A
s we all know, when the fall harvest is approaching time is valuable, so anything that can help save time is a blessing. If you currently use genetic data and genomics in your herd, then be sure to check out Enlight. Enlight is a new management tool designed to help Holstein producers effectively manage their genetics. Enlight is a web-based program, accessible on a computer or tablet, and is the result of an alliance between Holstein Association USA and Zoetis. This program makes the process of obtaining and utilizing your genetic data quick and efficient. There is no charge to enroll in Enlight, therefore any producer who has genomic tested an animal is eligible to use the program. All genomic samples submitted by Enlight users will be analyzed using Clarifide, a DNA-marker technology for optimizing selection and management of dairy animals. If you have questions about Enlight or would like to enroll
please contact Max Dunseth at 269-251-0232, or Sarah at 608.628.1978. As always, thank you for your business.

Fall 2014
From the President’s Pen Sherry Meyer Michigan Holstein Association President
F
all greetings from the Michigan Holstein Association. So many exciting things have been happening that I felt it was necessary to share these with you in the magazine. I felt this was a practice we needed to bring back. While our membership numbers may be down, the Michigan Holstein Association Board of Directors has pledged to continue to provide an active and viable organization to our members. We just wrapped up a highly successful summer show and are already in the planning stages for our two state shows next year. The dates have been set for the Great Lakes Spring Show to be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015. The quality of cattle you bring out continue to be phenomenal. Our Sale Committee has committed itself to another Spring Sale just like the high caliber one they held this spring, the date for that sale will be March 27. The Membership Committee is accepting entries for this year’s member photo contest. There are prizes for the winner! District meetings are scheduled for January 22-24, and we are currently finalizing arrangements for our speaker. The Board has also decided to host a picnic for next summer, and is just beginning to explore all the possibilities for this activity. Last but certainly not least, we are at the very beginning planning stages of the 2018 National Holstein Convention. The convention will be held at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme which is just outside of Traverse City. As you can see it’s an exciting time to be involved in the Michigan Holstein Association. If any of these activities appeal to you, feel free to contact any of the Board or our Secretary, Suzanne Tuttila, to see how you can join in the fun! Have a safe and bountiful harvest! Respectfully,
For semen contact:

MHA Sale Committee Report Ike Hunt Michigan Holstein Association Sale Chairperson
T
he sale committee has decided that the 2014 Spring Foundation Sale went off pretty well, so the 2015 MHA Spring Foundation Sale will be run in the same way. We are working to get the same auctioneer and pedigree reader back. We have a commitment from the fitter to be back again next spring. We are waiting to hear if the MSU Dairy Club will be helping again. We are looking forward to pulling together another great sale. The 2015 sale will mark our third year as acting sale manager, and each year we’ve made the sale profitable for the association and for breeders. The folks on the sale committee did a great job on getting consignments last spring and the cattle sold pretty well. A good portion of the sale animals showed up in the show the next morning, which says a lot for the quality of the consignments. The 2015 MHA Spring Foundation Sale will be March 27th at the MSU Livestock Pavilion. As we get closer to that date, the sale committee members will be looking for consignments of quality cattle that anyone would be proud to run through their milking parlor, or have stand in their tie stall barn, or even have their high tech fancy robot take care of everyday. One problem we may have is, with high milk prices and record cull cow prices, how do we get registered Holstein breeders to consign their “best” cattle to our sale? My answer would be, consign your “best” and then come to the sale and buy someone else’s “best” to take home to fill that spot that your “best” left empty. Thanks and keep our sale date circled on your calendar. Respectfully, Ike Hunt, MHA Sale Chairperson 14
