A MESSAGE FROM SUNNYVALE RECREATION
After a historically challenging 2020, we are ready and eager to celebrate this new year with you! Let’s get crafty, learn new skills, get our bodies moving and keep looking forward together. We may still be 6 feet apart, but we are never alone when we are learning, reading and recreating! Our Sunnyvale Library and Recreation Services team continues to work hard providing a variety of safe classes and activities to keep you and your family healthy and engaged. In 2020, our team jumped to the task of developing safe and creative new programming including teaching virtual classes, pivoting the Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League to an instructional format, operating the Sunnyvale Swim Complex with new aquatics programming and partnering with the Sunnyvale School District to offer distance learning pods. In 2021, we are staying creative with outdoor and virtual classes while we patiently wait for traditional programming to become a safe option once again. Our team is busy planning summer including Camp Sunnyvale and Sunnyvale Splash programs as well, so watch for the schedule to be released in early February 2021. Please check out all the possibilities for this winter and spring in the following pages of this guide. This year, you will see a lot of progress around Sunnyvale! The brand new Washington Park Swim Center is scheduled for completion in Spring 2021 and we hope to see everyone there for recreational swim this coming summer. We will also be breaking ground on the Fair Oaks Park Renovation Project, which includes the Magical Bridge Inclusive Playground. The City Council has approved a design for the new Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center which will then be prepared to go out to bid for construction and opening in early 2024 along with renovations to Lakewood Park. Local artists and residents alike can look forward to a number of new public art projects, including painted utility boxes, sculptures and murals, all of which are made possible through the newly approved Master Plan for Public Art. Our goal is to create experiences and spaces for everyone in our community. We hope you find something that fits your needs and helps you reach your goals for 2021 and beyond. Please feel free to send us your program ideas and questions at recreation@sunnyvale.ca.gov. Sincerely, Cherise Brandell Director of Library and Recreation Services
