Witches Are Coming To Broward

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts presents more than 700 performances each year.

Just in time for Halloween, Slow Burn Theatre Company’s 2024/2025 Season, presented by American National Bank and Visit Lauderdale, opens with the South Florida premiere of The Witches of Eastwick from Saturday, October 19th –Sunday, November 3rd in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In the wake of the Champlain Towers South collapse, buying a condominium in Florida has become far more than just a decision about lifestyle and location. Recent Legislation, particularly Senate Bill 4D, has brought critical attention to the structural integrity of older buildings, making it clear that the safety of a condo building should take precedence over amenities and HOA fees. While features like: Pools, Gyms, and scenic views might be appealing, the true value of a condo lies in the strength of its foundation—literally.

For those considering a condo purchase in this postSurfside era, it’s essential to know what to look for beyond the surface. From the building’s age to its maintenance history, there are key factors that must be carefully evaluated to ensure your safety and protect your investment.

Below, are the 10 most critical questions to ask when buying a condo in Florida:

An All-Time Low

Don’t Trust The Government With Your Privacy, Property Or Your Freedoms

Public trust in the government to “do what is right” understandably remains at an all-time low.

After all, how do you trust a government that continuously sidesteps the Constitution and undermines our rights? You can’t.

When you consider all the ways “we the people” are being bullied, beaten, bamboozled, targeted, tracked, repressed, robbed, impoverished, imprisoned and killed by the government, one can only conclude that you shouldn’t trust the government with your privacy, your property, your life, or your freedoms.

Consider for yourself.

Don’t trust the government with your privacy, digital or otherwise. In the more than two decades since 9/11, the militarysecurity industrial complex has operated under a permanent state of emergency that, in turn, has given rise to a digital prison that grows more confining and inescapable by the day. Wall-to-wall surveillance, monitored by AI software and fed to a growing network of fusion centers, render the twin concepts of privacy and anonymity almost void.

Don’t trust the government with your property. If government agents can invade your home, break down your doors, kill your dog, damage your furnishings and terrorize your family, your property is no longer private and secure—it belongs to the government. Hard-working Americans are having their bank accounts, homes, cars, electronics and cash seized by police under the assumption that they have allegedly been associated with some criminal scheme.

Don’t trust the government with your finances. The U.S. Government—and that includes the current administration—is spending money it doesn’t have on programs it can’t afford and “we the taxpayers” are being forced to foot the bill for the government’s fiscal insanity. The national debt is $35 Trillion and growing, yet there seems to be no end in sight when it comes to the government’s fiscal insanity. According to Forbes, Congress has raised, extended or revised the definition of the debt limit 78 times since 1960 in order to allow the government to essen-

tially fund its existence with a credit card.

Don’t trust the government with your health. For all intents and purposes, “we the people” have become lab rats in the government’s secret experiments, which include MKULTRA and the U.S. military’s secret race-based testing of mustard gas on more than 60,000 enlisted men. Indeed, you don’t have to dig very deep or go very back in the nation’s history to uncover numerous cases in which the government deliberately conducted secret experiments on an unsuspecting populace—citizens and non-citizens alike— making healthy people sick by spraying them with chemicals, injecting them with infectious diseases and exposing them to airborne toxins. Unfortunately, the public has become so easily distracted by the political spectacle out of Washington, DC, that they are altogether oblivious to the grisly experiments, barbaric behavior and inhumane conditions that have become synonymous with the U.S. government, which has meted out untold horrors against humans and animals alike.

Don’t trust the government with your life: At a time when growing numbers of unarmed people have been shot and killed for just standing a certain way, or moving a certain way, or holding something— anything—that police could misinterpret to be a gun, or igniting some trigger-centric fear in a police officer’s mind that has nothing to do with an actual threat to their safety, even the most benign encounters with police can have fatal consequences. The number of Americans killed by police continues to grow, with the majority of those killed as a result of police encounters having been suspected of a non-violent offense or no crime at all, or during a traffic violation.

just enough freedom to think we are free but not enough to actually allow us to live as a free people. On paper, we may be technically free, but in reality, we are only as free as a government official may allow.

Whatever else it may be—a danger, a menace, a threat—the U.S. government is certainly not looking out for our best interests, nor is it in any way a friend to freedom.

Remember the purpose of a good government is to protect the lives and liberties of its people.

Unfortunately, what we have been saddled with is, in almost every regard, the exact opposite of an institution dedicated to protecting the lives and liberties of its people.

Third, know the people you’re entrusting with your local government. Are your police chiefs being promoted from within your community? Are your locally elected officials accessible and equally important, are they open to what you have to say? Who runs your local media? Does your newspaper report on local events? Who are your judges? Are their judgments fair and impartial? How are prisoners being treated in your local jails? Finally, don’t get so trusting and comfortable that you stop doing the hard work of holding your government accountable. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, there is still a lot Americans

“We the people” should have learned early on that a government that repeatedly lies, cheats, steals, spies, kills, maims, enslaves, breaks the laws, overreaches its authority, and abuses its power at almost every turn can’t be trusted.

So what’s the answer?

For starters, get back to basics. Get to know your neighbors, your community, and your local officials.

According to a report by Mapping Police Violence, police killed more people in 2022 than any other year within the past decade. In 98% of those killings, police were not charged with a crime.

Don’t trust the government with your freedoms. For years now, the government has been playing a cat-and-mouse game with the American people, letting us enjoy

Second, understand your rights. Know how your local government is structured. Who serves on your city council and school boards? Who runs your local jail: has it been co opted by private contractors? What recourse does the community have to voice concerns about local problems or disagree with decisions by government officials?

can do to topple the police state tyrants, but any revolution that has any hope of succeeding needs to be prepared to reform the system from the bottom up. And that will mean re-learning step by painful step, what it actually means to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Jewish Community To Celebrate Sukkot Holiday This Month

As the seasons change from summer to fall and families spend more time inside, the Jewish community of South Florida will celebrate the Annual Holiday of Sukkot by heading outdoors. Sukkot, also known as the holiday of booths, begins this year (5785/2024) at sundown on Wednesday, October 16th and concludes on the evening of Wednesday, October 23rd. The two day holiday of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah immediately follows Sukkot, beginning the evening of Wednesday, October 23rd and ending on Friday, October 25th.

During Sukkot, we remember G-d’s kindness to us during our journey through the desert by dwelling in a Sukkah--a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches--for the duration of the Sukkot Festival. For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the Sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home. The temporary booths emphasize how the world and the Jewish people rely on G-d’s protection. Eating under the stars allows us to truly thank G-d and see the blessings that surround us. Sukkot is a wonderful way for us to continue celebrating and connecting with our Judaism after the High Holidays.

Another unique holiday practice is the gathering of four different species. The taking of the Four Kinds: an Etrog (a rare citrus fruit, originally from Italy, but now also commonly grown in Morocco & Israel), a Lulav (palm frond), Hadassim (myrtles) and Aravot (willows), tied together with Lulav Leafs. On each day of the festival, except for Shabbat, we take the Four Kinds, recite a blessing over them, bring them together in our hands and wave them in all six directions. The Four Kinds represent the diverse types and personalities that make up our community, and whose intrinsic unity we emphasize on Sukkot.

Chabad Houses and many synagogues throughout Florida will be available to help each family plan a Sukkah during the weeks leading up to the start of the holiday. They will also all be equipped with a Lulav & Etrog set for anyone to use, free of charge. Many Chabads will also have available Etrog and Lulav sets for you to order, as it is preferable to actually own your own set. They will be offering guid-

ance and classes for all community members interested in learning more about the holiday.

If you would like to learn how to bind together your own Lulav set, you can join me for a hands-on class on Sunday, October 13th, 10:00 a.m. at Chabad Chayil in the Highland Lakes section of Miami North (Aventura). The class will be free of charge and open to anyone who reserves at: www.ChabadChayil.org/ Sukkah.

Drawing from the gravity of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkot gives us the chance to celebrate the sweetness of nature and to thank G-d for His protection. Sukkot touches all five senses: the sweet smell of the Etrog, the feel of the

palm branch and twigs in your hand, the sights and sounds of the Sukkah around us and the taste of the festival’s feasts.

Sukkot, referred to as the holiday of rejoicing, comes just five days after Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. The group of four plants, including the Etrog fruit, are replete with symbolic meaning, including the fall harvest and gathering season, and the unity of the Jewish people.

We encourage you to contact your local Chabad or synagogue to celebrate the holiday. You’re of course welcome to join us at Chabad Chayil for a community meal in the Sukkah, Shabbat or any of the holiday nights. Reservations can be made via: (305) 770-1919. Or: www.Chabad Chayil.org/High-Holidays. You can also

use our Sukkah any time of day or night 24/8. We’ll leave the lights on for you, and keep a set of Lulav and Etrog for use any time during the day. To learn more about the holiday, or to order a Lulav & Etrog, visit: www.ChabadChayil.org/Sukkah.

Join The Humane Society Of Greater Miami For The 2024 Walk For The Animals

The Humane Society of Greater Miami is gearing up for its much-anticipated annual event, the Walk for the Animals, set to take place on Saturday, October 5th, at Margaret Pace Park. From 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., animal lovers from all walks of life are invited to join a heartwarming event filled with fun, community spirit, and a commitment to helping our furry friends in need.

The Walk for the Animals is more than just a leisurely stroll; it’s a day dedicated to raising vital funds for homeless and neglected pets in our local area. With all proceeds from the event going directly to the Humane Society of Greater Miami, participants will play a crucial role in providing essential care, medical treatment, and shelter for animals that cannot advocate for themselves.

“We are thrilled to bring the community together for this wonderful event,” said Laura P., Director of Community Outreach for the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “Not only does the walk serve as a platform for raising funds, but it also allows us to spread awareness about the pressing issues facing animals in our community.”

The walk itself is designed to be a fun and inclusive experience for both people and their pets. Participants can stroll along scenic paths at Margaret Pace Park, where they will encounter fellow animal enthusiasts, friendly faces, and a host of entertaining activities. This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of compassion and care for all animals, aligning perfectly with the Humane Society’s mission.

Exciting Activities for All Ages

This year’s event promises a packed schedule of activities aimed at engaging both pets and their human companions. Attendees can look forward to a variety of interactive doggie games such as “Smarty Paws” and “Bobbing for Duckies,” which are sure to keep both pups and their owners entertained. Families will also enjoy games like the “Bark Bag Toss” that offer fun for participants of all ages.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Doggie Costume Contest, where furry participants can strut their stuff in their most creative outfits. For those who believe their pooch has the best smooch, the “Best Kisser” competition will add an adorable twist to the day’s festivities. Fabulous prizes await the winners, making the friendly competition all the more exciting.

In addition to the pet-centric activities, the event will feature family-friendly games and creative activities, including face painting for children, a fun maze to explore, and a spooky ring toss. There will also be a dedicated photo zone, allowing families to capture memories while supporting a worthy cause.

“We want this event to be a celebration of our love for animals while also educating the community about the need for

support,” Laura emphasized. “Every little bit helps, and together we can make a significant impact.”

Participating in the Walk for the Animals is more than just a day of fun; it’s an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless animals.

By registering, donating, or simply spreading the word, community members can be a voice for the voiceless and take a stand against animal neglect.

“Your support helps provide food, medical care, shelter, and adoption services for animals in need,” Laura noted.

“Every step taken during the walk contributes to a brighter future for our furry com-

panions.”

To join the cause, participants can visit the event website at: http:// p2p.onecause.com/walkfortheanimals to register, make a donation, or learn more about how to get involved. The Humane Society encourages individuals, families, and local businesses to participate and make a lasting impact.

Dania Beach Breaks Ground

On Unprecedented Storm Drainage Project in the SE Neighborhood

“Due to the extent of flooding experienced this year, pumping water from the most affected streets to nearby areas is no longer effective, as the drainage system is interconnected, and water flows back into lower-elevation regions in the southeast neighborhood,” said Dincer Ozaydin, deputy director and city engineer, Public Services Department.

Addressing the street flooding challenge is a top priority for the City of Dania Beach. In recent times, the weather has thrown unexpected challenges, highlighting the vulnerability of stormwater drainage systems. Flash floods are no longer exclusive to tropical storms; they occur anytime extremely heavy rainfall and king tides overwhelm the existing infrastructure.

With funding finally in place, the first phase of the historic Southeast Drainage Project commenced on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. with a groundbreaking ceremony at SE Third Street immediately west of SE Fifth Avenue, Dania Beach, FL.

“This multi-million-dollar project is the largest public investment our city has ever made,” said Dania Beach Mayor A. J. Ryan IV. “We were able to secure funding from a multitude of sources and the approval from various local, county, state and federal agencies and tribes to finally get started.”

The first phase of the new project includes the installation of approximately 5,000 linear feet of solid drainage pipe, a new pump station, 12 injection wells, and swale improvements.

The current drainage system in the southeast area of the city, equipped with pumps, is designed to transfer rainwater from streets to nearby mangroves, and is actively engaged, but no longer effective. There are three pump stations in the

southeast section that automatically activate depending on the water levels in the system.

The project is divided into two geographical phases (north and south). Phase

one (north) is expected to be completed in 2026, and phase two (south) completion is yet determined. Phase one will include the following area: SE 3rd St to SE 4th St, SE 2nd Ave to SE 5th Ave. Phase two will include SE 4th Ter to SE 7th St. SE 2nd Ave to SE 5th Ave.

Overall, the project (two phases) cost is $32 million, and it includes funding sources from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection – Resilient Florida Grant in the amount of $3,480,000.00, Broward County –Transportation Surtax funding of

$7,212,000.00, and City funding at $21,308.000.

The contractor, Ric-Man Construction will place signs and post notices door-todoor prior to any work affecting residents. Dania Beach project manager, John Quintero, asks for residents to remain patient during construction.

Dania Beach has completed and is working on many other stormwater infrastructure projects throughout the city and is in the final phase of modeling a stormwater master plan.

For A Great Cause During South Florida’s Beach Ball 2024

The YMCA of South Florida kicks off the fall season with its annual Beach Ball, presented by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 1 Seminole Way, in Hollywood. The Beach Ball benefits the water safety and drowning prevention programs at the YMCA.

The YMCA’s Beach Ball is one of the hottest social events to kick off the season, with more than 600 philanthropic and business professionals in attendance. Guests are encouraged to dress to the theme, “Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler” (Let the Good Times Roll) During the evening guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, dinner, live musical entertainment, dancing and a live and silent auction. Proceeds from the Beach Ball supports Financial Assistance for Aquatics programming so that anyone, regardless of their ability to pay, can come to the Y to learn water safety. Unfortunately, South Florida leads the nation in childhood drownings, and the Y’s mission is to work with the community to stem this tide.

“Just because the calendar changes to fall, does not mean our children and families are safe from drowning, particularly here in South Florida,” said YMCA of South Florida CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “Our programs continue to have an impact on local communities, providing swim lessons and water safety education to more than 175,000 children and their families. We can only do that with the generous support from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and all our Beach Ball sponsors and guests. Together we can save lives.”

Off-Broadway’s longest-running and most beloved musical, The Fantasticks, will kick off Island City Stage’s 13th South Florida Season beginning October 17th. Audiences are in for a treat with a twist during Island City Stage’s South Florida premiere of this reimagined version by original librettist and lyricist Tom Jones featuring two young compelling gay leads. The show will run through November 17th, 2024.

“‘The Fantasticks’ is the classic it is for a reason - it’s a beautiful story with a sumptuous score,” said Andy Rogow, Artistic Director of Island City Stage. “This new same-sex version just makes it all the more relatable to the fans, like me, who wore out their albums listening to it. We worked hard to obtain the rights to perform this version and I’m sure our audiences will fall in love with the show all over again.”

The Fantasticks is an allegorical story loosely based on Edmund Rostand’s 1894 play The Romancers (Les Romanesques), concerning two neighboring parents who trick their children into falling in love by pretending to feud. The LGBTQIA+ focused rewrite features two young gay men, Matt and Lewis, at the center of the story, instead of a young man and woman (the original characters were Matt and Luisa).

According to Playbill, during its original run at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village, The Fantasticks logged a record-breaking 17,162 performances. When the original production closed in 2002, news of the closing made the front page of The New York Times. In 2006, the revival opened at The Theater Center, directed by Jones. That production closed June 4th, 2017, after playing 4,390 performances in the Jerry Orbach Theatre, for a combined total of 21,552 performances in New York—still the longest-running musical production worldwide. Over the years, notable names who have appeared in the Off-Broadway and touring productions have included Liza Minnelli, Elliott Gould, F. Murray Abraham, Glenn Close, Keith Charles, Carole Demas, Kristin Chenoweth and Bert Convy. This newly revised version of the classic show premiered in 2022 in Michigan.

Island City Stage’s production of The Fantasticks is directed by Rogow and stars Jonny Lee Jr. (Lewis), Kevin Hincapie (Matt) Jesse Luttrell (El Gallo), Margot Moreland (Mildred), Michael Gioia (Henry); Rayner Gabriel (Mortimer); Louie San Luis (Mute) and Jeni Hacker (Bessie). Actor, Singer, and Writer Jonny Lee Jr. was most recently seen as Bobby Bob in Soft Power Bobby (Signature Theatre). Condo Safety

of the most crucial indicators of its structural integrity. Condos built before the 1990’s are particularly susceptible to deterioration due to outdated construction methods, designs, and materials. Coastal properties face the added challenge of Saltwater Exposure, which can accelerate Concrete Spalling and Corrosion of Rebar. This is especially concerning for buildings constructed before Building Codes were tightened after Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

2. When was the last structural inspection?

Under Florida’s Senate Bill 4D, buildings over 30 years old, or over 25 years old if they are within three miles of the coast, are required to have Detailed Structural Assessments. Prospective buyers should ask for the date of the last inspection and request a copy of the report. If a building hasn’t had an inspection recently, this could indicate impending repair costs or an outdated understanding of the building’s safety.

3. What were the inspection findings?

Simply knowing that an inspection took place isn’t enough. You need to dig into the findings. Reports of Cracks or Water Intrusion can indicate serious issues that require immediate attention. A building with a laundry list of necessary repairs might not be a wise investment, especially when you factor in potential disruptions to your living environment during the repair process.

4. What is the building’s maintenance history?

Request the building’s maintenance history, particularly focusing on the care of key structural components like the Roof, Plumbing, Electrical Systems, and Common Areas. A building that’s been routinely maintained is a good sign of responsible management, which means fewer surprises for you down the road. However, a neglected building might be a ticking time bomb, with future repair costs falling onto the residents.

5. Are there any planned or ongoing repairs?

If a building is currently undergoing or planning major renovations, you’ll want to know the scope of the project and its expected timeline. Not only can these repairs be disruptive, but they may also

Some fees cover essential services like insurance and maintenance, while others may only cover superficial amenities. Be sure you know what’s included in these fees, as a low fee may indicate the asso-

and liability. Underinsured buildings can leave residents with massive repair bills in the event of damage, so it’s essential to confirm the coverage limits and any deductibles.

We Were Spared By Hurricane Helene

Are You

Prepared For The Next Storm - Plus Election Information

This past week we all mobilized in preparation for Hurricane Helene. By the grace of God, we were lucky to not have been drastically affected by the wind or rain but those in the panhandle and north were not so lucky. This hurricane became a monster that set a historic record. It grew to a Category 4, killing eighty-four people and impacting the west coast of Florida, made landfall in the Big Bend Area and went on to wreak havoc in Georgia, the Carolina’s, Tennessee and Virginia. The damage alone from this one storm is estimated to be up to twenty-six billion dollars.

I am urging all our residents to remain vigilant during the Hurricane Season. We have seen two massive rain events in the past year that have impacted properties city wide. Many owners are still recovering and shaken to the core that it may happen again. I am sure like me every time it rains, I pray that we will be spared. So, my message is we all need to have our plan in place as hurricanes are unpredictable. As one Florida woman stated on the news, “it is the price we pay living in the tropics and along the coast.” I was thinking about Atlanta, Tennessee, and North Carolina. We are all being impacted.

Two weeks ago, we held a training for storm preparedness. I talked with our expert about hosting another meeting on how to protect homes and properties from flooding this month. It is one thing to have a plan, it is another thing to prevent flood waters from coming into your home. Due to Hurricane Helene, I am not certain if we will be able to host one as she works directly with FEMA.

I have spoken with residents that are looking into the many products that are now on the market to help protect homes and businesses. There are reusable flood barriers and flood gates. These are much better than sandbags as they are easier to put in place and then can be stored. There are other items that can be used inside your home as well. Companies now are selling usable watertight bags for everything and every size. One company has a size that is for a full room of furniture. You lay it out, move your belongings on to the tarp-like surface and then seal it up. There are also more extensive ways to address flooding. FEMA has a program where they will pay to elevate your home. The Severe Repetitive Loss SRL Grant provides that if your home has been

impacted by flooding and has received flood claims twice. They also help with Dry Proofing homes. This means placing special veneers on the structures, installing backflow meters to prevent sewer backups. Once I hear when our expert will be available, I will be hosting a Town Hall so we can work together to help our community become more resilient. Meanwhile our prayers go out to all the families that have lost their loved ones. Are you registered to vote? If you are not there is still time. Looking to Adopt Hi, I’m Layla. Can I come live with you? Sadly, I was given up because my owner lost his home and had nowhere to live with me. He wanted me to have a safe and loving home, so now I’m patiently waiting for someone to adopt me. I’m 3years-old and 50 pounds and I know some basic commands. I enjoy playing with toys, so please make sure I have a toy box full of them. If you’re looking for a

spirited gal, with a warm disposition, then I’m the gal for you. The dog walkers at the shelter enjoy taking me out and say that I’m very loving and deserve a home where I can be spoiled. If you have a dog with a similar energy level, I think we could be best buds. So, what do you think? Can I be your new family member?

My owner moved away and abandoned me, and I was so scared. Luckily, a neighbor took me in, got me Vaccinated and Spayed and then brought me to the shelter so I could find a new home. My name is Milan and I’m just over a year old. I am a bit shy, and I think that is why no one asks to meet me. I’ve been waiting since early June to find a home. If you adopt me, please give me time to acclimate to my new surroundings. My favorite things are soft toys to cuddle, feathers to chase, and some delicious treats. Once I settle in, I am loving, playful and quite entertaining. Will you be my new best friend?
