Fine Dining Finca Cortesin has two main restaurants known for their excellence in service and each deliver a luxurious but unpretentious dining experience, both restaurants are overseen by Executive Chef Schilo Van Coevorden. Schilo is the eponymous restaurant as Finca Cortesin in a formal dining room that combines contemporary and traditional features. The open plan kitchen serves modern Arabic and Asian cuisine characterised by lively colours, flavours and smell. El Jardin is composed of two separate dining spaces, each unique in its own way. The interior space features high ceilings, hand painted Portuguese ceramics throughout and restored antique furniture. The interior elegance is juxtaposed with a picturesque terrace with hundred year old olive trees and panoramic views of the Mediterranean. Guests can also order food from the traditional Lobby Bar, the menu includes traditional tapas and Arabiam mezze but the chef will also cater for specific guest requirements.

Finca Cortesin boasts a magnificent par 72 18 hole golf course designed by the worlds leading golf course architects. Thinking of redecorating a room? You’ve chosen the colour scheme, the flooring, flooring, the furniture and accessories but what kind of window treatment will you use?
Even back in days gone by, Neanderthal man used animal hides to cover the windows of the caves and since these times the key reason for dressing our windows has remained the same. Whether for the purpose of privacy or to keep the light and / or heat both in and out there are a number of different options to choose from with a vast range of fabrics, colours, metallic’s, patterns and textures to make our windows the focal point of ever room. Today as consumers we have so many options available to us to create a stunning window design. Whether you choose curtains of which there are many different designs such as tab tops, pencil pleats, sash and so on plus the assortment of blinds which again vary in design from vertical & horizontal slats, Venetians and Romans each with varying ways to filter filter light within the room. When dressing a large picture window you may choose to use a combination of products simply because of the sheer size of the window in particular contemporary homes where entire walls of glass form the windows. For large windows, as opposed to glass walls, you could use vertical or Venetian blinds with curtains to dress the window. The blinds will give you privacy and light control by angling the slats or louvres during the day and both types of blinds can be fully closed at night to create a block-out effect. The curtains will frame the window, which in most cases are never closed and are primarily there for décor purposes.

These window dressing choices also allow you to leave the curtains swept back and open both day and night, (which is a real godsend if your curtains are elaborate swags and tails styles) and also provides unobstructed views outside during the day and total privacy at night when the blinds are lowered. With so many different window dressing styles, either ready made or made to measure, available the daunting task of choosing a dressing for
a large picture window is a thing of the past. Whatever style or design you want it’s available to you. Furthermore, you don’t have to spend a fortune getting the window dressing you want there are plenty of cheap ready made window blinds and curtains in a wide variety of colours, styles and prints. Glass walls typically overlook a stunning view so there’s no problem with privacy. Due to this big advantage many contemporary glass walls don’t have any window dressing or if they do sheer voiles are used. These lightweight curtains are usually hung from motorized curtain tracks, so that at a push of a button the voiles glide closed. Another window dressing which is used is Venetian or vertical blinds which again are remote controlled.

Venetian Blinds Venetian blinds are mainly made from wood or aluminium, which create am ambient feeling when daylight filters through the slats. They are available in two styles either as a vertical or horizontal panel. Not the most heat preserving of window dressings however but because of there tilting slats they provide fantastic privacy but still allow sufficient lighting to penetrate through. Sadly the downside to Venetian blinds is that they are dust traps and will require regular cleaning.

bedroom is a place of serenity. It is a place we go to when we want to forget about the taxes, or the mortgage bills, or the dishes leftover from dinner. However, more often than not, bedrooms are simply a place to store all the annoyances that couldn’t fit in the hallway closet. A bedroom should be the place where we go to find a little bit of tranquillity in a chaotic world.
Unfortunately, creating a calming bedroom is easier said than done. The most important thing to remember when designing and planning your bedroom is to use neutral, relaxing colours on the walls or objects. Secondly, use softer, dimmer lights to make the space more comfortable & cosy. Thirdly, plan the space so that there is enough room to walk around and everything has a logical place. The last thing anyone wants is for a room to be impossible to move around. Keeping these design points in mind, your bedroom should be able to sooth you, whether you are there to sleep or simply fetch a jacket from the closet. When planning your bedroom space it is important to consider the heavy and larger furniture pieces first. These consist of the bed, headboard, drawers, bedside tables, and chairs – if there is enough room for a sitting area. All the other elements are simply decorative such as, rugs, mirrors, bed throws, & photo-frames. Once you begin to plan & design your bedroom, decide on the piece that is going to be the focal point – this can either be the largest piece in the room or even an object that has sentimental value. Then place all the other objects in the room around that particular object. One very important element that must be thought about in your bedroom design is your mattress. I know too many people, myself included, that have back problems. One of the main causes of back problems is sleeping on poor quality mattresses. Take the time to invest in a good mattress that will last you a while and will also save your body from future torment.

After all of these considerations comes the decorating part. This part can either be the most exciting or the most painful task. It all depends on your style. I like contemporary bedrooms, but I also like a mix of classical elements. UDesign create some beautiful contemporary bedrooms that allow for relaxation and practicality.

The most important thing to keep in mind when decorating your bedroom is that all the elements are tied together either through style or colour. The last thing anyone wants is a bedroom that has disjoining elements - this will make the room seem chaotic and it will not give you the sense of relaxation. So, make sure that you have a colour scheme for the room, about three or four colours that can be seen in most of the bedroom objects. These colours can appear anywhere, from the bedspread to rugs, curtains, even the picture frames. Having this link between all the objects will pull the room together, turning your bedroom from a once frenzied space to a relaxing space where you can go and shut off the world. The key when designing a bedroom is to keep all the elements within one style. hoosing fabrics & wallpapers for a design can take an extremely long time. There are so many options with regards to texture, colour, finish, & material. Having to make so many choices can be difficult if the desired outcome of the project is not known. The choice of fabric can either make or break a design.

When selecting a fabric it is important to consider the durability of the fabric, where the item will be placed – indoors or outdoors, and also the aesthetic factor. Although a fabric might be practical with regards to its durability, if it doesn’t look nice, then it won’t add anything to the space. When choosing fabrics although it may look great in a sample book, it might not look so great once applied to your item or space. That’s why working with companies, such as UDesign, who use 3D programs can be so beneficial. You will be able to see how that exact fabric or wall covering will look in your design. This 3D option will allow for you to try before you buy, ensuring that your final fabric choice will be the one you want without any unpleasant surprises.

There are many things to consider when choosing fabrics or wallpapers. Another factor to take into consideration is who will have the highest interaction with the fabric or wallpaper. If the room is more of a formal space then it is perfectly fine to choose a more lavish fabric like silk or satin. However if the room comes into a lot of daily contact with people or pets then it is probably best to chose a fabric that can be cleaned relatively easy as well as one that can last a while. The same applies to wallpaper. Wallpaper should suit the rest of the interior space but also the durability and interaction with the wallpaper needs to be considered. If the wallpaper is placed in a popular section of the house then make sure it is a covering that will not scratch or get damaged easily. Secondly, if you have children who love to write on the walls with food or crayons, consider selecting wallpaper that is easy to clean or replace. In this modern world the possibilities with fabrics and wallpapers are endless. Any pattern can be turned into a fabric that can then be applied to any object. Personally I find the best method when choosing which elements should be covered in fabric is to select the objects that are not the largest in the room but rather the ones that will boost the larger elements. For example, keeping a sofa with a neutral pattern or texture but enhancing it with pillows or throws of different colours and patterns. This will make the space much more interesting and it also allows for more experimentation and
change to be made in the future without having to buy a different sofa every time. Finally, another problem when it comes to fabric & wallpaper choosing is which company or style you should go with. There is a terrific fabric & upholstery company known as Romo, which have four other design houses under its name. All these different houses have different styles & colour palettes. The main brand, Romo, has quite a contemporary and lively feel to its fabric patterns. However one of its daughter brands, Zinc, uses more neutral and seductive palettes to develop more urban and sumptuous patterns. The options with Romo and its other design houses are endless in terms of style and colours. For wallpapers, a French company, Elitis, is a very innovative wall-covering company. They have a variety of patterns & textures to choose from as wall-coverings. Both Romo & Elitis provide the public with a variety of options in order to make your interior truly stand out.

Adopting ideas from automotive design industry, hydraulic powered automatic door controlled by number lock panel is installed on the sloped wall as main entrance to minimize the space required for operation and avoid contact with user while in operation. When the door is fully open, the clearance height is up to 2 meters. The door opens into two pieces, the upper piece lifts up over head, and the lower piece unfolds onto the floor for visitors to step on. When the door is completely closed, the material on the outside of door continues with the material of the exterior surface to achieve co nfo rmity and hid e the entrance.
The modularity of the house offers a customized positioning of openings. The residents can choose the placement of their windows. The bedroom area is completed with curtain divider and bookshelf with translucent middle part to provide privacy. Paints are now available in many different formulas which enable them to decorate every surface in the home, from melamine to ceramic tiles, plastic to masonry, walls, ceilings, woodwork, flooring and radiators. The new advances in paint technology have also enabled paints to be been tailored made specifically for certain areas within the home, such as bathrooms & kitchens. These paints offer durable and mildew-resistant properties and are hard wearing to withstand the ever changing heat temperatures such as from cooking or soaking in that hot relaxing bath. Types of Paint: Water Based Paints are usually referred to as emulsions and were traditionally used only for interior walls and ceilings. But recently tremendous advances in paint technology mean that water-based formulas, especially the highperforming acrylics, are available for all surfaces, from woodwork to metal, and for interior and exterior use. The advantages of these paints, over oil-based ones is that they are cleaner, have less odour and are more environmentally sound. Brushes can be rinsed clean with water. Solvent or Oil Based Paints are used where a tough, durable finish is required for interior and exterior timber, masonry and furniture – although, as mentioned above, the new generation of acrylics and multi-surface paints offers viable alternatives. In general, brushes need to be cleaned with turpentine or white spirit. Make to order all paints are made of four key ingredients: pigments, binders, liquids and additives. Generally speaking, the more pigment used to make the paint, the better the quality it
will be: a ratio of 30 to 45 per cent binder and pigments by volume indicates a paint.
Distemper
A traditional water-based paint made from animal and natural resins, which dries to a velvety matt finish. Primarily used on ceilings and plaster mouldings, and to give furniture an aged effect, but not suitable for areas of high wear.
Eggshell
Traditionally refers to an oil-based paint with a silky finish, suitable for interior walls and woodwork. Water-based alternatives are now available.
Flat or Dead-Flat Oil
Provides a completely flat, oil-based finish. Generally used on walls but not suitable for areas of high wear such as corridors.
Gloss
These paints have a high sheen level and are usually used on woodwork.
Limewash
Made from slaked lime and water, this paint is good for porous surfaces such as brickwork, render and plaster and gives a chalky finish. It is available from specialist companies.
Matt
Describes paints that give a flat, non-reflective finish. It is ideal for walls and ceilings that are not perfectly smooth.
Satin or Silk
Water-based vinyl or acrylic paint for walls in highwear areas, such as hallways and kitchens. A satin finish will be slightly shinier than silk.
Satinwood or Semi-Gloss
These paints are commonly used on woodwork, such as skirting boards. This sheen level is between eggshell and gloss.

Everything changes with the passing of time. What was the ultimate look some time ago now seems to be old-fashioned. This doesn’t only happen in the fashion industry but within all walks of life especially floristry. When it comes to flower design, we firstly look at interior design, and then we ask ourselves: How can flowers compliment our look? With the cosmopolitan mix of cultures and tastes here in southern Spain this mix of interior design helps create wonderful flower arrangments and decor pieces.
Every country has its particular view of floristry fashion, that’s what makes the coast so unique. Flowers are used to give a certain look to a space and this is never more evident then as parties and weddings. Although some people still go for the traditional look, now more then ever a special theme is being chosen. Flowers should enhance and enforce a decoration and add to convert a venue in a very unique way. We are now seeing more and more party themes such as 1001 night, Bollywood, the Sixties, Oriental or Spanish, so you can imagine the different types of flower decorations which are needed to create this final touch. The same happens with colour schemes. Who can tell what the flowers colour of this year is? I am sorry, but I can’t give an answer to this question. This leads to another question. Who decides in the fashion industry what is going to be next year’s colour? For sure the designers are responsible for this. When it comes to flower arranging, something similar happens. A good example is the flower decoration done at the Four Seasons Hotels. It all started in the George V Hotel in Paris. Their florist achieved a real breakthrough, putting flowers upside down, submerged totally in water or letting groups of flowers sit on top of a vase. In spite of these fabulous innovations, the classic style still has its appeal. It is true that white flowers are the most popular choice of flowers because they look great in any surroundings and give a touch of elegance. White flowers are also a good & safe choice when sending flowers as you cannot always be sure about the interior of the person’s house you are sending the flowers too. But when it comes to decorating a party, rules are changing and coloured flowers are the favoured choice because white flower displays do tend to remind us of weddings. Although we think that we are very open-minded, something classic stays present in the back of our minds. The same happens with multi-colour flower arrangement at weddings. Of course the final effect can be smashing, but our preconceptions expect the décor to be white? The only thing that really has changed in flower arranging is the designs of the arrangements. Things seem to be far more natural and the use of greenery is a must now. A flower looks much better when surrounded by different types of leaves. New materials are introduced, like branches, raffia, fruits etc. combining various textures add to achieve a natural but surprising look. So: What is fashion, what is in & what is cool…….? The truth is that there is no satisfying answer. Did you know that male customers mostly prefer multi-colour displays and women normally go for a much softer look? at the end of the day it all depends on personal taste and preferences. Flowers play an important part in our lives, and I am so glad that the flower business is still very individual and can be considered as an art. It all depends on the design and creativity of the florist and some of us really do a good job!!!

The completion is scheduled for 2014.

But during the winter months and cooler evenings sometimes our pools are left untouched and many pool owners forgo using their pools simply because the water is just too cold.
So why heat your pool in Marbella?

Marbella enjoys warm, sunny weather even during the winter months and the pool can look very inviting, however the water temperature will have dropped way below a comfortable level for swimming.
One of the main advantages of swimming pool heat pumps over other pool heating systems is that they require no complicated gas supply, oil tanks or flues and in the main will operate from small capacity electrical supplies.
Heat pumps have a five to one co-efficiency, meaning that for every €1 you spend on heating you get €5 worth of heat energy into the pool.

Background On the 27th May 2006, Las Vegas Sands (LVS) was declared the wining tender of the Marina Bay site in the prime new business district of Marina South with its business-oriented resort. LVS highlighted its forte in Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, Exhibitions (MICE), of which its founder, Sheldon Adelson, is a pioneer in Las Vegas and the key to his early business success. In the Design Evaluation portion of the tender, a panel of local and international architects commended Sands’ design as superior to other bids in terms of pedestrian circulation and layout, and it also fit in with the Marina Bay landscape best. The design evaluation panel liked that the hotel towers were set back from the waterfront to open up expansive views of the city and the entire Marina Bay, making the skyline for Singapore’s downtown more attractive and distinctive.
Design The resort is designed by Moshe Safdie, who says “it was initially inspired by card decks”. In addition to the casino, other key components were the three hotel towers with 2,500 rooms and suites, a 200,000-square-foot (19,000 m2) ArtScience Museum and a convention centre with 1,200,000 square feet (110,000 m2) of space, capable of accommodating up to 45,000 people. and major design changed along the way to accomodate its feng shui consultants, the late Master Chong Swan Lek and Master Louisa Ong-Lee. The Engineering for the project was headed by Arup and Parsons Brinkerhoff (MEP/ELV). Art Moshe Safdie designed an Art Path within the resort, incorporating seven installations by five artists including Zheng Chongbin, Antony Gormley, and Sol LeWitt. The pieces are meant to play on environmental influences including light, water and wind, integrating art with architecture.

Sergio Mart铆nez Cifuentes was born in Concepci贸n, Chile, on the 7th of July 1966.
During his first phase he took to descriptive realism, and showed great mastery of forms and an elegant and contained use of colour in his works. Since 2002 he has taken part in international art fairs of which Caracas, Buenos Aires, California, New York and London are worthy of mention. 2003 saw him complete a mural in Kingston College in Concepci贸n. He later moved to Spain and settled in Madrid where he lives today. From 2004 Sergio Martinez has worked exclusively with the prestigious Sammer Gallery which has a permanent exhibition of his works. In recent years he has exhibited in various European galleries such as the Albemarle Gallery in London and the Vazquez Kunst Gallery in Blaricum, Holland. At present his work is exhibited in the Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This spring he is invited to exhibit in Petley Fine Art in London.

A solid staircase made of wood is never out of style or old fashioned. Wood has an elegant look, is durable, and can create a stylish look to enhance your home with the right hue and design. Obviously the space you have available to you will decide what type of staircase you can have as those suitable for a duplex or townhouses will vary differently to those for a villa or mansion. For a staircase that offers slightly less space try a staircase that offers a wall stringer for support instead of being held in place by steel clamps. This creates a nice open floating feel to the staircase creating a seamless effect which in this instance was constructed in Oak. Finding a staircase for a villa or mansion can be very difficult, the high ceilings, the large open expanse automatically lends itself to a grandiose design. For some this can be very daunting, as there are two very different styles a grand staircase can take, think hotel lobby dull, emotionless and bland or subtle, elegant traditional with a twist and striking. When designing a wooden staircase be sure to match the flooring with the design of the railings. It is best to match the colours or have various shades of one colour design on the balustrades, handrails, treads, and ornamental trims. Bear in mind at all times that a staircase railing is there to hold up balustrades and provide climbers with security. t’s no surprise that in these times of uncertainty in the world, more work, and less time it seems for personal and family pleasures, that a new trend of home garden design to provide stress relief has begun to emerge in Europe.
Gardens to reduce stress may include zen principles such as simplicity (Kanso), austerity (koko), or naturalness (Shizen). While zen gardens have come to refer to raked sand, these stress-reducing gardens are much different. They are often similar to any other woodland or flower garden, only emphasizing certain design principles or colors. Gardens designed for serenity, to help reduce stress just by viewing and experiencing them, may incorporate one or more of the following ideas: Primary colors can be divided into warm (red, orange, yellow) and cool (green, blue , violet). Cool colors are more soothing. You may use a warm color for accent or focal point, but use only one plant, or less than five percent of the overall design. Use tints (lighter) or shades (darker) of the above primary cool colors, or pastels (light combinations of colors). 190

Avoid white, as it is powerful attracting your attention and creating divisions among other colors. Grays or silvers are more calming. When combining colors, use adjacent ones on the color wheel such as green and blue, or blue and violet. These create interest, yet are more serene than contrasting opposite colors such as blue and yellow. Similar to color, avoid large contrasts in other design principles such as heights and textures. Plants of a more uniform height are much more calming than big ones next to little ones, and texture is the visual appearance plants create, such as a fine texture from tiny leaves or ferns, or coarse texture from large leaves such as castor bean. Curves and rounded lines are soothing, than sharp, straight edges and geometric shapes. Keep these in mind when making edges to beds and borders, or paths, beds that are rounded or versions of ellipses, such as a kidney-shaped island bed for perennials or daffodils, are more soothing than square or rectangular beds such as for roses or tulips. Some plants lend themselves more to one bed type than another.

We often return to nature for peacefulness. How is this created? Nature uses large masses of plants, totally informal or placed at random, in large swaths. This may seem peaceful to some, but not to others. To others who like the appearance of control, discrete plants with space and mulch between may seem more pleasing and calming. This control can be seen in Japanese gardens, with their trees and shrubs clipped into precise shapes. Whether control or natural abandon is pleasing and calming depends on personal taste. The sound of gentle water is soothing, so include a small stream or bubbling water feature in your garden. Avoid gushing water fountains or waterfalls if you want relaxation. Scent is the most powerful sense, so you can incorporate pleasing scents in your garden. Which scents are pleasing may vary as well with personal taste. Some scents such as lavender actually can physically help you relax from breathing their essential oils. Don’t forget the sense of touch. Use plants with soft, velvety leaves, or at least not ones with thorns! 192

Following zen principles, the most simple zen garden is often a peaceful one. Less is indeed more in this case. Use few plants, or at least few types of plants. In a woodland, this might be a few wildflowers, with the rest leaf litter. In a shade garden you may simply have moss on the ground (the simplicity, horizontal effect, soft touch, and green color all soothe). Using fewer plants means less maintenance. Or choose plants that require less care, such as pruning or staking. This often means choosing the right plant for the right place. You want to be able to stroll through and enjoy your garden, not constantly be reminded about what is out of control. This is not relaxing! If you are in a busy or noisy area, such as a city, surround the garden with a hedge of plants, wooden fence, or even an earthen berm if space allows. These will provide both a visual and sound barrier to the outside world, often found in Japanese gardens. This means you are able to escape, to shut out the chaos and distractions, this is crucial.

Applying the film is simple but in the event you mess it up, you can lift it up, reposition and re-apply. Many Apple purists refuse such protection but it’s great for keeping your device clean and scratch-free.

Sir
James Dyson is known to millions as the man who made vacuum cleaners sexy again. Not only is Dyson the most celebrated British engineer of his time but he is also the unofficial technology czar of the new Conservative government. David Cameron asked him to come up with a strategy for reviving the great tradition of British engineering and invention, which flowered during the industrial revolution and has been in steep decline ever since the end of the Second World War. Although Dyson is a household name recognisable across the world and is synonymous with the bag less vacuum cleaner, many in the know will tell you that this was not Dyson’s first invention. In 1970, while he was still a student at London’s Royal College of Art, James Dyson co-invented the Sea Truck, with sales amounting to 500 million units. The Sea Truck was a flat-hulled, high-speed watercraft that could land without a harbour or jetty. Sir James Dyson also produced the ball-barrow, a modified wheelbarrow with a ball replacing the wheel, the Trolley-ball (also with a ball) which was a trolley that launched boats and was featured on the BBC’s “Tomorrow’s World” television programme. The iconic invention that we all know of today, The Dual Cyclone bag-less vacuum cleaner was created late in 1970 and as the brand story goes, Sir James Dyson came upon inventing cyclonic separation because he wanted to create a vacuum cleaner that would not lose suction as it cleaned. One day while vacuuming his home, Sir James Dyson realized his bag vacuum cleaner was constantly losing suction power. He noticed how dust quickly clogged the pores of the bag and blocked the airflow, so that suction dropped rapidly.

upported by his wife’s art teacher salary, Sir James Dyson began to work on a solution to this problem, 5127 prototypes and 5 years later in 1983, his bright pink G-Force cleaner was launched. Sadly Sir James Dyson was unable sell his new bag-less vacuum cleaner design to an outside manufacturer or find a UK distributer as he had originally intended, in part because nobody wanted to rock the huge market for replacement cleaner bags, so Sir James Dyson turned his attention to the Japanese Market and began selling the vacuum cleaners for just under £2,000 (British Equivalent) via catalogues.. The Japanese loved these overprized bright pink vacuum cleaners and in 1991 Dyson won The International Design Fair prize in Japan. With the royalties gained from the Japanese market Sir James Dyson took it upon himself to manufacturing and distributing his own product. In June 1993, he opened a factory and research centre near his home in Malmesbury, Wiltshire and began to make his machine. The result was the Dyson Cyclone, which even collected the finest particles of dust and was the first vacuum cleaner ever produced that offered constant suction. 10 years after its initial launch Dyson’s breakthrough in the UK market finally happened thanks partly to a brilliant television advertising campaign “Say Goodbye to the Bag” which emphasized the end of having to continually purchase replacement bags for your vacuum. Within 2 years, Dyson was the biggest-selling vacuum cleaner in the UK. Other companies in the market tried to prevent Dyson showing how their vacuum cleaners would clog and lose suction whilst his wouldn’t. By this time, three in five people were buying a Dyson vacuum cleaner because it had been recommended to them. Following his success with the cyclonic technology other major manufacturers began to market their own version of a bag-less vacuum cleaner which lead to Sir James Dyson having to sue Hoover UK for patent infringement which awarded him $5 million in damages. In 2000, Dyson expanded his range of appliances to include a washing machine. The new technology was called the ContraRotatorT, the world’s first washing machine that contained 2 drums. The two rotating drums moved in opposite directions within the appliance and the machine was made available in Dyson’s signature bright range of colours. However, unlike his vacuum cleaner, the idea was never really embraced by the buying public and is no longer available. Thanks to the savings in production costs Dyson achieved by moving production from the UK to Malaysia, he was able to invest in further research and development at Malmesbury. In 2005 Dyson added the concept of a wheel ball from one of his earlier inventions, the Ballbarrow, to a vacuum cleaner, thus creating the Dyson Ball which he claims “makes it more manoeuvrable”. 2009 saw Sir James Dyson introduce a fan without external blades, the Air Multiplier this was the first real innovation in fans for over 125 years.

Sir James Dyson’s most recent invention is The Airblade Tap, which after more than 3,300 prototypes and millions of pounds in research, Dyson announced this month the launch of his combined faucet and hand dryer in one. Called the Airblade Tap, the three-pronged faucet uses infrared sensors to note hand positions and either release water from the tap stem (the middle prong) or activate the dryer to shoot jets of air out of the two branches on either side of the stem. As you might expect with a Dyson product, the Airblade Tap doesn’t come cheap. Its £1000 (€1160.00) launch price is likely to prove prohibitive for many businesses interested in installing the unit. However, if the cost comes down over time, we can well imagine seeing it becoming a popular fixture in washrooms around the world.

Wood is one of the most appealing materials at an architect or designer’s finger tips. Wood is versatile, renewable, attractive and cost effective. It’s also flexible enough to create anything from strikingly innovative designs to simple, economical structures. It’s surprising how much of our world is and has been built and furnished by wood - be it what we sit around to eat on, lie on at the end of the day, or simply walk around, under or in between. Furniture made of wood is one of the few things in the world that all people can own and know that they are the only person in the world who owns that particular grain pattern and its inherent beauty. Each grain pattern is a unique masterpiece of design, texture and splendour. Even what some may view as a defect, like a knot or other natural blemishes, can add more beauty and character to any given piece of furniture. The classification of wood has historically always been either hard wood; any leaf bearing tree, and soft wood; any cone bearing tree. These terms can be confusing since some leaf bearing trees can have very soft wood and some coniferous trees can have very hard woods. To make this easier, below we list different tree types, classification and then individual wood characteristics within the Softwood family.

SOFTWOODS PINE:

Pine is softwood which grows in most areas of the Northern Hemisphere. There are more than 100 species worldwide.
Several species of cedar grow in the southern United States, Central and South America.
Properties: Pine is a soft, white or pale yellow wood which is light weight, straight grained and lacks figure. It resists shrinking and swelling. Knotty pine is often used for decorative effect.
PINE
Properties: Cedar is a knotty softwood which has a red-brown colour with light streaks. Uses: Its aromatic and moth repellent qualities have made it a popular wood for lining drawers, chests and boxes. Simple cases and storage closets are also constructed from this light, brittle wood.
Uses: Pine’s many uses include flooring, lumber, plywood, poles, pulp, paper, Christmas trees, and pine straw. ASH
REDWOOD:
ASH:
Indigenous to the Pacific United States, redwood trees grow to more than 300 feet tall and 2,500 years old.
There are 16 species of ash which grow in the eastern United States. Of these, the white ash is the largest and most commercially important. Properties: Ash is a hard, heavy, ring porous hardwood. It has a prominent grain that resembles oak, and a white to light brown colour. Ash can be differentiated from hickory (pecan) which it also resembles, by white dots in the darker summerwood which can be seen with the naked eye. Ash burls have a twisted, interwoven figure. Uses: Ash is widely used for structural frames and steam bent furniture pieces. It is often less expensive than comparable hardwoods.
HICKORY
Uses: It is used to craft outdoor furniture and decorative carvings. Redwood burls have a “cluster of eyes” figure. They are rare and valuable. BEECH
Properties: Hickory is one of the heaviest and hardest woods available. Pecan is a species of hickory sometimes used in furniture. It has a close grain without much figure.
CEDAR
FIR: REDWOOD
Uses: Beech is often used for frames, a variety of bent and turned parts. Quarter sliced and half round cut beech veneers are commonly used.
Works easy and finishes well. Uniform in texture and non resinous. Properties: Has low resistance to decay.
HEMLOCK
The American beech is a single species which grows in the eastern half of the United States. Properties: Beech is a hard, strong, heavy wood with tiny pores and large conspicuous medullary rays, similar in appearance to maple. This relatively inexpensive wood has reddish brown heartwood and light sapwood.
Properties: Light in weight, uniformly textured. It machines well and has low resistance to decay and no resinous. Uses: Used for construction lumber, planks, doors, boards, panelling, sub flooring and crates.
Uses: Wood from the hickory is used for structural parts, especially where strength and thinness are required. Decorative hickory veneers are also commonly used.
BEECH:
HEMLOCK: Western Hemlock is a softwood native to North America. It produces a lustrous pale timber that is an attractive choice for carving.
HICKORY: There are 15 species of hickory in the eastern United States, eight of which are commercially important.
Properties: The best quality redwood comes from the heartwood which is resistant to deterioration due to sunlight, moisture and insects.
Uses: Used in furniture, doors, frames, windows, plywood, veneer, general millwork and interior trim. SPRUCE: Spruces are large trees, from 20–60 metres tall when mature, and can be distinguished by their whorled branches and conical form.

Properties: Strong and hard. Finishes well but has low resistance to decay. Has moderate shrinkage and light in weight. Uses: Many purposes from general construction and crates to highly specialised uses in aircraft, and as a tonewood in many musical instruments.
