Preface Selfies are all the rage these days and I even find myself tempted to snap a few when I’m in the mood. It’s fun to turn the phone around, take a picture of oneself, capture the perfect moment and the ‘perfect portrait’. When traveling alone, why not use the selfie option to help you remember those unforgettable experiences in faraway places. Sharing selfies online and commenting on them, ‘liking’ them, adding them to our endless virtual dialogue in cyber-space can be amusing, even interesting. However, there is a limit. The old line about everything in moderation still applies. The key is how we use our smartphones to capture and present our images, how we use selfies and how we are affected by them.

Human beings were created and evolved to live together in society; to interact, to create, to form relationships, to enjoy and build the world we live in. We are here to establish our social bonds and our culture. In this sense, true connection is the key. I believe we cannot survive as individuals or as a society without this essential bond and without real connection to the people around us. We also cannot survive if our idea of ourselves is based on a false sense of identity. Therefore, I see the selfie (and smartphone) problem as related to our nature as social beings. Taking selfies for fun seems unimportant or harmless by itself, but through the isolation that it causes, it is connected to some wider social and personal problems. In my opinion, if people focus excessively on themselves, on their image and on their virtual worlds, they may develop the emotional issues shown in the research, and this can lead to other problems: selfishness, alienation, loss of real communication and social connection, and even political problems as people withdraw into cyber-space. All this could damage our lives, society and the world overall. Therefore, my brand will attempt to deal with the selfie phenomenon and encourage true connection and the true self.

Last summer I spent 50 days traveling in Europe. This is where my concept was born. When I got back to the States, I started work on this project with the trip always on my mind. While there, I walked a lot, ran everywhere, ate at all the good restaurants, did numerous drawings of the architecture and scenery, wrote down every unforgettable moment and took huge numbers of photographs. It was a happy and pre-

cious experience, never to be forgotten. However, I remember being annoyed at the huge crowds taking endless numbers of pictures whenever I visited the famous architecture, the famous places and the exquisite statues. When I encountered the Mona Lisa at Le Louvre, I couldn’t get close to her and could only take pictures of everyone’s mobile phones (while they were taking pictures of her.) So I started to consider the problems of

taking so many pictures. As I thought about it more and more, I realized that there were many interesting issues related to people who obsess over their photos and just take many meaningless photos rather than enjoying the moment, and many people ignore these issues. So I decided to focus more on this problem that so many people have though so few of them realize it. 11

13

Taking and sharing selfies can be a way of communicating which might cause loneliness.

14

Brainstorming wall When approaching my subject (‘taking pictures’), I first divided it into two parts. The first part compared and contrasted ‘official’ and ‘unofficial’ photographs as well as personal and political photographs. The second part looked at the difference between past and current amateur photography and distinguished between photographing special events versus daily life. While brainstorming, I came up with some interesting ideas which led to three potential topics for the final project: 1. Citizen journalists. They are local and not well-organized but can have a lot of influence through social media and blogs. Also since they operate “under the radar,” they focus more on what they are doing rather than promoting themselves by hiring high-level graphic designers or marketers. My question was ‘how can I help promote the self-published independent press?’ 2. Taking too many selfies. Taking and posting an excessive number of selfies can lead to mental and emotional disorders. These days we see selfies everywhere on social media sites. But are they necessary? And is this habit healthy? Why do people hunger for someone else’s attention? How can I help people stop taking and obsessing over meaningless selfies? 3. Live your life without a camera. We often see people using their smartphone cameras to capture a beautiful or unforgettable moment. However, sometimes they cannot actually enjoy the moment because they are too busy taking pictures of it. Although they might be standing in front of a beautiful mountain landscape, a famous celebrity or a scenic, breathtaking ocean view, people only look through the tiny screen on their phone, snap a huge number of pictures and then walk away. I am not sure they even see what they are looking at with their own real eyes. To experience the world without a camera (or smartphone) would be a better, more engaged way to live. How can I make people put their camera or smartphone down and enjoy the moment? After I considered these three topics, I finally decided that the first one is too related to politics, so it didn’t seem appropriate or like something I wanted to do. Considering the second and the third topics, I realized that although they seemed different, they had some possible common themes. I ended up choosing the ‘selfie’ topic, but the idea of living one’s life beyond the smartphone (idea #3) still influenced my final concept.

Brand Exploration Brand Naming Regarding amateur photography these days and especially ‘selfies’, I feel like it is often about the ‘real’ and the ‘fake’, especially on social media. We don’t know what ‘real’ is anymore because it is so easy to modify photographs and improve them using Photoshop or other software, and people can alter pictures of themselves to seem more ‘beautiful’ or ‘glamorous’. However, it creates a false image, and it has some effects on people’s mental health as they get obsessed with endlessly ‘improving’ how they look. Moreover, it reflects the tendency these days to care too much about how one looks and what our ‘friends’ on social media think about our appearance. In many cases, people want to show off when they feel that they look better than others, but it can lead to serious emotional problems, as the research points out. Based on these ideas, I started with concepts relating to ‘real’ and ‘me’. I brainstormed many similar words and ideas and ended up with about twenty brand names. However, since my goal for this project was to encourage people to take fewer selfies and enjoy life more directly, I finally chose ‘selfie’ and ‘less’ and then made the one word brand name : “Selfie-less.” -Real Me Real : Actual, Fact, True, Genuine, Honest, Authentic, Unfeigned, Realistic, Pure Me : I, Person, People, Human, My, Myself, Self, Ego, Personality, Identity. - Happy selfie - Smile selfie - Picture me - Pic me - Pic together - It’s me - Documenting - Snap it / Snap me - We are all star - Touch - In to the Screen - Real me - Inside out

- Selfie less

- Selfie + lessness - Unselfie - Selfie Actually - Fact-it - Genuine me, Authentic me - Without me / Without selfie

21

The Goal The goal of my concept is to re-connect people to the real world and real life, and by suggesting alternative hobbies which require communication and unity, lead people to having healthier lifestyles. By creating a mental health treatment brand for selfie addiction, I want to inform people about the issues and also provide solutions and alternatives. The total goal of my brand is to educate, raise awareness and treat people. The treatment center itself will not be a serious medical care center like a mental hospital. It will be friendly, light-hearted and educational. Also, I eventually want to let people know this problem can include other habits related to smartphones. I will recommend healthier ways to live, to reconnect with society and to enjoy daily activities and life in general beyond the gadgets. All services and treatments at the center will be based on the idea that we need connection to the real world and real people, and we need to escape from the lonely and isolating virtual world. 22

Background

26

The smartphone and its functions have made our lives more convenient but have also brought problems: addiction to computer games, overuse of the internet, hours spent social networking and of course, the selfie phenomenon. The ‘smart’ gadget makes people spend their quality time with machines rather than with the real world or real people, and in the worst cases, often causes people to isolate themselves, with some consequences for mental and social health. If people used these things more moderately, perhaps it would have not became a problem, but there are many people who overdo it, and nowadays, it is becoming a serious issue. (In fact, we might not know yet how bad the problem is or what all the negative effects are of these gadgets.) There are many aspects to the smartphone problem, but for this project, I decided to focus on selfies because I believe there is less awareness about it than about computer games and internet addiction. There is a lack of understanding of the danger of taking selfies, and I want to address that lack. Through my research, I found that excessive selfie-taking can be related to mental and emotional problems like narcissism and obsession. We all know that taking selfies is a fun activity; however, through my research for this brand, I learned that if it is done excessively and obsessively, it can lead to serious mental disorders and possibly to social problems. Some people might think this is not a serious problem like drug addiction or plastic surgery addiction because selfie obsession doesn’t leave a mark on our bodies. According to some experts, it is a mental problem but it is still rated as less important than other addictions. However, I think it is time to pay attention to this new addiction before it gets more serious and widespread. Additionally, there are many clinics for mental health treatment nowadays, but my brand will feature specialists in selfie addiction as well as other internet use based-mental disorders. This will be a big differentiator which makes the brand competitive. 27

Strengths

- To create opportunities for people to get mental health treatment for selfie-related disorders. This is not a mental hospital. This is a mental care center. The atmosphere is lighter and the patients can receive the treatment more quickly than at hospitals and also feel more comfortable. - To provide personalized counseling programs. Each person needs different specialized care. So the program can be divided into group counseling, individual counseling, phone counseling and on-line counseling.

SWOT

Opportunities

- New market exploitation: there is no other organization like Selfieless, so we could be a leader to similar brands in the future. - The organization’s scope can be expanded to social media addiction in the future, so it can be said that the brand has development possibility.

28

Weaknesses

- The word ‘selfie’ could be a limited object for a mental health organization. It is very specific. There are a lot of causes of mental problems but my brand is limited to ‘Selfies’. - Personalized treatment can be costly. It is good for the participants but it requires a lot of money and time.

Threats

- Due to the lack of knowledge and awareness of selfie obsession, it is not widely understood that taking selfies may be connected to serious mental health issues, so my brand may not be taken seriously at first. - People might not feel comfortable with us connecting of the words “selfie” and “obsession.”

29

Audiences

She spends entire weekends doing this. - Even though she has more than 1000 followers, she doesn’t feel confident and feels insecure. - She knows that taking selfies is a waste of time, but she cannot stop it because the number of Likes makes her feel like she is a celebrity.

Occupation : A counselor in a mental health care center. Free time : Reading books or meeting friends. Social networking : Facebook and Instagram but barely uploads her pictures. - She enjoys taking selfies and other pictures but not often. - When she feels like she looks good, she takes selfies and shares the pictures. - When she uploads her pictures, the number of Likes is not important. - She is worried that her son would be addicted the smartphone. - She really wants to help people who are suffering from loneliness. - She prefers group counseling to phone counseling because it is more effective, and it builds community among selfie addicts.

32

Stakeholders Derek (A web developer) 37, Selfie Application Developer. He is a web developer and he invests his time and money in developing selfie applications. He understands that taking selfies is a very popular activity these days and wants to make money off the phenomenon. People might want applications which make their selfie pictures more beautiful. He also likes taking selfies and sharing them via his social networking account but not as frequently. He thinks taking selfies is just for fun and enjoyment. He would not believe that selfies are connected to mental health issues because he believes he can control it himself so it cannot be a problem.

Sarah (a mother) 38, A pre-counselor. She is a pre-counselor and wants to work at a mental health treatment center. She loves people and wants to help them to overcome their problems. Furthermore, her son has just recovered from selfie addiction, and she has become interested in mental health problems related to Internet and smartphone use as a result. She believes that technology has brought both advantages and disadvantages; one of the disadvantages is that it makes people isolate themselves. So she favors selfie-specific counseling programs and treatment.

Stephen (A researcher) 32, A Psychologist. Stephen is a psychology researcher and interested in new phenomena. Recently he has become fascinated with the effects of technology in society, and selfie-taking is one of his related interests. He is trying to write an essay about taking selfies and its connection to social problems, interaction, communication and to emotional disorders so he needs data. If possible, he would like to contact the Selfie-less organization for data or to interview the participants.

Potential Competitors

34

Main Competitors

Community Reach Center is a top-tier mental health provider in the northern metroDenver area. Community Reach serves all ages, from the youngest infant to the most senior citizen. All counseling services and therapeutic support groups are provided in a confidential and supportive atmosphere, with the goal of empowering you to live productively, independently, and improve the quality of your life. Bilingual services are always available upon request. dolescent Counseling Services is proud to offer four comprehensive programs: Oncampus counseling, Adolescent substance abuse treatment, Communist counseling and outlet. They focus our work exclusively on teens and their families, making sure we’re providing continuity of care for all of their emotional & social needs. Additionally they also offer extensive community education and a sophisticated internship & training program for future licensed therapists. The Children & Family Counseling Center at Youth Haven offers a wide array of individual and group counseling services to adolescents and adults to treat a range of behavioral and mental health issues, as well as assist in solving personal and interpersonal difficulties, improving relationships and promoting healthy family dynamics. These three competitors are similar to my brand but also slightly different. One of the big differences is that my brand is focused on selfie obsession. Due to the future development of technology, similar obsessions which are related to these devices (and others) will emerge, and I think this will continue to be an area for more specialized treatment than just normal therapy. So my brand will be developed in that field.

35

Tone The “Selfie-less brand is friendly, warm, positive, healthy and accessible to people who need mental health treatment due to selfie obsession, or if they need help finding community or connecting with real friends or they just want healthy alternatives to a social-media lifestyle. The Selfie-less mental health programs will be managed seriously and professionally, but the vibe will be friendly and light-hearted, so the participants can feel comfortable, not alienated. Also the friendly atmosphere will encourage people who might hesitate to join my brand. Lastly, I will encourage a healthier, more engaged, lifestyle overall by suggesting dietary tips, hobbies and activities connected to local communities and organizations.

Three Keywords Friendly : Since my brand provides mental health treatment, I wanted to create a friendly atmosphere that makes the participants comfortable. So by using a friendly, accessible image, I want to encourage people to come to my brand on their own, and I also hope they feel that Selfie-less is a good friend whom they can talk to about their problems and get real solutions. Moderation : Everything is best in moderation. Endless posting and modifying of selfies on social media are not examples of moderation. The Selfie-less brand will encourage people to keep moderate and healthy life styles. Connection : Selfies illustrate people’s desire to connect with each other, but the problem is that they sometimes believe that the cyber-connection is more important than a real one. So Selfie-less will make people more connected to the real world and friends.

Messages and Drivers Main Message:

Taking too many selfies can be linked to the development of emotional issues, but people can overcome the problem though mental health care programs and healthy living alternatives. By suggesting moderation and healthy lifestyles, this brand encourages people to put down their cameras, step out of ‘cyber-reality’, see their true selves, hang out with their real friends and enjoy the moment.

Sub-Messages:

1) Encouraging people to see themselves without a camera lens, so they can find out how beautiful they are without ‘selfie faces’ and Photoshop adjustments. 2) People can recognize that the number of followers and likes they have should not express their self worth. I want to help them focus on their true personality, talents and connection to offline community. 3) People can learn that there are many important and enjoyable things in life that can be experienced without their cameras.

Poster Final The three words ‘SEE, LIE and SELF’ all come from the word SELFIE. Endlessly modifying and posting selfies and obsessing about the number of likes are not examples of healthy behavior. Moreover, Selfies do not represent the true self; they are fake. The title is SELFIE but behind the title, there are hidden meanings : See, how beautiful you are; It’s a lie that the numbers of likes on your selfies equals your self worth, and enjoy your self without your camera.

The posters will be presented in public places such as bus shelters, subway stations and waiting rooms. Even without the models in the posters, the titles and the design elements (photo frame, square and the cross hatch) can be used independently. For instance, if they are placed on a mirror, the viewer can see themselves and reflect on the meaning of selfies and why Selfie-less is important.

Deliverables #1. Short Video Two people are better than one Life is full of activities that are better when you are with someone. This film will present fun and funny images of people doing things both alone and together and will promote the idea that together is the best. The point is to stop people from being isolated. Story board : The movie is short and emphasizes the concept that “two are better than one.” It starts with the title and some scenes show how it will be better; for example ridding seesaw, playing cards, waiting movie at a theatre, helping disabled person and birthday party. At the end of the movie, the phrases “Two are Better than One” and “Put the phone aside and enjoy the moment with friends.” appear in sequence and lastly, it shows the logo selfie-less. I made a little bit of movement for the icons and typography; for example, they appear and disappear, move from left to right or vice versa (or from top to bottom and vice versa). When the images change, the screen will go black and then switch to the next picture with a camera click sound, like when we are taking photos. The background music is “The Lucky Once” by Tim Myers, which is very cheerful and light-hearted.

When the movie is viewed on mobile phone or laptop, users can apply their selfie image to the figures on the screen. (An application similar to that used by JibJab and other similar card/video making sites will add the users’ selfie to the movie.)

67

68

This movie can be shared via social networks like Facebook, Instagram and Youtube, which will be a fun activity.

69

The entrance of the Selfie-less event

70

Deliverables #2. Event The purpose of the event is to encourage people to enjoy taking selfies. We want to show that taking selfies can be fun, but doing it too much can lead to emotional problems such as narcissism and obsession. So I want people to learn that this is a fun activity if they enjoy it moderately. Moreover, I also want to promote non-selfierelated behavior and activities at the event to encourage people to be healthier both mentally and physically.

71

Healing section When people go to the healing section, they will see four video screens attached to a center wall structure. Each screen will show videos made by people who had once been addicted to taking selfies. They will talk about their selfie obsession and how they finally overcame the problem. The videos will show the process from before becoming addicted to finally overcoming it.

72

“Culture creates validation and insecurity.”

“I did everything in my power to prove to the world that ‘Hey, I’m important’…Even with all these followers, I don’t know what is real and what is not….I obsessively checked the like count for a full week since uploading it, … Only reason we went to the beach this morning was to shoot these bikinis because the company paid me and also I looked good to society’s current standards...took over 50 shots until I got one I thought you might like, then I edited this one selfie for ages on several apps.”

73

Private section In contrast with this public event, taking selfies is a sort of private behavior, so I want people to think about the private meaning of selfies while they are here. There will be two rooms and people can go inside however they want (alone or with friends). One of the rooms will be decorated like a normal bedroom with a desk, a chair, a book shelf and a mirror, and the other will look like a bathroom. The rooms’ designs reflect the usual preferred places to take selfies. In the room, the participants can take selfies or photos alone or with their group. They also have the option to send their photos to the photo wall screen outside the private rooms to share with other participants. Furthermore, if they want, they can be interviewed and the interview will be filmed. They will be asked some questions related to the selfies experience (frequency of use, how long, if they think it’s healthy or not and so on.) They can also choose to be anonymous or not; this selfie ‘confession video’ will then be sent to the confession monitors, so all participants can share their private experiences or thoughts (if they wish to.) However, there is a time limit on the rooms,so people can only use them for a few minutes. We want to emphasize that selfie obsession and the related disorders are caused by an extended focus on oneself and isolation. I want to make people aware of this fact and give them options for a healthier life and work.

Healthy Life section In the Healthy life section, I will suggest some healthy behaviors like eating better food, having more stimulating hobbies and enjoying a more positive and engaging social life. This part of the event is divided into three sections. 1. Healthy food and healthy hobbies : To eat nutritious food is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy life. So the motto will be “healthy food, healthy life and healthy selfies.” The participants will get recipes and information about a better diet; we will also offer them fresh juices and salads, and there will be lots of information available about diet and nutrition. The participants can take photos with each other while they eat, and then they can share the photos. Moreover, the participants can get information about healthy hobbies and will be able to sign up for various clubs and meet-ups; for example, cycling, music, hiking, photography and so on. I will invite these kinds of local groups from San Francisco and the Bay Area and they can promote their clubs. It encourages people to do physical activities and to spend less time only taking selfies.

78

Healthy food Healthy life Healthy selfies

79

Healthy Life section 2. Movie Section: People will be able to watch a short movie, “Two people are better than one” (Deliverable #1). The movie points out that there are so many things that are impossible alone and/or even better with others, such as going to a party, playing card games, playing frisbee, etc. Even taking selfies is more fun when done with friends, so I want to suggest that people take selfies with someone they care about. The movie will feature icons of objects and people but the faces will be blank, and I am thinking of using digital sampling cameras to add the participants’ faces into the film. It will work like this: when participants stand in front of the movie screen, there will a video camera and the camera will automatically capture the viewers’ faces, and the faces will then appear in the movie. It might be fun for the spectators!

80

You can be a main character of this movie.

81

Healthy Life section 3. A non-selfie Activity: I want to let people do a fun alternative activity related to creating an image of themselves that is not a selfie. People can draw their own portraits by using art materials, or the staff of this event might draw the participants’ caricatures. Also I hope people draw whatever they want, such as blue faces or rainbow hair to encourage them just to have fun and not take it too seriously (usually selfie addicts are too serious about their appearance). The participants can bring the drawings home or attach them to the post card wall, so the other participants can see them.

82

The participants can draw anything they want. I want to let people know there is no one standard for beauty.

83

Deliverables #3. Food Truck This idea is related to the first deliverable (healthy food and healthy behavior). At the event, I will provide some healthy food and nutritional information. The truck has three main menu items: the “Say Cheese Burger,” the “Smile Together Salad” and the “Selfie Coffee.” (The “Say Cheese Burger” is a healthy version of the common cheeseburger.) The three words ‘cheese, smile and selfie’ encourage people have a smiling face when they have their photo taken, so I just used these expressions to brighten up the menu. The menu connects to my topic and also it contains humor, so I think this idea is appropriate to this concept. On the packaging for the food, I will include nutritional information along with some information and facts about selfie obsession so the customers can understand both the intention of this brand and the food truck. By using the Selfie Food Truck in San Francisco, I can promote the event and the motto ,”Healthy food, Healthy communication and Healthy selfies.” The truck will show up at several locations in the weeks before the event. Furthermore, people can find out its location through the Selfie-Less social networking accounts. Also the participants can share photos with the truck via the accounts.

84

At the Selfie-less food truck, people will be have access to healthy food but also healthy interaction with others, which promotes connection to the real world.

88

Conclusion In the past, we could not imagine that taking selfies could be a problem but now we know that it is. Much research has proven this, and now it is time to treat the people who are becoming addicted before it gets worse. The aim of my brand is to re-connect people to the real world and real people and disconnect them from virtual reality. Taking many selfies and sharing them do not lead to real connection and communication, so I want to help people out of their virtual world and back to the things that bring mental and social health. To treat them in a friend ly manner, I want to educate them light-heartedly by providing information about the selfie obsession, raising people’s awareness of this issue and suggesting healthier lifestyles. These purposes will all be enacted at the Selfie-less event, demonstrated by the “Two are Better than One” movie and emphasized by the Selfie-less food truck. The Selfie-less brand, which will have a unified design concept and implementation, will make people connect to friends, society, health and the things that matter. It will also help them feel less lonely and isolated, which is the problem that led them to taking selfies in the first place. I hope people become more focused on social interaction and their real lives and rediscover the satisfaction and fulfillment of experiencing life beyond the smartphone.
