His work revives and modernizes the tradition of telling menacing, exciting and ultimately portentous stories to little kids. For as long as we’ve been telling stories to children we have told of witches in candy houses, princes who have been turned into frogs and children held captive by trolls. Handler reminds us why this tradition is so important. And so much fun.

Vice Admiral Robert S. Harward, Jr. is a Navy SEAL and serves as Deputy Commander of the US Central Command. In addition to serving several tours in the Naval Special Warfare community he served as the National Security Council as the director of Strategy and Policy for the office of Combating Terrorism, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff representative to National Counterterrorism Center, as a member of the Senior Interagency Strategy Team and, most recently he served as commander of Combined Joint Interagency Task Force from 2009-2011 in Afghanistan. Harward commanded troops in Afghanistan and Iraq over six years since September 11, 2001. His incredible experience and leadership in the military give him a unique perspective in understanding the conflicts our nation currently faces and the realities of modern warfare.

Rodriguez writes regularly for several newspapers and magazines and has written an autobiographical trilogy on class, ethnicity and race: Hunger of Memory, Days of Obligation: An Argument With My Mexican Father, and Brown: The Last Discovery of America. Rodriguez received a 1997 George Foster Peabody Award for his NewsHour essays on American life. He has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in non-fiction; and the National Book Critics’ Award. As a part of our multidisciplinary project, he will discuss themes explored in his book Brown: The Last Discovery of America.

Frank Rich joined New York magazine in June 2011 as Writer-at-Large, writing monthly on politics and culture. He is also a commentator on nymag.com, engaging in regular dialogues on the news of the week. Rich joined the magazine following a distinguished career at the New York Times, where his Sunday Op-Ed column helped inaugurate the expanded opinion pages that the paper introduced in the Sunday Week in Review section in April 2005. Among other honors, Mr. Rich received the George Polk Award for commentary in 2005. In 2011 he received the Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from Harvard University. He has written about politics and culture for many publications.

In speaking about his craft and why he tells war stories, O’Brien says, “That’s what fiction is for. It’s for getting at the truth when the truth isn’t sufficient for the truth.” For more than thirty years he has, with novels like Going After Cacciato, The Things They Carried and In the Lake of the Woods, illustrated the experience of a soldier at war as well as a soldiers returning home. O’Brien has been awarded The National Book Award as well as the Dayton Literary Peace Prize lifetime achievement award.

Juno nominees and winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award
for Vocal Group of the Year, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala write and sing in harmony best described as angelic. These two best friends met in their high school music class in 2002; they have since released five albums and toured extensively across North America. The sheer joy with which they perform is infectious, turning first-time listeners into instant fans. Dala are equally entertaining between songs, telling stories that make every show unique. They have performed at The New Orleans Jazz Festival, The Edmonton Folk Festival, California’s Strawberry Festival and Mariposa. In 2009, they were the only Canadian act invited to play at the 50th Anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival.

Recently anointed as Boston’s Americana Artist of the Year, David Wax Museum has been on a steady ascent. From acclaimed performances at the Newport Folk Festival, sharing bills with Carolina Chocolate Drops and Ben Kweller, the Museum fuses traditional Mexican folk with country, folk and rock and in the process have created an utterly unique Mexo-Americana aesthetic. Combining Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering, accordion and donkey jawbone rattling, they’ve electrified audiences across the country. In addition to the evening performance, David Wax Museum will be performing four concerts in local schools while here in the Wood River Valley.

6:30pm, Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater, Hailey $20 / $5 students 18 and under SYBARITE5 has taken audiences around the US by storm. From Radiohead to Mozart, this group of talented, diverse musicians has changed the perception of chamber music performance. From the moment that their bows hit the strings, the audience is taken on an exciting ride that engages the senses and redefines the rules. SYBARITE5 has recently appeared at the Library of Congress, on the CBS Early show, for his Holiness the Dalai Lama, and at the Aspen Music Festival. In New York City they have performed at Lincoln Center, Time Warner Center, the Apple Store, and will debut at Carnegie Hall on November 13, 2012. SYBARITE5’s appearance is a collaborative project between The Center and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. SYBARITE5 will perform in all local elementary schools and will do intensive work with students of the Wood River High School Orchestra and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony School of Music. The concert is a joint presentation to benefit the educational programs of The Center and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. A cabaret evening with the MICHAEL KAESHAMMER TRIO
6:30pm, Sun Valley Opera House $20 / $30 nonmembers / $10 students 18 and under Matt Andersen’s musical household in rural, blue-collar in New Brunswick got him interested in playing early on and by junior high he was in the school band, first on tuba and later on trumpet. He took up guitar at 14, and before long was playing classic rock and Top 40 covers in pub bands while he studied studio engineering. Things changed dramatically, however, when he discovered the blues. “Through Eric Clapton I got into B.B. King, which led me to the Chicago electric stuff and eventually back to the Mississippi Delta guys,” says the 30-year-old singer. “What really hit me most about the blues was its total honesty.” Matt began to build his name on the Canadian circuit, his imposing voice and slashing slide guitar making a monolithic impression on audiences. In 2010 he became the first Canadian to win Memphis’s famed International Blues Challenge, which led to festival dates in France, Italy, and the US, where he toured with Old Crow Medicine Show.
6:30pm, NexStage Theatre, Ketchum $50 / $60 nonmembers After studying classical piano for seven years in his German homeland, a 13-year-old Michael Kaeshammer (pronounced “case-hammer”) discovered boogie-woogie and stride piano as played by Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson, Pinetop Smith, and Fats Waller. In three years, he was playing boogie-woogie piano in clubs, concerts, and festivals all over Germany. He attracted attention almost immediately after the family moved to the west coast of Canada, performing at blues and jazz festivals across the country during the summer of 1996. Besides playing the piano he also sings blues and jazz. Kaeshammer is best known in Canada, but has performed and toured extensively in the United States and Europe. Hosted by The Center’s Junior Patrons Circle
