From Tragedy: A Dream Is Born
In the late 1960s, the only hospital available to Fairbanks area residents was St. Joseph Hospital, operated by The Sisters of Charity. The great flood of August 1967 devastated St. Joseph’s Hospital – and something needed to be done. Closure of the aged and deteriorating hospital was imminent, times were hard, and the community didn’t want local government responsible for a new hospital. An amazing group of local volunteers envisioned a new, community-owned hospital. The Greater Fairbanks Community Hospital Foundation "The Hospital
Foundation" was established in early 1968 to plan, fund, construct and find an operator for the new hospital. Through tenacious, grass roots fundraising efforts the dream of a community-owned hospital became reality. With $2.5 million in private donations, $6 million in state and federal funds, land from the City of Fairbanks, and the hard work of many dedicated volunteers, a new hospital opened in 1972 – community owned and debt-free.

Additionally, the partnership provides many other benefits to the Fairbanks community, including:
The Hospital Foundation and Banner Health Partnership — A Working Relationship Committed to the Community The Hospital Foundation owns the hospital solely for the benefit of the community. The Hospital Foundation is led by a 25-person, all-volunteer Board of Trustees that comes from the membership of The Hospital Foundation. The Board of Trustees has two primary responsibilities: 1) to keep the hospital financially viable, and 2) to secure an operator of the hospital that will represent the interests of the community. Banner Health is a nonprofit healthcare company that provides health care services to the communities that it serves. Banner brings the Fairbanks community operational and systems expertise that would not be available without the important relationship in place.
