Sticking to a tight budget and restricted access to bring in all the materials. The clients wanted to achieve a more open plan effect to enjoy the most beautiful sea view and golf course from the kitchen, living room and even the entrance. We achieved this by knocking down dividing walls and fitting large bifold windows and doors. The living room window opens up to expose 5m of breathtaking views and brightens the whole living space. With the creative ideas of our client, we laid beautiful wooden flooring which we imported from Belgium, original tiles in the entrance and fitted some very smart bathrooms.

OVE over McMansion… the micro home is now the coolest kid in town . Gone are the days of giant, mass-produced eyesores; today’s trendy home is mini and mobile. Miniature homes have become such a phenomenon they are actually fuelling a tiny house movement across the world. So why are micro homes becoming so popular? Cost, for one, is a big selling point. Building a tiny home usually stays within the €20K to €40K price range and often costs even less for those interested in building parts of it themselves.

TIN Y HOMES FOR ECO ADVENTURERS Rental income opportunities aside, most tiny home owners buy them to live in. It gives them access to a lifestyle that just isn’t possible in a traditional house. For adventurous types, attach your tiny home to your vehicle and use it to travel the country. Another big draw of living in a miniature house is a reduced environmental impact. Tiny homes are incredibly efficient, needing little water or electricity; they also cost less to maintain, renovate and furnish. Moreover, they tend to be built with environmentfriendly materials. A number of homeowners choose to go off-the-grid altogether, installing solar panels to their roof. Since the average micro home only has six light bulbs, creating enough electricity is easy. Other eco-friendly options include green rooftops, grey water recycling, even windpowered generators. Living in such a small space means you consume less and create a smaller carbon footprint – but the downside composting toilets can take some getting used to.

LIVE SMALL AND BE HAPPY The rise of the MICRO HOME the next big thing TINY HOME, BIG PROFIT Timing is another big factor in the micro home’s rise in popularity. The number of tiny homes grew in leaps and bounds shortly after the last real estate crash, when millions of people simply couldn’t afford to keep and maintain their homes so they simply had to walk away. Not willing to give up the idea of homeownership, some embraced the tiny house. Millennials, who saw the aftereffects of the housing crash, are also attracted to these unconventional dwellings. Living full-time in a tiny house isn’t for everyone and some traditional homeowners use a micro house in addition to their own home. Some use it for guest quarters, others use it for travel. If not needed for personal use, micro homes can be rented out on Airbnb and can bring in additional income.

BACK TO BASICS For most micro home owners, the biggest draw was the concept of living simply. With such a small space to live in, homeowners are forced to pare down their belongings to the essentials. There’s no room for collections of trinkets, tons of clothes or fancy kitchen appliances. It may seem bare-bone and deprived to the craft fair regular or hoarder, but it can be quite liberating. No need to accumulate stuff, clean stuff or upgrade stuff… there’s just no room for stuff. What surprises many micro home dwellers is the shift in perspective it creates. They no longer need to pay for expensive housing or see the point of spending on the latest i-gadgets or the newest status symbol. Before long, they are asking themselves why they work so hard! Cutting costs and needing less gives them more freedom. Tiny home owners get to save more of their hard-earned cash, cut back on their work hours, or even retire early from their more traditional careers. It also means no more keeping up with the Joneses. Unless, of course, the Joneses are also trekking across the country in their micro home.
