Re ector technology Types and shapes

The basic re ector types

Toget her wit h t he lamp, t he re ector determines t he light quality and t he economic ef ciency of a luminaire. It is its task to collect and focus t he light and to direct it onto an effect ive area, wit h glare being avoided at t he same t ime. Depending on t he size, shape and material structure of t he re ector, different beam angles and luminous intensity distribut ions are possible. Among ot hers, t here are rotat ion-symmetrical re ectors and strip re ectors. The shape of a re ector is based as a matter of principle on mat hemat ically described curves, t he conic sect ions. In pract ice mostly freely calculated contours and/or mixed shapes are used in order to permit opt imum light distribut ion for t he many areas of applicat ion.

Rotat ion-symmetrical re ectors are produced by t he rotat ion of a previously calculated re ector contour around any axis. They are used wit h point-shaped lamps.

Strip re ectors are produced by t he displacement of a previously calculated re ector contour perpendicular to t he plane of project ion. A dist inct ion is to be made between symmetrical and asymmetrical re ectors. They are used for elongated, tubular lamps.

The basic re ector shapes

Each parabola encloses a focal point. All of t he light beams originat ing from t his point are re ected parallel to t he axis. The parabola shape generates a narrow beam angle for precisely accurate illuminat ion.

The special feature of t he ellipsoid re ector is to be found in its two focal points. All of t he beams originat ing from t he rst focal point are re ected to t he second focal point. If t he second focal point is in t he emergence plane of a ceiling opening, it is possible to direct a lot of light t hrough narrow apertures.

In pract ical applicat ion t he curves often deviate. They are calculated freely in order to systemat ically comply wit h problem de nit ions. The spotlight Silla is posit ioned in t he centre of aisle areas and illuminates rows of shelves on t he right and t he left at a certain height at t he same t ime. In t his case several re ector segments in a transverse direct ion were used.

Involute

All of t he beams originat ing from t he central point are re ected in t hemselves. Upon a slight displacement from t he central point posit ion a real image of t he lamp is produced immediately adjacent to t he original lamp. This contour is used in counter-re ector systems.

The involute is not one of t he conic sect ions. Wit h it every light beam tangent ially leaving t he intersect ing plane of a tubular lamp is re ected in itself and directed around t he lamp. No re ect ion takes place. In t hat way t he lamp is subjected to only little wear and t he ef ciency is increased. The shape of t he involute is used, for example, as a head re ector for uorescent lamps.

The matching beam angle for the lighting task The beam angle to be achieved is obtained from t he radius of t he circular area which is to be illuminated and t he space between t he light points. Therefore t he smaller t he angle is t he narrower/brighter t he illuminat ion of t he object is, t he wider t he beam angle is t he larger/weaker t he illuminat ion is. In shop light ing, t he most varied products are illuminated – from mobile phones via t he fashionable out t as far as t he shelf area. From t his, demands made on t he size of t he cone of light are deduced. In order to cover t he wide range of tasks required in actual pract ice, Ansorg’s range comprises four main re ectors.

What counts wit h regard to t he light ing in a museum or an open-plan of ce, is not mandatory for merchandise presentat ion in a department store or shop – and vice versa. The basis for t he re ector calculat ion consists of t he speci c, individualised demands made by our clients, light ing designers or architects. Technical requirement parameters are, for example, t he type and wattage of t he lamp, t he beam angle to be achieved, t he re ector diameter, t he qualitat ive form of t he light intensity distribut ion curve ( LIDC). Furt her general quality requirements are: homogeneous beam pattern, appropriate glare reduct ion, a long product life of t he lamp and t he ballast equipment as well as, decisively, t he energy ef ciency and t he light output rat io.

Operating ef ciency

An important parameter for t he development of t he contour is t he size of t he re ector diameter. This can, for example, in t he case of recessed luminaires, be deduced from t he ceiling cut-outs. At Ansorg t here are mainly standardised ceiling cut-outs of 130mm and 185mm which make t he design of a homogeneous ceiling pattern possible and reduce mount ing costs and t imes.

The ef ciency of re ector/luminaire systems is generally equated wit h t he LOR (light output rat io) ef ciency. However, t his stands only for t he quant ity of light output by a luminaire. The assessment of t he ef ciency of a re ector exclusively according to its LOR value is one subaspect and can in certain circumstances produce a misleading result.

A furt her criterion is t he lamp opening. It has an in uence on t he light output rat io. It is necessary to place t he re ector as close as possible around t he lamp so t hat no light is diffused towards t he rear and lost unused.

One simple example: a freely burning lamp has, for example, an LOR of 100%, but t he illuminance is not suf cient for accentuated illuminat ion of t he object, because t he light is distributed undirected wit hin t he room. It t herefore does not illuminate t he required object. A high LOR ef ciency is t herefore not synonymous wit h t he opt imum ful lment of t he light ing task.

On t he ot her hand, ef ciency is generally de ned as t he rat io of effort and performance. For re ectors, t he object ive is to direct as much light as possible in a required direct ion: what is decisive is t hat arrives where it is meant to arrive. Light distribution curves

The speci c distribut ion of t he light ux arising from re ect ion can be pictorially presented wit h t he help of a standardised light intensity distribut ion curve (LIDC). It describes t he desired light distribut ion in t he room and is a target for t he development of t he re ector contour. Decisive for t he light distribut ion curve of a re ector are t he shape and size of t he burner image in t he re ector.

Re ector material

Veri cation of the re ector contour

The surface also plays a part in deciding t he assessment of t he quality of a re ector. The degree of re ect ion de nes its quality level: simple solid aluminium material has a high degree of re ect ion reaching 85 %, high-grade re ector material provides degrees of re ect ion of 95 % and above.

On t he basis of t he contours calculated beforehand, t he contours prepared are read in wit h a separate simulat ion program and t heoret ically evaluated wit h a real light source and, if necessary, corrected. At t he beginning of t he simulat ion, a high-gloss surface material is used t hat reacts part icularly sensit ively. The result of t he simulat ion is a light distribut ion curve which serves as an assessment and decision-making basis before product ion of t he tool or sampling takes place.

This exible luminaire provides t he funct ions general, ambient light ing and accent light ing in one product. What is special about Boxx is its userfriendly technology: t he spotlight can be focused wit hout t he use of tools and in nitely variably from 20° to 50°. By means of simple turning of t he re ector, you can achieve different light beam patterns – whet her narrowly accentuated or wide beamed. Different beam angles are t herefore possible without a change of re ector and t his is advantageous in sales rooms wit h varying posit ioning of merchandise. The high-grade re ector material is sandblasted and minimises scattering losses.

The opt ion of a large variety of interchangeable re ectors characterises t he Ansorg range. The luminaire Brick is compat ible wit h different re ectors – achieved wit h a uniform burning posit ion. Four re ectors wit h facetted surfaces and four different beam angles are available. By means of t he easy and user-friendly re ector replacement, Brick permits t he performance of all tasks: from point accent light ing to large-area scattered light ing.

The luminaire Bola provides, by means of t he t ilted forward 2-component re ector, a homogeneous, and full-area light distribut ion on t he walls â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as far as t he ceiling. The light quality and t he large-area light distribut ion addit ionally permit large spaces between luminaires in light ing design, t hus reducing investment and running costs.

The spotlight Silla designed for aisle area and shelf light ing is equipped wit h ultra-high-grade re ector material. This aluminium material has an extremely high degree of re ect ion of up to 95 %. As a result, scattering losses are minimised and t he light quality is increased. Also in t he case of large spaces between luminaires, t he homogeneous illuminat ion is included to t he full extent, a fact indicat ing great economic ef ciency. Silla provides t hree re ector types as variants for different areas of use.

LED technology and the optimum light beam pattern in the retail eld Faceting permits effective control of the light ux from the LED unit to the goods. There are no undesirable lighting effects.

LEDs, wit h t heir posit ioning in t he luminaire and t heir radiat ion characterist ics, entail new challenges for re ector de-velopment. In order to comply wit h t he peculiarit ies of t he LED light sources, re ectors also meet special requirements so as to achieve t he opt imum result as regards light ing intensity and light quality. The Take TKL spotlight serves as an example of t he requirements which a re ector must meet in actual pract ice. The LED unit used produces a high light ux and a high light quality. So t hat t hese parameters can be incorporated into a harmonious light ing atmosphere at t he PoS, a re ector type has been developed by Ansorg which in its geometry is adapted to t he LED unit.

Standards and safety

Ansorgâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s light ing laboratory enables Ansorg to play on its home ground. This laboratory is equipped wit h a computer-controlled goniometer wit h an addit ional image-resolving luminance measuring camera: it makes it possible to determine t he beam angle, t he light distribut ion, t he luminance and standardized ef ciency of t he luminaires and t he spectral distribut ion of lamps in compliance wit h t he standards. The light ing laboratory provides our engineers wit h excellent condit ions for exploring, analysing and improving developments and products. At t he same t ime, an important aspect is t hat t he light ing technology requirements are not only achievable, but also reproducible. Ansorg luminaires naturally comply wit h all standards concerning safety. Aut horitat ive standards are t he Internat ional Standard for Luminaires (IEC60598) and t he Acts on Electromagnet ic Compat ibility and Electromagnet ic Fields. This is con rmed by t he cert i cates from many test inst itutes, including internat ional ones. Besides the re ector and the lamp, from case to case t he lter also plays a part. In t his combinat ion lies t he recipe for a presentat ion wit h t he right colour. The coat ings of t hese Mood lters, also referred to as conversion lters, vary t he colour rendit ion wit h different intensit ies. For HIT lamps a new generat ion of convent ional (KVG) and electronic (EVG) ballasts is in use. Technical innovat ions increase t he product lives of t he ballasts and set new safety standards. They are extremely pract ical as regards installat ion and since very recently t hey have been available in almost all wattages.

Overloaded voltage networks and voltage peaks are increasingly reducing product lives. The new electronic ballasts are protected from high voltage pulses of up to 2,500 volts, standard equipment is merely 2,000 volts.

As soon as t he lamp has reached t he end of its useful life and t he light ing quality deteriorates, t he ballasts cut off automat ically. There is no ickering, t he system is not overheated and t he user on t he spot immediately realizes when a lamp has to be replaced.

Excessively high ambient temperatures can heat up and destroy a ballast. The new products are rated for + 55째 C. As soon as t he temperature rises furt her t hey switch off automat ically.

Longer product lives.

Simple installation with plug & play.

The technical advantages result in a longer service life which saves t he need for frequent replacement of t he ballasts and indicates economic ef ciency. The convent ional ballasts have an average product life of 50,000 hours at an ambient temperature of 50째 C. In t he case of electronic ballasts even a minimum product life of 30,000 hours is guaranteed.

Connect ing up t he luminaire is very easy. The integrated jack for t he Wieland safety plug system permits direct connect ion of t he luminaire and mains cable to t he ballast. This results in a exible and simple change of wattage, e.g. from 35 W to 50 W and 70 W. This aspect is of importance part icularly for constantly changing display and decorat ion spaces in retail areas.

Beam angle

Illuminance

Colour rendering index (CRI)

The beam angle is t he opening angle of t he light beam of a luminaire or re ector lamp. It is determined by t he type of construct ion of t he re ector. Luminaires wit h a small beam angle produce small, brightly illuminated areas. Light sources wit h a wide beam angle produce large, but less brightly illuminated areas. In t he opening angle t he luminous intensity drops off to half of t he maximum value.

Illuminance ( letter symbol: E, unit of measure: lux ) de nes how much light – from a light ing technology point of view more precisely how much light ux (in lumens) – falls on a certain area: it amounts to one lux, if t he light ux of one lumen homogeneously illuminates an area of one square metre.

The colour rendit ion of a lamp characterizes t he colour effect which its light brings about on objects or persons. It is rated wit h t he general colour rendering index Ra. This indicates how naturally colours are rendered in t he light of a lamp.

For homogeneous illuminat ion, wide beam luminaires wit h large beam angles must be used. For accent light ing as a rule narrower beam light is necessary. The characterist ic of wide beam light wit h larger beam angles is designated as ‘Flood‘ and ‘Wide ood‘, t hat of narrow beam light wit h a small beam angle – for example 10° – is referred to as ‘Spot’. Ansorg dist inguishes between six main beam angles: Superspot 0° – 9° Spot 10° – 19° Medium ood 20° – 29° Flood 30° – 39° Wide ood 40° – 69° Very wide ood > 70°

The light colour temperature of a lamp is described by t he colour temperature in Kelvin (K). The commonly used lamps have colour temperatures in t he order of magnitude of less t han 3,300 Kelvin (warm white), 3,300 to 5,300 Kelvin (neutral white) to less t han 5,300 Kelvin (daylight white).

The colour rendering index is derived from eight frequently occurring test colours. Ra = 100 stands for t he best value; t he lower t he index is, t he worse are t he colour rendit ion characterist ics. Lamps wit h an Ra-index of less t han 80 should not be used indoors.

Colour temperature

The illuminance is measured wit h an illuminat ion photometer on horizontal and vert ical surfaces. It does not, however, precisely describe t he brightness impression of a room, as t his depends mainly on t he re ect ion characterist ics of t he room surfaces. In t hat way a white room appears, wit h t he same illuminance, brighter t han a dark one.

Lamp wattage

The power consumpt ion (also lamp wattage) describes t he electric power in watts (W) consumed by a lamp or a ballast. In t he case of low-pressure and high-pressure discharge lamps, t he addit ion of lamp wattage and power consumpt ion of t he ballast give t he system wattage.

Luminous intensity/ luminous intensity distribution The luminous intensity (letter symbol: I) is t he part of t he light ux t hat radiates in a certain direct ion. It is measured in candela (cd). The spat ial distribut ion of t he luminous intensity (luminous intensity distribut ion) characterises t he luminous exitance of luminaires and re ector lamps. The luminous intensity distribut ion is presented graphically in the form of curves, t he luminous intensity distribut ion curves (LIDC).

The luminance (letter symbol: l) is t he measure of t he brightness impression t hat t he eye gains from a luminous or illuminated area. The luminance is measured in candelas per unit area (cd/m2).

The operat ional ef ciency or light output rat io states how much of t he luminous ux generated by a lamp actually leaves t he luminaire. The type of directing of t he lamp’s luminous ux and t he t hermal condit ions inside t he luminaire determine t he light output rat io.

Degree of re ection The degree of re ect ion states what percentage of t he light ux falling on a surface is re ected. Light surfaces have a high degree of re ect ion and dark ones have a low degree of re ect ion: white walls re ect up to 85 % of t he light, panelling in light coloured wood st ill up to 35 %, red bricks, on t he ot her hand, only up to 15 %. Conclusion: t he darker a room is furnished, t he more light is required to achieve t he same illuminance on t he working plane.

The product philosophy of "the reflector as a luminaire" has been taken a step further with BOXX. The shape concentrates on essentials, while the function is based on high-quality lighting and electrical equipment. What is special about BOXX is the continuous adjustment of the focusing from narrow to wide beam carried out without any change of reflector which means that this is an extremely user-friendly design. Due to its flat shape this spotlight is suitable for areas with low ceilings.
