Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs, 2005 A big—REALLY BIG—bottle of Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs traditionally kicks off the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction. This year the fun begins with a monumental Salmanazar from the exceptional 2005 vintage.

Chardonnay from vineyards in several very cool North Coast locations, including Carneros, Anderson Valley and the Marin coast, produced a cuvée of delicate fruit and profound structure. Partial barrel fermentation and two years of bottle aging on the yeast after secondary fermentation contributed polish and complexity. This is a classic Blanc de Blancs— crisp, toasty and elegant.

As is customary with this first lot, the bottle is chilled and ready to be opened by saber and enjoyed with friends. To make the sacrifice bearable, this lot also includes three Magnums—one each of 2001 Schramsberg J. Schram, 1999 Schramsberg Reserve and 2006 J. Davies Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon—for the winning bidder to take home. The high bidder should know that providing a glass of bubbly to your hardworking and faithful auctioneer is widely considered a portent of good luck.

One of those glories is wine, and tonight the high bidder will go home with a Magnum vertical collection: 2004, 2005 and 2006 Cliff Lede Poetry Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon. Produced from the finest lots of grapes and only available directly from the winery, these are superb Cabernet Sauvignons by any measure. In addition, the high bidder will receive a preferred spot on the Poetry mailing list, so he or she can add to this vertical collection.

Next stop, Yountville. Or, more specifically, Bardessono, which combines contemporary luxury and simplified elegance with the philosophy of sustainability in every aspect of its operation. A spa suite will be the high bidder’s home base for two nights, providing the perfect place from which to explore the town and wine country. One of those evenings, the couple will be treated to a sumptuous dinner at REDD, where chef Richard Reddington creates inspired California cuisine. To see Yountville from a different perspective, the couple also will stay one night at the Poetry Inn, Cliff Lede Vineyards’ intimate bed & breakfast in the Stags Leap District. During their stay, they will be treated to a tour and tasting at nearby Cliff Lede Vineyards.

Steve and Marilyn Rivera of Rivera Vineyards will provide helicopter transport from and to Kuleto Estate’s private helipad for a private tour, tasting and lunch at their beautiful small estate on Atlas Peak, where winemaker Karen Culler makes amazing wines. Magnum P.R. Party—At Your House!

First held 10 years ago, the Magnum Pig Roast (P.R.) Party has quietly— okay, NOT so quietly—become one of the most anticipated events of the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction weekend. What began as a casual party where attendees would share Magnums of their favorite wines and feast on spit-roasted pig with all the fixings became such a big deal, it finally had to be limited to invitation-only. With interest so strong, we have decided to create a live lot that will enable the winning bidder to host his or her own Magnum Pig Roast Party for 60! On a date of mutual convenience, our master pig roasters, David and Trish Wilson, will set up shop at your place—in the Sun Valley area, please—and roast a pig to perfection. The side dishes will be delivered, wines will be uncorked and the party will be ON! All the high bidder need do is arrange the date (perhaps an anniversary or birthday?) and invite the guests. And to make it exactly like the original, Sun Valley Center Wine Auction donors have provided 16 incredible Magnums to be enjoyed by the lucky guests.

Home on the Range Chappellet Vineyard Two dozen would-be ranchers will spend the day—and eight will spend the night—experiencing the life of an Idaho sheepherder with Brian and Kathleen Bean of Lava Lake Lamb and Cyril and Blakesley Chappellet of Chappellet Vineyard.

Lava Lake Ranch lies about an hour southeast of Sun Valley, where the Pioneer Mountains collide with the Snake River Plain. Known for raising the best tasting lamb in Idaho, Lava Lake Ranch is one of the West’s most important wildlife and land conservation sites, with private holdings and public grazing leases covering nearly one million acres.

During this day you will meet shepherds, scientists, horses, Border Collies and Great Pyrenees as you learn about the life of a sheepherder.

Explore sagebrush and grassland plains, foothill and mountain ecosystems, and be on the lookout for more than 100 bird species as well as black bear, elk and wolf. Work up an appetite, because that evening’s barbecue will feature lamb ribs and leg of lamb paired with Chappellet’s award-winning wines. On February 18, the Orion will arrive in Wellington on New Zealand’s North Island, just in time for a morning round of golf at the exciting and challenging Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, a traditional course characterized by massive dunes, long rough and gently undulating greens. That afternoon the couples will sightsee Wellington, New Zealand’s sophisticated capital city: viewing the city from the summit of Mount Victoria, touring the Te Papa National Museum, and browsing the shops and cafés along the waterfront. On February 22, the Orion heads back to sea to cruise past dramatic coastlines and pristine islands. On this leg of the journey, on-board lecturers will detail the region’s exploration and settlement by European sailors.

Arriving at the Bay of Islands the next morning, the group will challenge Kauri Cliffs, a course that became one of the world’s top 50 just one year after completion. Idaho Mountain Playhouse The “Idaho Mountain Playhouse” is a collaborative project launched in 1995 by brothers and longtime valley residents Craig and Jason Roth.

The project was originally conceived to benefit their college alma mater’s annual scholarship fundraiser.

This year Jason Roth, Roth Marketing Group, LLC, opted to keep the project local, with the proceeds to benefit children’s programs at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

The Idaho Mountain Playhouse is rustic, rugged and strong. The structure is 6 X 8 feet, but feels much larger due to the exaggerated roof overhangs and exposed beam ends. A Napa Valley Tour in Four Wineries Barnett Vineyards Morlet Family Vineyards The Napa Valley Reserve ZD Wines While there is plenty to see in the Napa Valley, this two-night Napa Valley stay package for six (three couples) will show the high bidder and his or her guests the diversity of the region in just four wineries.

Accommodations for the two-night stay will be at magnificent Meadowood Napa Valley. A resort in the grand tradition, Meadowood offers luxurious accommodations and top-of-the-line amenities in a private, beautiful setting.

During their stay, the three couples will be treated to a tour of The Napa Valley Reserve, the unique private club and winery on the grounds of Meadowood, and a tasting of two vintages.

Also on the schedule are visits to wineries up and down Napa Valley. Barnett Vineyards will host the group for a picnic lunch on the wooded slopes of Spring Mountain, with great valley views and a selection of its handcrafted wines. Terra Valentine Winery invites two couples to spend two nights at luxurious Villa Valentine, its private guesthouse at the very top of Spring Mountain.

On arrival, the group will be treated to a tour of the winery grounds and a tasting of Terra Valentine estate Cabernet Sauvignons paired with artisan cheeses. The entire 75-acre Terra Valentine estate—from the orchard to the redwood forest—will be theirs to explore during the stay. From Terra Valentine Winery, it’s only a brief drive to historic Spring Mountain Vineyard, where the quartet is invited to stroll the vineyards and lush gardens and taste the fantastic wines now being produced at this 1885 estate.
