RegenAgorigins
Academicsourcesstatethat RegenAgoriginatedinthe USAwiththeestablishmentof the‘RegenerativeAgricultural Association’inthe1980sby RobertD.Rodale.Thegoalwas toreversetheharmtothesoil causedbyintensiveagricultural practices.Thedevastatingsoil erosionresultingfromlargescale croppingintheUSMid-West overthelast160yearsisan exampleofthis.
However,forthemostparthere inNZ,oursoilshavenotbeen degeneratedtoanywherenearthe sameextent.
Regenstrategiestoregenerate soilsincludecroprotation, plantingcovercrops,livestock integration,reducingsoil tillage,growingdiversepasture species,andremovingpesticides, herbicidesandnutrientinputs. Thesearemostlyallgood agriculturalpractices,andalotof ourpastoralfarmersalreadyapply severalofthem.
However,whatourNZ farmersseemtobeparticularly interestedinisgrowingdiverse
pasturespecies andchangingthe inputstheyuse. Itisthelatter thatIwantto addresshere.
Oneofthe claimsmade bysomeRegen commentators isthatapplying fertiliserisabadthingandthat farmingdoesn’tneedit!
Thisisclearlyfalse,andscience andexperiencetellsusso.You can’tremoveplantandanimal productsfromthelandwithout returningthenutrientsusedto growthem.It’sasimplesum, really.Ifyoutakesomethingand don’tgiveback,yourunout. However,it’scompletely unnecessarytoharmthe environmentanddegradethe physicalandbiologicalstateof thesoilbyoverusingfertiliseror applyingthewrongproduct.
Fortunately, solutionsareat hand.Wealreadyhavefertiliser productsthatdeliveressential nutrientstomaintainproduction withoutdegeneratingthesoil orwaterways. Analysis:
moneyissavedd. But mostimportantly, productionisnot compromised. Granulateddicalcic phosphateslike Fertco’sReplenish andKingPhossolve evenmoreproblems: productplacement ismoreaccurateand nutrientsdon’tendup wheretheyshouldn’t. Anotherexampleispolymercoatedurea(PCU).While traditionalnitrogenproductsare notoriouslypronetoleaching, PCUisnot.Thisisbecausethe polymer-coatingaroundtheurea granulereleasesthenutrients slowlyoverathreemonth period.Resultsshowthat 50%morepastureperKgof nitrogenappliedisgrown,so productivityisretainedwhile lossesarereduced.
Morenaturalfertilisersare anothersolution.‘SeaPhos’isa primeexample.Acollaboration betweenAgriseaandFertco, SeaPhosisadicalcicphosphate withsulphur,lime,andnaturallybrewedseaweedbiostimulants,all wrappedupineachgranule. Ofcourse,toavoidwaste andsoildegradation,aregular soiltestisamust.Butdon’t justtestforbasicnutrients. Testforsoilbiology,organic matterlevel,carbonlevel,and C:Nratio,andgetavisualsoil assessment(VSA)done.These arealleffectiveindicatorsofsoil health,andwhytheyarepartof Fertco’sCloverZoneprogramme, designedtoincreasesoilhealth andclovergrowth.
NZfarmersdon’tneed totakethedrasticstepof ‘goingwithout’fertiliser altogether. Withtheproductsand practiceswealreadyhave,and theinnovativethinkingwe Kiwisareknownfor,wecan solveourproblems.
So,Iwouldsuggestthat farmersandfarminginNZ wouldbebetterservedby anAnti-Degenapproach (avoidingdegeneration) ratherthanaRegenone (completeregeneration).
