Not only from the area restaurants that have been named, but also services such as various aspects of the community to include; pet services, pharmacy, auto mechanic and even the "Best Caregiver" in a retirement setting. "It's all about what these many businesses do for all of us," Dane said. "This was a lot of fun, and the owners and employees of the businesses were very receptive and pleased." Sink or Sail at Hollywood’s Cardboard Boat Races By Kris Rebar, Public Relations Coordinator HOLLYWOOD - Fall is upon us and in Hollywood, the smell of cardboard and duct tape fills the air! That can only mean one thing…it’s time for the City of Hollywood’s annual Cardboard Boat Race! The City of Hollywood Marina’s 5th Annual Cardboard Boat Race will be held Saturday, October 5. Each year, a cheerful crowd gathers at the Marina to watch racers paddle across the waters of North Lake in their cardboard creations. Get your team together and sign up today.
Boats may be built ahead of time or onsite. The marina supplies cardboard for boats built on-site and teams bring the paint, duct tape, creativity and manpower. Boat building begins at 8 a.m. and must be completed by noon. Once all the cardboard vessels are constructed, the test of each team’s handiwork begins. The racing of the cardboard boats begins at 1 p.m. and continues until the last boat finishes or the crew is rescued. Aside from first, second and third place, teams compete for “Most Spectacular Sinking,” “Most Innovative Design” and
“Most Team Spirit” honors. This year, spectators will have a chance to vote for the winner of a new category, “People’s Choice.” Boats built offsite are not eligible for “Most Spectacular Sinking” honors. This event celebrates Hollywood’s waterways, marine lifestyle and the environment. The Hollywood Marina has won several awards from the state of Florida and marine organizations the past few years for its cleanliness and the quality of its waterways. The marina provides dock space, fuel and pumpout services and features boat launch ramp

and a review of the CRA’s land bank. Over the past years the CRA had been listing 42 lots that were owned by CRA without a complete inventory of lot sizes. Nine lots have been set aside for the Foster Gateway Project and 12 for infill housing with 21 left for future projects or disposition. The reference to 42 lots lead many residents to believe that all lots were buildable and were all directly purchased. Many of the lots land banked were actually escheated to the city from the county. This means basically they were donated with the caveat they were to be used for affordable housing. A list of properties was given to the city by the county and simply accepted into the city inventory. Land banking within CRAs is quite common. The goal is to assemble lots to spur redevelopment projects. A prime example of this practice is our Foster Gateway project which is now out for RFP. Over the years land was purchased for a specifically for this project. The CRA requested proposals to develop the land in partnership with the CRA. In the case of Foster Gateway the CRA went through this process as land values were increasing and the housing mar-
ket was at its peak. Timing is critical as everyone knows. The RFP was awarded to Pinnacle Development to build a mix use affordable housing project and then the market crashed. Pinnacle asked to build affordable rentals rather than owner occupied units since the market was no longer there. The Palms residents were opposed so the project was cancelled. The land has sat dormant until last year. As the market was rebounding the board prioritized getting the RFP out. The RFP is very open and competitive. The BOD is in a cone of silence now since it is out to bid. Staff will evaluate the proposals and then make recommendations to the BOD. The deadline for responses is the end of the month. Other lots that have been land banked fall in a few categories; too small to build on, buildable but are adjacent to other parcels owners do not want to sell, land locked or suitable to build. The 21 CRA lots that are left have a value at 780,000 combined. Last year the BOD approved an RFP to build single family homes on twelve of the lots. The contract was awarded to two developers. One is ready to pull permits and the other is still in the
process of acquiring a surety bond or a performance guarantee. After the presentation staff was given a few directives. First was to complete title searches on every property. Concerns were raised over the escheated properties that were automatically transferred. Staff is to speak with the property appraiser’s office to insure the current values are in line with today’s realities. In cases where adjacent properties owners do not want to sell unbuildable lots to the CRA staff was told to make sure owners are aware that the CRA’s offer to buy will not remain on the table for ever. All lots need to be posted for availability through the CRA. Small lots will also be offered to adjacent property to expand their lots. The BOD confirmed that where possible to offer land swaps in order to combine parcels. In addition a listing of lots be placed on line complete with addresses, lot size current value and summary of activity. The presentation of CRA activities covered all past and current activities within the CRA in 4 categories Business Incentives, Residential Incentives, Housing and Real-estate and Miscellaneous which includes internal operational functions,
grant programs and community partnerships. Looking forward a list of the following activities planned in the near future included; demolition of 501 NW 1st Avenue, evaluation & award of RFP for development proposals for Foster Rd/Dixie Hwy site, evaluation & award of RFP Affordable Housing Services, roll out of new CRA Website, Fashion Row Phase II, Quarterly Financial Reports, conveyance of lots to the City for the new Fire Station, completion of the Land Development Regulations for the Regional Activity Center. The CRA Board of Directors and staff continue to look to improvements to our operations and policies to insure we are delivering the best service in the most open transparent and efficient manor. The agenda included an item to discuss a new streamline policy and guideline manual. Due to the length of the meeting and long debate the BOD decided to continue the item to our next regular meeting. Romantic Italian singer Patrizio Buanne will charm any audience at Broward Center By Eleanor Hannan Patrizio’s “Italian songbook” and his European approach and interpretation of International and American standards has become his trademark, for which he was given the title of “The Ambassador Dolce Vita.” He began participating in talent contests at age 11, winning every talent contest he entered and has been singing for as long as he can remember. After several small musical productions and gigs, with his own teen age rock and roll band, he became a solo performer. Known as “the world’s most exciting baritone crooner,” Patrizio has the extreme ability to convey true emotion with his vocalizations from: “Mambo Italiano” and “Americano” to great American classics as: “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Crazy,” and “Have You Ever Loved a Woman.” Inspired by singing celebrities: Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, this young, handsome Italian singer has already won over many fans as he enthralls listeners, with his smooth, graceful, defining voice and polished showmanship. On his new album, recorded in Hollywood’s Capitol Studios with Humberto Gatica,
and in London with Brian Rawlings, Buanne’s record also contains his vocals with some of the classiest players in pop while remaining true to his role as an ambassador of Italian songs. In one of the greatest turnabouts in Rock and Roll history, the group JAY AND THE AMERICANS, started by four teenage boys in Sandy Yaguda’s Brooklyn basement 40 years ago, have bought back their rightful name in federal court, restoring the name to it’s rightful owners. Very few bands have ever reached the musical heights of JAY AND THE AMERICANS. From 1962—1971, this group charted an unprecedented “12” top 10 records. With three original band members, Sandy Yaguda (aka Deane) founding member, Howie Kirschenbaum (aka Kane) original member, and Marty Kupersmith (aka Sanders), original member, plus the addition of “Jay” Reincke, the third Jay and probably the best yet, .. they have recreated the authentic sound of all of . . their great hits that everyone remembers. JAY AND THE AMERICANS first record was “TONIGHT” (from the Broadway Musical WEST SIDE STORY), and their breakout hit song was “SHE CRIED”. JAY AND THE AMERICANS next chart hit was “ONLY IN AMERICA”, followed by top ten hits “COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER” and .later “THIS MAGIC MOMENT”? Where were you when you first heard “CARA MIA”? JAY AND THE AMERICANS pay tribute to the late ROY ORBISON with “CRYING”, and no other band in history has sold . more copies of the song “SOME ENCHANTED EVENING” than JAY AND THE AMERICANS!!! NEIL DIAMOND ‘s first hit song released, “SUNDAY AND ME”, was recorded by none other than JAY AND THE AMERICANS, who have toured with such legendary artists as ROY ORBISON, THE BEATLES, and THE ROLLING STONES. JAY AND THE AMERICANS were a major force in starting the Rock and Roll revival with their album “WAX MUSEUM”, where they paid tribute to many great Rock and Roll artists with their versions of such great songs as “HUSHABYE”, “WALKIN’ IN THE RAIN”, and a song that reached the top ten “THIS MAGIC MOMENT”. You will hear all of these songs, which are featured in the new JAY AND THE AMERICANS’ show. In 2002, JAY AND THE AMERICANS were inducted into the VOCAL GROUP HALL OF FAME, placing them among the greatest vocal groups in Rock and Roll history.

It's time to finally make that important dental implant decision
Natural teeth and dental implants may look the same, feel the same, and even function in a similar way, but they are very different.
HOLLYWOOD - You have put off getting dental implants for long enough. The price has always been too high - or you just do not know enough about them to make that life-changing decision. What ever barriers there were in the past are now put to rest as Dr. Richard Silver and his associates at Elite Dental Practice in Hollywood offer a way to make you look and feel better. With a FREE implant consultation, Dr. Silver can now help you make those changes for as little as $999 (regular $1,500) and crowns for as little as $799. "The one thing that we find out in dentistry these days is that patients are never explained the many options they have," Dr. Silver and his associates point out. "When you come in and talk with us, you leave more informed and ready to make that next step." While many dentists continue to offer implants, actually sitting down and explaining all facets of the procedure, is not something that is routine. Dr. Silver and his associates have spent a career on
making sure that their patients understand everything. DENTAL IMPLANTS A dental implant is a prosthetic replacement for a missing tooth. Natural teeth consist of the crown and the root. The crown is the visible section that is covered with white enamel. Supporting the crown is the tooth root which extends into the jawbone. The root is the part of the tooth that is effectively replaced by an implant. There are commonly three parts to what is described as an implant - the implant device itself (which is inserted directly into the bone); the abutment - the piece that connects the implant device to the third part - the overlying crown or denture. Today's implants are predominantly made of titanium, a metal that is bio-compatible and offers strength and durability as well as a unique property of fusing directly to bone the process known as osseointegration. Other materials, such as zirconium, might be used to make implants in the future. But for now, these materials have not been perfected for general use.
PATIENT TESTIMONIALS "After searching for a caring, compassionate, conscientious, and competent dentist, I finally found Elite Dental Center. Not only has Dr. Richard Silver continually provided stateof-the-art treatment but he responds promptly to emergency situations with phone calls, as well as with follow-up appointments. Dr. Silver is unique among dentists. He really cares about his patients, taking time to fully explain all the treatment procedures that are to be performed in an easily understandable way. If all dentists were like Dr. Silver there would be no dental phobia in America and appreciably less visits to the dentist," says Hugh B. "Dr. Silver is just great. A friend recommended him to me, and it took only one appointment for me to switch to him from my old dentist. He did an outstanding job filling a cavity my old dentist had done a terrible job on. And he did what's certainly the best cleaning job I've had in years. In all, he's extremely thorough, meticulous, careful, and knowledgeable. On top of that, he's a super nice guy -- funny and easy going (yet very professional). The staff is just as nice and helpful. I highly recommend him,” says Raul S. "Dr. Silver is efficient and runs on time. I really appreciate that of him. I don't have to wait a long time to get an appointment either. His staff is courteous and Dr. Silver cares about patients and dentistry," says Patricia D.
DENTAL IMPLANTS VS. CONVENTIONAL DENTURES Implants can be used to replace one missing tooth so that the replacement looks and feels natural. Also, two or more implants can serve as a stable support for the replacement of many teeth. Many patients who have selected dental implants describe a quality of life that is much more comfortable and secure than the lifestyle endured by those with fixed bridges or removable dentures. Dentures often make a person feel and look older than they are, cause embarrassment in social situations when they slip and click, and restrict the everyday pleasure of eating comfortably. When they count the benefits they enjoy as a result of their dental implants, patients say their implants eliminate the day-to-day frustrations and discomfort of ill-fitting dentures. They allow people to enjoy a healthy and varied diet without the restrictions many denture wearers face. With a sense of renewed self-confidence, many people rediscover the excitement of an active lifestyle shared with family and friends and the chance to speak clearly and comfortably with co-workers. For all these reasons, people with dental implants often say they feel better... they look better... they live better. AM I A CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS? Generally speaking, if you have lost teeth you are a candidate for dental implants. It is important that you are in good health, however, as there are some conditions and diseases that can affect whether dental implants are right for you. For example, uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, radiation to the jaws, smoking, alcoholism, or uncontrolled periodontal (gum) disease may affect whether dental implants will fuse to your bone. It is important to let your dental surgeon know all about your medical status (past and present) together with all medications you are taking, whether prescribed, alternative (herbal) or over-the-counter. Where and how implants are placed requires a detailed assessment of your overall stomatognathic system
tory response to bacterial biofilm of the tissues surrounding the implant, which can result in disintegration of the bone to the implant. All major insurance plans and credit cards are accepted. If you don’t have dental insurance, no problem, they will work out a payment plan with you. Walk-Ins are Welcome! Languages spoken: English, Russian, Spanish, Hebrew.

• What ever barriers there were in the past are now put to rest as Dr. Richard Silver and his associates at Elite Dental Practice in Hollywood offer a way to make you look and feel better (“stoma” – mouth; “gnathic” – jaws), within which the teeth function. This will necessitate compiling records that include study models of your mouth and bite, and specialized radiographs (x-rays), which may include 3D scans known as computerized tomograms (CT scans). Planning with the help of computer imaging ensures that dental implants can be placed in exactly the right position in the bone. HOW DO IMPLANTS DIFFER FROM TEETH? Natural teeth and dental implants may look the same, feel the same, and even function in a similar way, but they are very different. The most important differences are in the way they attach to the surrounding bone, their response to dental disease, their maintenance, and repair. Teeth attach to the surrounding bone by a periodontal ligament (“peri” – around; “dont” – tooth) made up of collagen fibers that join into the tooth on one side and bone on the other. Dental implants fuse directly to the bone. The gum tissues also attach to the root of a tooth with collagen fibers as described above. However, gum tissues can only stick to the surface of dental implants.

The future of Prostate Cancer treatment is here now (BPT) - Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among men in the United States. In fact this year alone, an estimated 240,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and over 28,000 men are estimated to die from the disease. Recent advancements in screenings and detection for prostate cancer have resulted in more men being diagnosed at an earlier age. These statistics solidify the need to create awareness with men and their families about the importance of early detection and innovative treatments available for this disease. Prostate cancer survivor and advocate, Isadore Wayne of St. Louis, Missouri, was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 46 in 2002. After undergoing a series of
treatments over several years for his own prostate cancer, including a radical prostatectomy and hormone therapy, Wayne’s cancer recurred and spread beyond the prostate. His oncologist then prescribed PROVENGE® (sipuleucel-T), a breakthrough treatment option designed to train the body’s immune cells to seek and attack prostate cancer cells. FDA-approved for certain men with advanced prostate cancer, PROVENGE is the first and only immunotherapy approved in the U.S. that uses the body’s own immune system to fight prostate cancer. Each dose of PROVENGE is made specifically for each patient and consists of immune cells that have been activated to seek and attack prostate cancer cells.
Isadore received his first infusion of PROVENGE in September 2011 and successfully completed treatment about one month later. As a result, he now dedicates much of his time to educating his local community about the disease through a network of support groups. “Thanks to my friends, family and healthcare team, I’ve been able to fight my prostate cancer with the help of my own body,” says Wayne. For men like Wayne who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, awareness of recent research is vital to having an open discussion with a physi-
cian. Wendy Poage, president of the Prostate Conditions Education Council, encourages men with advanced prostate cancer to discuss their treatment options and advancements. “Immunotherapy offers cancer patients a different approach to treatment,” says Poage. “With such favorable data on immunotherapies emerging, I’m certain the future of cancer treatment is here now.” Awareness and education about prostate cancer are the best tools to fight against the disease. Encourage the men in your
life to speak with a physician and become better educated about breakthrough treatment options like PROVENGE. PROVENGE Indication and Safety Information PROVENGE is an autologous cellular immunotherapy for the treatment of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic castrate resistant (hormone refractory) prostate cancer. PROVENGE can cause serious reactions including those resulting from the infusion of the drug, which occur within 1 day of infusion, and strokes. Severe infusion reactions can in-
clude chills, fever, fatigue, weakness, breathing problems, dizziness, headache, high blood pressure, muscle ache, nausea, and vomiting. The most common side effects reported with PROVENGE in clinical trials were chills, fatigue, fever, back pain, nausea, joint ache and headache. These are not all the possible side effects of PROVENGE treatment. For more information, please talk with your doctor. For full prescribing information, visit http://www.provenge .com or call Dendreon on call at 1877-336-3736.

Dealing with the Sociopath By Dr. Ron Q…Dear Dr Ron…, what does it mean to be a sociopath? Are they all career criminals? Are they capable of real human emotions like love?... S.J… N. Miami Beach A…The most distinguishing feature of a true sociopath is one who lacks any remorse, or conscience for the hurtful actions they inflict unto others. Sociopaths are not necessarily sadistic, although many may be, but rather truly selfish and shark-like, always attempting to fulfill their need for pleasure albeit at anyone’s expense…For these predators, people are just opportunities waiting to be exploited. Public awareness of sociopathic behavior is usually obtained through the media via sensational news reports of serial killers like Ted Bundy, or Jeffrey Dahmer. What most people don’t realize; however, is that sociopaths can also be law-abiding citizens, sometimes even with high status in their communities, and commit their harm perfectly within the confines of the law. Sociopaths can successfully function in the form of ruthless businessmen, heartless slumlords, unethical lawyers…, and even lying politicians. They are almost always abusive to anyone foolish enough to get intimately involved with them. Sociopaths may be hard to detect. They are masters at the art of manipulation, gaining people’s confidence with calculated, but intoxicating charm. Often by the time you realize who or what you are dealing with…, it is too late… As far as whether sociopaths can feel and express true love is a matter of debate. Even the worst of the lot may have an idealized person they claim to love and have never harmed. Probably this will be their mother, or a pet…, someone they can put on a special pedestal, for which they use as a symbolic reference for self justification. “Yup, I stole every last cent from my grandmother, killed a couple of guys for a buck, and bombed an orphanage…, but I always made sure my cats were fed”….. Bravo… And of course there will be some well intentioned healthcare, or legal worker, with an excessive bleeding heart, who will be enamored by this story and look to find some good in this poor misguided, cat-loving individual… Good luck…Sociopaths don’t love…, they use. Now a little caution here: Not everyone who lies a little, cheats a little, hurts a little, or acts in a selfish manner is a sociopath…We all have some sociopathy within us. Please don’t read this article and start accusing everyone who has hurt or been unjust to you as being one. Even many hardened criminals who have committed serious anti-social crimes do not exactly fit the bill… So how do you know when you are encountering one?...It’s difficult…, but sometimes you just have to trust your instincts… Sometimes when you look deep into the eyes of a sociopath, you can see and feel ruthless, icy heart that lies beneath. Savory fall dishes enhanced with grapes (ARA) - Beautiful fall vegetables are in season now and make for wonderful dishes that will have your family members saying “yum.” In addition to the traditional fall flavors of produce like squash and cauliflower, California grapes are also in season, having one of the longest, “justpicked” seasons among North American fruits, from May to January. Always the perfect snack, grapes possess a flavor balance of sweetness and acidity, making them a versatile ingredient for both sweet and savory preparations. When it comes to fall produce, cauliflower is often passed over in the produce aisles in favor of its much-touted cousin broccoli. But roasting cauliflower brings out a hint of surprising sweetness in this robust veggie. Add to that roasted grapes, with their juicy burst of tangy flavor, along with a good sprinkling of ground cumin, and you'll be reaching for cauliflower more often just to prepare this simple and delightful dish. Butternut squash takes on a whole new
dimension when baked with grapes and rosemary and seasoned with a gratin topping. The crunch of the topping adds another texture component to the “pop” of juice coming from the grapes and the browned edges of the comforting squash. Rosemary offers a hint of aromatics that fits perfectly into the mix. Roasting grapes is a big trend in finer restaurants, but very easy to do. Roasted grapes can also be turned into a simple sauce, by adding a ladleful of wine, water or broth and reducing the mixture over heat to thicken to a syrupy consistency. Drizzle over pork tenderloins or sauteed chicken breasts, and you'll wonder why you've never done it before. Both featured recipes have an added bonus: They combine fruit and vegetables, which are foods that health experts say we need to eat more of, more often.
