist Didier Drogba epitomises so much of what this edition of Wanted Watches, Jewellery and Luxury is all about: a return to elegant style with a touch of sporty chic – in this case Didier’s eyecatching Richard Mille watch. In my book there are few looks more eye-catching than a man dressed in a well-cut blazer or suit — teamed with super-cool sneakers. Wearing a sporty watch with a tailored look has the same effect. It’s the high-low combination that fashion has been doing for years, and jewellery is now officially part of the style action: diamonds in the daytime, an IWC Top Gun Pilot’s Watch with your dinner jacket. All these looks say: “I’m interesting. I have a life beyond this suit.” But more than that, this attitude also says, “I have work to do,” and there is hardly a luxury watch and jewellery brand that isn’t putting its name to incredible projects to make the world a better place. Monsieur Drogba himself is the vice president of non-profit organisation Peace and Sport, and he campaigns ceaselessly for peace and better living standards in his home country of Côte d’Ivoire. First, there are the incredible Rolex Awards for Enterprise as well as the brand’s recently launched campaign, Perpetual Planet. It’s a massive project, and one can only imagine the impact that Rolex has had in the 43-year history of these awards. But there’s more: Omega is actively supporting ocean conservation projects in Indonesia, a portion of sales of all Frédérique Constant Heartbeat watches go to heart health organisations, and Blancpain has set up The Protectors programme to have 30% of the earth’s oceans classified protected areas by 2030. The list of luxury brands supporting good work is endless. So, there’s actually a third reason to dress up and down this season — you’ll be investing in a better world too. Enjoy!

WJL EDITION 2019

A NASA-approved Omega Speedmaster Professional was the first watch worn on the Moon, and to mark this golden anniversary, the brand has released a collection of commemorative timepieces. As a tribute to the Speedmaster (BA145.022) that was presented to the astronauts at a special dinner in 1969, there is a spectacular 42mm Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Moonshine Limited Edition in 18kt Moonshine gold with touches of burgundy on its ceramic bezel ring. We also have the stainless steel Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition, which is a near-identical reedition of the early fourth-generation Speedmaster (ST105.012-65) worn on that lunar mission, with tonal grey-black dial and complementary gold

and black ceramic bezel. For die-hard fans of the Speedmaster, Omega has reintroduced the iconic Calibre 321 chronograph movement that powered the very first model launched in 1957. A modified version of the sought-after calibre also featured in the watch worn by Buzz Aldrin on the Moon, 50 years ago. Meticulously reconstructed, this intricate movement can be observed through the sapphire-crystal caseback on the new Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum (pictured), which is made from a special platinum and gold alloy, and features a black ceramic bezel with the Speedmaster’s famous tachymeter scale in white enamel. The onyx dial, with its contracting 18kt white-gold indexes and hands, has three subdials inset with real lunar meteorite.

TAG HEUER

The Heuer Monaco reference 1133B is a timeless classic, which is as contemporary looking today as it was futuristic back in 1969. This legendary square-faced chronograph with its familiar deep blue dial housed the revolutionary Calibre 11 “Chronomatic”, the very first automatic chronograph movement. All chronographs had been manual winding until the launch of the Calibre 11, which was produced in collaboration with Breitling, Buren, and movement makers Dubois-Depraz under the code name “Project 99”. Innovation in both design and technology immediately set the Monaco apart, with its unique case distinguishing it from any of the competition. It was also the first water-resistant square watch (to 100m) featuring a chronograph. TAG Heuer have a special commemorative series of five exclusive dial treatments lined up for the year, each limited to 169 pieces. Three of these have already been revealed and snapped up, each paying tribute to one of the five decades of Monaco, and of course are all powered by the renowned Calibre 11.

It’s been years since the moon landing — and some of the biggest brands in horology are also marking big milestones this year. We round up the special collections and editions supplied Gary Cotterell

T Original 1969 HEUER Monaco reference 1133B

HE SPACE RACE between Cold War rivals reached a pinnacle on 20 July 1969 with the Apollo 11 mission and those very first steps by humans on the Moon. The ’60s may have been dominated by war but at least ended with one the most inspiring engineering achievement of the last century, which also offered a distraction and time of reflecting on the turmoil back on Earth. Fifty years on, and the “race” continues, except now it’s between billionaire businessmen eager to send tourists into suborbital space. Construction on the Berlin Wall also began in the ’60s, reinforcing divisions and mistrust of “the others”, from Russians to aliens. Fuelled by the anti-Vietnam War movement, the civil rights movement, and general counterculture of the time, by the end of the ’60s, things got heated and served as a catalyst for events such as the LGBT riots at Stonewall, which also marks its 50th anniversary this year. Déjà vu? But let’s not forget other gamechanging achievements of that decade, like the first successful human heart transplant by our very own Christiaan Barnard or Mary Quant’s miniskirts.

WJL EDITION 2019

TUDOR

46

The much-loved Tudor brand was the Official Timekeeper of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Tudor also celebrates 50 years of its characteristic “snowflake” hands and large square-shaped hour markers, which first made an appearance on the second-generation Submariner diver’s watches in 1969. Around this time, the traditional Tudor rose logo was also replaced with the familiar shield.

TUDOR Pelagos

ZENITH Chronomaster El Primero

ZENITH EL PRIMERO

The revolutionary Zenith El Primero high-frequency chronograph featured the world’s first integrated, highly accurate, automatic chronograph movement, which had a frequency of 36 000 vibrations an hour (8 000 higher than most watches) and was capable of recording short times to 1/10th of a second. “El Primero” means “the first” in Spanish, and Zenith’s choice of dial colours for this legendary wristwatch set a trend with the combination of light grey, anthracite, and blue becoming one of its aesthetic codes. Anniversary releases include a collector’s trio of chronographs in a boxed set, limited to an edition of 50, which sold out immediately at R725 000 a set. In the trilogy was a reissue faithful to the first model, a Chronomaster El Primero with “optimised movement”, and the impressive Defy El Primero 21 with its contemporary 44mm titanium case and skeleton dial revealing the El Primero 9004 movement that beats inside at a remarkable 360 000 vibrations an hour. The 38mm “revival” watch is an exact laser-scanned facsimile of an original from the manufacture’s museum, except for an updated crown logo, open caseback, and power coming from an El Primero 400, the latest iteration of the El Primero column-wheel chronograph movement with a 50hour power reserve. The closest available model to the original 1969 Reference A386 is the 38mm Chronomaster El Primero “69 boutique edition” with Calibre 400 movement, with steel case on brown leather strap, or the 42mm with Calibre 400 B, for around R110 000.

In 1969, there was also a giant leap for the watch industry with competing brands racing to be first to market with their automatic chronographs. There is debate in some circles over who was first, as Heuer presented its Calibre 11 in the squarecased Monaco, and Zenith its superior El Primero, while on the other side of the planet Seiko may well have beaten them to it when it wowed local fans with its Calibre 6139. The fact that the chronograph is still the most beloved complication is a testament to our fascination with motor racing and recording speed, which inspired its development in the first place. The ’60s was also the dawn of the digital age. The futuristic metropolis of Tokyo, which continues to top all reputable “best cities in the world” lists, hosted the first non-Western country Summer Olympics in 1964 and will do so again next year. It was at this Olympic gathering that the Seiko Crystal Chronometer QC-951, a portable quartz timer, was used as a backup for marathons. This technology would eventually find its way into the Seiko Aston 35SQ, the world’s first quartz watch launched in 1969, marking the beginning of the quartz revolution. The company reportedly sold 100 gold models of the Astron in a week for R54 000 each, the price of a mid-sized car. The Astron was accurate to 0.2 seconds a day, five seconds a month, or one minute a year, and was the first of many to embrace the new technology. During the ensuing quartz crisis, all that work on mechanical complications may have seemed pointless, but the unrelenting dedication of the Swiss really paid off in the long run and now sets them apart. Although we appreciate the practicality and extreme accuracy of quartz, the tidal wave of interest in mechanical movements from younger consumers is a sure sign of shifting attitudes in an overly connected world.

BULGARI

THE ITALIAN JOB

“I

F I HAD MY WAY, I’D WEAR JEWELLERY, a great pair of heels and nothing else,” Jada Pinkett Smith has been quoted as saying. She could just as well have been Italian. We “don’t feel ready without jewellery. It’s part of the culture,” Françoise Izaute, director of the Diamond Information Center in Milan, told jskonline.com. The tradition of “la bella figura, or always putting one’s best face forward, makes Italian consumers extremely conscious of looking good. Italians are taught good grooming and elegant dress habits in their childhood; by the time they reach their 20s, they have a well-defined sense of individual style. This sense of style demands good, interesting design in jewellery.” “Good” and “interesting” feel like an understatement in the context of the renowned Made in Italy brand, lauded globally for design, creativity, craftsmanship, and excellent quality. Take Bulgari, for example. Established in Rome in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, the brand’s distinctive style features vibrant colours, exquisitely balanced volumes, and unmistakable motifs that pay homage to its Roman roots. And yet, Bulgari still keeps innovating by setting new trends in contemporary design. “It must be a mix,” says Bulgari creative director Lucia Silvestri. “We have a rich history of tradition as well as innovation. When creating new pieces, the designers must innovate without moving away from the brand’s aesthetic canons. We have always been at the forefront of design, yet our pieces can be considered timeless.”

ALLA FAMIGLIA The jewellery-making centres of Vicenza, Valenza, and Arezzo in northern Italy embrace a centuriesold affinity for fine jewellery and design excellence, often passed down through generations. “Valenza, a small city in the region of Piedmont, boasts the highest number of artisan gold and jewellery businesses in the country, as well as a solid high-quality artisan tradition and significant advancement in the way of technical, stylistic, and material innovation,” writes italia.it. Goldsmithery is one of the country’s important professions, and italia.it underscores that each region has its own traits and specialisations. Businesses are often family-run. Deeply rooted in the Valenza area, Moraglione dates back to 1922, when Massimo Moraglione began work as a jeweller. His sons, Marco and Pierino, contributed to the growth of the company through World War 2 and its aftermath: the boom and times of crisis and market evolution. Moraglione’s contemporary jewellery designs take inspiration from its history but are also influenced by fashion and taste. But for Moraglione, a jewel must supersede trends. A Moraglione piece is intended to be worn, not just as a simple accessory, but to accentuate femininity. Look out for these creations at Shemer Jewellers in Bedford Centre, Bedfordview, Johannesburg. Vicenza is home to the Fope family business, which set up its first workshop at the turn of the 20th century. It has a reputation for technical innovation. Its patented Flex’it system — a flexible mesh chain with tiny hidden gold springs between the links — can be found in almost all of the gold jewellery pieces Fope produces. The Love Nest collection is the newest in the Flex’it range. “Fope is one of the top brands to showcase Italian craft and skill,” says Christopher Greig of Charles Greig, which stocks this brand. “Their designs are elegant and sophisticated, yet casual and practical. Today, people want versatile jewellery that can be worn with black tie and on the beach.” One of the younger Italian jewellery brands is Nanis, which was established in 1990 by husband-andwife team Laura Bicego and Piero Marangan. “The ranges are eclectic and contemporary and bring out the true glitter of gold with soft textural cuts that are a trademark of Nanis quality and craftsmanship,” says Oresti Mavrodaris of Elegance Jewellers, which sells Nanis. “The pieces are expressive and resonate with stylish women who appreciate handmade luxury.” “All my jewels are designed to make every woman feel beautiful, radiant, and strong, because I think each of us should always feel that way,” says Laura Bicego, who also designs jewellery for Nanis. “Jewellery is a special and poetic language, which allows us to say important, sometimes even unusual things, about ourselves.” The famous maison founded by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana is relatively new to high jewellery. Following their successful launch of Alta Moda for women in 2012 and Alta Sartoria for men in 2014, the design duo realised that their customer — the global, successful connoisseur — wanted something more. “Each piece represents our small universe of creativity in which the invention of forms is accompanied by the rediscovery of time-honoured and rigorously Italian artisanal techniques,” they have written of their Alta Gioielleria (high jewellery in Italian) collections. “Gleeful exuberance is Dolce & Gabbana’s modus

operandi, and the Italian designers see no reason to tone it down when using precious gems,” writes Sarah Royce-Greensill for The Telegraph. “Their new finejewellery collection, Rainbow, scatters 31 gemstones around the neck with abandon: amethyst, topaz, tourmaline, peridot, beryl and quartz; a mishmash of cuts in colours that go from sky blue and lime green to sunset orange and Dairy Milk purple – and back again. Bangles, rings and hoop earrings are more orderly rainbows of precise princess-cut gemstones neatly contained between rails of gold.”

SUSTAINABLE SOURCING Italian luxury brands are some of the most sought after in the world, with many of them regularly appearing on the Global Powers of Luxury Goods top 100 list. LVMH, which owns Bulgari, has taken top spot this year, with luxury group Kering, which owns Gucci and fine fashion jeweller Pomellato, in fourth position. Gucci is particularly popular among millennials in Italy and recently launched its first collection of highend jewellery. Millennials are known to be sensitive to ethical practices, and jewellers hoping to attract them as buyers are insisting on using Fairmined or ethical gold, a 2019 report entitled Jewellery in Italy (see euromonitor.com) argues. In August, Kering was one of 32 global fashion and textile companies that signed a fashion pact committing to achieve practical objectives in three areas: climate, biodiversity, and oceans. The pact was presented to heads of state during the G7 meeting at Biarritz in August. “Ethical sourcing of raw material is an obligation,” says Vincenzo Castaldo, creative director for Pomellato. “One hundred percent responsible gold sourcing has been achieved in 2018, as well as for sustainable silver. Pomellato is actively working to build a traceable and transparent sourcing for diamonds through the collaboration with diamonds suppliers and is also developing an alliance with suppliers to investigate coloured stones’ traceability.” Pomellato prêt-à-porter (ready to wear) jewellery, now available in South Africa through leading luxury watch and jewellery distributors Picot & Moss, is crafted with the lost-wax-casting technique dating back to ancient Egypt and highly advanced machines. “Cutting stones to form new designs and reinventing details derived from the high-jewellery world in a contemporary way are essential parts of the Pomellato DNA,” Castaldo says. Pomellato’s goldsmith techniques are renowned and closely guarded. Among its most distinctive jewellery specialties is its masterful tradition with chains. Forged by hand, with perfect symmetry, Pomellato chains often intentionally contain different-sized links to add an asymmetrical playfulness, while they still manage to lie perfectly balanced on the neck or wrist. What are their bestsellers in SA? “The Nudo rings for sure, because coloured stones are so Pomellato, and everybody loves colour!” Castaldo says. Nudo is the Italian for “naked”, as the gem is naked in its splendour. “Nudo is our must-have, beloved by all generations for its great palette of colours and its very Milanese design. Women like it for its stackability and its original concept: an ironic way to play with a solitaire ring by choosing to mount a coloured stone instead of a diamond.”

SPACE AND GRACE

With the styling of a coupé, the space of a sedan, and the variability of an Avant, the Audi A7 Sportback combines the best of three worlds. The second generation of the Gran Turismo, which is to be launched in South Africa by the end of 2019, is the essence of Audi’s new design language in a large and visually striking four-door coupé. The exterior design embodies large surfaces and sharp edges with alternating light and shadows. The wide singleframe grille and prominent air scoops present a bold and edgy facade, while the pronounced wheel contours reference Audi’s quattro genes. HD Matrix LED headlights with 12 separate strips create a distinctive lighting signature, and are optionally available with Audi laser light technology. Creating visual drama at the rear is a light strip connecting the taillights, while a boot spoiler extends electrically at 100km/h. When the doors are unlocked or closed, the front and rear lights playfully display lighting animations. A futuristic lounge atmosphere greets you when you get in, in a clean and minimalistic setting that conveys airy spaciousness. The interior has grown compared to its predecessor, and the luggage compartment can expand from a spacious 535 to 1 390 litres. The cockpit offers a wide choice of colours, materials, and lighting. In addition to a digitised instrument panel, there are two large tablet-style infotainment screens on the dashboard, minimising the number of physical buttons needed. Operation is intuitive, like on a smartphone, and acoustichaptic feedback provides a tangible click to confirm activation of a function. The standard voice control recognises natural speech. For instance, you can say “I’m hot,” and the digital hostess asks what temperature you would like you would like within the cabin and sets it to your choice. Agile handling is combined with a wafting ride in Audi’s new Gran Turismo, especially with the optional adaptive air suspension fitted. Also available is all-wheel steering that combines direct steering with superior directional stability, making the A7 Sportback a car for all roads and conditions. A powerful 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine with 250kW supplies effortless cruising and overtaking power in the A7 Sportback. A 48V mild-hybrid system helps to keep fuel thirst down to 6.8 litre/100km.

The Audi A7 Sportback 55 TFSI quattro S tronic is priced at R1 250 000 and includes the standard fiveyear/100 000km Audi freeway plan.

AUDI Q8

WJL EDITION 2019

A DIGITAL-THEMED INDULGENCE

The Q8 was launched in South Africa as Audi’s new halo model in the Q range of SUVs. A vehicle that marries the elegance of a four-door luxury coupé with the practicality of a large SUV, it’s entwined with state-of-the-art technology and intelligent driver-assistance systems. The Q8 brings real style into the SUV segment with its self-confident look and dynamic coupé-like roofline. Its striking single-frame, octagonal grille is the new face of Audi’s Q family, and the Q8 also revives Audi heritage with geometric character lines inspired by the iconic Ur-Quattro rally car of the 1980s. An integrated light strip extends between the rear lights, accentuating the width of the Q8 and creating a distinctive presence at night. Filling the wheel arches are up to 22-inch wheels. The Audi Q8 features HD Matrix LED headlights as standard. These smart lights consist of an array of individually controlled LEDs that can turn off independently of one another, which allows driving permanently on high beam for maximum illumination of the road, without blinding other drivers. Optionally, the car can be ordered with night vision assist that uses an infrared camera to detect pedestrians and larger animals at greater distances than the naked eye. The Q8 has an exceptionally roomy cabin with stretch-out space for five adult passengers, and the three-seat system in the rear can slide forward and backward. With the rear seats folded down, the luggage hold expands to a cavernous 1  755 litres, and the boot is conveniently accessed by an electrically powered tailgate. The cabin blends elegance with a high-tech theme, including a digital instrument panel and two large touchscreens in the dash: one for climate control and the other for the infotainment system. The tablet-like MMI touch response display has a tactile click in a bid to make it feel more like pressing real buttons.

75

Theatrical lighting effects include headlights and taillights that flash when the vehicle is locked and unlocked. Ambient lighting enhances the premium feel inside the cockpit, where a selection of 30 different colours are available to brighten up the Q8’s futuristic interior. Audi’s SUV-coupé is geared for adventure on any surface with its quattro allwheel-drive system, which ensures grippy handling on both tar and gravel. Fourwheel steering can be optionally ordered to improve cornering agility. Also available is adaptive air suspension, which ensures sharp handling, plush ride quality (you’ll feel like you’re gliding over rough roads with finesse), and rockstraddling ground clearance of up to 254mm. The 3-litre V6 petrol turbo engine moves the large vehicle along with smooth and gutsy performance, while fuel-saving mild hybrid technology allows the Q8 to coast for long phases with the engine deactivated. The Audi Q8 55 TFSI derivative is available with outputs of 250kW and 500Nm, joined by the turbodiesel 45 TDI, with 183kW and 500Nm. The Q8 brims with technology, including driver-assist features such as lanedeparture warning and adaptive cruise control. The Audi Q8 55 TFSI quattro Tiptronic is priced at R1 388 000, and the Audi Q8 45 TDI quattro Tiptronic is priced at R1 439 000, which includes the five-year/100 000km Audi freeway plan.

Seven big movements we should be watching out for this year text

VINTAGE

There’s a wave of acute nostalgia in the world caused by growing uncertainty. With that, the vinyl revival and resurgence in popularity of film cameras are signs of our hunger for more tangible alternatives in this digital era. Vinyl is the “full-bodied” alternative to audio streaming, and pressings were also far more limited. In some cases, the sleeve art is as collectable as what’s inside. Film presents a much slower, more observed approach to using your smartphone or digital camera. With the vintage theme still prominent among watchmakers and popular with collectors this year, we are seeing even more editions that reference significant milestones. Featuring contemporary updates while retaining their old-school design appeal, among my favourites this year are the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Barakuda, Zodiac Limited Edition Aerospace GMT, the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition, Tudor Black Bay P01, Rado Captain Cook Automatic, and Seiko 1970 Diver’s Recreation SLA033. The secondary market continues to grow exponentially alongside, fed by this desire for a piece of the past. The Richemont Group leads the way, as big luxury manufactures enter the segment with certified pre-owned channels. Richemont acquired UK-based Watch Finder last year and is piloting a certification process supported by blockchain technology, showing just how serious it is about controlling the market. There will always be big watches, but small is gaining traction as the new big. This is driven by a number of factors, including the focus on women, practical watches for everyday wear, the development of thinner movements, and of course the revival of the classics from the ’50s and ’60s. According to a recent JW Thompson report, millennials are now actively seeking out “escapist purchases” as they head into their 30s, in an attempt “to recapture and prolong their youth”. By appealing to this nostalgia, luxury brands are seizing the opportunity to attract the generation’s growing luxury spend. The latest thing is retro gaming with the likes of Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Gucci releasing ’80s-inspired, lo-fi free games via their websites or apps.

With the watch industry looking more upbeat this year, brands are once again showing off their mechanical prowess — most notably with high complications such as the tourbillon. As one of the most prestigious complications, the tourbillon was out in full force with the eye-catching Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétuel with its ribbed chiming mechanism presenting a fine example. This is the latest generation of their multi-axis tourbillons with the added charm of the Big Ben chime. Reminding us of valuable time is the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime double face, reversible watch. This elegant white-gold piece is the manufacture’s most complicated yet, features a patented reversing mechanism, and no fewer than 20 complications, including five chiming modes, an acoustic alarm, and a date repeater.

The perpetual calendar is the complication to watch this year with even “accessible luxe” brand Baume & Mercier including one in its Clifton Baumatic collection. A perpetual calendar requires the exceptional skill of master architects to create the highly efficient and accurate movements that not only display date, day, month, and moon phases, but which automatically take account of the various lengths of the months and leap years. An exceptional example is the Vacheron Constantin Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar, the world’s first timepiece with two balances, allowing owners to switch between high-frequency “active mode” and low-frequency “standby” mode to extend the power reserve for up to 65 days. Vacheron has also introduced an update to its classically styled, ultra-thin Patrimony collection in a striking 41mm rose-gold case and midnight-blue dial combo — the fourth variation on its eight-yearold perpetual calendar — featuring the self-winding Calibre 1120 QP. The A.Lange & Söhne dial update to its Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon in salmon-pink gold is one of the most elegant releases this year. Although originally launched in 2016, it not only highlights the salmon-dial trend but also reminds us of its incredible Calibre L952.2 movement, which so very neatly integrates tourbillon, flyback chronograph, and perpetual calendar.

BRONZE

Bronze is the perfect alloy for a diver’s watch, as it doesn’t rust but also presents a rich, less conspicuous option to gold that will mark your passage of time with a rich patina developing the more you wear the watch. Inspired by Tudor diver’s watches from the 1950s, the striking 43mm Tudor Black Bay Bronze with its slate-grey bezel and dial was one of their best versions yet. IWC celebrates its historic links to the world of aviation and its first pilot’s watches dating back to 1936 — also the year that the iconic Spitfire took to the skies over Britain for the first time. IWC’s new Spitfire line, which also celebrates the IWC watches produced for the Royal Air Force from 1948, includes two designs in bronze inspired by the puristic instrument design of the Mark 11. The IWC Pilot’s Watch UTC Spitfire Edition “MJ271” second time zone display is dedicated to the Silver Spitfire — The Longest Flight project, which involves pilots Steve Boultbee Brooks and Matt Jones flying around the world in a Spitfire. MJ271 was the original call sign of the Silver Spitfire during its time of service. Ebel has also added a bronze version of its Discovery diver this year, with water resistance to 200m.

IDENTITY

Identity is the hottest topic right now as individuals, communities, and nations try to figure out who they are and where they fit in. From gender to national identity, whether you’re with them or not, everyone is proudly revealing their true colours. Personalisation will also set you apart from the crowd while sending a clear message on community allegiance. At the very top end, there are endless opportunities for customisation, limited only by the size of your bank account. However, customisation is also no longer the preserve of the rich, becoming more accessible to everyone online and having the potential to reduce large production runs and wasteful material usage by rather focusing on making based on demand. In the entry-to-middle market, this is mostly still limited to dial colour choices and interchangeable straps, now made more practical through ingenious new systems such as the Cartier QuickSwitch; but expect far more in the immediate future. Living Coral 16-1546 is Pantone’s colour for 2019, while millennial pink appears to be here to stay. The watch industry’s answer is salmon or rose-gold dials, the reserve of the super-luxe or limited editions in the past but looking like it might become a more familiar face. Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin is one of the most covetable. The Montblanc Heritage Spirit Pulsograph Limited Edition also features a beautifully executed update on a vintage Minerva chronograph. Variations on cool, calm, and confident blue is still a big favourite, as the main dial choice and embraced to the fullest as with the Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Blue. With the dawning of a new decade around the corner, we welcome more playful colours that instil a feeling of confidence and joy after the last few years of uncertainty and upheaval. From large shimmering yellow diamonds at Graff to cyan, magenta, and yellow at Hublot, it’s all about reducing stress and reintroducing playfulness in your world. In celebration of the great outdoors, green seems to dominate as the new colour trend. It made an appearance last year already in the Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Limited Edition and this year in its accessibly priced 1858 Automatic, as well as a new chronograph and Geosphere in bronze dedicated to the Seven Summits challenge. IWC’s new Spitfire line of Pilot watches has a number of its models presented in bronze with green dials — also offering some consumer-friendly pricing.

Watch brands also know a thing or two about weathering a crisis. And, as a report by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie puts it, they “are also toughening up their watches in the face of adversity”, making sure their timepieces don’t miss a beat under extreme conditions. Apart from shock resistance and tougher shells, brands are once more entering into partnerships rooted in human endeavour, expeditions to unexplored territory, or endurance in sport. Beyond marketing and feel-good factor, the more conscientious brands can proudly celebrate their growing commitment to transparency, social upliftment, and environmental protection. Where and how you spend your money says a lot about you, and we will see more brands responding to the call. Breitling, for example, participates in Ocean Conservancy programmes, and on some of its Superocean Heritage pieces includes Nato straps made from Econyl yarn, a material repurposed from nylon waste. Chopard leads the way in electing to only process ethical gold, Rolex has its Awards for Enterprise and Deepsea Challenge, and Oris is saving the oceans through its work with the Oceans Project and more sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. The 39.5mm Oris Clean Ocean Limited Edition is based on the Aquis diver’s watch and made in partnership with Pacific Garbage Screening, a pioneering young organisation developing technology to capture plastic before it enters the ocean.

What could be more ’80s than the Rolex Two Tone Datejust 16013 with beautiful tapestry dial and Jubilee bracelet, which featured prominently in American Psycho? Although it represented one of many fine indulgences of the yuppie ’80s, two-tone watches are finding new favour among those on the nostalgia trip. They also present a less ostentatious alternative to all gold, and a smart update to a traditional all-steel sports timepiece. This year, Rolex introduced the first Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea‑Dweller in yellow Rolesor gold and Oystersteel. And as a more accessibly priced sibling to a two-tone Cosmograph Daytona, the distinguished Tudor Black Bay Chrono S&G has all the great attributes to top my list. Ebel also has some elegant two-tone updates to its iconic Sport Classic range for men and women with the familiar wave bracelet, which adorned the wrist of tennis champ Boris Becker in the 1980s.

PATEK PHILIPPE

Watch Art Grand Exhibition

It’s not often one of the most exclusive watch brands in the world comes out to play, but Singapore watch connoisseurs recently enjoyed an unprecedented showcase of Patek Philippe watches at the Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore 2019 — the largest showcase ever presented by this luxury brand. In 10 theme rooms across 1 800m2 of floor space, visitors immersed themselves in the world of Patek Philippe as if they were personally visiting the watch brand’s historic salons on Rue du Rhône in Geneva, the manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, or the Patek Philippe Museum itself. It was a unique opportunity to take a backstage look into the last independent, familyowned watchmaking manufacture and the first time that such a large number of timepieces had left the museum in Geneva. The exhibition was also used to launch several limited-edition watches and a collection of rare handcrafts inspired by the cultural and artistic traditions of the countries in the Asian region.

LANGE 1 25th Anniversary

WORLD’S FINEST WATCHES

A classic is back. The Ebel Sport Classic, with its distinctive wave bracelet, has been revived and is more glamorous than ever. Available from Boutique Haute Horlogerie V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

The CEO of A.Lange & Söhne, Wilhelm Schmid is a regular visitor to South Africa and spoke to us about the combination of tradition and innovation in the Lange 1. “It remains our bestselling watch 25 years after it launched. Back then, the Lange 1 was a revolutionary design, with the outsized date display and the decentralised dial. Then, 38mm was rather large for a wristwatch — today it hits the sweet spot. “We don’t have a genius that comes out with an idea. It’s usually a team process. I think Günter Blümlein was strongly involved in the design of the Lange 1, but it was always Walter Lange who came with the bridge to history and asked: ‘What can we do to make this the natural progression from our pocket watches?’ “Mr Blümlein pushed the boundaries and said it had to be distinctive; nobody needed another three-handed watch with a normal date. That’s where he was very clever, and that’s why the watch is still admired by many people, young or old. Young people like it because it looks like a contemporary design. Many people say it is a classic design. “It’s all about the details. One of the key features of the Lange 1 25th Anniversary is the blue colour, which we very rarely use. Usually we have indices made out of the same metal as the case, but on this watch, they are printed. We structured the dial slightly differently to the normal one, which gives it a three-dimensional view, and we don’t use a normal case. We used a half hunter’s case — that means you can open the back. So, you have enough space to engrave, which we have done to honour Mr Blümlein and Mr Lange. If you open it, you will see the movement.”

Specialist watch boutique World’s Finest Watches has reopened its doors after extensive renovations — setting a stylish new benchmark for luxury watch emporiums. Located in Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, Shop L52 showcases leading international watch brands as well as men’s accessories, watch boxes, writing instruments, and more. Rolex, Zenith, Hublot, Tag Heuer, Longines, Tudor, Mont Blanc, Frédérique Constant, Rado, Hamilton, and Tissot are some of the watch brands available at the store, as well as accessories from Montblanc, Hoxton, and Rapport.

BLACK BAY PO1 BY TUDOR

Tudor watches’ head designer, Ander Ugarte, introduces the Black Bay P01, a watch based on a legendary prototype developed in the 1960s for the US Navy and lifts the veil on a little-known aspect of this unique watch’s history. “The Black Bay P01 is my favourite — it is so unique and different, particularly because of the story behind it. We are fortunate to have a big patrimony department at Tudor with a huge collection of our vintage watches. We found the P01 prototype, the original one, in a special tray just labelled ‘prototypes’. It did not look interesting at all. “When they opened the tray, I asked: ‘What is this?’ and then I added: ‘This is incredible! We have to do something with this!’ “We started working on this project two years ago. Sometimes it’s a good thing to go a little bit slowly: to design something, to try something and then to let it rest for a while and then to look back at the project a few months later. It allows you to change and improve things and try different approaches. The P01 is a clear example of that. “We started thinking about it and trying drawings, making 3D prints of models, and then trying first prototypes until we reached the final watch. “Technically, placing the crown at four o’clock is not complicated. It was a very important design feature inspiration from the original prototype. It’s also functional; when you bend your wrist, you don’t feel the crown. Access is also easier. “I don’t think this was really a diving watch at the origin. It is more a technical watch for the Navy people who are working on the boats, not only for divers. “We could see there was a lot of interest and research all around the bezel. Maybe it was a technical part that had problems at that time, and they wanted to improve the technique and servicing of the bezel at that time. “You can’t find anything like this in any of the other watch brands. For me, it was very important to bring something different with this watch: the spirit of a prototype, the spirit of a concept watch. So here it is, and I think it is really interesting. Everyone who has tried it on has been seduced by it.”

THE ARTIST’S WAY Six South African artists created the designs of this new collection of coins from The South African Mint to commemorate 25 years of constitutional democracy

T

Clockwise: Gold coin launch set: 1oz gold coin + silver medallion, 8-coin set: 6 circulation coins, 1 silver R50 and 1 bronze alloy R50 coin, 9-coin set: 6 circulation coins, 1 R500 24ct gold, 1 R50 silver and 1 R50 bronze alloy coin

HE SIX YOUNG SOUTH African artists involved in the design of the newest coin collection from The South African Mint range from sculptors to tattoo artists. By involving the youth in the SA25 coin programme, the South African Mint aims to reinvigorate a sense of national pride — mirroring the concept of democracy “for the people, by the people”. The SA25 coin collection commemorates a significant milestone in South Africa’s recent history: 25 years since the first democratic elections and the beginning of constitutional democracy in the country. The designs of the new coins reflect concepts that everyday South Africans regard as significant about the new democracy. In the 12 months leading up to the 25th anniversary, born-frees across major cities were asked what democracy and freedom meant to them. The themes (i.e. the Constitution, the right to vote, and freedom of choice and expression, etc.) and symbols and images (i.e. the green ID book, the minibus taxi, and multi-coloured hands) identified through these consultations were translated into designs featured on the coins. The creative process involved six independent artists, including painters, illustrators, sculptors, and even a tattoo artist, who were tasked with interpreting the themes into designs for a new coin collection. The outcome of this project was the introduction of three new collectable coins in gold, silver, and bronze, and five new R2 circulation coins, depicting five different rights in the Bill of Rights, as well as a new R5 circulation coin featuring the design of a ballot box and a long queue, reminiscent of South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994.

THE SIX NEW COMMEMORATIVE CIRCULATION AND THREE COLLECTABLE COINS ARE Circulation coins (freely available in circulation and a collectable six-coin set available for purchase) • R2 CHILDREN’S RIGHTS by Neo Mahlangu was inspired by the diverse faces of South Africa’s children and capturing their joy and innocence. • R2 RIGHT TO EDUCATION by Neo Mahlangu depicts education at different levels, from the most basic level (depicted through the “ABC” block, to tertiary level education represented by the graduation cap and, lastly, the image of the classic open book, which is synonymous with learning at any level. • R2 ENVIRONMENTAL RIGHTS by Maaike Bakker has an elaborate design that celebrates diverse natural elements, from the sun to the land and the ocean. • R2 RIGHT TO MOVEMENT AND RESIDENCE by Rasty Knayles commemorates the freedom enjoyed by all citizens to travel, live, and work anywhere in South Africa. Prominent symbols of movement and transportation in South Africa are depicted on this coin: the notorious minibus taxi against a city backdrop, an aeroplane, and a bird in flight gripping a key (representative of opportunity). • R2 FREEDOM OF RELIGION, BELIEF, AND OPINION by Peter Mammes cleverly portrays different hand gestures on four raised hands, to represent this right.

• R5 LET US LIVE AND STRIVE FOR FREEDOM by Lady Skollie portrays a long winding queue leading to a ballot box, which is inspired by images of the long queues in the first democratic election of 1994. Collectable coins (only available for purchase from the South African Mint or a number of retail outlets) • R50 BRONZE-ALLOY: WE THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH AFRICA by Peter Mammes depicts two hands entwined as a sign of unity. The words “We, the people” are the opening words of the Constitution of South Africa. • R50 STERLING-SILVER: 25 YEARS OF CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY by Lady Skollie bears the design of a winding queue of San-inspired figures and was inspired by reflecting on how long people hoped for a better future. • R500 1oz 24kt GOLD: CONSTITUTIONAL COURT by Shaun Gaylard bears the design of the Constitutional Court building, a distinguished landmark in Johannesburg and a true symbol of the pinnacle of the third branch of government: the judiciary. samint.co.za or sa25.co.za

MEGA HAS CREATED an ultra-light watch, weighing in at just 55g, aimed specifically at athletes. Shedding weight did not reduce the watch’s performance. On the inside, the Ultra Light is driven by Omega’s first-ever titanium movement. All the bridges and the main plate are in ceramised titanium, which means there’s less friction between the components, and it gives the movement this special dark-grey colour. Behind the development of Omega’s latest Master Chronometer was one of golf’s major talents — Rory McIlroy. “I’m proud to have played a role in the development of Omega’s new lightweight sports watch,” he says. “I know what an athlete needs in a watch, and through collaboration with Omega, we were able to modify the timepiece. The new Ultra Light is an absolute pleasure to wear, whatever sport you play.” The Ultra Light case, case back, and crown are fashioned from an alloy called gamma titanium — a first for Omega. The unique material, used in the aeronautical industry due to its very resistant properties, is harder and lighter than conventional titanium. Another first for Omega is the convenient telescopic crown, which can be stowed inside the case when not in use. Designed to prevent glare from the sun, Omega’s matt-finished Aqua Terra makes bold use of colour on the aluminium seconds hand, Seamaster logo, quarter hour indexes, and strap stitching. Each Ultra Light is presented on a rubber strap but comes with an inplay fabric strap. The watch is available in red, green, and blue.

The watch is limited to 7 007 pieces and features a black-onblack ceramic dial with a spiral-brushed gun-barrel design and 9mm bullet head at the centre. A gold plate on the side of the case is engraved with each unique limited-edition number. Omega has been worn on the wrist of James Bond since GoldenEye in 1995, when the spy was first seen on screen wearing his own Seamaster Diver 300m.

RAHIM RAWJEE

One of Egoli’s best-known tailors recently set up a new studio in the Rand Club

How old is the Van Deijl workshop? Our first “on-thepremises” workshop dates back to 1989, and since then we have always had a workshop on the premises of all our stores. In 2015 we upgraded our store in the Tygervalley Centre to include a new state-of-the-art workshop, complete with a laser welding machine, a laser engraving machine, and a gold X-ray machine. Why does Van Deijl choose to manufacture its own designs? Van Deijl strives to be unique by creating exceptional and interesting designs, with a style that is true to the brand. We are passionate about ensuring outstanding quality and strongly identify with the beauty of manufacturing an exquisite design as a form of art. Being hands-on throughout the entire process of manufacturing a jewellery piece aids Van Deijl in guaranteeing outstanding quality at all times. This includes the quality of the precious metals and gems used. How does South African craftsmanship compare to the rest of the world? In the high-end jewellery industry, South African craftsmanship compares very well with the rest of the world. Van Deijl goldsmiths and artisans are very well trained with years of experience in the industry. We are well steeped in tradition but also excited about new developments in the industry. The traditional approach will always have a place in the industry, especially for customers who attach a deeper emotional value to a jewellery piece, with a desire to use the original raw materials (in particular the gold) in a new design — a request that 3D printing and casting cannot accommodate. Is all design work handled in-house? Yes, we do all our own designs with the aim to make every design, regardless of its complexity or simplicity, a unique piece of art. An annual collection is launched every spring and is always a cause for great celebration after months of hard work by a very dedicated team. Can customers ask for bespoke designs? We take great pride in designing bespoke pieces for individual clients. Clients are invited to make an appointment with any Van Deijl designer to discuss ideas and collaborate on a very personal creation, either using their own stones or choosing from our collection. Stones with unique specifications can also be sourced, using only reputable suppliers with very high ethical values. Items can be designed both on paper and/or by using sophisticated 3D computer software. How long does it take to have a bespoke ring designed and made? Approximately three weeks from the first design meeting to presenting a beautifully crafted final product. In exceptional circumstances we have, however, been known to make a ring in a timeframe of one day to a week. What is the current trend in high-end jewellery? Simplicity! The idea of less is more has had a very positive influence on the high-end industry. Which gemstone is currently most in demand? Morganite, topaz, and tourmaline are currently very popular, with diamonds continuing to be the all-time favourite due to their exceptional and unmatched properties.

Why the Rand Club? The decision was founded on an inherent alignment in values, ethos, and philosophy. I wanted a space that reflected the same rich and intricate approach we take to fashion, somewhere with heritage and gravitas. It very quickly became clear that the coming together of both our brands was a match made in sartorial heaven. Does tailoring ever go out of fashion? How can the luxury of having something made to your exacting requirements, according to your personal predilections, tastes, and desires go out of fashion? Craftsmanship doesn’t go out of fashion; neither does impeccable fit and classic styling. Is the suit having a moment right now? Fashion goes through a life cycle of contraction and expansion, peaks and valleys — one day it’s cool to wear a suit, the next day it’s not. I find that absurd. A suit is like armour — it appeared in the 17th century and again in the 19th, and all the way up to present day. It exudes confidence, and an impeccably crafted Row-G suit will be a life-long friend. To schedule a private appointment call 011 870 4260 or email clientservices@row-ginternational.com

Locally designed by American Swiss in collaboration with Johan Louw, a world-renowned Cape Town jewellery designer, Buhle is the name of the new Miss South Africa crown. The name Buhle was inspired by ubuhle uthingo lenkosazana, which means “the beauty of a rainbow” and was chosen as a celebration of women, cultural diversity, and our rainbow nation. Buhle is handcrafted in premium 925 sterling silver and features over 2 500 fine-cut cubic zirconia stones of the highest grade, which were hand cut and set by master diamond cutters and have a total weight of 182ct. In addition to winning the most coveted crown in the country, Tunzi took home close to R3-million in prizes. OCEAN FLOWER When you look into the Ocean Flower diamond from the culet, the bottom-most point on a gemstone, you’ll see the most beautiful flower, which appears to be moving. You might even think it’s radiating. Turn it over, and you’ll find a star, shaped by heart and arrow cuts coaxed from the rough stones. The women behind this remarkable new diamond from American Swiss shine as brightly as their creation. American Swiss had been looking for local partners to create a special cut for some time, and when the team met sisters Jo Mathole and Khomotso Ramodipa, the directors of Kwame Diamonds, it was a match made in jewellery heaven. The idea to produce a 67-facet diamond came about because of the link to the Mandela legacy and The Foschini Group’s work with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The stones selected for the 67-facets special cut are sourced through the state-owned diamond mine Alexkor, which operates in Alexander Bay in the Northern Cape. Kwame employs 10 people in the factory, mostly women, who boast combined experience of more than two decades in the industry. Available on request.

Her career success as a curator and creator of once-in-a-lifetime bespoke events is living proof that this is the era of expressing yourself and your personality through the bespoke side of your life. Thamaga recently got married to Sifiso Mazibuko, the managing and creative director of Master Suit, a madeto-measure tailor based in Johannesburg that offers its clients bespoke luxury suits, shoes and shirts. It stands to reason that when it came to their wedding rings, Thamaga and Mazibuko sought out the ultimate bespoke experience. The duo opted for the American Swiss bespoke service, as this allowed them to design every element of their rings, from the perfect size down to the colour of the stones. Mazibuko says they were able to design the rings to suit their budget and, in the end, their rings have a sentimental value. She notes that there was just as much detail involved in designing the groom’s ring as the bride’s. “Sifiso’s ring is so unique and such a complement to his personality and love for bespoke, tailored suits. The designers at American Swiss have come up with the most bespoke groom’s ring I have seen in a long time.”

WHEN IT COMES TO I DO

Sifiso Mazibuko’s ring is a modern take on the traditional wedding band. The rose gold and black diamonds symbolise charisma and power

Precious Tumisho Thamaga’s ring is a romantic vintage design, and the ring’s sky-blue topaz is enhanced by the delicate embrace of rose gold and diamonds, representing eternal romance and friendship

DESIGN YOUR OWN RING If you would like to experience American Swiss’ bespoke design service, you can set up a private consultation via e-mail bespokedesign@tfg.co.za or on the website americanswiss.co.za, preferably two months before you need your jewellery delivered. American Swiss’ in-house design team, in consultation with a master goldsmith and qualified gemologist, will guide you through the journey of crafting your ultimate piece of jewellery using precious metals, diamonds, and gemstones.

HI-TECH

S HISTORY HAS SHOWN us, innovation is at the core of the watchmaking industry, with many revolutionary models and movements being celebrated this year. This is the stuff that keeps our attention, that of loyal customers and millennial newcomers. With the industry having bounced back from the global economic slump, there was a sense of confidence in the air at Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie and Baselworld. While there are many highly respected manufactures producing impressive high complications, the future of watchmaking is beating at high frequency at Zenith in the Defy Inventor. This is a watch that catapults the brand into the 21st century with the evolution of the silicon Zenith Oscillator, first seen in the Defy Lab — the recipient of the 2017 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève “Innovation Watch Prize”. The Inventor is the “commercialised” version of the Defy Lab, with its revolutionary new single component incorporating the functions of the balance wheel, balance spring, and lever. The Calibre ZO9100 with its new regulating organ is the fastest, most accurate mechanical movement around, running at an incredible 18-hertz or 129 600 vibrations per hour, which is four times faster than the average watch. “Watchmakers tend to repeat the past. Proudly showing off their ‘new’ complications at the fairs,” says Zenith CEO Julien Tornare. “As a Swiss national, I can say that Swiss watchmaking tends to return to the past, repeats the past, doing again and again the same things. Often the excuse from the brands with a long history is that they have to respect the past.

“Think about the perpetual calendar and the tourbillon, or even a nice simple mechanical watch. Is it respectful to do the same as people did 50 or 100 years ago with very basic tools and only their hands? Today all the brands have computer assistance and 3D simulation — much better tools and machines. If all we do is the same thing, we are not respecting them,” says the dynamic Tornare, throwing down the gauntlet. The man leading the innovation is Guy Sémon, CEO of the TAG Heuer Institute and director of the Research Institute for the Watch Division of the LVMH Group, which includes TAG, Zenith and Hublot. Sémon’s task at the institute is to “improve the fundamental physics of watchmaking” with a team coming from diverse fields such as mathematics and physics. In a most inspiring one-on-one with him at Baselworld this year, I learnt about the carbon nanotube forests growing in his labs, which form the 4mm carbon composite micro hairspring (or balance spring). We also talked about the Calibre 5 movement of the spectacular Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T Tourbillon Nanograph. This technology has many benefits, including high shock resistance, perfect balance, and a thermal behaviour. Sémon believes that innovation is about looking beyond updates to case materials and rather focusing on the mechanics of a watch. The same enthusiasm for the new is echoed by Tornare. “Just because you are a 154-year-old brand, doesn’t mean you have to behave or dress like an old person,” he says, referring to the Zenith Oscillator as not only a symbol of the path he is on but as a statement on the future of watchmaking. Authenticity is the new luxury,” but for the future of watchmaking

“Is it respectful to do the same as people did 50 or 100 years ago with very basic tools and only their hands? If all we do is the same thing, we are not respecting them” — Zenith CEO Julien Tornare

PREVIOUS PAGE TAG HEUER TAG HEUER Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T Tourbillon Nanograph ZENITH Defy Inventor he believes that this involves far more than heritage to remain relevant. “Authenticity also means that you stay true to who you are. For example, Zenith is not going to do a connected watch. We will stick to chronometry and precision because this is our DNA. However, all of this doesn’t mean that we need to be old fashioned and dusty. We have the right to express ourselves in a very contemporary way. So, we are authentic but expressive. Think out of the box.” Another ground-breaking piece from the LVMH stable is the faceted Bulgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic. Magnificently architectural in form, this is the ultimate super-light and elegant daily wearer for any globetrotter. Its wafer-thin movement and case design set a fifth world record for Bulgari this year as the thinnest automatic chronograph in the world. On the fringe, the “young” independents never fail to impress, with brands like Ressence and its “beyond hands” approach to reading time. Here, analogue and digital collide in the hybrid watch of the future. Designed in consultation with Tony Fadell, who created the original iPod, the Type-2 e-Crown is the world’s first self-setting mechanical watch. Its innovative “E-crown” is an electronic component that also monitors the position of the mechanical hands for time accuracy.

WJL EDITION 2019

As consumers we have the power to vote with our wallets, and what we wear says a lot about what we represent as individuals. With the dire state of our oceans and concern for the environment front of mind for any conscientious brand or consumer, dive watches seem even more prominent by association this year. As appealing as many are for their “vintage” tool references and the growing interest in mechanical watches from younger collectors, we are seeing a lot more inclusion of recycled materials and innovation in this category. Panerai’s Mike Horn-endorsed 47mm Submersible Eco-Titanium uses recycled titanium. Its stealth-bomber-black Carbotech LABID Luminor 1950, introduced in 2017, combines traditional watchmaking with hi-tech materials, demonstrating the true ability of Panerai Laboratorio di Idee, the company’s research and development centre. Panerai also claim to have changed the rules of maintenance by using carbon composites for almost all the components. The result is a watch that is not only impressively lightweight and scratchresistant, but one that has also eliminated the need for liquid lubrication. Panerai has also partnered with Luna Rossa, the Challenger of Record for the 36th edition of the America’s Cup in 2021. Its large Panerai Submersible Luna Rossa with GMT function has a case and unidirectional rotating bezel made from lightweight and scratch-resistant Carbotech — used in the manufacture of the hull of Luna Rossa’s AC75 — while all dials are made from recycled sails from the yacht. The Breitling SuperOcean Heritage Ocean Conservancy Limited Edition was launched with the support of its world champ “Surfer Squad” of Kelly Slater, Sally Fitzgibbons, and Stephanie Gilmore. Working with Ocean Conservancy, Breitling organised a beach clean-up with hundreds of volunteers for the launch of the chronograph and to highlight its participation in the conservation group’s programmes to ensure the future health of the oceans. Completing the special edition are striped and plain-blue pairs of satin Nato straps made from Econyl yarn, a material repurposed from nylon waste, such as abandoned fishing nets. The 39.5mm Oris Clean Ocean Limited Edition, based on its Aquis diver’s watch, features a unique recycled plastic medal inserted into the caseback made in partnership with Pacific Garbage Screening, a pioneering young organisation that is developing technology to capture plastic before it enters the ocean. Baume is “focused on a design-led global conversation”, with customisation and mindful design — in both material choices and sustainable production techniques — at its core. While Baume draws on the expertise and 188-year heritage of its mother company, Baume & Mercier, its fully customisable timepieces are not only on-trend but also ahead of the curve. Straps are made from environment-friendly materials, such as cork, linen, cotton, and Alcantara. Baume has also partnered with Waste Free Oceans, a non-governmental organisation that transforms ocean plastic into innovative products. The company is sponsoring the Material Futures master’s degree at Central Saint Martins in London.

OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Moonshine Limited Edition

RADO Captain Cook Automatic IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun

In the past, only a handful of brands created their own materials in an effort to create tougher and lighter cases. Today, a new proprietary alloy sets them apart as much as a new design or complication. Fashions also change, and gold is given new life this year. Rolex was a pioneer with the 2005 release of a Daytona in Everose, an 18kt pink gold made from gold, copper, and a little platinum and guaranteed to never lose its warm red colour. Omega introduced Ceragold in 2013, a material that blends ceramic and 18kt gold, and this year revealed the spectacular Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Moonshine Limited Edition in its new 18kt Moonshine gold that is warmer than yellow gold and also more resistant to fading. The new Panerai Submersible 42mm is presented in Goldtech, made with a percentage of copper that gives the material a richer red, “strikingly modern” hue. This metal also contains platinum, which prevents oxidising. Leave it to the fashion set to start a new trend. There’s mounting competition from luxury fashion brands for a place on the wrists of women who appreciate fine watchmaking. Highlighted by pieces such as the Chanel J12 or the Dior Grand Bal, it was inevitable that ceramic would

have its moment. Rado is famous for innovative design and its use of revolutionary materials. It led the way, from its Hardmetal Rado DiaStar 1, released in 1962, to new plasma high-tech ceramic watches such as the HyperChrome Tennis Automatic Chronograph. The latter is crafted from Ceramos, a marriage of high-tech ceramic and metal. The strength, scratch-, and corrosion-resistant properties of lightweight ceramic has made it an attractive, practical alternative for other watch brands seeking to push boundaries with new materials better suited to contemporary lifestyles. The new IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun is made from Ceratanium, a matte black composite that combines the advantages of titanium and ceramic. The base material for Ceratanium is a special titanium alloy, which through a furnace process turns the surface of the metal into ceramic. Tudor’s contribution to the Only Watch charity auction in November was the stealth one-off matte black ceramic-cased Black Bay Ceramic One. If you’re looking to explore new territories, Rado’s new 42mm Captain Cook Automatic is based on an original diver’s from 1962. Initially brought back to life in 2017 through a near identical reproduction as the 39mm Captain Cook HyperChrome, the new edition is a modern take, featuring a matte-finished metal case and ceramic bezel in soft grey, green, and navy, with matching dials.

ROM HOUSEHOLD NAMES to private collections, when it comes to luxury parfumerie, you can easily draw comparisons with the rarefied world of haute couture. The attention to detail and meticulous material sourcing that go into fragrance-making contribute to the nuanced and unique olfactory structures that we see on fragrance shelves today. Luxury fragrance houses such as Chanel, Dior, and Bulgari are known for being some of the key custodians of haute parfumerie, using some of the world’s rarest and most expensive ingredients to create their scents. The process from raw material to finished scent is the culmination of exclusive partnerships, tradition, geography, and meticulous ingredient quality control, carefully monitored by perfumers. The sourcing of thousands of flowers, and petals or kilos of wood is all done by hand.

ROSE Rose as an ingredient is much loved by luxury brands and is used in everything from fragrances to decadent creams. From Narciso Rodriguez to Dior, rose has been spotted in men’s and women’s fragrances for its ability to be light and feminine or contribute a rich, nuanced quality — especially to scents for him. “You can get different emotions from a rose because you can get something romantic or delicate as a petal,” says Parfums Christian Dior fragrance ambassador and training manager Nevine Thiermann. “You can also get something very sensual, warm, or deep and enveloping. Basically, it’s the different way you will treat the flower. Either you obtain an essence that will give you the sensation of romance, or you can obtain an absolute, where you will smell more of the heart of the flower.” TUBEROSE We all know that creamy, enigmatic, enveloping floral texture in a scent, as sensed in Amouage’s elegant women’s fragrance, Love Tuberose — that’s the magic of tuberose. It’s also been a key fragrance ingredient of the house of Chanel for 32 years, and through an exclusive partnership, the tuberose quality is carefully controlled and one-ofa-kind. “In 2011, Chanel offered to buy the bulbs from the last tuberose producer in Grasse and replant them to preserve the cultivation of the flower,” says Chanel perfumer-creator Olivier Polge. “We have thus developed our own quality of tuberose in close collaboration with the Mul family.” Chanel’s partnership with this flower-farming family from Grasse “provides a guarantee of the olfactory quality and the quantity of flowers required for the production of certain Chanel fragrances, as well as perfect control over the process from flower to fragrance,” Polge says. PATCHOULI It is evident that the house of Dolce & Gabbana favours a scent rounded off by patchouli. As a popular ingredient used in most fragrances today, it’s what gives fragrances such as Dolce & Gabbana The Only One 2 and K By Dolce & Gabbana their warm, earthy quality and allows even the sweetest floral fragrances to settle elegantly on the skin. Originating from Indonesia, patchouli was used to protect silk from moths and damage while being transported by merchants from China to Europe to sell on to the rich and famous. “So, by the time they arrived in Europe, you can imagine that the smell of the patchouli was impregnated in the silk,” Thiermann says. “Of course, they sold this material to the royal family and the aristocrats, who made beautiful outfits. So, when people saw them, they looked so elegant, and they smelt so elegant. This is how patchouli became very much linked to elegance.”

SUBLIME SENSUALITY If you loved Narciso EDP Rouge, you will be equally excited by the intoxicating new addition to the Narciso line — Narciso EDT Rouge. With a radiant and airy scent, Narciso EDT Rouge explores the mysterious and sometimes magical nature of attraction and becomes the perfect counterpart to the intensely seductive Narciso EDP Rouge. The Narciso line’s signature duality and passion are made whole with the refinement and discreet drama of Narciso EDT Rouge that reinterprets a woman’s power of seduction. The juice is made more vibrant and incandescent as the signature musc heart note is now wrapped in a floral bouquet of lily of the valley and roses, while warm woody notes of tonka bean and black and white cedars round off its olfactory composition. The new bottle also plays its part in depicting the mystery and magic of the scent with a transparent glass cube painted with a vibrant red that emanates from within. The iconic Narciso rectangular topper is now translucent to emphasise the elements of mystery, artistry, and architecture.

Fragrance aficionados will fall in love with the sheer luxury of two new cult fragrances launching this summer: Love Mimosa by Amouage and Winter Palace by Memo

1983, Amouage is an international luxury fragrance house. Devoted to creating finely blended sophisticated perfumes with the highest quality of ingredients sourced worldwide, Amouage brings artistry to perfumery with an incomparable distinction. Original and evocative, Amouage perfumes are created with internationally recognised perfumers in Paris, New York, Geneva and Grasse in the South of France. The comforting scent of Amouage Love Mimosa is created by the green and watery accents of violet leaves and cascalone. Orris and heliotrope flowers reinforce the creamy and powdery effects, and juicy pear introduces a breeze of light modernity. And finally, the addictive touches of ylang-ylang and ambrox ensure a sensual finish to each spritz of Love Mimosa. The pastel-lemon Love Mimosa bottle is topped with a gleaming Swarovski aurore boreale crystal, echoing the delicate luxury of the fragrance inside. ounded in

more modern-day story of fragrance luxury is that of Memo in Paris, where husband-and-wife team John and Clara Molloy see fragrance as a journey, forging its identity around magical destinations and potent raw materials. In the Art Land collection, they pay tribute to mysterious territories transformed by the artistic hand of humankind, and the newest launch, Winter Palace, is a fresh and spicy scent inspired by the hypnotic energy of China. The first impression of Winter Palace is of fresh bergamot and oil of orange. Once the freshness settles, a red tea accord rises with a spicy and warming sensation. This creates a trail of fiery warmth and powdery amber tones. Inspired by the drama of a Chinese castle, the black lacquered bottle is dressed in a dragon — a symbol of power and good luck.

HE ONE INDULGENCE you’d never forgo? Getting a massage — some masseuses are magicians, I swear. A massages fixes my body, my mind, and my soul. They always allows me to reset, to heal, and to breathe. Apart from eating healthily and working out, massages are one of the only things that really make me feel whole and strong. What tech gadget couldn’t you live without? The phone is a hard one not to pick. I know so many people talk about all this technology making us anti-social, but I think in my case it’s the most important tool I have for the human connections that I need. Your single most sentimental and important object? The ring my best friend and the love of my life gave me when he proposed last year. The love that it symbolises, and the strength and confidence it makes me feel is magical. Knowing he is always with me, no matter where I go in the world, no matter where I work, and no matter what I am going through, touches my heart in a very special way. Without it on my hand, I feel completely naked and like a piece of me is missing. What place inspires and rejuvenates you? Nashville. It completely stole my heart. The people, its nature, the city, and the atmosphere was everything I didn’t know I needed. Favourite food and

restaurant? It all depends on the city, but lately I have been hugely into Korean BBQ. It’s such as social experience. If I’m in New York, you’ll often find me at Takashi, and in LA, I try and eat at Park’s BBQ. One piece in your wardrobe that signifies your individual sense of style? Without a doubt, a leather jacket. It never goes out of style, holds up over time — and you can wear it with almost anything, at any time of year. It’s rock and roll, classic, adventurous, classy, rebellious, and simple all in one. The last object you bought that you instantly fell in love with? A Sony αA7 RIII camera. It’s great with video and in low light and is super dynamic. Playing around with bigger cameras on my travels has slowly become a big hobby. Your favourite watch brand? IWC. The designs are so stylish, sophisticated, and understated. There’s a perfect IWC timepiece for any occasion, whether it is a day at the beach or a gala event. I find they fit seamlessly into every

outfit I plan. They’re an essential part of my jewellery curation. They’re also true classics that will last a lifetime. In fact, the brand has been making timepieces for women since the 1870s, and those 150 years of history are obvious in every design. Each one is a product of that backstory, that heritage, but at the same time they manage to stay relevant and contemporary. Of course, I also appreciate the artistry and ingenuity of the engineering side. Each watch beats with an incredibly complex and innovative mechanism. The level of dedication and work that has gone into crafting them really blows my mind. Which one do you own? The new Portofino Automatic 34, with an 18kt gold case. All the signature IWC elements are there, presented in such a sleek and modern way. The 34mm case size, the smallest design the brand offers, is feminine and comfortable. I also love how fresh and uncluttered the silver-plated dial is. The gold-plated

hands and diamond index markers add balance, creating a pure aesthetic. The easy-to-use strap-change system also allows me to customise it to my look, and there are 13 different straps to choose from. By day, I like to style it with the green alligator strap for a more laid-back look, while at night I sometimes switch to the Milanese stainless-steel mesh bracelet for a luxe finish. The last place you travelled to that captured your heart? Tonga. Although it’s such a small country, it has such a big heart. The people live incredibly simply, but their traditions and personalities are so complex. Strong yet nurturing. Shy yet adventurous. The people are one with the ocean. The Tongans’ respect for the creatures, their care for the ocean and planet, and the pace of life on the islands taught me a lot. It reminded me to slow down, to live respecting the world and the other animals that we share it with, and to always live with wonder. The last gift you bought? The best gift you can give is travel. Physical things can rust, break, fade, and grow old, but memories and experiences last forever. By giving someone an experience, you give them empathy, perspective, and humility.
