my friends, my community, With all the changes in our world this past year, we have discovered there are few things more important than community. When a community thrives, its people thrive. In a year of expected decline, De Soto has continued to flourish by focusing resources on the workforce needs of our residents, businesses, and community. This is the third issue of Expanding De Soto, a joint venture between our Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council, City of De Soto government, and Unified School District 232. Coincidentally, it’s through these same strong partnerships that a holistic and successful workforce development initiative emerged. Our goal of economic expansion is determined by our ability to unify workforce efforts in developing highly skilled workers already living in our community, promoting the work and accomplishments of our businesses, offering reasonable housing options, and then letting potential businesses know De Soto is a great place to call home. We have dedicated this issue of our annual publication to showcasing just a few of the ways we have committed our time and resources to workforce development. I invite you to read how we are connecting our community and why we are ready for more.

Here’s to continued strength in De Soto. Rick Walker, Mayor

Membership in the De Soto Chamber of Commerce provides networking opportunities and more. Pulling together, Chamber members find ways to tout the benefits and welcome newcomers to the organization.

I

t took only three hours for the De Soto Chamber of Commerce to grow its membership by 49%. That kind of explosive growth might have taken five years, had it not been for the membership drive in February 2020. That was before Covid-19—some members may still recall that day, when everyone came together to recruit new members and retain existing ones. Sara Ritter, president of the De Soto Chamber of Commerce, said the secret ingredient to the blitz in membership was Your Chamber Connection, a national organization based in Texas that led the membership drive and made it a fun-filled and encouraging event for chamber volunteers. “We (hadn’t) done a formal recruitment campaign with volunteers at this scale,” Ritter says. “To be able to get nearly 70 new members in a 24-hour period was unheard of.” The 2020 drive marked the first time the chamber had worked with Your Chamber Connection. While it almost looked like a telethon, the drive was an opportunity for chamber members to join together in teams and share with potential new business members their testimony about the benefits of being involved with the chamber. Ritter says the membership drive with Your Chamber Connection would not have been possible without the support of the chamber board. “They had the vision to embrace this new concept that we’ve never been through before, and at the end, when we saw the amount of effort and new opportunities for both our members

6

and the new members that came from it, it was amazing to see that sort of cooperation for a community as a whole,” Ritter says. “It warmed my heart.” Bringing in Your Chamber Connection was both a key strategy to the drive’s success and also a unique, out-of-thebox opportunity because it encouraged volunteers to get competitive and have fun recruiting new members, Ritter says. “What was so amazing to me was seeing these folks support the chamber and making those calls, and getting members in,” Ritter says. “It was such an inspirational day, seeing our members support our organization and make phone calls and say you need to be involved.” During the membership drive, the chamber gained 68 new members, resulting in more than $30,000 in new membership revenue for the chamber and the De Soto Economic Development Council, Ritter says, adding that the average per dollar investment came in around $500 per member. “Yes, we are small, but we are now growing,” Ritter says. “We’re still a pretty small chamber, so now that everyone is familiar with how this process works, we expect that the next time we do it, there’s going to be even more support.” Prior to the 2020 membership drive, the chamber had about 125 members. Afterward, the chamber’s total membership came up to about 200, Ritter says. “Recruitment is essential to allow the organization to grow, but without the retention of our existing members, we wouldn’t be where we are at this point,” Ritter says. “We take pride in

the fact that we have long-term members, and we wanted to make sure that retention was as equally important in this membership drive too.” Corey Davis is a new member who came on board after last year’s drive. As owner of Mowmentum Lawns LLC, Davis says his new membership has already been helpful because he made connections with other businesses from the chamber directory and gained new clients who live in the Arbor Ridge townhomes. “I’ve had multiple phone calls off the directory, and I’ve actually grown probably 20% every year that I’ve been here,” he says. Corey Davis is a member because his wife, Jill Davis of Mary Kay, recruited him. He has watched firsthand how his wife’s business and network of connections have both grown during the life of her chamber membership (at least 12 years and counting). They met their real estate agent, Kris Johnson, also a chamber member, through those connections. “If they want to do business in De Soto, I believe it’s a good idea,” Corey Davis says. “You’re definitely going to meet more people.” Jill Davis agrees, saying she and her husband would encourage anyone to join if they have a business interest in De Soto. “One of the first things that I realized 12 years ago, even before the explosion of De Soto, is just how active the chamber is,” she says. “There’s lots of meetings, lots of networking opportunities; even during Covid, there have been regular updates. “I’ve always called it a very ambitious chamber. Sara is just always forward-thinking in how we can grow the chamber, meet the needs of members and be set up for future growth, not just maintaining.” As part of the chamber since November 2002, Ritter has seen membership ebb and flow over the years. Historically, the chamber’s highest level of membership has been about 170 members. Then the Great Recession hit in 2008, and the

chamber lost members as businesses closed. Membership grew incrementally afterward, until the rapid growth in early 2020. Half the chamber members are from outside De Soto because they have a vested interest in the growth and development in the city. “That says a lot about our community as a whole,” Ritter says. “De Soto is on the map, and there’s a lot of interest in the De Soto area for businesses.” Ritter says they’re slated to retain about 160 to 170 members from this year’s membership drive. That’s an 85% to 90% retention rate—much better than what other chambers have experienced, especially as so many businesses have struggled through the pandemic. “It is so hard to be able to say we’ve achieved everything we wanted to because right as we had that momentum, Covid hit,” Ritter says, adding she hopes to bring members together again when it’s safe to do so. Chamber membership can counter some of the effects of the pandemic because the chamber can provide both networking opportunities as well as Covid-19 relief resources. “It’s just a great opportunity for a business in De Soto to have that contact and relationships with people all across the (Kansas City) metropolitan area,” Ritter says. “Those relationships are something that you can’t put a dollar sign on.”

Merck Animal Health provides unconditional support for all creatures, great and small.

M

erck Animal Health is one of many successful corporations within the De Soto business landscape, providing goods and services, most generally, in the field of animal health and science. The manufacturer offers veterinarians, farmers, pet owners, and government agencies one of the widest ranges of veterinary pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and health management solutions and services, as well as an extensive suite of digitally connected identification, traceability, and monitoring products. “We cover both the livestock business, as well as the animal companion business,” says Tom Schad, director of North American communications. “Everything from horses, to cows, to pigs, to cats, to dogs.” It’s evident that Merck’s commitment to animals is serious business, quite literally, starting from behind the desk. “I’ve got my assistant right here to help,” says Schad, as he playfully strokes one of several cats in his home office. In the role since 2018, Schad came to Merck Animal Health from outside the animal health industry.

“I didn’t have the animal health background, but I was attracted to this company for what it represents,” Schad says. “When I looked at Merck Animal Health, I saw what they were doing. This company isn’t just about the profits. They really want to make sure those animals are safe and healthy. They care about their communities, and they care about their customers. We believe if we do the right thing, the business will take care of itself.” And their customers come in all sizes. Merck Animal Health serves everyone from large corporations to single farmers. “Animals need the same care,” Schad says, “whether you have a herd of 10 or a herd of 10,000.” Merck Animal Health has been active in the De Soto area since 2001; however, its parent company, Merck, has been in existence for 130 years. It has undergone several tweaks over the decades, in terms of acquisitions and mergers. As it stands today, Merck Animal Health has been around since 2007 and is present in more than 50 countries, while its products are available in some 150 markets. Impressive, to say the least. But maybe even more impressive than their vast catalogue of products and services or their rich history is Merck’s approach to doing business. The vision of Merck Animal Health involves a commitment to their motto “the Science of Healthier Animals.” It is dedicated to preserving and improving the health, well-being, and performance of animals and the people who care for them.

SIX KEY AREAS OF UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT RESPECT FOR THE VETERINARY PROFESSIONAL COMPASSION FOR ANIMAL CARE AND WELFARE COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMERS PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT OF FUTURE LEADERS CARING TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

“Our customers wake up at 4:30 in the morning. They are out there in the fields with their animals, and we are out there with them when they need us.” —Tom Schad

10

At the heart of this commitment are “Six Key Areas of Unconditional Support” (below left). Unveiled in 2020, Merck’s social platform comprises six key components with the aim of showcasing its role as a responsible corporate citizen. Oftentimes when corporations draft white papers and plans outlining such aspirations, they remain just that—aspirations. Not with Merck Animal Health; behind the policies, behind the studies, behind the research and development, lie real people and real animals with real stories. “We had 20 young horses that were part of a research project we were undertaking. When the project was completed, the horses were approximately 2 years old. And what do you do with 20 essentially wild horses?” Schad says. “Our people sought out and found a home for those 20 horses at the Agape Boys Boarding School located in southern Missouri. We donated the 20 horses to that boys’ home. These boys, who have faced challenges in their lives, are going to train those horses. The training process will help the boys learn how to react and interact with animals. Once [the horses are] trained, they will sell the horses, and reinvest it back into the boarding school.” Outside of sweeping gestures, such as donating 20 horses, Merck Animal Health is always available to lend a hand in plenty of day-to-day routines, as well. “Our customers wake up at 4:30 in the morning. They are out there in the fields with their animals, and we are out there with them when they need us,” Schad says. Merck Animal Health demonstrates its commitment to customers and animals in some less common situations, too. “We are out there during floods and devastation. We help customers out, whether it’s pulling animals out of the mud, to making sure that they are protected from some of the diseases that disasters can cause,” Schad says. Other recent initiatives that Merck has supported through their Areas of Unconditional Support include: • Partnering with an organization called “Street Dog Coalition,” which helps people who have been displaced or who are experiencing homelessness find stable homes for their pets • Providing more than a million dollars in scholarships to students in 2020 • Organizing volunteer services in communities, including making masks and offering clinics • Aiding communities in reducing the amount of products that end up in landfills • Donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to organizations such as the National FFA Organization and the American Family Association De Soto counts itself fortunate to be home of Merck Animal Health. There are certainly obvious benefits, such as jobs and the stimulation of local economy. But Merck offers something else. “We are not just a pharmaceutical company,” says Schad. “We are a neighbor in the community.”

hat do you get when you add a highly rated school district, easy highway access, ample job opportunities, and enough space to spread out without encroaching on your neighbors? The short answer is De Soto. In recent years, De Soto has become a destination for those looking for a quiet, pastoral experience without sacrificing great amenities like big-city shopping and recreation. With proximity to several other growing cities such as Olathe and Lawrence, De Soto also draws people who want some separation from hectic jobs without a strenuous commute. With various styles of neighborhoods and housing available, from townhomes and apartments to larger estates, the developers of De Soto are trying to meet the growing need. City administrator Mike Brungardt says De Soto has several vital factors drawing in residents. “I hear it time and again. They like to live in Johnson County, with proximity to the larger city amenities, combined with the more rural atmosphere. The school district is a terrific draw. It’s probably our best economic development tool in terms of residential growth,” Brungardt says. Another major draw of the De Soto area is space. With larger lots, people who want to stay close to the city can stay a bit farther away from their neighbors. Estatesized lots are popular to the point of selling out for some developers, like Don Parr. His Arbor Ridge development has a mix of townhomes and single-family homes, both on standard-sized lots and estate-sized lots. He’s currently completely sold out though he expects 63 lots to become available in the spring. With four different builders offering model homes in Arbor Ridge, Parr says they try to keep their housing prices in the $350,000–$400,000 range for standard-sized lots. After his 1- to 3-acre estate lots sold out, he started offering smaller but still spacious estate lots that are roughly 10% larger than traditional single-family home lots. Brungardt says De Soto faces the same struggle as many small cities—finding lower-cost housing options for their workforce. With several large employers in the

Brungardt says incentivizing home construction in the aftermath of the 2008 recession has resulted in a building boom that has provided great options for single family homes. But even with that increased supply, demand is outstripping supply and driving prices up. Now, the city has to tackle the issue of lower-cost housing. “There’s an incredibly strong demand for workforce housing. That’s the next challenge to find—workforce housing at price points (so) the people who work here can afford to live here,” Brungardt says. With a city government that’s sensitive to the community’s needs, hopefully new solutions will emerge to allow more people to enjoy the small town feel and big city advantages that De Soto offers. 2021–2022

A new center and programs help USD 232 students look to the future.

D

e Soto USD 232 is adding a new education center with an anticipated opening in August. Located at 8201 Mize Boulevard in Lenexa, the Cedar Creek Exploration Center is being built as part of an $85 million bond issue approved by voters in May 2018. That bond is scheduled to provide enhancements for every school in the district; it contained a three-phase construction project over the course of four years and includes the Early Childhood Center, with construction that began in 2020. The Early Childhood Center will support district students aged from birth to 5 years old through quality preschool programs, special education services, screenings, and parent education. For the 2021–22 school year, Cedar Trails preschool enrollment is estimated to be 175 preschool students participating in half-day programs. Information about enrollment and other early childhood services can be found at the district’s website, www.USD232.org. A portion of the CTEC building will provide space for courses and programs designed for juniors and seniors with the goal of helping them learn about possible career paths prior to investing time and money in college classes, certification, or additional training. Students will “try on a career” through appropriate courses that connect with the student’s Individual Plan of Study as part of the Center for Advanced Professional Studies. The innovative CAPS programs allow students to immerse themselves in a professional culture while being mentored by real world employers and while solving real world problems. Students are eligible to receive both high school and college credit for their work. The program is an example of how public education can successfully partner with businesses and the community to help educate and create the highly skilled workforce that will be needed in the future. For several years, the De Soto School District has partnered with the Eudora School District to allow USD 232 students to attend the Eudora-De Soto Technical Education Center for career and technical education programs. Now those students will have the opportunity to attend classes and participate in educational programs closer to home. Eudora students will also have the chance to attend the center’s CAPS program.

Each of the three strands culminates with a workplace experience. “Each strand has a business/ industry advisory council who assist with offering ideas for program improvement and realworld learning opportunities,” says Dr. Cindy Swartz, career & technical education coordinator. “Students will be encouraged to work together on collaborative projects similar to how business/industry operates in the real world. Seniors will be provided an opportunity to complete capstone projects with assistance from mentors.” The bioscience strand focuses on solving modern health problems through scientific processes leading to the creation of useful products. A student has the chance to learn more about medicine, forensic science, biomedical engineering, and public health, among others. The courses offered include applied biochemistry, Advanced Placement biology, biotechnical engineering, and biomedical innovation. The design strand features on-site design labs, software, and equipment for students interested in careers in digital visual design, graphics/ animation, art production, marketing, and web design. Those class options include principles of illustration, graphic design fundamentals, computer

graphics, graphic design, animation, and game design. The emerging technologies strand combines electronics, robotics, computer science, engineering, and manufacturing and incorporates new and emerging careers such as automated systems, fabrication, and engineering. Course options include robotics, cybersecurity, digital electronics, computer integrated manufacturing, engineering design and development, Advanced Placement computer science principles, introduction to welding, advanced production blueprint reading, mass production, and automated systems. Students will attend their home high school—De Soto High School or Mill Valley High School—for half of the day and then attend classes at the center for the other half. Since USD 232 follows the block schedule of classes, students will attend advanced classes every other day with time allotted during the middle of the day to transition to the other school. “At CTEC CAPS, students will grow and problem-solve while following their career interests and understanding that learning never stops once you are in your career. This program allows students to try on a profession to see if it fits prior to spending money on a college education. Students will be empowered with experience to help them make informed life choices prior to graduation,” Swartz says.

USD 232 is ranked as a Best School District in Kansas as identified by Niche, which develops those rankings by analysis of key statistics from the U.S. Department of Education along with reviews from students and parents. The rankings also include test scores, college readiness, activities, health and safety, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, and teacher quality. The district received an overall grade of A+ and ranked No. 2 of all school districts within the state of Kansas.

ast year was a difficult year in many ways, to say the least. It seemed that no place was immune to the hardships faced around the globe in 2020, including De Soto. Financial strains, divisive political stances, and illness were just a few factors that left cities across the country reeling during the pandemic. However, a mix of small-town values and big business savvy has proven to be the perfect combination to keep De Soto not only surviving but thriving. At the center of this flourishing community is the De Soto Chamber of Commerce. The chamber plays host to about 190 members, ranging from small, homebased businesses to nationwide household names. Its mission is to increase visibility and growth for its members while serving the community and holding fast to its values. It’s easy to see that this mission is being accomplished just by taking a look at a few of the booming businesses in the area.

20

Engineered Air

De Soto is home to the head office of Engineered Air, one of North America’s largest manufacturers of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, and energy recovery equipment. Engineered Air employs more than 1,300 team members, with facilities all over the continent, including 12 sales offices in Canada, 20 offices in the United States, and a total of nine factories, both north and south of the Canadian border. The De Soto facility employs just under 300. Biggest Perk of a Having a Facility in De Soto: “The people, both employees from De Soto and surrounding areas, as well as the people throughout the community, from the mayor to Sara Ritter (president, Chamber of Commerce), to other businesses in town. It’s a real benefit to have a town like De Soto to support a business and work with us as we’ve grown and expanded.” —Paul Hansen, Engineered Air general manager

Custom Foods

Like most successful corporations, Custom Foods is in the business of making dough. However, they take their dough a little more literally. Custom Foods has been producing pizza dough, cookie dough, pie crusts, and a host of other bread and pastry goods in De Soto for the past 24 years. Products can be purchased by restaurants, grocery stores, and even for fundraising purposes, so customers can make a little dough of their own. Custom Foods employees 63 team members for round-the-clock, quality dough production. Biggest Perk of Having a Facility in De Soto: “De Soto is highly accessible, and the people are great to work with. There is a strong sense of comradery in the industrial park between the business entities located here, and the community is growing. Housing development has been key. Most of our employees are very local. As De Soto continues to offer more housing solutions and support businesses for the community, we find it easier to maintain staffing requirements and grow our businesses.” —Ethan Hart, Custom Foods president

Huhtamaki

Huhtamaki, manufacturers of disposable tableware and food packaging, is home to 18 production facilities in North America with 3,800 employees and more than $1.2 billion in revenue. In addition to housing the corporate offices, the De Soto site also converts paperboard for both frozen and dry goods to be distributed to numerous grocery and retail outlets. Biggest Perk of Having a Facility in De Soto: “De Soto’s location seems like it’s out away from the city, but that’s what makes it great. Our employees can easily commute from anywhere, and they have the convenience of being close to Kansas City and Lawrence. They can then return to their family’s activities and homes without … special arrangements. It’s small-town living with big-city convenience.” —Wessley Hudelson, communications manager

USD 232

Though not technically a business, the De Soto school district, USD 232, certainly is thriving. The district includes 12 campuses with seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools. With a student population of more than 7,400, the district has a record of consistent improvement with a continued quest for excellence. One of the hallmarks of the district is its dedication to acting in the best interest of students, families, teachers, and the community as a whole. This dedicated service, combined with the support of civic leaders and the cooperation of other community organizations and institutions, has resulted in the outstanding success USD 232 is now experiencing. Biggest Perk of a Thriving School District: “We are proud to be part of the De Soto community — one that supports USD 232 and its commitment to provide the best possible education for all students. The school district benefits from its association with De Soto because of its focus on the future and its great location in Johnson County. Families are choosing to relocate into this area for the wonderful amenities and great schools.” —Alvie L. Cater, assistant superintendent

Merck Animal Health

When it comes to animals, customers, employees, and the community, Merck Animal Health is dedicated to doing the right thing. This supplier of veterinary pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and health management solutions puts people before profits. For more on the business, turn to page 9. Biggest Perk of Having a Facility in De Soto: “De Soto lies in the heart of the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor, which is home to more than 300 animal health companies. In addition to the quality of life and economics of the area, the location gives Merck Animal Health access to a strong pipeline of talent.” —Thomas Schad, director of North American communications

Rehrig Pacific Co.

The philosophy of the Rehrig Pacific Co. could be, “If you move something from Point A to Point B, we’ve got a product that can better your business.” Originally named Rehrig Box and Manufacturing Co., Rehrig has been producing shipping containers and crates for more than 100 years, with a current emphasis on roll-out carts and recycling bins. Values such as family, service, growth, intrapreneurship, and innovation lie at the core of their work.

2021–2022

PROGRAM HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR WORKFORCE Biggest Perk of Having a Facility in De Soto: “For over 20 years, Rehrig Pacific Co. has enjoyed the benefits of urban resources with a smalltown personality, right here in De Soto. The local government and school systems are stable and growth-minded. We’re able to attract across a wide area, from the Kansas City metro through De Soto and over to Lawrence and Topeka. As a fourth-generation, family-owned light industrial manufacturer, Rehrig Pacific looks forward to growing our team and deepening our roots in De Soto.” —Chris Gab, plant manager

Harps Food

Harps is one of the largest employee-owned businesses in the United States. What started as a single, small grocery store in Arkansas in the 1930s has exploded into a Midwest chain, boasting 110 locations. In total, Harps employs more than 5,600 team members; 60 of those team members are working hard to bring residents of De Soto fresh, quality foods at competitive prices. Biggest Perk of Having a Facility in De Soto: “With De Soto being a smaller community, it’s nice to get to know individual customers on a personal level.” —Shane Murray, De Soto store manager

First Student Bus Transportation

First Student has been partnering with the De Soto School District to ensure safe transportation of local students for more than 20 years. Each school day, a team of nearly 90 expertly trained drivers, monitors, dispatchers, and maintenance technicians come together to provide the safest form of school transportation for approximately 2,800 students and families. If you are interested in making a difference, First Student is always hiring drivers who are committed to safety, customer service and have genuine, caring attitudes for children. Prospective candidates must be at least 21 years old, able to pass all background checks and drug screens, plus have a valid driver’s license with three years of driving experience. Biggest Perk of Working Within the De Soto Community: “A hometown feel, with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in our community by providing them with a safe and reliable way to get to and from school.” —Roxanne Sanford, location safety manager.

2021–2022

What began as an idea with the Governor’s Council on Education has reached another milestone. The state’s Work-Based Learning curriculum is being tested by five school districts, including De Soto USD 232. In 2019, when the council was formed, the mandate was to develop ways of improving education in Kansas, along with ways of improving relationships between the education and business sectors that would also address Kansas businesses’ need for a skilled workforce. This partnership led to the work-based curriculum now in the testing phase. USD 232’s program is overseen by Dr. Cindy Swartz, the director of the Career & Technical Education area of the Curriculum and Instruction Department. The work-based learning initiative includes all levels of education within the school district. For those in elementary school, WBL takes the form of ‘Career Awareness,’ offering guest speakers, career fairs, field trips, and business tours. Those at the middle-school level are on the ‘Career Exploration’ track and can participate in job shadowing, mock interviews, field trips, and career mentoring. The high-schoolers are in the ‘Career Preparation’ level with internships and apprenticeships with local businesses, work simulations within their various classes, as well as learning about entrepreneurship and community service. The goal of these initiatives is to create learning experiences for Kansas students that will prepare them for success in the workforce, in particular in the high-wage, high-demand, high-tech, and critical needs occupations the state will need to fill in the near future. The De Soto program has partnered with the Kansas City-based Kauffman Foundation to connect with its Real World Learning initiative. The goal of both programs is to equip high-school graduates with Market Value Assets—skills recognized by business and industry to help students transition from school to work more seamlessly and with a greater likelihood of success and economic independence. “To provide our students with client-based projects or internships, we will need to partner with many businesses in our community,” Swartz says. For more information on the USD 232 program, go to www.USD232.org; for more on the Governor’s Council on Education, go to www.KansasRegents.org/ about/governors-education-council, and for more on the Kauffman Foundation’s RWL program, go to www.
