Azzedine AlAĂŻA
The Couturier u Famously shy and infamously independent, Azzedine Alaia was not just any old fashion design. A sculptor turned couturier and shoe designer Azzedine AlaĂŻa stood out as a master of tailoring personally constructing and cutting his own patterns, marrying traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology and amassing a client list including Grace Jones, Tina Turner, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. 14 LUXURY LIVING

Known for his signature body-con silhouettes his talent for producing discreet luxury has seen his empire become one of the most prestigious and respected of his generation. Following his surprise passing in 2017, tributes poured in from the world of fashion and it was decided that an exhibition at The Design Museum in London conceived and co-curated by Alaïa himself prior to his death would become a retrospective of his extraordinary career that spanned 35 years of haute couture.
The exhibition stretches throughout Alaïa’s illustrious career from the early 1980s to his last creations and explores Alaïa’s unparalleled creative talent and the timeless beauty of his designs. Featuring over 60 examples of Alaïa’s work and handpicked by the designer himself it seems fitting that even in death Alaïa is still in control of his fashion empire and legacy. Throughout his career Alaïa shunned the traditional, refusing to be dictated to by fashion schedules creating collections at his own pace, often showcasing his collections at highly intimate affairs that were held in his Rue de Moussy headquarters in Paris’ Marais district. His ability to do so stemmed from his prodigious talent and fashion’s seemingly insatiable appetite for his designs. Born in Tunisia, Alaïa lied his way into the local École des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) before moving to Paris in 1957 where he apprenticed at Guy Laroche, worked at Christian Dior then for Thierry Mugler before founding his own house in 1980. Nicknamed the “King of Cling” because his clothes would fit like a second skin, he loved the female form and celebrated the curves of a woman. His clothes made women look and feel powerful and whilst Gianni Versace is often credited with the invention of the 80’s supermodel Alaïa was in-fact there first. Veronica Webb, Stephanie Seymour, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Yasmin Le Bon, Christy Turlington , Eva Herzigova and Noami Campbell were all regulars at his shows, Campbell would loving call Alaïa ‘Papa’ after he took her under his wing at the tender age of 16. Alaïa loved to showcase women as Amazonian powerhouses and modern heroines not to be underestimated or reckoned which he achieved with aplomb. 16 LUXURY LIVING

INSIDE THE RETROSPECTIVE The Exhibition aptly titled ‘The Couturier’ is the first major exhibition in the UK dedicated to Alaïa. Each section has its own theme based on the technique each of the designs has in common; bandage dresses are grouped together, as are his structured-yet-voluminous pieces from the 80s, while his Spanish collection from 2011 also has a space that’s entirely its own. Some of the key items on display showcase the designer’s innovative approach to fashion design, as well as items worn by some of his most famous muses. From a black zipped dress worn by Naomi Campbell and the hooded bandage dress donned by Grace Jones in A View To Kill, to the gold beaded dress worn by Tina Turner in 1989, some of his most memorable designs take center stage.
Alaïa with some of his famous muses. From left to right: Naomi Campbell Grace Jones and Tina Turner
Previously unseen photographs and personal quotes from the designer provide part of the exhibition’s backdrop, while specially commissioned works from artists Alaïa was friends with separate each group of designs. Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic, Marc Newson, Kris Ruhs and Tatiana Trouvé have each added to the architecture of the exhibition with installations designed to complement each section of garments, without distracting from Alaïa’s designs. The backdrop of the exhibition is a wall of blown up photographs by Richard Wentworth, who was given rare access between January 2016 and July 2017 to Alaia’s atelier on Rue de la Verrerie in Paris, where the designer worked for over 30 years. Wentworth’s photographs capture the details and textures of couture production, offering an insider’s peek to a life of daily craftsmanship and lasting chic.

debuts
SPECTACULAR FAIRY-TALE COLLECTION Van Cleef & Arpels has launched a new collection inspired by four fairytales, originally written by the famed Brothers Grimm, who popularized traditional folk tales in the 19th century including Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
The maison’s new high jewellery collection ‘Quatre Contes de Grimm’ brings together an astonishing assortment of 80 jewels and reinterprets; The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Golden Bird, The Three Feathers, and Town Musicians of Bremen. The carefully selected gemstones and Van Cleef & Arpels intriguing blend of colour combinations help to add sparkle to the main characters. The first reinterpretation which originated from two volumes published in 1812 and 1815, is the tale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses. It sees jewels imbibing the enchanted ball attended each night by the sisters. The Van Cleef & Arpels artisans created a different clip for each princess: Each ballgown, rendered in gold, diamonds and gemstones, is unique, while the position of each princess also may differ slightly. The one common element to each is the princess’s face, crafted as a rose-cut diamond. Here, a trio of princess clips: Princesse Éos, in pink and mauve sapphires and diamonds; Princesse Danica, in yellow sapphires and diamonds; and Princesse Héméra, in blue and mauve sapphires, emeralds, tsavorite garnets, and diamond 20 LUXURY LIVING
The Rubans de princesse necklace symbolises the coquetry of the sisters through silk-like ribbons of round and baguette-cut diamonds, suspending three remarkable pear-shaped stones weighing a total of 22.87 carats that can be detached and worn as a pendant and pair of earrings. The Golden Bird, which sees the Oiseau d’or clip in yellow sapphires, spessartine garnets, onyx and diamonds joining the Maison’s portfolio of humming birds, lovebirds and birds of paradise that have featured in Van Cleef ’s jewels since their foundation is the second reinterpretation. As the title of the fairy-tale suggests feather feature are the focus of the third reinterpretation of The Three Feathers, which sees the remarkable Panache Mystérieux clip utilising the Maison’s Vitrail Mystery Set technique in an exquisite palette of coloured sapphires with diamonds. The final reinterpretation sees the story of the Town Muscians of Breme. The Quartet necklace, features an 11.39-carat cushion-cut pink sapphire surrounded by fire opals, pink sapphires, spessartite garnets, pink spinels, cultured pearls, gold mother-of-pearl, and diamonds. The pendant is removable The ‘Quatre Contes de Grimm’ collection, a deluxe combination of materials and innovative techniques in the earrings, bracelets, necklaces, brooches and rings is literally and figuratively a fairy tale come true.

Merging nature with richly dramatic embellishment, luxury lingerie brand Coco de Mer has teamed up with London’s leading museum of art & design the Victoria & Albert museum to create a stunning 32-piece collection which celebrates the opulence of ornament from Georgian glass to traditional Korean lacquerware in silk satins and tulles. Delving into the V&A’s rich archives Coco de Mer has adapted delicate motifs and ornate patterns into items such as an English glass and gilt scent bottle from about the 1760s into a delicate golden embroidery and taken William Morris’ Wreathnet furnishing fabric from 1882 to create a silk nightwear print. The collection will include bras, panties, bodysuits, nightwear and accessories with process ranging from £65 - £595 The new collection launched in September incorporatesfour different ranges for AW18, 2018:
GoLDEn HEron An 18th century glass and gilt scent bottle from the V&A’s collections is the inspiration for this intricate design. Echoing the colour scheme of the original, gold embroidery is featured on a deep blue silk satin base.
BotAniCAL BEAuty This design features an embroidery detail from a silk cushion cover from the V&A’s textile collections. The stylised heart-shape of wild flowers is an example of the English taste for floral decoration popular in the 17th century that has been adapted for the contemporary woman.
MiDniGHt VinE This delicate leaf motif has been inspired by mother of pearl inlay found in the V&A’s collection of traditional Korean lacquerware. A popular motif in Korean art, scrolling vines were considered symbols of abundance.
SiGnAturE This rich ruby coloured collection is a luxurious interpretation of the floriated pattern of Wreathnet, a textile originally designed by William Morris in 1882. A pioneer of the Arts and Crafts Movement, his designs sought to bring the art of nature into everyday life. The brand has also announced plans to work together on its own-brand SS19 collection.

MASTERS OF ABSOLUTE MINIATURISATION u
Renowned Swiss watchmakers Jaeger-LeCoultre have recently unveiled two new models from its 101 collection the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Joaillerie 101 Reine and Joaillerie 101 Feuille watches. Stylish and beguiling these two elegant watches offer women of the world a starring role: heroines by day and by night.
30 LUXURY LIVING
Almost identical in design the pink gold Jaeger-LeCoultre Joaillerie 101 Reine and Joaillerie 101 Feuille watches have the same case, same dial and same bracelet, each are adorned with pavĂŠ diamonds 101 for the Reine, and 167 pavĂŠ diamonds for the Feuille. On the silvered opaline dial, two discreet Baton hands reflect eternal femininity. And could anything better enhance the union of mechanical perfection and jewellery excellence than pink gold? Sensuous, exquisitely feminine, and timeless, this precious metal is perfectly suited to its new starring role The one difference between the two watches is the lid on the Joaillerie 101 Feuille model. Echoing the delicacy of a leaf, it is decorated with 57 brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds. The lid itself takes the shape of a headdress and can be raised or closed at will, revealing or concealing the passage of time. Under the curves of its natural lines, the dial is either hidden from the eyes or revealed to the light of day. With this interesting feature, Jaeger-LeCoultre makes the new Joaillerie 101 Feuille more mysterious, more secretive.
A MINIATURE MOVEMENT AT THE HEART OF TWO JEWELLERY WATCHES Since 1929, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 has stood out in terms of the mastery of absolute miniaturisation. At the time, pocket watches were giving way to wristwatches, which were particularly prized by women who dreamed of wearing a jewel on their wrist that brought together the precision of mechanical operations and a refined aesthetic. This calibre took its inspiration from the famous Duoplan movement, characterised by its division into two horizontal planes, one on top of the other. Now almost one hundred years old, and having benefited from all those years of expertise, it remains the smallest mechanical movement in the world. Contained in a volume of 0.2 cm3 and measuring 14 mm x 4.8 mm, with a thickness of 3.4 mm, each Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 is unique. Each of its components is custom manufactured and adjusted. Weighing barely a gramme, this micromechanical masterpiece contains 98 components assembled by hand by only a handful of watchmakers, since there are only a rare few who have mastered the painstaking assembly of something so small and precise. As a reminder, its balance wheel oscillates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, a remarkable technical challenge in terms of precision. BVLGARI Re-LIVeS A GeNeRATIoN WHeN fASHIoN, ART & MuSIC CoLLIDe
As a tribute to Pop Culture and all things disco, luxury jewellery brand Bvlgari has released a new collection aptly titled “Wild Pop”. Think dramatic colour combinations, an aesthetic that challenges every high-end jewellery convention and the disruptive spirit of the 1980’s and you’ll understand the rule-breaking approach to this new and bold collection. Inspired by the eclectic spirit of the era, Bvlgari plays with rare gemstones, bold designs and fabulous craftsmanship for this highly unexpected 80-piece collection which is - of course - highly impressive. While of the pieces capture the excitement and eccentricity of the 80’s there are some stand out pieces from the collection, the first is the platinum ‘Queen of Pop’ necklace with its blinding 24.80 carat sapphire, baguette diamonds, mint green tourmalines and sapphires, epitomising the pop art style in line with the practices of high jewellery art. Audacious, unexpected and unapologetic, it unifies all the essential rules of Bvlgari design. The ‘Magnificent Green Ruffles’ was created based on the fashion advice of Alexis Carrington, the heroine of the 1980s stalwart TV series Dynasty: “When it doubt, add some ruffles to your dress,” is a real sensation, adorned with a superlative Colombian emerald weighing 34.12 carats. Reminiscent of the magnificent Manhattan skyline, the ‘Supreme Diamond Light’ set of earrings, a ring and a bracelet are inspired by Bvlgari’s enduring love for New York; taking inspiration from the city’s spectacular skyscrapers and mantra that “the city never sleeps.” The tropical vibe of Miami Vice is echoed in the Serpenti My Handcuff Watch. A special system of tiny hidden springs moves each of the 30 malachite hexagons covering the cuff. The diamond snake set atop the watch is set with diamonds in white gold and accented by rubellites. The most rebellious piece in the collection has to be the elegant ‘Happy Leaves’ necklace - a satirical nod to the recreational use of the herb is comprised of gold, and decorated with pavé diamonds totalling 14.63 carats and emeralds weighing 5.60 carats this strikingly glamourous piece is an elegant reflection of the hippy consumption that captured a complete generation. With jewellery savoir faire this collections captures the cultural revolution made of audacity and freedom.

DiamonDs are forever – or are they? u Lab-made, synthetic diamonds are becoming increasingly similar in quality, cut, and clarity to natural ones. Technological advances have resulted in their growing use and acceptance but the surprise announcement earlier this year that De Beers are set to launch a new company called Lightbox Jewellery that will begin marketing a new brand of laboratory-grown diamond jewellery we ask, have synthetic diamonds finally cracked the luxury market frontier?
46 LUXURY LIVING
47
LUXURY LIVING FASHION u
The idea of creating diamonds in a laboratory is not new. Scientists have been at it since the mid-19th century, armed with the knowledge that diamonds are the product of carbon that’s exposed to high heat and pressure. but applying this in a lab environment remained elusive until the 1950s.
u
Since then, three different techniques have been developed to produce increasingly authentic-looking synthetic diamonds. This applies to their appearance, as well as their physical properties such as thermal conductivity, electron mobility and hardness, which can even be superior to natural diamonds. Thus, over the last few year synthetic stones have begun to appear in jewellery stores as rings, necklaces and earrings Many jewellers and retailers market synthetic brands under their own white label aimed at targeting three types of consumers; the conscious consumer those who don’t want to be associated with the practise of “blood diamonds”- diamonds that have been used to finance conflict and of course, the money conscious consumer - those unable to or unwilling to pay the staggeringly high price of a mined diamond and the new throw-away consumer – those looking to be seen in the latest designer style and jewels only to replace them once a bigger or better alternative appears. to the naked eye synthetic diamonds look the same as a mined diamond and many within the diamond industry have condemned the practise citing there use is deceiving buyers so De beers apparent u-turn and entry into the synthetic market shows a significant shift in the way diamonds are today being perceived. De beers, which controls about 30 percent of the world’s supply of mined and owns the fine jewellery brands De beers and Forevermark, claims it is just responding to consumer demand. with this in mind we take a look at the top players in the synthetic diamond industry: 48 LUXURY LIVING
Lightbox JeweLLery Lightbox Jewellery, a subsidiary of De beers group will beginning trading in September 2018, offering consumers something new: sparkle and colours, at a very accessible price. Lightbox lab-grown diamonds will retail from US$200 for a quartercarat stone to US$800 for a one-carat stone. The brand promises to bring something new and innovative to the jewellery sector, featuring pink, blue and white lab-grown diamonds in a selection of accessibly-priced earring and necklace designs. Lightbox claims it will be clear with consumers about what lab-grown diamonds are and will offer straightforward pricing that is consistent with the true cost of production.

BLACK FOREVER
DARING COLOUR PALLETTE
The Origins
A Mediterranean Heritage
This is a story that began 25 years ago with a love of jewellerymaking and the desire to break away from established traditions. Rarely used in the luxury industry and extremely hard to cut, the black diamond became the favourite gem of Fawaz Gruosi, whose passion and vision have raised it to the ranks of one of the world’s most coveted stones.
de GRISOGONO loves colour, contrast and subtle nuances. Its favourite chromatic variations hark back to the roots of its creator Fawaz Gruosi. The Mediterranean serves as a perfect backdrop, providing him with an endless source of inspiration and expression. He transposes these rich and natural shades through the vivid hues of the carefully chosen stones.
Contrasted with emeralds, rubies, sapphires, pearls and white or icy diamonds, the de GRISOGONO black diamond intensifies the sparkle of the brightest coloured stones and accentuates the silhouettes of the most iconic collections. The unmistakable emblem of de GRISOGONO, this carbonado radiates a spellbindingly mysterious aura. That of a Black Forever diamond.
Selecting them for their individual beauty in terms of colour, light and intensity, he intuitively mingles fine stones with magnificent gems, free of any concerns for hierarchy. It isn’t only the combination of gemstones that delights and surprises, but also the mix of colours. Fawaz Gruosi loves to work with matching
Fawaz Gruosi takes us back to the origins of the Maison de GRISOGONO in a creation mingling pearls with black and white diamonds. Imbued with an Art Deco style, these earrings feature the kind of highly distinctive structure one has come to expect from the jeweller. Arrayed in subtly graded materials and shades of colour, mobile fringes create a striking contrast with 5.47 carats of black diamonds and 24.90 carats of white diamonds, setting a magnificent stage for two generous 19mmdiameter pearls.

tones, pushing the boundaries of traditional pavé setting to its ultimate expression. Breaking all the traditional colour codes by offering daring and unusual combinations of vibrant shades and original stones, he has made the de GRISOGONO colour palette one of its unmistakable signatures. Evoking the cerulean shades of the Mediterranean, 256 blue sapphires are adorned with a majestic lacework of 14 pear-shaped diamonds weighing around 18 carats set on 18K white gold and titanium. A tribute to nature and to delicate sea spray, totalling more than 43 carats of white diamonds and 13 carats of blue sapphires.
RED CARPET ICONS The Walk of Fame For over two decades, de GRISOGONO has unveiled an array of dazzling creations celebrating and paying tribute to its twin sources of inspiration: women and gemstones. In an endless reciprocal continuum, its muses inspire its creations and its creations in turn inspire women, generating a unique energy and an inimitable aura. Complex, dense and airy constructions that naturally become a woman’s finest ally, their stunning profiles indelibly etched on time and memory. They draw all eyes and catch the light. As daring and sensual as ever, the Jewellery Icons from de GRISOGONO know exactly how to walk the red carpet. Their secret lies in original and unusual gems, deliberately generous volumes, daring cuts and unexpected colours. In a sparkling wave of 247 carats of rubies set on blackened pink gold, six brilliant-cut diamonds ranging from 1.50 to 3.80 carats flaunt their purity.
ALLEGRA The Jewellery Icon Born in 2003, the Allegra collection symbolises life. Wholehearted, joyful, free and strong, this was the first de GRISOGONO jewellery collection. Allegra epitomises an intense sense of living, an exuberant spiral composed of daintily interwoven rings. A self-evident, natural, flowing aesthetic that is apparently simple, belies the fact its structure involves complex expertise and demanding technical mastery. Its finger firmly on the pulse, it is perpetually reinvented while remaining loyal to its overarching interlacing theme: its identity, distinctive signature and style. A subtle golden thread weaving passion into life, its festive and positive nature infuse the skin with an inimitably sunny touch. In tribute to the absolute icon, Allegra appears set with an exceptional white (D) pear-shaped flawless 5.34-carat diamond, featuring prongs paved with 40 brilliant-cut emeralds. A stunning creation loyal to its origins, displaying its legendary status in a resolutely High Jewellery interpretation.

The storied history of Champagne - one of the world’s great wine regions - has taken on a new dimension with the launch of the Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa. Guests will have exclusive access to private Champagne houses, harvesting sessions with local wine producers and tastings with Champagne producers, personally curated by the in-house concierge team.
u The Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa boasts an enviable location right in the middle of the vineyards that stripe the hills of Epernay, the capital of Champagne, and the historic villages of Champillon and Hautvillers of Dom Perignon fame. Each of the 49 rooms and suites affords spectacular views of the Champagne valley, appointed with Hermès amenities and state-of-the-art comforts. The original property has been closed since 2014 after it was acquired by Boston-based Champagne Hospitality collection, a group of boutique luxury hotels and spas that includes the award-winning Le Barthelemy Hotel & Spa in St. Barths. It is one of Dubai’s most highly anticipated projects and we know that a lot of people are going to be very excited to see her for the first time, or to step back on board the vessel that created so many wonderful memories during her 40 years at sea. We are especially thankful to our Chairman, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem whose vision and determination to give her a second life has come to fruition. His passion for the Queen Elizabeth 2 and all that she represents means that she can continue to deliver the grandeur that she stood for, within a new special location at the heart Mina Rashid, in Dubai. We have dedicated more than 2.7 million man-hours into transforming this legendary ocean liner into the multi-faceted tourist destination that she is today and I am very proud to reintroduce her to the world as she embarks on the next stage of her celebrated journey. It has been an honor to work on this wonderful project and to help ensure that our lovely Lady lives up to her new slogan: still making history.”
The 13-deck hotel has been thoughtfully restored to her former glory – maintaining her most loved interior design features - including her period furniture, renowned paintings and famous memorabilia. The original porthole windows still add a maritime feel to the attractive modernized guest rooms and a number of her original restaurants have retained the same names and décor as her former years. The lodge aims to reduce plastic usage via a bottling plant located at the property’s water hole; the plant can produce both still and sparkling water in the hotel’s grounds, allowing the reuse of glass bottles and further reducing the amount of product to be imported from outside the park. The amount of paper used at the hotel has been also significantly reduced through reliance on digital services. The food and beverage service has been designed to support local communities and farms, as well as reducing the carbon footprint of the property. Produce is sourced from the nearby Arusha and Manyara regions, supplemented by stock from the rest of Tanzania. The property also provides workshops on local cuisines and beverages, educating guests in the products of Tanzania. The Maasai tribe, who have lived in the Serengeti for generations, have also been deeply involved in the opening of Meliá Serengeti Lodge. Members of the Maasai tribe work at the lodge, making up the majority of the security team as well as several other in-hotel positions, providing the property with invaluable operational advice based on their unique understanding of the Serengeti. The hotel’s shop also helps to support the wider Maasai tribe through the sale of handcrafted bracelets and necklaces, most of them sourced directly from the Masaai Market of Arusha. The property features a pool, fitness centre, TV room and spa, as well as three uniquely luxurious categories of room. There are three restaurants: The Savannah All Day Dining and The Savannah Grill, which offer African, Mediterranean and Oriental cuisine as well as the Boma restaurant, a fine dining experience showcasing the best of Tanzanian fare. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did, so throw off the bowlines, sail away. Catch the trade winds in your sails and explore, dream and discover… Mark Twain
112 LUXURY LIVING
Ever since the 1950’s space has held a mystical hold over mankind, we know it’s out there when we look up and see the twinkling stars we know there are planets and solar systems swirling above our heads, we know how to get to it and have achieved marvellous discoveries over the past few decades, today more than ever our knowledge of space is overwhelming however space travel is still a phenomenon only a select few will ever be able to accomplish. 113
LUXURY LIVING u
Space travel offers a way to return to the “frontier” an opportunity to venture into the unknown, granted, it is currently a staggeringly expensive endeavour, but travel into outer space, including the planets of our solar system and other star systems within our galaxy, and the immensely large number of galaxies in the universe, represents a mysterious yet tempting new territory to explore. Popular culture has largely glamorized the possibilities of space travel through stories of beautiful people using advanced technology all offering peace. In short, we have romanticized about both the exploration of space and the experience of space travel through our myths, stories and portrayals. The race to space in the 1950’s was a battle of wills between two superpowers and nearly everybody marvelled at the first manned moon landing of July 1969, one of these idealists was entrepreneur Richard Branson and today he is one of the most talked about pioneers of space tourism. It all began back in 2004 when Branson signed a deal to licence technology from Paul Allen & Burt Rutan who had built the first privately owned spaceship named ‘SpaceShipOne’ (SS1), and the company Virgin Galactic was born. Its philosophy was simply to provide suborbital spaceflights to space tourists, suborbital launches for space science missions, and orbital launches of small satellites in short Branson wanted to be the first private spaceship to offer a commercial operating service.
But since then a lot has changed... Other private individuals have joined the space race most notably Elon Musk (left) who has been grabbing headlines of the past few years with his SpaceX mission. Established before Virgin Galatic way back in 2002 - SpaceX was founded to reduce the cost of space travel by using reusable rockets and push us ever closer to colonising Mars, a goal that Musk is extremely passionate about. Earlier this year in a move that became the envy of many of his contemporaries and galvanized engineers and astronomers alike, Musk sent one of his cherry red Tesla Roadster maned by a mannequin ‘Starman’ hurtling into space from the Kennedy Space Centre aboard The Falcon Heavy rocket, the most powerful working rocket in the world.
114 LUXURY LIVING
Having made reusable rockets for NASA & telecom companies, Musk has indeed got his foot firmly on the space race ladder but reliability is a key factor which seems to elude Musk. Several of his launches have gone astray and it was only two years ago when a SpaceX rocket exploded on the launchpad before take-off destroying not only its expensive communication satellite but also severely damaging the NASA base.
To date there has been no manned missions undertaken But Elon isn’t the only billionaire with his eyes on the sky, Amazon founder and the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos (left) has also joined the billionaire space race with his company Blue Origin, whose aim it is to establish inter-planetary settlements with the moon being his primary focus. Earlier this year at a the Space Development Conference in Los Angeles, Bezos set out his plan for the future, in the short term, Blue Origin’s objective is to reduce the cost of space tourism — initially with its New Shepard suborbital spaceship, and then with its orbitalclass New Glenn rocket in the 2020s, and in the long run, Bezo wants to establish a lunar industrial village and habitat for people working in space Recently it was announced that Bezos’ plans to charge passengers about $200,000 to $300,000 for its first trips into space next year via the New Shepard Spaceship. Designed to autonomously fly six passengers more than 62 miles (100 km) above Earth into suborbital space, high enough to experience a few minutes of weightlessness space tourists will be able to see the curvature of the planet before the pressurized capsule returns to earth under parachutes. To date Blue Origin has only launched eight test flights of the New Shepard from its launch pad in Texas, but none with passengers aboard only a mannequin named ‘Skywalker’, but Bezo is cautiously optimistic that Blue Origin will be taking fare-paying passengers to the edge of space as early as 2019. So in the race for space it seems just as Mars is Musk’s vision for the future, the moon the focus for Bezos but what about Richard Branson?

Well no one will forget the fatal accident that occur in the Mojave Desert back in 2004 when Virgin Galatica’s SpaceShip Two disintegrated within seconds during a test flight killing one if its-pilot and injuring the other. The company’s future all but looked over but Branson’s resilience if not blind at times continued to steer the company forward. Most recently Virgin Galactic successfully completed a supersonic, rocket-powered test flight of its redesigned SpaceShipTwo, christened Unity – A major turning point for the company. Launched from its Mojave facility, the new SpaceShipTwo aided by its WhiteKnightTwo carrier was able to reach 84,271 feet—well into the stratosphere – surpassing previous flights of just 71,000ft before descending back to Earth. Branson who is currently undertaking astronaut training claims we are months not years away from the prospect of space travel but surely these words should be taken as grain of salt after-all Branson has for years dangled the idea of space exploration in front of us taking deposits of $250,000 per ticket from hundreds of customers. In years gone by the race to space was played out by world powers out to prove its technological prowess now its billionaires & space start-up. To date only 560 people have been to space but with the commercialization of space travel edging closer it looks like the sky may not after all be the limit!!
116 LUXURY LIVING
The aim is for SpaceShipTwo (SS2) to take passengers on a wild two-and-a-half-hour flight, blasting them 360,000 feet (109,728 meters) above the Earth and giving them a four to five-minute zero-gravity experience (and, as an added bonus, passengers officially become astronauts by traveling more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) into space). After the brief suborbital flight, the spacecraft reenters the atmosphere and glides back to Earth. And so it was that during the month of September 2013, at approximately 8 a.m. local time, WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) carrier aircraft took off from the Mojave Desert carrying SS2 to an altitude of 46,000 feet. Virgin Galactic Chief Pilot Dave Mackay was at the WK2 controls, assisted by Scaled Composites (Scaled) co-pilot Mike Alsbury and The Spaceship Company Flight Test Engineer Scott Glaser. Upon release from WK2, SS2 pilots Mark Stucky and Clint Nichols, ignited the rocket motor for the planned 20-second burn propelling the spaceship to 69,000 feet. During this time, SS2 achieved a maximum speed of Mach 1.43. SS2 landed in Mojave at 9.25 a.m. local time completing the fl ight test with the pilots reporting a flawless flight. Flights are expected to begin in 2014, and it is reported that over 700 tickets have been sold with rumours of Angelina Jolie, Ashton Kutcher and Stephen Hawking among the celebrity guests who will be aboard SpaceShipTwo (SS2) for the aircraft’s fi rst set of fl ights, though the maiden voyage will be reserved for Branson family, the magnate and investor said. Virgin Galactic is advertising suborbital spaceflights for $20,000. (£125,000) For more information visit www.virgingalactic.com

DaviDoff Cigars Celebrates 50 years of making the finest Cigars This year, Davidoff Cigars celebrates 50 years of heritage, pioneering and innovative cigar making in the spirit of the man who gave the company its name – Zino Davidoff.
119
LUXURY LIVING u
In 1968, Davidoff Cigars’ journey from the origins of its famed flagship store in Geneva to a global brand with millions of followers had begun. It was Zino Davidoff ’s restless pursuit of new tobaccos and blends that has proven to be the inspiration for everything achieved in the past five decades. His quest for the finest cigar experiences took him to unfamiliar territories and unexpected origins. Zino established a facility of excellence in the Dominican Republic, where the visionary Davidoff Master Blenders blended and continue to blend treasures from the surrounding fields and from across the sea.
To mark Davidoff ’s 50th anniversary, the Swiss cigar maker will bring back its popular Diademas Finas, a cigar that was first launched in 2006, to commemorate what would have been Zino’s 100th birthday. The Limited Edition cigar will be available in four different 10-count porcelain jars. Each jar is numbered and contains a humidification device. The jars feature four distinct art designs, created by French artist Mariane Léger. Art designs, which are also represented on Davidoff ’s 50th anniversary “Caves du Monde” humidors and exclusive lighters. A Limited Edition ashtray, pipes and pipe tobacco complement the special 50 Years product offering, created for this unique occasion. 120 LUXURY LIVING
DAVIDOFF DIADEMAS FINAS LIMITED EDITION Davidoff Master Blenders have rolled everything that makes Davidoff cigars special into this elegant Diademas Finas format. “If Davidoff had a signature, it would be written with this exceptional Diademas Finas cigar,” says Edward Simon, Head of Global Marketing and Innovation at Oettinger Davidoff AG. “It’s a celebration of our Master Blenders’ craftsmanship , built with ten-year-old filler tobaccos from one of our best crops in 2005. The blend has an unparalleled sense of balance and the signature Davidoff sophistication.” The Diademas Finas is dressed with an Ecuadorean Habano wrapper, Dominican Olor Seco binder and an all-Dominican blend of filler tobaccos. The cigar delights with rich aromas of wood, earth, cream, cacao and pepper, as well as some floral notes. Presented in high-end porcelain jars, featuring the four different art designs created by Mariane Léger, the cigars will be available at select appointed merchants and Davidoff Flagship Stores from July 2018. The quantity is limited to 8000 jars worldwide.
COLLABORATION WITH MARIANE LÉGER Davidoff has turned to the skills of Mariane Léger to create four art designs that reflect the brand’s drive for discovery and its desire to deliver a wider world of extraordinary cigar experiences. The French artist blends modern technology with the traditional craft of marquetry and is a pioneer in her craft. She explored the four corners of the world to learn about the traditions and techniques being applied by the craftsmen from other cultures. Her journey was a source of inspiration - full of wonders, cultural treasures and rare finds. The result is a series of four patterns representing The Americas, The Middle East, Europe and Asia.
DAVIDOFF 50TH ANNIVERSARY ACCESSORIES & PIPE TOBACCO Davidoff has also collaborated with Mariane Léger on a collection of four 50th anniversary “Caves du Monde” humidors, leveraging her skills to inlay hand-woven fabrics into exceptional woods: skills that mirror the ones Davidoff applies to the creation of its cigars. Limited Edition Prestige cigar lighters, created specifically for the 50th anniversary, also carry the four art designs. Made in France, these exclusive and numbered pieces bear a brushed finish, with edges in a contrasting mirror effect. To complete the accessories collection, Davidoff will release a Limited Edition ashtray and a pipe (outside of the US). Made in Italy, the ashtrays are crafted out of aluminium with a brushed bronze finish. Each piece is encircled with beige structured leather, embossed with the 50 Years logo. The pipes, limited to 50 pieces worldwide, are made of briar wood from Calabria and feature an embossed 50 Years sterling silver ring. The pipes will be launched along with a special pipe tobacco Limited Edition, created to round off the 50th anniversary product offering: an exquisite blend flavoured with Kir Royal in a numbered tin featuring the 50 Years logo.

BP– $244.5 Billion The UK-based energy supermajor jumped four spots—and edged ahead of rival Exxon Mobil—on this year’s list, thanks to the company’s rising production levels and the recovery in oil prices. Revenues increased 30% and profits soared from $115 million to $3.4 billion, making it a banner year for a company that, eight years later, continues to deal with the fallout from its Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The company also enjoyed its most successful year of exploration since 2004, and continues to diversify through investment in renewables.
Volkswagen – $260 Billion Volkswagen is German for “people’s car”. The company was founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front under Adolf Hitler to make an affordable car for the masses, unlike luxury vehicles. Today, the company’s main markets are Germany and China. The Volkswagen Group is currently the world’s biggest automaker and controls top brands such as Skoda, MAN, Scania, Bugatti, Bentley, Lamborghini, SEAT, and Audi. Despite continued fallout from its “Dieselgate” emissions testing scandal, Volkswagen remains one of the world’s biggest automakers. And like many of its rivals, the company is pushing into new areas including self-driving and electric cars. It has also partnered with longtime rivals like Ford and Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors to develop commercial vehicles such as trucks and delivery vans. 127

toyota Motor – $265.1 Billion Toyota Motor is the world’s largest automotive maker and a leader in the hybrid electric car sector and king of Japan’s auto industry. It had sold more than 6 million units of its widely used Prius car by January 2017. Besides Toyota, other brands in the stable include Daihatsu, Ranz, Hino, and Lexus. Known for big–selling cars like the Camry and Prius, the company is also preparing for the future by heavily investing in emerging technologies. The auto giant recently plunked $1 billion into fastgrowing Asia-based ride-hailing company Grab while also spending $2.8 billion alongside several auto parts suppliers to found a new company that is focused on self-driving cars. Like other automakers, Toyota hopes its new products will eventually offset declining car sales in large markets like North America.
royal Dutch shell – $311.8 Billion Royal Dutch Shell, widely referred to as Shell, is among the six “supermajors” in the oil and gas industry. This company is involved in exploration, production, refining, marketing, distribution, power general, petrochemicals, and trading as well as in renewable energy fields like wind and biofuels. Shell produces around 3.7 million barrels of oil per day and runs business in more than 70 nations. It currently has the highest market cap on the London Stock Exchange and is also traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, it employs about 90,000 employees globally. In 2016, Shell spent $53 billion to acquire the BG group to become the world’s largest liquefied natural gas company. Its sheer size and deep pockets enable it to cut prices to attract more customers and take away market share from its main rivals Amazon and Target. Walmart operates e-commerce sites in 11 nations and 11,000 brick-and-mortar stores in 28 nations. Its headquarters is in Bentonville, Arkansas and the enterprise was founded in 1945. To stay on top Walmart has pruned the less productive parts of its business, such as selling its Asda business in Britain and closing 63 Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. Walmart is also making big moves in both China and India, looking to rev up international growth again.

FLYING HIGH
MAKING THE MOST Of A PRIVATE JET u With time such a precious asset, traveling by private jet with NetJets, the worldwide leader in private aviation, is the ultimate in convenience and luxury 132 LUXURY LIVING
Owning a private jet is one thing. Making the most of it is quite another. When most people make the move from flying business or first to flying private, they retain a mind-set formed by years of travel on commercial flights. But to really enjoy the benefits of private flying, you need to start looking at air travel very differently.
Leading aviation company NetJets offers individuals and businesses a shared ownership solution for private jets, providing the advantages of whole-aircraft ownership, with none of the operational and maintenance complexities. Here we highlight five ways to make the most of a plane whose only purpose is to transport you and your group to wherever you want to go.
fly TO PlAcES OTHERS cANNOT As long as an airport meets certain criteria (the most important being runway length), you can fly to it—regardless of whether it is a “normal” commercial airport or not. This is particularly useful if you want to visit remote locations such as the west coast of Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica, or private hunting ranches in Texas that are many hours’ drive from the nearest commercial airport but have airstrips. It also means you’ll have access to more accessible airports for standard destinations. For example, Teterboro Airport in New Jersey is the most convenient airfield for Manhattan; and in Switzerland, you can fly into Samedan Airport (also known as Engadin), just three miles from St Moritz, rather than Zurich, which is more than 120 miles away.
SAVE VAluAblE TIME For high-earners, this is a serious consideration in terms of the value of your hours to your business. Private jets can save you time in a number of ways. First, you can show up minutes, not hours before your flight. You do not need to check in bags, or wait to retrieve them. There are no lines to stand in or lengthy security measures to go through (in the commercial sense). The other great time-saver is having a plane that flies exactly where you want to go, when you want to go. “We have travelers who need to do several site visits to offices or have multiple meetings in one day in different cities,” says Pat Gallagher, executive vice president of sales and marketing at NetJets. “These people can fly to the nearest airport, leave the jet on the tarmac, make the visit, and get back on board an hour or so later. This lets them visit multiple cities in one day, and be home in the evening for dinner.” 133

TAIlOR yOuR IN-flIGHT ExPERIENcE One of the biggest differences between commercial and private flying is the privacy. It will be just you, your group, and the crew. This means the flight experience is more akin to being in a private room at a restaurant, or in a hotel suite, than on a commercial aircraft. You can have meetings, get some sleep, screen films, eat meals prepared by Michelin-starred chefs, or, if you are with friends or family, just relax as you might do at home. There’s also a level of personalization that would be impossible on a commercial flight, from surprise cupcakes on a child’s birthday to your favorite magazines. The experience even involves preparing someone who is a nervous flier. In one case, for example, NetJets arranged a pre-flight conference call with one of its in-house meteorologists for a client who found flying difficult. “She learned to expect turbulence throughout the mid-point of the flight and leading up to landing due to some weather systems,” says Jamie Jones, lead meteorologist at NetJets. The team even supplied the passenger with a goody basket containing everything from air-sickness pills to an umbrella for when she landed.
MAKE THE MOST Of EVERy MOMENT We’ve already talked about how much valuable time a private jet can save you. But private jets can also turn flying time into working time in a way that scheduled flights cannot. With a private jet, you can have a board or client meeting in the air. Privacy is not an issue, and onboard connectivity means business meetings can be just as productive at 41,000 feet. NetJets’ clients also report that flights let them “take back” time to relax or devote to friends and family. This might mean spending the flight playing with the kids or having a romantic meal with your partner. Or it could mean a busy executive using the time dividend to enable them to be at home more. Finally, because NetJets needs only four to 10 hours’ notice to get an aircraft ready, “private aviation allows a level of spontaneity that would otherwise be impossible,” Gallagher says. Travelers can take advantage of last-minute opportunities (for both business and pleasure) as never before.

Part marketplace, part lifestyle website the new Billions Luxury Portal is setting new waves, launched earlier this year it serves as an indispensable resource for the ultra-affluent. Curating only the best from the world of luxury with a particular focus on yachts, real estate & travel, the website offers an insight into the world of luxury with daily blogs and editorials alongside listings for sale and charter. Working in conjunction with its two partner publications Luxury Living Magazine & Perfect Homes Magazine, Billions Luxury portal aims to break the glass ceiling and bring luxury news to all, we recently spoke to Business Development Manager Stephen Jones. LUX LIVING: Firstly congratulations on the new website, before we get into the details can you explain what the concept of Billions Luxury Portal is. SJ: The concept is rather simple, over the past few years we have noticed how the concept of advertising has changed and shifted from magazine publications to online marketing. As publishers of several international magazines and a lover of printed publications I hated the idea of losing the style and feel of a glossy, well laid and designed publication but knew that we had to adapt and change with the times so decided to merge our style of luxury magazines into a well laid out easy to use website. As with all magazines you have editorial sections showcasing news and reviews and then adverts and advertorials for sale. We decided to replicate this on Billions Luxury Portal but on a larger scale. We have well thought out daily editorials covering all genres from haute horology – celebrity homes for sale – luxury auctions to travel reviews alongside real estate listings from Dubai, the USA, Portugal & the UK to yacht charters and aviation sales. 136 LUXURY LIVING
LUX LIVING: So basically it’s an online lifestyle magazine?
SJ: Yes it’s an ultra-luxury magazine because it offers a lot of editorial content but it’s also a ultraluxury marketplace where dealers, real estate agents, yachts builders and charter companies can promote and place their goods and services in front of high-net worth individuals all around the world and unlike magazines it’s not limited to a specific area. Plus being online it enables us to reach today’s nouveau riche who have been brought up on internet based platforms who probably wouldn’t think about purchasing a luxury hard copy publication. LUX LIVING: There are currently a lot of luxury lifestyle websites out there what makes Billions Luxury Portal stand out from the crowd?
SJ: That’s a good question and I’m glad you asked that. Although Billions Luxury Portal does present editorials and news like most other websites how its differs is that it also places seller directly in front of its target audience and enables then to negotiate directly with each other. Our design enables readers to directly email the seller and communicate there interest in purchasing a product, there’s no searching for the website or trying to find the correct office / store it’s just a simply click and you can speak directly with the seller. No hassle and no fuss! LUX LIVING: Where are your future plans for Billions Luxury Portal?
SJ: We have many exciting projects in the pipeline which we plan to roll out over the coming months but you’ll just have to stay tuned and regularly visit www.billionsluxuryportal.com to find out more.

Heralding a new series of pens from Italy’s oldest manufacturer of fine writing instruments Montegrappa presents Samurai, the first model in the Warriors collection, aimed at the most passionate of pen enthusiasts. Conceived to recognise the noblest of combatants throughout history, those who fought to change the course of human events, Warriors will feature the most significant and intriguing soldiers the world has seen. Limited to only 177 pens in sterling silver, each one unique, and a further seven in solid gold, the Samurai exists only as a push-system, piston-filled fountain pen, fitted with an 18k gold nib. It resides in a luxurious black lacquered box, with the ancient, original Chinese character for “Samurai” printed on top. Inside one will find the Samurai “doll” pen, accompanied by a bottle of ink and a Katana-sword accessory that acts as a fully-functional paper-cutting knife. The pen itself is a masterpiece of burnished sterling silver, a “truthful” model of an ancient samurai suit of armour made by cutting-edge developments of the ancient lost-wax technique, with certain design elements further embellished with rose gold-plated details. A rare combination of writing instrument and decorative figurine, the Samurai’s cap forms the head, breast and arms of the soldier. The pen barrel comprises the figure’s lower limbs and the writing component’s juncture. Adding to the unparalleled intricacy, the hands and waist armour are hinged, so they are detachable, as are the limbs, for moving respectively. Both a thing of beauty and a functional object with the sophisticated appeal of a working miniature, the Samurai pen will prove as captivating as the noble warrior that inspired it.

MARKING TWO CENTURIES SINCE THE BIRTH OF THE
CIGAR u The story of Toscano began on a normal summers day in August 1815, as was the norm a batch of tobacco was left out to dry in the warm summers sun at the Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence, Italy when a sudden downpour appeared and drenched the entire bale. To minimise the loss it was decided that the tobacco would be re-dried and sold to the locals as cheap cigars but as the tobacco began to dry, it also began to ferment, creating a “new unique flavour” becoming an immediate success and leading to the creation of a factory in 1818 and the brand we have come to know and love today. Now 200 years later, Toscano continues to be a dominant cigar brand in Italy, its unique flavours made with only Kentucky, fire cured tobacco along with its unique shape mean the cigars are known for their intense strength, aromas, and flavours of wood, roasting, peat, leather, and stable. Interesting, because of its size Toscano cigars are meant to be cut in half, before smoking giving two cigars per stick. Unsurprisingly its continued success owes much to these loyal customers, especially those in Italy. Through the years, the company has never forgotten or abandoned its heritage and, in fact, has embraced it even more. In Italy, Toscano has been woven into the Italian culture, marking its place in music, literature and more importantly cinematography. Unless a cigar connoisseur not many people would know that the cigar clamped between the teeth of Clint Eastwood during his ‘spaghetti western’ period where indeed Toscano cigars. So, to mark the 200th anniversary Toscano have published a beautiful coffee table book charting its fascinating history. The book reconstructs the story of the brand and reveals its techniques, illustrating the beloved cigar’s ties with Italy as well as its international appeal in addition the cult cigar that started the Italian legacy: Toscano Originale is being offered in a limited edition leather-wrapped box of 30 cigars.

THE MAN WHO COLLECTED STARS u
Joel RobuchoN 1945 - 2018 He was the master chef who shook up the stuffy world of French haute cuisine by wowing palates with the delights of the simple mashed potato and giving diners a peek at the kitchen. At one point he had earned more than 30 Michelin stars across nearly two dozen restaurants across three continents so it is little wonder that Joel Robuchon was named the “chef of the century” by the Gault et Millau cooking guide in 1990.

LUXURY LIVING DINING u
Mentor to Gordon Ramsay, Robuchon was both a highly disciplined perfectionist and a kitchen rebel known for his constant innovation and even playfulness in the kitchen. While he was no stranger to using luxury foods such as truffles and caviar of which were his favourites - his dishes were often described as just simple because he believed in using just a few ingredients within each dish so each ingredient should express itself individually not be overburdened by other more powerful flavours. His recipe for the humble mashed potatoes — or pommes purée — which famously uses a 1:2 butter to (Ratte) potato ratio, became not just one of the chef ’s signature creations, but one of the upper end of global dining’s most recognisable dishes.
The culinary maestro, best known in recent years for the chain of small restaurants he called L’ateliers first garnered international acclaim back in 1981 with the opening of his first space in Paris at a restaurant near the Eiffel Tower called Jamin, it was here where he trained the young Gordon Ramsay and famously threw a plate of Ravioli Langoustine at the young protégé who likened working for Robuchon “as working for the SAS.” Considered one of the finest restaurants in the world Jamin won three Michelin stars in three consecutive years the first restaurant ever to achieve such a feat. Born during the final years of WWII in the French town of Poitiers, Robuchon was all but destined to become a priest, at the age of 12-years he entered the junior seminary in Mauléon-sur-Sèvre, northwest of Poitiers, but found while helping the nuns prepare meals that it was cooking that was his calling so at fifteen he began an apprenticeship at the Relais de Poitiers, a hotel and restaurant in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou and has never looked back. Robuchon whilst traditionally trained bucked the trend of traditional ‘nouvelle cuisines,’ he believed that a restaurant should be a warm, casual place, rather than a stuffy temple to awkward food he introduced the open restaurant kitchen, a concept which he believed was “the future of cooking” it allowed for transparency and honesty and today more and more restaurants have migrated towards this style of open plan kitchens which Robuchon also believed made for better cooking and chefs because chefs are less likely to find themselves shouting filthy swear words or branding each other with hot knives in the heat of a moment. 160 LUXURY LIVING
Following further successes with Restaurant Robuchon at 50, Robuchon announced his retirement and his plans to pass along his knowledge to the next generation he began work on a series of TV shows, but whilst travelling to Japan and Spain he was persuaded to open a new concept: L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon and so the global revolution began.
161
Influenced by the tapas bars of Spain and the sushi counters of Japan his L ’Atelier’s were small, intimate restaurants where diners sat at a counter surrounding the kitchen, they didn’t take reservations and the chefs cooked dishes using ingredients sourced from the market daily. His goal, he said, was to make diners feel comfortable, let them interact with the chef and, above all, put the focus back on the food
u
162 LUXURY LIVING
Sadly in August of this year Robuchon passed away at the age of 73 and he leaves behind a legacy not only in his restaurants - there are currently 12 branches of L’Atelier, including in London, Tokyo, Las Vegas and Beijing - but also in the cooking school he created near the town where he was born and in the ethos he installed in countless chefs who had the privilege to work with and for him.

BORDEAUX IS BACK The 2015 Bordeaux vintage is considered by many to be a modern vintage full of charm and taste. Spectacularly rich the racy wines are loaded with personality built on intense fruit and voluptuous textures.
Here we showcase our top 10 selection:
C h ât e au Pétrus 2015 Pomerol This is like drinking liquid black currants and blackberries. The wine has great intensity and richness from the superbly generous Merlot. The wood aging is still there as a hint in the background although the fruit and acidity dominate. 164 LUXURY LIVING

Floral flavours
The resurgence of edible flowers Instantly instagramable edible flowers are a trend that we are seeing everywhere, no longer limited to just decorative pieces flora in food has become a 21st phenomenon. Of course the concept of using edible flowers is not new, using flowers in cookery can be traced back to Roman times, and have been used in Chinese, Greek, and Indian cultures within dishes still enjoyed today. Orange flower & rose are synonymous with Middle Eastern dishes used within waters and sweets while Jasmine and Lotus are commonly used within Chinese and Indian cuisine. Saffron a spice which originates from a flower called crocus sativus—commonly known as the “saffron crocus” is now considered one of the world most precious spices more expensive than even gold. 167
LUXURY LIVING DINING u
Extremely popular during the Victorian era edible flowers were at the height of fashion during Queen Victoria’s reign often used to communicate ones affection to another but fell out of favour after mass industrialisation however, thanks to the onslaught of social media and our desire to make our foods social more desirable the trend has return with a vengeance. Today, nearly every chef will garnish a dish with a delicate flower blossom to add a touch of elegance. The missing triplet to herbs and spices, edible flowers lend interest to all manner of recipes and can even be the star of the dish. The secret to using edible flowers is to keep the dish simple, do not use too many other flavours that will over power the delicate taste of the flower
Three of the most beautiful edible flowers to use:
VioleTs Violets are among the most beautiful, delicate flowers to use in the kitchen, with its gorgeous small purple, cream and yellow flowers and slightly sweet viola heartsease. Violets carry a very gentle pepperiness alongside a fresh green flavour. Heartsease has just the right balance of sweetness too. Violets are very versatile – they can’t be bettered as a crystallised flower on cakes, they add a dash of sweet pepper to leafy salads and add an extra dimension to any cocktail.
Marigolds Reliable and simple to grow, pot marigolds’ petals brighten the plate as much as your garden or windowsill. Not to be confused with the inedible African or French marigolds, pot marigolds (Calendula officinalis) have narrow eye-shaped petals radiating around their centre, most commonly in striking orange. With a gentle pepperiness taste, Marigolds add visual appeal and a gently peppery flourish to both leafy and fruit salads, the flowers release their golden colour and gentle flavour into warm butters and oils.
geraniuMs …or scented pelargoniums, to use the proper name, are fleshy-leaved reminders of 1970s window boxes, but the seemingly endless variations in scent make them a must-have edible flower. It’s the leaves rather than the flowers that carry the scent, and if you grow only one type, let it be rose geranium. Surprisingly Geraniums can taste like anything from rose to lime to hazelnut to nutmeg making them the perfect flower to use. Line a cake tin with the leaves to infuse the cake mix with their flavour, or make a syrup by dissolving an equal weight of sugar in water and adding a handful of leaves to it as you take it off the heat. SACRÉ BLEU
Rosé has long been considered the poor cousin of red & white wine, but as the latest trend for blue wine gathers pace, French experts are finding the phenomenon hard to swallow.
In the Mediterranean town of Sete in southern France, a new brand of wine was recently launched, and it is the colour that has got locals surprised and some infuriated. With a light turquoise hue the chardonnay ‘Vindigo’ is produced at Bodegas Perfer, in Spain’s Almeria region by French entrepreneur René Le Bail. The science behind the mystifying hue deserves explanation. The makers claim it is not an artificial dye, or the commonly-used blue pea flower extract apparently it starts out as white wine but turns blue after being passed through a pulp of red grape skin, thanks to the natural pigment anthocyanin a claim this is disputed by many French analysists. No category for ‘blue wine’ currently exists in European Union rules, but Vindigo is the latest of several such products to launch in the last couple of years. The world’s first blue wine, Gik was launched in 2015 by Spanish winemaker Gik. Breaking the mould in more ways than one, the brainchild of six friends, Gik was developed in tandem with chemical engineers from the University of the Basque country, who discovered that by fermenting different varieties of grapes with two pigments (one found in the skins of red grapes, the other from a flower, which they refuse to divulge), the liquor turns blue. Blumond, a blue bubbly, followed just under a year later; and if you just search Google for “blue wine,” you’ll pull up a whole bunch of different options, including Blanc de Bleu Cuvee Mousseux and Marques de Alcantara Blue Chardonnay.
So what does blue wine taste like? Based on a Chardonnay, Vindigo has a fruity flavour, creator French entrepreneur René Le claims it also has with elements of cherry, passion fruit and blackberry and pairs well with seafood and oysters. While many wine connoisseurs dismiss blue wine as simply a gimmick, todays millenniums have certainly jumped on the bandwagon of this Instagram’able product. 170 LUXURY LIVING

INTRODUCING THE NEW DBS SUPERLEGGERA u
TWO ILLUSTRIOUS NAMES; ONE MAGNIFICENT SUPER GT
180 LUXURY LIVING
A true thoroughbred that marks the return of not one, but two illustrious names, with DBS, Aston Martin is reviving an iconic nameplate that first appeared on in 1967, while Touring’s famous mark – Superleggera – will once again adorn the bonnet of an Aston Martin. A collaboration that originally paved the way to the DB4, 5 and 6 Mark 1, DBS Superleggera pays homage to the historic super lightweight construction technology of the famous Italian coachbuilder.
181
u In the new DBS Superleggera, Aston Martin has a Super GT that’s a breed apart. One that takes the fight to the world’s best on its own terms. Clad using immaculately sculpted carbon fibre body panels this latest model is blessed with muscular, highly individual styling. A look that’s perfectly matched by epic performance courtesy of Aston Martin’s 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12, tuned to produce tremendous power and immense torque for breath-taking response and extraordinary in-gear performance.
182 LUXURY LIVING
As the British marque’s magnificent new Super GT flagship, DBS Superleggera replaces the esteemed Vanquish S. That’s a tough act to follow, but one it was born to do. With 725PS, 900Nm of torque, a top speed of 211mph and blistering acceleration that dispatches 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds and 0-100mph in 6.4 seconds, DBS Superleggera is a car dedicated to delivering an unforgettable driving experience and class-leading in-gear acceleration, with 50-100mph achieved in fourth gear in a mere 4.2 seconds. While being resolutely modern in design and engineering, DBS Superleggera proudly evokes the towering reputations of Aston Martin’s hardest hitting and best-loved flagships from the past. Combining generous proportions with aggression and athleticism, DBS Superleggera expresses itself with an explicit design language. One that combines compelling curves with advanced aerodynamics for a sleek shape that both cheats the wind and clamps the car to the road. Evolving innovative aerodynamic concepts first seen on the DB11 – such as the curlicue and Aeroblade – and then taking things further with an F1-inspired double-diffuser, DBS Superleggera generates 180kg of downforce at VMAX: the highest figure ever for a series production Aston Martin. This significant increase comes with no additional drag penalty. The heart of DBS Superleggera is Aston Martin’s 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine. Set low and and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimise the centre-of-gravity and weight distribution, this high-performance engine develops 725PS at 6500rpm and 900Nm from 1800-5000rpm. Detailed tuning of the V12 together with a new exhaust strategy with active valves and quad tail pipes ensures DBS Superleggera has a commanding and powerful sound character, particularly in the more aggressive dynamic modes, while retaining a level of refinement and civility that compliments its role as the consummate Super GT. DBS Superleggera deploys its prodigious power and torque to the rear wheels via a new rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Featuring a mechanical limited-slip differential and torque vectoring for precise, predictable and exploitable handling and a lower final drive for explosive ingear acceleration, DBS Superleggera combines the responses of a supercar with the refinement of a GT, with the capability of a maximum speed of 211mph.
183
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
The chassis is an evolution of the latest generation lightweight bonded aluminium structure first seen on the DB11, with forged double wishbones at the front and a sophisticated multi-link system at the rear. Latest generation adaptive damping is fitted as standard, with sensors detecting the prevailing driving conditions, as well as the demands the driver is making of the car. Both the powertrain and chassis have a choice of three dynamic modes – GT, Sport and Sport Plus – which can be selected by the driver to intensify or relax DBS Superleggera’s responses according to the needs of the driver. DBS Superleggera features a generous level of standard equipment, including keyless entry, tyre pressure monitoring system and a 360-degree camera with Parking Distance Display and Park Assist. The audio system has DAB plus Bluetooth audio and phone streaming, iPod, iPhone and USB playback. There is also an integrated satellite navigation system and wi-fi hub. All the in-car infotainment systems use a central LCD screen, controlled via a central dial. As befits its flagship status, DBS Superleggera features a high level of craftsmanship with extensive scope for personalisation via a generous choice of options. Supple, aromatic leather and Alcantara upholstery comes as standard, as do the Sports Plus performance seats and steering wheel. There is a choice of two alloy wheel designs: the standard ‘Y’ Spoke Forged Wheel and the Lightweight Twin Spoke Forged wheel. Both are 21” in diameter and fitted with Pirelli tyres developed specifically for DBS Superleggera. There is also a choice of striking Designer Specifications, with specially chosen colour and trim combinations selected by the Aston Martin Design Team to accentuate certain aspects of DBS Superleggera’s character. Priced from £225,000 in the UK, EUR 274,995 in Germany and $304,995 in the USA, deliveries of DBS Superleggera are scheduled to begin in Q3 2018.

187
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
Rewriting the rulebook on yacht design is the Riva Rivamare, launched in 2016 it is indeed a prime example of this heritage, tradition and timeless elegance. A speedboat of the future and a worthy successor of masterworks like Aquariva Super and, before that, Aquarama: it combines the style and charm of these legendary models with the most cutting edge technologies, and offers the greatest care for every detail, together with a level of comfort and spaces never seen before in boats of this size.
Born from the collaboration between Officina Italiana Design, the firm headed by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, Rivamare is 11.88 metres (39 ft) long, with a full beam of 3.5 metres (11.6 ft). With its sinuous and sleek lines, it looks seductive and sporty. Its side view reveals the striking angles of the keel and bow, ready to fly across the water. Fitted at the sides of the anchor and stainless steel prow is a pair of night-time mooring lights: this is just one of the many details borrowed from previous models and a tribute to the Riva tradition. The boat’s profile has a distinctive double-curved laminated crystal window at the level of the cabin. The most eye-catching feature on the deck is the windscreen, consisting of 5 double-curved laminated crystal glass sections set in a stainless steel frame, fitted with a rail for the cockpit cover. The deck, in gloss varnished mahogany panelling, is enhanced by a central glass pane - set in a stainless steel frame - that boosts the natural light in the interiors. A striking feature at the centre of the deck is the casing in chrome plated aluminium alloy supporting the signal horn, yet another stylistic element inherited from the Sarnico boatyard tradition. This magnificent object, with its timeless look, completed by a mahogany shaft for hanging the Riva banner, is reminiscent of the fittings found on the speedboats of the past and is the distinctive hallmark of this model. At the stern, both bulwarks feature striking grilles in polished stainless steel: a choice of style that displays a family feeling with the most recent coupÊs, like 76’ Perseo. The stern features a major innovation, offering the luxury of a beach area. The hatch, with inbuilt mahogany steps, in fact swings open to reveal a large surface. Using the inclination of the stern and the level surface of the beach area, two specially designed ergonomic sun pads can be positioned over the hatch, offering the opportunity to experience the sea in a unique style. With the hatch still open, more steps appear, complete with two storage compartments at the sides. 188 LUXURY LIVING

Rivamare is a leap into the future, forged in the Riva tradition: a motorboat born to be memorable Furnished with a large C-shaped sofa set around the folding table in mahogany and stainless steel luxury is indeed at the forefront of design. This space, featuring numerous technical compartments as well as storage compartments for guests, can be protected by a retractable electro-hydraulic bimini top. The pilothouse design draws inspiration from the driver’s cabin in sports cars: the entire control panel is in carbon fibre with the frame lined in technical fabric. In addition to two handle bars in polished stainless steel and mahogany, it is embellished by other rich details, including the name of the model and serial number, both in chrome plated steel. The helm station is worthy of a yacht: as well as the pilot and co-pilot seats, there is a third seat on the starboard side. Custom-designed for Rivamare by Officina Italiana Design, these seats feature a boat-coloured frame, upholstery in technical fabric and other refined details also found in the most recent Riva models. Seductive & sporty, combining the raw power of a motorboat with all the rich luxury of a yacht, the Rivamare is equipped with a pair of D6 400 DPH Volvo Penta engines (stern driven propulsion), each generating 400 Mhp at 3,500 rpm, with integrated trim control provided by a stern drive and interceptor management system. In terms of performance, the boat can reach a cruising speed of 31 knots and a maximum speed of 40 knots (preliminary data). Performance also means comfort: upon request, it is possible to install an air-conditioning system in the lower deck and helm station and, for the first time on a boat this size, a Seakeeper NG5 stabiliser to minimize rolling motion when at anchor

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the production of the first Land Rover. Knitted firmly into the fabric of Britain and many more nations across the globe, a Land Rover is at ease on the streets of Mayfair or Paris as partnering with the British Red Cross to deliver aid in areas deemed inaccessible.
Transcending its original remit, being the agricultural workhorse, to be seen as much more, from the rusty old Series I prototype uncovered in a garden, to the latest state-of-the-art Range Rover Velar, generations of Land Rovers have ruled for 70 years, adapting, developing and changing to suit the needs of those who drive them. The refinement of the Range Rover, versatility of the Discovery and the durability of the Defender are all testament to Land Rover’s extraordinary engineering and design achievements in those 70 years. It all started on Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey in 1947. Maurice Wilks traced an outline in the sand of what was to become the most iconic vehicle in Britain. From the beach, jungle, bush, desert and the mountains to the mud, sand and snow; as the first true all-terrain vehicle, Land Rover has always stood for capability and adventure. Go anywhere, whenever, whatever the weather, however steep the incline. It’s done some pretty amazing things over the years: towing trains, scaling dam walls, tackling giant speed bumps and racing 999 steps up a mountain side in an SUV that’s faster than a sports car. All this showcases just how far Land Rovers can, and will go. The ability to go ‘above and beyond’ has always been at the heart of Land Rover. As the go-to vehicle for humanitarian, conservation, research and protection projects, Land Rover dominated 70% of the global aid market in the 1970s. Across the world, it has been a symbol of hope and rescue, reaching places no car had before. Indeed, as the old saying goes, for many, the Land Rover was the first car they ever set eyes on. This is also a chance to celebrate the hours spent designing, engineering, assembling and delivering the Land Rover; the craftsmanship and passion that goes into creating a car so well loved across the globe. Lode Lane, Solihull is the place where over seven decades, 7.2 million Land Rovers have rolled off the line and Halewood is the place from which nearly 1.4 million Freelanders, Evoques and Discovery Sports have set off on their journeys across the world. With electrification and autonomy looming closer on the horizon, there are years of innovation and excitement ahead for the brand. But for now, we must look to our past legacy and commemorate some of the things that Land Rover, the cars and the people behind them, have achieved. 194 LUXURY LIVING

DEFENDER LIVES ON
To mark this iconic milestone Land Rover have unveiled a limited-edition high-performance version of the iconic Defender, The Defender Works V8 pays homage to the early high-powered engines in both the Series III Stage 1 V8 from 1979 and subsequent Defenders including the 50th Anniversary Edition, which are highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors today. Defender Works V8 is the most powerful and fastest version that Land Rover has ever created. The 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol V8 powertrain produces 405PS and 515 Nm of torque (the standard Defender delivered 122PS and 360 Nm). The Defender Works V8 will accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.6sec*, while top speed is increased to 106mph. Both 90 and 110 wheelbase Defender Works V8 derivatives will be available to purchase direct from Land Rover Classic, with prices starting from ÂŁ150,000 for a 90 in the UK. A select number of upgrades inspired by Defender Works V8 will also be available to purchase soon from Land Rover Classic, including power upgrades for the TDCi diesel engine, high-performance suspension and braking kits.

The new limited edition Ferrari 488 Pista is the most powerful road-going Ferrari ever to come out of Maranello, so powerful in fact it is limited to participants registered only with Ferrari’s driving program. 205
LUXURY LIVING POWER u
Powered by a turbocharged V8 engine its name meaning ‘track’ in Italian was chosen to pay homage to Ferrari’s unparalleled heritage in motor sports.
Technically, the Ferrari 488 Pista has been designed as a special series track car and encompasses all of the knowledge and experience Ferrari has built up over the past 25 years through its Ferrari Challenge program, one-off prestigious championships that see over 100 drivers split into three continental series do battle at the wheel. A successor to the sensational Ferrari 458 Speciale, the design of the all-new 488 Pista builds upon the fantastic Ferrari 488 GTB platform by adding a host of elements that have been tested and honed out on track. Heading down the sides of the 488 Pista, you’ll find various new veins and vents that channel airflow with complete precision, before ultimately ending up at the rear of the vehicle where you’re greeted by a prominent rear diffuser and new integrated rear spoiler. The front of the 488 Pista features a front F1-inspired S-Duct as well as diffusers derived from the 488 GTE to achieve strong suction and increased downforce. The underbody vortex generators have been redesigned, and the rear diffuser incorporates the same double kink as the 488 GTE to increase air extraction and downforce. The rear also features what Ferrari terms a ‘dolphin tail’ floating rear spoiler. Engine cover, bumpers and rear spoiler are made of carbon-fibre, helping to achieve a weight reduction of 90kg over the 488 GTB; 20” carbon-fibre wheel rims are optional. Specially-developed Michelin tyres complete the set up. The racing livery colour scheme with its contrast central stripes highlights the reshaped front end by diving into the S-duct before re-emerging at the front splitter.. As you’d expect from a track-focused Ferrari, all of these exterior modifications are not just cosmetic, they instead combine to offer maximum downforce and increased handling ability. The result is a car that offers an increase in downforce of 20% (when compared to the standard 488 GTB) and handling that is unlike anything else that we’ve seen in Ferrari’s V8 special series. The driven though closely based on the 3,902cc turbocharged V8 of the 488 GTB has been extensively revised. The V8 engine now punches out 720 metric horsepower, giving it a specific power output of 185HP/litre, the highest figure in its class. 0-100km/h (62mph) takes 2.85s, while 0-200 km/h (124mph) takes just 7.6s. Technical enhancements carried over from the race series 488 Challenge include Inconel exhaust manifolds, lightweight crankshaft and flywheel, titanium con rods and carbon-fibre intake plenums. Torque is higher too at all engine speeds and the exhaust note has been reworked for a crisper, more intense sound as revs rise. Ferrari has yet to release official pricing and as the saying goes ‘if you have to ask you can’t afford it’ which for many will most defiantly be the case! 206 LUXURY LIVING

Yachting News u OCEA NEMO 50 ICE: THE EXTREME PLAYER Conceived with discerning owners in mind, the NEMO 50 ICE megayacht is a new, ambitious project that French Shipyard OCEA is developing in conjunction with designer Fulvio De Simoni. The exhibition yacht will provide owners the opportunity to visit some of the most extreme conditions on earth such as the Polar Regions without compromising on luxury or performance. For possible encounters with icebergs, or another partially submerged object, the yacht will have skegs protecting the drive shafts, propellers, and twin rudders. This is in keeping with Ocea tradition. To ensure you can venture from Antarctica to sandy shores, the power package will permit a 5,000-nauticalmile range at 10 knots and will be able to store a massive 18,492 gallons (70,000 liters) of fuel.
To keep guests comfortable during long stays, the interiors offer a vast amount of space afforded by a wide beam. The owner’s apartment boasts a full-width design and covers the fore section of the main deck – as well as a decadent suite, there is a private lounge and bathroom with space for a sauna. As well as accommodating up to 10 guests, the Nemo 50 Ice has enough space for up to 10 crewmembers.

BLACK PEARL u
THE LARGEST DYNARIG SAILING YACHT IN THE WORLD 220 LUXURY LIVING
u The 106.7m (350ft) three-masted sailing yacht Black Pearl is unlike any yacht the world has ever seen. This unique and complex vessel is the realization of a discerning Owner’s vision. She is the result of an elaborate and successful collaboration on the part of an international group of designers, engineers, naval architects, builders, and project managers. The designers Ken Freivokh Design, Nuvolari Lenard and Villate Design all played a significant role in Black Pearl’s design evolution. Inspired by the 88-metre Maltese Falcon built by Perini Navi, Freivock and his experienced team opted to extend the vessel to 100m (later modified to 106m) in 2011 and the Dutch-based builder, Oceanco was finally selected by the owner to undertake the yacht’s construction in 2012. Dykstra Naval Architects designed Black Pearl’s three 70 meter (230ft) DynaRig carbon masts and sailing system. The sail area is subdivided into smaller lesserloaded sails and they can be set or furled by pushing a button. Astonishingly, all 2,900 square meter of sails can be set in 7 minutes with an ability to cruise with the wind in any given direction Black Pearl arguably has the most advanced sail system ever. BMT, Nigel Gee collaborated with Oceanco to create Black Pearl’s hybrid propulsion system as well as other on-board systems such as waste heat recovery. Since her launch, Black Pearl has proven to be a new generation landmark sailing yacht with a unique identity. Not only is she the largest sailing yacht in the world, but her unique features such as the state of the art DynaRig system, single level engine room, a hybrid propulsion installation, solar panels built within the fabric of the sail allowing the yacht to produce energy whilst in underway – she is set to turn heads the world over - and for decades to come.

Summer is a busy golfing period most recently we saw Tiger Woods try to win his first major title since 2008 at the 100th PGA Championship and in September we look forward to teams from Europe and the United States competing to win the Ryder Cup, so there’s never been a better time to start planning a golf getaway There are more than 30,000 golf courses in the world, so choosing the best is difficult to narrow down. Is it Augusta National in Georgia, home of the Masters? Le Golf National outside Paris, the location of this year’s Ryder Cup in September? Bellerive Country Club in Missouri, which hosted the 100th PGA Championship in August, or somewhere else entirely?

PINeHuRST, NoRTH CARoLINA, uSA founded in 1895, Pinehurst has hosted more golf championships than any other club in the country. There are nine courses set amid pine forests, three luxury accommodations, a spa, and multiple dining and drinking venues spread throughout the resort. The infamous Maniac Hill practice ground at Pinehurst sees an estimated 18,432 balls in play at any one time. KIAWAH ISLAND GoLf ReSoRT, SouTH CARoLINA, uSA With a total of 90 holes designed by some of the golfing world’s greatest names, Kiawah Island Golf Resort was designed so the natural environment plays into the difficulty of the course. THE SWALLOWS OF LALIQUE CELEBRATING 130 YEARS

he name Lalique evokes the brilliance of jewellery, the wonder of transparency, and the brilliance of crystal. Before it became a brand name, it was the name of a man, an artist of genius, René-Jules Lalique and of his heirs who shared his creative flame…
u The iconic French lifestyle brand Lalique is synonymous with “Art of Living”. Since 1888, the prestigious purveyor of timeless savoire-faire classics, Lalique is a tradition passed down with passion by generations of its artists and outstanding French craftsmen. A pioneer of this time, René Lalique, the brand’s legendary founder, captured the world’s attention with his Art Nouveau jewellery in its signature style, suffusing his creations with a rich palette and extraordinary nature-inspired designs of flora, fauna and the sensual female form. He later excelled in the art of Art Deco glassmaking and distinguished his creations by highlighting the fascinating effects of transparency and opalescence inheren To celebrate its 130th Lalique has unveiled its “Hirondelles” Collection. René Lalique was known to be deeply inspired by swallows as a symbol of happiness and freedom thus the new collection plays homage to this and is composed of 18 new models sharing the iconic swallow motif, including vase, dish, bowl, decanter, sculpture and wall sculpture.
236 LUXURY LIVING
Stand out pieces include: The limited edition Hirondelles grand-size vase, in gold stamped clear crystal, features a 130th anniversary logo lasered at the bottom and is limited to 130 pieces worldwide. The design was directly inspired by a René Lalique’s creation, vividly depicting the beauty of swallows in flight. The swallows spread their wings with finely chiseled feathers and are illuminated with gold. Twirling around the vase in a symphony of fluid movements, the swallows draw one’s eye into the swirls of crystal. The vase is a fine example of Lalique’s crystal ware expertise and superb craftsmanship. For the hot glass production, blown technique was employed which took five gatherings of seven glassmakers to fashion each vase. Extreme care was taken when imprinting the decorative motif and for the good repartition of crystal in the mould. Both steps require great technical dexterity: mould temperature, quantity of crystal inserted, etc.

Designed to highlight the flavours of the finest spirits, the Hirondelles decanter enriches the Lalique collection of decanters to satisfy the desires of connoisseurs and discerning collectors. Highlighted by gold-stamped crystal, three swallows soar over the majestic stopper. Made from crystal of the finest quality, this 2018 Vintage edition opens the doors to a universe of everyday luxury living.
The two swallows grand sculpture captures the grace of a couple of swallows, symbols of happiness an freedom. The contrast of satin-finished and re-polished crystal highlights the fine design of their plumage. (Already SOLD OUT)
Fashioned in satin-finished and re-polished crystal, emblematic of Lalique, the swallows are juxtaposed in a graphic play on repetition, available as clear of blue crystal

Colours and brushstrokes can also be accentuated and, if so desired, bleed seamlessly into the base below to create one enormous artwork for the bedroom. Finished with a bespoke plaque detailing the portrait and artist, every commission will be personally approved by The National Gallery to guarantee the design preserves the essence and integrity of one of the greatest art institutes in the world.

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, the world’s leading luxury hospitality company has announced plans for the development of Caye Chapel, a private island in Belize featuring magnificent oceanfront estates, private residences and overwater bungalows. Scheduled to open in 2021, the project is in partnership with Thor Urbana, Inmobilia Desarrollos and GFA Grupo Inmobiliario, three leading real estate development groups based in Mexico.
Four Seasons Resort and Residences Caye Chapel, Belize will transform the intimate private island of Caye Chapel into a luxury destination for residence owners and leisure travellers, with approximately 50 Private Estate lots, 35 Private Residences, and 100 guest rooms and suites. Caye Chapel is located in the Belize archipelago in the Caribbean Sea, adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage designated Belize Barrier Reef System, the largest reef system in the northern hemisphere. The island will feature an 18-hole golf course designed by Greg Norman in consultation with Lorena Ochoa, a Fabien Cousteau nature and conservation institute, a marina and private airstrip. The 280-acre (113 hectare) island is outlined by 6 miles (9.7 kilometres) of white sand beaches and turquoise waters, and is located 16 miles (26 kilometres) from Belize City, either 30 minutes by boat or 10 minutes by flight. The island’s marina and airstrip can accommodate private boats and planes for easy access by owners and guests arriving from further afield. A destination in its own right, the island also acts as a convenient base to explore the nearby cultural and natural sites of mainland Belize and surrounding cayes. For those looking to make their stays on the island more permanent, the development will include approximately 35 Four Seasons Private Residences and 50 Four Seasons Private Estates that owners can help design and build to their own preferences. Each lot will have private beach and golf course access, and owners can choose between a site on the east to enjoy sunrise or on the west for views of the sunset. The Resort will also feature 100 guest rooms and suites designed by Studio Caban, including a collection of overwater bungalows. Guests and homeowners will be able to enjoy a myriad amenities include health and wellness facilities, two beach clubs, multiple dining and bar options with sea views, retail outlets, a young residents club, a marina, tennis courts and the 18-hole White Shark Golf Course designed and reinvented by Greg Norman and Lorena Ochoa. 258 LUXURY LIVING

Bronze aluminium sliding screens cocoon the house and offering protection from the elements as well as providing a unique signature look for of the building. A contemporary yet relaxed looking property, nature pervades throughout the property. The entrance framed by two milkwood trees has floating timber step platforms and pergola leading towards the front door of the home. Upon entering, the panorama is only revealed as one reaches the doublevolume hallway - the aligned timber slat cladded ceilings draw the eye to the seascape ahead. Ocean views are framed perfectly by the screens that envelope the building. The ground floor is designed to seamlessly integrate with the external terraces, pool decks and landscaping while maximising the views across the beach and sea. This area can be enjoyed as one continuous space or arranged into more individual and private spaces. Sliding screens provide flexibility to do this. All the areas open up either onto the sea facing pool deck or to the afternoon sun lit garden on the West. The interiors express simplicity and restraint while making the home comfortable and cosy. Sandcoloured polished concrete floors, bleached timber, natural leathers and grey linens are anchored by soft neutrals and countered with touches of charcoal, teal and azure. The indoor and outdoor decor are aligned to allow for maximum entertainment space. The formal dining table and outdoor terrace table are positioned adjacent each other to accommodate large parties. The lounge and terrace lounge furniture were also chosen to read as one space. The four sea-facing bedrooms are located on the upper level and open onto private individual terraces. When closed, the aluminium screens add an interesting design element to this level. The pool, deck and entertainment areas were placed on the sea facing side of the house, elevated slightly to provide views over the dune plants to further reinforce the connection with the ocean. Materials chosen for the external spaces echo bleached driftwood and the sandy beach. Weathered iroko decking and ceiling slats, honed sandstone and polished light coloured concrete floors form the predominant materials and create a direct relationship with the surrounding environment.

Canary Wharf: Hot on tHe Heels of london’s Great estates u Canary Wharf, the district owned and run by Canary Wharf Group (CWG), is emerging as one of the capital’s modern day great estates.

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u
A relative newcomer to the exclusive club of London landowning, Canary Wharf has joined the ranks of long-established aristocratic families, who together, own over 1,000 acres of prime real estate across great swathes of Mayfair, Chelsea, Marylebone and Knightsbridge. Within 30 short years, the district has been transformed from 97 derelict acres of wasteland into a flourishing financial, and soon to be residential, neighbourhood.
u Under CWG’s careful stewardship, the Estate has become one of the safest, best maintained, connected and most vibrant districts in London. CWG’s coveted position as developer, contractor, owner, freeholder and landlord of the district, has allowed them to carefully shape the future legacy of the Estate. Working alongside world-leading architects and pioneering innovative and sustainable construction methods, Canary Wharf has become a richly diverse community, which combines the finest architecture, new technology, brilliantly curated public art, beautiful public spaces with some of the very best of shopping, restaurants, events and leisure facilities London has to offer. The next stage of CWG’s placemaking, is the development of a brand-new neighbourhood and community, Wood Wharf. This neighbourhood will welcome up to 3,600 new homes, 380,000 sq.ft. of retail space, eight acres of public spaces, plazas and parks, a place where individuals and families can live, work, relax and play while benefiting from security which provide one of the lowest crime rates in London. Amongst this will sit lively high streets, boutique shopping arcades, a vast collection of public art, doctor’s surgery and a brand new two-form primary school. At the heart of Wood Wharf will be One Park Drive, the striking Herzog & de Meuron designed building that will house 483 new apartments. Offering the best in city and riverside living, the apartments will all enjoy stunning views of the surrounding docklands and wider London, as well as private balconies, 24-hour hotel style concierge services and dedicated residents’ amenities.
276 LUXURY LIVING
The Cluster apartments, with their interlocking geometric faรงades, form the heart of the building. With striking interiors by Goddard Littlefair, the Cluster typology contains the greatest variety, with the lower levels connected to the parks and water; the higher floors with the sky. The top floors are home to the Bay apartments, which all boast double-height terraces set back into the building. These properties also feature interiors by Goddard Littlefair, with elegant palettes and cool textures, including concrete walls, timber panelling, pivot doors and natural stone, all of which maximise light.

Brian De’ath, Director of Residential Sales at Canary Wharf Group, comments; “Canary Wharf is one of London’s best run estates, with a vibrant calendar of events, state of the art facilities, beautifully managed green spaces and now, some of the capital’s finest homes. The focus on building communities and creating a lasting legacy has been at the forefront of Canary Wharf Group’s strategy, shifting the capital’s centre of gravity east.” “For centuries, living on one of London’s private estates has been at the pinnacle of real estate. Canary Wharf Group has a unique position of both being able to learn from the capital’s great estates and utilise modern day construction, architecture and design techniques to shape one of London’s greatest districts. One Park Drive now represents the opportunity to live in a local neighbourhood with all the benefits of being part of a private estate.” Divided into three distinct typologies, Loft, Cluster and Bay, One Park Drive is set to become a dazzling addition to the London skyline. Situated on floors two to nine, the Loft apartments are designed to make the most of the connection to the surrounding green spaces and waterfront, with generous wraparound terraces framed by fluted terracotta panels, naturally sheltered within the building’s form. This typology includes interiors by Bowler James Brindley, with contemporary, free-flowing spaces, complete with sliding walls, cool resin floors and unique mother of pearl clad bathrooms. The development will also offer state of the art amenities designed by GA Design, including a residents’ only health club and gym, cinema room, lounge and elegant entrance lobby.
278 LUXURY LIVING
Surrounding One Park Drive lies one of London’s most extensive series of green spaces, with over 8,000m² of versatile living and roof space, 4 urban parks within 20 acres of green spaces, gardens, squares and fountains. The Estate’s biodiversity plan has also encouraged 5 bat species, numerous bird species, tufted ducks, terns and the famous Canary Wharf seal to settle in the area. These green spaces, wider estate facilities and events are managed by a team of over 1,000 staff working around the clock, who have helped made Canary Wharf one of London’s cleanest and safest districts. Not held back by the restrictions of historic architecture, Canary Wharf has become one of the most sustainable estates in Europe, achieving zero landfill waste over the last 8 years and using 100% renewable electricity since 2012. 24 buildings on the Estate are BREEAM certified and earlier this year, CWG launched the UK’s first publically accessible deposit return scheme, allowing workers, residents and visitors to easily recycle plastic items. Home to a daily working population of over 120,000 Canary Wharf has become a blossoming district for technology, finance and media firms. Level39, which opened in 2013, is Europe’s houses over 200 tech companies and claims to be the worlds most connected technology community; helping to shift the district’s ratio between financial and non-financial tenants to 55:45, compared to 70:30 ten years ago. With the opening of the Elizabeth Line bringing fast connections across and out of London, Canary Wharf is truly set to become one of the world’s most recognisable destinations. MGM FRENCH PROPERTIES LAUNCHES EXCEPTIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN
CHARMING CHATEL u Leading French property developer, MGM French Properties, has launched a new development of 15 luxury apartments on the French-Swiss border in the desirable Chatel resort. Nestled in the heart of the picture-perfect resort, La Ferme de Suzanne is bordered by the expansive French-Swiss Portes Du Soleil ski circuit. The collection of 1 to 4-bed apartments are available for outright purchase and boast breath-taking views of both the valley and the village. With starting prices at €355,000 for one bedroom to €730,000 for four bedrooms, the properties range from 51.41m² to a huge 151m² and all residents will benefit from car parking facilities, a ski locker and a private cellar. 289
LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u
La Ferme, which translates as “the farm”, is a nod to Chatel’s rich farming history. The valley is famous for its special breed of Alpine adapted cattle and is very much still a working farming community. The ski-to-the-door residence is ideally positioned at the base of the Barbossine chair lift, in a south facing position which takes full advantage of both the sun and the panoramic views. The 15 apartments which make up the alpine-style boutique development feature cosy rustic interiors which perfectly complement the pleasant personality of the resort. Designed using the highest quality materials, the apartments are fitted with granite worktop kitchens and bathrooms but left unfurnished for owners to put their own stamp on the place. Each property has stone tiling and a balcony in addition to a large bay window, flooding the property with light and taking advantage of the spectacular views. The development is an excellent valley retreat with the ensured quality which MGM are renowned for. The exclusive development is available for freehold or purchase outright, giving owners the flexibility and scope to make the place their own, as either a holiday destination or forever home. The renowned resort of Châtel is conveniently located just 90 minutes from Geneva airport, and is on the French-Swiss Border, allowing residents easy access not only to the stunning French slopes but also to the Swiss resorts of Torgon and Morgins. The area is highly sought-after due to its sunsoaked position and direct access to an extensive number of ski slopes. Despite its prime position, Chatel maintains its village feel, preserving a calm atmosphere which has been relatively uninterrupted by growth in tourism to the area generally. The unspoiled and quintessentially French feel gives this much-loved location a life outside of tourism, a life which transcends seasons to appeal throughout the year. Ski enthusiasts can enjoy access to 49Km (31 miles) of cross country ski trails for which the broad Chatel Valley provides a splendid backdrop. The entire area comprises of 73 pistes and 61 ski lifts with the lifts above Torgon benefitting from exceptional views of Lake Geneva. The pleasant slopes range in difficulty but ultimately offer exceptional intermediate terrain, approximately a third of slopes are suitable for beginners and rest are intermediate or advanced level terrain. For snowboarders there is a terrain park and boarder cross track. Richard Deans, Sales Manager at MGM French Properties, comments “La Ferme de Suzanne is an exceptional addition to the attractive village of Chatel and offers buyers the opportunity to own property in a desirable skiing area. The development is conveniently located in the heart of the resort, perfect for keen skiers and a stone’s throw from a variety of amenities which can be enjoyed after a day on the slopes. “Chatel has retained its authentic, laid-back personality, much unlike many modern ski resorts, while still offering excellent skiing and summer activities. Buyers will benefit from exceptional quality apartments and the opportunity to reap the rewards of the guaranteed rental income offered in the leaseback scheme.” The charming village spans the side of the valley and has excellent local amenities including shops, restaurants and bars. The resort is also home to two cinemas, a bowling alley and an ice-skating rink for when you want a break from descending the mountains. Several small spas provide perfect respite and rehabilitation for your aching muscles. In the summer, the valley is luscious and a splendid region to explore on foot or mountain bike.

Founded in 2008 by entrepreneur Laura Brady, Concierge Auctions doesn’t sell homes in the traditional sense instead luxury homes from around the world are auctioned via a competitive bidding process and sold in a fraction of the time of that of traditional sales methods.
u The homes listed on Concierge Auctions are located all over the U.S. and primarily in scenic vacation destinations such as Hawaii, the Rocky Mountains, France, Switzerland Anguilla, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. At present the company services 38 states and territories and 19 countries around the globe and since its inception firm has generated nearly $2 billion in sales and broken world records for the highest priced homes ever achieved at auction. Its September line-up features some 6 luxury real estate offerings across two US states and two countries. The star attraction is a 15th century, French-style castle in Rancho Santa Fe, California, equipped with smart home technology, and a buildable mountainside ranch in Telluride’s Specie Mesa, Colorado.
