Sometimes a dog can think that they are the dominant member of the family. This can lead to behavior problems such as acting out. There is an opportunity to create “Training Toys� that clearly define the roles of dogs and parents, while also providing an opportunity for fun interaction, creating healthier relationships, and stronger bonds. I researched basic information about dogs and got useful insights from interviews and observations. I made a real scale prototype out of fabric and tested it on a dog.
RESEARCH WHAT THEY LIKE AND DISLIKE
DOG’S LANGUAGE
Dogs like it when people pet their backs and bellies. But they do not like when people touch their noses and toes.
Showing its belly means obedience. The strength is a rule for order.
COLORS IN THEIR EYES
THE PLAY TO THE DOG
In dogs’ eyes, colors look different compared to what humans can see and they are almost color-blind.
Dogs take a time to understand the way of play. It should be proceeded gradually.

Nowadays, pet parents and dogs don’t have enough physical activity. What if I suggest that the dog’s clothes that make better physical interaction with their human parents?

IDEATION
The overall form was inspired by the bone shape. Since it is an outside activity vest, it doesn’t cover the dog’s body too much and create heat exhaustion. On the outer side, there are 3 handles so that the person could grab the dog easily and safely. On the inner side, a soft foam material protects the dog’s body. I used velcro as a fastener to make the wearing process easier and faster.

PATTERN DESIGN USING SOLIDWORKS
Before I started modeling, I tested paper mockup and measured the length of each arms using tape.
Based on the measured length, I made a pattern of the dog vest using Solidworks. It was easy since I could type the exact number.
FINALIZING MAKING HANDLE
USING FABRIC
For the handle, I made this silicon mold based on a hand crafted foam handle. I copied 3 of the same soft handles for the grip of the vest.
After the fabrication, I tested it on a real dog and observed how the dog feels. It didn’t seem uncomfortable and fit perfectly.

The ergonomic grips allow better handling when they are playing. 3 handles located in different positions and angles provide various postures. The athletic mesh inside of the vest makes it comfortable and cool.

Conclusion This was the first design project at ArtCenter College of Design. Thankfully, it went to the student gallery. From color selection to form development, it was difficult but I could finally figure it out thanks to my the classmates and instructors. I hope pet parents and dogs can enjoy outdoor activities easier and safer so that they maintain a happy and healthy relationship.
