ARCHIVED PROCESS BOOK This was an exciting, challenging and slightly crazy-making project. It seemed easy to do at first because the overall goal was to create consistency in the design, but it was difficult to pick an appropriate concept before executing it. Especially I had a hard time choosing a topic, and I couldn’t decide between two different ideas. When I finally picked the concept, it was a bit late and that created some difficulties for the final execution of the deliverables. I’ve learned that graphic designers have to have to be able to make quick and appropriate decisions. Moreover for the design part, I’ve learned that branding is much more than just logo design. It’s about creating unified concepts using typography, graphic elements and photography. I cannot be 100% satisfied with this project, but I’m happy to have learned a lot from this class.

DAVID LYNCH BIOGRAPHY David Keith Lynch is an American director, screenwriter, visual artist, musician, actor and author. He is well known for the unique and surreal style of his films and has had an influential career. Many of his works disturb, scare, or mystify the audience, and he creates an ambiguous boundary between the conscious and unconscious and between dreams and reality. When he was at the Pennsylvania Art Academy, he made his first short film, Alphabet (1968). After graduating from school, he made a 16mm short film called The Grandmother (1970). He then was inspired to make a movie about a young couple who have a deformed child. This project took from 1971 to 1977 to finish and then was released as Eraserhead (1977). After Eraserhead, Lynch gained attention in the film industry with The Elephant Man (1980). Blue Velvet (1986) and the Twin Peaks series made him famous as the king of cult movies. Wild at Heart (1990) and Lost Highway (1997) are also two of his major films. Lynch was influenced by European filmmakers and then American directors, and he admires the “get down and thrill your soul” spirit he sees in the European directors. Lynch has mentioned his admiration for Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, Werner Herzog and Jaques Tati and has also cited Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls (1962) as an influence on his work. Regarding Lynch’s work, leading film critics Le Blanc and Odell state that “his films are so packed with motifs, recurrent characters, images, compositions and techniques that you could view his entire output as one large jigsaw puzzle of ideas.” One of his striking techniques is the usage of dreams and dream-like imagery and structures. His work also shows a surrealistic ethos, and most of the time the stories blur the lines between dream and reality, with some focus on crime, deviant behavior and dark humor. Lynch believed that his movies also have a ‘spiritual’ quality.

FILMOGRAPHY Highlighted movies: Blue Velvet (1986) Twin Peaks (1992) Mulholland Drive (2001) Lost Highway (1997) Inland Empire (2006) Wild at Heart (1990) Lynch’s films include elements of horror, disturbing thrillers, nightmares, surrealism, the supernatural and characters with split personalities or even mental illness. These themes appear in a situation that might seem normal or like “daily life.” Lynch also sets most of his movies in innocent 1950’s-style America but with a frightening and violent background. People in the movies seem ordinary, but at some point, the stories suddenly turn to their dreams, unconscious and uncertainty. The films chosen for this festival represent these themes and ideas, and they contain many of Lynch’s most famous characters and scenes.

1. Research - About the Festival
POSITIONING / HISTORY OF FESTIVAL This festival will highlight the significance of Lynch’s career and how important he is for modern movies and pop culture. And he will be introduced as a director who originally had cult popularity but then became an influence on contemporary TV and movies. The festival will also show the audience the weird nightmare world of David Lynch and try to consider his vision and unique style. His role as an innovator and director of surrealistic films will be highlighted, and there will be an effort to recreate the atmosphere and the mood of his movies.
AUDIENCE People who admire cult films, underground alternative culture, and surrealism or experimental art can discover the original father of weird movies. Also, film buffs and fans of dark TV shows like Breaking Bad or who are interested in recent movie history will enjoy this festival. Lynch’s themes of the fine line between innocent lives and disturbing crime or dark violence have become popular in today’s entertainment. Of course, people in their 40’s and 50’s might attend because they were original fans of David Lynch. This festival will appeal to many people because his weird but unique vision has become part of contemporary TV and popular culture. Persona 01. The original fans of David Lynch: people in their 40’s and 50’s When the original fans were younger, David Lynch’s movies were much more famous than now, and an underground audience developed who appreciated his twisted vision. These fans still admire that time period and Lynch’s movies, so this festival might stimulate their nostalgia. Persona 02. People who admire cult films: the young in their 20’s to 30’s There are some people who are really interested in unusual movies like cult films, underground alternative culture, surrealism and experimental art. They might be happy to discover one of the roots of these cultural forms through this festival. Persona 03. A big fan of dark TV shows: the young in their 20’s to 30’s Contemporary dark TV shows like Breaking Bad are influenced by some of Lynch’s themes, such as the fine line between innocent lives and disturbing crime or dark violence. This is becoming popular in today’s entertainment, so members of the younger generation who are interested in these themes might want to participate in the festival. 14

MASTER MOODBOARD Due to the many changes I made in the guiding narratives, the master mood board also changed several times. So I have six mood boards including the final one. The critique of the first mood board was that the images could be anything. It’s David Lynch style but not specifically about him. For the second mood board I tried to make more David Lynch-style images so I added disturbing images and a 1950’s vibe. The guiding narrative at this time was “I’m a normal boy / I’m in my late convertible car from the 1950’s on a dark highway / Driving furiously because I just did some crazy violent thing.” However the critique was that the guiding narrative was not good, so I explored more on stories for the narrative. For the third and fourth master mood boards, I made them together because I wasn’t sure which one was better, the ‘woman in a dive bar’ concept or the ‘man in a big convertible car’ concept. The critique was that the images were appropriate for the Lynch film festival, but I needed to develop them more based on the guiding narratives. For the fifth master mood board, I was focusing on the’ woman in a bar’ concept. For the photographs, I went to three bars in SF (including Martuni’s twice) and took some photos. The critique was good for the photos, but I had a hard time creating a system. At this time I was starting to make the festival catalog and the concept was a cheap bible in a motel room, so I decided to focus more on the’ woman in a motel room’ concept. For the last mood board, I finally decided on the ‘woman in a motel room’ concept and then took some photos for it. For the level 1 and level 2 images I went to two local motels and took photos. For the woman’s photos, I only used photos by Fabio Zenoardo. For level 3, the images are from the internet.

Building Curiosity The poster is like a large invitation to all the viewers and creates the first impression of the festival. Based on the changes in the guiding narratives and master mood boards, the poster concept also changed several times. The concept of the final poster is an attractive married woman in a mid-century motel room. She is waiting for her secret lover who is also a criminal. I tried to make a compilation of David Lynch’s movie style on this poster with a disturbing concept and weird and dark images.

Invitation to the Dream The concept of festival guidebook is a cheap bible in a motel room. It is made of a black faux leather. It seems to be a normal bible, but on the inside of the book, the papers are dirty and have stains. I tried to adopt the David Lynch concept of the appearance of normality on the outside but dirty and disturbing inside.

TICKETS
Unlock the Dark The tickets of the festival are motel fobs. Based on my concept, the screening places are mid-century motels in SF: Twin peaks hotel, the Inn on broadway and Motel Capri. So the audience uses these keys to get access to the motel rooms where the films are screened.

SCHEDULE
When You Unlock the Dark The schedule goes with the motel keys. The festival lasts for three days and each day has two movie screenings and one or two events. Moreover, the screening places are different each day. As people have to unlock the door, it’s better to have the tickets and the schedules together during the festival, so I combined then in the box.

ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHIC/ SIGNAGE SYSTEM
Did You See the Signs Outside? Since the background of the festival is old classic motels in SF, the environment is the exterior and interior of the places. If it was a real festival, I would have to arrange the schedules of the festival with the motels, consider the quality of the movie screening, and make other adjustments. However, since this is just a hypothetical one, I was happy to make the environmental elements.

AT THE END OF THE JOURNEY. I couldn’t imagine how I would finish all the work, and sometimes I honestly wanted to give up. From the research to the logo exploration, it wasn’t too difficult, but after the logo selections I had to pick an appropriate and clear concept for the festival, and the real difficulty started from this point. It originally seemed easy to pick a concept and execute it, but for me it was very difficult to pick one by myself. I think I was too affected by others’ opinions and relied on the professor’s critique to solve my problems instead of deciding on my own. It would have been better to go for what I wanted and make the decisions earlier. I think I am still affected by the Korean learning system, where the professor has a large role in telling us what the right way should be. But this experience showed me more about American teaching and learning style. I learned a lot, made progress and finally finished everything, but I still cannot feel satisfied 100%. However, according to what I learned from this class, I think I can be a better student and graphic designer in future semesters and in the real world.
