Directors’ Letter Dear Members and Friends, We are delighted and honored to be serving you and the community as Co-Executive Directors of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. Both of us have been living, working and raising children in the valley for years, and many of you already know us as colleagues, neighbors or friends. Our love for this valley and the important role the arts play in attracting and keeping us here inspired us to step forward into this leadership role. We desire, as you do, to make the Wood River Valley a stimulating place to live and visit—a place where our parents, our kids and our friends have the cultural, intellectual and entertainment opportunities that fuel their curiosity as well as their sense of creativity and play. Together with The Center’s Board of Directors and Advisory Board, we look forward to advancing The Center’s plan for a new building. With your input and help, we are confident that this vital resource for our community’s future will be realized. In the meantime, we are working with The Center’s smart and dedicated staff to continue presenting outstanding arts programs. As you will see in this calendar, there are wonderful opportunities to hear great music, dip into some stimulating discussions, try your hand at a class or two and even pedal a bike-inspired piece of art. We hope you and your family and friends are able to enjoy much of it. It is going to be a terrific summer!

Sally Boettger

Please feel free to stop in and see us and share with us your feedback on how The Center can play a more significant role in the life of your family and this community. We look forward to seeing you and talking with you over the busy summer months!

We’ll talk about clichés, both at the sentence and structural levels, we’ll read some famous stories and some of your stories, too, and we’ll try to explore ways that good writing can help us avoid sleepwalking through life. Participants should be prepared to share up to 15 pages of fiction with Anthony and the other writers in the workshop. Besides reading each other’s work, we’ll read a few published stories (handouts provided) and have lots of fun.

Geared: The Culture of Bicycles Geared: The Culture of Bicycles

Saturday, May 28–Thursday, July 28 For people of all ages and in all parts of the world, bicycles mean freedom. Kids experience their first moments of independence on bikes—those wheels allow them to explore the edges of their neighborhoods and beyond. People around the world use bicycles to get to school and work quickly and cheaply. In the early 20th century, bicycles came to epitomize the New Woman. Bicycles offer a different kind of freedom to recreational riders; this is particularly true in the Wood River Valley. From early spring through late fall, cyclists are a constant presence on the bike path, Highway 75, and backcountry trails. Cars and buses bear racks loaded with mountain bikes and road bikes. We ride primarily for exercise and for pleasure, finding camaraderie on long rides on winding single track or hilly roads. For many residents of the valley, bikes are also an important means of transportation. In other parts of the world, riders use bikes strictly for transport—not recreation. Beyond getting workers to jobs and students to school, bicycles can be transformed into portable shops or services. Through this multidisciplinary project, The Center celebrates the bicycle in all its forms and uses—as a means of transportation, a vehicle for recreation, and also a site for innovation in design and engineering—a place where craft and industry intersect.

Minimalism: Then & Now

This project has been generously supported by The Robert Lehman Foundation and The Wolfson Family Foundations.

The Literal Line: Minimalism Then and Now Friday, August 5–Friday, September 30

This exceptional group of paintings, works on paper and sculptural objects by artists working at the forefront of the Minimalist movement in the 1960s and 1970s, displayed alongside artwork by four contemporary artists, provides a foundation for a look at the movement that continues to influence artists into the 21st century. The exhibition explores the tendency to create work that is literally about surface and line, about materials and their properties rather than about expression or illusionism. These artists continued Modernism’s inclination to reduce the artwork down to its most basic elements. That tendency continues today in different formats and with new and varied intentions.

Paulette Phlipot, Food Photography Award-winning photographer Paulette Phlipot learned to appreciate great food at a young age. Both her parents spent time in the kitchen chopping, stirring and teaching their children how to cook and to be adventurous when it came to eating. So it was only natural for her to combine her passions for food and photography after graduating with honors from the Western Academy of Photography in Victoria, B.C. Canada. Known for her ability to make food look as good as it tastes, Paulette produces images for editorial and commercial clients throughout the world.

Experience the style and glamour of the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction. Stunning photography of recipes and dishes from acclaimed chefs are paired with elegant party pictures offering an intimate behindthe-scenes portrait of the delicious food, superior wine and creative style that have characterized the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction for thirty years. Every July, this three-day event takes place at gorgeous locations throughout Sun Valley, Idaho, raising significant support for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts—a charitable organization that provides exceptional year round arts and educational experiences for people of all ages. The Center’s founder Glenn Janss was inspired with the idea for the Wine Auction after her girlhood friends Molly Chappellet and Mary Novak invited her to the first Auction Napa Valley in California. She recognized that they made “a little money that night” and wondered if she could do the same for her young arts organization. The following year, Glenn asked Molly, Mary and others to donate wine to her auction for The Center. The generosity of those early participants—wineries, patrons, caterers, auctioneers and volunteers alike—was essential to the success of the Wine Auction. Today the Sun Valley Center Wine Auction attracts wineries, patrons, sponsors and chefs from around the country to its unique blend of casually elegant, highly refined and superbly entertaining dinners, tastings and parties. These events coupled with incredible auction lots have translated into more than $18 million raised to bring educational opportunities and diverse cultural experiences to this remote mountain community. Wine Auction patrons allow The Center to offer free arts programs and scholarships to thousands of children while achieving national recognition for its outstanding programs in the visual arts, the performing arts and the humanities. In gratitude and in awe of this success, the Sun Valley Center’s Junior Patrons Circle has compiled this book to honor the Wine Auction’s 30th Anniversary. Enjoy these delicious menus and wine suggestions with our hope that your life is filled with the art of wine, the art of entertaining and the art of living well. If you need additional inspiration, come join us at the next Sun Valley Center Wine Auction!
