FOCUS TRACKING GLASS Conceptual Product Design Project February - August 2013 Individual Work Tutor: TJ Kim
Abstract Sometimes we can’t locate where someone is pointing at. Especially when there are many objects or when a person is far away he or she is oriented in a totally different direction then they have a difficult time explaining with additional details. However, if we can display information on both user’s display using eye tracking technology and calculations, fast tracking of location is possible. I researched relevant technology and scientific principles which can be applied and referred to some similar product designs. I created a mock-up model using 3D printer and wore it myself. Lastly I researched applicability using personas and scenario method.

Laser Pointer
Coordinate System
Pros Pros Can indicate direction Easy to use easily
Pros Pros Can point to desired Efficiently covers large location quickly area
Cons Cons Difficult to locate Ambiguous expresdepending on other sion, language barrier person’s location
Cons Use of one hand, cannot point far away where laser point is not visible
Cons Consent must be established, difficult to be specific
POINTING SOMEWHERE WITH FTG
PRINCIPLE, TRIANGULATION
OBJECT INFRARED PERSON 1
GYRO
ESTIMATE BLUETOOTH
GYRO PERSON 2
Using Bluetooth to measure distance between person 1 and person 2, gyrosensor to measure angle between the two, and eyetracking to find direction of person 1’s glance with infrared sensor to measure distance of target object from person 1. If person 1 is looking at a target object, a device of person 2 calculates these information and let person 2 know the estimating location of target object.
“Look at THERE!” ... “AHA!”

Transparent Display
Stably rests on the ear and reduces gaps due to shaking. Familiar to the users using glasses shape. Securing space for various functions and battery and helping the user wear it stably as a weight pendulum. Foldable to maximize space and mobility. Unlike the original ear-plugging type, by using osteophony method it is more sanitary and respond faster to the environment. Provides information on where other user is looking at, augment reality, 3D and other such supplementary information through translucent display.

Referred to anthropometry website ‘Sizekorea’ to find out Korean adult’s average face area and incorporated it into design.
Created a sketch and applied adult standard size into ergonomic ratio, 1:1 scale.

01 She has been living in big family with full of love although her parents were working couple. She is warmhearted and trying to understand other people. 02 She has tendency to be indecisive because she thinks a lot. Sometimes she prefers someone makes decision for her. (like camera setting, make modes in FTG for some situation) 03 She thinks about education for a long time and has a passion very much. It will last for ever her life. (show many applications plan for education consistently because she will be principle (has a power to purchase FTG)).

According to this matrix, there are four factors scored high point. (Optimism, Values, Personality, Religion) Optimism - She may be willing to use of a device. Values - For her, functions of a device should be true to education and students. Personality - She may like if she can change something of a device for her.

Conclusion Eye-tracking technology is still used mainly for eye mouse, communicating with computers like a game, or as a marketing research tool for consumer analysis. However, I propose Focus Tracking Goggle (FTG) as a tool which allows people to communicate with each other by eye-tracking technology. FTG is not yet ready to use, because there is no technology which measures exact distance between devices yet. However, if this problem is solved in the near future, FTG can be complete and it will supplement today’s limitations and create new, diverse methods of communications and ultimate make our lives better.
