FEATURE STORY
Fueled by Sunterra BY ARIANNE JONES
Sunterra is proud to announce our sponsorship of Arianne Jones, member of the Canadian National Luge Team. Arianne is a born and raised Calgarian who spends her summers training and her winters competing all over the world.
M
y name is Arianne Jones, I am a luge athlete who competed in the 2014 Olympics. Or in other words; a professional tobogganer! Here is a bit of my story: I am the smallest luge athlete on the world cup circuit, and I always have been. Luge is a gravity sport where size equals speed, so you can see how this has posed a few challenges for me along the way. As a child growing up in this sport I was always told, “You are too small, you're never going to make it,” coupled with “eat more.” So I ate more. I tried to gain the much needed athletic size to help me in this sport that I had chosen. Unfortunately, on my path of eating more, I ate more of the wrong things for my body. In the year before the 2014 Olympics I was getting sick at least every month. Colds,
flus, pneumonia; you name it, I got it. We can all agree, this is not an ideal state to be in while trying to compete for the Olympic team. As an athlete my body is my job, and my body’s fuel is food. My fuel was clearly broken. With the help of a nutritionist I overhauled my entire diet. I fixed my fuel, upgraded its quality, and not surprisingly my engine ran better! As famously quoted by Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine.” Within a few months of big diet changes I was no longer getting sick. I was stronger, healthier, and had more energy than I ever had before. The power of food and nutrition had shown me its power, and it was shocking! I used this new-found energy and strength as my advantage. I overcame all obstacles in my way and I proudly competed at the Olympics for my country. I had shown everyone along

the way who told me I was never going to make it. I had shown them that I wasn't going to let their opinions of me define my destiny. With an incredible amount of hard work, perseverance and courage, I had even proven to myself what I am capable of. In life, the path ahead is always full of unknowns and obstacles. Little would I know that a year after the Olympics I would break my back and once again have to rely on food and nutrition to help my body heal. But that’s a story for another time. To compete at the highest level of athletics I need a team of partners behind me. They allow me to focus on training my hardest, recovering properly and competing to my fullest potential. They stand next to me every step of the way on the journey to achieving my goals and dreams. Sunterra Market is a part of that team. They have partnered with me so that I can continue to fuel my body with the best quality fresh ingredients and foods. Cheers to Sunterra for keeping me strong and healthy with the fresh, wholesome foods. Check out one of my favourite summer lunch recipes on the next page: a green power lunch panini. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Arianne starts each day with a tall glass of lemon water and a green tea.
Plan ahead. Arianne plans her meals each week, making sure she gets enough protein and healthy snacks like veggie bundles with hummus and homemade (read: sugarfree) granola bars. Think vitamins and minerals. Arianne eats a wide variety of veggies (and puts chia, hemp and flax seeds in everything!) in order to get a broad range of nutrients.
