ORE than 380 regional and 70 state-run feminist organisations took to the capital in what was Madrid’s first state-wide march calling for an end to violence and discrimination against women, which protesters called “sexist terrorism”. Figures realised show that since 1995 more than 1,390 women have been murdered across Spain by male attackers with 84 murder cases alone this year but these figures are ‘just the tip of the iceberg’ as government statistics do not reflect the true magnitude of the situation. About 120,000 women report incidents of domestic abuse to the Spanish authorities every year, last year, more than 19,000 people were put on trial for violence against women and 14,000 of them were convicted. The Director of Women Foundation, Marisa Soleto, said the rally was aimed at putting pressure on Spanish authorities to do more to protect women and ensure gender equality in the southern European country.

Vatican arrests two in new leak scandal
T
HE two, Monseñor Lucio Ángel Vallejo Balda (right) who is associated with the strict Catholic Movement Opus Dei and Francesca Chaouqui were detained over the weekend following an investigation into the alleged leak of confidential documents. Both were members of a newly formed commission created by Pope Francis to monitor and review the church’s finances and economic state. The arrest follows an investigation by Vatican police which has spanned several months ahead of two books due to be published reportedly containing new revelations of past scandals at the Vatican. “
BETRAYAL As for the books announced for publication in the next few days, let it be clearly stated at this time, as in the past, that such actions are a serious betrayal of trust granted by the Pope and with regard to the authors, an operation intended to take advantage of a grave offence, the unlawful delivery of confidential documents. The legal implications and possible
A Spanish priest and an Italian PR expert have been arrested for allegedly stealing confidential ‘Holy See’ documents related to the Catholic Church’s finances and using them within two new books to go on sale next week penalties currently being studied by the Office of the Promoter of Justice with a view to possible further measures involving international cooperation. Publications of this kind do not contribute in any way to establish clarity and truth, but rather to create confusion and partial and tendentious interpretations. We must certainly avoid the mistake of thinking that this is a way to help the mission of the Pope” the Vatican said in the statement released. Chaouqui has since been released by Vatican prosecutor Roberto Zannotti because she has not been deemed a flight risk aad has agreed to cooperate with investigators, Vallejo Balda remains in custody.
Jeremy Clarkson could face jail J as Argentina case is re-opened
EREMY Clarkson could face up to THREE years in prison after an Argentina court re-opened the case into the infamous Top Gear Falklands number plate. Last year, while filming a Top Gear Christmas special Clarkson and his crew had to flee Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires with the help of a police escort after inciting a riot following their decision to drive a red Porsche along a 1,400 mile road trip with a number plate HP982 FKL displayed.
STONED Nearly 30 other members of the film crew were stoned as they headed for Chile by road and had to abandon Clarkson’s Porsche and the other two cars by the side of the road. At the time Judge Maria Cristina Barrionuevo rubbished claims that the use of the plate H982 FKL on Clarkson’s infamous Porsche was an “unfortunate coincidence.” However, following an appeal from Falkland’s war veteran, Osvaldo Hillar and pressure from the state prosecution Ms Barrionuevo has been ordered to re-open the case. The specific charges are of “falsifying, altering or suppressing the number of a legally registered object” which under article 289 of the Argentinian Penal Code carries a prison sentence of between six months and three years. The three presenters will now be called to give evidence in Argentina.

FRANCE TO ALLOW GAY MEN TO GIVE BLOOD – AS LIFETIME BAN IS LIFTED L AST week France announced that it will lift the lifetime ban on blood donations from gay and bisexual men joining a growing list of other countries around the world who have already loosened the restrictions such as the UK. “Giving one’s blood is an act of generosity and of civic responsibility that cannot be conditioned by sexual orientation,” the health minister, Marisol Touraine” announced in Paris “While respecting the absolute security of patients, it is a taboo, a discrimination that is being lifted today.” Ms Touraine said the lifting of the ban, a presidential campaign pledge by François Hollande, will be introduced “in stages” starting in spring next year.
During the early 1980s the Aids epidemic had exploded onto the scene, it was believed at the time that the gay community was the main protagonists of this disease and because of this gay men were given a lifetime ban and forbidden to donate blood
QUARANTINE Initially, “total blood” donations will only be open to men who have not been sexually active with other men for 12 months, those have had only one partner for the preceding four months, or who have not been sexually active, will be able to donate blood plasma. There donations will be placed into quarantine for two and half months to ensure there are no foreign bodies present. In 2011, the UK relaxed there laws on the blood ban and introduced guidelines of a 12-month deferral period but following a plea from the NHS in June for new donors, there have been calls to further relax the rules. Figures released warned that numbers had plunged 40 per cent in ten years. Other countries like the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Australia, Japan & the United States have also lifted the ban, in Italy and Spain, donors are screened regardless of their sexual orientation, and deferrals are made case by case but in Austria, Belgium and Germany the lifetime bans still remains
European Union asks member states to drop criminal charges against Edward Snowden HE was classed as the most wanted man in America responsible for the biggest intelligence breach in recent US history and since 2013 he has been on the run living in exile in Moscow, Russia. Snowden’s disclosure of classified documents about the National Security Agency’s (NSA) illegal global electronic surveillance programs which spied on foreign leaders, nongovernmental organizations, and the United Nations caused international mayhem - the German government summoned the US ambassador after reports that the NSA had eavesdropped on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone there
were also claims that EU offices were bugged. But after nearly two years on the run, The European Union has taken pity and last week it called for its member countries to grant the whistle-blower and “defender of human rights” asylum and drop any criminal charges against him with a vote in favour of 285-281. However it remains unclear how in practise this will work - if any countries within the 28-member EU would be willing to grant Snowden protection and refuse to extradite Snowden to the U.S it could spark an international incident. The United States has extradition treaties with all European nations.

NHS HAS ONE OF THE WORST HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD I N 1948 the NHS was born, it was born out of a longheld ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth and is a principle, it was once the envy of the world however a damming report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), claims the UK has one of the worst healthcare systems in the developed world with an outstandingly poor record of preventing ill health. It claims hospitals are now so short-staffed and underequipped that people are also dying needlessly because of a chronic lack of investment. Comparing the quality of healthcare across 34 countries the report shows that the UK has fewer doctors and nurses than average, with 2.8 per 1,000 populations, compared to the OECD average of 3.3. The average number of nurses – at 8.2 per 1,000 populations compares with an OECD average of 9.1. Countries with more doctors and nurses include Greece, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Israel and Australia. The report called for “urgent attention” to combat high rates of smoking, harmful alcohol consumption and obesity, which

are all above the OECD average. Mark Pearson (pictured above left), OECD Deputy Director of Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, said NHS performance was “middling to bad” on a range of measures. He said the UK was doing “outstandingly poorly” on preventing ill health by tackling issues such as obesity. He blamed thanks to the low level of investment which is reflected in the “somewhat mediocre performance across the board - from relatively low staffing levels, to high rates of avoidable admissions for asthma and lung disease”. 2009 – 2013 NHS funding had remained static with the OECD report stating that the UK was spending “considerably less” than many OECD countries and that “this is reflected in the results because you get what you pay for”. Nigel Edwards (pictured right), Chief Executive of the think tank the Nuffield Trust, who helped launch the report said to match the number of doctors required by the OECD report the NHS would have to hire 47,700 more nurses and 26,500 more doctors. This would cost the NHS another £5bn a year. A Department of Health spokesperson said: “We have invested £10 billion into the NHS to fund its future development and aim to make it the safest healthcare system in the world. We know there are areas where the NHS can improve and this is why we have prioritised investment for the frontline areas. Since May we introduced more than 21,400 extra clinical staff, including 10,500 additional doctors and more than 7,600 additional nurses on our wards since May 2010.

Queen Elizabeth II faces legal action over the Koh-I-Noor Diamond T
HE 105 carat Koh-i-nor Diamond was once regarded as the world’s largestknown diamond. It is worth a reported £100m and forms part of the Britain’s crown jewels sitting with the Coronation Crown but a lobby group of Indian businessmen and actors have mounted a legal challenge demanding that Queen Elizabeth II return the diamond back to India. The group, which calls itself the “Mountain of Light” after the translation of the stone’s
name, claim that the diamond was stolen from India and are demanding that the queen returns it to its rightful owners. The stone, believed to have originated in the Golconda mines in central Southern India over 700 years ago, has been passed down from one ruling dynasty to another in India before the British Empire took it as part of the Treaty of Lahore, when it took control of the Punjab, in 1849. The Marquess of Dalhousie, the British gov-
ernor-general, arranged for it to be presented to Queen Victoria as spoils of war but was initially unimpressed by the diamond claiming “the Koh-i-Noor is badly cut, it is rose-cut, not-brilliant, and of course won’t sparkle like the latter.” The diamond was then mounted into Victoria’s crown among 2,000 other diamonds. Since then it has passed to Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and then to the late Queen Mother in 1937, were it was last set in a Maltese Cross.
REQUEST Indian and Pakistani authorities have long demanded the diamond’s return the first request came as soon as independence was granted in 1947, requesting the diamond’s return. A second request followed in 1953, the year
of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Then, in 1976, Pakistan joined in the argument, Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto wrote to the British prime minister Jim Callaghan who refused a request to hand it back, writing: ‘I need not remind you of the various hands through which the stone has passed over the past two centuries, nor that explicit provision for its transfer to the British Crown was made in the peace treaty with the Maharajah of Lahore which concluded the war of 1849. I could not advise Her Majesty the Queen that it should be surrendered.’ In 2010 on a visit to India David Cameron flatly refused to return the diamond citing that by returning artefacts to their country of origins would empty the British Museums he also noted that the true provenance of the diamond was in dispute as both India & Pakistan have made claim to it.

La Estrella - the abandoned village with two unlikely residents Photo: Guardia Civil
STELLAR FALL-OUT
F
OR nearly half a century Martin and Sinforosa Colomer have been the only residents of La Estrella an abandon village located nr Valencia, their closest neighbours are located at least 25 kilometres away. The small village was once bustling with life with 200 hundred inhabitants but, during the Spanish Civil War, people fled the country to the cities and slowly but surely the village began to die. Legend has it that the village was constructed exclusively for the mistresses of wealthy land owners and that a torrential storm in 1883 caused unimaginable damage killing nearly half the inhabitants and destroying homes along the way. From here emerges the unlikely story of Juan Martin and Sinforosa Colomer, now aged 79 and 82 respectively, the couple refuse to abandon what they have always called home. Sinforosa grew up in the village and is the home she has ever known. The couple raised their only daughter there but she tragically died of an embolism at the age of 12. Today the couple live without any modern essentials - they have no phone, no television, no electricity and no water. The village itself is not what one would expect from an aban-
doned village, the buildings are extremely well built and a magnificent church with a blue-tiled copula sits beautifully in the square. Juan Martin spends his day tending to his plants and animals and while the couple may be bereft of human company, the views and tranquil lifestyle surely make up for it. The story of Juan Martin and Sinforosa Colomer, the last two inhabitants of La Estrella, was recently covered in a short video recently posted on Aeon.co.
BROTHERS Francisco and Juan Espín del Amo, two shepherds from the Murica region, were tending their flocks earlier this week when they found an object that resulted in their entire goat farm being quarantined by government investigators. The mysterious black orb that the brothers concluded “must have fallen from the sky,” led the Guardia Civil to immediately activate its NRBQ protocol, for nuclear, radiological, bacterial or chemical threats and deployed experts heavily protected in bright green hazard suits. The experts conducted tests around the object, which was later confirmed to have come from space, but there were no raised radiation levels detected. Several different explanations have been given for the UFOs origin. Guardia Civil explosive experts believe it is possibly an auxiliary fuel tank from a rocket whilst other officers have agreed it could have come from a rocket or a satellite. Juan and Francisco’s cousin did some research of his own online and discovered that the mysterious object appeared to be part of a space station. “The sphere has all the signs of being a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV), possibly from a space station,” he said. “These objects are made of a material that is so resistant it survives intact even after re-entering the earth’s atmosphere,” he added. Murcia local government have invited anyone who claims to own the orb to come forward.

Crew discovered dead in a cabin of crashed Spanish military helicopter
Spain’s defence ministry have confirmed that the sunken cabin of a Spanish military helicopter that crashed in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa with three crew members on board has been found with the crews bodies found inside. The cabin was lifted from the seabed last Thursday and puts an end to speculation of the three missing men Jose Morales Rodriguez, Saul Lopez Quesada and Jhonander Ojeda. The helicopter went down on October 22, about 280 nautical miles (520 km) from its destination on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, off the coast of Morocco. The helicop-
ter had set off from Mauritania after refuelling following two weeks of military exercises in Senegal. Spain’s defence ministry said at the time that Morocco had said that the crew members had been rescued by a fishing vessel, which was taking them to Dakhla, a town in Moroccan-controlled Western Sahara. But the following day Spanish Defence Minister Pedro Morenes said the information provided by the Moroccan authorities turned out to be wrong and rescuers continued their search. The ministry has not said what may have caused the helicopter to go down.

SPAIN’S FAVOURITE PORK PRODUCTS CLASSED AS A POTENTIAL CAUSE OF CANCER
T
HERE is nothing more Spanish than jamón serrano. It is classed as a national treasure and throughout Spain’s delicatessens, bars and restaurants, the leg and shoulder joints hang prominently as symbol sof the healthy Mediterranean diet. So it was with deep shock that the World Health Organization (WHO) has now deemed the delicacy as being as dangerous to our health as tobacco and alcohol. Last week the World Health Organisation (WHO) made headlines when it published a list of potential causes of cancer with processed meats (including bacon, jamón serrano, chorizo, sausages and other pork products) listed in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos. The report revealed that as little as two slices of bacon or a thinly sliced piece of jamón, can increase the risk of colorectal (bowel) cancer by 18% However for some the report is misleading, because although these processed meat are now listed in the same category as cigarettes and alcohol for causing cancer, WHO experts claim it does not mean that they are equally dangerous. “For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,” Dr Kurt Straif from the WHO said in a statement. Whilst most meat eaters dismissed this claim as ‘the latest fad’ the news could have serious repercussions for the Spanish jamón industry. It produces around 33 million cured ham legs annually with an estimated economic value of more than €1.5 billion, according to a 2014 report from the Spanish Jamón Serrano Foundation (FJSE) .

Spain approves controversial solar power tax Spain opens criminal probe against Volkswagen following diesel emissions scandal A Spanish high court has begun proceedings against German automaker Volkswagen over an ongoing emissions scandal that allegedly affects 11 million cars worldwide. The national court said in a press release that it had opened a preliminary investigation into the possible fraud over pollution-cheating software which was installed into some of its diesel engines. The cheating software was discovered in a University of West Virginia lab in September after a group of researchers tested several Volkswagen diesel engines. The scientists found the cars’ actual emissions were as much as 40 times the legal limit they had been displaying during road tests. It is believed that in Spain there are over 700,000 cars affected within this device. The case brought by Spanish prosecutors alleges two crimes: The first that the high emissions violate environmental protection laws in Spain and the second was that the company took advantage of federal subsidies for clean cars that were not actually clean, thereby committing fraud. Volkswagen must now send a representative from the company to the Spanish court to face charges before Nov. 10, Reuters reported.
The solar energy industry in Spain is about to take a significant hit, as the government implements new taxes on solar generation facilities
A NEW tax on the self-supply of electricity generated by privately owned solar panels has been approved by Spanish Ministers. Signed on the 9th October, the decree will be introduced in the next six months, according to a statement from the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Tourism. It will apply to solar power systems with a capacity of over 10 kilowatts. While yet to be fully announced, it has been indicated that separate tax regulations will be implemented based on
the potential production capacity of the installation, with different tiers for panels producing less than 10kW, those producing between 10kW and 100kW, and large-scale installations with potential capacity of 100kW.
UNPOPULAR The tax is unpopular with both the public and environmental groups with it already being dubbed the “sun tax.” However the Ministry said the tax is intended to ensure that solar panel users
contribute to the cost of maintaining the country’s electrical grid, as they use it as a backup supply Installations with a potential power output of between 10kW and 100kW will also be barred from selling electricity, and will be required to donate any excess supply of power to the national grid without compensation. Any large-scale facility with a potential production of over 100kW will need to be registered prior to selling any electricity.
Severe storm causes damage and death across the province THE Costal del Sol suffered its worst storm in over two decades when the region was inundated with a storm front with many observers noting it was like ‘sheets of water falling from the sky’. Waves battered the coast with the Coastal Authority recording over 65 incidents. Across Andalucia the 112 Andalucía Emergencies System was inundated with calls with over 300 incidents registered. In the Malaga province 40 people had to be rescued by fireman for fear of drowning. During the early hours of Tuesday morning the river Sio in Madrid broke its banks causing flooding into the neighbouring nursing home. The ground floor became engulfed with water killing four residents. The majority of the incidents reported were in the western side of the coast, between Estepona, Manilva, Casares, Marbella and Ronda.

FLU CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY IN ANDALUCÍA 60% of the people living in Andalucía and aged over 65 last year had a flu vaccine, while the national average is 56.2%
T
HIS month the Andalucía Flu Vaccine program got underway, it will last for several months until the arrival of spring. According to the National Network of Epidemiological Vigilance, the flu activity in Spain last year between 2014/2015 was moderate and associated with a majority infection of the Group A virus (H3N2), with an increasing contribution from the B virus. The number of casualties was classed as normal, according to the Ministry for Health, reaching a peak during the last week of January to February 1, with 348 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The under 15’s were the most affected age. Last season 56.2% of the Spanish population aged over 65 were vaccinated, a total number of 4,962,261 vaccinations in this age group. La Rioja was the region to see the highest level at 66.4%, while the lowest was Baleares with 45% and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The fundamental health precautions in combating flu are basic, such as putting your hand up to your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Also old handkerchiefs must never be reused. The flu is a passing illness which reaches its maximum incidence in autumn and winter. The average incubation period is 48 hours, with a variation between one and seven days.
It is air-transmitted by coughing and sneezing. Main symptoms are fever up to 39ºC, cold chills, headaches, muscular pain, sneezing and persistent coughing, mucus, tears and slight laryngitis. Flu symptoms can be confused with other respiratory pathologies, such as common catarrh, when it is advisable to get first aid attention or see a paediatrician. This is self-limiting illness for between five to seven days, although some of the symptoms can often last between two and three weeks.
EU withdraws financial support for Spanish bullfighting THE European Parliament has votes to stop EU agricultural subsidies being used to support bullfighting in yet another blow to this traditional activity Animal rights campaigners are celebrating after the European Parliament voted to cut subsidies to farms raising cattle for bullfighting. MEPs in Strasburg overwhelming approved an amendment to the budget in 2016 voting 438 against, 199 for with 50 abstaining that in no uncertain terms should EU money be used to fund “lethal bullfighting activities”. The loss of the EU subsidies worth approx. around €150 million a year is a severe blow to the industry, which is already facing dwindling audience numbers and proposed bans in several areas of Spain. Animal rights organisation PETA said “This is a massive decision and could be the final nail in the coffin for Spain’s already struggling bullfighting industry”.
Transgender model misses out on becoming Miss World Spain but declares ‘I’m already a queen!’ WHEN Angela Ponce won the Miss World Cadiz title last August, no one batted an eyelid - after all she was just a beautiful 23 year old local girl with a lovely figure, except that SHE was actually born a HE. Angela has now made history, although sadly she didn’t win the international competition, she is the first transgender women to compete in Spain’s Miss World beauty pageant. The glitzy event held in Estepona, was won by Mireia Lalaguna, Miss Barcelona, but Ms Ponce said: “As far as I’m concerned I’m a winner. I have the regional crown on my head and I will keep fighting to make us seen, to make us heard and to demonstrate that I am already a queen with my own crown. My battle continues.” Ms Ponce said she knew she was “different” from an early age. She added: “When my parents asked me what toy I wanted, I went straight for the Barbies.” After years of hormone therapy, she had the final operation of her transition in 2014. She is a supporter of the Daniela Foundation, which raises awareness of transgender issues.

MARBELLA CHOSEN AS THE LOCATION FOR NEW SPY DRAMA
L
EADING TV production company Wanda Halcyon Television of Europe have announced that their latest political thriller “Operating Naked – A Black-Bag Job,” by espionage author Jon Augustine will be filmed in Marbella, Toronto and Washington DC. This edge-of-your-seat drama about US operatives during the controversial impeachment hearings from 1997-1999, is based on the author’s clandestine days as a Special Operations officer in the US Army Intelligence Support Activity (USAISA), and is a fictional account of real life events, many of which oc-
curred in Marbella. The show’s author, Jon Augustine, whose credits include the US Television hit show “Burn Notice” (2007-2013), is a former spy and USAISA officer. This top-secret Special Operations Unit collects actionable intelligence for counter-terrorist operations and their operatives are legendary for their selfreliance and specialized skill-set. “Black-bag jobs” are clandestine operations to obtain information – sometimes illegally, but always highly dangerous. A critical part of the story arc takes place in Marbella,
where the main protagonist interacts with members of Syrian Intelligence prior to the world trade terrorist attack. Marbella acts as a modern day “Casablanca” for many factions of spies in this riveting espionage thriller. Pat Andrew, Showrunner for Wanda Halcyon explains; “This is an exciting and relevant espionage story of political intrigue, subterfuge and murder, all taking place during the US impeachment hearings held in the 1990s, which gives the viewer an insiders’ look at espionage and political intrigue on a global scale.” Marbella will be the base not only for much
of the action, but also for the production, creating jobs and offering exciting opportunities for Marbella residents. The production team are currently casting for lead roles and location scouting. Casting for supporting parts will take place in November. Wanda Halcyon Television of Europe, which is majority owned by Wanda Shanghai Inc, acquired the rights to produce the television series for worldwide distribution in 2014 and have expressed their excitement about living and working in the beautiful town of Marbella.
Pink Panthers jewel thieves detained SPANISH police have detained two members of the notorious Pink Panthers gang of jewel thieves and recovered more than 1 million euros in stolen goods. The items believed to be stolen from a jewellery shop in Fuerteventura were recovered but the police have declined to give any further information. The Pink Panthers group is behind armed robberies targeting high-end jewellery stores in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States. This loosely-aligned network of criminals is believed to have carried out robberies worth in excess of €334 million since 1999. Hundreds of suspects are linked to more than 383 robberies/aggravated thefts in 35 countries.
DARING The Pink Panthers’ methods are daring and quick. A case that made headlines in 2007 saw gang members drive two cars into a shopping mall in Dubai and through the window of a jewellery store. The robbery took less than one minute and the gang made away with jewellery worth an estimated €3 million. Many gang members are known to originate from the former Yugoslavia, but they work across countries and continents, making the exchange of police information such as fingerprints, photographs and DNA essential. In trying to catch these criminal masterminds INTERPOL set up the Pink Panthers project which assists law enforcers in identifying, locating and apprehending perpetrators.

SHOULD YOU STAY OR SHOULD YOU GO? T
HE Expat Explorer Survey published by HSBC ranked 39 countries around the world on criteria such as quality of life, economic confidence, wage growth, career progression, health and integration. Out of the 39 countries Spain was listed as 13th overall and third in Europe. Here we take a look at the pros and cons to being an expat in Spain.
Reasons why Spain is (and isn’t) a brilliant place to be an expatriate
QUALITY OF LIFE: Ranked in 2nd Place Spain ranks just behind New Zealand making it the second best place in the world to be an expat and is listed as the number one place in Europe. FORGING FRIENDSHIPS: Ranked in 4th Place The survey advises making an effort to learn the local lingo, as it will make socializing with locals much easier. Spaniards with their easy going and laid back attitude are a friendly bunch so making friends will be a lot easier than you think. LIFESPAN & HEALTH: Ranked 1st Place Spain has one of the highest life expectancies in the world and is renowned for its healthy Mediterranean diet full of fresh vegetables, fish and olive oil, maybe this contributes to its ranking as number one expat destination when it comes to a long healthy life. PROPERTY: Ranked 3rd Place It seems that now is an excellent time to buy your dream Spanish home, with plenty of property on offer - although in some of the more exclusive areas there may be less available than you imagine. Good deals are to be found in all price brackets but don’t expect sellers to accept very low offers – after all, they also know that the market is slowly improving CULTURE : Ranked 3rd Place Everyone knows Spaniards love a reason to party and with over 3000 fiestas celebrated annually across the country its little wonder why! According to the survey over 70 percent of expats said they enjoy immersing themselves into the culture of Spain WORK / LIFE BALANCE: Ranked 9th Place We all struggle with this but it seems the Spanish has found a way to blend the two effectively with the lunch time siesta’s and easy going al ’fresco dining expats view Spain’s way of a life a happier place to unwind.
THE PAIN IN SPAIN SINCE August unemployment across the region has risen, with figures released last week by the Ministry that currently reaching 4.18 million people are registered as unemployed. From September to October nearly 100,000 Spaniards were fired or whose contracts expired as the seasonal summer work came to an end. Following six years of rising unemployment, the Spanish labour market started creating jobs in the summer of 2014 and still remains the highest rate across the Eurozone with the exception of Greece. Spain’s conservative government has said it expects a slight drop in unemployment to 21.1 percent by year end, down from 23.7 percent a year earlier. Statistics on unemployment becomes ever more significant as Spain heads towards general elections on December 20th.
Reasons not to be an expat WAGE GROWTH: Ranked 39th Place Although the survey does note that the situation is “steadily improving” Spain has struggled since the financial crisis with the average monthly salary €1615.00 – this is ranked 13th in the Eurozone. Luxemburg leads the way at €3189.00 per month. BUSINESS START UPS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP Ranked 37th Place Spain financial institutes namely banks are notorious for not being willing to help with start-up businesses, but with the growth of internet ‘crowdfunding’ sites the situation is beginning to make strides. CAREER PROGRESSION: Ranked 38th Place Spain has the second highest rate of unemployment in the EU. JOB SECURITY: Ranked 38th Place Spain is not the best place to come for job security; in fact, it is one of the worst. This is due to its high unemployment rate of just over 22 percent and recent economic woes. ECONOMIC CONFIDENCE: Ranked 32nd Place Close to 75% of expats said that at least one aspect of their finances “has become complicated” since moving to Spain. POLITICS: Ranked 32nd Place Spain is listed in 32nd place out of 39 countries in the Eurozone for corruptions rates. This alone puts people off. LOCAL AND REST OF SPAIN NEWS Thousands of anti-war protesters in Italy and Spain have taken to the streets to express opposition to war games conducted in their respective countries by the US-led NATO military alliance. THE capital cities of Spain and Portugal saw demonstrators carry banners and chant antiNATO and anti-US slogans, insisting that the aim of ongoing military drills – dubbed ‘Trident Juncture 2015’ -- is to prepare for new aggression on the horizon. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) war games, which are conducted in 28 military bases in Portugal, Spain and Italy, as well as in the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions, has experienced strong resistance among peace activists. A total of 36,000 soldiers from over 40 countries are reported to have taken part in the training. The games are the largest such games in the past 13 years. Many Europeans are criticizing the expansion of the transatlantic military alliance and its attempts to incorporate an increasing number of Eastern European countries into its sphere of influence. The criticism also concerns deliberate and provocative confrontation with Russia as

well as NATO’s constant military involvement in crises in North Africa and the Middle East. Waving anti-war banners and chanting slogans such as “No to NATO, bases out”, “Imperialism is terrorism”, and “Yankees go home.” the protesters in Madrid marched through the centre of the city to censure the massive
military drills that are currently underway in Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Organized by the Global Platform Against Wars, the protesters marched from Callao Square to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The games will end on November 6th
Terrorists attack averted THREE Moroccan born suspects have been arrested in dawn raids by Spanish police on suspicion of plotting to commit terror attacks. The trio, who have not been named, are believed to have links to Islamic State and hold Spanish residencies. Interior Ministry officials said in a statement released that: “Police in Madrid have arrested three people of Moroccan origin, living in Spain, and accused of forming part of a group linked to the terrorist organisation DAESH.The operation was coordinated by a court in the Spanish capital and state prosecutors from Spain’s Central Criminal Court. The arrests were carried out by officers from the National Police in the neighbourhood of Vallecas and La Canada Real, a shanty town in on the outskirts of the capital known to be controlled by drug gangs. So far this year Spain has detained 60 individuals so far for alleged act or attempted acts of terrorism.

Russia and China have also engaged in talks about creating a joint lunar station.” We have told China of our plans about the possibility of creating a Russian national orbital station,” Rogozin told journalists after a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang in China earlier this year. According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who supervises defenserelated policies, the question of “bringing China in as the main partner in creating a lunar scientific station,” is currently being discussed with Roscosmos.

Think the EU’s protection of animal rights is good?
THINK AGAIN!
I
N June of this year American big–game hunter Walter Palmer killed Cecil the Lion (below), the much loved and protected lion king of the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe.
Cecil’s killing created an outrage among animal conservationists, prompted responses from politicians and many other people. A number of celebrities publicly condemned Cecil’s killing showing that around the world most of us condemn the killing and slaughtering of animals. So it is with much shock and bewilderment that the EU’s Scientific Review Group has outrageously decided to make a U-turn on an earlier decision to suspend imports of Elephant hunt trophy imports from Zambia. In April, their exports of elephant trophies were stopped after serious concerns about severely low elephant population levels. The same EU group have also agreed to continue allowing imports of lion hunting trophies from Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique. This means Cecil’s feline friends and relatives, can now be legally imported into the EU without any restrictions at all! Co-Founder of LionAid Dr Pieter Kat at a recent press event stated: “LionAid visited Brussels before the SRG meeting (of the 15th September) to discuss the sustainability of lion trophy imports from Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique. We again provided much scientific evidence to demonstrate that lion populations are in catastrophic and continuous decline in all lion range states. It is disappointing that it appears from the outcome that political agendas superseded scientific evidence. We are seeking an urgent meeting with the EU Commission to determine on what justifiable grounds these decisions were made, and to strongly urge that the December SRG meeting reconsiders their conclusions. “ It appears the EU’s Scientific Review Group’s U-turn was based on evidence presented by the Zambian government who claimed an aerial survey suggests there are now 33,000 elephants in the country. Campaigners hotly dispute the population estimates used but the Tanzanian and Zambian governments who also claim trophy hunting can contribute to wildlife conservation if properly managed. During his recent visit to China Prince William made a heartfelt plea on Chinese State Television stating that elephants, rhino and other endangered species will be extinct by the time children born this year - including his daughter Princess Charlotte - reach the age of 25, unless China ceases its demand for poached wildlife parts. “Rhino horn cannot cure cancer,” he added, but with recent reports revealing trophies such as elephant skin handbags and bracelets are being imported into Britain, it seems as though Brussels has taken a view on the issue - ‘If you can’t beat them, join them’.
DANISH F-16 JET CRASHES INTO NORTH SEA AN F-16 fighter jet belonging to Defence Command Denmark has crashed into the North Sea off the coast of the island of Rømø, it has been confirmed. The Danish military says an air force F-16 fighter jet crashed in the North Sea off western Denmark during a training flight. The military says the pilot emptied the jet fighter’s fuel tanks over the North Sea before ejecting himself safely under “controlled circumstances”. He was then picked up at sea by a helicopter. The agency’s accident investigation board is now looking into the incident, according to the head of the Fighter
Wing Skrydstrup airbase in southwestern Denmark, Anders Rex. “Our pilots are trained for this, but it’s a violent experience and he will get all the support he needs,” Rex said in a statement. Denmark took delivery of its first F-16 in 1980 and currently has around 30 in operation with seven being used by NATO combating the Islamic State extremist group

ARGENTINA BIDS FAREWELL TO KIRCHNER RULE After 12 years of ruling Argentina the leadership of Latin America’s third largest economy looks to be shifting from the hands of the Kirchner family. Whilst some may argue the Kirchners have beguiled, enraged, entertained and divided Argentine. Constitutionally Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is unable to run again after taking power from husband eight years ago so while the polls await the election of the new ruling party here we look at the successes and misfortunes of the Kirchner’s rule.
HIGHS Nationalisation of YPF and Aerolineas Argentinas In 2012, on the advice of Axel Kicillof who later became economy minister, Mrs Fernandez nationalised the oil company YPF seizing a 51 per cent stake, taking it from Spanish company Repsol. Repsol demanded $10 billion (£6.5 billion) compensation, and the issue marked a low point for Argentine-Spanish relations. But after two years of wrangling, an agreement was reached to pay $5 billion. The YPF nationalisation followed the 2008 na-
tionalisation, of Aerolineas Argentinas. Since then it remains in debt, but has doubled the number of aircraft and increased flights by 22 per cent. Since both companies have been nationalised they have both fallen into debt with no investment
subsidies for students, single mothers and pensioners which are now common practise. Argentina now has the highest minimum wage in all Latin America. In June she was honoured by the World Food Project for reducing malnourishment to under five per cent of the population.
Lifting the country out of poverty
Education and health care
Under the power of Nestor Kirchner the country’s economy was slowly rebuilt following the 2001 economic collapse that wiped out savings and even led to malnutrition in the country. Cristina Fernandez then continued with poverty reduction in the form of

One of Mrs Fernandez’s flagship policies has been Progresar, which gives cash to students to fund their education and encourage them to stay in school. Critics, however, say that the education provided is of poor quality but education remains free, and access to health care has also widened under the Kirchners. Laptop computers were given to three million students, and internet access increased in schools.
Election of Cristina When Nestor Kirchner decided he didn’t want to seek re-election in 2007, his wife stepped in. With his vast experience Mr Kirchner

played a powerful behind-the-scenes role in his wife’s new presidency with many believing the couple would bounce the presidency between them ensuring their family remained in office. This however could not happen following his death at the age of 60 from a heart attack. Whilst Isabel Peron a national treasure, became the world’s first female president on the death of her husband, Juan Peron Christina is the first elected female president in Argentine history.
Cleaning up after the Junta’s ‘Dirty War’ As part of his pledge to office in 2003, Nestor Kirchner immediately promised to bring justice to victims’ relatives of crimes committed during the Dirty War of the 1970s and 80s. He revoked a ban on extradition of those sought by foreign courts on genocide charges and ordered the arrest of 46 suspects wanted by Spain. The continuing process has already seen 1,000 people convicted with 500 sentenced. The government estimates another 900 are currently being prosecuted.

LOWS The Controversial election of Nestor Nestor Kirchner was sworn in as president of Argentina, having won an election by default. He obtained the lowest percentage of votes during the first round of voting and was due to face former President Carlos Menem but Mr Menem withdrew from the race.
Farmers Protests The farmers of Argentina began a series of massive protests, bringing Buenos Aires and much of the country to a standstill in demonstrations that ultimately turned violent, following Mrs Fernandez’s introduction of a sliding tax scale on agricultural exports, which has the effect of raising export taxes on soya – Argentina is the world’s largest soya producer – from 35 per cent to 44 per cent. Four months later, Congress refused to back
Currency controls Currency controls introduced in 2012 meant that only those with proof that they were travelling abroad could purchase foreign currency and the black market rocketed. Today if you go to a black market “Cueva” – cave – you can obtain 16.10 pesos for one dollar – a 70 per cent margin, while the official exchange rate is 9.5 pesos to the dollar. When severe flooding hit Buenos Aires in April 2012, the mayor, Mauricio Macri was furious that he was not allowed to ask for a loan to rebuild his city as this law also prevented the taking of international loans.
Devaluation The most recent report from the Congress Index – a group of opposition MPs who chart the actual price of items, versus the official prices – found that the cost of a basic basket of goods had risen 23 per cent, year on year. In January 2014 the peso was devalued by 15 per cent, in a bid to stave off inflation. But it was unsuccessful and today the official inflation rate is 15 per cent, while unofficially it is believed to be around 30 per cent.
The questionable murder of Nisman her proposal and she was forced into a U-turn with her own vice president casting the deciding vote. The wheat harvest is now at its lowest levels in decades, as farmers blame export taxes and currency controls. Even beef – icon of Argentine agriculture – has suffered, with Uruguay and Paraguay now exporting more. Relations with farmers remain tense.
In1994 the country suffered its worst ever terrorist attack with the bombing of a Jewish cultural centre, the AMIA, in Buenos Aires. The attack resulted in eighty five deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Repayment of the Vulture Fund Following the collapse of 2001 in 2005 Argentine agreed a debt restructuring initiative which was accepted by 92 per cent of investors. But three years later hedge funds, led by American firm NML Capital, who had brought $49 million of bonds sought to reclaim $828 million in repayment. In 2014 Thomas Griesa, a New York judge, blocked payment for those bond holders who had agreed to settle – turning the dispute ugly. Resolving this dispute will be a priority for whoever takes over as president. The problem arises because creditors are demanding full repayment plus interest from their loans – This claiming of funds lead Mrs Fernandez to term the repayments ermed “vulture funds.”
Relations with the UK Since taking office Mrs Fernandez has been a campaigner for Argentina’s claim of ‘Guerra de la Malvinas’ The Falklands. Her continual fixation on reclaiming this land has resulting in a breakdown in relations between Stanley, London and Buenos Aires. The tension intensified further when in 2010 it was announcement that the archipelago was a likely location of substantial oil reserves.
Many believed the atrocities had been carried out by Hizbollah. Following several failed investigations Alberto Nisman, a prosecutor, was assigned to the case. His findings resulted in a verdict: ‘that Mrs Fernandez orchestrated a cover-up of the evidence and in return for favourable deals on oil and grain she had shielded Iran from blame.’ The day before he was due to present his findings in Congress he was found dead, initially it was thought to be a suicide - Now many believe he was murdered the investigation into his death continues.
Mrs Fernandez’s with her running mate Amado Boudou
Union Strikes Mrs Fernandez initially counted on the support of the powerful trade unions but the leaders turned against her, organising a series of strikes and demonstrations the largest conducted by General Labor Conferation (CGT) .
A significant increase in personal wealth Argentina’s anti-corruption watchdog reported in 2013 that the couple’s wealth had jumped from $7 million on election to $82 million a decade later a 1,172 % increase Christina claims this wealth has come from her law firm however, investigations into the purchase of and building of numerous hotels in the Southern state of Santa Cruz. The ho-
tels are also being investigated for failing to pay tax.
Claims of a corrupt Vice President In 2012 Amado Boudou who was Mrs Fernandez’s running mate for the 2011 elections, and has been vice president ever since, was accused of corruption relating to a deal to buy a printing company which made bank notes. He claimed he never knew the people involved – yet the owner of the company was later proved to be renting a flat belonging to Mr Boudou. Mr Boudou remains vice president, despite opposition attempts to impeach him, and despite a series of cases currently in progress against him. The prosecution has been asked to bring forth a case, but has yet to do so.

Israeli cafe owner offers half price deal to Arabs and Jews who eat together THE owner of a cafe in central Israel is attempting to bring people together in the conflict-laden region over hummus. Kobi Tzafrir of the Hummus Bar which is situated in the town of Kfar Vitkin in Al Jazeera, is offering a 50 percent discount to Jewish and Arab customers who eat at the same table. Customers have responded positively to the ad, Tzafrir told Al Jazeera, noting that at least three tables have taken advantage of the deal, but more mixed tables chose to pay full price in support of Tzafrir’s plan. “If there’s anything that can bring together these peoples, its hummus,” the owner said in a recent press release, explaining that he came up with the idea in response to increasing intolerance in the area. Over the past month, at least 44 Palestinians, eight Israelis, and one Eritrean man have been killed in street violence in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.
China abandons one-child policy, allowing two children AFTER implementing its controversial “one-child” policy more than 30 years ago Beijing’s ruling Communist Party last week announced that all couples would now be allowed to have two children. The decision to remove the restrictions which were introduced by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in 1979 to cap the number of children couples could
have in an attempt to reduce the burden on resources amid an increasing population was made after a four day gathering in Beijing. Although the policy has been gradually relaxed in recent years primarily because the country now struggles with an ageing population and also because the country has experiencing economic growth its re-
versal was expected, as a previous effort to raise national births by 2 million a year failed. It is estimated that the one-child policy has prevented an estimated 400 million births since it was implemented. Couples who did not adhere to the policy faced fines, loss of employment and forced abortions and social stigmas.

IT’S AN OBVIOUS CHOICE SPAIN CHOSEN FOR FILMING THE ‘BEST OF THE BEST’ RECORDING of the new season of the Norwegian program “Best av de Beste” (Best of the Best) has started in San Roque. Filming will take place in Alcaidesa, Puerto Sotogrande, Castellar, Gibraltar and Tarifa. Best av de Beste is a Norwegian TV series on TV 2 showing top athletes in informal competition for the title “Best of the best.” The first season aired in December 2010, and was filmed in Larvik, Norway for its first 4 seasons before moving to San Roque for the 5th season which was filmed in the spring of this year. Currently being filmed is the 6th season. So far the contestants have raced in the streets of San Roque, Old Town and took part in events in the La Alameda, which is the Main Square and park in San Roque. The City Council and Local Police are collaborating with the show’s producer “Global TV” and are happy to accommodate the filming of a show that has achieved an audience of more than a million people, quite remarkable in a country of five million inhabitants. Best av de Beste also serves to promote the area and attractions around Campo de Gibraltar which stretches from Sotogrande to Tarifa. This along with the recent visit of Norwegian Tour Operators to Sotogrande means the area is beginning to seem quite fashionable in the Nordic country. The deputy mayor of Tourism, Dolores Marchena, noted “these activities serve to promote the destination San Roque directly in the countries of origin of tourists. Therefore, it will maintain our collaboration with Global TV if, as expected, they decide to record a new season in the town next spring “

‘Gibraltar Studies’ to be introduced into schools A GIBRALTAR-SPECIFIC subject is to be introduced into the curriculum of all first and middle schools with effect from September 2016. This was announced on Tuesday evening by the Minister for Education, the Hon Gilbert Licudi. The subject will cover such areas as: • History, including the Neanderthals, various periods including Arab, Spanish and British periods, the development of Gibraltar as a people • Natural History, including macaques, flora, birds (especially as a migration point), geology • Environment, including the marine environment • Industry, including the development of trade and the importance of Gibraltar as a trading point • Tourism • Culture, including reference to Gibraltar as a multicultural society • Food. A curriculum working group will now be established to develop the details of the new course. As an example of the Natural History element of the course, it is intended that, by the time they leave middle school, all children will have benefitted from at least one outing to learn about the macaques in their natural environment. Minister Licudi said: ‘There is so much to learn about Gibraltar and we want it to be taught in a structured manner.’

Lest we Forget – Remembrance Day, Sunday 8th November THIS year, as last year, Gibraltar’s Ceremony of Remembrance will be held at the British War Memorial on Line Wall Road, opposite City Hall, at noon. The service will be led by Her Excellency the Governor, in her capacity as Her Majesty The Queen’s representative. On her arrival, Her Excellency will read the Bidding. This will be followed by the observance of the Two Minutes Silence, the beginning and end of which will be signalled by a saluting gun. The Last Post will be sounded, after which wreaths will be laid and an inter-denominational service will be held. The Ceremony will conclude with the sounding of Reveille and the singing of the National Anthem. Medals and decorations may be worn with civilian dress by all those entitled to do so. The medals of deceased Services personnel may be worn by relatives. Although the ceremony starts at 1200, members of the public may wish to be in position by 11.30.
Gibraltar fights off daily cybercrime attacks FOLLOWING the recent ‘TalkTalk’ hacking scandal cybercrime is once again in the media spotlight. Cyber espionage and theft of individuals’ personal information is believed to have affected more than 800 million people last year and is estimated to have cost the global economy €363 billion. Internet security company McAfee forecasts that, over the next three years, financial losses from Cyber theft could cause as many as 150,000 in Europe to lose their jobs. But it is not only cash and jobs that are at risk from these attacks. Internet criminals target company and personal data - passwords, bank account details and so on - which are
then used to extract their victims’ cash or in the case of TalkTalk customer details which are then held to ransom The global scale of the problem is reflected in Gibraltar which is under Cyber-assault from thousands of attempts daily, according to Alan Pereira, chief information officer of the Financial Services Commission (FSC). ‘Gibraltar has remained isolated from big cyberattacks in the past, but nowadays we are seeing more instances of Cybercrime creeping into our jurisdiction. Cybercrime is a fast-growing area of criminal activity. The increase in connectivity speeds, reliability and anonymity of the Internet has helped expand the reach of these criminals
leaving footprints of their activities all over the world.’ He said at a conference last week aimed at local businesses who take out insurances packages protecting them against cybercrime. ‘Many of the attacks we here in Gibraltar face are mere phishing attempts to detect potential vulnerabilities. If a vulnerability is found, the potential hackers will see what they can get out of this and whether it is in their interest to exploit this further’. An incoming EU legislation against cybercrime aims to make businesses responsible for reimbursing their employees, and informing them of any breach that puts at risk their personal data.
GIBRALTAR TO HOST 2019 ISLAND GAMES THE minister of sport and the Gibraltar Island Games Association have announced that Gibraltar will be hosting the 2019 Island Games. The Island Games began in 1985 as the Inter-Island Games, as part of the Isle of Man International Year of Sport, and were intended to be a one-off sporting celebration only. Geoffrey Corlett, who became the first Games Director, not only contacted the islands surrounding the United Kingdom, but also encouraged the countries of Iceland and Malta, the territories of Faroe Islands, Greenland, Saint Helena, the Channel Islands and others to participate. Initially, fifteen islands with 600 competitors and officials took part in seven sports. The track and field events were held on an eight-lane grass track, a far cry from the current games, which now use synthetic tracks in stadiums capable of holding thousands of spectators. So successful were the Games of 1985 that it was decided to hold a similar event two years later and every two years since.
The 2015 Island Games held in Jersey
Gibraltar made a bid to host the games back in September, this was approved by the International Island Games Association and the contract was awarded to the Rock. Twelve sports in total will be featured; this will include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Judo, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Tenpin Bowling and Triathlon. Minister Steven Linares, congratulated the Association on landing the Games, and said he was sure that the whole community would be engaging in making these games as successful as the last time Gibraltar hosted them in 1995. He said the Government would be supporting the Association every step of the way.

HAIRMAN of the APPG for Gibraltar, Jack Lopresti (right), urged the Government to “significantly increase” its naval presence in the Strait. Speaking earlier this month during his Westminster Hall debate on Gibraltar and relations with Spain, Mr Lopresti said the two Royal Navy ships in Gibraltar were more than 20 years old and “not really the best modern option”. He said: “I think the British Government should significantly increase its naval presence in the Straits.
SIGNAL It would send the clearest possible signal to Spain that we are absolutely serious about defending our strategic interests in Gibraltar and defending our people there. As history has proven countless times, weakness is provocative. I think we should make the rules of engagement for our naval vessels more robust, for clarity and to act as a deterrent. I fear there will be a tragedy sooner or later as a result of the aggressive illegal Spanish incursions with lives lost if we are not clear about how serious we are.” Mr Lopresti noted that since 2011 the Spanish ambassador had been summoned at least five times, adding: “This puts Spain in the same category as North Korea and Syria, a completely ridiculous situation.” He said:
Spain must understand that Gibraltar is serious about defending its territory There will be a tragedy sooner or later as a result of the “aggressive, illegal” Spanish incursions with lives lost, if Britain is “not clear about how serious we are” on Gibraltar, a Tory MP has warned. “Gibraltar has been British for longer than the US has been a nation it is time for the Spanish Government to stop using Gibraltar to mask their own problems and inadequacies and start behaving like a true NATO and European ally.” The MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke stated that in the last eight months there have been 285 unlawful incursions of Spanish state vessels into British Gibraltarian waters. Midtown Car Park expansion continues

H M Government of Gibraltar has announced the provision of a further 350 car parking spaces at the Midtown car park. This will bring the total number of parking spaces in this car park to 700 which is double the number of spaces that were previously available where the Commonwealth Park now stands. The following levels will be opened to the public: Level 01 (Ground floor) and Level 02A will be unavailable for parking between 3am and 7am. Levels 02B, 03A, 03B, 04A, 04B, 05A, 05B and 06A will be available for free parking. The Minister for Traffic, Transport and Technical Services, the Hon Paul Balban said: “I am delighted to see the provision of another 350 parking spaces, especially here in the middle of town. This Government has successfully made parking one of its main planning priorities.”
Europe minister Pat McFadden said: “Spain is trying to put the squeeze on Gibraltar through these measures”, adding Parliament should send a signal out that there is “no point” in putting a squeeze on Gibraltar because its status will not change unless the people of Gibraltar decide that it should.“ Europe minister David Lidington said the UK Government had promised it would protect the right of the people of Gibraltar to determine
their own political future he also paid tribute to the “vigilance and sheer hard work” of the Royal Navy’s Gibraltar squadron “While any incursion is a violation of sovereignty, incursions do not threaten or weaken the legal basis of British sovereignty...but this kind of behaviour by Spanish state vessels is unacceptable.” Since 2013 there have been an average of 40.5 incursions a month, 32.3 in 2014 and 37.4 by the end of August 2015.

HRILLSEEKERS have a new way of travelling internationally - with a zipline that goes from Spain to Portugal in less than a minute and back in time. At first glance, you will hardly notice that there was a steel cable connecting Sanlucar de Guadiana, in Andalucia, Spain, to Alcoutim, in Algarve, Portugal. Over 720 meters in length, it is the world’s only zip line to cross an international border carrying individuals over the Guadiana River at speeds between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour. The departure platform is located at the side of the Sanlucar de Guadiana castle, almost 100 meters above the river. The landing point is a mere 15 meters high, in Alcoutim, creating an average angle of descent of around 12.47 %, which can be completed in less than a minute. Englishman David Jarman, who set up and created the 2,365ft zipline, called The Limitzero line - “la tirolina” in Spanish - crosses the Guadiana River at 50 feet above sea level. “It seemed like a great way to unite both places, since a bridge had been talked about for many years, but was never realized,” Jarman says. “Plus, I love a challenge!” Here’s how it works: A 4x4 takes you to the departing platform, near Spain’s San Marco Castle, and in less than a minute, you arrive on the Portuguese side, no passport required. Speeds can reach up to 45 miles per hour. A short walk takes you to Alcoutim village, where a small passenger ferry awaits anyone who needs a ride back to Spain; fare is included in the 15 euro price and, thanks to time zone differences between the two nations, the 60 second journey will see the zipliners travel back in time one hour.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE 5TH NOVEMBER THE 5th November is annually celebrated across the UK as Guy Fawkes, it is also sometimes known as Bonfire Night. It marks the anniversary of the discovery of a plot organized by Catholic conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605 this event in history has become known as ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ In the 17th century, the Catholics in Great Britain had become frustrated with the indifferent and harsh attitude of the people and
the government towards their religion. The Gunpowder Plot was meant to kill King James I and destroy the English Parliament bringing about a Catholic uprising One of the main conspirators of the plot was Guy Fawkes, after which the day is named. The conspirators of the plot began planning a year in advance and around 36 barrels of gunpowder was stored in the House of Lords which were covered with iron bars and firewood. However, the conspiracy was exposed

by a secret letter to Lord Monteagle, who was persuaded not to attend the Parliament on that day. The letter saw a massive hunt for the perpetrators and Guy Fawkes was finally arrested on the day, with a few others held and some killed too. The people of Great Britain were happy that their King was saved and this was followed by burning of firecrackers and bonfires, which has led to the current tradition of Guy Fawkes Day. Also called Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night, the day is celebrated with a show of fireworks and bonfires. Unlike the 18th and the 19th century when the celebrations were more robust, the celebrations of today have become largely muted. However, some parts of Great Britain still celebrate the day in a customary fashion. Men run after each other on the streets with kit tar barrels while effigies of Guy Fawkes are also burnt in certain parts. Bonfires form a major part of the celebrations with the greatest one being in Lewes, England. Also called the Bonfire Capital of the World, thousands of people throng the streets at night in Lewes in front of a large bonfire to celebrate the day. In Lewes, the day is also celebrated in memory of the Protestant Martyrs who laid down their life during the Marian Persecutions.

‘Sesame Street’ introduces first character with autism: MEET JULIA THE gang from “Sesame Street” is welcoming a new member to the neighbourhood — Julia, a girl who has bright orange hair and big green eyes. She also has autism. Julia is the latest creation from the Sesame Workshop, and she offers children a relatable character they can understand, whether they’re living with autism or know someone who is. Earlier this month, “Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children” was launched online, and Julia is just part of that educational and awareness initiative. “Children with autism are five times more likely to get bullied,” Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, the senior vice president of community and family engagement at Sesame Workshop, said. “And with one in 68 children having autism, that’s a lot of bullying. Our goal is to bring forth what all children share in common, not their differences. Children with autism share in the joy of playing and loving and being friends and being part of a group.” Sherrie Westin, executive vice president of global impact and philanthropy at Sesame Workshop, said in a statement. “This project is an extension of the belief we’ve always promoted: ‘We are all different, but all the same.’ I am passionate about this initiative, and am so proud of the partnerships with the autism community that have led to this.” For further information visit: www.SesameStreet.org/Autism
DRIVING WITH BABY JUST GOT EASIER NEW parents have plenty to think about when they’re on the road with a baby on board. That’s why Garmin have invented babyCam — the world’s first in-vehicle video baby monitor designed to give you an “on demand” view of your baby, on your compatible Garmin navigation display¹. So, you can drive with turn-by-turn GPS route guidance — and still check on baby without turning around. Garmin babyCam: It’s the watchful helper you need. Every trip. Every time. Available in America launches in January in Europe. NIGHT VISION babyCam also features night vision to give you a clear view in low-light conditions without turning on interior lights or disturbing your baby (who may have finally nodded off to sleep). Day or night, the camera captures great-looking video, and its adjustable viewing angle enables you to focus in on baby — or widen the picture to include multiple children and carseats in back. INSTALLS EASILY IN MINUTES You don’t need tools. You don’t need wiring. Fact is, you don’t need more than a few minutes to get your babyCam system up and running. A simple, but highly secure, twist-to-clamp bracket lets you mount the camera to a front- or backseat headrest*, depending on which way your child’s car seat is facing. By simply connecting your compatible¹ Garmin navigation device
to the wireless video and traffic receiver power cable (included with babyCam), your system is ready to sync. Once your device is powered on and wirelessly paired with babyCam, you’re all set to view the live video feed on your navigator’s display. PAIR WITH YOUR GARMIN NAVIGATOR For your convenience, babyCam was designed to work with a broad range of Garmin navigation devices. You can easily pair babyCam with any compatible¹ Garmin car, truck or RV navigation device you may already own, or pair babyCam with a compatible¹ navigation device of your choice. What’s more, if your paired Garmin device has voiceactivated navigation, you can even use a spoken command to switch your navigation display, hands-free, to the babyCam view.

ADD MORE CAMERAS Up to 4 cameras (Garmin babyCam or Garmin BC™ 30 wireless backup cameras, each sold separately) can be combined in 1 system for your vehicle, allowing for multiple camera views to be displayed on your Garmin navigator’s screen. WIRELESS BABYCAM Power your wireless babyCam with 2 AA batteries (not included). No need to fuss with turning babyCam on or off; drive confidently knowing babyCam is available “on demand” when wirelessly paired to your compatible GPS navigation device. Seamlessly switch from navigation display to babyCam view, and conserve battery power by simply adjusting the duration of babyCam view onscreen. Choose from 10, 20 or 30 seconds. A helpful alert on the navigation display notifies you when babyCam battery is low. If desired, plug babyCam into a vehicle power source instead of using batteries. ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR BABY With babyCam, you can drive with confidence. And once you’ve navigated to your destination, a helpful on-screen alert will remind you to check the rear seats for any passengers you’ll want to take with you before exiting the vehicle. ¹View list of compatible Garmin navigators *If your vehicle does not allow for mounting to seat headrest, please refer to the accessories tab for additional mounting options.

NEW law recently passed in France, mandates that all new buildings that are built in commercial zones must be partially covered in either plants or solar panels. Green roofs, as they are affectionately called are being hailed by eco-enthusiasts and energy activists alike because of their benefits in helping to reduce carbon emissions. The green roofs offer an insulating effect which help to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat a building during the winter or cool it in the summer. They are capable of retaining rainwater and reducing problems with runoff, and also offer birds a place to call home in the urban jungle. While businesses will have the option of incorporating solar panels instead of plants, most municipalities are opting for rooftop gardens because of the compendium of aesthetic benefits: rooftop gardens are excellent environments for employees to roam, they also add a bit of cheer to dreary industrial landscapes. Initially French environmental activists wanted to pass a law that would make the green roofs cover the entire surface of all new roofs. However, partially covered roofs make for a great start, and are still a huge step in the right direction. France isn’t the first to mandate roof gardens into their building regulations, places like Australia and Germany already have green roofs as a part of their urban landscape. Toronto has had green by-laws since 1998.

GARDENS IN THE SKY
The future of France’s urban design
Benefits of Green Roofs There are so many benefits to green roofs. Here are just a few: • Adding natural beauty and major aesthetic improvement to buildings, which in turn increases the investment opportunity. • Helping contribute to landfill diversion by prolonging the life of waterproofing membranes, using recycled materials, and prolonging the service of heating, ventilation, and HVAC systems through decreased use. • Green roofs assist with storm water management because water is stored by the substrate, then taken up by plants, and thus returned to the atmosphere through transpiration and evaporation. They also retain rainwater and moderate the temperature of the water and act as natural filters for the water that does run off. They delay the time at which runoff occurs,
which results in decreased stress on sewer systems during peak periods. • The plants on green roofs do a great job of capturing airborne pollutants and other atmospheric deposition. They can also filter noxious gasses. • They open up new areas for community gardens, commercial and recreational space in busy cities where this space is generally quite limited. France is definitely on the right track, but it should be a mandate that all new buildings being built across the world adopt by implementing this little change to our urban jungles we are helping to save the planet one skyscraper at a time.

GERMANY’S biggest bank announces job cuts following another shocking report loses. Deutsche Bank’s new chief executive John Cryan has announced plans to reduce the banks workforce by 35,000 over the next two years in what is being described as an overhaul following yet more loses. It plans to reduce its workforce by about 9,000 net fulltime equivalent positions plus around 6,000 external contractor positions in its Global Technology & Operations infrastructure function plus 20,000 additional jobs would be lost through its closure of onshore operations in 10 countries. These include Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Malta, and New Zealand. This time last year the bank reported a €92 million net loss.

CLEAR SKIES AHEAD FOR LUFTHANSA LUFTHANSA has battled a lot recently with striking pilots causing the cancellation of over 1,000 flights last month – The strike the 13th since April 2014 is the result of a long-running dispute over Lufthansa’s efforts to expand its low-cost Eurowings operation - a strategy that pilots view as a threat to their pay and benefits. But low oil prices and the strong demand for flights from passengers in Europe, have reflected in its trading results for the last nine-month with the company posting an operating profit of €1.5bn ($1.6bn), compared with €950m ($1bn) in the year-before period. With posi-
tive performance right across the group, Lufthansa has raised its earnings forecast for the full year from €1.5bn ($1.6bn) to €1.75bn€1.95bn ($1.85m-$1.95m), which would be a record.

with some banks choosing to put away millions more this year indicating that banks are fully aware that yet more tens of thousands of claims are still to be refunded. PIERRE Moscovici, the European economic affairs commissioner, has challenged Spain’s budget plans for 2016 stating that the proposed cuts presented by Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy would lead to a deficit of 3.5 per cent of economic output next year, which is above the EU’s 3 per cent ceiling and the 2.8 per cent target Madrid had agreed last year. Rajoy’s the People Party which after enforcing tough measures and austerity-led economic reforms has helped steer Spain to become one of the fastest growing countries within the Eurozone has staked their re-election campaign on continuing to fix the economy so this public rebuttal only adds to help political undermine the Prime Ministers economic success. Spain’s Economy Minister Luis de Guindos told reporters “I’m convinced we’re going to meet the targets set this will puts us in a very good position for 2016.” A meeting has now been scheduled with Eurozone ministers for late November to discuss each countries budget.

Bosch sues Dyson for making false claims about its vacuum cleaners
BSH HAUSGERATE, the parent company behind Siemens and Bosch, has launched a legal action against British technology company Dyson. The German company, which sells vacuum, is responding to legal action launched by Dyson where Dyson claim that BSH was misleading customers because it had installed controlled electronics to wrongfully increase energy consumption when tested. The controls were able to sense when the vacuum was being tested, and change results accordingly, similar to Volkswagen’s emissions scandal. In a statement, BSH said that the allegations against them are “unfounded and untrue” and that all of their machines are tested to the appropriate European standards. BSH claimed this wasn’t the first time James Dyson had taken an aggressive approach to knock down competitors, but the comment on cheating apparently forced Bosch to take legal action. BSH also pointed out that in 2014, it obtained an injunction against Dyson preventing it from making alleged false claims in its ads for some of its vacuums.
Britain faces reduction of aaa rating if it votes to leave the EU
BRITAIN’S credit rating could be reduced by as much as two places if it leaves the European Union, according to Standard & Poor’s. Standard and Poor (S&P) have confirmed that should the UK vote to quit the EU it would likely result in a one-notch downgrade, which could be increased by two notches if relations between London and Brussels deteriorated significantly leaving the UK with just a single A rating meaning it would be regarded as less credit worthy placing its creditworthiness on
par with Poland and Andorra who both hold the same rating. Britain’s has held on to its AAA rating with Standard and Poor since 1978 and this warning of a downgrade follows David Cameron’s decision to hold a referendum on EU membership which S&P claims could put Britain at greater risk of losing its tripleA credit score which would cause serious risks to the pound and Britain’s ability to attract foreign investment.

“FROM ANIMAL REALISM TO ABSTRACT” at Casino Marbella A weekend of Halloween celebrations in Casino Marbella opened with the art exhibition “From Animal Realism to Abstract” with a fabulous cocktail party
Coinciding with the opening of the art exhibition, was a Halloween themed party in the Jackpot Paradise Room. More than fifty guests came to the event - each wearing something orange to encompass the Halloween theme. Calaveras, gummy spiders, terrifying potions and cookies in the shape of bats were some of the delights that Marlene&CQ used to decorate the celebration. But undoubtedly the stars of the event were the players who came to the event in orange - each received a surprise gift and the most faithful followers of the Club Paradise were rewarded an extra prize. Both events were held over a weekend of ‘horror’ in Casino Marbella. A delicious halloween themed menu was offered at an affordable price. Starting with a steaming cauldron of pumpkin soup, followed by terrifying salmon on a potion of paprika and black olive juice or a shoulder of vampire goat in its own juice with dark roasted Payés and ending with the trick-or-treat chocolate and orange dessert - all for only €29.

MOVEMBER
Gents - treat your upper lip to a fur coat this month
D
URING Movember (the month formerly known as November), men around the globe grow moustaches while raising money for men’s health issues. Let’s face it men are known to be more indifferent towards their health, especially when compared to the efforts of women, who proactively and publicly address their health issues. As a result, today the levels of awareness, understanding and funding for support of male health issues, like prostate cancer & testicular cancer lag significantly behind causes such as breast cancer. The reasons for the poor state of men’s health around the world are numerous and complex and this is primarily due to a lack of awareness of the health issues men face and this can largely be attributed to the reluctance in men openly discussing the subject due to longstanding traditions, coupled with an ‘it’ll be alright’ attitude. Statistics sadly show that, on average, men die at a younger age than women – the average life expectancy for men is four years less than women. That said, despite trailing the women’s health movement, things are beginning to change, but much more progress needs to be made to close the gap between the state of men and women’s health.
Movember & Sons – United we Grow The Movember journey began in 2003 with a few mates in a pub in Melbourne, Australia. The goal was simple – to create a campaign promoting the growth of the moustache among like-minded people and have fun along the way. The movement is about real men growing real moustaches, talking about real issues to help change the face of men’s health. Since its inception a global army of over 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas have grown the Movember Foundation spans the globe across 21 countries and to date more than £400 million has been raised globally and over 1000 men’s health projects have been funded. 6 Superseeds you should be eating Don’t judge food by its size: These tiny superseeds are packed with essential nutrients like protein, fiber, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids Sunflower Seeds These underrated superseeds are an excellent source of B vitamins, including folate (which helps prevent birth defects), and vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from damage, helps maintain healthy hair and skin, and may work to prevent cancer. They are also rich in protein and heart-healthy fats. Eat them: Munch them by the handful, or add them to cookie or muffin recipes, salads, and stir-fries. Avoid salted versions, which often have high levels of sodium. Chia Seeds Ch-ch-chia! Chia seeds—particularly the Salba variety—are high in iron, folate, calcium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids and soluble fiber. The superseed’s calcium and magnesium promote bone and dental health, while the omega-3s help your heart by lowering triglycerides, the bad fats in your blood that can cause heart disease. Their soluble fiber helps decrease cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar, and make you feel full longer. Eat them: Add to smoothies, yogurt, cereal, salads, or muffin batter. Always buy fresh from a market; never eat what came in a craft kit. Wheat Germ The nutritional powerhouse of the wheat kernel, wheat germ is loaded with protein, iron, and B vitamins such as folate. The high fiber content of this superseed helps prevent constipation and keeps your appetite in check. And wheat germ is low on the glycemic index, so it doesn’t spike your blood sugar. Eat it: Wheat germ makes a great addition to smoothies, hot cereals, baking and cooking recipes. Because its healthy polyunsaturated fats can quickly turn rancid, keep wheat germ in a tightly sealed container in the freezer for optimum freshness. Flax Seeds These little, brown, nutty-flavored superseeds are a great source of soluble fiber, which helps lower cholesterol, makes you feel fuller longer, and aids in stabilizing blood sugar levels. Flax seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acid, which benefits eye and brain health, and can help lower triglycerides. High in lignans, a plant-like form of estrogen, they may also help prevent certain cancers. Eat them: Flax seed shells are hard, so grind them in a blender or coffee grinder first. Otherwise the seeds can pass through your body undigested, prohibiting the absorption of the seeds’ valuable omega-3 content. Add the coarse or finely ground superseeds to smoothies, shakes, yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, casseroles, and when baking. Note: Keep ground flax seeds in an airtight container in your refrigerator. Hemp Seeds Not just for hippies, these superseeds are a great source of complete protein and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They also contain phytosterols, plant-based compounds that help lower cholesterol levels. Note: While hemp and marijuana are both members of the cannabis family, hemp doesn’t contain THC, marijuana’s active ingredient. Eating hemp seeds will not give you the same effect as smoking marijuana. Eat them: Toss in salads, shakes, or smoothies, or sprinkle over cereal or yogurt. They also add texture to baked goods. Pumpkin Seeds Also known as pepitas, these superseeds are a source of B vitamins, iron, magnesium, zinc, and protein, and are particularly rich in the amino acid tryptophan, which may help lower anxiety. Pumpkin seeds also have high levels of essential fatty acids that help keep blood vessels healthy and lower bad cholesterol. Eat them: Snack on them raw or roasted. Add to granola bars and trail mix recipes; or use to garnish soup. Pumpkin seed oil can boost salad dressings and dips (although cooking may destroy some of its nutritional properties). World Diabetes Day EACH year on the 14th November countries around the world co-ordinate their activities to celebrate WORLD DIABETES DAY, November the 14th is actually a significant date in the diabetes calendar as it marks the birthday of the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting. The theme of this year’s World Diabetes Day is healthy living and diabetes with a focus on starting each day right by having a healthy breakfast. A healthy breakfast should help blood sugar levels from getting too high and should keep you full through the morning. Whilst cereal and toast may be cheap, these options typically raise blood sugar levels rapidly and may leave you hungry again before lunch. If you drink fruit juice for breakfast, consider cutting the juice out or having a smaller glass of it. For reference, a 150ml glass of unsweetened orange juice contains around 15g of carbohydrate and 13g of sugar

Helping patients achieve and maintain excellent gum health There is a common misconception that dental care is limited purely to the actual teeth – but what about the gums these are the solid foundation needed to achieve and maintain excellent oral health. Teeth are precious, and the thought of losing them can be quite distressing. Many clients often ask themselves ‘How can I save my teeth?’ and the answer is simple - take care to brush, floss and use mouthwash. At the first sign of swollen red gums and blood, it is recommended that you visit your dentist. They can begin treatment for minor gum abrasions, however for the treatment and prevention of further infection, periodontal care is required. Although very common, many patients wonder ‘What is gum disease?. From time to time, it’s not unlikely that a significant number of people have experienced sore or bleeding gums due to over brushing or ill care. However, if symptoms such as these persist then it could be evidence of something a little more severe. If the first signs of gum irritation and inflammation are ignored and left untreated, it can, in some extreme cases, lead to tooth loss. Periodontal disease is one of the three main types of gum disease, the others of which are gingivitis and the more severe version of the latter - acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG). Here at, Dentist – Sotogrande we specialise in periodontal (gum) problems, treating gum inflammation, infection and the build-up of plaque and tartar. The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal issues is a specialist subject, and you can be confident in the excellent services provided by our highly skilled team. Delivering quality periodontal care to patients, treating the onset of gum disease before it further develops, is our main priority. In general, treatment is quick and easy. Dr Friman provides care for the cases of periodontal diseases as well as aesthetic periodontal treatment. Cosmetic dentists are often assisted with the reconstruction of damaged gums, prior to the insertion of dental implants. Cutting edge laser periodontal therapy is used to remove the plaque and calculus pockets from around the teeth whilst smoothing the gum tissue to make brushing teeth easier and more effective.

NO, HRT ISN’T ‘HARMLESS’ there are risks as well as benefits Information provided by Cancer Research UK
A
WAVE of bold, and extremely misleading headlines about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) being “harmless” have flooded the news recently and this unfortunate statement flies in the face of years of research showing that, while HRT is an effective short-term treatment for menopausal symptoms, it also carries risks – particularly an increased likelihood of developing breast and ovarian cancer. For years, researchers around the world have been studying these risks, how they stack up, and how they change over time, to help women make an informed choice about taking HRT. The recent spat of news was based on the results of a study supported by drugs company Pfizer (who make HRT), which was presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s annual conference, and which have yet to be made public in a scientific journal. According to reports, the study involved 80 women who took HRT, and compared their risk of developing different types of cancer
with 56 women who hadn’t used HRT . These reports suggest the women used HRT for 14 years on average, and were monitored for 10 years to see if they developed problems. The researchers found that “women taking HRT were no more likely to develop breast cancer, heart disease or diabetes than any other women who did not take the treatment, the study found.
RESEARCH Professor Valerie Beral of Oxford University who runs the Cancer Research UK-funded Milton advices that, “There are over 50 studies worldwide, that in total have studied several million women, and to base advice on the results of 80 women, even over 10 years is quite meaningless”. These studies show overwhelmingly that HRT has risks as well as benefits. “Amongst the scientific community the evidence is really quite uncontroversial,” Beral said. “It is very clear there’s an increased risk of cancer of the breast, cancer of the ovary, blood clots and strokes in women who have taken HRT,
compared to women who have not.” This, she said is why the regulatory bodies in the UK, US and Europe all say the same thing: “Women who want to take HRT if they have very severe menopausal symptoms, should do so for as short a time as possible.”
SO WHAT SHOULD WOMEN DO? The evidence underpinning the benefits and risks of HRT didn’t arrive overnight – it has been accumulating for decades. Women need to be aware that, as well as of-
fering effective relief for menopausal symptoms, it also leads to more cases of breast and ovarian cancers, as well as strokes and blood clots. The risks and benefits will stack up differently for each woman, and whether or not to take HRT is clearly an individual choice. Women need clear, evidence-based information to help them decide – not sensationalist headlines based on unpublished research – If you are worried about your HRT therapy or need advice about menopausal relief please visit your health practitioner / GP or visit bit. ly/cruk-hrt for more information.

CHEESE IS AS ADDICTIVE AS DRUGS
F you’ve ever found yourself losing some self-control when it comes to eating pizza or nachos, or other cheesy stuff, believe it or not, it’s not your fault -- the stuff’s literally addictive. Scientists at the University of Michigan discovered that when a chemical called casein, which are found in all dairy products is digested it releases opiates called Casomorphins into the body. “Casomorphins attach to the brain’s opiate receptors to cause a calming effect in much the same way heroin and morphine do”, the report claims. The study, published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine, examined why certain foods are more addictive than others using the Yale Food Addiction Scale, where participants score foods between 1 and 7 based on resistibility (1 being the easiest to resist, 7 being the most difficult.) The scientists discovered pizza topped the “addictive” list – because of its cheesy, fatty topping with chocolate ranked in 2nd place. Here, the study’s 9 most addictive foods:
PIZZA
4.01
Food Addiction Rating: Slathered with gooey cheese and oil, pizza topped the charts as the most addictive food. The problem with this addiction is that a slice of pizza generally contains around 300 calories and about 10 grams of fat. Add processed meats like pepperoni or sausage and you’re talking 360 calories and up to 20 grams of fat. Keep in mind that the average woman 50+ should consume around 1,800 calories a day and 40 grams of fat, and the average man 50+ should have around 2,200 calories and 49 grams of fat.
CHOCOLATE
Food Addiction Rating:
3.73
Chocolate has long been thought of as an indulgence. A study at Drexel University found that people experienced craving and pleasure when eating chocolate similar to the feeling people get when they take drugs.
CRISPS
Food Addiction Rating:
3.73
Tying for second place, crisps are a snacker’s best friend (or enemy, depending on how you see it). No one can eat just one. Research presented in 2013 found that when given the choice between crisps and their regular food, rats overwhelmingly chose crisps, which had a marked effect on their brain behaviour. The rats ate to excess for pleasure rather than for hunger, according to the study’s main researcher, Dr. Tobias Hoch, Ph.D. nutritionally, crisps are loaded with fat. A serving of 30 chips will set you back 320 calories and a whopping 20 grams of fat.
COOKIES
Food Addiction Rating:
3.71
A much-touted study at Connecticut College found that Oreo cookies were as addictive as cocaine when given to rats. Though there have been several critics of the study, other studies have found that there is truth to the sugar-drug connection. In terms of nutrition, four small chocolate chip cookies have 192 calories and 10 grams of fat.
Dairy product triggers brain region linked to addiction ICE CREAM
Food Addiction Rating:
3.68
The creaminess is what draws you in, but it’s also your undoing. By virtue of what ice cream is—cream and milk—it contains very high levels of bad-for-you saturated fat. That means eating ice cream regularly isn’t great for your weight. One serving of Ben & Jerry’s vanilla ice cream, for example, contains 230 calories and 14 grams of fat.
FRENCH-FRIES
Food Addiction Rating:
3.60
They’re crispy and delicious, which makes you crave more, but fried foods like French fries have been linked to a potentially harmful substance called acrylamide, which has been shown to cause certain kinds of cancer in animals. While more research is being done, nutritional experts suggest cutting down eating fried foods. The nutritional info on French fries is also cause to pause, with a large order of McDonald’s fries having an astonishing 510 calories and 24 grams of fat.
CHEESEBURGER Food Addiction Rating:
3.51
The cheesy goodness is enough to make you swoon, but cheeseburgers also pack a lot of artery-hardening components including saturated fat and sodium. A Burger King cheeseburger has 270 calories, 12 grams of fat, and 630 mg of salt (which is almost half of the daily recommended amount, according to the American Heart Association.)
WEEKEND WORLD - 75
SODA
Food Addiction Rating:
3.29
One thing’s for sure, we love soda, even though each can is laden with 6 tablespoons of sugar. Soda has also been linked to obesity, high blood pressure and cancer.
CAKE
Food Addiction Rating:
3.26
Rich and chocolaty, red velvety, vanilla swirly—who doesn’t melt at a piece of cake? One study even claims that eating a breakfast that’s high in protein, carbohydrates and includes a dessert like cake, can actually help you lose weight. But most other researchers agree: cake generally contains a lot of notso-good-for-you processed sugar and fat. A slice of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting will set you back 506 calories and 22 grams of fat.

Easy drinking wines for November
For a medium bodied white:
For an intense ruby red:
Selbach Riesling Incline Mosel, Germany
2008 Viña Morandé Edicion Limitada Carignan - Loncomilla Valley, Chile
Created by Johannes Selbach, winemaker & director for the Selbach-Oster Estate — a top German wine producer in the Mosel region. The name Incline was chosen to honour the impossibly steep sloped terroir of the Mosel from which these grapes are grown. This is an off dry wine with beautiful aromas of violet, lychee, citrus & green apples. This medium bodied wine is well balanced with crisp refreshing acidity, round and of a good length. Ideally served with: Asian dishes with a slightly spicy twist.
This wine comes from the Santa Elena Loncomilla Valley a sub region of the Maule Valley in the Central Region of Chile. The wine displays good intensity and depth of a deep ruby red with a light purple hue indicating the potential for ageing. The Viña Morandé Edicion Limitada Carignan tends to be high in acidity due to its slow development. Its colour is intensely purple and its tannic structure is so intense that it would require a plate of blood sausages to tame it. Beautiful aromas of ripe cherries, prunes, raspberry and spiciness with a good balance on the palate provide a good long finish. Ideally served with: grilled or braised dishes and hearty red meat.
For a deep rich aroma:
2010 Mitolo G.A.M Shiraz McLaren Vale, Australia The G.A.M. Shiraz comes from the Chinese Block vineyard which is located in the Willunga district at the southern end of McLaren Vale. The climate here is a mixture of maritime with dry, warm, sunny days in the growing season and a fresh sea breeze that cools the air overnight this alone contributes to the development of rich fruit flavours and ripe tannins. Deep black purple with a rich and pungent aroma of blackcurrant, plum, chocolate and cedar. Very rich on the palate but with good moderate tannins and a very long finish. G.A.M. is opulent and robust, with a focus on finesse and multilayered complexity. It exhibits typical Mitolo softness and richness Ideal served with: hearty red meat.

Festive fun C & frivolity
hristmas is fast approaching so why not get into the festive spirit this year with a visit to one or more Christmas Markets scattered across Europe. Forget the hassle of frantic seasonal shopping in overcrowded city streets. The ambience of one of Europe’s advent markets encompasses everything a shopping centre experience does not – think decorated gingerbread men, candlelit carol singing, stocking-fillers of glass ornaments, wooden toys and porcelain dolls, and the occasional traditional treat to help you on your merry way. Here we take a look at some of the oldest and most stunning European Christmas Markets.
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC 28 November 2015 01 January 2016
Christmas markets (Vanocni trh) are a key ingredient of the festive magic in the Czech Republic. And the Prague Christmas markets are most impressive, lighting up the city and bringing locals and tourists together to share in the spirit, in a true ‘winter wonderland’ setting. The two best Vanocni trh are situated on the slopes of Wenceslas Square and in the Old Town Square. The markets consist of brightly decorated wooden huts selling traditional handcrafted products such as intricate glassware and jewellery, embroidered lace, wooden toys, metal-ware, ceramic plates and mugs, scented candles, beautifully dressed puppets and dolls, Christmas tree ornaments, and hats, gloves and scarves.
This picture perfect festive scene is complete with brightly decorated a wooden hut surrounding a giant glittering Christmas tree which is shipped in from the Krkonose Mountains in the North of the Czech Republic. It is erected at the Old Town Square and draped in a blaze of lights. The tree is switched on every night around 5pm. Set against Prague’s dark gothic skyline this is truly a spectacular sight. Finally the Prague Christmas markets wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local gourmet cuisine delights with offerings of honeyed gingerbread, vánocvka (a braided pastry with raisins), and vosí hnízda (biscuits laiden with nuts and rum).
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK 14 November 2015 - 03 January 2016 There are a number of charming Christmas markets to enjoy in Denmark, but if you’re looking for the most famous of them all – offering a real Danish flavour head to Copenhagen and the Christmas Market of Tivoli Gardens. Copenhagen is a Christmas city, not just because Greenland is the home of the ‘Julemand’ (Santa) but because this holiday is the most eagerly anticipated by all Danes who have passed down its simple pleasures and traditions from generation to generation. Each year the Tivoli Gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland thanks to more than 500,000 fairy lights. Although the Tivoli Christmas Market has only been running only since 1994, it attracts more than a million visitors, an astonishing figure given that Denmark has a population of 5.5 million. Stroll around the 60 colourfully painted stalls offering porcelain and wooden dolls while sipping on a warming glögg, (Danish mulled wine) which is laden with liquor, raisins and spices, followed by a hot apple dumpling to ward off the cold chills. Warm yourself with
a cup of mulled wine (gløgg) and take your time picking out that perfect Danish design gift or decoration to take home. The Russian theme, introduced last season, is still going strong this year, although Nordic touches have returned by popular demand. While the replica of St. Basil’s Cathedral remains, then, a traditional Father Christmas is back, residing in a nineteenth-century pantomime theatre, while stall decoration takes its lead from Danish and Scandinavian customs. The gardens also offer an ice rink, rollercoaster and theme park rides for those up for more than just a leisurely amble round the handicraft stalls. Based in the centre of the capital it attracts up to a million visitors, so expect crowds.
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN 21 November - December 2015 Christmas Markets or Advent markets in Sweden are extremely popular with locals and tourists alike and highlight many Swedish Christmas traditions, for example the consumption of glögg which is a hot spicy wine. Warm yourself with a glass of spicy mulled wine (glögg) and browse over the most gorgeous handicrafts and Christmas decorations. You can sample typical Swedish Christmas delicacies at the markets too so look out for smoked sausage, reindeer meat
and traditional Swedish Christmas sweets. The Liseburg Christmas Market which takes place in Gothenburg is reputed to be the largest in Sweden with over 60 stalls and an open air ice rink nearby. Outdoor stalls sell Swedish Christmas sweets, smoked sausages, reindeer meat, glögg and a wide range of Swedish handicrafts and other gifts. At least four Xmas Markets take place within the city area of Stockholm, namely Skansen on the park island of Djurgården, which has the world’s oldest open-air museum where the Christmas market date back to 1903, Gamla Stan, commonly known as The Old Town just south of the Royal Palace, is, the oldest of the Swedish capital’s four festive markets. Cobblestone streets, chiming church bells and a wonderful aroma of roasted chestnuts will make you feel like you’ve walked on the set of A Christmas Carol.
STRASBOURG, FRANCE 27 November - 31 December 2015 With over 300 market chalets, Strasbourg attracts over 1.6 million visitors during the Christmas season. There is an impressive Christmas tree on Place Kléber and a skating rink on Place du Château. Founded in 1570, Strasbourg Christmas market is without a doubt the most famous of all. Young and old stroll from chalet to chalet, enjoying the spice bread, bretzels, confectionery, pastries and mulled wine on offer. Strasbourg Christmas markets have something for everyone, every whim is permitted and pleasant surprises are legion: a large number of events, concerts and exhibitions provide opportunities for interesting encounters. Christkindelsmärik the oldest and most famous Christmas market is surrounded by the Notre Dame Cathedral, wooden stalls are stacked with delicate ornaments and nativity figurines as well as mid-shopping snacks and local specialties such as bredele (cookies) and Flammekueche (thin pizza with bacon, onions, and crème fraîche pictured right) other markets can be found on Place du Château, Place d’Austerlitz and Place du Cordeaux.

‘MO-NARCH’TAKES TO SKIES TO SUPPORT MOVEMBER
Free seat upgrades for customers sporting the best Mo’s*
MONARCH the leading scheduled leisure airline has announced that for the month of November 2015 it will be known as ’Monarch’ in support of Movember; the global campaign which creates positive change for men’s health through raising awareness and educating during their November take-over. For the first time in the company’s history, the iconic ‘spotty M’ will be replaced with a tache version and three of the aircraft in the airline’s fleet will be sporting upper lip-holstery for the month. During November the airline will also allow Mo-bros an additional 3kg of facial hair at no additional charge*, while cabin crew will be giving complimentary upgrades to Mo-legroom-seats to customers sporting the most tache-tastic Mo’s. Across the group Mo-narch staff will be participating in Movember activity by growing or displaying their own Mo’s and a calendar of competitions and social media activity will keep customers up-to-date on the company’s fund raising efforts. Pauline Prow, Chief People Officer said: “Movember is a campaign that engages our staff and the public. It’s a lot of fun and although we have to see a
variety of facial hair displays throughout the month – it’s worth it to support such a great cause.” Andrew Swaffield, Chief Executive Officer said: “I’m really pleased to be supporting Movember - it’s an excellent campaign that has personal meaning to my family. As well as being for a great cause it also gives us the opportunity to have some fun both internally and with our customers. It demonstrates how passionate and engaged employees are with the group’s corporate social responsibility. He added: “I’ve got my tache comb at the ready to keep my own Mo looking tip top and am looking forward to seeing all the new facial hair around the building!” Sarah Coghlan, UK Country Director, Movember Foundation said: “It’s great to have the support of Mo-narch this Movember. We’re looking forward to seeing them take the Mo sky high for the month and help support our cause.” *Additional 3kgs of facial hair at no extra charge must be established on one face and weigh no more than 3kgs. Weight cannot be spread across groups of Mo-bro’s or Mo-sista’s and cannot be applied to checked bags or hand luggage allowance.

FOCUS ON CELEBRITIES
Issue 10 November 05 - 18, 2015
SPLITSVILLE It’s seems this the autumn the big thing to do in celeb land is divorce your partner! Ben and Jen, Gwen and Gavin, Oliver Martinez & Halle Berry, even Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog are splitting, for pete’s sake. So what’s going on? Is it the weather? Something in the air or the water? Is it the times we live in, the terrible-horrible- era of 24/7 spotlight on celebrities and their marriages? We don’t know but can imagine its a little of all of that. Here we look at the latest marriage break-ups: OLIVIER MARTINEZ & HALLE BERRY According to court paperwork both have cited irreconcilable differences as the couple announced their divorce publicly, saying in a joint statement, “We move forward with love and respect for one another and the shared focus of what is best for our son.”
GAVIN ROSSDALE & GWEN STEFANI The couple made the surprise announcement that they are planning to divorce after 13 years of marriage and three children this year. “While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment,” the couple said in a statement. “To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time.”
ZAYN MALIK & PERRIE EDWARDS Following Zayn being photographed with another girl in Thailand and then leaving One Direction for good. It’s been a tumultuous year for these two but we still thought this pop couple would go the distance. We were wrong.
LAMAR ODOM & KHLOE KARDASHIAN
BEN AFFLECK & JENNIFER GARNER Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their divorce just one day after their 10th wedding anniversary. In a joint statement the couple said: “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. “We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.”
Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian have jointly gone to court to dismiss their divorce case, because they want to stay husband and wife. Khloe’s lawyer Laura Wasser went before a judge following Lamar’s recent collapse in a Texas brothel and subsequent hospital stay, asking a judge to withdraw the papers they both signed to end their marriage. The file was sitting in a pile waiting to be processed and signed by a judge. The judge granted Wasser’s request and the file is now dead. Khloe filed for divorce in December 2013, but sat on it for a year and a half because she tried to save her marriage by trying to get Lamar into rehab. She finally gave up this summer, but Khloe has now vowed to be by Lamar’s side during his recovery, which will take months, and they have both agreed to give their marriage another chance.
LEWIS HAMILTON & NICOLE SCHERZINGER Although not completely unexpected, we were still sad to hear that Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton had called time on their on-off relationship. “I’m devastated that it didn’t work out. It was the hardest decision we had to make, but we made it together,” she confirmed. “I love Lewis and I know he loves me. We wish nothing but happiness and the very best for one another.”

RADUALLY introduce changes in your dog’s routine as soon as you know baby is on the way - if he does not connect them with the baby’s arrival he has less reason to be jealous. Your dog should not be the centre of attention at all times, and should not sit on your lap (if at all) only when invited by you. Get him used to being away from you sometimes in another room, or indoor kennel (“crate”), and ban him from the nursery. Take a refresher course at a training school, and think about practice walks with the pram - it can be trickier than it sounds! Check with your vet about canine hygiene and worming. When your baby is born your dog may be left for hours while you are in hospital, or upset by the excitement if you are at home. Arrange for someone he knows to look after/walk him. Old wives tales such as letting your dog drink breast milk or play with dirty nappies, will not help your dog and baby to become friends, but sending home a blanket that the baby has slept on may help your dog to get used to her scent. When you come home let someone else hold your baby while you greet your dog; introduce them later when he is calm. Do not try to keep your dog and baby completely apart - you won’t be able to keep it up! Teach them both to interact calmly and gently, no licking by the dog or grabbing by the child. Never, ever leave dogs alone with babies or young children; shut your dog out of the room or pop the baby in a secure play-pen. This applies every time you use the bathroom, answer the door/phone or get a meal.

It is NOT a matter of “trust”. Toddlers can accidentally injure or alarm dogs (e.g. by falling on them) and startled dogs may react impulsively, lashing out or biting. Your dog may have to wait in the queue for love but he still needs you. Always having the baby nearby when giving him attention encourages your dog to ac-
cept having her around. The most tolerant dog needs peace and quiet sometimes; allow him a place (e.g. his bed) he can escape to without being followed. Allow the child to go there at other times to prevent it becoming an exclusive area which he feels entitled to defend. When your baby starts to crawl and walk

The same rules apply to older children, especially the ones about mutual respect and supervision. Stress that dogs are not living toys, especially when bringing a puppy into a family where children already live. Don’t allow children (or anyone else for that matter) to feed your dog from the table; suitable leftovers can be mixed into his meal afterwards. It is particularly important to “clear up” after your dog in the garden when your child becomes old enough to play there. Keep your dog out of the way when your children have friends round or are playing energetic games. It’s fun for your child to fuss and play with your dog, but teach games where you keep control, and always supervise. Older children should help feed, groom and train your pet so that they learn about the responsibilities as well as the fun of pets. Make sure your child always washes her hands afterwards. Children love to hold the lead, but don’t allow them to walk your dog alone. They may be able to manage your well behaved pet, but how would they cope if he was attacked by a large stray? Show children the correct way to befriend other people’s dogs - ask the owner first, then offer a hand for the dog to sniff from below his nose before you pat him. Not all dogs are friendly. Your child should not approach strays and must never go with strangers to see “the puppies at home”!
Visits from other people’s children Again the general rules apply, but (however much he loves them) your dog’s “level of tolerance” will be lower if he does not live with children all the time. Children and dogs must learn together (from you) how to get along. If it all gets too much, he may appreciate some time in his indoor kennel or another room. Most dogs need space.

HAWAII
A Hawaii couple might be taking their quest for a natural childbirth too far – they’ve decided to deliver the baby in the ocean, surrounded by dolphins! Dorina Rosin and her husband Maika Suneagle claim to be “dol-
phin people” and believe that their baby will be able to “speak dolphin” after the birth. It sounds bizarre, but as it turns out, dolphinassisted births are really a thing. The trend has been around for a few years now, and it appears to be gaining popularity. The idea
apparently sprung from immersion or water births that are quite popular the world over. But couples aren’t satisfied with just water any more – they want to be surrounded by friendly dolphins as well.
CODEWORD Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. 1 16 22 24 4 12 13

According to the Sirius Institute in Hawaii, which runs a dedicated dolphin-attended birth centre, the idea is quite “reasonable”. Their website states: “Since birthing in water is beneficial, and dolphins are able to heal or improve a wide range of medical conditions, it is reasonable to suppose that their presence at water births could be beneficial.
CHINA
Sun worshippers in China are bringing a new meaning to the term “eating light.” Every day, groups of women descends upon beaches in Lei Yue Mun, Hong Kong, to stare at the sun for up to 45 minutes.

Angry Russians now have a new way to release their pent up aggression by destroying entire rooms with sledge hammers, baseball bats, clubs and more! The art project, known as ‘Debosh’, offers stressed out folks this unique service for a price between 100€ to 500€ – dependent on the cost of the furniture involved. So far, the service has proved a big hit. There are other ‘rage room’ services in Moscow, but Project Debosh is so popular because it allows a huge amount of customization. Users can select the furniture through an a la carte service and they can have a car placed into the room to take their frustration out on. One happy customer, who preferred to remain anonymous, said he felt “just great” after destroying an entire room. “I decided to start with the TV,” he said. “I imagined that it must break very nicely, making a lot of noise with special effects. I had absolutely no thoughts in my head, and it was an amazing experience. I was so pleased when I finished up with the room, my body felt absolutely great.”

They are not tanning, but rather trying to “consume” the solar energy of the sun because these women believe that the sun’s nourishing rays can cut down on their appetite for calorific plant- or animal-based food. “We practice sun-gazing as a substitute for eating. Some of us who have finished the therapy now eat less, and others don’t have to eat at all,” one of the sun-gazers declared. But the supposed benefits go way beyond weight loss, with many sungazers believing that “eating sun” will increase intelligence and cure disease. Despite making life on Earth possible and containing some vitamin D, sunlight contains far less nutritional value than normal food, as far as the human

IGER Woods’ former caddy Steve Williams has described his anger and frustration at being “hung out to dry” by Woods’ management when the golfer’s infidelities were revealed to the public in 2009. For nearly four months he was left in the dark about what was going on and while Williams says he was angry to learn Woods had cheated on his wife Elin Nordegren, “he was still a friend in trouble and I wanted to stick by him, people called me an enabler, an accomplice, saying I was lying when I stated clearly that I knew nothing about it. I was also in limbo about when I would next work.” Williams said he didn’t consider quitting as Woods’ caddy “as I felt incredibly loyal to Tiger — this was the toughest time of his life and I wasn’t going to ditch him.
TIGER WOODS’ EXCADDY CLAIMS “HE TREATED ME LIKE SLAVE” Tiger Woods’s former caddie Steve Williams reveals all in his new autobiography, Out of the Rough Tiger finally rang me on March 23 (2010). He had already sent me an apologetic email when he was in rehab. It was heartfelt and meaningful; he was open, honest and remorseful and it reinforced my thinking that because I was so straight up and had such strong values, he felt he couldn’t tell me what was going on with his affairs.” Williams said that before resuming his 13year association with Woods he met with the golfer and presented a list of demands. Although working for Tiger had made him a reported $80mn and a household name “I
wanted him to prove to me he could change his behaviour and show me — and the game of golf — more respect,” he said. Williams said he often felt angry when Woods “would flippantly toss a club in the general direction of the bag, expecting me to go over and pick it up. I felt like a slave” During his career Woods won 13 of his 14 majors with Williams on his bag and by his side since his departure he has not won a major. Out of the Rough by Steve Williams is available at Booktopia.
Murray 2 - Goffin 0 WITH just three weeks to go before the pair are due to face each other at Ghent in the Davis Cup final, the Scot delivers a powerful 6-0, 6-1 message. It was probably the most one-sided match Murray has played against a top-40 player, and with little under three weeks to go before the paid meet again number two seed Andy Murray will defiantly feel he has the psychological advantage over his opponent. Belgian’s David Goffin recorded 22 unforced errors to Murray’s eight, with the Belgian failing to take a single break point while the Brit took five in the match which lasted just un-
der an hour. Knowing Goffin’s game ahead of the Davis Cup match and having already beaten him twice Murray must feel reasonable sure he has a chance however clay is the Scots worst surface of play on.
RUSSIA COULD FACE BAN FOR ATHLETIC DOPING THE IAAF will next week present its findings into claims of doping, cover-ups, and extortion within Russian athletics. French police confirm that the former head of world athletics Lamine Diack is being investigated for allegedly receiving payments from Russian athletes to cover up doping offences. Lamine Diack, 82, who was president of the IAAF from 1999 until earlier this year, was taken for questioning earlier this week and released on £350,000 bail and ordered to surrender his passport. In addition to Lamine Diack, two others are implicated in the cover
up and corruption scandal which the IAAF claims could be worse than that of FIFA, these include; Habib Cisse former IAAF legal advisor & Gabriel Dolle former IAAF medical and anti-doping director If these charges are found to be correct then the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) will propose action be taken against institutions complicit in the blackmail of dope cheats and will recommend that the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF) or Russian AntiDoping Agency (Rusada) be declared noncompliant and banned from partaking in athletic events.

Forty winks Chinese pundit Dong Lu was acting as co-commentator for LeTV’s coverage of the Real Madrid and PSG’s Champions’ League group stage match when he dozed off and began to snore live on air. The 20 year veteran began commentating on the match which was shown across Europe in the early evening but was shown in the early hours of the morning at 3:45am local time in China but during the 79th minutes fatigue seemed to get the better of him and with fans across China were serenaded by his dull snoring noises. Whilst fans took this lightly his employees did not and Dong Lu was fired with immediate effect.
Sportswoman of the Year Jessica Ennis-Hill World heptathlon champion has said that she will wait until after the Rio 2016 Olympics before she makes a decision on when she will retire from athletics. The 29-year-old will go to Brazil to defend her Olympic gold medal but it would be her last Olympic Games as she confirmed that by 2020 she would be too old to compete at a competitive level. So the question remains will she prolong her career to take part in the 2017 World Athletic Championships in London and bow out on hole soil or wills he retire after the Rio Games.. We’ll just have to wait and see!

FRENCH Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been charged with “complicity in an attempt to blackmail” his fellow team mate Mathieu Valbuena (right) and conspiring “to commit a criminal act” over an alleged sex tape. The sex tape scandal first came to the attention of the public’s back in July when Mathieu Valbuena decided to take legal action after being contacted by three men claiming to be in possession of a phone-recorded sex tape which allegedly involves sex footage of Valbuena. French police have over the course of the investigation interviewed several high profile footballers namely Djibril Cisse who from the start protested his innocence – charges were dropped against him when phone taps implicated Benzema came to the attention of the authorities. Following his arrest early last week Benzema admitted he had spoken to Valbuena about the tape on behalf of a childhood friend but stressed he had no part in the blackmail. A statement from the Versailles prosecutor said Benzema was now under formal investigation for complicity in attempted blackmail and participation in a criminal conspiracy which could carry a prison sentence of at least five years.

‘TYREGATE’ - WHY DID LEWIS HAMILTON QUESTION MERCEDES ORDERS IN MEXICO?
W
E all know Lewis Hamilton is his own man after all he fired his father and caused quite a lengthy delay in renewing his contract with Mercedes managing it himself. But challenging a team decision last week in Mexico and then flirting with the idea of ignoring it completely has piqued everyone’s interest. The drama began to unfold on Lap 47 Mercedes had secured
a sufficient gap over Daniil Kvyat in third place to be able to pit both cars for a new sets of medium tyres without losing track position. Mercedes were worried about tyre degradation but Hamilton close to his partner felt he had the opportunity to overtake and continue to the end of the race. Rosberg had pitted and as Hamilton was called in by his engineer he argued that he didn’t see the need to - The conversation is as follows:
Pete Bonnington: Ok Lewis, we are going to revert to plan B, let us know if you need a flap adjust Lewis Hamilton: Can I ask why? PB: We are worried about wear, with these tyres we were down to the canvas. So box this lap
The Red Bull saga continues R
ED Bull has extended their deadline to find an engine deal until after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. The former world champions who have suffered an appalling season primarily because of their fall-out with Renault who they blame have provided insufficient engines have warned that they will leave the sport at the end of the season unless they source a ‘competitive’ engine but currently no manufacturer can be found. Mercedes and Ferrari both formally rejected their request for a 2016 power supply, leaving only three options available for next season: reconciling with Renault, accepting a year old supply of Ferrari units or gambling on Honda. “We are working very hard to try to find a solution,” Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, told Sky F1. “Hopefully we will achieve that, unfortunately there are blockades whichever way you look but somehow we will find a way.” Whilst it appears that Red Bull have hit a wall at every corner their determination to find a solution to their current predicament must surely be interpreted as proof that the team are not willing to give up and simply walk away from F1. So what are their options? 1. WALK AWAY FROM F1 Unless an engine can be found this may be the only solution Dietrich Mateschitz, the owner of Red Bull and Toro Rosso, has repeatedly warned throughout 2015 he is prepared to withdraw both of his teams from F1 at the end of the year unless they had access to a
“competitive” supply of engines. Divorce papers were served to Renault three months ago because the team believed that Mercedes were ready to step in as engine suppliers. 2. LET BERNIE SORT IT OUT Bernie runs a tight ship and nothing goes on in F1 without his knowledge or rubber stamped approval – so should Red Bull decide to leave many think that Bernie will step in a demand a manufacture provide the team with an engine. He has already stated that Honda although currently providers to Maclaren they were allowed to join F1 under the understanding that they provide engines to three teams. At the time Honda stated they could not afford that so Maclaren have thus far have been lucky to get there sole attention but Bernie could use this loop hole to demand they provide Red Bull during the 2016 season until a suitable manufacturer can be found.
3. TRY AND REACH A COMPRIMISE WITH FERRARI Ferrari had agreed to offer Red Bull with exactly the same specification engine as the works team a 2015-spec Ferrari engine but this was rejected with Red Bull stating that to be competitive they need a 2016 spec engine? 4. RECONCILE WITH RENAULT Renault actually held the engine contract until the end of 2016 but given the public fallout it seems highly unlikely that Renault would be willing to return as engine suppliers. Although divorce papers have been served confirmation of the split has not been finalized or declared null and void so actually the team still has a contract in place. Renault would obviously demand a public apology which given the bad blood between the two may be the Achilles heel as neither Christian Horner, Team Principle or Dietrich Mateschitz may be willing to give this.
Hamilton ignored the request and drove passed the pit lane entry leaving the mechanics standing ready with the tyres out of blankets. PB: So Lewis you WILL be boxing next lap LH: You need to check his (Rosberg’s) tyres. My tyres are all good PB:So Lewis we were down to Zero on the first set – if we run longer on this set we will be down to zero if not worse so box at the end of this lap – Instruction. LH:I think that’s the wrong call, but I’m coming in. PB: Ok we’ll debate that later. After the stop Hamilton asked the team to check the wear as he still had doubts making a point he wasn’t going to let it lie and that he would be checking the tyres himself later. At the end of the race Hamilton was magnanimous and didn’t display the childish arrogance of Rosberg at the Singapore grand prix – He joined in Rosberg’s team celebration photo and played down the team orders issue, saying that the team had not yet explained the wear situation to him, but that he understood it was a safety issue. However he did say in the press conference, “There wasn’t much degradation on the tyres if any. At the time, I just didn’t agree with the decision to pit for a second time. The team takes these decisions and I abide by them but I initially wasn’t sure on this one.

Frankie goes to Flemington and gets banned
GIRL POWER F
RANKIE Dettori’s equal best performance in a Melbourne Cup has ended with a bit of a bump in the shape of a hefty fine and a one month ban. The flamboyant Italian jockey who finished second on Irish horse Max Dynamite behind 100-1 shot Prince Of Penzance ridden by Michelle Payne, has been hit with a $20,000 fine and one-month riding ban after he was found to have caused severe interference to Grand Marshal ridden by Jim Marshal, Gust Of Wind ridden by Chad Schofield and Preferment ridden by High Bowman. Dettori switched his mount out into the centre of track in the home straight after failing
to get a clear run on the far rail, a move which appeared to trigger multiple interference however, Dettori is adamant he was clear of Chad Schofield’s mount Gust Of Wind when he moved out to take a run. “I saw I was clear and I moved out,” he said. The five other jockeys disagreed “Do I get a prize for staying on?” said Jim Cassidy, the rider of Grand Marshal. After pleading guilty the stewards took Dettori’s good record into consideration but felt the interference was so ‘severe’ that a ban and fine were warranted Jamie Spencer, who came fifth on Big Orange, was also found guilty of careless riding and hit with a ban for 14 meetings.
MICHELLE Payne has become the first female jockey to win Australia’s 154-year-old Melbourne Cup riding to victory on 100-1 outsider Prince of Penzance to victory at Flemington. In a driving finish, Prince of Penzance powered home to hold off Ireland’s Max Dynamite with Criterion third for a shock win ahead of a star-studded field. The six-year-old gelding came into Australia’s biggest race without fanfare despite winning one of the lead-up races, the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, over a week ago.

Are Barcelona eyeing up Robin van Persie? S
PECULATION is rife that Barcelona is keen to sign former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie amid talks held over the player. Van Persie, 32, who left Old Trafford for Turkish side Fenerbahce in the summer, looks set to be moving to the Nou Camp. The La Liga side are keen to sign a seasoned striker to provide cover for the likes of Neymar, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, and it’s claimed that the Dutchman has been identified as the ideal candidate. It is believed that talks have already begun over a January move with Van Persie likely to be open to the idea of joining one of the best teams in the world.
Nadal turns the tables - just! SPANIARD Rafael Nadal was just a match point away from being beaten by the big-serving Kevin Anderson at the Paris Masters but somehow after digging deep he came alive late to score a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory helping him secure a quarter final place. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who has admitted to lacking confidence earlier in the year, seemed to struggle against the South African’s big serve in the fast indoor conditions and found himself down a match point in the second-set tiebreaker, but showed he still has the mental strength to turn it around by claiming that must-win point and going on to win the set. Seventh seeded Nadal, who reached the final of this event in 2007, will next now face fourth-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.
