Highlights from the 2014 Indiana Holstein Association Annual Meeting
T
he Indiana State Holstein Association met in Indianapolis on February 1st. Election results are; President, Nathan Kuehnert of Ft. Wayne, Vice President, Dru Mercer from Bryant, Secretary/Treasurer, Kim Myers and Steve Christman of New Paris, Directors, Roger Hibschman of Syracuse and Corey Craig of Fair Oaks. Member at Large, Geri Newman of Culver.
The 2014 State Holstein Show will be in Goshen this year from June 15th to 19th. Junior Show is Tuesday, Judge will be Julie Butler Hemp, and Wednesday evening there will be a Hog Roast and a Holstein Memorabilia Auction. Thursday, Marty Unholzer from Ontario will be judging the Open Show. This year entries are open to out of state exhibitors for a $50 membership fee for Exhibition only.
Special recognition awards were Honoary Lifetime Member, C.M. Bottema lll, of Indianapolis was on hand to accept his award from Dru Mercer who researched the legacy of Bottema Farms. Richard Thomas of Middlebury presented the Master Breeder Award to Dean Beer of Berne, Dru Mercer accepted on his behalf. Skylar Clingan of Orland is the President of the Indiana Junior Holsteins, he also won the Derek Blough Heart and Soul Award and the Hoosier Holstein Homemakers Scholarship. Anna Will of Poseyville is the 2014 Holstein Princess.

2014 Indiana Junior Holstein Annual Meeting
T
he 2014 Indiana Jr. Holstein annual meeting was held Saturday, February 1st. New officers were elected. Our President is Skylar Clingan, Vice President: Sabra Jackson, Secretary/Treasurer: AnnaMarie Settles, Reporter :Hayley Jackson. Our district officers are District 1: Julia Lipply, District II: Bryce Gingerich, District III: Rachel Jackson, District IV: Jackie Mudd, District V: Jodi Jones, and District VI: Briley Loggan. District at Large officers are Anne Achen, Kannani Price, Sydney Day, Bailey Craig, Laura Frye, Caitlyn Cox, Kaylee Godwin, Jessica McMahan, Carter Settles, Blaine Loggan, Madison Clingan, and Morgan Stone. The Derek Blough Heart and Soul Award is given to a Jr. Holstein member who has shown great herdsmanship and sportsmanship. This year the award was given to Skylar Clingan. Skylar was also awarded the the Hoosier Holstein Homemaker Scholarship of $500.

a Communication specialist for the IN University office of Sustainability. Anna volunteers for numerous youth and senior citizen organizations as well as, 4-H, FFA, Shelters and Food Banks. Anna enjoys showing at local, state and national shows, attending athletic events at IUB,being involved with Alpha Phi Omega and working with children and teenagers in an educational capacity. After graduation, Anna plans to become a Geneticist. She hopes to continue living in Southern Indiana, showing dairy cattle and raising a family of her own. Anna is looking forward to representing the Indiana Holstein Association as she competes for the 2014 Indiana Dairy Princess title.
The Indiana Holstein Princess Geri Newman presented the Contest Derek Blough Heart and Soul was Award to Skylar Clingan. held prior to the Junior meeting. After interviews and giving a 5 minute speech, Anna Will of Poseyville, Dist V., was crowned the 2014 Indiana Holstein Princess. Anna is the daughter of Terry & Nancy Will of Will Dairy Farm. Anna is a graduate of N. Posey H.S. and is attending Indiana UniversityBloomington where she plans to get her degree in Biology and Genetics. After receiving her Undergraduate degree she will obtain her Master’s Degree and possibly a PH.D. Anna Anna Will earned the 2014 works on the family farm as well as Indiana Holstein Princess title.

The 2014 Indiana State Show will be held at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds, Goshen Indiana. Tack and cattle can go in on Sunday, June 15. The Jr. Show
will be on Tuesday June 17th at 9:00a.m. The judge will be Julie Hemp. The open show will be on Thursday June 19th, and the judge is Marty Unholzer.

The 2014 Indiana State Fair theme is the “Year of the Coliseum”. Cattle can go in on Friday August 8th at 8:00 a.m. Tack only from 4-8 a.m. The 4-H show will be on Sunday August 10th at 8:00 a.m. The judge is Jeff Brown. The open show is on Wednesday August 13th at 8:00 a.m. Judging the show will be Pat Conroy. Cattle will be released after the shows are complete on Wednesday and must be out of the barn by Thursday the 14th.

Twelve Youth Named Michigan Dairy Ambassadors
T
welve dairy youth kicked off their year of dairy promotion and outreach as Michigan dairy ambassadors during the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference (GLRDC) in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. on February 7. Three high school junior dairy ambassadors – Mason Horning of Manchester, Evelyn Okkema of Blanchard and Libby Venema of Deford – and nine college senior dairy ambassadors – Megan Bush of Swartz Creek, Natalie Horning of Manchester, Kayle Jakus of St. Johns, Quinn Kolar of Troy, Jennie Lubbers of Lake Odessa, Laura Lubeski of Bad Axe, Allison Pung of Portland, Kailey Sweers of Dansville and Heather Van Lieu of Reading – spent the day training for their upcoming role as dairy advocates. Ambassadors participated in educational sessions covering topics ranging from media relations to social media while showcasing their passion for the dairy industry to a panel of judges. Throughout the year, the 12 reigning dairy ambassadors will be afforded further training as well as opportunities to represent the dairy industry during promotion and outreach events. In addition to training sessions, ambassadors competed for 14
scholarships and the titles of junior and senior Michigan dairy ambassador representative. Mason Horning, a sophomore at Manchester High School, was named the junior ambassador representative and was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Megan Bush, a junior at Michigan State University, and Kailey Sweers, a sophomore at Hope College, were announced as the senior ambassador representatives, each receiving a $1,500 scholarship. “The 12 candidates who participated in the 2014 Michigan Dairy Ambassador Program were remarkable young people, each of whom has a passion for agriculture and valuable knowledge of the state’s dairy industry. By combining these characteristics with the lessons learned throughout the training, the new ambassadors will be outstanding advocates for the Michigan dairy industry,” Jamie Wilson, training presenter and judge, commented.

The ambassador representatives were selected based on each ambassador’s application, professional introduction, interview and participation throughout the training. The GLRDC established the Michigan Dairy Ambassador Scholarship and Leadership Program in 2006. The program provides future young dairy leaders with an opportunity to develop communication, promotion and leadership skills while representing the dairy industry in person and online. Sherry encouraged all to keep up their memberships and to encourage others to get involved. Darwin Sneller shared the newest developments for the 2018 national convention. The main participants thus far on this committee are: Tom & Lynn Atherton, Moss & Renee McCauley, Darwin & Kathy Sneller and Richard & Pat Hyde. Kelli Dunklee was out to look at the two sites (Traverse City & Grand Rapids) and Holstein will make their decision at their March board meeting. Darwin encouraged members to get involved with the convention planning and he shared the different committees. Ike Hunt, sale committee chair, shared his sale report. Ike shared that the 2013 made some money but not as much as we would have liked; $2,160.50 was the average. Ike thanked the MSU Dairy Club for the hard work they put in. This year the committee got a jump start planning and committee hopes this will help with the bottom line. Currently there are 60 head consigned and the sale committee hopes to have near 75. District Reports: District 1: Darwin Sneller shared that district members enjoyed their annual summer picnic and it went well. District meeting was cdo you ancelled due to weather. Brent Moyer will be the District 1 representative to the board of directors. District 2: Hope Reister will serve on the board of directors. District 4: Gene VanRhee reported that Tammy VanHaitsma will be their representative to the board. District 6: Tom Atherton shared that they will have their annual sale on April 5 at Green Meadow Farms. District 7: Nick Clark reported that there were approximately 20 attendees at their district meeting. Tom Barends was chair for their 2013 show and it was a success. District 7 will have a sale on April 12, 2014. Tom Atherton, nominating committee representative, reported that Sherry Meyer is the nominee for president and Ike Hunt for vice president. Jess Jakubik is sole nominee for director at-large. Cheryl Strautz moved and Gene VanRhee supported motion to cast unanimous ballot for all positions. InMemoriam Randall “Randy” J. Hershberger May 5, 1959-Nov. 8, 2013 Wakarusa, Indiana Randall “Randy” J. Hershberger, 54, passed away unexpectedly at his home Friday.
He was born May 5, 1959 in Iowa City, Iowa to Kenneth and Virginia (Fisher) Hershberger. Even though he didn’t “live” there for long, he always said the he was FROM Iowa, followed by his silly “Randy” laugh, when people prompted more. He married the love of his life, Marcia Schrock, on July 30, 1988 at Holdeman Mennonite Church. She survives along with two daughters, Ellie and Abby, both at home. Also at home is his beloved beagle mix, Sadie. His mother, Virginia Hershberger, lives in Goshen; a sister, Barbara (Carl) Westerbeek, Goshen; and three brothers, Kevin (Susie) Hershberger, Mount Gilead, N.C., and Galen (Karen) Hershberger and John (Diana) Hershberger, both of Goshen. He joined his true hero, his father Kenneth, in heaven. His family was extremely important to him; he loved being a father, uncle, brother, son and husband. Randy was very involved as a member of Holdeman Mennonite Church. He served several terms as an Elder, and was a MYF sponsor for six years. He loved leading worship, and getting the chance to get a few laughs from the congregation. He loved to make people laugh. He enjoyed putting on skits and writing secret notes during church to his daughters and friends. He was very involved in 4-H, serving as a dairy director, and on the Elkhart County Holstein Association. He shared his passion for dairy cows with his daughters, and loved helping in the barn and participating in the latest dairy news with the young and old. A 1977 graduate of Northridge High School and a graduate of Lake Shore Technical Institute, Sheboygan, Wis., he worked in sales for Coach House Garages, which he really enjoyed because it gave him the opportunity to meet even more people. A devoted father and husband, Randy enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes and golf. Those were the things he told people he loved, but he really love ALL sports. He loved eating at the Farmer’s table at Raymond’s every morning. Randy embraced life, and lived each day to the fullest.
Elroy G. Miller
December 14, 1935 - December 15, 2013 Millersburg, Indiana Elroy G. Miller, 78, died Wednesday, December 15, 2013 at IU Health Goshen Hospital from complications from a fall last Friday. He was born Dec. 14, 1935 in Goshen, to Elmer E. and Ida (Nisley) Miller Yoder. He married Marie Gingerich Sept. 30, 1956, at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church in Goshen. She survives along with four children, Cheryl (Andy) Gall and Lavonne (Joe) Warstler, both of New Paris, Keith Miller, Millersburg, and Diane (Dustin) Lockwood, Goshen; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Harley Mast; three stepsisters, Cora Schrock, Susan Eash and Martha (Wilbur) Kauffman; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant children, Carla Dawn and Dana Lee Miller; sister, Laura Ellen Mast; brother, Eldon Miller; and granddaughter, Jessica Warstler. A lifelong area resident, Mr. Miller was a dairy farmer and milked his own cows up until his death at age 78. His prefix was “Elmyra”. In 2010 “Elmyra Greg Brunhilda” (Red) was Reserve Grand at the Minnesota State Fair. In 2007 “Elmyra Hero Crystal” was 1st place Junior 2-Year-Old at both the Mid-East and Mid-West National Spring Show. He was a lifelong, active member of Clinton Frame Mennonite Church and Dairy Farmers of America, where he had been a delegate for many years. He also served on the boards of Interra Credit Union and Clinton Union Cemetery.
Craig Eugene Sherban
July 19, 1952 - Jan. 28, 2014 South Whitley, Indiana Craig Eugene Sherbahn, 61, of South Whitley, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, January 28, 2014 at his home. He was born July 19, 1952. He graduated from South Whitley High School and received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education in 1974 and Masters of Animal Science degree in 1977 from Purdue University. In 1985 he began his employment with Farmers Elevator Company, now Ag Plus. He also assisted his parents with Sherbahn Auctioneer Services. On April 20, 1986 he was united in marriage to Pamela S. Eberly Nixon. They have always made their home in South Whitley. He was a member of South Whitley United Methodist Church; a member of Eel River Lodge #510 Free & Accepted Masons; active with 4-H activities including Whitley County 4-H Inc. where he served as President, Vice President and Secretary; organized & founded the Premier Stockman Lamb & Steer Classic in Columbia City for 20 years and originated & founded the Premier Stockman Judging Contest; served on Hoosier Beef Congress in Indianapolis from 1988 until 1999, former director of Indiana Sheep and Wool Council from 1995 until 1999, Indiana Dorset Association Breed Manager for Indiana State Fair from 1994 until 1999; a member of the 1974 Purdue Livestock Judging Team that won the National Barrow Show, North Central Regional Contest, American Royal and Chicago International, placing in top six individually; was Purdue Livestock Judging Team Advisory Board member from 1998 to 1999; Great Lakes Regional Dorset Show manager in 1997 and 1999; Whitley County Extension board member from 1985 to 1988; Whitley County Beef Club Advisory board member from 1984 to 1989; Cattle Barn Director of Indiana State Fair from 2000 until 2008 and on Executive Committee from 2001 to 2008. Surviving relatives include his wife, Pam; two children, Ted Nixon of South Whitley and Cari (Travis) Juillerat of Larwill; a grandson, Wyatt Nixon; and a brother, John (Jill) Sanders of Warsaw. His parents, Kenneth and Vera (Penrod) Sherbahn, preceded him in death. Preferred memorials are to Whitley County 4-H Inc. or Craig Sherbahn Scholarship Fund.
