Animalrescuehavenwith‘angels’

KatrinaThompsonlovingly referstoherowndogsasher “angels”.

Vada’sAngelsAnimalRescue Taurangagetsitsnamefromthese angels.

“Nevada(Vada)wasmyolddog andshewasthemainpackleader.I havefiveofmyownpersonaldogs andtheyaretheangels...Icouldn’t dothisjobwithoutthem,”Thompson said.

NevadaandMemphis(allnamed afterAmericanstatesandcities)were theoriginalshelpingtosocialise rescueddogs.NowThompsonhas Dakota,Dallas,NewHaven,Las VegasandNashvillewhoallhavea roleattherescue.

“Theyplayahugepart.Weuse themfortestingalotofthepound dogswegetwhoneedtobeaccessed forrehoming.Theybuildtheir confidenceup,they’retheonesthat showthemeverythingisokay.”

ThompsonandTashPearcerescue allanimalsinneed,includinghorses, onthe10-acre(4ha)propertyin Whakamārama.Theycurrentlyhave 14horses.

Pearcelooksafterequineand Thompsonconcentratesonpooch care.

Therearecurrently25rescuedogsat thepropertywithaboutanother50in fostercare–about95%oftheirdogs arefromthedogpounds.

LastmonthThompsonandPearce madetheharddecisiontoclosethe doorstonewintakesduetotheir numbersandveterinarybills. Morethan50dogsandpuppies cametothepropertyinMarchalone.

Financialcost

Vada’swasintheredby$16,800. TheypostedapleaonFacebook sayingtheywere“drowning”and askedforhelp.Thepleagenerated $10,000incommunitydonations.

“Thefinancialburdenisjust overwhelming.Weonlyrunon donations.Alotofpeopleseeusas abigrescueduetoournumbersand thinkwemustbebeingpaid,butno oneispaidhere.There’salotthatwe fundourselves.”

Thompsonsaidtheproblemof unwanteddogsandpuppiesisthe worstithaseverbeen.Notdesexing animalsandthecostsinvolvedhas seen“explosiveamountsofpuppies”, shesaid.

EnvironmentalcharityProjectParore ishostingapublicmeetingtodiscuss theproposed50-hectareexpansionof theJSwapKatikatiQuarryunderthe Fast-trackApprovalsAct.

TheFast-trackApprovalsAct2024isa permanentandmorestreamlinedprocess forobtainingresourceconsentandother approvals.ThebillwaspassedinDecember 2024andapplicationsfornewprojects startedfromFebruary.

ProjectParorechairmanDavidPeters saidthecharityhasresolvedtofocuson identifyinganyriskstothestreamsand forestsurroundingthequarryandmakesure therisksaremanagedormitigatedproperly. “Iftheycan’tbe,wewillopposethe

expansion.Thequarryliesintheheadwaters oftheUretaraStreamandontheedgeofthe conservationparkandourmainfocusison freshwaterhealthandbiodiversity.”

ProjectParoreiscurrentlyundergoing abiodiversityauditaroundthequarry includinganalysisonthethreeaffected watercourses.Theworkwillnotbe completedbythetimeofthemeeting,but ProjectParorewillsharetheirfindingswhen itis.

Peterssaidthemeetingisopentoalland willincludehearingfromJSwap,whowill outlinetheirplans,questionswillbeputto themfollowedbyquestionsfromthepublic. ThepublicmeetingisatStPaul’s PresbyterianChurch,MulganSt,onApril 23at7pm.

Katikati’sDaveHumePoolwillhavealongerswim season,betteraccessibilityandmorespacefor swimminglessonswhenitreopensforthe 2025/2026summerseason.

Themain33.3mpoolisbeingreconfiguredtocreatetwopools–a25mpoolandanew7mlearntoswimpool,whichwillrunata warmertemperature.

Theexisting,separatelearntoswimpoolwillalsobeupgradedto meetcurrentpoolsafetyandwaterstandards,andanewdisability hoistisbeingaddedtothemainpooltoenhanceaccessibility.

Waihī Beach- thenree Estuary path planunveiled

Adraftconceptplanforasharedpathway connectingWaihīBeachandAthenreehas beenreleasedbytheWesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncil.

Theplanincludesa3m-wide,355m-longboardwalk acrossWaiauEstuaryfromIslandViewtoAthenree, connectingfurtherpathandboardwalksectionsalong esplanadereservestocompletetherouteintoDr NorthMemorialReserveandPohutukawaDrive.

AkayaklandingandbeachaccessatAthenree, lookoutsforbirdwatchingandfishing,andcultural andecologicalconnectionsarealsoincludedinthe design.

‘AhiPātiki’isthenamegiftedtothepathwayby TeWhānauaTauwhaohapū,reflectingthehistorical andspiritualconnectionoftheareatothepātiki (flounder).

ThislinksbacktoNgāiTeRangirangatira(chief) HōriTūpaea,whonamedtheareaafterhisfavourite kai(food).

Councilisseekingfeedbackontheplan,beforeit issubmittedtotheBayofPlentyRegionalCouncil forresourceconsent.Iftheapplicationissuccessful, thentheprojectcangoaheadoncethereisfunding tobuildit.

“Thispathwaywillnotonlyenhanceconnectivity betweenthetwocommunitiesbutwillalsooffera uniqueexperienceforresidentsandvisitorstoenjoy thebeautyoftheWaiauEstuary,”saidcouncil’s cyclewaysmanagerScottParker.

“Thisisverymuchacommunitycollaboration project.Theconstructionhasn’tbeenfundedyet,but ifthereisenoughsupport,wehopetosecurethis fromexternalsources.”

Evacuationroute

Aswellasprovidingastunningwalkingandcycle route,thesharedpathwayisalsoseenasapotential emergencyevacuationrouteforthecommunity.

Ithasbeenapriorityinplanningdocuments–includingtheWaihīBeachCommunityPlanandthe

BayofPlentyRegionalCouncilLandTransportPlan –formanyyears.Thepathwayisalsoasectionofth WalkingandCyclingActionPlanlongtermTauran MoanaCoastalCyclewayProject.

Councilfirstconsultedwiththecommunityinlat 2021,whichshowedstrongsupportfortheidea.

“Sincethen,we’vebeenworkingonadraftconcep planwithmanawhenuaandotherkeystakeholders Nowwearegoingbacktothecommunitytomake sureitreflectstheirvalues,needsandexpectations.

“Byaddingabulkheadtodivideupthemainpool,wewillbe abletooffermorelearntoswimprogrammes,whichareatcapacity eachyear,”saidWesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncilreservesand facilitiesmanagerPeterWatson.

“Learntoswimprogrammesarevitalforbuildingwater confidenceandensuringsafetyinandaroundwater–especially whenweliveinadistrictwhererivers,theharbourandbeaches areapartofeverydaylife.Bycreatingmore‘learntoswim’space andextendingtheseason,we’recreatingmoreopportunitiesfor ikidlhilkill”

Improvements

ThepoolswillalsoberelinedwithaPVCmaterialandanew, safersandfiltrationsystemwillbeinstalled.

Otherimprovementsincludeheatingandinsulationinthe changingroomsandreceptionarea,newentranceandchanging roomdoors,newpoolcoversandupgradedCCTVcameras.

Theimprovementswillenablethepoolstorunforanextended season,fromSeptemberthroughtotheendofMayeachyear.

ThisfollowsmanyyearsoftheDaveHumeSwimmingPoolTrust developingtheconceptofanenclosedpool,withanewlinersystem toreducepaintingcostsandfrequency.

Theroofprojecttoenclosethepoolwasfactoredintocouncil’s 2021-2031LongTermPlan,butduetoescalatingcostscouncil agreedinOctober2024tofocustheirattentiononabulkhead, poolupgradesandanewlinersystem.

Funding

Theimprovementsarebeingfundedthroughexistingbudgets fromthe2023/2024financialyearandDaveHumePoolTrust funding.Thetrustwillbefundraisingfor30percentofthe upgradework,whilecouncilwillfullyfundtherenewalwork,such astheliners,poolcoversandfixingtheexistinglearntoswimpool.

“TheDaveHumePoolTrusthasplayedacrucialrolein drivingthisprojectforward.Theircommitmentandcommunity fundraisingeffortshavebeeninstrumentalinmakingthese upgradespossible,”saidWatson.

“Theseimprovementswillhelpfuture-proofthefacility,ensuring itremainsasafe,welcomingandsustainablefacilityforthenext generationofswimmers.”

Tominimisedisruption,constructionwillstarttheweekafterthe swimseasonclosesandwillbecompletedpriortoChristmas2025 (weatherandmaterialdependent).

Turningwasteintobuildingmaterials

Asoftfoodandbeveragecarton revolutionisunderwayin WaihīBeach.

BroughttolifebySustainableWaihī Beach,TeKuraTātahioWaihī|Waihī BeachSchool,andthePackaging Forum,thiscommunity-driven initiativeaimstotacklethe5000tonnes offoodandbeveragecartonsthatend upinNewZealandlandfillseachyear.

“Wehavebeenworkingtogetherto createaschemethathaslongevityand thecapacitytogrow,”SustainableWaihī BeachcoordinatorPipCoombessaid.

“Themorecartonswecollect,the morepackagingwewilldivertfrom landfill,andgiveitasecondlifeasa completelynewproduct.”

Bycollecting,cleaning,andrecycling theusedcartons,theschemeissetto transformtheliquidpaperboardwaste intosustainablebuildingmaterials.

Successfulrecycling

“Thecollectedfoodandbeverage cartonsareshredded,heated,and pressedintolow-carbonbuildingboards thatlooklikeplywood,”saidCoombes.

Shesaidtheprocess,doneinNew Zealanduses100%renewableenergy, eliminatestheneedforglue,resins,or

additionalwaterandrecyclesallwaste generatedduringproduction.

Toensuresuccessfulrecycling, communitymembersarebeingaskedto cutopenouttheircartons,cleanthem thoroughly,flattenthem,andkeepthe capson.

“Wecannotacceptpaper,glass,plastic, ormetal.Onlyfoodandbeverage cartonssuchasalternativemilkcartons, stockcartonsandjuiceboxes.”
