Sushant Singh’s Birthday

Sushant’s sister Priyanka remembers her ‘brother, pride and alter ego’

Priyanka Singh, Delhibased sister of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, remembered her late brother with a long nostalgic post on his 35th birth anniversary on January 21..

Priyanka, a lawyer by profession, took to Instagram to share a video featuring herself and Sushant, which is a collage of various photographs from their growing up years. Priyanka captioned the video, addressing her late brother as “my pride, my alter ego.”

She wrote: “My brother, my pride, my alter ego, from this day when you were born, we not only prospered as siblings but evolved to become best friends, dedicated companions; twins if you will, in our depositions; exploring life and it’s meaning, as fate would have it, we almost existed in perfect quantum entanglement.”

“In the past, whenever you left, you came back again and again; This time when you departed... you came back so strong that you dwell in each and every breath of mine; your deep, profound eyes, and benign innocent smile are my constant companion, so much so that your presence has become the background of my very thought process!!!” Priyanka added.

“But somehow I can’t hear you back... I pray, I entreat, Please, please, please respond, react, tease, scream at me if you must, B’coz the eventuality of your silence is too loud to bear, The thought that I may never see you in flesh and blood, is too savage a fear! Just tell me where to meet you, as you told me time and again, b’ coz there’s so much to tell you I can hardly refrain; I know it all sounds stupid, Alas, my Shona, this stupidity is my only hope defining my very existence now... In total desperation, your Sona di! Happy Birthday my Sunshine!!! #sushantsinghrajput #sushantday #ssrians,” she concluded.

Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput passed away on June 14, 2020 in Mumbai.

DO YOU REALLY NEED FREE MONEY FOR YOUR CHILD FROM THE GOVERNMENT?

Sandeep Ahuja

In the previous issue, we have elaborated upon the meaning and features of the RESP plan, and the worth of this unique saving initiative of the government is highly appreciable; yet the facts/statistics indicate that enough qualified people do not take full advantage of this wonderful plan.

Recognizing the importance of higher education for children, the government generously allocates funds to support parents in this endeavour through the Canadian Education Savings Grant (CESG) wherein it matches 20% of the money that parents deposit into an RESP for their child. As the intent is to help everybody irrespective of their socioeconomic background, the government has gone a step further and helps low-income families through Canada Leaning Bond. Through this, the government will deposit up to $2,000 in your child’s RESP in gradual instalments over the period of 16 years- $500 in the first year and $100 annually for the next 15 years. But ironically in 2018 alone, $4 billion of federal funds allocated to the CLB went unclaimed because an estimated 1.8 million children weren’t signed up to collect the benefit.

This is probably due to the fact that people are either ignorant of the higher costs of post- secondary education, or don’t have a clear idea about the application process of an RESP. As per Statistics Canada, the average cost of 1 year of undergraduate tuition in Canada nearly tripled from $2,333 to $6,191 between 1995 and 2015. As these costs can seem unaffordable for many people later, to ensure that their children get quality education and proper training for their career, parents need to start investing for their kids’ post- secondary education at an early stage.

The Registered Education Savings Plan (RESPs) is a regulated account that can be effectively used for saving money for your child’s postsecondary education of any nature viz. university, college or vocational school.

Now, as we have seen that the government makes a contribution to help you save for your child’s education, some people tend to believe that it is simply a way to get ‘free money’ from the government.

But is this the only reason why you should feel motivated to invest in RESP?

Certainly not! RESP is not only a way to get free funds from the government; it has numerous additional advantages that are quite appealing.

Your savings grow tax-free

The greatest feature of an RESP account is its tax-free advantage. The government doesn’t charge any tax on the investment earnings (as long as they remain in the plan). Furthermore, when your child needs to withdraw the money for his/her postsecondary education, the contributions you made are withdrawn tax free as well. Though the portion of government grants and capital gains withdrawn as Educational Assistance Payments (EAPs) are taxable, since they are taxed in your child’s hands who is a student, the taxable amount is negligible.

Number of investment options available

The RESP funds can be invested in a number of funds such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and GICs. While some plans let you decide how to invest your savings, others invest your money for you.

Help for low income families

To help people from low income families, the government provides additional grants. If your household’s net income is less than $97,069 (2020), you qualify for the additional Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG). Also as discussed above, if you are unable to invest for your child’s education due to low income, the government helps you through a unique resource called the ‘Canada Learning Bond’ (CLB) that was introduced in 2004. You are not required to make any contribution at all. The government will deposit up to $2000 in your child’s RESP in gradual instalments over the period of 16 years- $500 in the first year and $100 annually for the next 15 years. But that doesn’t imply that late registrants will get less benefit. You can claim CESG retroactively if you started the RESP later and missed the first few years of grants.

Kabir Bedi

says his autobiography ‘is not a kiss and tell book’

Veteran actor Kabir Bedi says his upcoming autobiography is not a kiss and tell book, but one that will reveal a lot of things new to readers with raw emotional intensity. He adds that he plans to release the book in summer this year.

The actor of international repute chose the Covid-induced lockdown last year to devote time and pen the book narrating his journey, ups and downs, achievements and tragedies.

“I have been wanting to write a book for a number of years and got the time to think about it during lockdown. I figured out how I wanted to tell my story, which is very important. It took me four months to write the book and then I revised it for the next two months,” Bedi told in an interview.

Throwing light on the contents of his book, the actor added: “It is the story of my life told through a number of stories. I think people will get a good sense of me as a person, my triumphs and tragedies, milestones, mistakes -- everything after reading it.”

He continued: “It is a very honest book. I have friends, family and fans in various parts of the world. So, I feel a lot of people would be interested to know my story, what I’ve learnt from life and the many things that happened on the way. It is a very fulfilling book for me and should be out before summer. ”

Autobiographies are expected to bare all. Is there anything that the author chooses not to mention in his book? Bedi paused for a while and replied: “This is not a kiss and tell book but I have talked with raw emotional intensity about the relationships that are known. It’s honest and vunerable and there will be a lot of things that will be new to the readers. I will be able to talk far more in depth about the book once it is announced.”

Last year has been different, as the pandemic has changed lives as well as our perspective towards it. How did the year treat him? “I feel very sorry for those people who suffered in this pandemic. For me, it has been a brilliantly great year because I spent the time writing my book and fulfilling a long-held desire. In fact, I worked harder during the pandemic than I normally work. Even though acting stopped, I did a lot of writing as well as recording for documentaries, commercials etc. So it has been a very productive year for me in many ways, ” the 75-year-old actor informed.

The year 2020 was special for the veteran actor also because it marked the Bollywood debut of his granddaughter Alaya F.

“I am delighted by Alaya’ s success in the industry. I think she is the most talented girl of the new generation. I don’t give her any unneeded advice. She has a mind of her own and knows what she wants to do. She has done it all on her own merit,” he said.

On the acting front, Kabir Bedi says he is open to working in web series as long as the content is good or the role that he is offered is interesting, which will allow him to utilise his acting skills and abilities. The 70-plus actor revealed that he keeps getting offers for the web, but is waiting for the “right story” .

Take the 7-day self care challenge

To be the best version of yourself requires you to practice self care on an everyday basis, and there is no better time to cultivate this habit than right now. Take the 7-day self care challenge and practice the following simple behaviours to care for your physical and mental wellbeing. 5. Fix your sleep cycle

yourself of the reward at the end, you can keep going.

If you can win the 7-day self care challenge, you can win at life by becoming your own best friend and being truly self reliant and self sufficient.

1. GIve yourself one goal to accomplish

Give yourself one small task to complete at the end of the day; this may be to water the plants or change the sheets- something you can do for no reward other than the satisfaction of doing it. Complete the task, and then take a minute to tell yourself you have done a great job, because you have.

2. Dress up and play nice

Wake up 15 minutes earlier than usual, or pick out your outfit the night before; wear the fancy pair of shoes you reserve for special occasions, or take some extra time doing your hair. Give yourself just a few more minutes than usual to dress in a way that makes you feel beautiful and spoilt. Remember to look great for yourself, so you feel great.

3. Go for a jog, or just walk

Move that body; exercise and get your heart pumping. Go for a jog at the park nearby or just take a walk to appreciate the flowers and trees and sky. Being outdoors is always refreshing for our minds that are generally contained within brick and mortar the whole day. If you get some sunlight, bonus point to you!

No matter how tempting it may be to watch another episode in the night or hit snooze the next morning, choose to make the healthier choice by sleeping at the right time and then getting eight hours of uninterrupted sleep.

6. Don’t just drink water, hydrate

The two sips of water when you are parched are not enough, you need to hydrate properly. Keep track of how much fluid you are consuming through the course of the day. Keep a water bottle next to you at the desk, and take a sip every time you see it.

7. Organise the space around you

Take a minute to fold the laundry, organise the papers on your desk, and put your essentials in the drawer after you are done using them. Disorganised and cluttered spaces around us are often the reason we cannot focus and our mind keeps on getting distracted, so clean up and allow yourself some mental peace.

4. Meditate for just 5

or before you go to bed, and meditate. This does not have to be yoga or guided meditation with an app. Simply sit back for five minutes to recount everything you’ve done throughout the day and what is on your mind.

Are you ready to care for yourself? Making plans is one thing, living up to them is another. While it can be hard to be consistent, if you remind

Kamala Devi Harris made history at the stroke of noon on January 20, becoming the first vice president of Indian descent and Joseph Robinette Biden made a call for unity as he became president of a nation in the throes of a devastating Covid-19 pandemic and the “raging fire” of national division.

The daughter of Shyamala Gopalan became the first Indian American, the first woman, and the first African American vice president, putting her a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Biden declared after being swearing-in, “Democracy has prevailed.”

And to the world, he said, “We will engage with the world again... we will not lead merely by the example of our power, but by the power of our example.”

Symbolically, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the court, gave her the oath of office before Biden.

Her husband Doug Emhoff held two bibles on which she swore, one of them that belonged to Regina Helton, whom she has called her “second mother”, and another to Thurgood Marshall, the first African American supreme court justice.

Biden in his speech noted that 108 years ago protesters had stood there to block women from demanding the right to vote, and said, “And today we mark the swearing of the first woman in American history elected to national office, Vice President Kamala Harris.”

Next, Biden swore on a hefty family bible that his wife Jill Biden held. Chief Justice John Roberts gave him the oath of office. The transfer of power went off peacefully as they assumed the presidency and vice presidency as mandated by the Constitution, without the feared disruptions.

Soon after the ceremony, Biden went into the president’s office in the Capitol to sign a series of orders nominating key members of his cabinet.

Donald Trump, who boycotted the ceremony, had already left Washington for his new home in Florida.

Two weeks after a mob of Trump supporters had attacked the Capitol, they stood on its west frontage to be sworn-in. The 25,000 National Guard called in to protect them ceremony

In historic rite, Biden, Harris

outnumbered the guests. Unlike in the past, people were kept away because of the Covid-19 crisis and security considerations.

A carefully controlled guest list of a few hundred that included former Presidents Barack Obama and George W Bush, former Vice President Mike Pence and other luminaries were at hand. The national anthem was sung by Lady Gaga, a pop singer and the national pledge of alliance was recited by a woman firefighter, who also displayed it in sign language.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, who had been one of the rivals of Biden for the Democratic Party nomination, acted as the emcee for the ceremony. Biden’s speech was put together by a team led by Vinay Reddy, his director of speechwriting.

Recalling Abraham Lincoln’s speech when he made the proclamation abolishing slavery, Biden said, “Today, on this January day, my whole soul is in this: bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation.”

He also quoted Augustine, “a saint in my church”, who “wrote that a people was a multitude defined by the common objects of their love” and asked, “What are the common objects we as Americans love, that define us as Americans?

“Few people in our nation’s history have been more challenged or found a time more challenging or difficult than the time we’re in now,” Biden said focusing on the Covid-19 pandemic and the raging disunity marked by the riot at that very spot.

“We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts,” he said.

Biden and Harris also visited the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and after that they were led in a formal procession to the White House.

There Biden signed a series of executive orders, mostly to reverse Trump’s actions.

Jessica Alba:

Always had imposter syndrome

Actress Jessica Alba has admitted that she suffered from imposter syndrome when she moved on from acting career and embarked on an entrepreneurial journey. “I’ve always had this imposter syndrome thing – and I always felt like I didn’t deserve to be here,” Alba revealed while talking about building her business on #StraightTalk, reports people.com. Impostor syndrome refers to the belief that one is not as competent as others perceive one to be. “I always felt like it was God, and luck and magic that had got me here. But I think being with my (producer Cash Warren]) over these years, he let me know, ‘Hey, it’s all the hard work you’ve always put in. You deserve to be here as much as anyone else.’ And over time I guess I’ve sort of let that sink in and marinate,” she added. Alba founded The Honest Company in 2012. The lifestyle brand become a leader in the natural baby category and clean products. She expanded the brand with the launch of Honest Beauty in 2015.

The actress credits her husband Cash Warren for helping her gain selfconfidence. “My husband has the mentality of, ‘I deserve to be here’ -- even though he is also a person of colour. He grew up in, as a minority, in a predominantly white Hollywood kind of environment; his dad being one of the few Black actors of his time,” Alba said, referring to her fatherin-law, Michael Warren. She continued: “He (her husband) always felt like, ‘if I don’t treat myself with that respect, how do I expect anyone else to treat me with that respect?’ And so that’s just the way he carries himself -- not entitled in a way that you normally sort of hear it -- but like, ‘I deserve to be here’.”

Caitlyn Jenner admits being closer to Kylie than her other kids

Reality TV personality Caitlyn Jenner says she shares a better relationship with make-up mogul Kylie Jenner than her other children.

Caitlyn has children Burt, 42 and

Cassandra, 40, with first wife

Chrystie Crownover, and Brandon, 39, and Brody, 37, with second spouse Linda Thompson. Caitlyn also has Kendall, 25 and Kylie, 23, with third wife Kris Jenner, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“Kendall’s off kind of doing her thing, and Kylie, like, I had dinner last night at Kylie’s house. We try to do that once a week, once every two weeks. I go over there and she always has these great meals - prepared, she doesn’t do them. ...

But they’re so good! It’s better than a restaurant,” Caitlyn said.

Caitlyn’s good friend Sophia

Hutchins often joins her and Kylie for their relaxing evenings together. “Kylie and Sophia get along very well. So (it’s) Sophia, Kylie and myself, just three of us, nobody around … just in the house - she has some beautiful homes. (We) just have a glass of wine and talk about stuff and this and that. And so from that standpoint, we’re a lot closer,” said the 71-year-old. Caitlyn said that Kendall is secretive. “Kendall’s not that - she’s always very kind of a little bit more secretive. We’re still very close, but it’s kind of harder to figure out, where Kylie’s more of an open book. Kylie is just the exception to the rule. I mean, she’s just - all the stars came together,” she said. Caitlyn also helped raise Kourtney, Kim, Khloe and Rob -- Kris’ children with late husband Robert Kardashian -- and she sees herself in Kendall than her other children. “She’s very athletic. We kind of both had the same attitude towards life. I get along very well with the two of them, but Kylie and I just seem to be closer most of the time,” she told Dear Media’s The Skinny Confidential Him and Her podcast. “With all my kids, I’m just very blessed. All my kids are great and they’ve all grown up to have their own lives. Now, sometimes, it gets a little tough when you’re sitting at the house, Friday night, and Sophia’s gone or whatever. And you’re sitting there going, ‘Wait a second. I’ve got 10 kids. I’ve got 18 grandchildren. I’m sitting here all by myself!’ Nobody’s called, and you’re looking at your phone, and shouldn’t somebody be calling me, you know? What, they all have their own lives? Yeah. Well, every parent deals with that. It’s nothing new,” she summed up.

The Australian media hailed India’s historic Test win at the Gabba in Brisbane on January 20th, terming the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar series win as one “for the ages”.

India became the first team to beat Australia at the Gabba in a Test match in 32 years and thus recorded a second consecutive series win Down Under. It was also India’s first ever win at this venue.

Setting realistic life goals may be key to well-being

Setting goals that are realistic and seem to be attainable may be key to your wellbeing and life satisfaction, scientists say. Wealth, community, health, meaningful work: life goals express a person’s character, as they determine behavior and the compass by which people are guided, according to researchers from the University of Basel in Switzerland.

It can therefore be assumed that goals can contribute substantially to how satisfied people are in life — or how dissatisfied if important goals are blocked and cannot be achieved.

Researchers conducted a detailed examination on how life goals are embedded in people’s lives across adult. The study, published in the European Journal of Personality, included data from 973 people between 18 and 92 years old living in German-speaking parts of Switzerland; more than half of the participants were surveyed again after two and four years.

The participants had to assess the importance and the perceived attainability of life goals in ten areas — health, community, personal growth, social relationships, fame, image, wealth, family, responsibility/ care for younger generations, and work — using a four-point scale.

The findings reveal that perceiving one’s personal goals as attainable is an indicator for later cognitive and effective well-being. This implies that people are most satisfied if they have a feeling of control and attainability. Interestingly, the importance of the goal was less relevant for later well-being than expected.

Life goals also hold predictive power for specific domains: Participants who set socialrelation goals or health goals were more satisfied with their social relationships or their own health. The link between life goals and subsequent well-being appeared to be relatively independent of the age of the participants.

Researchers also found that the goals that people value in a particular life stage depend on the development tasks that are present at this stage: the younger the participants were, the more they rated personal-growth, status, work and social-relation goals as important. The older they were, the more they rated social engagement and health as important.

“Many of our results confirmed theoretical assumptions from developmental psychology. Life goals were strongly determined by age,” said Janina Buhler, a PhD student at the University of Basel.

“If we examine, however, whether these goals contribute to well-being, age appears less relevant,” Buhler said. Hence, adults, whether old or young, are able to balance the importance and attainability of their goals, researchers said.

Every relationship has its ups and downs. While having these moments of crisis, it is important to identify the reasons behind them and act on them in a timely manner.

7 Solutions That Can Save a Relationship

By: Ritika Tiwari

Freelance Writer/ Blogger/ Content Strategist

While in the heat of the moment it might seem like it’s time to call it quits, these seven solutions can help you save your relationship and build an even stronger foundation.

1. Take time to communicate

Communication involves spending some face-to-face time, away from all the distractions, including your work and social media.

Listen to what the other person has to say instead defending yourself. Don’t interrupt until your partner has finished speaking. Avoid using phrases like “You always ..”, “I wasn’t wrong …” or “You never …”.

Such phrases show that you aren’t really listening and believe that you aren’t at fault. Be quiet, pay attention, nod often, and use your body language to show that you are listening.

2. Be Honest

When things go south, we tend to cover up our mistakes and justify our actions. But in fact, we should be doing the opposite.

If you have made a mistake, don’t hide it because of the fear of repercussions. Own up to it and tell your partner what really happened. While they may resent you in the beginning, they will appreciate your honesty and come to terms with the situation.

Also, it’s always better they hear it from you rather than someone else. 3. Prioritize your relationship

While it’s easy to get caught up in your own life, making an effort to focus on the relationship is one of the most important reasons why relationships thrive.

No matter how busy life gets, plan activities together and spend time out for each other. Movie night, date night, weekend getaways, and even small, thoughtful gifts can go a long way.

Give compliments and celebrate your special moments. Show that you still truly care.

4. Respect one another

There comes a time when you start believing what you do or think is more important. This is dangerous.

Relationships thrive on mutual respect. Respect your partner’s job, lifestyle, beliefs, principles, and opinions, even if they differ from yours. At the very least, spend some time to understand what your partner does and how they feel. That shows you’re making an effort out of respect.

5. Don’t let money drive a wedge between you

Issues with money in a relationship often lead to nasty fights and pointing fingers at the lifestyle of the other person isn’t unsupportive and not recommended.

If your financial situation isn’t good, then be ready to make some lifestyle changes instead of simply expecting the other person to change theirs. Sit together, and map out your financial situation with pure honesty.

Decide which person will be responsible for handling which costs and what would each person be willing to give up. Set some money aside for each of you to spend at your discretion. No one likes to constantly account for every single penny they spend.

6. Don’t fight over household chores

Most couples in relationships have work outside of their homes. Expecting one partner to take care of all household chores is unrealistic. Instead, map out your respective jobs while at home.

Often, there are chores that neither partner likes to take up. In such cases, be open to considering other options, or taking turns doing the chore in question.

This is how you can be organized and fair to one another, eventually avoiding any resentment building up over time.

7. Build trust

When a loved one does something unexpected that ends up hurting us, we feel betrayed and don’t trust the other person anymore. Trust is critical to any relationship.

If you and your partner don’t trust each other, make an effort to build it. Be consistent, truthful, and deliver on your promises. Don’t dig up old wounds. Consider everything you say as once you’ve said something hurtful, you cannot take it back.

There are always problems in any relationship. But if you pay attention and take some measures to resolve your issues, you can save your relationship. Be realistic, caring, understanding, and willing to do what it takes to fix your relationship.
