As always, we are dedicated to bringing you an issue that highlights the people, businesses and organizations that make this community a great place to live and work. With constant nods of support from other businesses, this issue boasts a spirit of community over competition. We hope you feel the same way.
For those who are new here, the purpose of our contest, in partnership with the Lawrence Journal-World, is a celebratory reflection of the values and aspirations that our city chooses to honor. The following pages will introduce you to the Best of Lawrence winners and then some. Thank you to everyone who made this issue possible.

Lulu’s Latin Food
“You have to look out for everyone: the workers, the customers and the delivery drivers,” says Eli Zaragoza, co-owner of Lulu’s Latin Food. “If everyone’s happy— the drivers, the customers, the waiters, the cooks—then we’re happy.”
“Lawrence is unique in that it goes with the flow of KU. We see that in our traffic and with our orders,” notes co-owner Kat Gohl.
“But one thing is constant—the regulars,” adds Zaragoza. “And they are an absolute priority. The people who come in frequently or even every day, they are the ones who will tell others about you and bring in people. If you do well with them, you’ll do well.” 1st - Tacos | 2nd - Mexican Food 5th - Place to Get a Margarita

Munchers Bakery
1st - Cakes, Specialty | 1st - Place to buy a Dougnut 2nd - Bakery | 5th - Place for Pie
Vali Larrick works the front counter at the ever-popular Munchers Bakery, 925 Iowa in the Hillcrest Shopping Center, and she’s a fan of some of the restaurants in Lawrence.
“Dairy Queen on Iowa has the best cheeseburgers,” she says. “Culver’s is the best place for a fish dinner; their cod is excellent. Both of the Johnny’s locations have good burgers, and I like the atmosphere. And one of my favorite restaurants is Zen Zero. Delicious!”
Vali didn’t stop at restaurants, though; she went on to give a shout-out to the meat counter at Hy-Vee as well as to T.J. Maxx for its prices and selection.
Latchkey Deli
4th - Mac & Cheese | 4th - Sandwich
Mike Young, along with wife Jen Young and business partner Chetan Michie, opened Latchkey Deli in January 2021.
Three years later, the deli is going strong at 1035 Massachusetts St.
Young says a successful sandwich shop has to know food and countless other things, from repairing roofs to keeping to-go boxes in stock.
Latchkey relies on an informal network of nearby restaurant owners who step up to the plate for one another.
“That’s the awesome thing about this community, like if I need boxes, I can call up somebody and ask for help. Greg Renck from Terrebone, Jordan Beber from JB’s Cali Fusion, and Will Soo from Lucky Seb’s Dumpling are my go-to guys, Young says. “All I have to do is put the word out and they are willing to help.”
Young also points to Bill Harvey of Harvey Brothers Construction for providing essential emergency calls.
“We always make this joke that if Bill Harvey were to move away, all the restaurants in town would close because he is HVAC extraordinaire,” Young says. “If any of my coolers go down, he’s the guy I call.”

For Jesi Kelley, owner of the Sandwich Bowl on 6th Street, returning to the community she was born in was a no-brainer.
“I came back to Lawrence in 2007 for KU. My mom raised me as a Jayhawk. It’s in my blood,” she says. “We came to football and basketball games. There was nowhere else I wanted to go.”
Since opening the Sandwich Bowl in 2012, Kelley can’t imagine herself anywhere else.
“Lawrence thrives on local business. I really couldn’t do it without the loyalty of my customers,” she says.
Kelley remembers the loyalty her customers and staff showed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The lobby was closed for 387 days. We just did curbside,” she says. “I have some of the most loyal customers. Covid-19 was hard, but they made it a lot easier.”
With that type of support, Kelley finds she can give back by providing a safe space for her customers to enjoy a home-style meal.
“I remember names, allergies, what regulars like and don’t like. And I feel that builds trust,” she says. “It’s nice to have a place you can go to and feel remembered. It’s something I’ve always believed in.”

Au Marché
3rd - International/Regional Food Grocer
Lora Wiley founded Au Marché with a passion for connecting Lawrence’s international residents to their homeland.
Now, 26 years later, she can’t imagine what her life would be like if her quaint space on Massachusetts Street hadn’t become available. At the time, Wiley was working in downtown Kansas City when the owners of Brit’s contacted her about the available space next door to them.
“Having already been at KU for school, I already knew that downtown Lawrence was a vibrant place,” she says. “I thought it was a really good fit, too, since there are so many international people who live in the community because of the University [of Kansas].”
Though Wiley says she can’t speak for other business owners, she has found success in Lawrence through its familiarity and friendliness.
“I really like that people are friendly and want to get to know you. People know my name when I go to the bank. Customers sincerely want to chat and get to know each other,” she says. “People take the time to talk to one another.”
Wiley also says it comes down to fostering relationships with those who support the store’s endeavors.
“We have a strong team here, and we all enjoy working together and getting to know our customers. It’s very important—knowing what they’re looking for and what they want,” Wiley says. “Also building a relationship with vendors. I think relationships are the most important ingredients.”
After 26 years in the game, Wiley looks forward to another 26 years.
“It certainly hasn’t felt that long,” she says. “But every day is fun.”

Leeway Butcher
2nd - Butcher Shop/Meat Counter
Lee Meisel says being hired to teach for the Intertribal Agriculture Council—one of the leading Native-led voices in Indigenous agriculture—spurred him to reflect on his personal goals.
“It made me realize that there is a big need for that ongoing education in our industry,” explains Meisel, an enrolled member of the Húŋkpapȟa (Hunkpapa) Standing Rock Sioux.
This past year, Meisel closed his popular Leeway Franks restaurant to concentrate on his butcher shop and facilitate enormous shifts in food preparation and food sovereignty for Native land.
“There’s a lot of change coming in the next few years in our industry,” Meisel says. “I guess in the past, I felt like I was a business owner who happened to be Indian. But over the last few years, I’ve started to ask: What does it mean to be a Native-owned business? What is my greater responsibility to my tribe?”

Demetrius “Dee” Kemp
1st - Community Leader, Racial Justice/Equity issues
4th - Community Leader
“My connections across the community keep me aware of what is happening in the city,” says Demetrius “Dee” Kemp, who leads the nonprofit Kindness Is the Key.
Kemp’s nonprofit provides learning kits to students in need, organizes Thanksgiving meals, hosts a trade skills job fair, and provides other case-by-case assistance. During spring break 2024, Kindness Is the Key provided between 400 and 500 care bags to students.
“I identify families that might need help and keep them in mind,” Kemp says. “Sometimes I have assistance, but I try to make all of the initial contact myself. I feel that people know me, my voice and my words. People hear about things, but until they can put a face to something, it doesn’t help as much—you have to have personal involvement.”

Monique
Mercurio
4th - Community Leader, Racial Justice/Equity issues
Since the early age of 12, Monique Mercurio found herself lacking a safe and solid community. That all changed when Mercurio and her wife moved to Lawrence four years ago.
“We moved around a lot for the military, and when we moved to Lawrence and I found Haskell, I had no other choice but to get involved because I had been looking for a community for myself and my sons,” she says.
For Mercurio, a member of the Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation, getting involved in the community allowed her to find her culture again.
“Since moving to Lawrence, I have [worked] to build relationships with people in Lawrence. And because of that, I’ve been able to find spaces for artists to thrive.”
Spaces like this include the Art Love Collective though it recently closed.
“I feel like the closing of the Art Love Collective has highlighted my ability to find ways to care for my community. I have already planned to collaborate with Haskell’s Open Market this weekend,” she says. “Building reciprocal relationships isn’t only important, but it’s integral for the sustainability of our communities.”
Being nominated in the racial justice community leader category is an honor that has confirmed Mercurio’s choices.
“It validates the fact that I’ve finally come to a safe place in life where I can care for others in a way I was never cared for,” she says. “I’ve never been anyone to sit idly in the face of injustices. To be on a list with Carole Cadue-Blackwood and Lori Hasselman… I look up to them as mentors, and they inspire me to live in a place where I put community first.”

Phoenix Art Gallery
2nd - Art Gallery
Rochelle Marsh became director of Phoenix Gallery, 825 Mass, about 18 months ago after the retirement of long-term director Sue Shea. Rochelle says, “We delight in bringing talented hand-craft artists to Lawrence and the surrounding communities.”
When asked about the other businesses in Lawrence, she immediately gave a shout-out to the bird block: Raven Bookstore and Great Blue Heron Outdoors are on the same block of Mass Street as Phoenix Gallery.
“The Raven’s been a downtown staple like Phoenix for many decades. While the Heron is newer, we enjoy being their neighbor. And they have amazing coffee. We’re fortunate to also have a good relationship with the Lawrence Arts Center, which is close by. They are a wonderful resource for the arts in our community.”
She says all of these local businesses are unique and a vital part of Lawrence’s identity.
Boys & Girls Club
3rd - Nonprofit (Children/Youth Services)
The nonprofit Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence is located at 2910 Haskell Ave. Peyton Williams, assistant director of marketing and communications, was kind enough to give us a few shout-outs for Lawrence businesses.
“The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence would love to give a shout-out to the Lawrence Arts Center and Sunfire Ceramics for inspiring artistic expression and creativity; Peaslee Tech for refining useful practical skills; the University of Kansas for fostering curiosity and ambition; and Baker Wetlands for promoting respect for wildlife and environmental conservation, among the dozens of other Lawrence businesses, organizations and individuals that have partnered with BGCLK to provide fun and rewarding programming for our youth.”

Sigler Pharmacy
1st - Community Leader (Jeff Sigler) 2nd - Place to Work (medium) | 2nd - Pharmacy
After moving to Lawrence for pharmacy school in 1981, Jeff Sigler was immediately taken by the city’s welcoming atmosphere and vibrant college life.
After pharmacy school, Sigler found himself running a multitude of small businesses.
Eventually, Sigler found himself back in the pharmaceutical game when he joined Hy-Vee as a pharmacist and manager. Soon, he had the opportunity to branch out independently and opened Sigler Pharmacy in 2005.
Since then, Sigler says his company’s success can be attributed to his care for those he works with and provides for.
“When you’re running a business, you’re hiring employees, and you have a customer base. You get to a point where you don’t want to let those people down,” Sigler says.
Sigler continues working to reach and care for people. Though he recently merged two locations on the west end of town, he opened a secondary location at 1046 Vermont St.
“We’re down to two, but … we’re hitting the city with one in the downtown area and out west. We felt like we could combine resources and reach more people that way,” he says.
As he furthers his outreach, Sigler thanks Lawrence for being a city that cares about small and locally owned businesses.
“Our community values that locally owned aspect of business,” he says. “This has allowed us to take care of our customers and have great employees. It’s provided a culture where we can make sure the customer is number one and number two, a community that values our effort.”

Hope, who has lived off and on in Lawrence since 2003, worked previously with Douglas County AIDS Project and Community Village Lawrence. She says that her jobs have allowed her to witness how Lawrence’s nonprofits collaborate and how successful ones focus on meeting specific needs.
“It’s incredible, the lives that we touch in just a week,” Hope says.

Beautiful Music Violin Shop
4th - Music Store
J.J. Hanson, owner of Beautiful Music Violin Shop, found his love for music at a young age. Since then, he’s expanded his craft and passion for the arts through Lawrence’s vibrant music scene.
“We have so many talented musicians and desire for the arts and music here,” he says. “I remember music was very accessible here. I remember buying my first guitar at Richard’s Music. I remember it being affordable for young people such as myself. Which allowed me to start playing music.”
Fifteen years later, the Beautiful Music Violin Shop stands as a haven for those who have an appreciation for the arts.
“We treat our clients individually, each person equally, and with special attention. Our shop is constantly adapting to change and discovering innovative ideas in the violin trade,” he says. “The only way to stay alive is to make sure you can do something special that no one can receive elsewhere. We’ve found one of our strengths has been to create an inspiring and safe environment.”
Hanson continues to find success in the community by building healthy and supportive relationships with his competitors.
“It’s important we maintain really good relationships with local business stores,” he says. “We always recommend a service to our clients if we can’t fulfill or provide. I think there’s a community of music stores here that appreciate and help each other.”
Hanson also commends his staff for being knowledgeable and passionate musicians.
“I’ve always been careful with who I hire. It’s important everyone who works here is authentic and loves what they do. That they take their knowledge and passion and carry that over to our clients,” Hanson says.

Ready for Good
“What’s been most helpful is staying on top of the marketing—to let people know what we are doing: we’re a nonprofit that gives life and job skills to at-risk youth,” explains Lydia Shockley, co-founder of Ready for Good.
Each year, the nonprofit organization trains, mentors, and provides a salary to dozens of youth in the foster care or juvenile justice system. The youth arrive, assemble and build home furnishings that are then sold at the organization’s storefront, with profits going back into the program.
“What we have seen is that the youth do really well,” adds Addison. “You might think that they would struggle a lot to listen or work hard, but by and large the youth really excel.”
“We want it to be a positive place, and I think the kids feel welcome and seen,” Lydia says.

Ruff House Paperie
3rd - Window Display
Shopping at Ruff House Paperie & Print Shop, 729 Mass, is not a rough—or tough—thing to do. Owner/ designer Jill Shephard and her team offer a wide range of paper products and gifts. When asked for her shout-outs, Jill quickly replied: “I love Eccentricity Lawrence. Morgan and her team are right across the street, and we love to collaborate with them on cross promotions. I also shop there personally. I love Sunflower Outdoors & Bike Shop; our family paddle boards and rides bikes, and I’ve enjoyed watching the evolution of the shop and how they’ve grown.”
She also mentions her children when referring to her next shout-out. “We’re big fans of The Toy Store. Both of my kids love the craft and arts supplies as well as the book section. We love Taylor’s Donuts and all the goodies there. There are so many, I could go on and on.
“And I’d like to send out a personal shout-out to Ryan Sparke with The Sparke Agency. He’s my insurance agent, and he’s awesome.”
Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop
1st - Bike Shop | 2nd - Sporting Goods
Being director of operations for Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop means a lot of outdoors time for Laura Wagner. After an out-of-town trip, she replied to our question with shout-outs to six Lawrence businesses.
“We give a shout-out to Cottin’s Hardware because we love the friendly faces and knowledgeable staff who help us find the right fix for our needs. Papa Keno’s is our go-to pizza place and they support good people. We send customers to Ad Astra Running when the selection at Sunflower doesn’t offer the specific running needs someone’s looking for. Swanson’s anti-fast fashion aligns well with our values of ethical consumption, and the Raven Bookstore is a well-curated bookstore that’s essential for the Lawrence community, or any community! And our go-to for local gifts is Wonderfair, and they have an awesome zine selection that provides a variety of education and entertainment options.”

Stoneback Appliance
1st - Appliance Repair | 1st Appliance Shop
Lawrence has always been home for Jack Flynn, sales manager for Stoneback Appliance.
A born-and-raised Lawrencian, Flynn is grateful to have grown up in a community that cares about people.
“The Lawrence community has so much care for one another, and I’m able to see these interactions on a daily basis,” he says.
After graduating from Rockhurst University, Flynn saw joining the team at Stoneback Appliance as a chance to give back to the community.
“Stoneback provided me the opportunity to give back to the community that raised me,” Flynn says. “I love speaking with community members daily and am very grateful for the support from the Lawrence community over all these years.”
Flynn says the company’s success stems from personal selling, a face-to-face selling technique that prioritizes in-person communication with the customer.
“Having a name and face, our customers are able to come talk to [us; it] has been a huge advantage for us over the years. And having the ability to create and maintain relationships with our customer base has given us a huge edge over the big box stores,” he says. “Standing behind the appliances you sell is also our most important duty in today’s appliance industry.”
Flynn acknowledges that Stoneback wouldn’t be the team they are today without their longest-tenured installer, Gary Lake, who has played a significant role in the company’s success.
“[He] exemplifies what it means to be a Stoneback employee. If you ever see him, make sure to say hi,” Flynn says.

A. Scarlett Aldrich, MD
1st - Surgeon | 3rd - Medical Doctor
“You’re constantly learning from your colleagues, peers, and patients,” says Scarlett Aldrich, a surgeon with Plastic Surgery Specialists of Lawrence. “You make time for conferences, you have to make time away from your family to travel, but that is really exciting because you get to pick up on things and bring them back home and invest in your community, But my patients tend to be some of my best teachers because they constantly give me feedback of ‘this works for me,’ or ‘this didn’t work for me,’ or ‘this was really challenging going through this process with this, but I found this made it better,’ or ‘I really appreciate that you did this, because it made the process that much easier.’”
Drs.
Kelsey and Drake Kayser
essential ingredients
Best of Lawrence winners discuss their recipe for success.
Five years ago, husband-and-wife chiropractors Drs. Kelsey and Drake Kayser felt pulled to open their own practice in Lawrence.
“We had come across a great opportunity to take over a previous chiropractor’s lease,” Kelsey says.
Shortly after, they opened Midwest Muscle and Joint Clinic.
Despite not being from the area, Kelsey says it’s the community that has kept her here.
“We love seeing people in our community flourish and function at their best. It is a privilege to be able to help our patients reach their goals,” she says.
Though Kansas has always been home to Drake, he echoes similar sentiments for staying and working in the community.
Their shared passion for helping others has been integral to their outreach into the community.
“Having a passion for helping people, a dedication to bringing them the best care, and a large emphasis on patient education and communication have been essential to our success,” Kelsey says.
The duo prides themselves on being a hardworking, two-person show.
“Our clinic is a real ‘mom and pop shop,’” she says. “We do everything ourselves at the office while raising two—soon to be four—kiddos. There is a whole lot of teamwork going on in the office and in our home, day in and day out. I couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

Bluestem Yoga
1st - Place for Yoga Classes
Community and family are two consistent themes in the life of Sandy Beverly, owner of Bluestem Yoga.
Since venturing to the area nearly 24 years ago for a teaching job at the University of Kansas, Beverly has loved raising her kids here.
“I tell my kids all the time, you’re really lucky to grow up here. There’s a lot to do, and it’s a welcoming and accepting place to live,” she says.
Getting her start in yoga happened about 12 years ago.
“I have always been active, but I hadn’t done yoga. I started dabbling in it because it was here and I like to try new things,” Beverly says. “It was fun, and I felt a sense of community. I liked the calmness and the teachers.”
Throughout the pandemic, many businesses closed their doors. As stores slowly began to reopen and spaces became available, Beverly seized the opportunity to open her own studio.
“A seed sprouted that I wanted to own someday,” she says. “When things started opening up again, there was not only an opportunity but a need for one [a yoga studio] in the community.”
Since then, Beverly has found success in building a safe space for her team members and those wanting to step out of their comfort zone.
“I was looking for a second chapter and decided to follow my heart,” Beverly says. “I really wanted and feel so lucky to have amazing teachers, a peaceful space, a sense of community, and a safe space where everyone feels welcome.”

2nd - Dietitian/Nutritionist
Specializing in counseling and education, Ashley Combs is a holistic nutritionist with the Atma Clinic, 1026 Westdale Road. She gives shout-outs to Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, Atma Clinic, and Season of Stars.
“Sunflower has always been about living the selfpropelled life, and the additions they’ve made to the retail space have been huge. The food and drinks at the Sunflower Café and Pub are delicious and wellintentioned with a ‘nourish the body and soul’ kind of mindset, and the presence of OmTree Shala studio adds another self-care element to the healthy active lifestyle as they offer yoga, pilates, and other classes.
“The Atma Clinic is a hidden gem that provides top-notch integrative health care. It’s genuinely a place where everyone knows your name and is on your team. You won’t find individualized care quite like this.
“Not your ordinary self-care destination, Season of Stars is a dreamy spa offering a list of skin and soul treatments from Liz Black, a holistic esthetician. She has her own line of homemade organic skincare products, and she offers energetic services such as reiki, sound healing, and microcurrent facials, just to name a few. I’m forever grateful for this cosmic oasis.”

Sunflower Aesthetics

3rd - Esthetician (Whitney Pinegar)
“We take time for personal education, in terms of staying on top of the latest offerings. The field of aesthetics is everchanging, there are always new devices, so we want to make sure we are proficient in what devices we have and what services we offer,” says Shari L. Quick, owner and medical director of Sunflower Aesthetics. “We try to stay on top of trends so we can be the best at what we do.”
Because aesthetics combines health fundamentals with beauty trends, services need to encompass both areas.
“Some treatments have lost popularity in just the five years since we started in 2019,” Quick explains, “so we are always looking for new ways to use technology and adapt the services we offer.”

LaRue Inspection Service
1st - Home Inspector
“No matter how long you’ve been doing it, if you stop learning then you’re doing something wrong,” says Bret LaRue, owner of LaRue Inspection Service.
LaRue has operated his home inspection business for Lawrence and the Lawrence region since 2017. He says much has changed and continues to change.
“New technologies, new building materials, new ways to build houses—you have to stay up-to-date constantly,” he adds, noting that an inspector should not rely on waiting to find out what the minimum standard is required by law.
“I’m interested in best practices more than specific codes because usually codes will eventually align with best practices but they tend to lag behind best practices.”
Best of Lawrence finalists and winners give a shout-out to other businessess in the community.
A licensed esthetician, Lawrence native Kara Easum started her own business, Skin Kara, after Covid, and she works out of Volume Lash & Hair Studio, 2108 W. 27th St., Suite J. When asked about other Lawrence businesses that are doing great work, she quickly listed a few.
“Since I’m in the beauty industry, I keep up with others in the business. Molly Morgan has been my friend for the last 15 years and my hair stylist for eight or nine years. She works out of Volume Lash & Hair as well. Khwanta at Pink Lotus is a very talented nail artist and technician. It’s difficult to get an appointment with her, she’s so in demand, but she’s great. Teresa Evans at Nail Nook is very good; we went to beauty school together. And I used to be in the restaurant industry and still work part-time for Terri and Tyler Stewart with Southern Accent Catering. I can’t seem to put the restaurant industry behind me!”
The team of Ryan and Maggie Sparke split duties at The Sparke Agency. Ryan handles insurance and sales with Maggie handling social media and communications. Their shout-outs go to Hite Collision Repair, John Durino, Eaton Roofing & Exteriors, Danielle Hugunin, and Holly Garber.
Maggie says, “Dave and his team at Hite Collision stand out for their exceptional attention to detail, and they treat you like family. When a plumbing issue arises, John Durino is there when you need him. He delivers top-notch service as a Master Plumber. Adam and his team at Eaton Roofing & Exteriors are outstanding. They consistently deliver exceptional results, making them a trusted local choice.
“Danielle is a Lawrence native, and she and her team at Bell Bank ensure a smooth process as mortgage brokers. She is easy to work with, making the entire process seamless. Holly Garber has 20-plus years of experience with American Dream Realty, and she and her team offer deep local expertise along with personalized care. She’s a pleasure to work with.”

2nd - Event Planner
“The details—you don’t really know how much work goes into it until you’re in the mud,” explains Kianti Vann, owner of KiantEvents, when asked about the behind-the-scenes work in planning large events, such as weddings.
“Oh, weddings are the hardest,” she adds with a smile. “You never know what curve ball is going to be thrown at you on the day—and you have only one day.”
Vann, who worked in customer service for 13 years before starting her company, says she has one tip for all the brides she works with: “Stop stressing! There’s so much that goes into a wedding, but on that day you are supposed to be happy. That’s easier said than done, but take a breath, bride, and call me—I’ve got you.”

“It’s a really tight-knit community; that’s what has made me stick around,” he says.
Prosser, who runs HomeFix Lawrence, offers Lawrence a lifetime of construction knowledge. Born and raised here, he has a deep understanding of the community’s need for home improvement services.
“I like being able to help people out. There’s always people in need here,” Prosser says.
Prosser and his team provide an array of handyman tasks, transformative remodels and personalized solutions. More specific services include roofing, remodels and fence installation.
Going on his fourth year as a thriving Lawrence business, Prosser says he finds success through positive word of mouth.
“I like working because my friends and family are here, and they tell people we’re here,” he says. “It spreads like wildfire when you do good work, and I think that’s what we’re doing over here. It also spreads when you do bad work. Prosser adds he is thankful for his mom, Charlotte, his father who recently passed away, and his partner, Katy Kolman, for their support.

Woods Creative
3rd - Advertising/Marketing Service
“From my perspective, I get to work with clients who have such a passion and love for what they do, but sometimes they are so busy working in their business, that they don’t have time to work on their business. They can get tired, and the first thing to go to the side is their branding or marketing,” says Kel Woods, owner of Woods Creative.
“So, I do brand and marketing workshops to help clients rediscover the why—why are they doing what they are doing?” adds Woods. “I want to give them that opportunity to breathe new life into their company and go back to having fun doing what they do.”

Tailored Men
1st - Barber
“It comes down to customer service … you sit them down in a chair and make them feel good about themselves,” says Jessica Vande Velde, owner of Tailored Men.
“It’s that personal connection. I’m terrible with names, but as long as you remember something about them, that will make them feel better,” Vande Velde says, adding that this connection and the genuine conversations make the stylist feel better as well.
Ultimately, Vande Velde suggests, a haircut or a shave represents a service based on human interaction, based on listening to and responding to someone— skills that are less and less common.
“A lot of our culture is behind the computer or behind social media. There isn’t a lot of one-on-one anymore, and we have got to have that,” Vande Velde says.

Brit Kring, owner of Kring’s Interiors, has lived in Lawrence his whole life.
“I was born here. But I stay because of the people,” he says. “I love Lawrence. I love the eclectic nature. It’s not a onesided community. There’s so much diversity. It’s a constantly changing and interesting town. Like it or dislike it, you get a lot of viewpoints.”
Kring’s Interiors provides professional flooring installations, expert advice and an array of selections for its customers. Additional services include interior design, restoration, window installation and more.
Despite its many services, Kring recognizes that his decadeslong success is due to his well-rounded team.
“I recognize we’re a want, not a need. Why are we successful? Because I have the best people,” he says. “We value service and communication with our customers. Are we perfect? No. I’d never claim that. But we will take care of you,” Kring says. Kring is committed to hiring an experienced team to meet the needs of his clients.
“If you hire good people and treat them nicely, respectfully, fairly, it doesn’t mean you don’t hold them accountable, but I don’t find that I have trouble. There’s lots of great people in this town,” he says. “We invest in training, and what makes us successful… it’s the people. The team. No doubt about it. And treating your customers with respect and fairness. It’s not complicated.”

1st - Bar | 1st - Place to get a Bloody Mary 2nd - Bartender (Kanani Warner) 3rd - Bartender (Sean Donnelly) 3rd - Happy Hour | 4th - Beer Selection 5th - Place to get a Mixed Drink/Cocktail
“It takes a different type of person to work in a bar,” says Patrick Frazell, a manager at Louise’s Downtown. “There’s always going to be a problem; you just have to decide how that’s going to affect your day because however you are going to let it affect your day will affect your customer’s day as well.”
“It takes patience and problem-solving. You got to have people who care,” adds Donnelly, who has worked as a bartender at Louise’s for six years. “We’ve got a good staff who show up because they want to show up.”
“No matter what is going on behind the scenes, make sure people are having a good time,” Frazell says. “People come to a bar to have a good time—you do everything you can to make that happen.”

Checkers Foods
1st - Butcher Shop/Meat Counter | 1st - Fresh Produce
1st - Grocery Store | 1st - International/Regional Food Grocer 2nd - Place for Health & Nutrition Goods | 4th - Store to Buy Beer
J.R. Lewis, owner and operator of Checkers, has deep roots here.
His grandfather was a longtime Lawrence physician, so Lewis began spending summers and holidays here in the 1960s.
In the summer of 1982, Lewis moved with his family to the area after his father purchased the Rusty’s IGA grocery stores.
“We built Checkers in place of one of the stores in 1987 to provide the community with a bigger concept focused on quality fresh meat, produce and groceries at the best possible discount pricing,” he says.
As a previous employee and now owner, his passion for providing to the community has only grown.
“Lawrence is great, and we are blessed to be an integral part of this community,” he says.
He employs approximately 120 people, and many of his team members have worked with him since he bought Rusty’s IGA in 1992.
Lewis’ passion is providing his customers with quality local and fresh products at affordable prices.
“Our customers are like family and friends. We enjoy trying to procure different items for that special recipe—so just ask us. The team appreciates the opportunity to serve and help us all to save money,” Lewis says.

City Wine Market
3rd - Store to Buy Wine | 4th - Store to Buy Liquor 5th - Store to Buy Beer
When Steve Wilson moved from Tucson, Arizona, to Lawrence with his parents in 1987, he had a moment of self-discovery.
“I realized I am a closet Midwesterner,” he says.
On a more serious note, Wilson was envious of those who had roots here. It was something he soon realized he wanted for himself and his family.
“Growing up, I really didn’t know anybody. We were all sort of scattered around, and when I moved here, I envied the people who had roots here,” he says. “This is somewhere you can do that. This is home.”
And so, Wilson and his wife put down roots.
Wilson also became the owner of City Wine Market. With over two decades of experience in the wine and fine-dining scene, Wilson enjoys bringing the community a tailored wine experience.
“What we wanted to provide was the sort of wine shops we would experience in New York. The shop there is pretty small, so what you put in a city wine shop has to be deliberate and well-directed because you simply don’t have the space,” he explains. “This, combined with our experience, gave us confidence to go through the product and vet it on our own terms. We want to keep things that we would enjoy ourselves, represent quality and have a story.”
Lawrence has been the perfect place for Wilson and his trusted business partner, Jamie Woodall-Routledge, to do that.
Best of Lawrence finalists and winners give a shout-out to other businessess in the community.
Liesel Callahan, Liesel Anne Studios
3rd - Artist- Painting/Sculpting
As a watercolor and gouache artist, Liesel Callahan leads the team at Liesel Anne Studios, creating original artwork and products. She grew up in Lawrence, is a fourth-generation Jayhawk, and is thrilled to be talking about other Lawrence businesses: “Such a great idea!”
Her list begins with Weaver’s Department Store: “They do a great job keeping up with trends, styles, and brands that people want, all while keeping the feel of a local department store.”
“It’s hard to be a restaurant in downtown Lawrence,” she says, “especially when you’re not on Mass, but Dempsey’s Burger Pub never disappoints. They have incredible food and fun events.”
Liesel’s artistic background led her to Love of Character, a local shop specializing in paper products and more. “They fill the party goods niche for Lawrence with cute and unique stuff. It isn’t just generic. You can get all the supplies to throw a party (including balloons) as well as gifts!”
Truity Credit Union is on Liesel’s list of top spots. “They’re community focused and give back locally. I love that they’re focused on helping little kids learn how to save and manage their money.”
Another great venue is the Eldridge Hotel, she says. “They stay consistent with great service, delicious food, and top-notch atmosphere. It’s the best hotel in town!”

Michael Hamm
1st - Private Music Instructor 2nd - Solo Musician
“The most important thing for a person is to have the motivation to continue to educate themselves,” says Michael Hamm, a Lawrence native who has been teaching guitar for 31 years.
Hamm, who has played in theater performances, weddings, bar gigs, and other musical groups, has seen many music trends come and go in Lawrence— and he says that is a great thing.
“I think and hope that people will continue to borrow from what has been done and come up with things that are new, whether it’s a fusion of things, or whether it is taking something traditional like jazz or blues and giving new life to it,” Hamm says.
