The Shrine of Christ’s Passion & more

Thursday, March 21, 2013 $96 B, L, D You are in for a treat today as you tour two sites in Lake County Indiana: The Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St. John, Indiana and The Historic Lake County Court House in Crown Point, IN. Our first tour will be at The Historic Lake County Courthouse, affectionately referred to as the “Grand Old Lady.” Designed by J. C. Cochran of Chicago, Illinois, this ornate building has been a landmark in Lake County since its erection in 1878. Now placed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973, the Lake County Courthouse, retired as the house of county government, now harbors a medley of unique shops, a museum featuring Crown Point historical memorabilia plus more. Lunch will be included at a local family restaurant. Our second tour, The Shrine of Christ’s Passion, is an interactive half-mile winding pathway that begins with the Last Supper and Garden of Gethsemane. You then journey through the Passion of Christ as depicted in the Stations of the Cross. This will be a guided tour via walking or cart. Along the walkway observe 40 life size bronze statues, each an exquisite work of art created by sculpture, Mickey Wells. As one review stated “Anyone who appreciates the artistry of sculpting, landscape and set design will be blown away. Worth it just for that.“ On our way home,

“9 to 5” at the Derby Dinner Playhouse

Last year they received their first Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. They have received 11 awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), including Vocal Group of the Year for three straight years (2008-10), and the 2011 Best Bluegrass Band and Album of the Year awards by Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America. Our first stop will be the Schenck Mansion Bed & Breakfast, where we will enjoy a tour of the 35 room mansion as well as a delightful luncheon. The Schenck Mansion was built in 1874 by riverboat captain B.F. Schenck, the son of wealthy Swiss immigrants. After lunch, we’ll tour the “Life on the Ohio” River History Museum (formerly a Presbyterian parsonage) and visit the Presbyterian Church, which is now part of the museum. While inside the historic sanctuary of the Presbyterian Church, Danny Back, a River and Steamboat Historian since 1990, will share the history of life on the Ohio River. We could not dream of leaving Switzerland County before visiting a local winery, as America’s commercial wine industry was born in Switzerland County (as

Learn the history of the farm, which is currently owned by Betty & Gerald Manning, how Morgan’s Raiders traveled across their land that has been passed down through several generations for over 100 years. Dine at the Twigs & Sprigs Tearoom, where we’ll savor the home made foods and teas seasoned with herbs grown on the farm! Step back in time as our step-on-guide, Dick Skidmore, amateur historian, takes us along part of the trail of Confederate Raider John Hunt Morgan’s 2000 men and horses. Imagine traveling along Morgan’s trail by foot or horseback as you travel to Vernon, Muscatatuck State Park and Dupont, Indiana with stops at key points of interest along the way. Thursday, May 16, 2013 $148 B, L Have you been among those eagerly waiting to visit the mid modern J. Irwin Miller House and Garden, now owned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art? This is your chance not only to tour the recently renovated, Mid-Century Modern house (commissioned in 1953 by philanthropist J. Irwin Miller), but to compare it with a very different home owned by the Miller family. It’s an ornate Italianate mansion built in 1864 that’s now a bedand breakfast known as the Inn at Irwin Gardens. Traveling with the Society of Indiana Pioneers, we will be touring both houses as well as their spectacular gardens. The respected Columbus restaurant, Smith’s Row will serve a delicious lunch. And, of course, no trip to Columbus would be complete without a tour of architectural sites (including churches of various denominations) that have made the city famous. And finally, we will top off the day with ice cream at another historic Columbus landmark, Zaharakos. Step back in time for a hands-on tour of the working Undalata Saddlebred Farm, in “The American Saddlebred Capital of the World”, Shelby County, Kentucky. At Undalata, where Civil War veteran Harry Weissinger and his sons bred the great stallion American Born, we’ll have the opportunity to actually step into the arena during a training session, talk with a trainer and observe these distinctly skilled and beautiful show horses as they’re worked. We’ll walk through the barns and may also be able to pet a new foal! Be sure to take lots of pictures – seeing this “jewel of a breed” up-close is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! After working up a hunger at Undalata, we’ll have an early afternoon lunch at Claudia Sanders Dinner House, originally started by Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, and his wife, Claudia! It was from this very building that Kentucky Fried Chicken grew into a world-wide organization! After lunch we’ll enjoy a drive through Shelby County to Sweet Home Spun, a spinning and knitting studio on a working sheep farm in Henry County Kentucky. Owners, Sam and Joann moved to the farm in 1979, where JoAnn’s love of knitting and spinning wool led them to raise sheep in the gently rolling pastures around the house. Later, they acquired the original timbers of the historic “Six Mile Meetinghouse” and reconstructed it on their farm as a tribute to the Dutch Colony that settled the region and currently houses JoAnn’s business, Sweet Home Spun! JoAnn will share the history of the building as well as information of raising their sheep for wool, spinning, and knitting. There will be handmade items available for purchase. Afterwards, we’ll start our journey back home with a stop at the Russell Stover Candies in Seymour, IN. Hartman Rock Garden, Wright Home and more in Springfield, OH

The artist, Ben Hartman, filled his yard with more than 50 structures, numerous varieties of plants and countless handmade figurines using hundreds of thousands of stones, thereby creating a very unusual garden. Over the past eighty-plus years, the Hartman Rock Garden has welcomed tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world. Next, we will enjoy a delicious lunch at the Golden Jersey Inn, part of Young’s Dairy Farm, specializing in good country home cooked meals and homemade ice cream. Be sure to check out the Dairy Store next to the restaurant where you may find some cheese or other goodies to take home. After lunch we’ll tour the only Wright Prairie Style home in Ohio completed in 1908, the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House. The Westcott House underwent an inch-by-inch $5.3 million restoration in 2005. Each of its features—from art glass to original hardware and hand-decorated walls to massive urns—has been returned to its 1908 appearance. Before departing Springfield, we’ll make one last stop at the Heart of Ohio Antique Center,

Circus, Antique Cars and Apple Dumplings

Saturday, July 13, 2013 $99 B, L, S We’ll start the day off by experiencing America’s love affair with the automobile by visiting the Kokomo Automotive Museum where the exhibits trace the history of the automobile and the rich history of the City of Firsts. We’ll see not only cars of historical significance but also works of art. Then it’s on to the Apple Dumplin’ Inn at McClure’s Orchard in Peru, Indiana, where we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch including a homemade apple dumpling! Afterwards feel free to visit the Apple Barn, the Christmas room, try a taste of wine or hard cider (fee for tasting on own) or visit the Animal Barn. To top our day, we’ll travel to the Circus Capital of the World where we’ll attend a circus put on each year by about 200 young people, ages 7 to 21, from the area supported by several adult volunteers through the Circus City Festival, Inc. Experience the beautifully costumed young performers who are so skilled that circus fans find it hard to believe they are amateurs. Several of the performers, after completing their education, have gone on to perform with Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey, Shrine Circuses and other professional shows! The showroom is filled with fully restored Cords, Auburns and Duesenbergs which are art deco masterpieces. The second floor houses executive offices and design studios that were restored to how it looked before the Great Depression forced it out of business. Lunch will be served at the Mad Anthony Tap Room across from the

“Father of the Bride” at the Beef and Boards

Our first stop is at The Sanctuary, an art gallery owned by the acclaimed artist, Nancy Noel. Learn the history of this renovated church (now an art gallery) and how Nancy became an acclaimed artist and the impact of her work. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a delicious buffet luncheon at the Beef and Boards followed by the comedy, “Father of the Bride”. The comedy shares how a small wedding becomes a big event and a father can become a hilarious wreck! Between flowers, food and guests a person’s patience (and bank account) is stretched to the limit. The frenzied wedding tale, “The Father of the Bride” - made popular by the Classic 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and more recently Steve Martin, is a feast of fun for everyone! After the show, we’ll stop at the unique and fascinating Coxhall Gardens in Carmel, IN, which is known for its twin 90-feet bell towers, a small recreation lake and a Children’s Garden. Enjoy a delicious buffet meal right on the campus of Ancilla Domini . We then travel to Culver, IN, where we’ll tour the Culver Academy on Lake Maxinkuckee. Culver Academy‘s mission is to educate its students for leadership and responsible citizenship in society by developing and nurturing the whole individual – mind, spirit, and body through an integrated curriculum that emphasizes the cultivation of character. I am writing this message on the day the world was to have ended according to the Mayan calendar written centuries ago. If you are reading this, then the world is lasting a little longer--thank goodness. I still have New Year’s resolutions to keep! And locations I want to explore! You know, we are not to spend time predicting the end of the world, but instead we need to make the most of the time given us. Time is a gift to be enjoyed to the fullest. Straight from the Heart! As I sit down to write this article, I realize it is only 4 days before Christmas, 2012!! “Scruffy” is snuggled up beside me as we soak up the warmth of the fireplace and enjoy the twinkling lights on the Christmas tree. Gary just finished painting the downstairs bathroom a few days ago and I just finished putting the final touches on new travel tours for 2013 that you’ll find in the following pages. There are lots of new fun day trips for 2013 that you are sure to enjoy! Check out the day at the Circus in Peru, IN or the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, IN. Day 5: Cajun Heritage This morning visit a working rice farm where two crops are farmed - rice and crawfish and the farmer explains how he uses the same land for both “crops”. Visit with a second generation Cajun accordion maker who will demonstrate the skills of making the accordion that all Cajun Musicians use. This afternoon visit Vermilionville, a beautiful Cajun heritage and folk life museum that portrays the rich culture of the Cajuns. Set on the banks of the Bayou Vermilion, the historic village contains original homes filled with artifacts reflecting life in Acadiana between 1765 and 1890. Costumed historical interpreters authentically demonstrate traditional crafts and musical styles with a distinctly French accent. Visit the Alexander Mouton Home, a charming turn of the century home restored to its 1850s grandeur where you will be treated to a private reception. In addition to the antiques,and lovely paintings, there’s a colorful collection of elegant Mardi Gras costumes worn by past kings and queens of Lafayette’s Mardi Gras. Day 1: Stockbridge, MA Board your flight for New England. Upon arrival, travel to Stockbridge, MA to view the most famous Main Street in America as painted by Norman Rockwell. The well-known and awarded Red Lion Inn is our home for 2-nights. After dinner, retire to your room or feel free to enjoy the nightly live entertainment. D Day 2: Nostalgia After breakfast in the Inn, visit the Norman Rockwell Museum to discover the Saturday Evening Post paintings that made him a famous master in illustration. The Museum is dedicated to his works and features galleries, a gift shop, and Rockwell’s original studio. After some free time on Main street in Stockbridge, visit the Berkshire Museum featuring the Festival of Trees: a unique display of more than 100 twinkling trees each decorated with the heart and soul of the local community! Day 4: Happy Thanksgiving Today is Thanksgiving and we’re in for a special treat as we head into Manhattan early for the 87th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. You’ve seen it on TV, now you’ll be there to watch it in person! This afternoon we’ll board the Bateaux NY, a European style all-glass dining vessel with unobstructed views of the city, for a two-hour cruise with a Thanksgiving festive menu. B, L

Day 5: Traditions of the 17th Century Travel north to Plymouth, MA and the Plimoth Plantation. Step back to 1627, just 7 years after the arrival of the Mayflower, and tour the recreated 17th Plimouth Plantation century English Village complete with re-enactors and furnished reproductions of the Colony. Discover how the 17th century Wampanoag lived by exploring their living history exhibit. European Christmas Markets Day 1: Overnight flight International flight. D (onboard plane) Day 2: Rothenburg, Germany Arrive in Frankfurt and board our luxury coach for the short drive to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This medieval city is one of only a few that exist in Germany that still have their entire medieval defensive wall intact. Rothenburg also has a Christmas market, and after touring the city on a short walk with a local guide to learn its history, we will have time to enjoy a smaller and quaint market. You will want to stop to visit Käthe Wohlfahrt’s Christkindlmarkt, an enormous Christmas shop which is open year-round. B (onboard plane) Day 3: Nurnburg, Germany In the past century, Nürnberg has dark ties to the Nazi party, and was the scene of the war trials held by allied forces. In more modern times it has a much brighter reputation as the site of the best Christmas markets in Germany. Dozens and dozens of stands which are decorated for the season are set in the city center square, with craftsmen that have handmade a large variety of goods to sell. Some stands are cooking sausages and others are warming Glühwein, a mix of red wine and spices. We return Rothenburg for overnight. B, D Day 4: Strasbourg, France After breakfast we depart for Strasbourg, France where we tour the Cathedral of Strasbourg, St. Thomas’s Church, and the University, the Astronomical clock and the historic “La Petite Strasbourg” quarter. Our highlight will be exploring Strasbourg’s famous Christmas market around its impressive cathedral since 1570! While we are walking through the city, we see the work of the talented craftsmen, and the Bredle Market where we may taste little delicious cakes traditionally prepared during the advent period. B, D Day 5: Triberg, Germany Today we head for the beauty of the Black Forest at Christmas time. We stop in Freiburg to explore the Christmas Market before we visit the Gutach Farm Museum and a Cuckoo Clock Shop. We overnight in Triberg. B, D Day 6: Oberammergau We travel southeast for a tour of Neuschwanstein, the grand palace created by Ludwig II of Bavaria in the foothills of the Alps, and is said to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s castle. After touring the palace we will travel half the distance back to our hotel to stop in the village of Ettal. Here we will have time to find lunch on our own, and stroll through the beautiful baroque monastery. After lunch we will visit a local cheese maker, for a tour and a cheese tasting. We then return to have some free time to explore Oberammergau. B, D Day 8: Salzburg, Austria Upon arrival in Salzburg, the city of Mozart, and The Sound of Music, a local guide will take us on a short walking tour including the Mirabel Gardens (the setting where “Do Re Mi” was sung in The Sound of Music), and down the streets of the famous Getreidegasse (the traditional cobblestoned shopping street in the old part of the city). On our tour we will go into the home where Mozart was born, and walk through the city’s grand cathedral. This evening we will have dinner at the St Peter Stiftskeller, the oldest restaurant in Europe, having been documented as early as the year 803. B, D

Day 9: Salzburg After breakfast this morning, we will tour a salt mine. We will don miners garb, and slide our way underground for a truly fun and educational experience. In the afternoon we will return to Salzburg for some free time to explore Salzburg’s Christmas market. Tonight we have dinner on our own. B Day 10: Munich, Germany Travel to Munich, where we will meet a local guide and learn about the history and highlights of the city. Then have one last opportunity to explore a Christmas market, or opt to visit one of the many world-class museums on your own. Tonight we dine at Weihenstephan Brewery, a brewery started one thousand years ago by monks. B, D Day 11: Return flight home This morning we say ‘Auf Wiederseh’n’ to Germany as we catch our return flight home. B

Policies Cancellations Our refund policy for cancellations varies according to the type of tour. Your deposit for an overnight tour is fully refundable up to the final payment due date. On any cancellation made after final payment is due, we reserve the right to withhold monies for non-refundable expenses. All overnight motorcoach: Full refund up to the day of departure for medical reasons except for non-refundable expenses to us. Many hotels, restaurants & activities require pre-payment. Fly/Coach: The motorcoach portion of the tour is fully refundable (except for non-refundable expenses incurred by us) up to the day before departure for medical reasons. The refund of the flight portion of the cost is dictated by the airline. If we can get a refund on the flight or find someone to use the ticket, we will certainly pass that refund on to you. However, if we cannot obtain a refund, we will be unable to refund that portion of the tour price. Cruise: Refund for cancellation of cruises depends on the cruise line and if you have purchased their optional trip cancellation insurance. Please call for questions on a specific cruise. Final Payment Your final payment is due 30 days before departure for an all-motorcoach tour and 60 days before departure for tours involving air unless otherwise noted. For one day tours, full payment is due in full upon making reservation. Included in the Tour Price (and tipping policy) The price of the tour includes all attractions, lodging, motorcoach transportation, breakfast and dinner daily (unless noted otherwise), and tips for hotel, airport, and restaurant personnel. If the tour involves air travel, the cost of the ticket is included unless otherwise noted. Tips for the driver, tour managers, and step-on guides are left to the discretion of the traveler and should be in accordance with services received. Typical gratuities for tour manager and driver are

$3-$5 per person, per day each. Trip Insurance For 2 main reasons we highly recommend the purchase of trip insurance and can provide information on Berkley Insurance: 1) Trip interruption – There are circumstances that can prevent passengers from fully participating in a tour and may require an early departure or extended stay. For example, if a passenger suffers an injury that prevents the traveler from continuing on the tour, insurance will cover the cost of the extended stay, the cost of transportation home and the value of the missed tour (subject to claim submission and acceptance by Berkley Insurance). If you do not have insurance, you will personally incur these costs and it can be very expensive. 2) Trip cancellation - If you are forced to cancel a tour for medical reasons (for you or an immediate family member), having insurance ensures a complete refund of monies paid (except for the cost of insurance). Sunrise cannot guarantee this because there are times when monies are paid on your behalf prior to departure. Pick-up points For each trip, we determine the pick-up points based on demand. Photo ID’s are required on domestic fly tours and recommended on all tours. Singles Requesting Roommates If you would like to go on tour with us, but do not have a roommate for a specific trip, let us know and we will match you with someone else (same sex of course). Just let us know at least 60 days before departure and we will room you with another traveler at the double rate. If there is no roommate available on the tour you request, you will still only have to pay the price of a double. If you decline the roommate assigned, you will be

responsible for the single supplement. Of course, if you prefer to travel individually, you can still sign up for the single fare. This offer is not valid on cruises, and some select tours. Method of Payments For deposits we accept checks or cash. For final payment on overnight tours we accept Visa, Mastercard, check or cash. Seating on the Motorcoach Seating is assigned and will be rotated on a daily basis. Special seating requests are honored on the basis of availability. Responsibility Sunrise Tours is not responsible for any injury, delay, loss or accident due to any act or negligence on the part of any person or company rendering services on any of our tours. We reserve the right to change any itinerary. After You Book An Overnight Tour...
