SUN VALLEY CENTER
Wine Auction 2009
WELCOME
to the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction Thank you for supporting our mission to stimulate and provoke the imagination while opening hearts and minds through excellence in diverse arts programming.
The Ripple Effect … "There’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no end." —Scott Adams
Coming to the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Wine Auction is a remarkably generous act of kindness that benefits a whole community. The Sun Valley Center has been providing art experiences in the Wood River region for 38 years, and our valley has come to rely on The Center for nurturing the creativity of our youth and keeping our community vital with worldclass arts and cultural programs. Year after year, passionate donors have been the driving force behind the success of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, and their extraordinary generosity at our annual Wine Auction provides 50% of The Center’s operating budget. We simply could not serve our community without your support! By attending a vintner dinner, purchasing an auction lot or raising your paddle for the scholarship lot, you make a difference—helping a scholarship recipient study music, providing a field trip to The Center for children to see art firsthand or enabling teachers to further their studies in the arts and humanities. Where the ripple effect ends, we never know. Because of a Center program, a teacher inspires a child’s interest in writing, a teenager decides to become a professional photographer, a student comes out of his shell after sharing a story with his class—we don’t always know where the ripples end, but we know where they begin. It is with great enthusiasm that the Sun Valley Center for the Arts welcomes you to the 2009 Wine Auction. See how your participation ripples through people’s lives!
A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We are so pleased that you are here for the 28th annual Sun Valley Center Wine Auction. The wonderful history and success of this great event is because of you—our friends who come and generously support the auction and the programs it makes possible. We extend our sincere welcome to you. The Sun Valley Center for the Arts fulfills its mission "to stimulate and provoke the imagination while opening hearts and minds through excellence in diverse arts programming" by offering exhibitions, lectures, classes and performing arts events that touch on issues relevant to our times and by bringing some of the world’s most interesting artists, writers and thinkers to our small community in central Idaho. To present these programs, whether an after school class taught by a local artist or a visit from the world-renowned Gloria Steinem, The Center relies on the generosity of our donors and more specifically, you, our Wine Auction patrons. Approximately half of our funding comes directly from the Wine Auction, and this year your impact will be as essential as ever. We care deeply about arts education and regularly partner with local schools to bring authors, musicians and artists to work directly with students of all ages. The Center’s outreach programs supplement the school curriculum with in-school classes and workshops, which are offered free of charge to students and teachers. In addition to in-school programs, The Center provides a robust scholarship program that, in 10 years, has given more than $341,000 to over 200 local students and educators. The majority of funds for scholarships come directly from the Wine Auction. The arts can be educational, fun, moving, instructive, challenging, frustrating, interesting and even confusing. What we know is that they are not just important in our lives, they are crucial. Crucial to inspiring creativity, crucial to giving kids and teens an outlet for their emotions, crucial for adults to continue learning and growing and crucial to bringing communities together. We are extremely grateful for your attendance, your love of the arts, and your commitment to keeping the arts a part of all of our lives. Have a wonderful Wine Auction weekend—and raise those paddles high!
BILL RYBERG, Executive Director, Sun Valley Center for the Arts
THANK YOU TO PETER AND JENNIFER ROBERTS By the time you peruse this catalog, much of the hard work that goes into preparing for the Wine Auction has taken place. This year, The Center was fortunate to have two very generous supporters dedicate an enormous amount of time and effort to that preparation: Peter and Jennifer Roberts. As Chairpersons for this year’s Wine Auction—our 28th!—Peter and Jennifer have worked tirelessly, starting on the very day after last year’s event ended. They helped line up many of the unique auction lots, visited with prospective vintners and sponsors in Napa and elsewhere, led our effort to introduce some new initiatives and served as gracious ambassadors of The Center wherever they traveled. Peter and Jennifer also led a group of dedicated Wine Auction Committee members, without whom the Wine Auction would never come to fruition. The group worked especially hard this year to ensure the Wine Auction’s success by developing auction lots that are truly one-of-a-kind. They helped bring to life some new ideas, such as the Riedel Wine Symposium and featuring guest chefs at the Wine Auction Gala, that will enhance the event nicely. All of us are deeply grateful to the Roberts and to the Wine Auction Committee for their commitment not only to The Center but to this community and the many ways in which the arts add to our quality of life.
SPECIAL THANKS As the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction enters its 28th year, we have added new events, moved locations and have invited guest chefs to participate in the Wine Auction Gala dinner. As ever, The Center relies on the support of the community and the generosity and help of the Sun Valley Resort to create an incredible event. The Center is deeply grateful for the participation of Cal Stamenov, Rick Moonen, Ben Spungin, Georg Riedel, Shayn Bjornholm and Chris Blanchard, who are all generously donating their time to help make the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction a success. We thank the Sun Valley Resort for welcoming our guest chefs and for all their help in making our move to Dollar Mountain Lodge a smooth transition.

CAL STAMENOV Chef & Culinary Director, Marinus at Bernardus Lodge Cal Stamenov is chef and culinary director—the creative visionary—for the dining venues of Bernardus Lodge, located in Carmel Valley, CA. In his position, Stamenov is responsible for the award-winning restaurant, Marinus, and the resort’s more casual bistro, Wickets. He also oversees the culinary operations for Will’s Fargo Dining House & Saloon in Carmel Valley Village. Stamenov’s cuisine is rooted in the subtle yet elegant uses of local organic produce, seafood and artisan farmed meats. His menus bring out the pure flavors of each fresh ingredient and seamlessly incorporate the herbs, vegetables and myriad varieties of tomatoes he grows in his own two-acre garden at Bernardus Lodge. To share his wealth of epicurean experiences, which span more than 20 years in some of the world’s most renowned restaurants, Stamenov initiated a series of seasonal culinary arts programs at Bernardus. These seminars, which cater to food and wine connoisseurs (namely Bernardus guests), bring to light the seasonal specialties of the region while simultaneously showcasing a selection of wines from the nearby Bernardus Winery and Vineyard. Prior to joining Bernardus Lodge in 1999, Stamenov was executive chef of the Pacific’s Edge restaurant at the Highlands Inn in Carmel. Stamenov was also closely involved with the prestigious Masters of Food & Wine event, an annual gathering of the world’s most celebrated chefs and winemakers. Before this, he served as chef de cuisine at the long-established Domaine Chandon Restaurant in Napa Valley. But for "Chef Cal," as he is fondly known, it all began in 1982 at the fabled Four Seasons restaurant in New York City, a post he accepted after graduating from the California Culinary Academy. Stamenov lives in Carmel Valley with his wife and three young children.

RICK MOONEN Creator & Executive Chef, rm seafood An advocate for sustainable fishing and seafood, chef Rick Moonen has a passion for conservation that has led him to national acclaim. A native New Yorker, Moonen graduated first in his class from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, in 1978. He apprenticed at L’Hostellerie Bressane in Hillsdale, New York, where he built both his confidence and experience working side by side with chef Jean Morel. From there, Moonen assumed the position of saucier at Manhattan’s La Cote Basque. This experience was followed by two years at Le Cirque working with the legendary Alain Sailhac. In the ensuing years, Moonen continued his career in New York, becoming executive chef at some of New York’s most iconic restaurants, including Le Relais, Century Café and Chelsea Central, before joining Buzzy O’Keefe at The Water Club. After six years, Moonen left to become executive chef and partner at Oceana, where he helped garner national recognition for the restaurant. His next step was partnering to create Molyvos, a Greek fish house. Then Moonen decided to develop his own restaurant, New York City’s rm. In 2005, he was drawn to the rapidly developing culinary scene in Las Vegas and closed his doors in New York City to open his multi-level restaurant Rick Moonen’s rm seafood at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. When not behind the stove, Moonen teaches about the dangers of overfishing and the importance of ocean conservation. He is a founding member of the Seafood Choices Alliances, as well as an active member of the Wildlife Conservation Society, Seaweb, and a chef’s advisory board member of Ecofish. Moonen is happiest doing the things that originally brought him to a culinary career: cooking, teaching and writing about fish and seafood. His current passion has been the writing of his first cookbook, Fish Without a Doubt, a practical, hands-on guide to buying, preparing and cooking a wide array of fish.

BEN SPUNGIN Pastry Chef, Marinus at Bernardus Lodge Pastry chef Ben Spungin was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. His first culinary experience was in high school, where he worked before school at Foster’s Market learning bread and morning pastries. This experience ignited a passion for cooking and baking that would lead him to receive his associate degree from the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont. While there, he interned at Magnolia Grill in Durham under Southern chef Ben Barker. When a spontaneous opportunity opened at the French Laundry under pastry chef Stephen Durfee, Ben headed west to California’s wine country. This experience opened Ben’s eyes to the range of creativity that can go into pastries and plated desserts. Ben was once again drawn west by an opportunity to work at Sierra Mar at Post Ranch in Big Sur and to work under chef Walter Manzke at his Carmel restaurants. In 2005, Ben joined chef Cal Stamenov at Marinus Restaurant at Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley. Chef Cal, a former pastry chef himself, and Ben have a collaborative relationship anchored by their passion for quality ingredients. Ben frequently incorporates wild and foraged ingredients such as oak bark, pine tree yerba buena, redwood tips and honeysuckle into his desserts. Ben lives on the Big Sur coastline with his wife and two young daughters.

GEORG RIEDEL
Tenth generation glassmaker Georg J. Riedel, born in 1949, joined the family business in 1973. Under his direction, the Riedel firm has evolved into a worldwide operating company. Georg founded a network of Riedel-owned subsidiaries, starting in 1979 by opening Riedel USA and continuing the expansions to Canada in 1992, Germany in 1996, Japan in 2000 and the UK in 2001. In 2006 he founded Riedel Development, specializing in private label offers. In 2004, Georg bought the German-based companies Nachtmann and Spiegelau, operating the three brands (Riedel, Nachtmann, Spiegelau) under "Riedel Glass Works," one of the largest producers of quality glass in Europe. Starting in 1987 with the support of winemaker friends like Angelo Gaja, Christian Moueix, and Robert Mondavi and the endorsement of wine publications such as Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Decanter and many others, Georg was fortunate to place his Riedel glasses onto the tables of the wine world. Under his leadership, Riedel has become the world’s leading wine glass company.

GREG QUIROGA Sharing the stage with his mentor, David Reynolds, Greg Quiroga returns for his third action-packed year raising his gavel on behalf of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Since joining Reynolds & Buckley in 2004, he has emerged as a dynamic force on the national fundraising auction circuit. His onstage blend of humor, passion and quick wit continues to endear him to auction crowds across the country. "Greg was fantastic from start to finish. Everyone is raving about him. Our fund-a-need doubled . . . our best event ever!" wrote Beth Sandefur of the California Shakespeare Theater after Greg’s first time appearance at that event earlier this year. In the Reynolds & Buckley tradition, his commitment to helping organizations is not limited to his onstage performance. Greg works tirelessly with an eye on successfully planning and implementing the best fundraising auction for each individual crowd. This dedication has earned him a large and loyal client base of over 60 charities nationwide. An avid golfer and the golf blogger for the San Francisco Examiner, Greg and his wife, Michele, live in San Francisco with their son, Ryder. For more information, visit www.Reynolds-Buckley.com.

DAVID REYNOLDS Returning for his 27th consecutive appearance, David Reynolds again lights up the stage on behalf of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. "He is a one-man orchestra of auctioneering, able to separate audiences from their currency with the subtlety of a Spanish galleon in full rig and the passion of Billy Graham in full flight," wrote Jeremy Oliver, the Australian wine writer, after seeing David at the podium. He charms, cajoles, and entertains with spontaneous oneliners. Along the way, he transformed the role of fundraising auctioneer into a performance art with his own distinctive signature. His San Francisco firm, Reynolds & Buckley, LLC, annually raises millions of dollars for charities. Their client list is nationwide, and David’s events have been in the Wine Spectator’s list of Top 10 charity auctions for years. Unique in a niche of his own creation, his focus is solely on fundraising auctions. Every week, his firm works on behalf of organizations large and small, including arts groups such as the Sun Valley Center, health care and research efforts, schools, museums, orchestras, children’s charities and other deserving causes. While on stage, his boundless vigor and witty style keep the bidding spirited from start to finish. Yet auctioning is only part of his contribution to fundraising success. David also shares his expertise through a lively blog that regularly appears on www.Reynolds-Buckley.com and provides a peek into life on the auction circuit, as well as insightful observations and tips on best practices. Colleen Buckley, his wife, is his partner in this venture. The firm also includes the energetic and entertaining Greg Quiroga, appearing with David on stage tonight.

The Junior Patrons Circle is a membership and volunteer group of young(ish) adults dedicated to furthering the goals of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. By informing other young adults and their families about The Center and hosting events and activities for them, the Junior Patrons Circle seeks to involve the next generation in its programs and develop future volunteer leaders for the arts in our community.
VOLUNTEERS Staging an event of this scope would simply not be possible without the dedicated support of an entire army of volunteers. From stuffing invitation envelopes to picking up the last bit of trash from the picnic, these terrific people set the highest possible standard for community service. Some have been with us for a long time, providing important leadership in organizing critical elements of the event year after year. Others are new to us this year and are welcome members of our Wine Auction family. Whatever the role or however long they’ve served, each makes a contribution to the success of the event and to the Sun Valley Center’s ability to provide free or low-cost arts programming to the community, artists in the schools, free family concerts and our scholarship awards. Please know that the staff, board and patrons of The Center think of our Wine Auction volunteers with gratitude throughout the year. If you have an opportunity, take a moment and ask the person checking you in, serving you at the picnic, or helping at the auction dinner if he or she is a volunteer. Chances are that they, like you, are contributing to a worthy cause by helping to make this incredible series of events possible. This is community spirit at its very best!

CONTAINER DESIGNATIONS 1) 375ml This designation refers to a small bottle that holds 375ml of wine, half as much as a standard wine container.
2) 750ml This designation refers to the standard-sized bottle that holds 750ml of wine, or 4/5-quarts. This size bottle, regardless of whether it has a straight or sloping neck, is used for red, white, rosĂŠ and sparkling wines. Sparkling wine bottles appear to be larger than standard because they are made of thicker glass to withstand the pressures of carbonation, but they, too, contain 750ml of wine.
3) Magnum This designation refers to a bottle that holds 1.5 liters of wine, the equivalent of two 750ml bottles. Sparkling wines are sometimes fermented in magnums because this method is believed to lengthen the wine’s life.
4) Double Magnum This designation refers to a bottle that holds three liters of wine, the equivalent of four 750ml bottles.
5) Rehoboam This designation refers to an oversized bottle that holds approximately 4.5 liters of wine, the equivalent of six 750ml bottles.
6) Jeroboam A jeroboam of sparkling wine holds three liters, the equivalent of a double magnum or four 750ml bottles. A jeroboam of still wine is the equivalent of six 750ml bottles or 4.5 liters.
7) Imperial This designation refers to an oversized bottle that holds approximately six liters of wine, the equivalent of eight 750ml bottles.
8) Methuselah This designation also refers to an oversized bottle that holds approximately six liters of wine, the equivalent of eight 750ml bottles but a different shape than the Imperial.
9) Salmanazar This designation refers to an oversized bottle that holds approximately nine liters of wine, the equivalent of twelve 750ml bottles.
10) Balthazar This term refers to a bottle that holds approximately twelve liters of wine, the equivalent of sixteen 750ml bottles.
11) Nebuchadnezzar This designation refers to an oversized bottle that holds approximately thirteen to fifteen liters of wine, depending on the manufacturer, date, country and region of manufacture—the equivalent of approximately seventeen to twenty 750ml bottles.

FEATURED AUCTION DINNER WINES The Sun Valley Center for the Arts would like to recognize the wineries listed below for donating the wines being poured at every table during tonight’s auction dinner. We thank the following donors for providing these featured wines and contributing to the success of our 28th Wine Auction.
Canihan Family Cellars Bill Canihan, Proprietor Canihan Family Cellars makes limited quantities of Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Franc from certified organic, dry-farmed estate vineyards in the Sonoma Valley. Situated on the border of the Carneros appellation, these vineyards benefit from an unusually cool climate ideally suited to these grape varieties. Harvesting at optimum ripeness, fermentation with native yeast, careful barrel aging and no fining or filtering produces flavorful wines that express the estate vineyards’ distinctive terroir. Befitting the care with which they are produced, every release of Canihan Family Cellars and Exuberance—its reserve label—is a limited edition. About the Wines: 2006 Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir A deliciously layered Pinot Noir, with strawberry, raspberry and wild berry fruit enriched by nuances of cedar and cigar box and ending with subtle earth notes. The wine’s rich, pleasing texture carries through the lingering finish. 2006 Exuberance Sonoma Valley Syrah An engaging and elegant Syrah. Bright red and black fruit aromas, accented by hints of smoked meat and peppercorn, lead to similarly articulated flavors. Silky, generous and balanced on the palate, this stylish Syrah received a Gold Medal at the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

About the Wines: 2006 William Hill Estate Reserve Napa Valley Chardonnay A blend of Chardonnay grapes from prime cold-climate appellations, this impressive Reserve Chardonnay represents careful vineyard sourcing and meticulous barrel aging. Lush fruit flavors, complemented by toasty oak and spice notes, are accented by a hint of cream derived from malolactic fermentation. 2007 MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir Grapes from premier Sonoma Coast vineyards combine with six months of aging in French, American and European oak barrels to give this Pinot Noir generous fruit and complexity. The aromas and flavors are a marriage of red berry fruit and subtle earth and leather notes. Graceful and smooth on the palate, it is drinking well now.
Hawkes Wine Jacob Hawkes, Winemaker The Hawkes family has been growing grapes in northern Sonoma County for three decades and owns three separate vineyard properties in Alexander Valley and Chalk Hill. Only in 2002 did the family decide to launch its own label and produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Made exclusively from estate-grown grapes, these wines display classic Alexander Valley fruit character and understated oak nuances. About the Wine: 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon A blend of grapes from two hillside vineyards, this vintage was aged in small oak barrels—40% of which were new French oak—for 22 months. Generous cherry fruit is accented by dust and cedar notes in this soft, elegant and very appealing Cabernet Sauvignon.
HALL Wines Kathryn Hall, Owner At HALL Wines, Craig and Kathryn Hall are building their dream of an unrivaled destination in the Napa Valley where winemaking excellence meets
contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire the senses. Today HALL’s estate vineyards encompass more than 500 acres of classic Bordeaux grape varieties, and soon the state-of-the-art HALL winery near Rutherford will be joined by a second, Frank Gehry–designed winery and visitors’ center just south of St. Helena. Through meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards and in the cellar, HALL Wines deliciously captures the unique and diverse character of Napa Valley’s soils and climate. About the Wines: 2008 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc Primarily from a vineyard near Yountville, this 100% stainless steel–fermented Sauvignon Blanc offers effusive aromas of citrus, pink grapefruit and tropical fruit layered with flavors of guava and gooseberry, with a suggestion of minerality in the crisp finish. 2006 Napa Valley Merlot Produced with grapes from a bevy of low-yielding vineyards, this Merlot showcases this variety’s smooth, harmonious style. Ripe briar fruit aromas and flavors are accented by hints of violet, cedar and cocoa. Elegant and balanced, the wine has a full, lingering finish. 2006 "Jack’s Masterpiece" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon This is the second vintage of "Jack’s Masterpiece," which features label art by Jack Reynolds, the fouryear-old son of HALL Wines President Mike Reynolds. This rare Cabernet, created primarily for the HALL Wines family, showcases youthful blackberry and cassis fruit, complemented by notes of white chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Bold and structured, it should develop beautifully for several years. 2006 "Kathryn Hall" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon "Kathryn Hall," HALL Wines’ signature Cabernet Sauvignon, combines the finest estate vineyard blocks with mountain fruit from its vineyard partners. This mouthfilling Cabernet exhibits concentrated black currant, smoke and spice character. Still showing youthful tannins, it promises to drink beautifully now and evolve well in the cellar.

To allow vineyard character to shine through, PAX utilizes indigenous fermentations, minimal handling, unobtrusive use of the finest French oak barrels and bottling without filtration or fining. About the Wine: 2007 Cuvée Christine North Coast Syrah The majority of grapes for this Syrah came from warm, rocky sites east of the Russian River Valley.
Black raspberry and blackberry dominate this deeply fruity wine, accented by underlying notes of bramble, fennel and black cardamom. Bright and fresh, yet weighty on the palate, it is accessible now but will reward those with the patience to cellar their bottles.
Salvestrin Vineyards & Winery The Salvestrin Family, Owners The Salvestrin family has been growing grapes on its historic St. Helena vineyard since 1932, but only in 1994 did it begin making wine from a portion of its estate vineyard. In 2001, the family completed construction of a new winery on the estate, which enables it to combine state-of-the-art technology with traditional methods to produce small quantities of handcrafted Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Retaggio (red blend), Sauvignon Blanc and Petite Sirah. About the Wines: 2008 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc This 100% Sauvignon Blanc was fermented entirely in stainless steel and aged in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrels. The wine shows bright pear, apricot and citrus character, a hint of mineral complexity and a crisp, balanced finish. 2005 Estate Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Ripe fruit, dark chocolate, and hints of oak and spice in this decadent Cabernet fill the senses. Bold and balanced, it coats the palate, but stays smooth through the long finish. Although drinking well now, it has the structure to age for years to come.
Vineyard 7 & 8 John and Louise Steffens, Owners John and Louise Steffens purchased Vineyard 7 & 8 in 1999. Originally planted in 1985, Vineyard 7 & 8 is located at the top of Napa Valley’s Spring Mountain at an elevation of 2,020 feet. In recent years, the Steffens have built a technologically advanced estate winery and brought together a stellar production team, including winemaker Luc Morlet, assistant winemaker Wesley Steffens and— to manage the vineyards—Pete Richmond of Silverado Farming Company, all to
produce world-class wines that emphasize the life and passion of Vineyard 7 & 8. About the Wines: 2006 "8" Spring Mountain District Chardonnay Bright gold in color, the 2006 "8" Chardonnay exhibits complex aromas and flavors of pineapple, stone fruits, tropical fruit and spice, plus a hint of minerality. This Chardonnay was the first wine made in the estate’s new winery facility. 2005 "7" Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon This great example of a cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon displays an intriguing character of red fruit and spice, followed by subtle nuances of cedar, tobacco and cocoa. Firm yet polished mountain tannins, together with fine balance, allow it to show well in its youth, yet continue to develop for a decade or more.
Woodhouse Family Cellars Bijal Shah, Owner Woodhouse Family Cellars is a maker of high quality, boutique Washington wines produced in the old world style. The goal of Woodhouse Family Cellars is to produce wines that age well; to achieve that goal, it handles the grapes gently, ages the young wines carefully and releases its wines later than most so that each bottling reaches its full potential. Woodhouse Family Cellars currently produces five separate brands. About the Wines: 2005 Hudson Shah Walla Walla Valley Chardonnay This dense, golden Chardonnay opens with aromas of butterscotch, pear, baked apple and sweet oak. The palate is round and rich, with apple, pear and guava flavors, complemented by velvety texture and fresh acidity that linger through the finish. 2005 Dussek Rattlesnake Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Combining an oaky, fruit-forward style with classic mineral and earth character found in the Cabernet-based wines of Europe, the 2005 Dussek Cabernet Sauvignon demonstrates Washington State’s ability to straddle the line between the old world and the new.

LIVE AUCTION LOTS Sun Valley Center for the Arts Wine Auction 2009
Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs, 2004 A big—really BIG—bottle of Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs customarily kicks off the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction. This year the excitement begins with a fabulous Salmanazar from the marvelous 2004 vintage. Chardonnay from multiple vineyard sources in North Coast cool-climate locations, including Carneros, Anderson Valley and the Marin coast, produced a cuvée of vibrant fruit and racy character. Partial barrel fermentation and two years of bottle aging on the yeast after secondary fermentation contributed elegance and complexity. This is a wonderful Blanc de Blancs—lively, rich and polished.

Grab a bonanza of big bottles from the Napa Valley with one generous bid! The 1998 Frank Family Vineyards Winston Hill Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a hillside vineyard at the base of the Vaca Range along the east side of the Napa Valley. This fine Cabernet Sauvignon ranks among the best of the vintage and should continue to evolve in the rare Jeroboam offered here. Vineyard 29, located just north of St. Helena in the Napa Valley, is one of the Napa Valley’s most ambitious and impressive young wineries. Two Magnums comprise its donation: 2005 Vineyard 29 St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard surrounding the winery, which showcases elegant character and balanced complexity; and 2005 Vineyard 29 Aida St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon, from a vineyard between St. Helena and Calistoga, which displays huge fruit and impressive structure.

Chateau Montelena Winery has been making exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons since 1972 and is now considered one of the Napa Valley’s benchmark producers. The 2005 Chateau Montelena Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits forward cherry fruit accented by chocolate and coffee complexity. It should develop for several years in this Double Magnum. Fantesca Estate & Winery in the Spring Mountain District of the Napa Valley is a relatively new producer but has already proved the Cabernet Sauvignon from its 10-acre estate vineyard to be the equal of many of the "cult" Cabernets. A Magnum each of the 2004 and 2005 Fantesca Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon, each showing fine fruit, elegance and complexity, should provide for fascinating drinking. Parry Cellars, situated along the Silverado Trail north of St. Helena, is the Napa Valley’s smallest single-vineyard winery. The 2005 Parry Cellars St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon combines lush black fruit with nutmeg and cocoa complexity. Only 260 cases were produced, and the high bidder will receive an etched and signed Double Magnum (one of just five produced), a signed Magnum and a bottle. Stephen and Sue Parry invite the high bidder and three guests to their home and small vineyard for a delicious lunch, accompanied by Parry Cellars vintages, when the four are next in the Napa Valley. Lunch is to be scheduled for a date of mutual convenience.

Vineyard 7 & 8 will host a bocce luncheon at its beautiful estate high on the slopes of Spring Mountain, to be punctuated by a tour and tasting in its new state-of-the-art winery and a barrel sampling of upcoming vintages. The six will join Anomaly Vineyards owners Steve and Linda Goldfarb for a private tour of their handsome stone winery and beautifully tended vineyard estate at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains near St. Helena, to be followed by a sumptuous dinner in the Anomaly barrel cave prepared by a guest chef and accompanied by wines from Anomaly’s private cellar. The six also will spend an afternoon in the kitchen at Peju Province Winery. After donning aprons, they will delve into Napa Valley’s rich bounty of organic ingredients and with the help of chef Brian Streeter and a few glasses of Peju wine, they will create their own lunch. In the process, they’ll get tips on cooking and how to pair wine and food. Lunch will be accompanied by selected Peju wines, chosen to complement the dishes. Afterward, owner Herta Peju will treat them to a private tour of the Peju gardens and send them home with some of the winery’s most requested recipes. Events are to be scheduled for dates of mutual convenience. Transportation and accommodations are not included.

Big Bottles for Current Drinking These three big bottles can—and probably should—be appreciated now, without additional cellaring. The 2002 Conte di Bregonzo Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is light and pleasant, even in this impressive Double Magnum. The 2000 Saviez Napa Valley Zinfandel—presented here in a rare Magnum—shows polished Claret-style fruit and grace. Last but not least, the 1993 Per Sempre Select Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon displays complex currant, leather and cedar character. It is offered here in Magnum.

Two of a Kind The Middleton family has been involved in forestry since the late 1800s and in agriculture for more than 20 years, but Rick Middleton founded Clayhouse Wines on land just east of Paso Robles only a few years ago. Since the first vintage in 2004, Clayhouse has produced a series of very impressive vintages. In 2006 the Middleton family established Cadaretta Winery near Walla Walla, Washington, with the goal of producing equally impressive wines with grapes from the Columbia Valley. The 2004 Clayhouse Hillside CuvÊe Paso Robles Red Wine is a blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. This generous red showcases ripe black fruit, chocolate and earth and is offered here in a rare Double Magnum. The 2006 Cadaretta Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, from the winery’s debut vintage, shows elegant, balanced plum and cassis character. A rare wine, it is offered here in an etched Double Magnum.
