Something whimsical happens every spring in the city of Salzburg in Markus-
Sittikus-Strasse 20. While the city awakes from its hibernation, the ground
in a corner of the garden of the Markus Sittikus Hotel opens up and a small, wrinkled little head pokes its nose out into the fresh air. Rosamunde, the turtle, has awakened and welcomes the first warm rays of sun with the kind of serenity that only an animal that has seen many a spring can have.
R
osamunde is old, surely as old as the hotel, and that’s already close to an impressive 50 years. She has seen a lot during her time, including the purchase of the hotel by the Sigl family 25 years ago and the take-over by today’s manager Anna Sunshine Sigl in 2008. Yet she still strides through her small garden empire, slowly and majestically as always, as befits a Greek king turtle. Does Rosamunde even know how historically signficant the name of the hotel, in whose garden she resides, is? In Salzburg, Markus Sittikus is a name that conjures up notions of originality. Sittikus was the Prince-archbishop of Salzburg in the 17th century and erected some of the city’s largest sights, which wow countless guests from all over the world with their charm, wit, and perso-
nality. Probably the most famous of all sights are the trick fountains in Hellbrunn, which are sure to cool their visitors down (whether they like it or not). Then again, Rosamunde has never been that far away from her hotel. She has more of a homey personality and knows how beautiful the Andräviertel is. The hotel is located in the heart of this hot and hip district, home to the art, student, and cultural scene of Salzburg. Even though Mirabell Palace, Salzburg Congress Center, the spa house, and the central station are only be a few steps away, things are always nice and quiet for Rosamunde as the hotel is located in a cozy back road. Her garden is widely recognized as one of the city’s most beautiful hotel gardensIt won’t be long
–4–
before you see her lying in the warm sun simply relaxing with other hotel guests. By the by, she has seen many guests in her long life – regulars and weekend guests, business clients, and tourists who simply want to enjoy Salzburg’s beauty. If Rosamunde could understand what the visitors are saying, she’d probably be proud to live at Hotel Markus Sittikus and to be part of the Markus Sittikus family. First and foremost, the warm and friendly service of the staff guarantees something even Rosamunde appreciates – comfort and time out, and the knowledge that everything around you works and is taken care of. Since turtles prefer to live outdoors, she has rarely seen the inside of the house, but she certainly
would like it inside as much as in her small garden empire. The hotel’s furnishings have something that Rosamunde particularly appreciates, namely charm and personality. If she happened to stride across the threshold on an extended stroll, she would definitely be impressed by the entrance hall of Hotel Markus Sittikus, as it captures the style of the entire hotel: hunter’s green Biedermeier sofa, golden mirrors, fur lamps, and colorful walls and pillows would await her. And since Rosamunde loves colorful, inventive things, she would especially like the individually themed rooms with names such as “Sound of Music” “Room of Blossoms” or, as one might expect, “Markus Sittikus.” They have been lovingly designed with an eye for detail by manager Anna Sigl herself and capture the imagination with their interiors.
The only thing missing is a Rosamunde room, but this may happen yet. Rosamunde has a lot of time and will see a lot more springs in her garden at Hotel Markus Sittikus in Salzburg.

VILLA CARLTON Question: What’s a boutique hotel? Answer: Villa Carlton is a boutique hotel. We’ll explain why it’s called that, what’s so special about it, and what the difference is between Hotel Villa Carlton and a design or lifestyle hotel in greater detail on these two pages.
A
ccording to the dictionary, the original French word boutique means “small shop.” In connection with the term fashion boutique, the meaning of a boutique hotel becomes clearer: the exclusivity and individuality of the interior emanating from the owner and the charm of the establishment per se.
This fulfills the categories that the international union of hoteliers requires to meet the definition of a boutique hotel. According to this definition, the hotel needs to be run by the proprietor, have an authentic and historic background, and must be individually furnished.
When Anna Sunshine Sigl, manager of Hotel Markus Sittikus, had the opportunity to open a hotel in the rooms of the historic Cecconia villa in Salzburg’s Markus-Sittikus-Strasse 2 in early 2010, the creative lady got busy right away. Within the space of a few months, she reconstructed, renovated, and designed the villa from scratch, filling it with new glamour, conviviality, individual style, and lively pop art.
And Hotel Villa Carlton certainly gets full marks for individuality. While the entire first floor is kept in royal blue colors, the fourth floor, the so-called “Klimbim” floor, brings Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe to life with glitter decor, pop art, and exquisite furniture. This kind of setting isn’t just unique to Salzburg. This special design is anything but ordinary, of course, but can be found in many other design or
–6–
lifestyle hotels. But what sets Villa Carlton apart from those, and what makes it a boutique hotel? The answer lies in Anna’s vision, which she summed up at the beginning of the reconstruction work in a brief sentence: „I want to create a hotel where my guests don’t just feel at home, but where they truly are at home. I want to create a hotel that has a soul.“ And she certainly managed to achieve her goal on the historic premises of Villa Cecconi, which was originally built in 1900 as the summerhouse for a Viennese family. In her inimitable way, Anna
managed to blend the atmosphere of the historic walls and Secession architecture with her own style to form an “avant-garde yet linear design mix straddling Salzburg baroque and pop art,” as an Austrian magazine put it ever so fittingly. In order to breathe new life into the building, Anna relies on her service personnel, who not only know each and every one of the numerous regulars by name, but also make every single guest feel like regulars themselves.
vidual ideas unique for Salzburg, which show guests the city from a rather unusual perspective. During the warm months of the year, genuine roadsters and picnic baskets can be hired for excursions while a shuttle services takes guests from right outside the boutique hotel’s door to the next ski region in winter.
Moreover, the hotel’s services are enhanced by indi-

Alexander Kurz, agent for the most beautiful estates in and around Salzburg Hotel Villa Carlton is regarded as the most impressive example of Jakob Ceconi’s work. The architect, who was mainly active in Salzburg, lived from 1857 to 1922 and designed a series of buildings that left their mark on Salzburg’s cityscape – including such famous constructions as the Spängler banking house with Café Bazar. There are many other properties at the home of the Salzburg Festival that were erected by the creative hands of the architect, who was born in Friuli. Every once in a while, one of them is offered for sale. KR. Alexander Kurz has a few stories to tell about them. His estate agency regularly brokers apartments in buildings, sometimes even complete villas, by Jakob Ceconi. (686/711) The estate agency Alexander Kurz is well established as a broker for beautiful, upmarket estates in Salzburg, the Salzkammergut, and beyond, including objects of historical importance, which are often prestigious, family-friendly, and cozy at the same time. However, it doesn’t matter whether you’re looking for a villa or an apartment in a prime city location
or a country house, castle, or lakeside estate in the Salzkammergut – Alexander Kurz usually has them all. Farmhouses for romantic nature aficionados are just as much part of his portfolio as private hunting grounds and forest estates from around 120 to over 800 hectares. Those looking for something special need to chat with the experienced estate expert. Hardly anyone knows the local real estate market as well as he does. With more than 40 years of experience, this legally certified authority knows about his clients’ wishes and how to fulfill them with the utmost discretion.

Summer in Salzburg is the Salzburg Festival season. The city becomes the heart of Austria, full of art and cultural events on every corner. As Max Reinhardt once said referring to this time in Salzburg, „The whole city is a stage“. This quote describes exactly what the Festival season is about. Act I: A concert in the Big Festival Hall (Großes Festspielhaus) as an afternoon cultural appetizer. Act II: Enjoy the Opera in the “Felsenreitschule”. Act III: Fine wining and dining in one of the many go-to restaurants the city has to offer. Act IV: A nightcap to full end the evening over the rooftops of Salzburg. If this short insight is too general for your liking or if you need more information on where, who, how, and
spring
when; the receptionists of Hotel Markus Sittikus and Villa Carlton are more than happy to help in providing more detailed information.
Springtime in Salzburg differs itself from the spring in other cities. Some would even argue that it is even better than other cities. But who knows, why not form your own opinion? In Hotel Markus Sittikus and Villa Carlton there is a wonderful way of doig just this: Enjoy for a biking tour with Vintage bicycle rentals and a picnic basket to go. Discover the beauty of Salzburgs nature for yourself!

„M
y goal was to create accessories, that alternative Berlin hipsters would love but also at the same time a style that speaks conservative aristocrat!“, says the go-getting designer and Hotelière, Anna Sunshine Sigl whilst presenting the ambivalent alignment of her collection. Black-and-white, silver-gray, dark blue and red: these are the colors in which the accessories available. The shoes, clutches and belts made of velvet leather and ensure an absolute wow factor, regardless in which context they are worn. Anna Sunshine Sigl’s idea for the collection came along as an idea for her Hotel Staff: stylish shoes with the Villa Carlton logo on it. „From the be-
ginning I was so excited that in the first draft I made a whole Collection, consisting of not just shoes, but also belts and clutches.“ The Velvet
Slippers are made by hand and are exclusively made of high-quality materials such as leather and cotton.
„My requirement for the quality of materials used is high, a shoe must fit and support, it should feel like a second skin!“
The designs are part of her individual style and can be unmistakably found throughout the collection again and again. Whoever decides to snatch one of these most precious pieces will enjoy an exclusive element of surprise: Along with the trendy slippers come two Shoe bags with the buck „bocky“ logo, to ease your storage worries.
Tips! Combining the modern Neo-Dandy the black / white „Le Huaf“ with dark slim fit trousers and a white shirt, fit for an everyday life kind of look. In the evening make your smoking and fly attire look like perfection. Ladies can wear bold, „Le Huaf“, „Le Peitsch“ and „Le Swagbag“ day and night in the same color combination to plain Jeans and blouse in plain for an absolute wow factor. Festivals celebrating the dandy lady in scarlet, Le Huaf Club ‚Velvet slippers in combination with the little black dress are exactly the go to on any occasion.
