The term of ‘도서관(doseogwan 圖書館)’ means different from ‘library’ or ‘bibliotek’, each of which originated from ‘liber’ and ‘biblion’ signifying papers. ‘圖’ from ‘圖書館’ means a drawing, and ‘書’ means a book, letter and record. Libraries in Asia, therefore, keep not only writings on paper but also drawings and records on non-paper materials. That libraries in Korea play a role as museums is perhaps a natural consequence.

Cities in Korea are labyrint hine and highly mixed. Multiple functions are often performed in a single building, and single space is utilized for multiple purposes at the same time. This kind of urban diversity , however, doesn’t come easy for a library which needs to have many fixed shelves packed with books. This plan primarily aims to establish a library in Suseong-gu, Daegu, which can embrace diverse values , cultures and knowledge.

Facility

The library would diverge from its given and fixed usage and avail itself of versatile space to accommo-date varied purposes. The library is divided mainly into two parts, reading rooms (including book shelves) and offices. Then, the reading rooms are classified into two categories: one is a dynamic space for children and the other is a static space for the general public and special collections & archives. The third floor designed for general public-use stacks has drawable bookshelves,

The structure and shape of stacks change by space utilization.

Special collections & archives are located in the corridor of drawable stacks, which makes it easy to store and manage the books. All the spaces of stack rooms connected to independent vertical circulation and inner court benefit from day lighting and ventilation.

Drawable bookshelves surround the center court.

E-book reading room:

The entrance faces north so it can be directly connected to the nearby linear-shaped park. People would enter the library crossing over the moat. Both ends of the building have a staff entrance and security office monitoring a parking lot.

multi-purpose reading room which reflects the Korean urbanism may weaken its original function as a library.

Lobby: local residents can rest in the entrance hall and read magazines and newspapers. The hall is opened all up to the third floor and provides an expansive view. Electronic kiosks could be found right in the center of the lobby and an information center on the right side of entrance, with a security office on the left.

An E-book reading room grafted IT remedies the shortcomings. Using the library’s Wi-Fi, visitors can read e-books in real time, and also borrow them. Visitors upload their personal e-books on the system and read them in the library. Uploaded e-books will be deleted after a certain period of time.

Special collections & archives: books worth preserving are kept in special shelves on the fourth floor.

Roof-top garden: It will make up the lack of green fields on the base floor and relieve the heat from the industrial machinery room.

Access will be controlled, and reading will be restricted. The space is designed to house more books than a mobile rack and benefit from ventilation and humidity control by being located close to the industrial machinery room. UIA approved international Architectural Ideas Competition_04

Separate lighting is installed at the end of shelves which face the wall, so varied lighting and shadows can be provided to the building depending on bookshelves’ location.

The moat surrounding tthe library cools down its area and forms a promenade linked with the linear park. Center court inside the building not only lights the inner space but also gives natural ventilation by opening the skylight. Roof-top of the fourth floor is covered by dirt and grass to reduce the heat generated from the building. The façade of the library has a double skin.

The outer skin is a light curtain wall supported by a glass spider, and inner is glass lighting combined with bookshelves.

Drawable book-shelves surround the center court. When they are all put in, the court becomes an exhibit hall.

This glass lighting is only turned on when the bookshelves are put back against the wall.

Some of them shall be put outside for club activities or serve other purposes.

Inner space utilization changes the outer façade of the library.

When all the stacks are placed outside, it becomes a library.

The structure and shape of stacks change by space utilization.

On the other hand, office and reading rooms make a clean and transparent impression, decorated by a curtain wall method.

The size of the courtyard is decided by reflecting the interior space of building. Vegetation once removed for construction is stored and transplanted in the courtyard as landscape gardening. Gingko as a deciduous tree will give different moods in each of the four seasons. Moated piloties on the first floor will provide pleasant surroundings and openness.

Roof-top garden: It will make up the lack of green fields on the base floor and relieve the heat from the industrial machinery room. Reflect the existing context : Landscape, fountain, Pergola

It hits the ceiling first and then the indoor space, making subdued lighting. -Outer surface of the building has exterior lighting, which is installed on the spot where the bookshelves touch on the other side of the wall. When the bookshelves touch the wall, that is to say when they are pushed back, exterior lighting will be turned on outdoors. When pulled out, it’s turned off. +Sliding wheel- wheels of eight bookshelves only moves along the major axis of each shelf, which makes it easy to manage shelves and replace them.

Section B By locating the relativcly dynamic space on lower floors and static space with light air-conditioning on higher floors, natural ventilation becomes possible through the court.

The machine room is located on the fourth floor to casily manage the special collections and archives. Rain water is collected and purified here and sent to the areas where it is needed.
