Taylor & Burton
Hollywood’s Greatest Love Story! 12
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
It’s
hard to think of Elizabeth Taylor without thinking of the fire-and-ice relationship she shared with Richard Burton.
It was a love affair matched only in fiction by; Heathcliff and Cathy or Romeo and Juliet. She was the ultimate Hollywood star, he the greatest Shakespearian actor of his generation. Mesmerising apart, irresistible together. Their love was intense and passionate. The forbidden affair that started on the set of Cleopatra in 1961 between Taylor and Burton, both married to others at the time, is one for the Hollywood history books. According to Burton’s published diary, he met Taylor in 1953 at a pool party at the home of Stewart Granger and Jean Simmons in Bel Air. Taylor was married to her third husband, Michael Wilding, and Burton was married to his first wife, Sybil Williams. At the time, the Welsh actor was making his debut in Hollywood films. A gifted actor, he was smart and charming and spoke in a very distinctive voice. In his diary, Burton recalls meeting Taylor for the first time: “She was, I decided, the most astonishingly self-contained, pulchritudinous, remote, removed, inaccessible woman I had ever seen. She spoke to no one. She looked at no one. She steadily kept on reading her book. Was she merely sullen? I thought not. There was no trace of sulkiness in the divine face.” However Burton couldn’t ignore her beauty, humorously writing, “Her breasts were apocalyptic, they would topple empires down before they withered. Indeed, her body was a miracle of construction and the work of an engineer of genius.” Taylor also recounts there first meeting “he was rather full of himself. I seem to remember that he never stopped talking, and I had given him the cold-fish eye”. It was in 1961, when Taylor and Burton would meet again, on the set of the blockbuster film Cleopatra. The picture was truly historic, as Taylor was the first female actress in Hollywood to earn $1 million for a film. The pair portrayed lovers on screen, with Taylor in the title role and Burton as Mark Antony. Soon, life imitated art when the Taylor-Burton romance ignited in Rome. Taylor was then married to her fourth husband, Eddie Fisher, while Burton was still married to Williams. The passion and love between the two actors was palpable to all who encountered them. Elizabeth Taylor, the dark-haired beauty who lit up the silver screen, lived an epic life full of triumph and tragedy. Her name is still known throughout the world and epitomizes elegance & beauty. While fans fondly revere this movie legend, she is also remembered as the consummate femme fatal who always had the eyes of the world on her every move. This was especially true during the 1960s, when the Academy Award winner began a passionate and complex love affair with fellow actor, Richard Burton. Together, they commanded the international stage and set about a global media frenzy.
But their torrid affair came with a price, both personally and professionally. Burton divorced Sybil Williams, and Taylor ended her marriage to Eddie Fisher. Many fans disapproved. And while the scandal sent sensational shockwaves around the world, the intensity of the love between the two stars was undeniable. SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE

Taylor & Burton
Reputed to be an extravagant spender, Burton proposed to Taylor with a Bulgari pendant, platinum-set with an 18.61-carat emerald surrounded by diamonds. Designed so that it could be detached and worn as a brooch, it was the only jewellery Taylor wore, pinned to her dress collar, during their 1964 nuptial which took place just nine days after her March 1964 divorce from Fisher was finalized.
“I cannot see life without Elizabeth. She is my everything, my breath, my blood, my mind, and my imagination.” The newlyweds embarked on a rollercoaster romance, enjoying a glamorous lifestyle, jetted around the world, and constantly surrounded themselves with extravagance. They had a fleet of RollsRoyces, a jet, paintings by Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh and Rembrandt, a horse farm, Ballycullen Lodge in Wicklow, an estate in the Canary Islands, a villa in Mexico, and houses in Gstaad, Hampshire and Celigny. They bought a 130ft seven-bedroom yacht, Kalizma (which they delighted in mooring alongside Onassis’s Cristina), but usually still chose to stay in hotel suites, booking out entire floors, and ordering room service from different countries; pork sausages from Fortnum & Mason in London while staying at the Ritz in Paris. 14
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
They also made films together, most very forgettable, but two classics. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? for which Taylor won her second Oscar, finally harnessing the explosive energy between them, while Franco Zeffirelli’s The Taming of the Shrew a few years later again provided the magic formula to exploit their chemistry. Their love affair was an affair spelled out in Burton’s remarkable, vivid letters and diary entries. Burton was never slow to articulate his love for the woman he described, exuberantly, after their first meeting, as “so extraordinarily beautiful that I nearly laughed out loud. She... [was] famine, fire, destruction and plague... the only true beget ter”. He wrote to her constantly during their years together sometimes even when she was asleep in the next room, bending all his instinctive understanding of poetry, drama and history to the business of describing the feelings she inspired in him. “In my poor and tormented youth, I had always dreamed of this woman. And now, when this dream occasionally returns, I extend my arm, and she is here ... by my side. If you have not met or known her, you have lost much in life.” Burton showered Taylor in jewels he purchased the famous 33.19-carat, Asscher-cut Krupp diamond in 1968, which she had set in platinum. Just a year later, Burton continued his lavish spree when he acquired for his bride the 69.42-carat diamond from Cartier, known as the TaylorBurton Diamond. Richard Burton outbid Aristotle Onassis for what was then the largest, most expensive diamond in the world, tangible proof of the love in which he invested so much. This flawless, D-colored diamond was subsequently mounted as a pendent on a platinum necklace by Harry Winston as it was too large for a ring. Burton also purchased the Cartier-designed Taj Mahal diamond and ruby necklace, which was a 40th birthday present engraved with the message:
“Eternal Love Till Death”. Burton and Taylor drank excessively, prompting many private and public brawls. Taylor once recalled her tempestuous relationship with Burton by saying “I adore fighting with him. There are all sorts of screaming matches, shouting and yelling, and it’s rather like a small atom bomb going off sparks fly, walls shake & floors reverberate.” But Burton’s drinking and womanizing, by then pretty compulsive, and extending to almost every woman he met, including the wives of friends, co-stars and even very young girls, was a relentless source of conflict. Taylor drank too and often boasted that she could drink her husband under the table but was never as badly affected by it as he was, nor was she as bothered by the downside of fame: the scrutiny, the headlines, the selling of stories. Burton was increasingly bitter about the film roles he felt forced to take in order to keep the Burton – Taylor show on the road, and the often-underwhelming performances he turned in. The insecurity made him vulnerable to flattery and desperate to prove his appeal with opposite sex. SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
15
While the flame ignited between Taylor and Burton was nothing if not fierce, sadly, it did not endure. The remarkable affair with Elizabeth Taylor was so all-consuming that it nearly killed them both, financially and physically. The long years of loving, fighting, drinking and partying took their toll, while proving beyond a doubt that, despite the intensity of feelings, this was a love that never worked as a marriage. The couple divorced in 1974 in a Swiss court. Barely a year later they met again, ostensibly to discuss the divorce settlement, and, both moved to tears by the reunion, literally fell into each other’s arms again. The second marriage came after a long night of agony as Taylor waited for the results of an X-ray that seemed to show she had lung cancer. When the morning brought good news, Burton went down on one knee in the joy of the moment and proposed. They allowed optimism to triumph over experience, and were married again on the banks of a river in Botswana, after which Taylor wrote one of her rare notes: “We are stuck like chicken feathers to tar. Do you realize we shall grow old together, and I know the best is yet to be! Yours truly, Wife.” The love was there, had always been there, but the other problems remained too. Burton continued to drink, to rant and to carouse, while Taylor suffered increasingly from back and neck pain, as well as the addiction to painkillers that was to dominate the rest of her life. Her career was floundering and her need for Burton became oppressive. Just a few months into the second marriage, he met Suzy Hunt, then divorcing racing driver James Hunt. Tall, blonde and sporty, she was the total antithesis to Taylor, and in her Burton saw new possibilities, a new start, away from the destructive cycle of his relationship with Taylor, in which drink fuelled rows, which in turn fuelled more drink, all increasingly bitter and pointless. Their second marriage lasted only one year. The couple divorced for a second time in 1976. Within three weeks of their divorce, Burton married Suzy, while Taylor later went on to marry Republican Senator John Warner. Both went on to marry again, Burton to Sally Hay, Taylor to construction worker Larry Fortensky, but the old magic between them remained, as well as the old antagonism, whenever they met, as they continued to do sporadically, that spark would rapidly ignite, often visibly affecting those around them. If ever there was a couple about whom it could be said “they couldn’t live with, or without, each other,” it may very well have been Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Burton mostly gave up drinking, steadied by the influence first of Suzy and then Sally, but in 1984 a night out with John Hurt was followed by a cerebral hemorrhage. He died two days later, aged 58 it is reported but refuted by his wife Sally Hay that three days before his death, Burton had sent Taylor his final love letter, which was dated August 2 1984.

If ever there was a couple about whom it could be said “they couldn’t live with, or without, each other,” it may very well have been Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Taylor didn’t attend the funeral she claimed it was because she didn’t want to turn it into a media circus, although Sally Hay insists she did not invite her. Taylor visited the graveside alone, a few days later, to say farewell to the man of whom she later said:
“In my heart, I will always believe we would have been married a third and final time... from those first moments in Rome we were always madly and powerfully in love.” Whether Burton did indeed write her a final letter, saying that he was happiest when with her, and that he wanted to “come home”, as she later claimed a letter apparently now buried with her can’t be known. That theirs was a great and glorious love, as irreversible as it was impossible, is beyond doubt.

Spring is in the Air!
The transition from winter to spring is perhaps most sudden when it comes to perfumes. As the weather warms up, spicy, warm and smoky leather scents give way to lighter, brighter compositions. While there really is no rule that certain perfumes can only be worn at certain times of the year, some fragrances embody one season more than any other. Here are five perfumes worth sniffing this spring: Burberry Body Tender The house of Burberry launched Body perfume in 2011. After that, there were numerous variations on the theme such as Body Eau de Parfum Intense (2011), Body Eau de Toilette (2012) and Body Rose Gold (2012) and now this spring the New Burberry Body Tender. The adjectives that describe this new version of Body are tenderness, eternal youth, serenity, ease and charisma. The composition opens with fresh aromas of lemon, apple, peach and absinthe. The core of the composition includes essences of rose, tea leaves, jasmine and sandalwood, all placed at the base of cashmere accords, vanilla, musk and amber.
The One Desire In collaboration with Procter & Gamble, Dolce & Gabbana is launching a new fragrance named The One Desire, a successor of the popular fragrance The One, launched in 2006. The new fragrance follows the trend of black bottles and its most distinctive feature is its carefully nuanced composition. “This is for the woman who wants to feel unique, beautiful and sensual. She owns the room when she enters. She’s not just noticed, she attracts the attention of everybody and is sexy but not vulgar,” said P&G Prestige vice president Luigi Feola. 26
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
The One Desire reveals in the top notes citrusy blend of bergamot, mandarin, lychee and lily of the valley, emphasizing the glamour and glory of a woman. The heart blooms with seductive tuberose which is cleverly laid out on the base which is made of caramel, vanilla, sandalwood and musk. The scent is designed by Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, in cooperation with Givaudan’s in-house perfumers.
Jo Malone Earl Grey & Cucumber High tea may not be the first thing that comes to mind in the category of spring fragrances, but Jo Malone’s take on the British tradition makes perfect sense. True to its name, the cologne features notes of bergamot, Earl Grey, and cucumber on a very light base of musk and vanilla. Like the brand’s other offerings, it’s on the linear side, which makes it perfect for layering over other perfumes for a refreshing lift. Of course, it can also be worn alone.
Guess Girl Guess launched a new fragrance named Guess Girl which arrived on the market in February 2013. The fragrance aims at young woman in her twenties and is inspired by 30th anniversary of Guess brand. Guess Girl is a seductive, floral-fruity fragrance signed by perfumer Laurent Le Guernec of International Flavours & Fragrances. Top notes are dominated by fruity notes of nectar made of raspberry, melon and bergamot. The heart introduces floral notes of Brazilian paradise orchid combined with Provencal acacia and lilies, while the soft and creamy base is composed of Australian sandalwood and Madagascar vanilla.
Lacoste Eau de Lacoste is a new feminine fragrance, the equivalent of the L.12.12 men’s fragrance collection.. This rich fragrance of white flowers recalls clean white cotton shirt scent. It is made of notes of white pineapple, mandarin and bergamot at the top; Sambac jasmine, orange blossom and pineapple blossom in the heart, and sandalwood, peru balsam, vetiver and vanilla in the base. Bottle design is inspired by the shape of a tennis ball. It exudes simplicity and universality which are ideologies of the Lacoste brand. SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE

Conditioner only hair washing or Co-washing to those in the know...
I
t sounds strange, the idea of not using shampoo anymore! It sounded that way to me but it also intrigued me for two main reasons. The first is that over the years I have tried everything to improve the texture of my dry, chemically damaged & flyaway hair to no avail and was willing to try anything that sounded promising. The second was the effect using only one hair product would have on my purse. Over the year in the process of trying to find that miracle product that would give me the full, glossy full of bounce hair (as seen only in the hair commercials!) I have spent a pretty penny, and since I have become very budget conscious (as in, cheap), the idea of buying one bottle of conditioner every now and then sounded good. Many of us assume that by using just conditioner would result in that greasy, limp hair that most of us dread. However, the method of co-washing (conditioner washing) is gaining in popularity. Why? Women (particularly those with dry or colour-treated hair) want to avoid the harsh effects of shampoo detergents on their hair. Here I take a closer look at this emerging hair care trend.
How can conditioner wash hair? There is actually science and logic to support this hair care regime. Shampoos are typically composed of about 10-15% detergent. They use surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate which do an excellent job of cleaning and removing oil from hair. Conditioners also have detergents, but they are different than those found in shampoos. They use cationic surfactants (or quats) which have the tendency to stick to the hair, which is how they provide conditioning. Common quats are Cetrimonium Chloride or Distearyldimonium Chloride. They’re used at levels between 1% and 5%. Although they do stick to the hair, these ingredients also have the ability to cleanse the hair.
Is there a downside? Your hair certainly won’t feel as clean as it does after shampooing. Conditioner can build up on hair, making it feel heavy and greasy. It will also attract more dust and dirt from the air. Your best bet is to use a conditioner that does not contain silicones since silicone can build up and weigh hair down. In this case, cheaper conditioners are actually better since they usually don’t contain silicones. Don’t you love it when cheaper is actually better?
Conclusion This method is not for everyone, but some people will like the way it makes their hair feel. Conditioning only means your hair will have less exposure to harsher detergents, the product will be less damaging and may even do a better job of protecting your hair colour and shape, plus will improve your scalp health by discontinuing the use of sebum-stripping shampoo.
28
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
However, if you have oily hair, very fine hair (that rules me out then!) or just can’t stand that “coated” feeling of conditioner, then this is likely not an option for you but since most women already have conditioner in their showers, you can easily experiment with this method without having to spend a fortune…

TO RECREATE WHAT NATURE INTENDED IS NEVER EASY‌
IF
something happens to your natural teeth, what do you do? In the past dentures really were the only solution however, over the past two decades the increase in dental implants has grown dramatically and many people now are benefitting from a safe, medically proven alternative that delivers confident living. Sunsearch Magazine speaks to specialist implantologist Dr Martha Laguilavo of Dental Care Dentists in Laguna Village to find out all there is to know about dental implants.

SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
What is an implant? An implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw bone to hold a replacement tooth or bridge securely in place. Dental implants can be used in a variety of situations, whether you need to replace a single missing tooth or many teeth. You can lose teeth in many ways either by accident, because of dental decay and/or inammation of the gums and the surrounding strengthening tissue which will eventually lead to the complete loss of your tooth / teeth and you will then have to turn to dentures, however with dentures over time the jaw bone will shrink, leaving
What are implants made of? Implants are made of titanium and look like little ‘screws’ they have a diameter varying from 3.3 to 4.8 mm and are between 6 to 16 mm long. They are about the same size as a natural dental root.
Is Titanium safe? Titanium is among the so-called tissue-friendly materials, titanium is the most appropriate metal for the construction of implants. Therefore titanium is used very frequently in modern medicine (for example for bone fracture plates, artificial joints and pacemakers). Titanium is completely accepted by the human body; in other words, the body does not reject the strange material.
Can you explain the need for implantation in dentistry? Since time immemorial dentistry has always tried to replace lost teeth as naturally as possible. Within our mouths nature developed a perfect chewing system that can never be completely replaced by artificial means however, an implant in the jaw as a pillar for tooth replacement is the closest one can get to a natural dental root. By now, placing implants within the mouth has become a reliable treatment method and it normally leads to a predictable good final result.
Can you explain the purpose of an implant in more depth? An implant serves as a replacement of a real dental root and offers a footing to: 1. A crown (replacement of one single tooth or molar) If one tooth or molar is missing, for example by an accident, an implant can be placed in the created space. At a later stage a crown is installed onto this implant. This treatment has the major advantage that the adjoining teeth are left untouched and do not need to be ground for the placement of a bridge. 2. A bridge (replacement of several teeth or molars) If a couple of teeth or molars are missing, a bridge or a partial prosthesis (frame or plate) can be made. For the instalment of a bridge it is necessary to grind the teeth down. This is a pity of course, especially when it concerns healthy teeth and molars. Wearing a frame or
little support causing the dentures to become loose. Implants are not only used to secure single teeth but can be used to replace a full denture. As anchor points, implants can also securely attach a partial denture or bridge, for instance if you have a set of false teeth, you might consider the possibility of implants to firmly place them into your jaw. In all these cases you will be able to eat, talk and laugh just like before but with more confidence.
plate is often considered to be a nuisance and moreover it places a load on the teeth and molars that are still present. Implants can be an attractive alternative. It is possible to make a bridge construction on the implants, just like with natural dental roots. 3. Dentures If all teeth and molars are missing and the existing dentures are not fixed tight enough on the jaw, then it is possible to click the false teeth onto implants. In addition, shrinkage of the jaw is slowed down significantly by the presence of implants.
When can implants be applied? If you have good general health, if you keep your mouth nicely clean and if the jaw is suited for it, then implants can be used. Implants can be used by both young and older people. At Dental Care we will make a careful assessment and inform you at the possibilities.
Are there some instances where it is not possible to use an implant? Yes, sometimes the jaw bone has shrunkto such a degree that it is too small and/or too low to place an implant. Examination of the jaw bone will decide this. In these cases additional techniques are needed to allow placing an implant. In addition for patients who use certain medication, or smoke a lot or are not able to keep their natural teeth in a good condition, implantation may not a good idea.
Can you explain the implant procedure? The implantation procedure consists of 5 phases: 1. The examination: The examination consists of a medical and a dental part. X-ray pictures can help in determining whether sufficient bone is present. 2. The implantation: Placing an implant is a small surgical operation. This operation can usually take place with local anaesthetics An opening in the gums is made; then a hole is drilled in the bone, fitting the implant perfectly. The operation takes, depending on the number of implants, usually around 30 to 90 minutes.
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
33
In general the after effects like pain and swelling are not so bad. Swelling following the operation can be limited by cooling the cheek. 3. The phase of growing in: It will take Âą 6 weeks up to 3 months for the implants to grow into the jaw. The time span depends on a number of factors like bone quantity and quality. During the phase of growing in, the healing progress will be checked regularly. If desired, an emergency solution for aesthetics reasons can be made. 4. Placement of the implant structure: After the period of growing in, the implant structure is placed. On this structure the teeth replacement (a prosthesis, bridge or crown) can be fitted. 5. Aftercare: Good mouth hygiene and regular check-ups (each 3 to 6 months) are essential for a long life span of the implants. Extensive studies and experiences have already shown that implants, if they are properly taken care of, will still function perfectly after decades.
Does an implant ever fail? Yes, in about 1.5% (upper jaw) to 5% (lower jaw) of the cases, a failure does occur. The implant does not grow into the jaw or comes loose after some time. In these cases the implant can cause sensations of pain and it will have to be removed.
Benefits of Implants: Choosing dental implants from Dental Care offers you a number of significant advantages: More healthful and beautiful smile: When teeth are missing, the surrounding bone begins to shrink. This unhealthy bone loss can make your jawline recede. Dental implants can help prevent deterioration of the jawbone caused by loss of teeth, so your face retains its natural shape. As an alternative to bridgework, dental implants eliminate the need to grind down healthy teeth when replacing one or more adjacent teeth. More comfortable: Because dental implants are securely anchored, there is no slipping or movement as there is with dentures. This eliminates some of the key worries of dentures, including poor fit, gum irritation, and pain from exposed nerves. More confident: With dental implants, you will never need to cover your mouth when laughing, smiling, or speaking. You can eat your favourite foods without pain or fear of embarrassment - and taste every bite. You will look better, feel better, and live more confidently.

P The great health debate...
rince Charles has recently become embroiled in the row over the use of alternative medicine after he gave a speech embracing the practice. Speaking at the World Health Organisation, the Prince, a long-term advocate of complementary medicines, urged delegates to be ‘openminded’ about alternative therapies. The prince said: “Modern medicine needs to adapt a more integrated and holistic approach.” He added: “I believe that the proper mix of proven complementary, traditional and modern remedies, which emphasise the active participation of the patient, can help to create a powerful healing force for our world.
by Dawn Gudgin
Thankfully I have always been quite a healthy person occasionally I may pop a Paracetamol but that is about as far as it goes, but the Prince’s comments did get me thinking, what other alternatives are there and how affective can they really be?
Many people across the world use complementary and alternative medicine or “CAM” in addition to traditional or conventional treatments and therapies. Today’s complementary therapies are rooted in ancient traditions that intuitively understand the need to maintain balance and harmony with our minds, bodies and the natural world. The philosophy behind complementary medicine is that by restoring the balance of our body, mind and spirit we can achieve good health and well-being. For example, if we feel unduly uptight this may be expressed as a physical symptom such as a stomach ache, or headache, so by treating everything as one we can heal all of the problems. There are a wide range of different complementary therapies. Here, I give you some details of some of the most widely practised.
Acupuncture: An ancient Chinese art based on the theory that Qi energy flows along meridians in the body, and can be stimulated by inserting fine needles at specific points. Acupuncture is used to treat asthma, addiction, arthritis, depression, anxiety, blood pressure disorder and problems with the digestive system. There are a wide range of studies demonstrating that acupuncture has a positive effect, including evidence to suggest it works by deactivating pain centres in the brain.

Aromatherapy: The use of essential oils in treatments to improve physical and emotional wellbeing, relieve pain and alleviate tension and fatigue. Each aromatic oil, extracted from different parts of plants, is thought to have unique therapeutic properties. They can be added to a bath, massaged through the skin, inhaled directly, used with teas, or scented in a room.
Crystal healing: The use of crystals, gemstones and minerals in several ways to amplify and accelerate the self-healing processes within the individual patient. The theory is that healing can be speeded up by the interaction between the vibrational structure of the crystalline matter and the bio-magnetic energy patterns within the human body.
Herbal medicine: It is believed that as much as 80% of the world outside the industrialised countries relies on herbs for health. In fact, many commercially produced pharmaceutical products are derived from herbs, but herbal medicine uses the whole plant rather than an extract. Herbal medicines are used to help most illnesses including migraine, arthritis, depression, insomnia and lung, stomach, blood and skin disorders.
Homoeopathy: This works on the principle that what makes a healthy person unwell can be used to treat the same symptoms in someone who is unwell. But homoeopathic medicines are diluted to a high degree. They are used on asthma, allergies, anxiety, tension, menstrual problems and morning sickness.
Hypnotherapy: A method designed to induce relaxation to relieve certain symptoms or bring about a change in life style It combines the skills of counselling and psychotherapy with the techniques of hypnosis. The induction of hypnosis produces an altered state of consciousness or awareness, similar to day dreaming or near-sleep.
Magnet therapy: The use of magnets to help relieve muscular aches and pains, insomnia, headaches, and poor bladder control. It has also been claimed that the technique can have a positive effect on more serious conditions, such as cancer and circulatory diseases. The therapy is controversial, and is not advised for people having radiotherapy treatment, or those who wear a pacemaker.

Massage Therapy: The manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes, which may include the use of oil, salt glows, and hot and cold packs. Designed to create a state of being both relaxed and alert, relief from stress, faster recovery time from an injury, and a greater sense of self-awareness.
Osteopathy: A widely respected therapy which also has a regulatory council. Osteopaths manipulate the muscles and spine to improve mobility and balance. It can help with many types of injury and be useful in treating arthritis, sciatica, headaches, depression and digestion problems.
Reiki: A technique developed in Japan which aims to promote the body’s own capacity to heal itself. The practitioner gently places his hands in specific positions on the body It is based on the belief that, by channelling spiritual energy through the practitioner, the spirit is healed, and the spirit, in turn, heals the physical body.
Reflexology: A type of deep foot or hand massage designed to relax the whole body through the reflex response. The thumbs are used extensively to break up crystalline deposits which have formed at the nerve endings, particularly on the bottom of the feet. There is some research to suggest that therapy can have beneficial effects, particularly on kidney and intestinal function.
Shiatsu: Shiatsu means finger, or thumb pressure. Like acupuncture, it is based on the theory that meridians, or lines, of energy run through the body, and can be manipulated. Techniques include pounding, stretching and rocking. Pressure may be applied by use of forearms, elbows, palms, feet and knees. The end result should be greater mobility and flexibility, a clearer sense of one’s body, and a sense of being both relaxed and energised.
Yoga: Has been shown to alleviate stress and, at the physical level, yoga has been seen to be useful in the treatment of those who suffer conditions that affect or are affected by posture, such as backache and arthritis.

are other possibilities. If you choose a strong colour such as one of these, you might consider adding lighter shades for a monochromatic but impressive colour scheme.
Contrary to modern sentiment, white wedding dresses were not originally a sign of purity and childhood innocence. They reflected the social status of a woman who could afford to be married in a white dress that she would only wear once in her lifetime, as in the case of Queen Victoria. Within a decade, however, the attachment to virtue would be created, and what bride would not want to be thought of as virtuous?
A spring wedding, by contrast, might favour lighter colours such as turquoise, lemon yellow and mint green. Combining a light and a deep pink with green and white creates a striking palette. Tangerine, lilac, lime, yellow, hot pink and soft violet shades are other trendy colours for spring weddings.
While white is still the favourite choice in wedding gowns for 80–90% of modern brides, it is far from the only option. Today’s bride is free to be married in the style and colour that best suits her personality, taste and appearance. After all, she’ll be remembering this day the rest of her life. When it comes to choosing your wedding colours, you really can’t go wrong. Today’s newest colour trends even encourage combining colours that wouldn’t necessarily be chosen together, here we look at some examples. Winter weddings can be magical with a snow white, cranberry and platinum colour scheme. Throw in some hints of deep berry for accent, and you have a beautiful combination. Royal colours such as navy blue, emerald green and regal purple

Summer weddings look lovely in red, orange, yellow, lilac, lavender and various blues. A combination of dark purple, lavender and earthy green is stunning. Tying together silver, green and light purple is another great option. How about royal blue with light yellow and white? Black, white and yellow weddings are sophisticated, but pink, green and orange colour schemes can be lovely as well. Destination and theme weddings have become increasingly popular in recent years. Follow the colour clues of your exotic location for a perfectly picturesque wedding. For example, if you will be by the beach, consider butter yellow and chocolate brown with sunset colours for accents. Island weddings are beautiful in navy blue with yellow and white floral accents. The aqua of the water, the blue of the endless sky and passionate bright red are also local favorites.
There is a n old about how the colour Victorian poem will influe of your wedding d nce your f ress uture: Married i n white, yo u will have Married i Married i n grey, you will chosen all right go nb Married i lack, you will wish far away yo n Married i red, you’ll wish you urself back n r Married i blue, you will alway self dead n s Married i pearl, you’ll live in be true Married i n green, ashamed a whirl to n Married i yellow, ashamed of be seen n t Married i brown, you’ll live o he fellow u n pink, yo ur spirits w t of town ill sink.

Vera Wang Spring / Summer Collection 2013 India was Vera Wang’s starting point for her spring 2013 collection. Literal references weren’t really Wang’s focus though, rather what she had to offer were textures, prints, and colors. The first quarter of the collection was all white. The show started with an almost plain cotton cutaway jacket and a cotton voile dancing skirt. Another look delivered surface appeal via lace jacquard, guipure, and cotton eyelet. And when the color came it was strong Wang was in mix mode, pairing narrow tunics embroidered in gold bullion with brocade Bermuda shorts. Still, the prettiest numbers in the show were the sleeveless sheaths in Chantilly lace utterly simple but bejeweled at the waist or on the shoulders. Manhattan or Mumbai, this is a collection you can wear everywhere.

This ring was part of a social media experiment by award-winning Jewellery Designer, Andrew Geoghegan who specialises in designing Engagement & Wedding rings alongside spectacular Cocktail Rings which Sunsearch has featured in our last two editions. Over 12 weeks in 2012, Andrew asked his Facebook fans to take part in an experiment, asking them to choose from various design processes and rock choices in order to build a completely unique ring. Over 2,500 p e o p l e took part.
Embrace
The Embrace is set to be a designer engagement ring classic. The fluid twisting of the ring sets this ring apart from others.
The result of the experiment is a quite incredible diamond ring. The overall design is beautifully simple. A diamond is held in clear view and the setting is designed to show off as many surfaces of the stone as possible. Perfectly suited as an engagement ring.

the city of‌
If
New York is the city of dreams and Paris is the city of love then Venice would be the city of romance. For years Venice has dominated the title of the most romantic city in the World, Love affairs and famous lovers, in fact the entire history of Venice has all in one way or another been intimately linked to Cupid and his romantic arrow.

Venice is one of the few cities in the world that can be truly described as ‘unique’, named in honour of the goddess Venus, the ancient Roman Goddess of Love, the city is “undoubtedly the most beautiful city ever built by man” as described by Luigi Barzini in The New York Times. Venice was founded in the 5th century and is built completely on water it is spread over 188 small islands which are tied together by some 400 bridges and is surrounded by some of the most breath-taking scenery in all of Italy. Venice comprise of an enchanting series of canals and splendid palazzi that rise up from the shimmering waters of the Venetian Lagoon as if from nowhere. Each corner of the town exhibits individual architectural magnificence; beautiful churches adorn the banks of the Grand Canal as she snakes her way through the city, lovers wander through the streets enjoying the company of their partner and art lovers take pleasure in the momentous museums and galleries. Venice truly is a fairy tale city where you are encouraged to indulge your senses and selfishly savour every moment of it.
Places to visit: A visit to Venice would not be complete without a graceful and romantic glide down the Grand Canal on a gondola. The Gondola is one of the most well-known and romantic images portraying Venice and is also considered the most elegant means of transport. Gondolas are believed to date as far back as the 7th century and were once the chief form of transportation through the canals of Venice. Today gondolas are so loved all and are used by tourists, lovers, and Venetians for

Venice, regattas, or wedding ceremonies. The beauty of a modern day gondola is they penetrate into the city allowing you to see the most hidden parts of the city that would be otherwise out of bounds. Piazza San Marco, often known as St Mark’s Square, is the heart of Venice. Founded in the 9th century, Piazza San Marco is the place where lots of Venice’s festivals are held, here you can see a number of beautiful and historical monuments.

Piazza San Marco is extremely popular with tourists, photographers, and pigeons. Some of the major attraction of the place includes the Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s Basilica, St Mark’s Clocktower, the Procuratie Vecchie, the Napoleonic Wing of the Procuraties, the Procuratie Nuove, St Mark’s Campanile and Logetta and the Biblioteca Marciana. The Doge’s Palace is one of the main landmarks of the city and dates back to the Renaissance period when it was used as a residence of the rulers of Venice. The structure is made up of three large blocks, incorporating previous constructions. The wing towards the St. Mark’s Basin is the oldest, part of the palace built around 1340. The wing towards St. Mark’s Square was built in its present form in 1424. The canal-side wing, housing the Doge’s apartments and many government offices, dates from the Renaissance and was built between 1483. This really is a sight to behold, with its pink and white marble and beautiful arches. At it’s time The Doge’s Palace was the heart of the political life and public administration of the Venetian Republic therefore, when the Republic fell in 1797, its role inevitably changed. Venice was firstly subjected to French rule, then to Austrian, and ultimately, in 1866, it became part of a united Italy. Over this period, the Palazzo Ducale was occupied by various administrative offices and housed important cultural institutions. Today, it contains a collection of the world’s greatest artworks by Bellini and many other famous artists. The Basilica di san Marco is a major tourist attraction in Venice. This lovely church was built in 829 to hold the remains of Saint Mark, the city’s patron saint and was devoted in 1024. It has been reconstructed and decorated numerous times over the centuries and the Basilica is definitely the most sensational church in the city. Its main facade is very unique. The church has five arched doorways, and a long terrace. The work of this church is in Byzantine style. The interior of the church is just as extravagant as the outside. It has a marble floor that has a striking geometric pattern and there are brilliant mosaics on the walls that tell stories from the New Testament. It also features Venice’s symbol, the golden winged lion. Commissioned by Doge Agostino Barbarigo in 1493, the glorious Torre dell’Orologio, also known as St. Mark’s Clock Tower, or “the Moor’s Clocktower,” facing into Piazza San Marco is a marvel of 15th century engineering. It was designed by Maurizio Codussi and built in 1496. The clock displays the time, the phase of the moon, and the dominant sign of Zodiac. Venetian legend holds that when the clock was revealed on February 1, 1499, it was so beautiful that the doge had the clockmaker blinded, so that he could not create another to rival it
74
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
Venice, Over the years the clock and the tower buildings have been modified and restored, including the addition of one of the world’s first digital displays in 1858. Most recently, in honour of the clock’s 500th anniversary the clock underwent a full restoration which was revealed in finally 2006 after 8 years of being hidden behind scaffolding. The bell that rings today is still the original cast from 1497 Santa Maria Della Salute is the ornamental and unique church that lies between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco. Here, you can visit the art gallery attached to the church to see some outstanding works by Tintoretto and Titian. Venice is also the home to the world’s oldest Jewish Ghetto. It was constituted by the Venice’ Ruling Council in 1516.
Connecting the districts of San Polo and San Marco across the Grand Canal in the heart of the city, is the Ponte di Rialto also known as the Rialto Bridge. The bridge has become one of Venice’s most recognizable icons and has a history that spans over 800 years. This bridge has always been a busy crossing in Venice, for nearly three hundred years, it was the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot but instead of being crowded with merchants like during Venice’s heyday, the bridge is now swamped by tourists. Ponte di Rialto, is probably one of the most romantic locations with its elegant arches, steps and shops, and mass of water traffic passing underneath you instantly feel transported back in time to the days of the merchants.

Carnival of Venice It
is said that the Carnival of Venice was started from a victory of the “Repubblica della Serenissima”, Venice’s dreamlike ancient name, in the year 1162. In honour of this victory, the people started to dance and celebrate in San Marco, it’s not known if those famous masks were part of the party back then but it is true that this celebration was the start of an on-going tradition. Wearing masks has always been more than just simple fun for the Venetians; it is still a strongly felt tradition with deep cultural roots. Venetians were famous for being libertines and for transgression - they didn’t just use masks during the official Carnival. Putting on a mask in Venice meant taking forbidden liberties: you could jibe at the powerful, gamble without being caught, take risks over love or business deals and even enter convents without being seen. A numbers of restrictive laws passed on dressing up prove how widespread the habit was. There is evidence to suggest that it was a practice adopted by all levels of society from masked criminals to aristocrats indulging in fruity activities with ladies of the night, who were also often masked. This confirms one of the most commonly believed reasons why masks were worn in the first place; to hide and protect one’s identity. The fifteenth century saw the popularity of masked balls and carnivals take off all across Europe, with masks crafted from traditional Venetian Mascherari (maskmakers) being true objects of desire.
78

79
By this point masks were an integral part of any event in Venice, from cultural to political, the act of wearing a mask in government provided anonymity in democratic voting. Royalty across the globe took influence from Venice, hosting their own versions of masked balls and ordering their own masks from the most famous Venetian workshops. It may, surprise many to know that after centuries of tradition the Carnival of Venice ceased to be a regular event on the calendar of Venetians during the 1700s, possibly due to local laws aimed at banning masks being worn because of their association to criminal activity or perhaps because it was a fashion that finally faded, but in 1979 the Italian government 80
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
brought it back with much pomp and ceremony including a competition for the most beautiful masks, an award much coveted by those who continue the Venice tradition of creating masks which can be made from porcelain, glass or leather featuring details in gold, silver, precious gems and feathers. The most widely used mask, for which Venetians would spend absolute fortunes, was the ‘bauta’: it was an ample full-cut black mantle which dropped over the shoulders down to the waist. On their heads they wore the typical black, three-cornered hat (the tricorno), and on their faces a white mask called ‘larva’, with a widened, protruding lip that altered their voices.
The bauta was used by both men and women who wore it in black in winter and white in summer. There was also a series of masks for different special occasions: one of these was the ‘moretta’: a black velvet oval, normally worn by women, especially when they visited convents. This was a “mute” mask: it was placed over the face and had a small button that went into the mouth to prevent speech. The Medico della Peste, with its long beak, is one of the most bizarre and recognisable of all Venetian masks. The striking design has a macabre history, originating from 17th-century French physician Charles de Lorme, who
adopted the mask together with other sanitary precautions while treating plague victims. The mask is white, consisting of a hollow beak and round eyeholes covered with crystal discs, creating a bespectacled effect. Today, the masks are often more decorative, with the event attracting up to a million visitors a year, all competing to show off their magnificent and often very expensive costumes. The Carnival itself lasts two weeks with shows, balls, music and plays organized all over the city. The modern Venetian carnival culminates on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (known as Mardi Gras) commencing two Fridays before the Tuesday (Venice’s carnival dates therefore change annually in line with Easter). INTERNATIONAL TAX & WEALTH MANAGEMENT
What Does 2013 Have In Store, Tax Wise? By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks New Reporting Law The big story here in Spain is the new asset reporting law. This is a significant game changer. The government warned that it would get tough on tax evaders once the amnesty closed at the end of last November, and they will now impose very high penalties on anyone failing to declare their offshore assets under the new law. The first reporting deadline is 30th April 2013, and reports can be submitted in March and April. In future years it will be 31st March, with reports to be filed from January. Under this new obligation, all Spanish residents, whatever nationality, have to declare all assets held abroad if the value of each asset class amounts to €50,000 or more. This includes bank accounts, shares, bonds, funds, life assurance, property etc. You will need to report assets if you are the owner, beneficiary or an authorised signatory. It includes assets held in a trust. A new form will be released for this purpose, to be submitted on top of your annual income tax and wealth tax returns. The penalties for failing to comply can be devastating. It is possible, for example, that you would need to pay more than the total sum held in your offshore bank account. You therefore need to make sure you get it right. A tax advisory firm like Blevins Franks, which specialises in tax planning for British expatriates in Spain, will guide you on what you need to declare. At the same time it would advise you on steps you can take to make your assets more tax efficient. 88

2013 Budget
2013 Income Taxes
The 2013 Budget thankfully did not contain the same sort of tax rises as the previous year.
Income taxes in 2013 remain high. As introduced last year, an additional contribution of between 0.75% and 7% is added to the scale rates of income tax for 2012 and 2013 income. Additional tax of between 2% and 6% applies to savings income for the same period.
Those with worldwide chargeable assets above the wealth tax threshold (residents have an individual allowance of €700,000 and main home allowance of €300,000), though, will be hit by the tax for another year. Wealth tax has been extended to apply for assets held as at 31 December 2013. From 1st January 2013, capital gains on assets held for less than 12 months are taxable at your marginal income tax rate. This is up to 52% (54% in Andalucía) instead of the current fixed rates (21% to 27%) applicable to investment income and gains. Lottery winnings over €2,500 are now subject to tax at 20%.
You may well see a noticeable increase in your tax bill when you prepare your 2012 return. Speak to an adviser like Blevins Franks to find out what you can do to reduce tax on your savings, investments and wealth.
UK Statutory Residence Test
The Future?
Until now HMRC has only provided guidelines as to what makes a person resident or not resident for tax purposes in the UK, as there has been no statutory guidance. This has caught some people out.
There is a general worldwide move towards exchanging information and levying taxes at rates not seen for many years. The world is changing, but there are still ways to protect your assets, and these are becoming more and more important as countries adopt austerity budgets. Seek advice from an established professional tax and wealth manager in Spain like Blevins Franks.
The situation should improve when a new UK statutory residence test comes into effect on 6th April. There will be definitive tests to determine if you are UK resident or not resident. If you do not fall into either category, your residence status will depend on the number of connecting factors you have with the UK and how many days you spend there in a tax year. While the test is a big improvement on the current situation, it is still very detailed and complex so you should take advice to make sure you get it right. It will not override the UK’s double tax treaty provisions with Spain, so you also need to be clear on Spain’s residency rules and how they interact with the UK’s, and how the treaty affects both of these.
The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual should take personalised advice. To keep in touch with the latest developments in the offshore world, check out the latest news on our website

Within the last edition of the Sunsearch Magazine we looked at some endangered animals that either through natural or un-natural selection where sadly listed as critically endangered animals who over the next few years could disappear altogether.
This status of endangered however does not just affect the loveable and cute animals that we all coo and ahh over, being an endangered species has affected every aspect of our planet. Within this issue we look at the marine species that have been deemed critically endangered and without some human intervention now could be wiped from our planet forever‌.

Life on the
Marine Turtles
F
or more than 100 million years marine turtles have covered vast distances across the world’s oceans, filling a vital role in the balance of marine habitats. Seven different species of marine turtles grace our ocean waters, from the shallow sea grass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the colourful reefs of the Coral Triangle, and even the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific, these are: green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, olive ridley, flatback & kemps ridley. Marine turtles are a fundamental link in marine ecosystems. They help maintain the health of sea grass beds and coral reefs that benefit commercially valuable species such as shrimp, lobster and tuna. Marine turtles are the live representatives of a group of reptiles that have existed on Earth and travelled our seas for the last 100 million years. Turtles also have major cultural significance and tourism value. Sadly human activities have tipped the scales against the survival of these ancient mariners. Nearly all species of marine turtle are classified as Endangered with the hawsbill & Leatherhead being listed as critically endangered. Slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin and shells, marine turtles have suffered dramatically from poaching and over-exploitation. They also face habitat destruction and accidental capture in fishing gear. Climate change has also had an impact on the turtles, Warmer sea surface temperatures lead to the loss of important foraging grounds for marine turtles, while increasingly severe storms and sea level rise can destroy critical nesting beaches and damage nests. The increase in surface temperature also alters sand temperatures, which then affects the sex of hatchlings lessen the reproduction of female turtles.

Beluga Whales
B
elugas are also called white whales, and their unusual colour makes them one of the most familiar and easily distinguishable of all the whales in our ocean. Calves are born grey or even brown and only fade to white as they become sexually mature around five years of age. Their bulbous forehead, called a “melon”, is flexible and capable of changing shape. This allows them to make different facial expressions. Belugas generally live together in small groups known as pods and are very social animals and very vocal communicators that employ a diversified language of clicks, whistles, and clangs which gives the beluga its other name, “the canary of the sea.” They may sound like music or even nonsense to us, but to fellow belugas they convey important information. These whales are common in the Arctic Ocean’s coastal waters, though they are found in subarctic waters as well. Arctic belugas migrate southward in large herds when the sea freezes over. Animals trapped by Arctic ice often die, and they are prey for polar bears, killer whales, and for Arctic people. They are hunted by indigenous people of the north, and by commercial fisheries that brought some populations, such as those in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, to near collapse. Beluga feed on fish, crustaceans, and worms. The whale is related to the tusked “unicorn” whale known as the narwhal. The beluga is not related to the sturgeon of the same name, which has been heavily fished for its famous caviar. Whales, like the beluga, are at the top of the food chain and have an important role in the overall health of the marine environment. Beluga whales are also culturally important to indigenous communities in the Arctic. Like polar bears, the beluga depends on sea ice for its existence and can be directly impacted by climate change.
94
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
Thousands of years of evolution have prepared Arctic species like the polar bear, walrus and beluga for life on and around the sea ice. Because of climate change, the ice cover has been changing rapidly, in both extent and thickness, and shrinking far too quickly for these species to adapt. A beluga’s entire life is connected to sea ice, both as a place to feed and a place to take refuge. Slow swimming beluga whales rely on sea ice as a place to hide from predators like orcas, also vessels that support oil and gas development mean increased shipping in sensitive areas. Increased shipping means more noise that can mask communications for many Arctic marine species and it increases the potential for collisions with marine mammals, especially whales. It also brings more pollution and a greater possibility of oil or fuel spills.
Steller Sea Lions
S
tellers are the largest of all sea lions and they have an appetite to match. These giant pinnipeds hunt fish, squid, octopus and, rarely, smaller seals and are found off northern Pacific coasts from Japan to California. Steller sea lion breeding is one of nature’s great mass spectacles. When these giants thunder ashore, their favoured beaches, called rookeries, disappear under their numbers and sadly some young pups are sometimes crushed by the throng. Females begin to reproduce at about five years of age and typically have one pup per year. Sea lion mothers care for their young and recognize them by a keen sense of smell. Human greed has led to the decline of many seal populations. In the past, millions of seals were killed for their valuable meat, blubber, and pelts. Even today certain kinds of seals are hunted for the pups’ fluffy white coats. In some countries seals are still killed in large numbers because fishermen blame them for the decline in fish. Most Steller sea lion populations declined markedly in the 1980s and 1990s, even though the animals are protected. Scientists are unsure what factor or combination of factors is responsible for the decline but the Stellar seal has now sadly been added to the most endangered list of marine animals. Blue Whales
T
he blue whale does everything big! It is the largest animal on the planet, weighing as much as 200 tons (approximately 33 elephants) and has a heart the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. Its stomach can hold one ton of krill and to survive it needs to eat about four tons of krill each day. They are also the loudest animals on Earth and are even louder than a jet engine. Their calls reach 188 decibels, while a jet only reaches 140 decibels. Their low frequency whistle can be heard for hundreds of miles. Despite living in the water, whales breathe air. And like humans, they are warm-blooded mammals who nurse their young. A thick layer of fat called blubber insulates them from cold ocean waters. Whales are at the top of the food chain and have an important role in the overall health of the marine environment. During the 20th century, the blue whale was an important whaling target and even after it was protected and commercial whaling stopped in 1966, exploitation efforts by the former Soviet Union persisted. Like other large whales, blue whales are sadly threatened by environmental change including habitat loss and toxics. Blue whales can also be harmed by ship strikes and by becoming entangled in fishing gear. Although commercial whaling no longer represents a threat, climate change and its impact on krill (shrimp-like crustaceans), blue whales’ major prey, makes this cetacean particularly vulnerable.

otilas has changed the world of dressage sport and turned the world of dressage horse breeding on its head. With a sweep of competition victories and world-record scores since his 2007 debut, the Dutch-born Totilas has sold out dressage shows worldwide and brought a jolt of celebrity to the genteel world of dressage, a sport that has struggled to attract a following beyond that of the horsey set. This stallion has set record after record in quick-fire succession. He has broken the world record three times - in 2009 at the European Championship in the freestyle class, in London and at the CHIO Aachen 2010 in the Grand Prix Special. Within the space of only two years, this exceptional stallion has won all the titles there are to win. He has won two individual World Championship titles in Kentucky, he was European Champion at Windsor, World Cup winner in 2010 and he won the Dutch Championship twice. He also won team gold medals at the European Championship as well as the World Championship. SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE

The Magic of Moorland Totilas Totilas, also known from 2006 to 2011 as Moorlands Totilas, and nicknamed “Toto” is an 11-yearold Dutch Warmblood ebony stallion standing 17.1 hands (69 inches, 175 cm) high with rippling muscles and 11,800 Facebook fans, he is considered to be one of the most outstanding competitive dressage horses in the world. Moorlands Totilas was sired on the 25th May 2000 by, top dressage horse Gribaldi who was the 1995 champion of the stallion selections and 1996 champion of his stallion performance test and has been proclaimed a Keur stallion ( a stallion over the age of 7 years and of exceptional high quality) . In 1997 he was the winner of the four year old stallion competition in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and according to jury member Albert Voorn, he was “a horse that gives you a dream feeling as a rider” his, dam was Lominka, who came from bloodlines that produced excellent show jumping and dressage horses, many of whom were noted for their good temperament. At the age of five Moorlands Totilas was entered into his first major competition, he was ridden by Jiska van den Akker and exhibited at the 2005 World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in, Germany. There he distinguished himself as the best horse from the Netherlands, and was placed fourth in the final ranking of five year old dressage horses. It was in 2005, that his Dutch owners Jan K. Schuil and Anna Schuil-Visser contacted dressage rider Edward Gal and asked him to ride and compete with Moorlands Totilas…
This was the start of a wonderful partnership… Gal began working with Moorlands Totilas immediately and the pair entered their first competition in 2008, Gal and the team of people who worked with the horse understood that Toto (of which he lovely referred to him by) was “something special” and after their first Grand Prix (GP) competition, Gal stated, “He has an incredible amount of talent; it’s simply a pleasure to ride him.” In July 2009, Gal and Toto broke Anky van

In December 2009, at the fourth leg of the 2009–10 FEI World Cup Dressage series at Olympia in London, they extended their record in GP Freestyle to 92.30%, more than 10 points above the second-place finisher. They won that season’s FEI World Cup final with a win in GP Freestyle at home in the Netherlands, winning by more than 7 points with a score better than their first world record. In 2010, Moorlands Totilas stood for stud for a fee of €5,500, which was considered very high fee for a warmblood stallion. A total of 175 mares were approved for the stallion and in his first year he generated fees of nearly €1.4 million. On January 23rd 2011, Moorlands Totilas first foal was born to the 11 year old mare Sajiouti, producing a seal brown-collared filly named Moorlands Guinevere, in Utrecht, Netherlands. In 2010, rumours began to circulate that Moorlands Totilas had been sold to the former German show jumper and now sports breeder Paul Schockemöhle. The sale price was not disclosed but rumours circulated that the price was in the region off €9.5 - €15 million. At the World Equestrian Games, Edward Gal strongly denied that the horse was for sale, but his owners stated that, “we could no longer ignore the interest in the stallion. Gal was quoted as stating, “”I’m absolutely devastated...It’s like I’m struck by lightning.” With sale confirmed the news sent shockwaves thought the dressage community, with the Dutch national dressage team expressing intense disappointment that their Olympic hopes had been shattered with the horse being sold to an individual from the nation that is their closest rival, Germany. In March 2011, Schockemöhle changed Moorlands Totilas name to simply “Totilas” and selected Matthias Alexander Rath, a 26 year old German rider to be his new rider. There first year of competing came with great success. In five competitions four of them CDIs while the German Championships in Balve was a national

competition, Matthias and Totilas finished first on six occasions, third twice, and once fourth and fifth, the latter results at the European Championships in Rotterdam. The press criticised Matthias Rath with public opinion being that the pair had not yet achieved the level of performance that Totilas had when ridden by Edward Gal. Totilas also suffered an injury during the winter. However, Rath and Totilas were pointed to compete in the 2012 Olympics and where placed in the top three at the 2012 German Championships. However, shortly after, Rath developed a serious case of mononucleosis which caused him to withdraw from competition at CHIO Aachen in June and ultimately from the German Olympic team. Obviously disappointed Rath expressed hope that the pair would both be sound and healthy enough to compete in the 2016 Olympics, though by that time Totilas will be 16 years old. Following the withdrawal of the pair, Rath & Totilas moved to the Netherlands to work with the coach of the Dutch team and of gold medallist Anky van Grunsven, presumably to obtain training knowledge and work on the techniques that Totilas was familiar with whilst in the care of Gal. Sadly, allegations of abuse have circled around Rath & Schockemöhle and in 2012, the German branch of PETA filed a legal complaint against Rath and Schockemöhle, alleging that Totilas was being abused due to the use of rollkur ( a technique where the horse is asked to lower his head and round its neck as it works working “deep” so that the head is coming inward. In the extreme, the horse’s mouth touches the middle of his chest. Rollkur is not a quick movement lasting a few seconds, but is held for a length of time, through work at the walk, trot, and canter, including shortening and extension of the gaitsThis technique is banned by the world governing

body the International Federation for Equestrian Sports.), in his training and management that kept him confined in a box stall, isolated from other horses. Prosecutors have yet to determine if PETA’s allegations are sufficient to allege an actual violation of German law. Following this media speculation and after an eighth month hiatus Totilas & Rath entered the arena once again for the Hagen a.T.W. in Mai 2012 their tournament debut in front of the global public, the dressage fraternity was out en masse to see how they would fare and despite the pressure, rider Matthias Rath produced a superb test to win with a personal best score of 83.809%.
So what can we expect in 2013? This year Totilas will turn 13 years of age, he will not compete in stallion shows in the spring but plans are afoot to seek try and qualify for the World Cup Final in 2013, according to Paul Schockemöhle. Whatever the critics may say Totilas is magical and no other dressage horse has ever electrified spectators in the way that Totilas does or will…. He is just unique.

Wraith
The most powerful Rolls Royce ever...
R
olls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled the new 245,000 Wraith, the most powerful and dynamic car ever produced by the super-luxury marque. At its heart lie hallmark Rolls-Royce attributes of luxury, refinement and hand-craftsmanship, but the new model from the world’s pinnacle super-luxury marque also presents a unique character defined by power, style and drama, with just a hint of the noir. In profile, Wraith’s sweeping fastback design gives the car its unique character. Bold lines, tension in the panels and a raked rear screen evoke the image of a world class athlete poised in the starting blocks. Further expression of dynamic intent can be seen in Wraith’s deeply recessed grille, wide rear track and dramatic two-tone presentation. Coach doors open to reveal a sumptuous interior complete with softest Phantom-grade leathers and expanses of wood called Canadel Panelling. Named after the famous cove in the South of France where Sir Henry Royce and his design and engineering teams spent their winters, this contemporary and tactile finish sweeps through the interior, cosseting four occupants in a space bathed in light and warmth. The interior ambiance is complemented by Starlight Headliner, a bespoke feature available beyond Phantom family cars for the first time. 1,340 fibre optic lamps are hand-woven into the roof lining to give the impression of a glittering, starry night sky. Performance delivers on the promise of Wraith’s styling. Power delivery is effortless, but dramatic, thanks to a V12 engine married to 8-speed automatic ZF transmission. 624 bhp / 465kW is available to the driver while the 0-60 mph sprint is achieved in 4.4 seconds, compared with 563 bhp / 420kW and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds for Ghost.

From 1,500 rpm 800 Nm of torque is available (780 Nm for Ghost), while a wide rear track, shorter wheelbase and lower roof height further contribute to the most powerful, involving driving experience of any RollsRoyce in history. The car’s suspension has also been tuned to minimise body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering; while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive. However, Wraith is no GT bruiser. Agility improvements have been achieved with absolutely no compromise to the sensation of riding on a bed of air. Furthermore, the debut of Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT) technology takes the powertrain to a new level of effortless delivery, one that perfectly suits the Rolls-Royce brand. Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to see beyond what the driver sees; it anticipates his next move based on location and current driving style, then selects the most appropriate gear for the terrain ahead. Corners, motorway junctions and roundabouts are all anticipated in advance meaning Wraith is constantly poised to deliver on its promise of performance.
118
SUNSEARCH MAGAZINE
A more polished, effortless driving experience and even better response brings a new, more dynamic dimension to the famous Rolls-Royce trait, waftability. For over a century a RollsRoyce motor car has featured technologies designed to support occupants discreetly, delivering a peerless driving experience epitomised by the term ‘effortlessness’. In every Rolls-Royce these assist the driver when called upon, but are prepared to return without fuss to the background when no longer required. Advances in mechanical and electrical technology deliver systems like head-up display, adaptive headlights and Wraith’s keyless opening boot. But improvements in connectivity have taken the human-machine interface to a new level of sophistication, a suite of aids that could be likened to a contemporary on-board valet. Voice activation commands, for example, come with a one-touch call button located on the steering wheel. A destination no longer requires manual input from a navigation menu and route assistance begins immediately, on-screen and via audio guidance following a voice command such as “navigate to Piccadilly in London.”
Additional improvements in communications come in the design and functionality of the elegant Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. This allows navigation through on-screen functions using a touch pad that features
pinch and pull functionality to echo smart phone usage. Letters can also be ‘drawn’ onto the pad by hand rather than by scrolling through a series of available characters on-screen.

Boeing Offers New 737 Business Jet
By David Parker Brown
The Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) is one awesome machine. The airplane is a 737700 with the wings and landing gear from the 737-800. This provides the ability to carry up to nine fuel tanks and gives the aircraft additional range. The biz jet is capable of going up to 5,600 nautical miles at Mach 0.80. Yea, all the facts are interesting, but what interests me the most are the photos of this aircraft. The first version of the new BBJ was delivered to a private businessman from the US in early March after it went through interior modifications at Jet Tech, located in Spokane, WA. This BBJ is the second for the customer. “Our repeat customers aren’t limited to governments and charter companies, but include private individuals who love the comfort and capability of their BBJ so much, they buy another one,” said Captain Steve Taylor, BBJ president. This aircraft is configured to carry only 19 passengers. Knowing that the commercial version can be configured to carry up to 149 passengers, that means this BBJ has plenty of space for each person. According to Boeing, the aircraft, “has all the amenities of a home including a large personal stateroom with a kingsize bed, private lavatory and shower. It also has a smaller guest stateroom with divans that convert into beds enabling the BBJ to sleep up to 8 passengers.” In the well appointed kitchen, there is island, convection/microwave ovens, a refrigerator, wine cooler and trash compactor — not too shabby. The BBJ starts out at $57million, which is not cheap and will only get you the airplane. Most customers will spend a n a d d i t i o n a l $ 2 0 -2 5 m i l l i o n o n t h e V I P i n t e r i o r. Three true stars MICHELIN
There are many restaurants that claim to hold a Michelin star in Venice, however you cannot always be fooled by this, many restaurants have held Michelin stars in the past and have then lost then but continue to make sweeping statements that they hold one. Here we look at 3 current holders: 132

Ristorante Quadri
Piazza San Marco, Venice | Tel: +39 041 522 2105 | www.caffequadri.it Ristorante Quadri is one of Europe’s most famous historical restaurants situated above its equally well-known cafe on the ground floor, it opens out onto Piazza San Marco, where if you are lucky there might be an orchestra adding lustre to the experience. The restaurant is very ornate with walls covered with red silk, lit by sparkling Murano chandeliers. Now run by the Alajmo family - renowned restaurant owners from Padua - the Quadri is one of Venice‘s ‘gastronomic monuments‘. It is housed in one of the most photographed palazzi in the city and adorned with stucco decor, Murano glass and fine fabrics. Beautifully presented, creative cuisine made from the best quality ingredients.

New Entry for 2013 - Venissa Ristorante Ostello Fondamenta Santa Caterina | Venice | Tel: +39 041 527 2281 | www.venissa.it A super-chic gastro retreat on Mazzorbo Island near Venice. This chic restaurant-with-rooms serves some of the most exciting food in Italy, and is currently out dazzling Venice’s canals, treasures and basilicas for foodies in the know. Headed up by chef Paola Budel (who has studied under Michel Roux and worked in top restaurants in London, Tokyo and Monaco), the restaurant has a very unusual menu, making the most of creatures from the Venice lagoon - soft-shelled crabs, baby squid and eel alongside traditional Italian favourites remade and updated. It is set in an old manor house on Mazzorbo Island, attached by a causeway to Burano Island with its candy-coloured houses, just 40 minutes by vaporetto from the city. Surrounded by 2 hectares of vineyard and gardens, the setting is peaceful, and there are only 6 rooms, which add to the exclusive, intimate feel. The glass, metal and wood restaurant space gleams incongruously at night over the rows of grapes in the Venissa vineyard. Inside, all is dedication to a memorable culinary experience. Outside, the wooden deck is a marvellous place from which to observe the changing colours as the sun sets over the lagoon.

Osteria da Fiore
Sestiere San Polo, Venice | Tel: +39 041 721308 | www.dafiore.net The understated atmosphere, simple decor, and quiet elegance featured alongside Da Fiore’s modern take on traditional Venetian cuisine certainly merit its international reputation. With such beautifully prepared cuisine, you would expect the kitchen to be manned by a chef with a household name; however the kitchen is headed by none other than owner Maurizio Montin’s wife, Mara, who learned to cook from her grandmother. The other surprise is that while this restaurant is in an upper price category, it is hardly among the priciest in Venice. It offers several moderately priced (€50), three-course, prix fixe menus, which brings it very much into line with most of the more elegant choices in town. The menu is constantly changing, but generally frito misto or Da Fiore’s tender, aromatic version of seppie in nero, cuttlefish in black sauce, is almost always available. Reservations, perhaps made a few days in advance in high season, are essential for dinner, but you can try just dropping in for lunch.

Let’s Talk About...
Keeping your cool at Tanino! Where do we start? Tanino is a restaurant that has a funky yet cool ambiance, great food and wonderful staff. Simply put Tanino has it all… Everything about this restaurant is eclectic and a delight to the senses from the interior design to the fusion menu. Upon entering Tanino, I immediately felt like I had been whisked off to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland mad hatter tea party, the vibrant colours matched with the assortment of oversized chairs, framed mirrors and trinkets instantly lifted my mood and brought a smile to my face. A lot of thought has gone into the design of Tanino, with every corner filled to create a different atmosphere from a sophisticated
restaurant, to New York style cocktail bar, to a friendly relaxed chill out comfy zone which definitely encourages one to kick back and relax. The restaurant also offers a fabulous terrace for one to enjoy during the warmer evenings of the summer months, plus there is also a host of live music evenings. Unlike most other restaurant along the coast the thing that struck me most about Tanino was the mix of people dining and relaxing together with young couples cozying up together to families and groups of friends all enjoying an evening out. The extensive menu offers international cuisine from around the world with home-made pastas to steaks along with a gastronomic fusion of stir fry’s and Indian concepts, sadly
during my visit I did not get the opportunity to eat but every dish that passed me by was impeccably presented and the portions were of a very generous size. You can clearly see that the kitchen team take pride in the dishes they create.. Although, I was unable to enjoy the fabulous food I did treat myself to a cocktail or two (hic!) which were expertly prepared and tasted just delightful. It is worth noting that if you are planning to dine at Tanino booking is highly recommended with breakfast, lunch and dinner served daily. Free Wi-Fi for customers. Happy hour between 17:00 - 19:30

If it’s feria time it must be sherry time By Xavier Peddington

It’s
that time of year again. You are walking along the street and suddenly come across groups of people on horses, in typical Andalucian costume, and girls in flouncing polkadot dresses dancing to hand clapping. Yes, the Spanish feria season is in full swing, having started with the classic Seville Feria in April, followed by local ferias that keep you awake into the small hours and go on all through the summer. Wherever you live, your feria experience will be inimitable. In some towns and villages the local feria, always celebrating the patron saint, may only last an extended weekend, while at the other extreme can be more than a week long. Most municipalities have their dedicated feria ground, used just once a year for this event, and in others the main square is the focus of all the fun. How do you explain to someone who has never experienced an Andalucia town or village fair what it consists of? Days - and nights - of drinking, eating, dancing, with everyone from toddlers to octogenarians enjoying themselves as if there were no tomorrow. There is just no equivalent to the almost 24/7 celebration where vino fino, rebujito, ham, cheese, all sorts of cooked food, paellas, with of course the distinctive sevillanas and rumbas that are danced until dawn. One thing is certain. If you enter into the spirit of the fair you will enjoy yourself, and possibly even more so if you partake of that typical feria drink, fino sherry. No-one has to the best of my knowledge explained exactly why drinking sherry is synonymous with the enjoyment of Spanish ferias, but it unquestionably is. Without any
exaggeration hundreds of thousands of bottles get drunk in every Andalucian fair, whether it be the city fairs like Córdoba, Granada, Málaga, the already-mentioned Seville, or the annual town celebrations in places like Marbella, Fuengirola,

and to have an unusual taste. Indeed, it is very low on sugar and the tang is down to it being a wine that is blended (there is no such thing as a vintage sherry) and will always contain base wines of considerable age. Many people prefer the less dry varieties A bottle like amontillados and olorosos, A curiosity is that all feria sherry is of fino, once which are darker in colour and have drunk in half bottles. This actually opened, will more body - and more alcohol. An used to be the general custom in go off between old oloroso, for example, can have Spain, since, as long-dead wine up to 20º. When you visit a sherry expert André Simon went on luncheon and bodega you will be served this record as saying, “A bottle of fino, dinner variety first before moving to a fino once opened, will go off between session - that can last a long time - and luncheon and dinner.” At that time you certainly could not stay upright if you sherry was not intentionally stabilised to the same degree as currently, so one just opened drank the same amount of these heavier wines. the bottle and threw the cork away; (please note, cork, not the metal caps many of them use now). So how about the old battle: fino versus manzanilla? Traditionally, and many years ago, it I truly do not know many foreigners who like was definitely not done to drink manzanilla almost fino sherry. They usually consider it to be too dry anywhere outside Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where Estepona, El Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Antequera, Torre del Mar, etc, right down to the little village affairs, of Ojén, Coín, Benahavis, Istán... it comes from. Never properly marketed, always the poor cousin of proud Jerez’s fino, cheaper and generally a tad less refined, why drink it at all? However with diet-conscious Spaniards turning more and more to ‘light’ versions of everything in sight, someone in Sanlúcar had the bright idea of producing a ‘light’ sherry, this eventually materialising in a manzanilla with less alcohol. And I suppose if you are drinking sherry at the feria from midnight until six in the morning, this can be an advantage. It caught on, and before you could say Tio Pepe or La Ina, the manzanilla brands of La Guita, La Gitana, Solear and others had swept the board. But as usual in such cases the gap subsequently narrowed. The Jerezanos reduced the alcohol content in fino, and the price of the best manzanillas climbed to the same as that of fino. So back to square one. However a dyed-in-the-wool Jerezano will never order a copa of manzanilla, at a feria or anywhere

else. Nevertheless many aficionados maintain that being made in a coastal town you can taste the sea in it. As Sanlúcar has become more built up, local lore maintains that the bodegas on the lower ground facing the ocean no longer receive the sea breezes, and their wine has changed in character, while the bodegas on the higher level (of which Barbadillo is the largest), still preserve this unusual and attractive characteristic. Another story, again true, is that if you take a barrel of manzanilla to Jerez, inland, and viceversa, the manzanilla will become fino and the fino will become manzanilla. Which is why every large Jerez producer has a maturing warehouse in Sanlúcar. Miracles of that wonderful living creature which is wine. So, if we are going off to the feria, which brands do we order? Well, as at any time, the betterknown brands are usually the safest. Solear, from Barbadillo (who also produce the ubiquitous bestselling white table wine, Castillo de San Diego) is a top-ranker. La Goya, from Delgado Zuleta, is termed a manzanilla pasada (or, in the modern idiom, manzanilla fina) and is excellent, although not easy to find. Argüeso is one of the oldest Sanlúcar bodegas, and their wine is superb, but harder to get hold of outside the immediate area. La Guita, perhaps the best-known manzanilla of them all, now belongs to the Estevez Group, and is the most consumed wine in many local ferias starting with Seville. It sells all it can produce with hardly any going for export.

There is no mystery about the best finos, starting with the classic Domecq La Ina (now owned by Lustau, the bodega with the widest range of sherries in the area) followed by Tio Pepe, Inocente and Tio Mateo. There used to be dozens of small sherry houses each with their own excellent brand, but these days the business is concentrated into a half dozen major firms. Regrettably sherry sales figures in Spain have been heading south for years, and there was at one time real concern about the future. In recent years practically the only time sherry was traditionally drunk was, and still is, at Andalucian ferias, and although the quantities are huge, they cannot support the capital-intensive production methods necessary for the wine. Most bodegas have vast stocks and have to see an annual rotation. Otherwise the traditional solera system that blends wine from different years and makes it so special and unique cannot be maintained as it needs to be. Fortunately there are now signs that sales are picking up again, above all in overseas markets. Britain is showing a renewed interest in the stuff and even young people have started drinking it. But the biggest boost is from celebrity chefs who are using it increasingly in signature dishes, and two award-winning London restaurants, Moro and Fino, offer tasting menus to combine with different varieties of sherry. The increase in popularity of tapa bars has helped, and what is happening in Britain is being replicated in the USA. Oriental eateries are also promoting sherry. As an accompaniment to most eastern cuisine it has no rival, and even with Indian food can stand up for itself much better than ordinary wine can - although beer and cava will always be best. Anyway ten years ago Marks & Spencer’s sherry range consisted of five wines and it now has 12, with sales up 18%.
