CANCER PREVENTION
Regular screenings can help your primary care provider detect cancer early so that treatment is most effective. Preventive mammograms, colonoscopies, and lab work can all be ordered through your primary care provider at an annual wellness exam. By having a wellness exam each year, your primary care provider can address health concerns such as poor diet, weight gain or loss, and stress—all of which can have a direct impact on your health. There are over 200 different types of cancer, and cancer symptoms can vary depending on the type. Generally, the most common symptoms include:
Unexplained pain
Unusual bleeding or bruising
Unusual weight loss
Lumps or skin changes
Unexplained bladder or bowel changes
Chronic coughing
The above symptoms are not necessarily warning signs of cancer, and may be caused by other health problems. Regardless, if you do experience these symptoms, do not wait to see your primary care provider.

Diabetes is a long-term condition in which the body has trouble controlling blood sugar and using it for energy. With Type 2 Diabetes, the pancreas does not make enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows the body to use sugar to fuel muscles and other tissues. Eventually the body makes too much insulin and blood sugar rises. High blood sugar is damaging to the body and can cause other serious health problems including heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

Today, about 1 in 10 Americans have Type 2 diabetes. Symptoms often start slowly. They can include greater thirst and hunger, frequent trips to the bathroom, and weight loss that happens without trying. The disease can also cause tiredness, blurry vision, slow-healing sores, and numbness or tingling in the feet or fingers.
If you or a family member have any of the symptoms above, please schedule a visit with your primary care provider for evaluation and testing. Your primary care provider can help support and guide you, and is a great source of information. They can help with:
• Development of a healthy eating and activity plan
• Teach you to test your blood sugar and record the results
• Recognize the signs of high or low blood sugar and what to do about it
• If needed, how to give yourself insulin
• Monitor your feet, skin, and eyes to catch problems early
• Where to buy diabetes supplies
• How to manage stress
Children are at risk too.
Childhood obesity rates are rising rapidly, and so are the rates of Type 2 diabetes in children. More than 75% of children with Type 2 diabetes have a close relative who has it, too. Shared habits, more than genes, are responsible for the increased risk.
Consider making healthy changes that benefit the whole family, including:
• Drinking more water and limiting sugary drinks
• Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables
• Take steps to make favorite meals healthier
• Going for a walk daily or engaging in physical play or sports

Occupational medicine focuses on the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses. Astria Health’s team is led by James Hebard, MD, MPH. He is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and has extensive expertise.
Physicians and providers trained in occupational medicine diagnose and treat work-related injuries much more effectively than most primary care providers. They are trained in Occupational Medicine, and stay current with federal and state regulations for workforce health and safety, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and others so they can create relevant treatment plans and perform regulatory examinations.
Occupational Medicine specialists can work directly with employers to keep businesses running and employees safe and healthy on the job. They improve workplace health through:
• Pre-employment physicals
• Drug and alcohol screenings
• Labor & Industry (L&I) exams
• Treatment of L&I claim patients
• Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals
• Work-related injury care
• Employer education to promote awareness and injury prevention

Write down the details of what happened. Be sure to note who was there, what the injury is, when and where the injury happened, and how it happened.
Get to the Astria Health Center at 1812 E Edison Avenue right away. Rapid Care, located in this facility, is open 7 days a week. Our Occupational Medicine physician, Rapid Care providers, or the Emergency Room staff at Astria Sunnyside Hospital, will help you open a Labor and Industries claim, assess your injury, and start a treatment plan.
Astria Health’s Occupational Health program can provide a number of services that can be used to prevent on-the-job injuries and unscheduled absences.
In Occupational Medicine, the focus is also expanded to the workplace. Certain medical conditions are considered emergencies because they can require advanced treatments, including surgery, that are only available
in a hospital setting. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s best to go straight to the ER or call 911. Wounds that don’t get better with time or recur may require the expertise of wound care specialists. Wound care specialists provide care and treatment of acute, chronic, and non-healing wounds by referral from your doctor. Acute wounds can include cuts from surgical procedures, animal bites and burns; while chronic wounds refer to pressure sores and diabetic ulcers.
In the Wound Care Center at Astria Sunnyside Hospital, our highly-trained staff provides expert care using state-of-the-art technology for acute and severe or chronic wounds. Our wound care specialists include a board-certified plastic surgeon, a nurse practitioner, and registered nurses who are specially trained in wound care. What to expect at an appointment
The first visit to a wound care specialist will include a thorough diagnostic analysis of the wound, the cause of the wound, and a discussion of issues that might obstruct healing. The provider will then schedule a series of visits, and with each visit, the wound will be reassessed and the treatment plan modified as needed.
Patients with certain health conditions that may make wound healing more difficult:
• Diabetes
• Congestive heart failure
• Vascular disease
• Incontinence
• Severe obesity
• Renal failure
• Nerve damage
• Venous stasis
• Osteomyelitis
• Peripheral artery disease
• Infections requiring IV antibiotics
• Types of wounds treated
Complex wounds including vascular ulcers, diabetic ulcers, radiation wounds, necrotizing fasciitis, arterial wounds, amputations, various types of traumatic injury, and some post-operative wounds may benefit from treatment in a wound care center.
A variety of advanced treatments and diagnostics that aid in the healing process of acute and chronic wounds are offered, including:
• Ultrasound
• Wound vacs
• Growth factor therapy
• Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
• Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. Astria Sunnyside Hospital is the only hospital in the Lower Valley with this therapy. This therapy delivers greater amounts of oxygen to the body’s tissue via both the circulation system and the tissue, which promotes healing. Conditions frequently treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include:
• Diabetic foot ulcers
• Wounds with bone infections
• Non-healing wounds due to radiation injury
